The Finale

This is the Next in Fashion Grand Finale.
Where two of the world's
most talented and promising designers
will go head-to-head to prove
they are the next big thing in fashion.
This has been a journey
of epic proportion.
Throughout the competition,
they've made head-turning looks
for the red carpet.
Crafted impeccably tailored suits.
Blown us away with va va voom
lingerie designs.
Worked up a sweat,
making very chic activewear.
Revolutionized denim and tackled
just about everything in between.
No rules, no themes, just two designers
making ten looks each
and giving it everything they've got.
Oh, my God. You're real!
- Don't do that.
- Oh, hey!
[laughing]
[theme music playing]
Give me five. We can do this.
We're in the final.
I can't believe I'm here.
Wow.
This is completely outside
of my wildest dreams
of when I came into this competition
to now.
Crazy.
From my grandmother teaching me
to paint
to going to Saint Martin's
to producing
my first ever collection
to seeing my first garments hung
in a store.
Everything feels like it has led up
to this point.
So many mannequins.
I could potentially win $250,000,
which would allow me
to transform my company.
This could change my life forever.
Daniel, you have to dress up
all these mannequins behind you.
[laughing]
During the competition,
it was really difficult
because I was afraid, and I feel
like I didn't show myself.
In Korea, as a designer,
I'm still very hidden.
It's like, me and my sister,
she's more like the business part.
I take more, like, a creative part.
My sister is a really tough tiger.
She's really critical.
[woman speaks Korean]
It's like she's killing my creative.
I see the fashion really positive,
in a beautiful way,
but on the other side,
it's really hard and tough.
Creatively, I have to sacrifice
so many things, you know.
That's beautiful.
- Definitely it's a bit different.
- Mm-hmm.
I think this is the right time
to show people what is really Minju Kim.
[chattering]
Daniel and Minju!
Daniel and Minju, congratulations,
there are just two of you left.
Can you believe it?
[laughs] No.
I don't know if this is really happening.
- Poke.
- I'm here.
- Aw.
- [laughing]
Well, this whole competition
really comes down to this moment.
The Grand Finale. That's right.
One of you standing here
will be named the Next in Fashion.
One of you will be the winner of $250,000
from Net-a-Porter,
the world's premier online luxury
fashion destination.
And Net-a-Porter is also awarding
the winner the opportunity
to retail their designs on their site,
which is massive.
[laughs]
Daniel and Minju,
are you ready for the rules?
Let's do this.
- This is the mother of all challenges.
- [inhales]
We're gonna give you three days
to make your entire collection.
That means you need to do ten designs.
- Lovely, huh?
- [laughs]
[Alexa Chung] To keep the experience
as real world as possible,
during your workdays, you'll both
have access to a team of three sewers.
You'd be really hard-pressed, I think,
to find a designer out there
who sews an entire collection
by themselves.
They are, indeed,
your fashion support crew,
but you need to know that you cannot
consult them on anything creatively.
This is your chance to really show us,
through your designs, who you are.
The only thing that we ask of you
is that that final look
within your collection
really is a showstopping design.
Save the best till last and make it count.
So no challenge introduction
would be complete without Tan and I
- doing a little brag about our lovechild.
- Yeah.
- The thing we're the most proud of
- Yes.
- in this show.
- Oh, not this.
It is, of course,
the Next in Fashion closet.
[Alexa] Ta-da!
Oh?

Everyone welcome
our most special guests yet
your families.

[sobs] Oh, no! Oh!

You're with your mommy, you can!
[Daniel] Oh, my God.

seeing your family?
I just can't believe it.

She hates flying.
You hate flying?
I wouldn't miss this for the world.
Aw.
We knew from the day you were this big
that you were going to do
something creative,
and you've not stopped since that day.
Keep on doing what you do, son.
And also, do what Céline Dion would do.

- Just be fabulous.
[laughing]
- We're all really proud of him.

[sobbing]

How do you feel, having your family here
with you right now?
- I'm so happy, because I really miss them.

Yeah, this is my mom.
You can see that, right?
- Yeah, I can.
- And my father.
I've really missed my sister.
[laughing]
Mom, any final words of advice for Minju?
[speaking Korean]
- Minju.
- Yes.
You know this, don't look too far ahead,
just focus on today.
Keep your focus on the present moment.
Okay, that's right, that's right.
And then you, any final words of advice
for your sister?
You know, this might be the last chance
that she can do whatever she likes,
because it's all business.
She doesn't get to do what she wants
to do.
- I'm the one actually stopping her.
- [laughing]
- Yes, we hear.
- Yeah.
So enjoy this moment.
- [Tan] Good.
- Yeah.
Well, it means so much to us that you guys
have flown from across the world
to be here, and we are gonna save you
front row seats at the finale,
but for now, families,
please wish these guys good luck

Seeing my family here has given me
the push that I needed.
[Abigail] Good luck.
[Daniel] My parents have been
so supportive my whole life,

[laughing]

Daniel and Minju, are you ready?
Here we go! ♪
The Next in Fashion finale starts
Here-- here-- here we go! ♪
[both]now!
[Daniel] This is the first chance I've had
in this competition
to express my true vision,
and I already know what I'm gonna do.
It's been in my head, actually,
for the whole competition.
I'm inspired by the Bright Young Things.
They were a group of high society
socialites in London in the 1920's,
and they did these crazy
fancy dress parties.
It was all about being whoever
you wanted to be,
and I want this collection
to embody that spirit,
and each look in the collection
will be a different character.
I've come up with a lot of ideas,
but really, it's like, ten men's looks.
- Like, I think I need to do a dress.
- Yeah.
Can you make something for me?
- You're not gonna wear it.
- [laughing]
I would wear it.
- When? Halloween?
- [laughing]
[Minju] My concept is Frida Kahlo,
the most famous feminist painter
in the world, I think.
I always wished to make a collection
inspired by her.
This finale is my chance
to make whatever I want.
So I will go for it.
I'm gonna make lots of dresses,
and I want to use lots of color.
Feminine, elegant, and definitely,
it will be about the volume.
This is what inspires me.
[laughing] It makes me really happy Minju.
You know? I'm doing my collection! Yay!
Like that.
Oh, guys, we've got a lot to do.
- [laughing]
- All right!
[sighs] What I've started with today,
is, like, my base pieces,
so, like, there's a pair of jeans
that we'll do a few different colors of
and some silk shirts that we'll do
a few different colors of.
I've done the pattern for the jeans
and the shirt.
We can just start now, whilst I figure out
what the rest of the collection's
gonna look like.
My strategy making the collection is
to start with my base.
Trousers, jeans, shirts and jerseys.
And then I'll build on top of it.
The collection comprises
of four women's looks
and six men's looks.
Today, my focus will really be
on my men's looks. That's my strength.
Let's just get cracking.
I've got this amazing team of sewers
to help me produce this collection.
Sophie, could you trace this off?
When I work on my collections normally,
I'm not sitting behind a sewing machine,
sewing the whole thing. There's a team.
So you'll cut like this, yeah.
So to make an entire collection
in three days,
I need their help to get this done.
[sighs]
I didn't know I'm gonna be the finalist.
[laughing]
So I was really not ready for this.
I just worry about myself.
Making ten looks, honestly,
we need like, two months.
So to have a successful collection
in this finale,
every single second
will be really, really important.
Hmm.
If I have an idea,
I have to just go for it.
I'm thinking about using lots of jacquard
and flower fabric.
What do you think?
But the thing is,
I'm always doubting myself.
Is it good or not? Questioning forever.
Shall we do the lining?
This is gonna be definitely difficult
challenge for me.
By the end of today,
I hope I'm gonna have four looks today.
Now, I'm working on the long skirt
with apron on top,
with the country flower print.
I was gonna just stitch in the ditch.
- Here or?
- Yeah.
- But I have to wait.
- Yeah, okay.
- [Alexa] Ooh!
- Hello, Daniel.
Hi.
So this time, ten looks.
The world is your oyster.
- It is.
- What are you choosing for your theme?
There's, like,
a lot of different things going on here.
Each look is going to be
a different character.
There's going to be a look,
which is inspired by horse riding.
I'm gonna add stars to the shirt.
Also, I'm gonna add a pig snout
to one of them.
Pig nose? Oh, my God,
there's gonna be piggery on the runway?
Yeah. I'm also gonna do a look,
which is all stripes.
There's gonna be tailoring,
which will be a striped suit,
inspired by the jockey.
You haven't used anything
as, kind of, acidy as this.
No, I wanted this collection to just,
kind of, embody that spirit of freedom.
What really speaks to me
about the Bright Young Things
is their attitude towards life.
They embraced this spirit
of being whoever you wanted to be
and doing whatever you want to do.
Growing up, it was hard to do that.
I was always the kid who was matching
my socks with my T-shirt
and being in a small town, there was
not really much fashion around me.
Saying that I wanted to do fashion was
like me saying, "Yeah, I'm gay, actually."
And I think that put me off going into it.
It wasn't until I kind of moved down
to London,
that I kind of
stopped caring what people think.
[laughs] I came out, and I was like,
"Yeah, I want to be a fashion designer."
Friends say to me that my personality
changed when I came out
because it was like something
had been lifted
and I became more open and freer.
Not worrying what people think about you
allows you to be more creative.
My sewers are working on,
like, wide pants,
which is in really beautiful green.
The back, did you want that
stitched down, too?
[mutters]
- Yeah?
- Little bit.
I'm also gonna make a pair
of really historical-like pattern pants.
So that's two pants
that will be underneath dresses.
Looks like a scarf.
Yeah, I think it's nice.
I decided to add a star
onto the back of these jeans.
I mean, who doesn't want a star
on their ass?
- Hello, Minju.
- Hi, Minju.
Whoa, look at that.
So it's a Frida Kahlo inspired collection.
I'm doing only female,
because Frida Kahlo
is all about really strong women,
like, you know? Super power.
Yeah.
[Minju] Also, I really love
the Mexican traditional look.
For example, Frida Kahlo always wears
a scarf and a shawl around,
so I want to use that shape, so make it
like a triangle collar mini dress.
[Chung, Tan] Beautiful.
[Minju] I also made my own print.
[both] Ooh!
[Minju] The Indochina dragon.
[both] Ah!
[laughs]
The Dragon Princess lives on, huh?
[Alexa] Really incredible.
You've changed so much
since you started this competition.
Do you see that?
I mean, actually,
I was depending on Angel a lot.
I remember.
- Yeah.
- [Alexa] But you're so good, too.
I mean, even when you were dealing
with challenges
that you were without your partner,
like denim or military.
That's when, actually, you really shone.
- You produced some of your best work.
- [laughs] Thank you.
So you need to stop saying you can't do it
or worrying about things.
Remember, Minju, we see your talent.
You can win this.
Okay, I will go for it.
Even though people say,
"Minju, you're doing good."
I cannot be really, like, confident,

Overall, I really love her color palette.
I love the green, but not together.

Minju's on her way.
She's finished the skirt
and the apron that she has teamed with it.
The emerald green pant and she's finished
the pink and white dress.
- [Daniel] I really love this.
- I don't know why I cannot trust myself.
My biggest concern is A,
her self-confidence
- Yes.
- and whether she's gonna get lost
- in second guessing herself.
- [Tan] Yes.
[Alexa] And then secondly, that relates
to time management.
She moves at a glacial pace.
- [Minju] I'm sorry. I'm changing it now.
- [woman] Okay.
Nice. They look really good.
Daniel's done quite a lot already.
We've got the black shirt,
a cummerbund, a pair of white jeans,
star jeans
and the pink shirt with the stars.
He's also cut out the jersey
for the stripes.
[Tan] He has.
The only thing I worry about with Daniel
is, is he pushing himself enough
with the jeans and the shirts?
Because that is what he does
in his regular business today.
[Daniel laughs] Oh, my God.
There really is a star on the ass.
[laughs]
I've designed six looks so far,
and they're all men's looks.
I've not designed any of the women's looks

I'm gonna make a whole pink suit
with a petite, small top
to show more skin.

It's gonna be sexy, you know?
Minju Kim way sexy.
Let's go for it.
[sewing machine whirs]
I'm still feeling a bit overwhelmed
by the amount of work I've got to do.
There's two dresses
that I've not started yet,
so that's the next thing
that I'm gonna do.
I have this idea
of elegant evening dresses
which are deconstructed.
Right now, I'm working on my showstopper.
The idea is it's like a 50's-style dress.
My show-stopper look is inspired
by Cecil Beaton's photographs.
He was part of the Bright Young Things.
For the dress, I'm gonna take this idea
of it being a ball gown
and make it
in this stiff black denim fabric,
so it can really puff out
and then cut it away at the waist
and twist it round,
like she's been to this party
and she's lost her skirt,
and she's had to sew it back on.
I feel like it could be more dramatic.
It's a risk to put women's looks
in my collection,
because that's not
what my experience is in,
but this competition's taught me
to push myself, so I'm gonna go for it.
