Escape from the Tower
Eisen: Trapped inside this Southern California skyscraper nearly 30 stories tall, three teams will attempt to break free by navigating their way through this vertical maze of stairways and security systems to find me and win "The Great Escape.
" My name is Matt.
My name is Michael.
We're friends! We are friends! We're playing a game to win it.
I'm not gonna be a happy loser.
We're not gonna lose $100,000.
That's right.
Get that out of your head.
Here's the secret.
Carol: My name is Carol.
Sally: My name is Sally.
And we are Twins.
Identical twins.
Identical twins.
Except I have blond hair.
When I win the money, I'm gonna finally start a college fund for my daughter.
If we win, I really want to surprise my husband and give him some of the money.
He runs an after-school program for kids with developmental disabilities.
I'm Sara, and this is Nick, my boyfriend.
We've been together for six years.
Not married, don't live together, which is a good thing.
We are coming on the show to win some money to do some stupid stuff go on trips and spend it on ridiculous things.
One of the biggest things for me that I'd like to do is take my grandfather to some places that he hasn't been and hasn't seen.
[ Voice breaking .]
He was the dad that I didn't have.
He chose to play dad to me when he didn't have to.
And he's made sacrifices in his life for me that I'll never be able to pay back.
Guards, remove their blindfolds.
Carol: When I first saw the green team, they looked a little imposing, but I thought, "they don't have the scrappiness that we have, rising almost 400 feet above this city.
You'll have to outsmart the high-tech traps, puzzles, and barriers within this building that are blocking your way to freedom.
You'll start in the detainment zone, in the galvanized metal air-duct system.
This map will guide you through four stages on your way to making your great escape.
At each stage, you'll have to overcome a challenge before you advance, and your final test is the transport zone.
Complete a challenge, and you'll find tools that will aid you in your escape, along with a piece of the great escape key.
The first team to make it to the transport zone and present me with the correctly assembled great escape key will unlock the box and will instantly become $100,000 richer.
Yeah! You may encounter patrolling guards who are on three designated routes and timed rotations.
If you're smart, you can plan your escape timing accordingly.
If you are caught, you will be taken back to the detainment zone, restrained again, and will have to make your way back out to the game.
Guards, lock them up.
Michael: It was bad enough being in this tight, little corner where you don't know what's going on, but then to be tied together it was just way too much.
Eisen: When the emergency system alarm sounds, the escape is on.
[ Alarm sounding .]

Is there something up there? You want that? We need something to cut these.
Well, they might be released they might be able to be released.
We just have to look.
I really wasn't focused on the map initially.
I was focused on whatever's gonna cut these shackles off of my feet.

Michael: I feel like my feet are the most important thing right at that moment.
That's when I was like, "okay, forget this map," and I just started dragging him by the feet through this thing.

We got to rip open the wall.

Blue team has escaped detainment zone.

Eisen: So far, the blue team has been the first to escape from the detainment zone and is heading toward stage 1, while the red team and the green team struggle to cut through their shackles.
There's nothing up there! Oh, my God.
How are we gonna get out of this thing? What are we gonna do? I don't know.
Just go backwards.

This is stage 1, the 29th floor balcony.
Here's the fun part.
Dangling over the edge of the balcony are three video camera stations sending a direct feed back to a monitor just like this one.
Using the pulleys, teams will maneuver the cameras, scanning each floor until they find one office with an l.

Once they have the code, they'll pull the camera up to the roof to retrieve a remote-control joystick and the first piece of the great escape key.
Both: It says, "look at monitor while pulling on camera rope.
" Michael: Camera rope? Oh! Oh, duh! "Locate illuminated l.

Our competitors need to remember guards are patrolling the tower on a regular rotation.
If caught, teams are gonna get in their cardio, because they're taken up to detainment, up as many flight of stairs as it takes.
[ Panting .]

It's got to be coming up.
We need the bottom of the camera.
We need the joystick.

Michael: He went that way.

Eisen: In stage 2, the teams will reach glass-sealed offices known as the clean rooms.
Using a joystick, they're gonna operate a high-tech robot to pick up a white case, which needs to be dropped into a locked security drawer.
In order to open that drawer, they'll have to use the code that they saw in stage 1.
And inside the box, they'll find infrared goggles and the second piece of the great escape key.
Matt: Come on.
Come on, robot.

Abmaize it oh, my God.
Oh, now don't get stuck.

[ Whirring .]

Eisen: The green team has fallen behind in stage 1, while the red team is racing down the stairs on their way to stage 2, where the blue team is trying to determine the guard's rotation while maneuvering their robot in the clean room.
[Bleep.]

Nicholas: We're looking for something that's there! There, there, there.
Both: "Clean room security drawer code.

We grabbed the case that was in there with goggles and a key.
I just was like, "whoa, we got a lead.
" Sally: So, we get into stage 2, and there is this robot that needs to be controlled.
I'll drive it, but I don't know where I'm going.
Can you see what I'm supposed to grab? Yeah.
I got it all, if you just listen to me.
There are some claws.
This is why we're looking together.
Yeah, there's claws on it, and they're open.

Now we have to figure out the pincer.

Sara: Well, we get to stage 2, and red team was right down the hall.
So that's the white case.

When the green team came in, I knew that the pressure was really on, that we couldn't let them pass us in this stage.
Good, Carol.

Do you see that white case? Yeah.
That's the case we need to get.
I'm starting to work this robot, which was not easy at all.
[ Panting .]

Uh-oh, I feel a second wind! We got to go to the 10th floor, dude.

" The 10th floor was creepy, because the map already said there was gonna be laser beams that we had to avoid.
[ Gasps .]
Look at this thing! What is it? There's like 50 billion of them! Eisen: If teams can successfully avoid the guards down 14 flights of stairs, they'll wind up here, at one of the more protected rooms in the entire tower the 10th floor laser vaults, and our stage 3.
In order to gain access to the vaults, teams must crawl under a series of strategically placed lasers around the entire floor.
And then our teams are gonna have to show off cat-like contortion ability through this web of lasers.
If they trip one of them [ Alarm chirps .]
the guards are going to find out.
[ Alarm sounds .]
Once they're through, teams must simultaneously press their thumbs on biometric scanners in order to deactivate the laser field, giving them access to a USB drive and the third piece of the great escape key.
Just grab princess di's jewels.
We've got to crawl through that? Yes! How? This is limbo.
Limbo! Wait! Wait a minute, Michael! [ Alarm sounding .]
Gah! [ Indistinct conversation .]
Blue team, stop! [Bleep.]
The blue team has been captured.
"Blue team, stop" is the most vile sentence I've ever heard in the English language.
And it wasn't "blue team, stop.
" It was "blue team, stop!" Hey! No, you're not! "Take white case.
Use stairs.
" I have to put it in the freaking box! Up here? Yeah, I don't know! Michael: You know, we still were pretty far ahead, so I was just like, "we're gonna still have a chance here.
" Why is this locking on me? "Controls are locked.

" All right, Carol.
We got to be very careful.
Shh, shh, shh, shh! Quiet! Quiet! Let's go! Matt, you've still got one around your leg.
Blue team has escaped detainment zone.

And so, they were just on some crazy goose chase.
Where's the door? We got to watch out for guards, 'cause I guarantee you this is where we're gonna probably get caught if we do not pay attention.
Do we move those lights? "Open white case, put on infrared goggles, locate code wall.
" Eisen: I'm standing in a pitch-black room containing a secret password that teams can only find using their infrared goggles.
This is stage 4, and it's only just the beginning.
Teams must scan each horizontal line, noting each letter or number sandwiched between two 9's.
Doing this will give them an alphanumeric code.
Next, they'll need to locate one of three I.
T.
Security rooms to access a computer file using their code and the USB drive that they found back in the laser vaults.
Doing so will reveal the location of a car key hidden somewhere inside of a Volvo s60.
They'll also discover a climbing clip and the fourth and final piece of the great escape key.
Babe, I can't see anything right now.
Nicholas: The common person doesn't walk around with night-vision goggles on their head every day at night, and obviously we're no different than that.
I got vision now, sort of.
Okay.

Oh, my God.
This is the worst part.

Sally: It's been a very physical game, and navigating that many flights of stairs was just taking its toll on both of us.

You'll start in the detainment zone, in the galvanized metal air-duct system.
This map will guide you through four stages on your way to making your great escape.
At each stage, you'll have to overcome a challenge before you advance, and your final test is the transport zone.
Complete a challenge, and you'll find tools that will aid you in your escape, along with a piece of the great escape key.
The first team to make it to the transport zone and present me with the correctly assembled great escape key will unlock the box and will instantly become $100,000 richer.
Yeah! You may encounter patrolling guards who are on three designated routes and timed rotations.
If you're smart, you can plan your escape timing accordingly.
If you are caught, you will be taken back to the detainment zone, restrained again, and will have to make your way back out to the game.

In order to gain access to the vaults, teams must crawl under a series of strategically placed lasers around the entire floor.
And then our teams are gonna have to show off cat-like contortion ability through this web of lasers.

Once they're through, teams must simultaneously press their thumbs on biometric scanners in order to deactivate the laser field, giving them access to a USB drive and the third piece of the great escape key.

This is stage 4, and it's only just the beginning.
Teams must scan each horizontal line, noting each letter or number sandwiched between two 9's.
Doing this will give them an alphanumeric code.
Next, they'll need to locate one of three I.
T.
Security rooms to access a computer file using their code and the USB drive that they found back in the laser vaults.
Doing so will reveal the location of a car key hidden somewhere inside of a Volvo s60.
They'll also discover a climbing clip and the fourth and final piece of the great escape key.

Nicholas: The common person doesn't walk around with night-vision goggles on their head every day at night, and obviously we're no different than that.

Nearby, they'll find one of three Volvo s60s, where two keys come into play.
One is the actual car key hidden inside or around the vehicle.
They'll have to remember the location revealed to them in stage 4.
Two, the great escape key, which reveals my location when they accurately assemble it.
They'll plug the location into the navigation system to find me.
The first one gets $100,000.
Sara: In the back of my mind, I thought red team had already gotten to the rappel zone.
Then I see the three volvos.
Babe, I think we're on our way to 100 grand! Don't jinx it! Nicholas: It's not over till that key's in that box.
There's so many things that could go on between now and then.
We just busted out of those doors.

My father left my family before I was born, and my mother's father came in and played dad.
