Next in Fashion (2020) s01e08 Episode Script
Military
- [military march playing]
- Welcome back to Next in Fashion.
We have six designers remaining,
and the next challenge is
about a very powerful fashion influence,
which has inspired many,
many cool designs.
It is, of course, military.
- Does it have to be cool?
- [laughs] I mean, I guess not.
Lex, wait!
[pop music playing]
- Wow!
- Hey, I'm this one?
[Marco] Here we go. It's getting smaller.
[Ashton] Words I never never like to hear
coming out of anybody.
- [laughing]
- My hands are shaking.
Is there anything else new, Charles?
Higher levels of anxiety.
[laughs]
- [Tan France] Morning, everyone.
- [Alexa Chung] Hello!
- Hi!
- 'Tis us!
- Hey!
- [Tan] Come join us.
- [laughing]
- Ooh!
[Tan] Hi, everyone. Welcome back.
- Alexa
- Yeah.
- That's it, final six!
- I know!
At the beginning, I seen, like,
18 people, and then now,
shrink to six people.
It's definitely going to be,
like, more competitive,
because everyone's going to show
their best.
[Alexa] I mean,
this competition's really getting
- down to the wire now.
- [Tan] Yeah.
And there's so much talent in this room.
But only two challenges are gonna stand
between you guys
and the grand finale of Next in Fashion.
This next challenge is
all about a major fashion influence.
It's a [clears throat]
salute to great style.
[Alexa] Yeah, yeah, that's right.
I'm sorry about Tan's puns,
and I'm sorry for this, Minju.
[Minju groans]
[Alexa] You're already sensing
what's about to happen.
Today is all about military.
[groans]
It's a good one, Minju!
Minju, what's going on?
It's a really good one!
Ugh! Military, no, no, no!
I don't wanna do military.
I don't know how can I translate
the military in my way.
It sounds so aggressive, and I don't like
the color palette of the military.
You know?
Military's about, like, a camouflage.
You have to hide in nature,
and then, boom.
But I'm the popping-up person.
I'm right standing here,
wearing the yellow.
I'm wearing the blue, like that.
- The Minju army of peace and love.
- Yeah.
[laughing]
Do any of you like to use
military-inspired pieces in your life,
at all?
Oh, good. Ashton.
I did an all-pink
military-inspired collection,
then three weeks later
Beyoncé wore it for the Tidal launch.
- Wow!
- Amazing.
Military uniforms have had an undeniable
impact on fashion from day one.
I'm talking bomber jackets, cargo pants,
jumpsuits, this kind of girdle area,
camouflage.
So we want you to pull inspiration
from military uniforms,
in a way that honors its intended purpose,
but then, still makes it fashion.
Tomorrow is your next runway show.
- Alexa and I will be judging
- With our judgy eyes.
[laughing]
And we are welcoming back
the incredible stylist
that is Queen Elizabeth.
You can call her Elizabeth Stewart.
And of course, we'll have a special
guest judge with us.
Yeah, and actually, this time,
there's two of them.
They're a design duo
that put themselves on the map
with their sharp, sophisticated
and perfectly tailored sportswear.
We'll be welcoming, from Public School,
Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow.
[gasps] Public School!
[Tan] They are incredible. I've been
a huge fan of theirs for literally years.
[Charles] Public School is perfect
for this challenge.
I love their style
because they're rule-breakers.
You will each present just one complete
military-inspired look.
Now, please direct your attention
to the masterpiece that is
the Next in Fashion closet.
[Minju] Hmm.
- [Angel] Ooh!
- [Ashton] Wow!
[Tan] We have assembled an army
of embellishments,
fabrics and everything you could
possibly need.
One of you will be the winner
of this challenge,
and unfortunately,
at this crucial point in the competition,
we're gonna have to say goodbye
to two of you
after tomorrow's runway show.
Troops! Attention!
Your time starts
[laughing]
now!
[Charles] Oh, this is nice.
- [Tan] Okay, military.
- [Alexa] Yes.
A lot of people don't realize
that almost everyone across the globe
has something military-inspired.
A bell-bottom, combat boots,
- a bomber jacket.
- Yeah.
A trench coat. It was invented
for the British military.
My inspiration is the military patches
that are chevrons.
Military clothing is,
for all intents and purposes,
- fairly utilitarian.
- [Tan] Yeah.
So how do they embellish it
or do something with it,
to make it high fashion?
[Charles] My immediate thing I want
to go for is, like, naval-themed,
because it's clean, it's polished,
it's very recognizable.
So, I'm going to be making
a naval-inspired jumpsuit
in white pleather, with gold buttons,
and I'm also making a wrap
trench jacket shawl
with leather detailing
and some blue suede.
My aesthetic is definitely very modern,
very architectural.
It's almost mathematical in construction
because I based some things on logic.
It's gonna be really cute.
- [laughing]
- I don't know what I'm gonna do.
[shouts]
I don't know.
I don't know what I should choose.
Do you like this? No? All right.
Military is so hard.
[drum and bass music playing]
I'm gonna do a denim trench coat,
which is quite oversized
with binding exposed on the outside.
I was thinking maybe that it could
pay homage
to the medics who work in the military.
I found this really beautiful
blue shirting
that made me kind of think of,
like, hospital scrubs.
[Marco] My experience
with a military theme
is the occasional strong shoulder jacket
[laughing] for someone to wear
with no pants on stage.
So I wanna do something sexy.
I'm thinking about a cropped jacket
with a cape,
and then really short, like, booty short.
Sort of like a USO pinup version
of a military outfit.
In the past, the judges have said
that my work is too costume-y or extra,
but I'm gonna stick to my guns
on what I'd like to do.
- [Daniel] You okay, Minju?
- I love this.
I was asking for this
and then already took by you.
Oh. You know, you can take it.
- Really?
- Yeah, yeah.
- Really?
- Yeah.
- Really?
- Yeah, just take it.
[shouts, laughs]
Finally, I have really nice fabric,
thanks to Daniel.
- Thank you, Daniel. Thank you.
- Okay, it's okay.
I feel a bit sad and stressed
and nervous about two people going home.
I think now the group is getting
really, really small right now,
and all the designers right here
is very talented and competitive.
[Alexa] Ashton!
- Hello, Ashton.
- Howdy.
What are we making?
[Ashton] We're making a deconstructed
harnessed bomber,
and the bottom, I'm gonna do
a knee-length short.
A little bit more like
tactical tough detailing,
and this will be a big,
kind of bomber sleeve.
So I'm gonna give volume here,
pulled in here,
and then sort of, like,
sassy on the bottom.
- Nice.
- [Tan] I love it.
Of everybody in this room,
you're the one who has actually
done military before.
Like, Beyoncé wore it.
How are you feeling about this challenge?
I'm feeling a little nervous because
military doesn't translate
into my personal life.
- Yeah.
- I'm much more
- into nature, and
- Okay.
I have a cabin
in which I escape to any time I can.
Oh! My cabin.
That is my sanctuary.
That is the one place I go to
when I really need to decompress.
I love to be surrounded by nature.
Most people think that I'm gonna be
this gnarly pit bull,
and I'm gonna be aggressive.
But I'm wildly passionate about flowers.
And they're like,
"What is wrong with you?"
I've got nothing else
to say other than "win."
- Thank you.
- Go win.
- Okay. Bye-bye!
- Appreciate it, guys.
- Hi, Angel!
- Hi, you guys!
- Hi, Angel. How are you?
- I'm great.
This looks like a nice fabric.
Can you show me what you're making?
[Angel] So I'm not sure you guys
have heard about a movie
called Moonrise Kingdom,
from Wes Anderson
- Oh, yeah, Wes Anderson.
- Yes, yes.
When boy scouts of that movie
ran away with a girl,
they're living
in a lovely little triangle tent
- when they escaped from their home.
- [Tan] Yeah, yeah.
So I'm going to make a tent-shaped
big bomber jacket.
[Alexa] Like a military quilted coat?
[Angel] Yeah, this is
kind of a military quilted coat.
But the shape is going to be
more similar to a tent.
- Okay.
- It's going to be really difficult.
So I'm actually making my own fabric.
Oh! All right.
- Yeah.
- Very ambitious. What's underneath it?
[laughs] I haven't think about yet.
You worried about time?
[Angel] I think that's my biggest problem.
I know I'm always slow.
I will figure it out.
So you already have
a very established business.
What would it mean to have
your collections on Net-a-Porter?
Oh, my God.
That would be really, really, really good.
It's kind of like one of my dream,
'cause right now, mostly, my stock
has offline business.
- Bricks and mortar.
- [Angel] Yeah.
So Net-a-Porter would be
- the best platform for it.
- Right.
At the age of 27,
I've been in Business of Fashion 500,
and Forbes 30 Under 30
and also International Woolmark Prize.
So, I would describe myself as a young
Chinese generation leader.
I think it's my responsibility
to present Chinese culture to the world.
- Best of luck, Angel.
- Thank you. Thank you, guys.
[Daniel] I've already got the trousers
hung together,
but I've still got quite a bit to do,
and I haven't even started
on the trench coat.
Realistically, this coat is complicated.
I'm binding every seam,
which is using this
basically like a tape, and I, like,
put it on every single seam.
The only thing is that you have
to bind them before you sew it together.
- Oh, shut the [bleeps] up.
- Yeah, yeah.
- Oh, God.
- [laughing]
[Daniel] I don't know what I was thinking.
I am feeling a bit overwhelmed.
[Ashton gasps]
[Minju] You know, military is not for me.
So I'm a little bit worried,
but I cannot do something
without my heart.
So now I have the right fabric.
I'm going to make military look
inspired by Les Misérables.
When I watched that movie,
it's all about French Revolution,
you know?
But still, there's love, there's hope.
I'm gonna make the trench
with the military detail with it,
like the volume sleeve.
It's very historical shape,
because it's really strong, you know.
The power shoulder, you know.
[Marco]
I have the shell of my jacket done,
but I still have to
finish cutting the cape.
I feel pretty good about the cape.
I think it's gonna make it sexy.
I want to create something with puffs.
The construction of the coat is difficult.
This coat has three layers.
The surface layer is the metallic
silk fabric,
and then the inside layer, there is
a cream-colored polyester fabric.
I'm spending a lot of time on this coat.
I think I'm giving myself
too much challenge every time.
I'm a little nervous today, to be honest.
I'm nervous every day, that's wrong.
I'm feeling confident in my work.
I'm working so fast.
I have a lot of details,
I have a lot of construction.
So yes, my work is frantic,
but it will get finished.
- [Alexa] Hello!
- [Tan] Daniel-san!
Hi!
[Tan] What are you making, Daniel-san?
- I'm doing a denim trench coat.
- You're making a women's look?
Yeah, I am.
- [Tan] I'm surprised by that.
- [Alexa] Good.
I think because my brand is only menswear,
I have to push myself in this challenge.
- Think it's time to take a risk.
- Yeah.
What do you do out of work to have fun?
Like, going out in London is a bit crap,
actually.
Me and my friends, "Oh, well,
we should do something really fun."
So we started this night called Piggery,
and we dress as pigs.
[Alexa] A what? A pig party? I love that!
- Yeah.
- I don't understand.
It's not a big thing.
I do it with my sister
[laughs]
Yeah!
[Daniel] We invite all of our friends,
and we take over this bar,
and we just have a really great night
dressed as pigs.
I don't know how we ended up with pigs,
because, actually, half the people
I do it with are all vegan.
And we love pigs. It's really fun.
I don't know where to go from here.
- Oh, right.
- So can we pig off?
- Yeah.
- Come on!
- Oh, God. I can feel how red I am now.
- [Tan] Come on.
[Alexa] Pig sty! It's weird that they say
English people are eccentric.
We have two hours left.
I still have to do the jacket
and finish this jumpsuit.
This jumpsuit's almost done,
but the jacket's gonna take some time.
How's that binding going?
- Nearly done. On my last sleeve.
- [Ashton] Really?
- Yeah.
- [Ashton] Epic.
[Minju] This is really hard coat to make,
because I have to make the sleeve
with, like, pleats.
I wish I had more time always.
But I want to do it.
- [Tan] Marco, Marco. Hello.
- [Alexa] Marco!
- Oh, I love that color, Marco.
- Thank you.
I am taking inspiration from, like, 1940s.
Kind of like USO pinup girls.
- Oh, nice.
- [Alexa] Oh, cool.
- Oh, yeah.
- So, I'm kind of doing like this,
and then there's a little cape-let
in the back.
It looks almost superhero-esque.
It's a little superhero-esque.
I mean, that's
- That's a lot of what I do.
- [laughing]
Tan makes a comment
that it looks like a superhero.
And I know that it's because I've put
a cape on the back of my jacket.
Honestly, I'm not sure what to do.
- All right, good luck. Thanks, Marco.
- [Alexa] Bye!
Damn it.
How are you getting on now?
- [Ashton] What's that?
- How are you getting on?
[groans, laughs]
Attention!
You have one hour left, everyone.
Just 60 minutes remaining.
Oh, bollocks!
[Charles] I'm really happy.
The white jumpsuit looks like it can exist
in someone's closet.
[Marco] Ashton, what have I done?
I spent too much time making that cape.
I cut the cape off the back of the jacket.
I should probably just toss it,
but I put a lot of work into it.
I don't wanna lose that time.
So, now I'm going to make it
into a peplum.
Basically an overskirt.
Like, what was I actually thinking?
- Charles.
- Hi, Alexa.
Yeah, you look like you're in good shape.
[Charles] I am.
It's all about time management for me.
Literally work at my absolute
maximum capacity.
But I'm also a fast sew-er.
Shawl's just right over here.
- Right.
- It's constructed.
I just need to put the belt in.
- Wow.
- Yeah.
- That's amazing.
- Thank you.
I'm so excited to see
what happens tomorrow.
- I'll see you tomorrow.
- See you later, Charles.
See you around.
[Daniel] Oh, God. I'm kind of stressed.
[Charles] There is
a competitive atmosphere going on.
If no one wants to admit, they're lying.
I have a lot to prove
in this whole competition.
Everyone here has their own brand,
except for me.
I could possibly win this,
and I want to win this.
We have six designers left
in this competition.
- Yeah.
- We've got some very ambitious ideas.
[Tan] And many of them are very,
very far behind.
Shall we start with Minju?
Yeah. So, Minju is creating
a Les Misérables- inspired outfit.
Whoo! I have to finish it.
I'm worried because I'm really not sure
what I'm gonna make underneath.
So I have lots of things for tomorrow.
By the end of today, I hope
to have the jacket sewn together,
because that's the most important part.
This coat is definitely a difficult one.
I kind of spent the whole day
on the construction.
So tomorrow I'm going to make a skirt.
So that's a lot.
That's really, really a lot.
End of day one. I don't have bottoms.
[laughs]
That's exciting.
Nothing like having to make pants
on day two.
- [bleeps]
- [laughs]
[Marco] As of right now,
I've got a jacket.
I haven't even started on the shorts
or the bra.
There's so much to do.
Daniel, struggling with time a bit.
What are you thinking?
[Tan] The scrubs. I love the color.
- I think the color's beautiful.
- Yeah.
[Daniel] The trench coat is nearly there,
and I think it looks good.
But in the back of my mind, I'm not sure
that the trench coat and the blue
hospital scrubs work together.
I'm not really gonna know
if it works or not,
until I see it on a model tomorrow.
- On the opposite end of the scale
- Yeah.
someone I'm absolutely
not concerned about
with their time management is Charles,
who is basically finished.
He's gonna kick back and get a pedicure,
at this rate.
[Tan] Yeah. He produces
some beautifully crafted work,
but do I feel super passionate about it?
I don't think so.
There's only one minute left
till the end of the day.
- Put your boots on.
- Oh, my God.
[shouts]
[groans]
I don't know what I was thinking.
All right, designers.
Tools down, everyone.
Tomorrow, you have a couple more hours
in the morning
to finish off your looks.
Right now, it's time for bed.
- Come on, Tan. You gonna tuck me in?
- Of course I am, love.
- Okay. See you tomorrow, good night!
- Good night, everyone!
You got lots of sewing to do?
Okay, let's talk military style.
The humble ho-ho!
jumpsuit.
It is basically one item of clothing.
I mean, how easy can it get?
But one of my tricks
is I like a bit of layering.
It adds personality to the garment,
gives it a little dimension.
Also,
maybe the length isn't right for you,
so you can add a little cuff to it,
like this.
Little tip for you.
You can use this cuff to hide things in.
Dice, cash, gummy bears.
I don't know what you're into.
So there you have it. Go for it.
You can wear a utilitarian jumpsuit
and not look like a pilot.
And if anyone asks,
just tell them that you are a pilot.
That's it. Au revoir.
[dance music playing]
[drum and bass music playing]

- [Charles] You're a single today.
- I am single today.
Alexa's taking so long getting ready
that I'm not willing to wait,
'cause you guys have gotta get to it.
There are just six of you left,
and the stakes have never been higher.
In just three short hours,
your fashion battle begins.
- And some of you have a lot to do.

Your models will be arriving shortly.
Good luck.

- Thank you.
[man] Designers, three hours

Yes!
Runway show is in a few hours.
It's way more than we've ever had
to make on day two
This is the most panicked I've ever been.
And everyone's freaking out.
Before runway, I have to make the belt.
And after, finish this for our top.
I have to make a top
to go underneath this.
And also, I have to make something inside.
I'm thinking about a leather dress.
And I'm going to make a skirt.
I'm gonna make sort of a baggier short.
I don't know I can get this all done
before runway,
but I think I have to try, at least.
I really tried to be calm down this time.
I don't want to freak out.

I'm okay with time.
That turned out quite cute, no?
I think I wanna change the entire look.
The blue does not go with the trench.

I'm not sure that the denim

I've just tried the look on the model,

I'm just gonna have to sew

and I have to work on the belt also,
so that's what I'm worried about.
There's so much to do.
Jesus!
This is the stupidest thing I've done
in the entire competition.
[Marco] I just made a bra.
I don't really know how long it takes

- Touch it. It looks like a box.
Hmm, inside's very stiff.

the extraordinary Elizabeth Stewart.
- [sighs]
- [man] Sixty seconds.
- Feel like I'm out of time.
- Sixty seconds to the runway show.
We're also extremely honored
to welcome not one,
but two guests judges this week.
Joining us on the runway today,
is a bold design duo
whose work redefines
the fashion landscape.
Their cool and classic designs
have received many an accolade
since their brand launched in 2008.
Please welcome, from Public School,
Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow.
I'm happy. I mean, 45 minutes ago,
there was no shorts,
and now there's shorts,
and the look is together,
so this is dope.
Can you tell us
how Public School was born?
Really, Public School was born for
our love affair of New York.
Dao-Yi and I were both born and raised
in New York City.
This was our homage to it.
[Daniel] Sorry.
[man] Thirty seconds to models
on the runway, please.
[Minju] It looks so strong.
I'm satisfied with the look.
Hey, it looks amazing.
Oh, it looks amazing. I'm so excited.
How does military influence your designs?
Well, you can't talk about military
without talking about uniform.
- [Tan] Yeah.
- For us, the idea of structure
and clean lines and a strong shoulder,
- that is part of our aesthetic. So
- Mm-hmm.
So military plays a big, big part
in when we're thinking about
how to create sort of that perfect
New York uniform.
- [man] Three, two
- You have to stop working!
To the runway. Models to the runway.
- Standby, here we go.
- [laughing]
[shouting]
[Daniel] It's only six of us.
This is awful.
- Is everyone ready?
- [audience cheering]
[Tan] Let the military runway begin.
[pop music playing]
[woman] Ready, guys?
- Whoa!
- It looks awesome!
Three, two, one, go.
Wow!
- I like the sleeves a lot.
- I love the sleeves.
[Alexa] I love that fabric, actually.
I think it's really nice.
I mean, just all the
- combining of the
- [Alexa] Yeah.
at the hem. I love it.
It's super fresh. I love a cape.
It looks amazing. I'm super happy with it.
Nice. I love the shorts.
They're cool.
- Yeah, I like the little waist harness.
- Mm-hmm.
[Tan] Do you like his take on military?
Other than the pockets,
I'm not seeing a lot of military.
[Elizabeth Stewart] It's a nice take
involving a sexy vibe,
which, normally,
I think he carries it too far.
- [Tan] Yeah, me too.
- [Stewart] I think this is good.
Three, two, one, go.
- Oh, yeah.
- It looks beautiful.
- I love the shape.
- The shape
That's great.
[Maxwell Osborne]
You get the military background
- and it's still, you know, very military.
- It's a great coat.
I wish she maybe developed
a little bit more like that on this.
Like that cross harness.
It needs something,
but that wasn't enough.
She did struggle with time on this one.
The denim is an interesting choice
in fabric.
I think it's good. Sharp tailoring.
But to me,
it lacks a bit of a military vibe,
unless you take the hood as sealed.
Like a diver or something.
[Tan] When we first saw it,
it didn't look this way.
[Alexa]
He initially had a different color pant.
[Stewart] Sexy.
[Tan] Maxwell, thoughts?
It's not a shoppable look.
You know what it is, I like the shoulder.
I like one with the bad girl attitude.
- Like, that's his military
- Yes.
- [Stewart] I think it's good.
- It was like really
- superhero more than military.
- [Alexa] Mm-hmm.
[Dao-Yi Chow]
It just got a little costume-y.
Three, two, one, go.
This is nerve-racking.
I like the jumpsuit.
I don't love the jacket.
- The shape looks really strong.
- [Alexa] Yeah.
But I don't even get a lot of military
in that as well.
[Alexa] I think it's fine.
You can't win Next in Fashion being fine.
- [cheering]
- Congratulations, guys!
Shall we go backstage now
and have a little chat with them?
Yes, please.
[laughs]
[Alexa]
Can you tell us about your look today?
The idea comes from the tent
in Moonrise Kingdom.
I really loved that movie.
You can basically see the triangle shape,
and this jacket can be wear in multi-way.
If I open it here
[Alexa] Oh! And so you went for a skirt,
not trousers.
Is that a time thing
- or a style choice?
- No. I've been doing trousers
throughout all the challenges.
- Okay.
- So I think it's better
for me to bring something new.
The fabric started out like the skirt
and you filled it?
- Yes. I quilt it.
- [Chow] Wow, that's great.
- I add a fill.
- [Chow] That was a brave choice.
The skirt is amazing.
I absolutely love it.
- [laughs]
- I love the articulated sleeve a lot.
The exposed zippers
gives it a nice military feel.
I like it a lot with the coat on.
With the coat off,
I don't love it as much.
- Can you turn around for us?
- Sure.
Yeah. I love the shape in the back, also.
Color choice was great. I mean,
it's a slight nod to the theme.
Well, I'm glad you got it finished
in time.
- Yeah.
- [Alexa] Congratulations.
- Best of luck to you.
- Good job
- Thank you.
- Hello, dear.
- Hi, Tan.
- Hello, Charles.
- Hi, Elizabeth.
[Stewart] The inspiration is great,
but I think the cut of this jacket
I just don't love it because it gives it
a little bit of a mumsy feel somehow.
Can we see it with the jacket off?
I think the jumpsuit is fantastic.
I love the pant in particular.
- Here's my difficulty with it.
- [Charles] Yes.
- I love the jumpsuit.
- [Charles] But not together.
She doesn't look fresh and cool
with it together.
It does also look mumsy.
The challenge is no longer
how quickly can you sew something
and how beautifully can you craft it.
Now we want to see your soul.
I want to feel Charles.
I did design from the heart,
but I'm always afraid
of pushing it too far,
- to the point where it looks costume.
- Sure.
Overall thoughts, Elizabeth.
- Very strong, well-executed.
- Thank you.
The end effect, somehow,
is not maybe as fun as a sailor look.
- Okay.
- Good luck, Charles.
Bye, Tan. Thank you, Elizabeth.
[Alexa]
Tell us about your look. What inspired it?
[Marco]
It was all based on the USO pinup girl.
- I really love the color story a lot.
- Thank you.
[Osborne] It definitely stood out
when it was walking on the runway.
Can we see the jacket open?
This is the little bra that's underneath.
- Oh, that's beautifully done.
- Yeah.
[Alexa] And so you got rid of the cape.
I got rid of the cape. The superhero
comment scared me a little.
I did get a little bit superhero vibe
from it.
I wish that the top silhouette
was a little bit more referential.
The pinup idea could have really
come across
- in a stronger sense.
- [Marco] Absolutely.
It's very revealing.
- And I didn't get that for this theme.
- Right.
I would have just covered up a bit
and used the same inspiration.
I love the chevron idea.
- Okay. Thank you so much.
- Thank you so much, Marco.
- It's a pleasure. Thank you.
- Pleasure. Thank you.
[woman] Thank you.
Hello, Ashton. Tell us
about your inspiration behind this look.
I wanted to do a deconstructed version
of a flight suit or a bomber jacket
and take details and elements
that you would find maybe
at the top of the bomber
and bring it into the pants.
I love a monochromatic look.
I think you executed it really well.
It's a very, very smart design.
And you've added military into this
without belaboring it.
The hero piece is your jacket.
It is a take on a bomber jacket
that I've never seen before.
The short is great, beautifully executed.
I made these today in 45 minutes.
- The short?
- [laughs] Yeah.
They're lovely.
And the fact that you can do that
in 45 minutes blows my mind. It does.
But I wish it felt slightly
more military-inspired.
Other than that,
you've made our job really difficult.
[laughs] So we're gonna leave you here.
- Good luck.
- Of course.
- Thank you so much.
- Thank you, guys. Appreciate it.
- [laughs] Well?
- [squeals]
- Hi, Minju. So, guys, what do you think?
- Hi.
This looks is all about the coat for me.
The pleat here, the detail, to me
seem like a new take on an epaulette.
I thought it was great.
- The harness feels a little unfinished.
- [Alexa] This bit.
I made it, actually, last minute.
- Can we see it without that?
- [Minju] Yeah.
I think it's interesting
without the harness.
Maybe it didn't need that.
Can I ask you what's underneath?
[Minju] So sleeveless leather dress.
[Osborne] I think the dress by itself
is not my favorite.
But I do like the way
it gives it strength,
in an almost idyllic armor vibe.
It feels like it's armor underneath.
Do you think this look is gonna
push you through to the top four?
[laughing] Yeah, I think so.
- [Chow] Good.
- [Alexa] Best of luck.
- We'll see you afterwards.
- [Osborne] Good luck.
- Congratulations.
- Thank you. Oh!
I'm so confused. I left you yesterday,
and you had scrubs that were
not far off the color
than what Elizabeth's wearing.
And today, we have a full black look
under there. What's going on?
It was like absolute hell this morning,
but I knew that the blue look was wrong.
I tried it on her, and I was like,
"It's too much. It doesn't work."
So then today, I had to do
an entire new top and trousers.
I really think it was the right thing
to do because I'm much happier with this.
It was a bold, brave move.
I really miss the blue.
I do.
When I saw that you did it in black,
I was actually very disappointed.
- Oh, no!
- [Tan] I'm not gonna lie.
And I actually prefer the blue
against this.
Elizabeth, tell me what you think, please.
The tailoring on this coat is great.
I love it.
I like the simplicity of it.
The military inspiration, maybe for me,
was a teeny bit lost.
I wish this was a slightly
stronger collar.
I wish this was just a little bit sharper
overall.
The finishing is incredible.
You had two days, but
on the runway, it was hard to read.
Black has to be very, very strong
to carry through on the runway.
And so, just between the two colors,
blue is gonna be better.
I truly, truly hope that this
doesn't cost you
a place in the final four.
- So long, Daniel.
- Thank you.
- Good luck.
- Thanks.
Yo.
You guys. We have six designers left.
Yeah, this is really a tough and critical
point in the entire competition.
We have to pick a winner,
and we also have to pick
the two guys that are going home,
so let's start with the winner.
Give me two names each.
Angel and Minju. Gonna be a tough one.
Angel and Minju.
Angel, Minju.
Two names. Angel and Angel.
[both] Oh!
And here's a third name
Minju.
- [laughing]
- All right. All right.
Let's start with Angel.
I thought it was a really great
runway look.
It was an interesting fabric,
a really great take on military.
And for her to be able to construct
an outerwear piece and a skirt
in the same fabric,
I thought it was great.
When it came down the runway,
I really liked the A-shape,
and I liked the detail in the back.
In such a short time, she did a lot.
[Alexa] Let's talk about Minju.
[Stewart] I loved Minju.
She made a military greatcoat,
and she pulled it off.
I thought the color was great.
I just really liked it.
[Chow] The shoulder detailing
sort of set it apart,
and it got back
to her more feminine roots.
Very thoughtful, clean.
Okay, now let's focus
on the doom and gloom.
Who do we think should go home?
Just six of you left,
and challenge after challenge,
you guys continue to blow us away.
And tonight, seeing your military looks
was so inspiring.
[Alexa] We've made our decision.
Tonight's winning designer
who will be coming with us
to the semifinals, is
Angel.
[Minju] Yay!
Congratulations.
Angel, how are you feeling?
- I feel, like, really excited.
- [laughs]
It's kind of amazing, Angel,
'cause yesterday you had so little done.
I wasn't sure you were even gonna finish.
I'm always really slow compared
to the rest of these talented designers.
My time management
is definitely a problem.
For me, it definitely had
a clear point of view,
and the use of your fabrics
was really strong.
Yeah. I mean, I think,
silhouette, fabric choice, concept,
execution, it all came together.
Thank you.
Angel, you are our first designer
to make it through to the semifinals.
Congratulations.
Unfortunately, I can't say the same
for all of you.
[Alexa] We're gonna ask three designers
to step forward.
From those three,
we will be saying goodbye to two.
The first designer that we would like
to step forward is
Daniel.
The next designer we would like
to step forward is
Marco.
And the third designer
in danger tonight is
Charles.
Daniel, you're so good.
It's painful to see you up here.
But the coat,
which was a brilliant design,
but you have scared it
with really sad fabric choices,
and it just sort of fell flat,
and we didn't see it on the runway.
[Tan] I so wish you hadn't
changed your mind this morning
to not do the blue scrubs.
If you done the blue scrubs, this would
have been a different conversation.
Fair assessment? Right or wrong?
You can say either way.
No, absolutely.
I agree with everything you've said.
I expected to be in this position tonight.
I knew that I took a risk
in changing from the blue
to the black at the last minute.
It didn't have the same punch
on the runway as it should have had.
I would just really love
to make it to the final
and show you what I can do.
Charles, you are so highly skilled
in what you do.
- Thank you.
- But I want to feel your passion
in your clothes
without you having to say one single word.
And I didn't get that
from your clothes tonight.
The jumpsuit with your top piece,
it felt a little separated
and like it was designed
by two different people,
and the theme didn't come together.
Charles,
a beautifully constructed jumpsuit.
Then you hid it underneath that shawl.
At this point in the competition,
it's just getting really nitpicky.
I agree. We have to nitpick
because we're amongst
very talented people.
But I just want you guys
to let you know personally
that I do always design with my heart.
I just need to design with more heart.
Thank you.
Marco, it definitely felt
like a superhero costume.
[Stewart] You had good ideas there.
The chevron was fantastic.
I just didn't want to see a pinup look.
It just didn't work for me.
I definitely understand your criticism,
and I appreciate it.
[laughs] I do see the superhero.
It's definitely something
that concerned me.
I do feel like I have more to show.
Hopefully, I stay.
But if I go, I go on good terms.
It's been really difficult to reach,
but we do have a decision.
The designer that we've all agreed
is safe tonight
is
Daniel.
Thank you.
How are you feeling?
A whole mix of emotions right now.
Like, I know that I can do better,
and I didn't want to go out
on this challenge.
[Marco snickers]
I'm just really grateful to you guys
for giving me another chance.
Thank you, you can step back. Thank you.
Charles, how are you feeling right now?
Truthfully,
I'm just feeling very blessed to be
in this competition at all.
I've met some beautiful people here
who made me realize things
that I haven't even realized
about myself before.
Um it's sad to have my journey
at this particular competition end here,
but I'm extremely humbled by it.
What's next for Charles?
It's different for everybody else.
They have their own brand.
And you were the only person
that came into this competition
without your own brand.
I'm heading back to Dubai,
and I'm going to see if I can
just start a small line,
because I think it's about time
the world knows what I'm capable of,
not what I'm producing
under someone else's name that is my work.
Marco, Marco.
Oh, how are you feeling?
I feel good.
This was such an amazing experience.
I really didn't think
I was gonna get this far,
but I'm really proud of Ashton and
I mean, you picked my top four,
but he better win!
[laughing]
Pressure.
Thank you so much, both of you.
It was a fricking pleasure having you
in this competition.
Bye.
Good night.
Along this competition,
I learned new things about myself.
I never knew what I was
even capable of doing.
I learned that I could do,
you know, streetwear,
I could do activewear.
And I've met people I would have to live
20 lifetimes to come across.
- Oh, my God!
- [laughing]
This is the most positive experience
I've ever had in the fashion industry.
I think I learned a lot
about my own confidence.
I'm gonna take all this stuff
that I learned and apply it to what I do,
and I'm excited
to see what comes from that.
Some of the highlights for me have been
winning the underwear challenge.
I loved our red carpet moment.
I'm really glad Ashton's still here.
- That means a lot to me.
- [Charles] You have a really pure heart.
- [laughs]
- You do.
- Thank you.
- 'Cause everything you say is
I'm just gonna tell it frankly.
You do. You say everything with, like,
this huge amount of humbleness,
- veiled by humor.
- He's been drinking.
[laughing]
What a night, guys. That was oof!
But look, four of you
are going to the semifinal.
Congratulations!
There's just one more challenge
before the finale.
Just one more!
So for now,
gentlemen, ladies
at ease.
Time to go. Sorry.
- Okay, that's it.
- [Alexa] That's it.
- [Chow] Okay.
- Congratulations.
- [Alexa] Congrats, everyone.
- [Angel] Thank you.
[designers groaning]
Ugh!
- Ay-yi-yi!
- Ugh! Au revoir to Marco and Charles.
Yeah. And can you believe
the semifinals are next?
- I know.
- Click on to see.
- It's so good, it's so good, it's so good.
- Press the button for the semifinal
- of Next in Fashion.
- So good.
[theme music playing]
[woman vocalizing]
- Welcome back to Next in Fashion.
We have six designers remaining,
and the next challenge is
about a very powerful fashion influence,
which has inspired many,
many cool designs.
It is, of course, military.
- Does it have to be cool?
- [laughs] I mean, I guess not.
Lex, wait!
[pop music playing]
- Wow!
- Hey, I'm this one?
[Marco] Here we go. It's getting smaller.
[Ashton] Words I never never like to hear
coming out of anybody.
- [laughing]
- My hands are shaking.
Is there anything else new, Charles?
Higher levels of anxiety.
[laughs]
- [Tan France] Morning, everyone.
- [Alexa Chung] Hello!
- Hi!
- 'Tis us!
- Hey!
- [Tan] Come join us.
- [laughing]
- Ooh!
[Tan] Hi, everyone. Welcome back.
- Alexa
- Yeah.
- That's it, final six!
- I know!
At the beginning, I seen, like,
18 people, and then now,
shrink to six people.
It's definitely going to be,
like, more competitive,
because everyone's going to show
their best.
[Alexa] I mean,
this competition's really getting
- down to the wire now.
- [Tan] Yeah.
And there's so much talent in this room.
But only two challenges are gonna stand
between you guys
and the grand finale of Next in Fashion.
This next challenge is
all about a major fashion influence.
It's a [clears throat]
salute to great style.
[Alexa] Yeah, yeah, that's right.
I'm sorry about Tan's puns,
and I'm sorry for this, Minju.
[Minju groans]
[Alexa] You're already sensing
what's about to happen.
Today is all about military.
[groans]
It's a good one, Minju!
Minju, what's going on?
It's a really good one!
Ugh! Military, no, no, no!
I don't wanna do military.
I don't know how can I translate
the military in my way.
It sounds so aggressive, and I don't like
the color palette of the military.
You know?
Military's about, like, a camouflage.
You have to hide in nature,
and then, boom.
But I'm the popping-up person.
I'm right standing here,
wearing the yellow.
I'm wearing the blue, like that.
- The Minju army of peace and love.
- Yeah.
[laughing]
Do any of you like to use
military-inspired pieces in your life,
at all?
Oh, good. Ashton.
I did an all-pink
military-inspired collection,
then three weeks later
Beyoncé wore it for the Tidal launch.
- Wow!
- Amazing.
Military uniforms have had an undeniable
impact on fashion from day one.
I'm talking bomber jackets, cargo pants,
jumpsuits, this kind of girdle area,
camouflage.
So we want you to pull inspiration
from military uniforms,
in a way that honors its intended purpose,
but then, still makes it fashion.
Tomorrow is your next runway show.
- Alexa and I will be judging
- With our judgy eyes.
[laughing]
And we are welcoming back
the incredible stylist
that is Queen Elizabeth.
You can call her Elizabeth Stewart.
And of course, we'll have a special
guest judge with us.
Yeah, and actually, this time,
there's two of them.
They're a design duo
that put themselves on the map
with their sharp, sophisticated
and perfectly tailored sportswear.
We'll be welcoming, from Public School,
Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow.
[gasps] Public School!
[Tan] They are incredible. I've been
a huge fan of theirs for literally years.
[Charles] Public School is perfect
for this challenge.
I love their style
because they're rule-breakers.
You will each present just one complete
military-inspired look.
Now, please direct your attention
to the masterpiece that is
the Next in Fashion closet.
[Minju] Hmm.
- [Angel] Ooh!
- [Ashton] Wow!
[Tan] We have assembled an army
of embellishments,
fabrics and everything you could
possibly need.
One of you will be the winner
of this challenge,
and unfortunately,
at this crucial point in the competition,
we're gonna have to say goodbye
to two of you
after tomorrow's runway show.
Troops! Attention!
Your time starts
[laughing]
now!
[Charles] Oh, this is nice.
- [Tan] Okay, military.
- [Alexa] Yes.
A lot of people don't realize
that almost everyone across the globe
has something military-inspired.
A bell-bottom, combat boots,
- a bomber jacket.
- Yeah.
A trench coat. It was invented
for the British military.
My inspiration is the military patches
that are chevrons.
Military clothing is,
for all intents and purposes,
- fairly utilitarian.
- [Tan] Yeah.
So how do they embellish it
or do something with it,
to make it high fashion?
[Charles] My immediate thing I want
to go for is, like, naval-themed,
because it's clean, it's polished,
it's very recognizable.
So, I'm going to be making
a naval-inspired jumpsuit
in white pleather, with gold buttons,
and I'm also making a wrap
trench jacket shawl
with leather detailing
and some blue suede.
My aesthetic is definitely very modern,
very architectural.
It's almost mathematical in construction
because I based some things on logic.
It's gonna be really cute.
- [laughing]
- I don't know what I'm gonna do.
[shouts]
I don't know.
I don't know what I should choose.
Do you like this? No? All right.
Military is so hard.
[drum and bass music playing]
I'm gonna do a denim trench coat,
which is quite oversized
with binding exposed on the outside.
I was thinking maybe that it could
pay homage
to the medics who work in the military.
I found this really beautiful
blue shirting
that made me kind of think of,
like, hospital scrubs.
[Marco] My experience
with a military theme
is the occasional strong shoulder jacket
[laughing] for someone to wear
with no pants on stage.
So I wanna do something sexy.
I'm thinking about a cropped jacket
with a cape,
and then really short, like, booty short.
Sort of like a USO pinup version
of a military outfit.
In the past, the judges have said
that my work is too costume-y or extra,
but I'm gonna stick to my guns
on what I'd like to do.
- [Daniel] You okay, Minju?
- I love this.
I was asking for this
and then already took by you.
Oh. You know, you can take it.
- Really?
- Yeah, yeah.
- Really?
- Yeah.
- Really?
- Yeah, just take it.
[shouts, laughs]
Finally, I have really nice fabric,
thanks to Daniel.
- Thank you, Daniel. Thank you.
- Okay, it's okay.
I feel a bit sad and stressed
and nervous about two people going home.
I think now the group is getting
really, really small right now,
and all the designers right here
is very talented and competitive.
[Alexa] Ashton!
- Hello, Ashton.
- Howdy.
What are we making?
[Ashton] We're making a deconstructed
harnessed bomber,
and the bottom, I'm gonna do
a knee-length short.
A little bit more like
tactical tough detailing,
and this will be a big,
kind of bomber sleeve.
So I'm gonna give volume here,
pulled in here,
and then sort of, like,
sassy on the bottom.
- Nice.
- [Tan] I love it.
Of everybody in this room,
you're the one who has actually
done military before.
Like, Beyoncé wore it.
How are you feeling about this challenge?
I'm feeling a little nervous because
military doesn't translate
into my personal life.
- Yeah.
- I'm much more
- into nature, and
- Okay.
I have a cabin
in which I escape to any time I can.
Oh! My cabin.
That is my sanctuary.
That is the one place I go to
when I really need to decompress.
I love to be surrounded by nature.
Most people think that I'm gonna be
this gnarly pit bull,
and I'm gonna be aggressive.
But I'm wildly passionate about flowers.
And they're like,
"What is wrong with you?"
I've got nothing else
to say other than "win."
- Thank you.
- Go win.
- Okay. Bye-bye!
- Appreciate it, guys.
- Hi, Angel!
- Hi, you guys!
- Hi, Angel. How are you?
- I'm great.
This looks like a nice fabric.
Can you show me what you're making?
[Angel] So I'm not sure you guys
have heard about a movie
called Moonrise Kingdom,
from Wes Anderson
- Oh, yeah, Wes Anderson.
- Yes, yes.
When boy scouts of that movie
ran away with a girl,
they're living
in a lovely little triangle tent
- when they escaped from their home.
- [Tan] Yeah, yeah.
So I'm going to make a tent-shaped
big bomber jacket.
[Alexa] Like a military quilted coat?
[Angel] Yeah, this is
kind of a military quilted coat.
But the shape is going to be
more similar to a tent.
- Okay.
- It's going to be really difficult.
So I'm actually making my own fabric.
Oh! All right.
- Yeah.
- Very ambitious. What's underneath it?
[laughs] I haven't think about yet.
You worried about time?
[Angel] I think that's my biggest problem.
I know I'm always slow.
I will figure it out.
So you already have
a very established business.
What would it mean to have
your collections on Net-a-Porter?
Oh, my God.
That would be really, really, really good.
It's kind of like one of my dream,
'cause right now, mostly, my stock
has offline business.
- Bricks and mortar.
- [Angel] Yeah.
So Net-a-Porter would be
- the best platform for it.
- Right.
At the age of 27,
I've been in Business of Fashion 500,
and Forbes 30 Under 30
and also International Woolmark Prize.
So, I would describe myself as a young
Chinese generation leader.
I think it's my responsibility
to present Chinese culture to the world.
- Best of luck, Angel.
- Thank you. Thank you, guys.
[Daniel] I've already got the trousers
hung together,
but I've still got quite a bit to do,
and I haven't even started
on the trench coat.
Realistically, this coat is complicated.
I'm binding every seam,
which is using this
basically like a tape, and I, like,
put it on every single seam.
The only thing is that you have
to bind them before you sew it together.
- Oh, shut the [bleeps] up.
- Yeah, yeah.
- Oh, God.
- [laughing]
[Daniel] I don't know what I was thinking.
I am feeling a bit overwhelmed.
[Ashton gasps]
[Minju] You know, military is not for me.
So I'm a little bit worried,
but I cannot do something
without my heart.
So now I have the right fabric.
I'm going to make military look
inspired by Les Misérables.
When I watched that movie,
it's all about French Revolution,
you know?
But still, there's love, there's hope.
I'm gonna make the trench
with the military detail with it,
like the volume sleeve.
It's very historical shape,
because it's really strong, you know.
The power shoulder, you know.
[Marco]
I have the shell of my jacket done,
but I still have to
finish cutting the cape.
I feel pretty good about the cape.
I think it's gonna make it sexy.
I want to create something with puffs.
The construction of the coat is difficult.
This coat has three layers.
The surface layer is the metallic
silk fabric,
and then the inside layer, there is
a cream-colored polyester fabric.
I'm spending a lot of time on this coat.
I think I'm giving myself
too much challenge every time.
I'm a little nervous today, to be honest.
I'm nervous every day, that's wrong.
I'm feeling confident in my work.
I'm working so fast.
I have a lot of details,
I have a lot of construction.
So yes, my work is frantic,
but it will get finished.
- [Alexa] Hello!
- [Tan] Daniel-san!
Hi!
[Tan] What are you making, Daniel-san?
- I'm doing a denim trench coat.
- You're making a women's look?
Yeah, I am.
- [Tan] I'm surprised by that.
- [Alexa] Good.
I think because my brand is only menswear,
I have to push myself in this challenge.
- Think it's time to take a risk.
- Yeah.
What do you do out of work to have fun?
Like, going out in London is a bit crap,
actually.
Me and my friends, "Oh, well,
we should do something really fun."
So we started this night called Piggery,
and we dress as pigs.
[Alexa] A what? A pig party? I love that!
- Yeah.
- I don't understand.
It's not a big thing.
I do it with my sister
[laughs]
Yeah!
[Daniel] We invite all of our friends,
and we take over this bar,
and we just have a really great night
dressed as pigs.
I don't know how we ended up with pigs,
because, actually, half the people
I do it with are all vegan.
And we love pigs. It's really fun.
I don't know where to go from here.
- Oh, right.
- So can we pig off?
- Yeah.
- Come on!
- Oh, God. I can feel how red I am now.
- [Tan] Come on.
[Alexa] Pig sty! It's weird that they say
English people are eccentric.
We have two hours left.
I still have to do the jacket
and finish this jumpsuit.
This jumpsuit's almost done,
but the jacket's gonna take some time.
How's that binding going?
- Nearly done. On my last sleeve.
- [Ashton] Really?
- Yeah.
- [Ashton] Epic.
[Minju] This is really hard coat to make,
because I have to make the sleeve
with, like, pleats.
I wish I had more time always.
But I want to do it.
- [Tan] Marco, Marco. Hello.
- [Alexa] Marco!
- Oh, I love that color, Marco.
- Thank you.
I am taking inspiration from, like, 1940s.
Kind of like USO pinup girls.
- Oh, nice.
- [Alexa] Oh, cool.
- Oh, yeah.
- So, I'm kind of doing like this,
and then there's a little cape-let
in the back.
It looks almost superhero-esque.
It's a little superhero-esque.
I mean, that's
- That's a lot of what I do.
- [laughing]
Tan makes a comment
that it looks like a superhero.
And I know that it's because I've put
a cape on the back of my jacket.
Honestly, I'm not sure what to do.
- All right, good luck. Thanks, Marco.
- [Alexa] Bye!
Damn it.
How are you getting on now?
- [Ashton] What's that?
- How are you getting on?
[groans, laughs]
Attention!
You have one hour left, everyone.
Just 60 minutes remaining.
Oh, bollocks!
[Charles] I'm really happy.
The white jumpsuit looks like it can exist
in someone's closet.
[Marco] Ashton, what have I done?
I spent too much time making that cape.
I cut the cape off the back of the jacket.
I should probably just toss it,
but I put a lot of work into it.
I don't wanna lose that time.
So, now I'm going to make it
into a peplum.
Basically an overskirt.
Like, what was I actually thinking?
- Charles.
- Hi, Alexa.
Yeah, you look like you're in good shape.
[Charles] I am.
It's all about time management for me.
Literally work at my absolute
maximum capacity.
But I'm also a fast sew-er.

what happens tomorrow.
- I'll see you tomorrow.
- See you later, Charles.
See you around.

[Charles] There is
a competitive atmosphere going on.
If no one wants to admit, they're lying.
I have a lot to prove
in this whole competition.
Everyone here has their own brand,
except for me.
I could possibly win this,
and I want to win this.
We have six designers left
in this competition.
- Yeah.
- We've got some very ambitious ideas.
[Tan] And many of them are very,
very far behind.
Shall we start with Minju?
Yeah. So, Minju is creating
a Les Misérables- inspired outfit.
Whoo! I have to finish it.
I'm worried because I'm really not sure
what I'm gonna make underneath.
So I have lots of things for tomorrow.
By the end of today, I hope
to have the jacket sewn together,
because that's the most important part.
This coat is definitely a difficult one.
I kind of spent the whole day
on the construction.
So tomorrow I'm going to make a skirt.
So that's a lot.
That's really, really a lot.

- I think the color's beautiful.
- Yeah.
[Daniel] The trench coat is nearly there,
and I think it looks good.
But in the back of my mind, I'm not sure
that the trench coat and the blue
hospital scrubs work together.
I'm not really gonna know
if it works or not,
until I see it on a model tomorrow.
- On the opposite end of the scale
- Yeah.
someone I'm absolutely
not concerned about
with their time management is Charles,
who is basically finished.
He's gonna kick back and get a pedicure,
at this rate.
[Tan] Yeah. He produces
some beautifully crafted work,
but do I feel super passionate about it?
I don't think so.

Also,

You can use this cuff to hide things in.

you've made our job really difficult.
[laughs] So we're gonna leave you here.
- Good luck.
- Of course.
- Thank you so much.
- Thank you, guys. Appreciate it.
- [laughs] Well?
- [squeals]
- Hi, Minju. So, guys, what do you think?
- Hi.
This looks is all about the coat for me.
The pleat here, the detail, to me
seem like a new take on an epaulette.
I thought it was great.
- The harness feels a little unfinished.
- [Alexa] This bit.
I made it, actually, last minute.
- Can we see it without that?
- [Minju] Yeah.
I think it's interesting
without the harness.
Maybe it didn't need that.
Can I ask you what's underneath?
[Minju] So sleeveless leather dress.
[Osborne] I think the dress by itself
is not my favorite.
But I do like the way
it gives it strength,
in an almost idyllic armor vibe.
It feels like it's armor underneath.
Do you think this look is gonna
push you through to the top four?
[laughing] Yeah, I think so.
- [Chow] Good.
- [Alexa] Best of luck.
- We'll see you afterwards.
- [Osborne] Good luck.
- Congratulations.
- Thank you. Oh!
I'm so confused. I left you yesterday,
and you had scrubs that were
not far off the color
than what Elizabeth's wearing.
And today, we have a full black look
under there. What's going on?
It was like absolute hell this morning,
but I knew that the blue look was wrong.
I tried it on her, and I was like,
"It's too much. It doesn't work."
So then today, I had to do
an entire new top and trousers.
I really think it was the right thing
to do because I'm much happier with this.
It was a bold, brave move.
I really miss the blue.
I do.
When I saw that you did it in black,
I was actually very disappointed.
- Oh, no!
- [Tan] I'm not gonna lie.
And I actually prefer the blue
against this.
Elizabeth, tell me what you think, please.
The tailoring on this coat is great.
I love it.
I like the simplicity of it.
The military inspiration, maybe for me,
was a teeny bit lost.
I wish this was a slightly
stronger collar.
I wish this was just a little bit sharper
overall.
The finishing is incredible.
You had two days, but
on the runway, it was hard to read.
Black has to be very, very strong
to carry through on the runway.
And so, just between the two colors,
blue is gonna be better.
I truly, truly hope that this
doesn't cost you
a place in the final four.
- So long, Daniel.
- Thank you.
- Good luck.
- Thanks.
Yo.
You guys. We have six designers left.
Yeah, this is really a tough and critical
point in the entire competition.
We have to pick a winner,
and we also have to pick
the two guys that are going home,
so let's start with the winner.
Give me two names each.
Angel and Minju. Gonna be a tough one.
Angel and Minju.
Angel, Minju.
Two names. Angel and Angel.
[both] Oh!
And here's a third name
Minju.
- [laughing]
- All right. All right.
Let's start with Angel.
I thought it was a really great
runway look.
It was an interesting fabric,
a really great take on military.
And for her to be able to construct
an outerwear piece and a skirt
in the same fabric,
I thought it was great.
When it came down the runway,
I really liked the A-shape,
and I liked the detail in the back.
In such a short time, she did a lot.
[Alexa] Let's talk about Minju.
[Stewart] I loved Minju.
She made a military greatcoat,
and she pulled it off.
I thought the color was great.
I just really liked it.
[Chow] The shoulder detailing
sort of set it apart,
and it got back
to her more feminine roots.
Very thoughtful, clean.
Okay, now let's focus
on the doom and gloom.
Who do we think should go home?
Just six of you left,
and challenge after challenge,
you guys continue to blow us away.
And tonight, seeing your military looks
was so inspiring.
[Alexa] We've made our decision.
Tonight's winning designer
who will be coming with us
to the semifinals, is
Angel.
[Minju] Yay!
Congratulations.
Angel, how are you feeling?
- I feel, like, really excited.
- [laughs]
It's kind of amazing, Angel,
'cause yesterday you had so little done.
I wasn't sure you were even gonna finish.
I'm always really slow compared
to the rest of these talented designers.
My time management
is definitely a problem.
For me, it definitely had
a clear point of view,
and the use of your fabrics
was really strong.
Yeah. I mean, I think,
silhouette, fabric choice, concept,
execution, it all came together.
Thank you.
Angel, you are our first designer
to make it through to the semifinals.
Congratulations.
Unfortunately, I can't say the same
for all of you.
[Alexa] We're gonna ask three designers
to step forward.
From those three,
we will be saying goodbye to two.
The first designer that we would like
to step forward is
Daniel.
The next designer we would like
to step forward is
Marco.
And the third designer
in danger tonight is
Charles.
Daniel, you're so good.
It's painful to see you up here.
But the coat,
which was a brilliant design,
but you have scared it
with really sad fabric choices,
and it just sort of fell flat,
and we didn't see it on the runway.
[Tan] I so wish you hadn't
changed your mind this morning
to not do the blue scrubs.
If you done the blue scrubs, this would
have been a different conversation.
Fair assessment? Right or wrong?
You can say either way.
No, absolutely.
I agree with everything you've said.
I expected to be in this position tonight.
I knew that I took a risk
in changing from the blue
to the black at the last minute.
It didn't have the same punch
on the runway as it should have had.
I would just really love
to make it to the final
and show you what I can do.
Charles, you are so highly skilled
in what you do.
- Thank you.
- But I want to feel your passion
in your clothes
without you having to say one single word.
And I didn't get that
from your clothes tonight.
The jumpsuit with your top piece,
it felt a little separated
and like it was designed
by two different people,
and the theme didn't come together.
Charles,
a beautifully constructed jumpsuit.
Then you hid it underneath that shawl.
At this point in the competition,
it's just getting really nitpicky.
I agree. We have to nitpick
because we're amongst
very talented people.
But I just want you guys
to let you know personally
that I do always design with my heart.
I just need to design with more heart.
Thank you.
Marco, it definitely felt
like a superhero costume.
[Stewart] You had good ideas there.
The chevron was fantastic.
I just didn't want to see a pinup look.
It just didn't work for me.
I definitely understand your criticism,
and I appreciate it.
[laughs] I do see the superhero.
It's definitely something
that concerned me.
I do feel like I have more to show.
Hopefully, I stay.
But if I go, I go on good terms.
It's been really difficult to reach,
but we do have a decision.
The designer that we've all agreed
is safe tonight
is
Daniel.
Thank you.
How are you feeling?
A whole mix of emotions right now.
Like, I know that I can do better,
and I didn't want to go out
on this challenge.
[Marco snickers]
I'm just really grateful to you guys
for giving me another chance.
Thank you, you can step back. Thank you.
Charles, how are you feeling right now?
Truthfully,
I'm just feeling very blessed to be
in this competition at all.
I've met some beautiful people here
who made me realize things
that I haven't even realized
about myself before.
Um it's sad to have my journey
at this particular competition end here,
but I'm extremely humbled by it.
What's next for Charles?
It's different for everybody else.
They have their own brand.
And you were the only person
that came into this competition
without your own brand.
I'm heading back to Dubai,
and I'm going to see if I can
just start a small line,
because I think it's about time
the world knows what I'm capable of,
not what I'm producing
under someone else's name that is my work.
Marco, Marco.
Oh, how are you feeling?
I feel good.
This was such an amazing experience.
I really didn't think
I was gonna get this far,
but I'm really proud of Ashton and
I mean, you picked my top four,
but he better win!
[laughing]
Pressure.
Thank you so much, both of you.
It was a fricking pleasure having you
in this competition.
Bye.
Good night.
Along this competition,
I learned new things about myself.
I never knew what I was
even capable of doing.
I learned that I could do,
you know, streetwear,
I could do activewear.
And I've met people I would have to live
20 lifetimes to come across.
- Oh, my God!
- [laughing]
This is the most positive experience
I've ever had in the fashion industry.
I think I learned a lot
about my own confidence.
I'm gonna take all this stuff
that I learned and apply it to what I do,
and I'm excited
to see what comes from that.
Some of the highlights for me have been
winning the underwear challenge.
I loved our red carpet moment.
I'm really glad Ashton's still here.
- That means a lot to me.
- [Charles] You have a really pure heart.
- [laughs]
- You do.
- Thank you.
- 'Cause everything you say is
I'm just gonna tell it frankly.
You do. You say everything with, like,
this huge amount of humbleness,
- veiled by humor.
- He's been drinking.
[laughing]
What a night, guys. That was oof!
But look, four of you
are going to the semifinal.
Congratulations!
There's just one more challenge
before the finale.
Just one more!
So for now,
gentlemen, ladies
at ease.
Time to go. Sorry.
- Okay, that's it.
- [Alexa] That's it.
- [Chow] Okay.
- Congratulations.
- [Alexa] Congrats, everyone.
- [Angel] Thank you.
[designers groaning]
Ugh!
- Ay-yi-yi!
- Ugh! Au revoir to Marco and Charles.
Yeah. And can you believe
the semifinals are next?
- I know.
- Click on to see.
- It's so good, it's so good, it's so good.
- Press the button for the semifinal
- of Next in Fashion.
- So good.
[theme music playing]
[woman vocalizing]
