The Manny (2023) s01e08 Episode Script

Cuando te toca, aunque te quites

1
[music playing faintly]
The account where my dad sent the payments
belongs to an anonymous society
that's got nothing to do with them.
And they're saying
they've never even received the money.
Thanks, ma'am.
But the email, with the new
account details is from the agency.
Why don't you tell your father?
How do I explain how I know?
Romina, I can't tell him anything
till I solve this.
What will you do?
I'll go back to Tepa
to see what I can find out.
And you're running out of that ham.
[gasps]
[pensive music playing]
Gaby, I can explain.
What in the!? Romina!
You gotta stop all this!
No, I don't!
You two like each other.
Jimena's incredible.
But all she's done is avoid me
after the thing with Brenda happened.
When she finds out I've been lying,
she's gonna hate me.
You know that I can't be thinking
about being with her.
It's not like I wished for it.
It was a vision that just came to me.
Something divine and beautiful.
Something positive will come from this!
Get rid of it.
Please don't get me in more trouble.
[blowing]
When it's meant to be,
there's nothing you can do.
And when it's not meant to be,
you can't force it.
[sighs]
[theme song playing]
THE MANNY
And remember,
there's enough food in the fridge
to last you the whole weekend.
-Thanks, Martha, see you later.
-Let's go Irma!
I'm just a little annoyed that
you didn't ask for permission, that's all.
I'm sorry, but I just worry
about what Dad would do without me.
-Isn't that what Mich is back for?
-[Sofía] Mom, she's even worse.
You know that Mich doesn't really
have both of her feet on the ground.
-[laughs]
-[Jimena chuckles]
Look, truth is, I miss you,
but I get that you feel calmer
at his house.
Your brothers are on their way
to stay the weekend.
Okay.
-Thanks. I love you.
-[Jimena] I love you.
[sighs]
[light flickering]
[whimsical music playing]
-Surely that can wait until Monday.
-Oh! Gaby!
I thought that you'd left already.
Uh, it won't take me long, but thanks.
-I'll bring pork back from Tepa.
-Yeah, yeah, that's great.
-Say goodbye, Arete.
-[Arete grunts softly]
Bye, Arete.
-[loud thud]
-[Jimena screams]
[groans]
-What happened? You okay?
-I'm fine.
-Where does it hurt?
-No, don't.
-Let me see.
-Ow, ow, ow, don't touch me!
[groaning]
I told you to wait until Monday.
-Wait, I'll help you up.
-No, no, no! Be careful.
-[Gabriel] All right.
-Careful! [groans]
There.
-[Jimena groans]
-[grunts]
-[Gabriel sighs]
-[Jimena whimpers]
Listen, I think you gotta go
to the hospital.
[groaning] Oh! Oh!
-[woman] Let's take these criminals down!
-[man] Come out here!
The land belongs to
those of us who work it!
-Protect your people!
-Show your face, Navarrete!
You gotta fix this, Rogelio.
[protestor on video]
Look what you've done to us!
-How's it come to this?
-Don't worry, I'm on it.
[Ernesto] If we don't fix this,
the finance company and my political
ambitions are going to go to hell.
I'll fix it. I promise.
Hmm? When have I let you down?
I hope so.
[protestor] Show your face, Navarrete!
[doorbell rings]
Namaste, brothers.
Welcome to paradise.
Here.
This is for you two.
Right now, Mich's mood
is all good stepmom.
So we can do whatever we want to.
-There are no rules.
-Well well, who do we have here.
My two favorite sons.
Come and hug your father.
Welcome.
You're just in time
for the best breakfast of your life.
-You'll see.
-Hmm?
-Hmm. I love you.
-Hmm.
Blech!
-You're so gorgeous, I'm a very lucky man.
-Hey, kids, this is wonderful.
Someone told me
you don't sleep with the lights on.
This will bring you peace.
-Come in.
-Oh yeah.
[Joaquín] Come on now, guys,
don't be shy. Please.
Well, thank you so much for all of that!
Are you sure I can't stay?
Oh no, no, no. It's already, uh
I'm gonna call Brenda.
It's all under control and
-Uh
-Oh. I've got it. I've got it.
[grunts softly]
I'll wait until
she tells you she's on her way.
-Yeah?
-Okay. Sure.
Thanks.
[phone ringing]
Mmm.
-You know I'm not working today.
-No, I'm not calling about
It's just I've I've hurt my foot,
and I need you to come help me,
and maybe while you're
[Brenda] I'm at that spa I told you about,
and you know the drill, Jimena,
relaxation and sex only. Ask Martha.
I already told her she could
have the weekend to herself.
-What?
-Well, I gave the team a vacation.
[scoffs] What for?
Because I don't wanna see Gabriel.
I've been waking up at 5:00 a.m. every day
just to not run into him
after what happened.
If I only gave him time off
and not the others,
he'd have got suspicious.
What could I do?
Oh, Jimena, you like your manny.
Instead of avoiding him, give him
some kisses and other little things.
Uh You like him, and rule number one is
"Don't hook up with your friend's crush."
No, no. He was never my crush.
We didn't have sex. All thanks to you.
Don't use me as an excuse.
He's your crush, and you won't accept it
because he's your manny.
Well No! That's your imagination.
Sure. Keep lying to yourself,
but you two are hanging out
for the entire weekend, okay?
-N No
-Look, I gotta go because I'm super busy.
-Take care!
-No, no! B-B-B-Brenda!
-Hello!
-[man] Hello.
She on her way?
Uh [chuckles timidly]
Yes, she is, um
Do you think that
you could stay with me today?
Of course! I can stay, of course!
Thing is, I'm writing the annual speech
for the company meeting,
and, uh, Rogelio normally writes it,
but my father put me in charge,
so I gotta outdo myself.
Look, I'm only gonna call for help
if it's really serious.
I also got a lotta things to do,
so, sounds good.
-Fantastic. Perfect.
-[Gabriel] All right. Wait here.
[Jimena] Thanks.
Uh, so, Leo and I have been using these
to train Arete to use the intercom.
It hasn't worked that well.
But, uh, we can communicate through this.
Oh! [chuckles] Whoa!
-Hello Ah! It's cool.
-[Gabriel] Yeah.
-Super.
-[Jimena] Yeah.
-Okay, then. Only for serious matters.
-Only for serious matters.
Yes, exactly.
-Uh, I'm going to do lots of things.
-[Gabriel] Right, right.
-The speech. [chuckles]
-Yes.
-Thanks.
-[Gabriel] Sure.
[whimsical music playing]
Be careful!
I was just checking.
Right.
Listen, Roger, you promised
those ranches would be mine
before I left the mayor's office.
If you fail,
no way will I help your uncle.
Now hold on a minute, Diego, man.
Those ranches will be yours.
They are yours.
But one thing. My uncle
can't know anything about this,
let alone that the ranches
are your payment
for him becoming a senator, okay?
Now then, calm these bastards down.
You gotta shut them up somehow.
You gotta seize the ranches, okay?
I'll handle the ranchers.
Hmm.
[sighs]
[exhales]
[grunts, groans]
-Uff! [exhales]
-You okay?
What are you doing,
spying on me or something?
Calm down. I was just checking on you
'cause you haven't called me.
I want it to be clear
that I didn't ask you to do this, okay?
-Okay.
-Okay.
-Okay.
-Hmm.
[grunting]
-[Gabriel sighs]
-[Jimena] Okay.
Thanks, Gaby!
-You don't want me to help?
-Bye.
[whimsical music playing]
Gaby, could you please go to your room?
I'll call you when I'm done!
Okay.
[keypad clicking]
[line ringing]
[Brenda on phone] What?
Brenda, girl, please!
I'm desperate. Please call Gaby!
He literally won't leave my side.
I can't fart because
he's waiting outside the bathroom door.
[Brenda] Huh!?
Jime, I'm busy, for crying out loud.
I'll call you in three or four hours.
Uh, maybe five.
Bye. [chuckles]
[Mexican music playing]
Sof, you don't really suit that style.
It's a little bit too hippie.
It's special jewelry that you mortals
don't know how to appreciate.
[percussive music playing]
Oh my God, Sof!
This is a solitaire
with six platinum prongs.
[gasps]
Are they gonna get married?
Uh, why were you playing music?
Oh, well, I like playing a little music
to enjoy the wait.
Mm-hmm.
Here.
Well, did you hear something?
-Hear what?
-Oh, nothing.
[Gabriel sighs]
Well, all right, I did hear something.
So, the other day
I gave Martha's food to Arete.
Hmm, she couldn't finish it. Poor girl.
She was pooping all night
and, oh God, it stank!
Please stop talking.
[chuckles] It was just a fart. Let it go.
[both laugh]
-Ugh!
-That's what you need. Laugh a little.
-[laughs] Yeah.
-[Gabriel laughs]
-Come on.
-Uh What?
We're going somewhere. Just trust me.
Uh, where, Gaby?
-[sighs] Come on!
-Okay.
-And you're fine on your own?
-Yeah, of course.
Fine, come.
-Hurry!
-I'm coming!
[Gabriel laughs]
No, hold on a minute, Sof.
You have to know how
this is gonna affect us.
I bet their wedding will be in a cenote
with a shaman or something.
Cenotes are natural wells
that have existed since the ice age.
They're so cool!
Leo, I don't care
if they're ancient or brand spanking new.
In no time at all, you'll stop being
the youngest in the family,
and you, you'll soon stop being
the center of attention
because Mich will be
the most important woman in Dad's life.
Being the youngest is always the best.
I won't let them take it away!
Are you suggesting that
I would stop being Daddy's princess?
That's impossible, Santiago.
Relax. We just gotta
work this out together.
We can still stop this madness. Who's in?
[Leo] I'm always in.
Sofía?
[Santiago] We're gonna make
Mich's life miserable so she leaves.
Let's begin today's practice.
Alexa, play music.
-["Cumbia Chicucha" playing]
-[both giggle]
Uh, today's practice
will be all about intuition.
That's great, Lullis.
Keep dancing to the music. Ha.
That's it!
-All together, yeah!
-It looks like she's taken improv classes.
["Cumbia Chicucha" continues playing]
Uh, uh.
[Jimena laughs]
[both laugh]
-No?
-Huh!?
I might get hurt again.
I got you. Come on,
don't be stubborn with me.
That's it, come here.
[Jimena chuckles]
[chuckles]
Uh, oh, okay.
I'm I'm gonna grab some tequila
'cause they say that you dance
all night long with tequila.
Go on then.
[Jimena clears throat]
[music ends]
Cheers!
["Mírame A los Ojos" by OV7 playing]
-[grunts]
-Okay.
Hmm. Oh! I love that song!
Brenda and I know the dance.
-The microphone!
-[Gabriel] Ready?
[Jimena] Yeah, give it here!
[both singing in Spanish]
We gotta find her Achilles' heel.
Dad's gotta know who she really is,
so he doesn't marry her.
What if Mich is actually just cool?
[Sofía] Leo, she's a stepmom.
Have you ever watched a movie
with a good stepmother?
No, there are none.
Okay, but I'm hungry,
and if I'm hungry, I can't think straight.
I wanna pork sandwich.
You're a genius!
Cool!
[both singing in Spanish]
[in English] Swap, swap!
[continues singing in Spanish]
["Mírame A los Ojos" continues playing]
-[Jimena exclaims]
-[laughs]
Okay, what do you wanna eat, sweetie?
A pork sandwich
with all the trimmings, please.
Okay. Go take a seat.
Um, please could I get a pork sandwich
with all the trimmings?
Thanks.
Do you guys want anything?
-No.
-No. Thanks, I'm fine.
-[Santiago] Thanks.
-You sure?
-I'm sure.
-Yeah.
Heh, thanks.
-Well, now, we satisfy this craving.
-[Santiago] Ooh, yum!
Mmm.
Mmm.
["Oye Mi Amor" by Maná playing]
[both singing in Spanish]
[singing softly]
[music fades]
I'm I'm, uh [exhales]
tired.
[gentle music playing]
-You are?
-[both chuckle]
I can't believe you listen to that.
[both laugh]
So awful.
[both sigh]
-I haven't had this much fun in
-[Gabriel laughs]
-Man, it was a blast.
-Mm-hmm. It really was.
I gotta, um, work on my speech, so
-Okay.
-Bye. [chuckles]
Um, let me know if you need help.
[gentle music continues]
[birds chirping]
[gentle music continues]
-[radio beeps]
-[static buzz]
[radio beeps]
The finance agency can seize the ranches
if it hasn't been paid.
All of us present here today
have the receipts to prove
that we paid on time and in full.
And you more than anyone,
should be supporting us, Navarrete.
Obviously, being deceived
by people whose interests are unknown
must be very frustrating,
I do understand that.
But the fact is, we haven't
received any payment, Julio.
And the total debt is rising.
Now we are making you
a very generous offer
so that this gets resolved.
[Navarrete] If I were you, I'd accept it.
"A bird in the hand
is worth two in the bush."
[pensive music playing]
Good afternoon.
Am I on my own, or what?
[phone ringing]
[grunting]
[grunts]
[sighs]
-Hi, Dad.
-[Ernesto on phone] Hi, sweetie.
So how's your leg doing?
Do you think you'll be able
to handle that and the speech?
Yes, of course I can handle it
and much more. You know that.
Why don't you send it to me
and I'll look at it?
No, no, I'm sorry.
You'll listen to it with everyone else
because it's a surprise.
I don't feel comfortable with that.
Remember your pregnancy with Leo?
You found it really difficult
to focus on work.
This is an important event for us, honey.
Well, I'm not pregnant,
so there's no need to worry.
The speech is gonna be really good. Okay?
Wonderful. Bye.
[sighs]
[knocking on door]
You okay?
I'm fine!
[gentle music playing]
[exhales]
-Want me to help you out?
-Everything's perfect! Ahh!
Jimena!? Are you decent?
-[groans]
-[Gabriel] I'm coming in!
-[Jimena grunting]
-You okay?
I'm just gonna help you stand up.
I said I don't need help from anyone.
Okay? I'm sick of people not trusting me
and getting in my way!
Please, just go and leave me alone!
Because whenever you're here,
I just forget everything and I I
I can't think right, and I hate that!
-Right. Okay.
-Okay?
So just please leave me alone!
Okay.
[gentle music playing]
[sighs]
[sobbing]
Just in case.
-Fuck this! I don't need a man!
-[grunts]
I can do it on my own!
[sobbing]
[music fades]
[phone dinging]
LIAR! HYPOCRITE! WHAT A SHAME!
YOU DON'T REPRESENT ME!
Looks like someone's cheating to me.
I can't take it anymore.
Everyone thinks I'm a hypocrite!
Tell me what's going on.
One of the kids uploaded a video of me
with a pork sandwich earlier.
And now all of my followers
are attacking me.
You gotta put a stop to it, Joaquín.
Seriously.
[mischievous music playing]
[sighs]
Okay.
I guess I'll go.
-Mich.
-[Mich] No.
-Mich.
-[Mich] No.
Mich. [sighs]
-Mich.
-Dad, Mich is upset.
You don't say.
What happened, kids?
[groans]
[Julio] What is it, Orquídea?
I was so shocked. It's awful.
But you know what I think?
Those people are capable of worse.
-Look, they could even
-I ain't stoppin', okay?
What they're doing is criminal,
and we can't let it slide.
[somber music playing]
Julio,
they might do something worse.
Think about it.
You're a grandpa.
[breathes deeply]
[birds chirping]
[crickets chirping]
[sighs]
[groans] Ow!
[whimsical music playing]
[chuckles]
[TV playing indistinctly]
Dad?
Hey, Dad, what if we watch a match
with Ronaldo and have some nachos?
No thanks, Sofía.
He doesn't recognize us.
He's never been like this.
Not even when Barça lost eight to zero.
If this carries on, he'll start singing
those sad love songs again.
Oh no!
I think we crossed the line this time.
-Dad?
-Daddy!
Dad?
-[Sofía] Daddy?
-[phone ringing]
[ringing continues]
What's up, Santi?
Gaby, I screwed up.
We were playing in Dad's closet and
Well, we found an engagement ring.
They're getting married?
That's great news!
[Santiago] No, no, no! We made a plan
to stop it from happening, and Mich left.
Gaby, Dad's really sad.
I think we messed it up.
Look, sometimes we don't like the partner
of the person we love the best.
Like when my sister Chuy fell in love
with a guy my dad didn't like.
We made the poor guy's life a living hell
until he had no choice but to leave.
But that only made my sister
become really insufferable.
But one day, the guy returned.
And he spray-painted the side of our house
in huge tall letters, "I love you Chuy."
And that guy is my brother-in-law now,
Güicho, he's the coolest guy ever.
And my sister
is now the nicest person ever.
[radio beeps]
What I mean by all this is,
Mich may not be your favorite person,
but she's really good for your dad,
'cause when you fall in love, Santi,
you're the best version of yourself.
You're the best version of yourself.
Thank you. Bye.
[sighs]
[radio beeps]
Hello? You okay?
Hey.
Um, well, the truth is,
I overreacted yesterday,
and I treated you bad, real bad.
I'm sorry. That was wrong of me.
And I wanted to tell you
it was because of my dad.
-I've been under a lot of stress lately
-Huh? You're hurt real bad?
No, no, that's not what I said.
I just wanted to ask if you could
come with me to the office.
[radio beeps]
'Course I'll come with you.
I'll see you in the kitchen.
-[radio beeps]
-Over and out.
-[radio beeps]
-Over and out.
[Santiago] I'm sorry, Dad.
Me too.
[Santiago] We freaked out
when we saw the engagement ring,
and that's why we did what we did to her.
Okay. You guys really don't need
to freak out.
You guys
[sighs] You mean everything to me.
[sentimental music playing]
I bought that ring because
there was a super attractive discount.
-[Leo] Hmm.
-And for when the right time came along.
Yeah, but how do you know
when the time is right though?
Now seems like a good time.
You think now is the right time?
Yeah, you might have
strange taste, Dad, but
but when you're with Mich,
you're the best version of yourself.
[birds chirping]
-[Jimena sighs]
-Ready?
You're gonna do so well. You're amazing.
[gentle music playing]
-Shall we?
-Let's go.
Good luck!
[indistinct chatter]
We'll perform some breathing exercises.
With me now.
One, two, three, four
[inhales sharply]
You're clouding my aura.
I don't have one without you.
Will you marry me?
I LOVE YOU, MITCH
-Your turn!
-Will you forgive us, Mich?
My manny says that painting a sign
on a wall is more romantic,
but the truth is,
I was scared of doing graffiti.
[chuckles softly]
[sighs]
Baby,
you know that I don't believe in marriage,
but you mean the world to me.
I wanna be with you.
And I'm gonna keep this. It's super cute!
[group] Aw!
-[all applauding]
-[woman] Congrats.
-[Joaquín] Namaste to all of you.
-[group] Namaste.
But you need to know that
I don't want more children.
You guys are more than enough.
-No more siblings. You sure?
-No, no, no.
-No. We're fine like this.
-No, no.
I think we're fine, don't you?
-[Mich chuckles] Yes.
-[group] Aw.
[excited chatter]
In the last three years, the foundation
has received a tax exemption
for the Lemus Finance Agency
of 2,865,000 pesos.
-[all applauding]
-How nice.
[indistinct chatter]
[gentle music playing]
All of us need help in our lives
at some point. All of us.
And it's important that we learn
to give and receive.
Because that makes us better people.
It's ironic, right?
That getting help is so good for us,
but asking for it is so hard.
That's why it's so important to look up
so we can see we always have someone that
that protects you.
A solid support system.
The important thing here is
the person who, in a moment of compassion,
decides to lend somebody a hand
in order to help them,
and make their lives that much easier.
A person who is different to us
makes us question ourselves,
and they make us adapt,
out of love for new possibilities,
new directions,
so bit by bit, we become better.
Someone who thinks outside the box,
and is able to walk in my shoes,
and who'll give me a hand
so that I don't fall,
who'll put up with me
even when I lose my patience,
and who'll let me lean on them
so I can walk.
And that person has made me
the very best version of myself.
[clatters]
That's what the foundation is!
It's a space for solidarity
and for support.
That means we're able to become
the best versions of ourselves.
So, thank you for your donations,
thank you to all of our clients,
and thank you for being here.
[all applauding]
[indistinct chatter]
Well done!
[chuckles]
[Ernesto] Congratulations, honey.
-[Jimena] Thanks.
-'Course I knew you'd be brilliant.
Thanks so much.
-[all applauding]
-Thank you.
Good evening. Thanks.
Thanks.
