Life is Wild s01e10 Episode Script
Rescue me
1 Life Is Wild: The midterm will be worth 50% of your final grade.
This is the test.
You must have picked it up when you dropped the honor codes on his desk.
None of us have looked at it, so technically we haven't cheated.
Why don't we just throw it away? As much as I'm enjoying this, can we save it for after the test? I'm gonna go get some pizza.
The test.
What do you think? Nice.
Nice? Th-They need to be perfect.
Baby, all the flowers in South Africa aren't going to turn this place into the St.
Regis, and knowing your friend Charlotte, that's what she expects.
Well, I found 400-thread count sheets in Jo-burg.
I figure we can have them when she leaves.
Fantastic.
Maybe I should pop into town and see if they have any tiaras on sale.
Danny, will you please try to be nice to her? Why do you always knock yourself out so much trying to impress her? Because she is my best friend and I am very excited to show her my new life.
Our new life.
I know she calls me Dr.
Dolittle behind my back.
She does not.
It's meant lovingly.
Thank you for ruining my weekend.
How is it my fault that you have to go to a mandatory class trip? Because before you were around, I would have just conveniently forgotten to tell anyone about it.
Camping in the wild? Jesse, that sounds like fun.
Camping out in the habitat of the black mamba? You're right-- sounds like a rockin' time.
Snakes only bother you if you bother them.
Right, Dad? Honey, you'll be with trained counselors.
You'll be perfectly safe.
Don't worry.
See? I'm not worried.
I mean, what could happen? I'm here! Oh, my gosh, she's here.
I'm here! The circus is in town.
All three rings.
Oh, do you mind bringing up my bags to my bedroom? Thank you so much; this is for you.
And I need my shoes shined.
Uh, Charlotte, this is Art-- Oh, and I'm treating you like a bellhop.
Why didn't you introduce yourself on the ride from the airport? I did.
Oh, sorry.
Jesse! Look how much you've grown in a few months.
And Katie.
You're so gorgeous and luminous.
Hi, Charlotte.
Oh.
Oh, bye, Charlotte.
No, where are you guys going? Oh, to get eaten by wild animals.
No, it doesn't work.
You don't scare me.
Oh, but I think I just did.
You know what, Jesse? Oh, duck.
Clever comeback flying in.
I'm glad to see some things never change.
They never do.
Mia, Chase.
You two are a sight for jet-lagged eyes.
Jo, your children are playing with a lion cub.
Uh, that's Toothbrush.
He's mine.
Oh.
Toothbrush.
He's yours.
That's, that's okay.
Oh, I got some presents for you two.
Thank you.
Oh, could you hold this? Thank you.
All right.
Uh, for you.
No need to thank me.
And for you, young lady.
Here you are.
Oh, and this is Puff-Puff.
Come here, baby.
Oh, Puff-Puff.
You hungry, honey? Huh? Does Puff-Puff need to go tee-tee? Jo, do you have any dog food? Uh do uh I think your dog is food.
Oh! That cat needs to go back to the wild.
Okay, guys.
Listen up, please.
Settle down, please.
Thank you.
Okay, I'm Matt.
Welcome to Bush Survival Weekend.
The purpose of this trip is to see what you guys are made of, to test yourselves against nature, and to learn how to work and bond as a team.
You're the only one I'm interested in bonding with.
That's so sweet, but it's not going to get you in my sleeping bag.
The closest I've come to surviving in the wild is being chased down Broadway by a Yorkshire terrier.
Didn't you ever go to camp? Yeah, Camp Minnehaha in Long Island.
It's not exactly the African Bush.
Well, don't worry.
You're in good hands.
Okay, guys, first things first.
Check your gear.
Look, you, uh you do trust me, don't you? ???????????want to.
This is about the whole cheating on the test thing, isn't it? Look, I know it was wrong.
Can we just get past this? I'm trying.
Did you know this area is called the Cradle of Humankind? Where they say man took his first steps.
So you're saying it's a good place to start over? Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying.
All done, all done, all done.
So I'm looking for some volunteers to help distribute supplies.
How about you? Me? Yeah, no.
Oh, you have better things to do? Uh, yeah, I'm actually pitching for the Mets next weekend, so I figured I'd save my arm.
I see we have a real rebel in our midst.
Whatever you say, Ranger Rick.
Clever.
That's funny.
Hey, why are you provoking that guy? Because I don't want to be here.
Camping under the stars, just you and me? And all these happy hikers singing around the campfire.
Look, if it were just you and me, that'd be great.
But all this? It's not me.
This is gorgeous, Char.
And my La Mer eye cream.
Thank you so much.
Look at all this.
It's too much.
Yeah, well, yeah, try on tri ???????????// Oh, my gosh,?????????????? ??, do you rranatoormatimeligthat we said you so you could get in?li He was cute.
And dumb.
Yeah.
Hey, did you hear that Lisa got caught embezzling from the firm? No way.
Mm-hmm.
Yes, very awkward.
What else did I miss? Okay.
well, yoed our annual birthday bash.
You missed the New York Marathon that we spent two years training for.
You ran the marathon? No, but I watched it on television with my running shoes on.
So, Jo Hmm? How is Dr.
Dtle? He knows that you call him that.
I know, that's what makes it so much fun.
You're such a brat.
I love this song.
Whoo! Could you turn the music down, please? Some people are trying to take naps, for God's sake.
Oh.
I'm sorry, Art.
Um Art, this whole, uh, Indiana Jones thing you got going on? It'sfoy fad.
ion rwar It works for you in, you know, in a retro kind of way.
Maybe it'll catch on.
I just the music, okay? Oh, that man is screaming for a makeover.
I know.
Each group will have a leader who will pick three other members to make a team.
Now, you will use all the survival skills that you have learned to find your way, using a map and a compass, from here to a pickup site.
Now, you will have to make camp overnight, plus find water along the way.
Now, stay together at all times and you must stay on the trail.
These maps over here behind me, they are very specific and easy to read, but just as safety measure, one of these counselors will accompany each group.
This is just in case of an emergency.
Oh, hey.
What you doing,Rebel? Well, there, Ranger Rick, I was just listening to Timbaland.
Why don't you tell me what I just said about teamwork? Uh that, uh, teams should work as a team.
A team is only as strong as its weakest link.
Now, you must be one of those guys that thinks he doesn't need anybody.
Gee, you're good.
That's a very dangerous attitude to have in the wild.
Yeah, I wouldn't know.
You know what? I'm gonna let you off the hook.
You can go home.
Go wait by the truck.
Fantastic.
Well, guys, Ranger Rick and I, we finally agree on something.
You all have a good time.
Be safe.
Don't get lost.
I'll see you tomorrow.
Catch.
Sleeping bag, sleeping pad, water bottle.
You are taking this seriously.
Yeah, girl from New York, remember? I'm not necessarily one with the animals, especially that of the carnivorous variety.
Well, since I've been appointed team leader, please be on my team.
Hey, Tumelo.
Sign me up.
You know, I just can't believe your brother got himself sent home.
Yeah, in under an hour, too, shattering his previous record.
Hi, I see you've got your team together.
Great.
I'll be your counselor Hilary.
So, everything ready? Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
OLIVER We should go.
Okay, guys.
Grab your backpas d meete er at the zipline.
I'm gonna send you guys off in style with a little exercise designed to build your courage and survival skills.
??????????with me.
What's a zipline? I've got you, you can trust me.
I'm right here, okay? Come on,Katie, you can do it! You can do????????/ one two, three.
Come on! Yeah! Oh, my God! gnetic north is that way.
Why do you need a compass when we have a map? I don't get it.
I'm wearing ugly shoes and still my feet hurt.
I hate the outdoors! We'll take a break in another kilometer.
Or now.
What you mean down by the lake? Last one in.
Oh, no, that is off the trail.
Come on.
Does it really matter? We're supposed to stay on the trail.
On a schedule, map.
We're ahead of schedule and we can see the trail from there, right, Hilary? You guys are in charge, but don't go into the water.
Look, I'll be up on that rock.
I need to check in, but there's no signal down here.
Great.
What do you think? Rule number one: stay together at all times.
Hey, guys.
Listen,Art and I had a talk, and we both think it's time for Toothbrush to go home.
He is home.
Sweetie, remember how we always talked about Toothbrush can only stay with us until he was ready to go back to the wild? But he's happy here.
But he's big.
Look at him.
He belongs out there, not here.
And unfortunately, he was really aggressive with Puff-Puff.
It was his fault.
Yeah, I mean, what kind of a name is Puff-Puff? Guys.
I know this is tough, but I want you to both think about what's best for Toothbrush, okay? He'll be on Blue Antelope land.
We can keep an eye on him and he'll be fine.
Look at him.
I promise.
On your feet.
We've got to pack up everything from the campground and load it onto this truck here.
We're moving to the pickup spot.
You know, I thought you were taking me home.
Yeah.
Right after you tear down that tent.
You're kidding.
It's your only way out of here.
Woo! Woo! Okay, so let's play the kissing game.
I love that game.
Who knew that game had universal appeal.
All right, I'm going first.
Tumelo, who would you rather kiss: Gisele the supermodel, or Mrs.
Ellis the lunch lady for 100,000 rand? The lunch lady's got that moustache and a little goiter on her neck.
That's the point.
Wow, this is so amazing.
I just can't believe that you did all this.
You ould have saw it when we got here.
No, actually, you wouldn't have wanted to.
So to answer your question, I've just been doing everything from juggling marketing for the Blue Antelope to helping care for a stable full of wild animals.
This can't be the same woman who up until a year ago refused to get a dog because of her unnatural attachment to her Oriental carpets? Yeah, I guess I've changed.
Mmm.
What? I have to go check in with my office.
Okay.
I'll see you at dinner? Okay.
Can't wait.
Come on, Puff-Puff.
Having fun? Didn't realize how much I missed her.
Reminiscing about New York, gossiping about anyone who doesn't happen to be in the room.
I'll never understand you two.
You're so different.
How so? ??????//Come on.
You're so normal.
She's so Bold? Free-spirited.
Ding-dong.
Charlotte's been a good friend to me.
She's seen me through some pretty rough times, my divorce being one of them.
Miss it? Miss what? All of it.
New York.
Charlotte.
Your brilliant legal career.
Wearing clothes that require dry cleaning.
Everything that is important to me is right here.
Uh, look, it's a no-brainer.
Miss Ellis.
Ah! A hundred thousand rand is a lot of money Yeah, but you'd have to use it for therapy to get over the experience.
Uh-huh.
Katie, whoould you rather kiss: George the bus driver after he's had a lot of garlic, or a warthog? Describe the warthog.
Yeah.
????????/l t,Alrigh Oliver,Yeah.
who would you rather kiss: Scarlett Johansson or Keira K ??? ghtl.
Neither.
No, come on.
It's a game.
You have to answer.
You're going to have to kill me then, 'cause there's only one girl on this planet I want to kiss.
Oliver! Oliver, Oliver, get out! Oliver! Oliver, get out of the water now! Oliver, get out of the water now! Just get out the water! Oliver, get out now! Come on! Get out! Get out! Come on, Oliver! Go! Swimswim! Back, back, back, back.
Whoa! Back.
This is not Disneyland, is that clear? When I say not to do something, you need to listen.
Tumelo, you're the leader.
So lead.
You're right.
I'm, I'm sorry.
It really wasn't his fault.
Oh, jeez, look I'm sorry, okay? Matt, Matt, come in.
Matt, come in, please.
The radio's trashed.
Which means we're on our own.
So no more fooling around.
You got it? where am I supposed to sit? I'll be back as soon as I unload at the pickup area.
Well, how long is that going to be? Not too long.
So you're just gonna leave me stranded here in the middle of the African bush? Yeah.
I thought rebels liked to be alone.
You know that whole "island unto yourself" thing.
But if you're afraid All right.
I'm not afraid.
I suppose I could make some space and you just have to ask.
I'm not afraid.
Okay.
Listen, if you do get scared, try singing it really helps.
'Cause I find that when you sing, you're never really alone.
Wait, wait! Hey, my pack! Hey! Doesn't she look amazing? Oh, what this old thing? Oh, honey, I had to ask you this, but Septic tank? Well, you have the magic touch.
I'm on it.
Mm, backed-up toilets, and cleaning rooms? Yeah.
Not all glitz and glamour around here.
Sometimes you got to a shovel a little elephant dung.
Glad to see that Jo's seven years of higher education are really paying off.
Jo makes her own decisions.
Always has.
You should know that better than anyone.
I just want her to be happy, Danny.
Me, too, Charlotte.
You know, she's been cooking all week to make you this special South African barbecue, it'll mean a lot to her if you enjoy it, because for some reason your opinion still matters highly around here.
Well, Danny, you have to understand the Jo that I knew, see, she didn't cook.
She was happiest doing her lawyer thing until 9:00, and she got a Ph.
D.
in ordering take-out.
Well, now her boerewors is mouthwatering, and she makes the best melktert in the region.
Okay.
Boerewors.
Mmm.
Yummy! This is it.
Let's make camp here.
Ah, thank God.
'Cause my feet are killing me.
Not so fast.
You're on cooking duty.
And, uh, Katie, you can help me put up the tents.
And, Oliver, you know how to make a fire, don't you? You just rub two sticks together and, uh, and blow.
Sure thing, boss.
So, planning on cooking us a buffalo? Okay, Katie, most embarrassing moment? I don't know.
Oh -No, I can't.
-Oh, come on.
-Oh, I really can't.
-Tell us already.
Okay.
I was in fifth grade, and it was Valentine's Day.
And I had the biggest crush on Bobby Bailey.
And he walked up to school, and he handed me this big box of chocolates, and I got so excited, I gave him this big kiss.
And then he wiped off his cheek and asked if I could give the box of chocolates to Melissa Ruben Oh, no.
who was home sick that day.
That was your most embarrassing moment? Yeah.
I still haven't gotten over it.
You give me his address, and I'll have him disappear, okay? -Thank you.
-Yeah.
All right, Oliver, most embarrassing moment.
Uh, I don't have one.
Ah, please, come on.
I don't get embarrassed.
Okay, let me think of one.
The time Lauren walked in on you kissing one of the guests at the hotel? And then she threw her drink at me, and missed, and hit the,uh, other girl.
Were were you and Lauren dating at that point? Well, it's, um, ancient history now.
But you cheated on her.
Well, technically, we were on a break.
You know, we should, uh, play a different game.
Yeah.
It's just me.
Are you out of your mind?! I'm sorry.
You weren't scared, were you? No.
But where the hell were you? You sure you weren't scared? 'Cause Wait, you were here the whole time? You're sick.
Let's just go to the pickup point and get some dinner.
You're never going to bring me home, are you? Well, your parents did pay for a survival weekend.
Good night, guys.
Good night.
Look, Katie, Lauren wasn't you.
That whole thing was a mess from the start.
You and I, we're completely different.
Yeah we are, aren't we? I think a little time away from civilization is exactly what we needed.
What's wrong? Um, nothing.
I'm tired.
We'll talk in the morning, okay? Come on, catch fire already.
Good morning.
You're up early.
You brought a lighter.
Oh, great, here we go again.
Oliver screwed up.
Yeah, actually, you really did.
Did you ever think that maybe your standardsare impossible to live up to? I'm sorry I'm not perfect.
I'm not asking you to be perfect, Oliver.
Then what do you want from me? I really don't know anymore.
Well, you get back to me when you figure it out.
I'm sick of this.
Oh, you're just going to walk away? Oliver, you can't go out there alone.
He'll be perfectly safe on the reserve.
He'll have a lot of friends out here.
Okay, kids, time to say good-bye.
You couldn't have gotten them a normal pet, like a dog? They raised Toothbrush.
You can see why they're disappointed.
Well, life is full of disappointments.
Oh, come here.
I'm sorry.
It's going to be okay.
Oliver! Oliver?! Oliver! Oliver! Where is he? Maybe we should get Hilary.
No.
Are you okay? Yeah, yeah, I think so.
Help! We're down here! Hello! Help! What do you mean, they're not here? They must have gone off looking for you.
I came straight back.
Katie! Katie! Tumelo! -I'm going to go look for them.
-No way.
We stay together, here.
I mean, with no radio contact, we're going to have to wait for them, guys.
Katie! Katie! Tumelo! Do you think Mom will miss the meat from the freezer? No way.
My plan worked perfectly.
Nobody suspects a thing.
We totally pulled it off.
Puff-Puff.
Be right back.
Puff-Puff.
Oh, there you are.
What was that? Uh nothing.
Nothing.
It wasI have a cold.
it didn't sound like a cough.
Uh, she's got allergies.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Do you want to hold Puff-Puff? No, thanks, I think he's what I'm allergic to.
Oh.
Okay.
See you.
Hey, uh, the first bus is leaving, so you can go home now.
Katie and my friends aren't back yet.
You aren't actually worried about someone besides yourself, are you, Rebel? All right.
Last night I was scared, but if this is another one of your little lessons, just cut the crap.
Hilary's got a radio, so if they'd run into any kind of trouble, we'd have heard by now.
Hey they will be okay.
Well, I'm not going anywhere until they get back.
Now this this is like old times.
I have been dying for some decent food.
Thank you.
No, not that your braai wasn't delicious.
But you have to admit, this is more our style.
Oh, I don't know.
Don't you think the Blue Antelope has a certain rustic charm? Rustic, maybe.
Charm? Not so much.
Okay.
We've always been honest with each other, so why don't you just say what you've been dying to say since you got here? You think I made a mistake.
All right, yes.
I've been holding my tongue because I love you, but, Jo, honestly.
Look at you.
I think this is Danny's dream, and you want to believe that it's yours, too.
But, come on: maid, plumber, cook? You're a lawyer and a damn good one, too.
I wanted this just as much as Danny did.
For us and our family.
I'm sorry, Jo.
But I know you better than anyone, even better than Danny, and I know in my heart that you will never be happy being a lodge owner in the middle of nowhere.
How do we get out of here? I'll have to climb up and get some help.
Hey, be careful.
Oh, my God.
Oh Tumelo, grab my hand! Grab my hand! Come on.
Are you okay? I'm fine.
I'm fine.
Hilary, come in.
It's Matt.
Hilary, where are you? Hilary, come in.
Hilary isn't responding.
I'm calling in the rangers.
I want to call home.
I've got to tell my parents Katie's missing.
We have to stop the bleeding.
Make it tight.
Okay.
Doctor's daughter, remember? You're going to be fine.
Don't be afraid.
Someone will find us.
What? You're shivering.
It was stupid getting wet.
What's wrong? I do try to impress her.
Maybe friendships can't survive with so much distance.
Our lives truly are worlds apart.
I moved us here.
I feel like it's all my fault.
No, don't.
Jesse called.
Katie and some of the other kids are missing Look, I know that area like the back of my hand.
Joe, wait here.
??? find them.
Here.
All right.
I I think I'm getting hypothermia.
Okay.
What are our options? I need you to help me keep warm.
Okay.
Matt, we're going to head up the east ridge and look there.
??? there The rangers are on the way.
Oh, I'm not waiting.
I'm going up.
Oh, yeah.
That's a good idea.
With no survival skills, absolutely no idea where you're going.
What, we'd just have another lost kid.
Is that what you want? Look, Katie's out there, and she's afraid, and I know that because I did every possible thing I could to freak her out about coming on this trip.
Look, you made your point.
I know that I can't do it alone.
I need your help.
All right.
Now you do everything I tell you.
Is that clear? Yeah.
Tumelo? I'm okay.
You need a doctor.
Hello?! Can somebody hear us?! Can someone please help us?! Katie! Katie! Danny! Have you heard anything? We came up the Gauteng trail, and then the rangers are searching up the other trail from the base camp where they started from.
That'll take hours.
No.
We should take the fire trail.
Get in.
Get in.
Come on, come on.
Hey.
What are you doing? I'm helping.
You sit.
I'll make us some tea.
Please let her be all right.
Excuse me, ??? Hey! Hey! What happen? Where's Katie? She and Tumelo went to look for me.
Listen, I'm really sorry, Dr.
Clarke.
It's like they just vanished.
Show us where you saw them last.
They must have gone somewhere over there.
White stinkwood trees.
So? They grow at the openings of caves.
Well, what do we do now? We look.
Tumelo, we have to stay awake.
Come on.
I'm trying.
We'll have to keep talking.
I'm so sorry I put you in this position.
I've been wanting to spend a little quality time with you.
Finding bonding time these days is so hard.
Yeah, I hear you.
Tumelo! Katie! Katie! Katie! Katie! Tumelo! Tumelo? Tumelo, stay awake.
Tumelo, you have to stay awake.
Tumelo, you have to stay awake.
Somebody help us! help us, please! Help us! Wait, wait, wait.
I hear something.
Please! Katie? Katie! Are you in there? Katie! Jesse! Jesse, is that you? You hear her? Yeah.
Katie! -I'm going down.
-No, no, no, I'll go.
I'm faster.
-You're going to need a rope.
-I'm on it.
Katie? Katie, I'm coming.
Can you please hurry? I see him.
I'm almost there.
Okay, I'm down.
All right? He needs a doctor.
There's an ambulance on the way.
I got a blanket.
Hey, you all right? Oh, oh my gosh! Katie! -Oh, you safe.
-Yes.
How is Tumelo? He ??? doctor ??? be fine.

He ??? doctor ??? be fine.
Hey,??? about me.
