Heh! We just want to pay tribute to a professor, a scholar, a committed journalist, and a phenomenal woman.
Call me biased, but as far as I'm concerned, you are nothing but a blessing to this campus and community.
So as you say your good-byes to the school you've called home for over a decade, a few students want to pay tribute to you, Professor Patterson, and just share a small taste of the impact you've made on their lives.
I was an engineering student right up until the day I took Professor Patterson's intro to journalism class.
Last year, my politics blog won its first journalism award.
Thank you, Professor Patterson.
Your class changed my life.
She raised my awareness of the power structures against me but also of the power within me to challenge those structures.
She pushed me to be a better teacher, a more active listener, and a more rigorous thinker.
And I'm not a journalism major, I've never taken any of her classes.

, she reached out to me and my friends our first week on campus and made us feel at home.
There have been times over these last few months when my home life has been kind of confusing.

, she's always made me feel like family.
I'll always appreciate her for that.

What are you talking about? Sophomore year, my classmate Jada came to me.
She was pre-med and working at a medical facility.
She'd noticed they were charging their patients, most of them Black and poor, huge amounts for unnecessary procedures.
So I decided to write an article and expose them, but I needed evidence.
So Jada and I broke into the lab after-hours to get access to the billing records.
But before we could publish, the break-in was uncovered, Jada and I were arrested and charged with multiple felonies.
I was so scared I'd go to prison.
But the Bringston president at the time and the lab worked out a deal.
We bury the story and each take a semester off in exchange for them dropping the charges.
We took the deal.
That next semester, I came back, but Jada never finished school.
She had a rough go of it afterwards.
What happened to the lab, the racist charges? They eventually stopped the illegal billing, but all the people who had been preyed on up until then, they never found out or got any sort of reparations.
So, you see, on the video, I'm being lauded as this pillar of honesty and ethics and social justice when what I really am is a coward who sacrificed her principles to save her own ass.
I don't know.
Professor Patterson, I mean, just to go after a story like that at that young age, that's badass.
You broke the law so people wouldn't get hurt.
Most of us would have been too scared to risk it all like that.
Your entire career has been about helping people with their lives and making them better.
You're more than a mugshot, Professor Patterson.
I believe that you should be able to let go of the past and stand tall.
Auntie, I'm really sorry that you're going through this, but in all honesty, this is all the more reason why we need you at Bringston.
