Batman: Caped Crusader (2024) s01e09 Episode Script

Episode 9

[Harvey] Ladies and gentlemen,
the results are in.
The votes have been counted, and I am
humbled to stand before you tonight
- as the new mayor of Gotham City.
- [applause and cheers]
[triumphant music]
This is more than a campaign victory.
It is the first step towards building
a new Gotham for all of us.
A city of law and order and justice!
[crowd cheering]
Yes, yes!
- A new day is rising, and
- [woman] What's wrong with his face?
- And, uh, it it is a new dawn
- [crowd whispering]
for Gotham and uh
- [man] Look at him!
Because together
together we can build
[man 2] He looks like
some kind of monster.
- We can build a better
- [woman] Ugh, monster.
- a better a better
- [crowd murmuring]
[man] Monster.
[man's voice echoes]
I think I'm gonna be sick.
[gasps then pants]
[breathing slows]
[melancholy music]
[Mayor Jessop on TV]
Although he was recently my opponent,
I have always considered Harvey Dent
one of Gotham's finest public servants.
A truly great man, and a dear friend.
I wish him the speediest of recoveries.
Any comment on District Attorney Dent's
sudden resignation?
Only that I have every confidence
in our new acting district attorney,
Peter Mitchell.
So, Mitchell's the new DA.
Good for Pete.
[chuckles] He always was a smart,
dedicated, hardworking,
backstabbing little snake!
[growls]
He'll pay for this.
They're all gonna pay!
[show theme music]
Two weeks. Two weeks since
our district attorney was assaulted,
and you're telling me
that we still have nothing!
It is what it is, Commish.
Me and Flass worked
every one of our contacts.
No one knows nothin'.
And Dent himself, anything new there?
Spoke to him again yesterday.
He still can't remember a thing
from the attack.
[scoffs] Yeah, he forgot.
People don't get acid
thrown in their face for no reason.
Dent never had a problem
bending the rules, so,
who knows what else he could've been into?
Maybe he was on the take
and it caught up with him.
Or maybe he had enemies ‘cause
he sent a lotta dirtbags to the joint?
How ‘bout that, Montoya?
Dent was no angel, but he wasn't dirty.
Like you'd even notice.
- You're pushin' it, sister.
- That's enough.
I'm no fan of Dent either,
but we need answers.
The mayor's been raking me over the coals.
You'd think he'd wanna give whoever
did this the key to the freakin' city.
Turns out, his opponent being taken out
so close to the election
is just a little too convenient
for some people.
Especially the press.
Bottom line, the Dent case
is top priority. So, get on it.
[retching]
[knocking on door]
Not interested! Beat it!
- [groans]
- [knocking continues]
[sighs]
[melancholy music]
Bruce?
Get dressed, pal. I'm taking you out.
You've been cooped up too long.
Yeah, way too long, I'd say.
Come on, I got us a table at Utterson's.
No, I No.
- I don't think that's a
- It's exactly what you need.
You can't just hole up in here
with the curtains drawn,
like you've given up on life.
Come on, you're Harvey Dent.
You never quit on anything.
It's just not in your nature.
So, what do ya say?
You and me, on the town.
Like old times?
[Bruce] And then,
you turn to me and whisper
"Bruce, I think these may be
the wrong set of sisters."
That was the last time I ever let you
set us up on a blind double date!
Come on, Harvey.
You haven't even touched your food.
- This was a mistake.
- What? Why?
I can feel them staring.
These people are your friends.
I dragged you here
so you could see that.
Your life isn't over, Harvey, it's just
Harvey Dent. It's so good
to see you out and about again.
Uh, thanks, Sam.
Uh, nice to see you, too.
I bet that jerk's just eating this up.
He's always been a jealous little worm.
Um I'm sorry.
That just came out.
Hey, it's okay.
You've been through hell.
In fact, that's another reason
I brought you out.
I thought it might help you to talk about
the, uh, the incident with a friend.
The papers said you didn't
remember anything?
Uh yes.
Yeah, that's true.
[Bruce] But is that still the case?
What, uh, what do you mean?
You don't remember anything at all?
Well, look who's here. Harvey Dent.
Welcome back, old pal.
This place hasn't been
the same without you.
Oh, sure. Thanks.
That smug bastard.
I should cut that smarmy grin
right off his friggin' face.
Harvey?
Sorry. Um um
It's fine.
So the guy who attacked you,
you didn't see him?
Did he say anything to you or
[woman] What happened to his face?
[Bruce] Or can you think of anyone who
would want to do this to you?
[man whispering] Oh, God, look at him.
[Bruce] Maybe some convict
holding a grudge? Harvey?
Are you listening to me?
- Harvey?
- How are we doing over here?
Everything okay?
I think we're ready
for the check, actually.
[Harvey] Is everything okay? [laughs]
- [mocking] Is everything okay?
- Hey!
You think I don't know
what you're really asking?!
What you really wanna know? Here!
Why don't I show you?!
Harvey, stop.
- [patrons murmuring]
- [Harvey] This is what you want, isn't it?
Well, it's your lucky night, folks!
You've got front row seats
to the freak show!
[patrons gasping]
[quiet chattering]
That's right!
Take a good look, all of you!
What do you think, sweetheart?
Do I look okay?
No? Then go on, say it.
- Say it!
- [Bruce] Harvey!
[Harvey grunts]
Huh?
[dramatic music]
[thunder crashing]
[Batman] Dent's hiding something.
I could tell.
And was learning that worth it?
Worth what?
Mr. Dent is a broken man
in a fragile state.
And you pushed him to the edge.
Don't be ridiculous. I'm trying to catch
the men who did this to him.
I know that.
I'm simply suggesting
your tactics tonight were
Harvey Dent leaned on broken men
all the time in court.
He'd squeeze the small ones
to get to the big fish.
That's all I was doing.
Just spare a thought for the man,
Master Bruce.
Whatever he was, I don't
think that's who he is anymore.
Call me a monster.
The real monsters
are the ones who did this to me.
I don't deserve this any of this.
No, no
That's not that's not right.
I've done things, terrible things.
But didn't I I pay for my sins?
While Thorne and his boys
are out there, living the high life,
laughing it up.
Not for long. No, no. No, not for long.
[man] Help! Help!
Shut up, you old coot.
Just gimme the damn wallet
[both grunting]
[punches continue]
[thief groaning]
- You okay, mister?
- Yes, I'm [stammers]
Good. Now what do you think
we should do about this guy?
Do we leave him for the cops so they
can give him a slap on the wrist?
Or do we make our own justice?
Wait, but you can't mean
Tell you what, let's flip for it.
Heads, we hand him over
to the cops.
- Tails
- [gun cocks]
[whimpering]
- we don't.
- [man] Stop!
I'm not betting a man's life
on a coin flip.
[scoffs]
Yeah, maybe you're right.
But this animal
still needs to learn a lesson.
[thief] No, no!
[gunshot echoes]
I'm tellin' the truth, Montoya!
I swear to God.
So, you're just minding your own business
in the alley.
Not mugging some retiree
for their welfare check
like the last three times we busted you?
And some guy parks a bullet in your knee
just for kicks?
- That really your story, Benny?
- Yeah, but not just someone.
Some kind of freak!
This guy, like,
half his face was all, like,
melting off or somethin'
You can take him now.
I'm not lyin', Detective, I swear!
Did he just point the finger at Dent?
I know, it sounds crazy.
But maybe I should go check on him,
just in case.
Yeah, but let's keep it quiet.
If this was Harvey,
and word gets out before we're prepared,
things could go south in a hurry.
[suspenseful music]
Mr. Dent?
Harvey, are you home?
It's Detective Montoya.
I just wanted to see if you were
okay.
[sultry music playing inside]
- [doorbells jingle]
- [door creaks open, closes]
[Harvey] Emil Potter.
I know you?
[Harvey] I'm looking for a guy
who works for Boss Thorne.
Tony Zito.
I don't know any Zito.
Or Thorne, so
Hold the phone.
I know you.
You're that DA jerk.
Tried to send me up the river.
That's right, but I couldn't get
those charges to stick, could I?
And why was that?
[gasps, grunts]
- [groans]
- [all gasping]
[Harvey] Oh, yeah. Because Rupert Thorne
made my key witness skip town.
So, let's cut the crap.
- Where's Tony Zito?
- I don't know!
I swear!
Wait! No! I know, I know!
I mean, I know a broad Zito runs with.
Maggie. Maggie Cain.
See, Emil? That was easy.
[wood clatters]
[both laughing]
[grunts] Freak.
[sighs]
- [punches landing]
- [Emil screaming]
[glass shattering]
[announcer chattering]
Yes! Yes! Yes!
I told you, Dad.
They're goin' all the way this year!
Mr. Thorne, sorry to interrupt.
Tell me again why any of this is worth
interrupting quality time with my son?
Look, boss, suppose it is Dent.
We can't have some trigger-happy nut
with a score to settle runnin' around.
Jerry, Harvey Dent couldn't touch me
when he had every cop in the city
backing him up.
Besides, I have half a dozen
armed men here around the clock.
It's a fortress.
Now, if you don't mind,
the boy and I have money on this game.
[car phone rings]
What do you have, Pennyworth?
[Pennyworth on phone]
I've been monitoring the police radio.
There's a report of a man
matching Dent's description
who violently assaulted one Emil Potter.
Potter is one of Thorne's footmen.
An enforcer in the Narrows.
Yes, and if Harvey Dent is targeting
associates of Rupert Thorne,
- it's reasonable to assume
- Thorne was behind his attack.
And now, Harvey's out for revenge.
Just an hour or so
after your night out with him.
- You realize that?
- I needed answers.
Yes, so you said.
The situation's escalating
and you're wasting my time, Pennyworth!
[suspenseful music]
[knocking on door]
Yeah, yeah.
I'm looking for Tony Zito.
Well, he ain't here. So, scram.
[screams, gasps]
I'm so sorry.
I just really need to speak to Tony.
Well, you're outta luck.
Tony must've done something
real rotten this time.
Thorne's got him hiding
in some safe house somewhere.
Damn it!
Would you know where
I might find this safe house?
Suppose I did,
why would I tell you?
Oh, I'm sure I could come up
with a couple of reasons.
[suspenseful music]
- [gasps]
- Harvey Dent.
What did he want?
Well, look at that.
I got all the big guns. [laughs]
You know, being holed up
with you schnooks ain't half bad.
Enjoy it while it lasts, Zito.
This Dent business'll blow over soon,
and you'll be outta the hot-seat.
[scoffs] I shoulda gotten
a ticker-tape parade
for puttin' that big-mouth phony
in his place.
Wait. [sniffs]
You smell that?
Something's burning.
[music continues]
Stay put.
[coughing] What is this, some kind of
- [gunshot]
- [groans]
- [gunshot]
- [groans]
[anxious grunting]
[music continues]
[heavy breathing]
Hello, Tony.
[Batman] Going somewhere?
[gasps]
Don't.
- I'm not your first visitor tonight.
- [scoffs]
The last one was a real looker.
A mug like he lost a fight
with a motorboat.
He was after your boyfriend,
Tony Zito, wasn't he?
Ex-boyfriend now.
Ol' Gruesome gave me enough scratch
to leave this city for good,
after I told him where he could find Tony.
And where is that?
I don't want to kill you, Tony.
Really, I don't.
But I've found that sometimes,
what we want, or don't want,
isn't always compatible
with the greater good.
Dent, please.
I'm I'm sorry.
You know what, I believe you.
But just as much
as I'd like to give you another chance,
handing out second chances to people
like you just doesn't work.
Because you and all the others,
you aren't actually people.
You're cancer.
And everyone knows you don't
treat cancer with second chances.
You gotta cut it out right at the source.
Please, Dent, you don't have to do this.
I I'll pay you! Pl please!
[chuckles] Tony, Tony
Your money's no good here.
You can't imagine the amount of pain
and suffering you put me through
but you will.
Please! Don't, don't!
It was Boss Thorne!
He made me do it!
He made me do it! [crying]
Oh, I know, Tony, but you still did it.
And for the record
the other guy may not want to kill you,
but I sure as hell do.
[dramatic music]
[Tony screaming]
[engine starts]
Oh, God, I really did it.
I I killed them.
I killed them all.
- [thumping]
- What the hell?
[dramatic music continues]
[grunts]
[tires squealing]
[pipes clattering]
- [horn honking]
- [grunts]
[groaning]
[telephone rings]
Callin' with a friendly head's up.
Word is Dent completely cracked his nut.
Now he's gunnin' for you.
[chuckles] Oh, for God's sake.
Why is everyone so worried?
Because he just offed Tony Zito
and the guys you had with him.
And then he set the whole place on fire,
just to make sure they were all dead.
I was you, I'd be calling in
the reinforcements about now.
[line disconnects]
Easy, sir. You may have
a slight concussion.
You need to rest.
Not while Dent's on this rampage.
- But, sir
- If I did set Harvey on this path,
it's up to me to stop him.
[engine starts]
Jake, Tommy, you cover the back entrances.
You three, stick with me.
I wouldn't count on seeing
any action, champ.
Dent would never be
crazy enough to show up here.
And if that clown did try something,
you and me could take him on our own.
Oh, sure, we could.
We're set for now, and Ernie's crew
will be here any minute.
That's Ernie, now.
He isn't stopping.
Never mind me, get my son out of here!
All right you son of a
What the?
He's in the house! Spread out!
- [gunfire]
- [groans]
The balcony! Get him!
[dramatic music continues]
[men groaning]
- [piano keys jingle]
- [men shouting]
Dent, that you up there?
[Harvey] It ain't Santa Claus, Rupert.
What do you want, Harvey?
[Harvey] What I've always wanted: justice.
That's all I've got left, thanks to you.
No more courts
or campaign promises or red tape.
[punches landing]
- [man groans]
- [Harvey] Because, now,
I'm the judge, jury, and executioner.
Justice?
Is that what you call this?
Storming into my home.
Murdering a half dozen of my men.
Almost killing my son!
That doesn't sound
like justice to me, Dent.
- Sounds more like
- [Harvey] Revenge?
- [gun cocks]
- Yeah.
That too.
[Matthew] No!
- Matthew, don't!
- If you wanna kill my old man,
you're gonna have to go through me!
You are one brave kid
but I never could resist
a two-for-one special.
[dramatic music]
[Harvey and Batman grunting]
You should be thanking me!
[grunting continues]
I've done more for this city
in one night than
I'm trying to help you, Dent. Give up.
Harvey Dent never quits!
It's not in my nature!
[Batman grunts]
No! I had him. I had him!
Why did you stop me?! Why did you
[panting]
You stopped me.
Oh, thank God. You stopped me.
I couldn't control him.
You gotta lock me up.
Please please,
before he hurts anyone else.
[sobbing]
[dramatic music]
Your lawyer's here.
I don't have a lawyer.
