FBI: International (2021) s01e10 Episode Script

Close to the Sun

Doctors said we won't know anything for a couple more days.
Hang in there, buddy.
Eckersley and Dobbins duped over 100 women into sexually explicit videos.
One of the women committed suicide? Kayla Clancy.
Someone came to Prague to kill Eckersley and they also probably want to kill Dobbins.
Kayla's dad, Jim Clancy, he flew into Prague two days ago.
- He ever made any threats? - Not really.
It was his other daughter that did though.
Those men who are responsible for her death, they'll get theirs.
Ella, what's in the bag? Nothing.
Toss it behind those garbage cans now.
- Do you have a sister? - I did.
I think I'm going to take a couple days.
You gonna go home? No, I'm going to stay here in Prague, see the sights.
Jamie, is there anything you want to tell me? No.
Fuss.
Hey, looks like he's healing well.
Yeah, cone's off, bloodwork's decent, appetite's back, he's a trooper.
Ready for his Fitness For Duty exam? It's too early to tell.
Where's Vo? Oh, she's got that week long training in Paris with the GIGN.
Yeah, that's right.
Who is that? Someone named Agent Porter from the Office of Professional Responsibility.
Is there a problem? All I know is he had some questions regarding our recent case in Prague.
Is there something I should know? A Czech taxi driver recalls you and Miss Ella Clancy in his backseat.
Says he dropped you off at the bus station.
Is that standard procedure, splitting a cab with an alleged murder suspect in one of your cases? Well, she wasn't a suspect.
Her dad confessed to the crime.
I was giving her a ride.
You didn't think she could find her way to the Prague bus station all by herself? Her dad was going to prison for two years.
Her sister died by suicide six months before that.
I'm assuming you've heard of the Bureau's Victim Assistance Program? Maybe I need to remind you that we're obligated to help people impacted by crime? What was your history with Miss Clancy? There was none.
I met her on the job.
Did you assist her in covering up her part in the crimes? What? If you're complicit, I'll find out.
I think we're done here.
I think we're gonna finish this interview.
Not now we're not.
I read somewhere, your sister killed herself eight years ago.
My condolences on that.
I was just thinking, your history might've impacted you emotionally on this case.
I think you better leave before this gets a lot more uncomfortable for the both of us.
I'm gonna get my answers.
And if you've covered anything up, you'll be out of the bureau and on the streets so fast, it'll make your head spin.
I'm in Budapest all week.
Why don't we pick this back up after you've had a chance to collect your thoughts? - Is everything all right? - Peachy.
Northeast corner of Hampton and Castle.
Backup en route.
Medical assistance and HCP is requested.
One suspect still at large.
Believed to be armed and on foot.
- Hands in the air! - Stay where you are! Don't move! Aye, it's him.
There's a way we deal with cop killers.
Take him.
Filthy scum! So you got nothing to say? I'll only talk to Jamie Kellett, FBI.
Okay, uh-huh.
We're on it.
All right, listen up, we got a case.
A traffic stop in Belfast left two dead.
Brianna Quinn, constable, sustained multiple gunshot injuries.
Was killed in the line of duty.
Now, Quinn did manage to return fire leaving the shooter, Daniel Malloy, deceased at the scene.
Malloy had a history of mostly non-violent crimes.
It's a similar boat to his accomplice, Liam Walsh.
The police service in Northern Ireland are holding him as an accessory to murder.
They're pissed and they want answers.
I'm looking at this guy's rap sheet.
What's this gotta do with us? Liam asked for Kellett by name.
He's one of my informants.
Back during a stint in London, we flipped him as a bouncer at an underground club.
Turned out to be a front.
Since then, he's had his finger on the pulse of organized crime in the UK.
Remember when I said some sources are worth it? Well, Liam's worth it.
And since he's playing the informant card, the cops' hands are tied.
We're headed to Belfast to sort it out.
And one last thing, the pistol Danny used was a military issue Beretta M-9.
The serial number can be traced back to the National Guard base in the US.
I remember hearing about this theft.
A lot of guns disappeared.
Oh, if you're unsure how a DOD weapon resurfaces in Northern Ireland, it's worth looking into while you're there.
- You're not coming with us? - Unfortunately Brexit has muddied up Europol's reach inside the UK.
You will have to charm your way through Ireland without me.
All right, let's load up.
I want to be in the air in 20 minutes.
You're stepping into a real mess here.
The department's mourning one of its own.
My team is stirred up like hornets.
Our condolences for your loss, Chief.
The concern is having an American presence here - will slow us down.
- I can assure you that won't Jamie Kellett.
So you're the bastard's lifeline? Hey, easy.
This is Inspector Henry, Constable Quinn's partner.
He was present at the shooting last night.
- I'm so sorry for your - Save it.
You're here to protect your source.
And I'm saying to you right now, - you can't have him.
- Henry.
I'm the only one who saw Brianna die.
We should put that murdering scut in a hole.
Liam's not a killer.
Do you know that then? The guy's an asset, a productive joint source for the FBI and Scotland Yard.
We are going to hear him out.
Chief, if you're expecting me to take this bollocks lying down Finally.
It's good to see a friendly face around here.
I know how this looks.
Two dead bodies, one's a cop.
Even though your buddy's dead, the police here are out for blood.
Yours, Liam.
Hang on, it was Danny.
- I ain't kill anyone.
- Right, your friend, Danny.
- Why were you behind the wheel? - I was driving him home.
He was so drunk he couldn't see straight.
Okay, so walk us through it.
What exactly happened last night? Danny was in a good mood.
Rare to see him loosen his wallet, but last night he was buying rounds.
Something about a big job.
He's on the tear, so I take the keys.
I'm driving his car, and I guess I wasn't going fast enough.
We got stopped.
They smelled the beer.
They tried to get us out of the car.
And before I even knew what was happening, Danny pulls a gun.
- Just like that? - I swear on the cross.
Danny popped off a couple of rounds, but then he caught a bullet, and that was that.
That was that until you ran.
But there was blood everywhere and I'm no killer, so yeah, I ran.
Your pal used a stolen military weapon to kill a constable.
Where'd he get it? - Tip of the iceberg.
- What do you mean? You know about the Iron Corridor? He was smuggling firearms into Europe.
So Northern Ireland is the pit stop between the US and European black markets.
About 100 semi-automatic rifles are here in Belfast.
Grenades and anti-tank weapons too, but not for long.
I heard a deal is happening soon.
And I would love to know where you got this Intel.
I wasn't involved myself, but I was helping Danny with a few things.
What I do know, I'm willing to share for immunity.
Yeah, I couldn't sell that to a judge, even if he was your brother.
All right.
You told me this was a two-way gig.
Yeah? I mean, can't you see what you can do for me? Liam needs to believe I'm on his side.
He's our only connection to those guns.
Now for all we know, he's shining us on.
You don't know him like I do.
Remember that narco-trafficking bust a few years back? The McCarthy Syndicate, higher ups, enforcers all in cuffs? That was Liam.
Why is the OPR looking at you? A fishing expedition.
Okay, look, there are American military weapons on the shores of Europe.
Liam, I don't need you to trust him.
Just trust that I know what I'm doing.
Can you do that? Okay, so here's the deal.
If your cooperation helps us recover those stolen firearms and arrest those involved, we can help with reducing charges.
I can't be locked up.
People rely on me.
I got a wee one of my own now.
She's in Bangor with my ex.
Then do this right so you can see her again.
I will.
Yeah, whatever it takes.
The only reason he requested you people is 'cause your agent in there is soft.
And this clown, he knows he can work her.
Like I said before, we are all very sorry for the loss of your fellow officer, but insulting my team isn't going to help any.
Might actually anger someone, like me in particular.
Got a location for our guns.
Liam says they're modifying weapons at the stash house.
They'll become untraceable, fully automatic rifles.
All right, Armed Response, suit up.
Your source is an accessory to murder.
That's a life sentence around here.
Keeping these guns off the street is our main objective.
And proper justice for a cop killer.
There is a much bigger criminal enterprise in our crosshairs here.
We can't let it dry up with a street level guy like Liam.
We need the shot caller.
All right, you want to roll? Let's stop talking and move out.
Yeah.
Armed Response, I want you leading the way as soon as we throw open these doors.
Copy that.
What the hell? Did they know we were coming? Maybe they're sending a message? - Shots fired! Shots fired! - Everybody down! Take cover! The structure initially caught fire due to a timed incendiary device.
This was deliberate.
Someone's trying to cover their tracks.
- And destroying evidence.
- The guns were cleared out.
My guess is they split in a hurry and left ammo behind.
It cooked off in the fire.
A fire your informant led us straight into like a booby trap.
Well, Liam's stuck behind bars until we catch those guns.
I doubt he's trying to kill us.
And yet, here we are.
You took a swing at Liam.
I'd like a shot.
I need one more crack at him.
Just get the Belfast police off my back long enough to let me figure out what went wrong.
Hey.
Got something.
Yeah, this crew is always listening in on police scanners.
Nope.
The circle of need-to-know was deliberately small.
We kept the op off the scanners.
Did you keep it off your phones? This is Northern Ireland.
You think the cops aren't all up on your phones while you're in their jurisdiction? That widens the circle of need-to-know to include someone maybe on-the-take.
- That would be - Impolite, but not unheard of.
I did update Jaeger on my phone.
There you go.
Someone made sure the word got out and moved the guns.
And where do you suppose the guns are now? I'd tell you if I knew.
I swear on it.
So you got nothing left to sell.
We're the only ones standing between you and the Belfast police.
If you got no other cards to play, tell us now so we can quit wasting our time.
Okay, wait, wait.
This type of transaction takes planning, infrastructure.
You can't just snap your fingers - to speed up the timeline.
- Then where are the guns? Recovered from the fire.
The Starry Plough, it's an IRA symbol.
- IRA? - Aye.
Loyalists like to burn flags with this on it.
The police confirmed there's a place in town known for handing out those pins.
A pub called Rory's.
Danny's stepdad runs it, Patrick Ferrell.
- Mm.
- Oh, man.
He's a true believer.
That must be how Danny got involved.
I've been in contact with my colleagues at The Hague as well as the FBI Legats in Ankara and Kyiv.
They're monitoring chatter about any armed shipments originating out of Belfast.
We've a report of grenades, anti-tank weapons, and assault rifles stolen from the US military, enough to fill a container.
I'll bring port authority up to speed in each targeted country.
Thanks.
I was able to pull blueprints of Rory's Pub from city records.
Front entrance, bathrooms in the hall, a stock room, an office, and a back door for deliveries.
According to my Special Crimes Unit, Rory's is a bastion for those who still want a united Ireland.
It was established during the Troubles, giving the Irish Republican Army a base for all kinds of paramilitary operations.
So the guys in this place are battle tested.
And they don't like outsiders.
Now, this is Patrick Ferrell, stepdad of the shooter and the manager of the establishment.
Well, if we want to get a guy like him to talk, we're gonna need your source to walk in there with a wire.
Liam? He wouldn't spit to save a man on fire and you want to use him undercover? I have before.
I'd say this supply room is big enough to hold the weaponry.
Okay, so we put Liam in the front of the building to talk to the stepdad.
Meanwhile, Kellett goes to the back - and puts her eyes on that room.
- Works for me.
Great, we got a couple hours before it gets late enough to hit the bar.
In the meantime, I want to run something down.
Hi, we're looking for the ex-wife of Liam Walsh.
Yeah, that's me.
Is he - is everything okay? - He's fine.
Hello, little one.
She can be a little shy sometimes.
My niece is the same.
Can we come in? Uh, yeah.
Go on.
We divorced when Amelia was still in nappies.
He's a great co-parent.
I caught him turning over a penny on the sidewalk once.
Said it was bad side up and it could disappoint a kid.
Yeah, he's a good man at heart.
How long has he been working with the IRA? Since never.
If he had to choose between his family and the cause, which would win? Come here.
Come here.
Amelia would win.
He wouldn't want me to say that but that's what I think.
Would you bet your life on it? Yes.
You see the best in him.
He thought you did too.
He said he could count on you to show up.
Now that I met you, I wish that you hadn't.
Okay, so what was that really about? Well, she's obviously still very much in love with him.
Yeah, I agree.
I don't think they ever divorced.
I think that was for show to protect them from the IRA.
You think Liam's in deeper than he's admitting? Liam's always in deeper than he admits.
Case in point, Lauren and Amelia were getting ready to run.
Yeah, I did notice no coats on the rack, no shoes by the door.
Which means Liam was getting ready to run.
He's not a true believer.
He got into the IRA for money.
I'm guessing he wanted to take the profits from this last deal to bail and get his family somewhere they could actually be together.
That or he's leading us on to find a window of opportunity to escape.
Well, that's the question, and I'm hoping infiltrating this bar tonight will help us figure that out.
Kellett, you know he's lying to you and you're still going to put yourself in the line of fire next to him.
I want those guns off the street, Scott.
It's important to me.
So I'm gonna play it however I need to.
And Liam is going to be the last one to know what I'm really thinking.
You think Liam's getting messages out? How? Don't know yet, but keep an eye out.
Will do.
He's in here.
The rat chewed his way out of the cage.
Look, I know it's been a long day, okay? You may want to take some time, okay? - Have a shower.
- Here.
Put this on instead.
There's a camera in the buckle.
You're good at getting people to talk, just don't get too ambitious.
What's that supposed to mean? The bureau gives every source a codename to keep them anonymous on file.
Yours is Icarus.
You fly a little too close to the sun.
You Yanks have a sick sense of humor.
Remember, you were not involved in the shooting last night.
As far as anyone's concerned, you're a free man.
- Yeah, I know how it works.
- I know you do.
This is a slap in the face, Chief.
My partner deserved better.
You got that profiler look going.
What do you see? He's forcing that emotion.
He's hiding something.
Swear to me you'll do right by her.
Did anyone do a camera sweep at the scene of the shooting? Uh, yeah.
They found nothing, except it was signed for by Henry.
Go back to the crime scene and grid search for cameras.
What can I do for you? Your fleet's dashboard cams.
Are those videos archived somewhere? Straight to the cloud for 24 hours, assuming there's been no incident.
I'm gonna need whatever you got from last night.
Right.
You good? I been doing the maths.
If things escalate in there, odds are I'm the one getting knifed.
I think you were right about me, flying too close to the sun and all.
I know priorities change when you have a family to worry about.
Yeah, why do you think I'm doing all this? I got your back, and if anything gets shady, remember my friend, Mary.
I should've never gotten in that car to drive Danny home.
But you did, and now we're here.
So let's do this.
Let's get these guns off the street and save lives.
- We good? - Aye.
Okay, I'm heading around back.
If anything pops off, you're in my ear.
Aye.
What the hell are you doing here, Liam? I need a word.
It's important.
If it's about Danny I heard.
Were you with him? I can explain.
Go on then.
I'm looking for my friend, an American, her name is Mary.
She was visiting Dunmurry.
No one's seen her in two days.
- Including me.
- I have a photo.
I'm just trying to track her down.
What the hell are you doing? I told you the jacks are around the corner.
She's with me.
My cousin's roommate from the States.
Pardon if she lacks manners.
Now please put the gun down, mate.
You're making us nervous.
Get this miserable pox out of here.
Everything he touches winds up behind bars or buried.
I'd say you've overstayed your welcome.
Got it.
Yeah, we're pissing off now.
I got you.
I got the footage of the shooting.
Inspector Henry's been lying to us about how the shooting went down.
How am I just hearing about this now? I wasn't sure when You can take all the classes in the world, and you can hit the gun range every weekend for years, but until real bullets are flying at you, you don't know how you're gonna react.
Now you do, and that explains why you've been coming at us since we showed up.
Oh, he may be a coward, but more importantly, he's the one who got his partner killed.
- Liar.
- I'll play it again.
- Watch.
- You can see You recognized who was in that car and froze up.
See it? That little jump? Your partner, Brianna, saw it, and she recognized it as danger.
She pulled her weapon.
The passenger pulled his.
Gunfire was exchanged, and you ran and hid.
Oh, my God.
Looks like you were scared these two would expose you.
Now, you see that behavior, I believe, is phony outrage that's allowed you to try to get to Liam every chance you had.
That, I never quite bought.
It all makes sense now.
You made yourself available to Liam to pass along messages.
Who'd you recognize, huh? Danny or Liam? - Does she know? - She does.
She got the message.
The plan's a go.
For a second there I thought Good, that's gonna make it easier for me to ask you what I'm going to ask you.
Did you get something in there? Got a name from Danny's stepdad, some guy who has a farmhouse about an hour from here.
Word is that's where the guns are.
Liam, that's huge.
Yeah, but I'm afraid if the copper's tipped him off again.
You want me to cut them out? You can pull some strings, yeah? Just the two of us go out there and have a conversation, flash your badge.
- We don't need that lot.
- And then what, Liam? And then I'm out of the whole game.
I don't want this life anymore.
Just being a means to an end, always looking over my shoulder.
The only difference between me getting killed and Danny was a couple of pints.
That's no way to live.
You think you can get away with betraying this gang - and keep walking the streets? - With you help, aye.
Together.
Jamie, we're a team.
Look, all I'm asking is for you to keep me safe one more time, and I'll help you.
Okay.
Give me a moment, this isn't going to be easy.
Liam is still our best chance at finding those guns.
He's full of it, can't you see that? He's always dangling a new carrot.
Jamie, you know me.
You belong to us.
Chief, these stolen firearms are American property.
There are people way higher up than you and me that are gonna want answers from both our governments.
I'd hate for you to have to explain that you impeded the investigation.
- Are you threatening me? - It is what it is.
He's your informant.
You're on your own.
I knew you could do it.
Liam, this is your last chance.
If this tip doesn't pan out, I can't help you anymore.
I know, and I'm grateful for it.
How's it going? Well, Liam was right about one thing.
The Belfast police are on our phones, - which gives us a front seat.
- Got it.
I reckon I could take on a bobcat and win if I had preparation.
What if the bobcat has preparation too? Then no.
Turn left up here.
We're getting into the boondocks.
I did tell you it was a farmhouse.
Fair enough.
You're doing that thing with the knee.
You do that when you get nervous.
Sorry, I'll stop.
You know, ever since I got here something's been bothering me.
I can't quite figure it out.
- I've been thinking - Bad for your health, that.
Sometimes it helps me to go back to the very beginning.
For example, why choose Northern Ireland to run the guns? Why here? Turn left up here.
And then it occurred to me, it's because the IRA already had well-established routes through here.
Easy enough to repurpose the people and stash houses.
Sure.
Yeah, why not? Makes sense.
And here's where I got a little confused.
The IRA had its way of doing things, rules.
Has, if you listen to some.
- Is that true? - Oh, very.
They used to have military tribunals, official executions.
Your girl, she's done her reading.
Again with the knee.
Sure, I'm nervous.
I'm taking you to betray my own, you know? - It's a big deal like you said.
- It is a big deal.
- So is shooting a cop.
- Ah, don't I know it.
In fact, on the scale of screw ups, I'd say it sits somewhere between epic and colossal.
Are you trying to butter me up over here? A man has his pride.
The IRA was known for making examples of screw ups, and if you're working their old lines with the same people, old habits die hard.
I feel like you're warming to a point.
But you wanted back out on the street.
You wanted back in that bar.
You weren't worried about retribution.
Well, I wasn't responsible.
But as a man who overserved Danny that night, I'm guessing you figured his stepfather was.
And I'm guessing that's why we had to stop off there, so you could tell him how you could clear his debt.
That's a leap.
We got out of that bar way too easy, Liam, and you know it.
The only way that whole scenario makes any kind of sense is if you're the boss, Liam.
You're the shot caller, aren't you? What are you doing? And I'm guessing what you told Danny's stepfather to do probably had something to do with getting rid of an FBI agent you were leading straight to them.
That was his plan all along.
Ambush her and run off.
Brutal but simple.
Look, nothing's actually happened yet.
You don't have the guns yet.
We can still My hunch was confirmed when your wife and daughter called an Uber to the airport.
My colleagues picked them up instead.
They've been following us.
Why would you do this? We were a team.
And I'm guessing, just in case I couldn't get away, in case I had to bring someone else along with me, the instructions for whoever is waiting for us at that farmhouse ambush were to just shoot anyone but you.
And the only phone you have to call ahead and protect your family is one you told me the cops were "up on".
Which means that if you were to call your crew, that would make the recording of that call a legal confession, fully admissible in court.
Amelia! Daddy.
She really is beautiful, Liam.
Agent Kellett, what's going on? You said you'd bet your lives on Liam choosing his family over his cause.
I'm taking you up on it.
You said it was a left up here? Liam, please just tell me what's happening.
If we're going to make a deal then we're safe pulling up, right? No problem? But if I'm right, if you're setting me up, the thought really pisses me off, by the way.
You're bluffing.
You wouldn't.
Daddy, I'm scared.
I guess I owe you an apology, Liam.
Stop the car! Abort the mission, mate, abort.
The cops are on to you.
Save yourselves.
Daddy loves you.
Officer Henry sold you out.
We've had everyone in custody for probably an hour now.
Your family was never in danger, but they did get to witness you making the right call.
There's a car waiting for you right over there.
They're gonna take you home.
You set my husband up.
Letting me go home without him won't stop me hating you.
I know.
- Liam, it's time.
- Wait.
Come on, darling.
You know, that's how you fooled me at first.
How I didn't see it right away.
At the end of the day, you just don't have enough killer instinct.
You know, losing one of our own was horrible enough.
I didn't realize I'd end this day by losing another.
Well, you brought Brianna Quinn justice today.
That's something to be proud of.
Is everything all right? Agent Porter at OPR, he wants to talk again - when we get back to Budapest.
- Okay.
We should get moving.
Jamie.
Do you have anything you're worried about with what happened in Prague? Maybe.
Just a reminder before I start recording, the truth always comes out in these things.
It's better to be honest sooner rather than later.
Funny, I just gave that same advice to an informant on the case we were working.
Great.
Then we're in agreement.
I was hoping to speak to Agent Kellett one-on-one.
Well, whatever you have to say to her, you can say to me.
She's a direct subordinate, this is my team.
Then I'll cut to the chase.
City camera captured this near the bridge.
It looks like you, Agent Kellett.
Uh, a grainy photo taken at night? I can see why you might think that.
Obviously, if there's any indication that evidence in Prague was concealed, we're not just talking dismissal from the bureau, - we're talking felony charges.
- This is ridiculous.
We just closed a case had it not been for Agent Kellett.
Illegal weapons would've been disseminated throughout Europe, and you're busting her chops over a bad photo.
If it is her in the photo, it puts her in the vicinity and time frame of our gun drop.
Well, you're out of luck there because that can't be her on the bridge.
She was with me that night.
Is that a fact? I'm looking at the time stamp.
I can confirm that we were together.
It was late, Agent Forrester.
In what capacity were the two of you together? Of two colleagues who had just completed a very rough case.
Well, this is illuminating.
I didn't need you to do that.
Who cares if he knows we had more than a drink.
Half the FBI agents I reported to coming up were married to other FBI agents.
Not the point.
You shouldn't have to answer for my actions.
I'll take a bullet for you if I have to.
And I'm saying I'd never let you.
He's just fishing, Jamie.
What if the OPR and the DOJ start looking into us? We can't give them a reason to say that you're emotionally compromised.
What are you what are you saying? I don't like being on anyone's radar.
Maybe the two of us should take some time apart.
Jamie, you are trying to fix something that isn't broken.
This team is really starting to do good work.
That Northern Ireland case, that was great work.
- Am I missing something here? - No.
We just need to play this right, and that in there, it didn't feel right.
I can't be the person to drag you or anyone else down with me.
So what, you want a break? I think it's for the best.
