Brother!
"EPISODE 10:
THE OATH"
Idah.
Did you remember
the first time
Naim got high fever?
You called me many times
but I didn't answered?
He was already admitted
and I was dawdling.
Until now, I'm still dawdling.
I don't even know
what I'm trying to get.
Naim is fighting
for his life right now, Firdaus.
The last thing he said to me was
he has never been enough for me.
I am the one who have
never been enough for him.
For Naim. For Fakhri.
What kind of a mother I am?
Doctor, how is my son?
I want to see him.
Your son's condition
is still critical.
Give me a little bit more time.
Now, Naim is still unconscious.
He has sustained a concussion,
on top of multiple injuries
to his head and ribs.
As of this moment,
we will try our very best.
Naim's condition is critical.
If there's anything,
I will get back to you.
Okay, Mr. Sin.
I'm sorry for what
has happened to those brothers.
But at the same time,
we have to make it clear
to those who's watching KUDRAT.
Everyone has to know
that Fakhri and Naim
is not a reflection
of the students of KUDRAT.
So there's no better way
other than
expelling them.
Have you heard anything about Naim?
If you know anything, tell me.
Please.
Excuse me.
Do you have Mia's phone number?
I'm sorry, dear.
I'm very sorry.
I'm sorry.
You're so strong.
You're so strong.
Please forgive me.
I love you so much.
I love you.
Naim, I love you.
I love you so much.
I love you.
I love you, son.
I love you.
So much.
Not here.
At the back.
I know since I was a kid
that Mama favour Fakhri more.
But I didn't know that
you would choose Fakhri too.
Did you know why
all these times..
You asked me why
it's hard for me to look at you.
It's not because I hate you.
Whenever I looked at you,
I actually see myself.
I see all of my failures.
As a father, as a husband.
I'm scared
of facing my own failures.
I failed to hold on to my marriage.
But you and Fakhri that
have to face the consequences.
A true man does not cry, Papa.
A true man does not cry.
A true man does not cry, Papa.
A true man does not cry.
A true man does not cry, Papa.
A true man does not cry.
A true man does not cry, Papa.
Please forgive me, Naim.
A true man does not cry.
-Please forgive me.
A true man does not cry.
Okay.
-A true man does not cry.
A true man does not cry.
Excuse me. Nor Naim
bin Firdaus Ismet. Which room?
Number 3.
Just go straight and turn left.
Okay. Thank you.
-Thanks.
Wait. Just one person allowed.
Go on.
-Are you sure?
Yes.
Thanks.
What's your problem?
That hurts.
I told you not to lose your way!
Are you okay now?
Why are you here?
Are you for real?
Didn't you already..
Because I love you, stupid!
Why?
I think I know why it's hard for
you to believe what I said before.
If you couldn't accept yourself,
if you tried
to hide, fix yourself,
how could
you trust others can, right?
Do you believe it now?
I'm sorry, Naim
for leaving you just like that.
I promise you
I won't go away anymore.
Okay?
That's not right too.
You have to wait
for me at London, right?
For two years.
Did you get the scholarship?
Don't tell me you didn't get it.
You've promised me.
I won't forgive you if you don't.
I'm smart. I did.
Of course I did.
Wait, how did you know I'm here?
Guess who.
Amirr?
Hey, hey, hey.
What are you doing, Naim? Stop!
Are you okay?
-I'm okay.
Where are you going?
Let me help..
-It's okay.
I can do it.
-Okay, fine.
Amirr!
Naim!
Amirr!
-Naim!
Naim!
-Amirr!
I'm sorry, Amirr.
No, I'm sorry. Okay?
I'm so sorry.
-No, Naim.
You don't have to apologise.
I'm the one who should.
After what happened to me,
you're my anchor, Naim.
When I felt
you're slipping away,
I was so lost.
-Amirr, I'm so sorry because
I said things about you.
It's okay.
Everyone's eyeing us now.
Screw that! I love you, man!
I love you too, Naim.
I'll get straight to the point.
There's a very high chance
the school would expel you both.
But as for now,
the school authority has decided
their two weeks
suspension begins now.
And if they are to return,
they have to summon back
to be question further.
Mr. Sin, isn't there
a way that we can
settle this..
-Dad, it's okay.
Just let me take responsibility.
Us.
Let us take responsibility.
That's very noble
of you both but
the school authorities
are intending to have
a thorough investigation.
It's time we stop everything.
From the roots.
Those who are involved
will be held accountable.
Let's just hope this
would not end with your expulsion.
Take it slow.
Alright, Idah.
If there's nothing else,
we'll excuse ourselves.
Wait.
How about you guys
stop by our house to eat?
I've cooked.
It's okay, Idah. Next time.
We'll eat on our own.
Let's go, Fakhri. Bye.
Steady, bro?
Why are you here?
Maybe because
I've never asked you before.
Try to understand.
How come these traditions that
shaped me and your brothers
came crumbled under your care?
Why do I have to interfere
to save your ass?
I've been here for five years.
You've never cared
whether I'm alive or
dead.
When it finally came to this,
then you want to save me?
You didn't like I became the Kapla.
But the things you did?
What did you do?
You bellowed at me!
You humiliated and hit me!
You told me hundred times
that I am useless!
If you did not agree,
why didn't you meet
the Principal directly?
Expose this High Council thing?
Which one should you save?
Your own son
or this stupid school tradition?
Kahar!
Remember this.
Whatever happen,
don't say anything.
I know you all feel
the sense of loyalty
towards the culture
and the traditions here.
But I need you all
to be honest..
All of these started
with the High Council.
Established in 1968.
High Council is..
Student regulatory council.
Supervise by the head of houses.
It was created to govern
our violent tendencies
by allowing us
'proper' channels to express them.
Every year, each house
has one Form 4 representative..
To enter 'The Election'.
A tournament of which
the candidates duke out
their 'Manifestoes' in a ring.
With fists.
-Kicks.
The winner of the tournament..
-Will become
the 'Kapla' of High Council.
The leader of KUDRAT's dark side.
-He's the General.
He's the Judge.
-The Jury.
Executioner.
-The one who gives blessing.
The one who says yes
to everything that's wrong.
Basically,..
-That one year..
This school belongs to him.
So
who's the Kapla this year?
It's me, Ma'am.
I'm the Kapla High Council
for this year, Ma'am.
So Fakhri and Naim
were not only fighting?
They were competing?
Just like me
and last years' candidates.
Just like the years before.
And what happened to Azam
was the result of a batch fight?
Why are you only telling this now?
I didn't expect it to come to this.
Kahar, your friends almost died.
Azam is still in the hospital.
And all because of this stupid..
Thank you Kahar.
I'm not smart, Sir.
Before I entered the Election,
before I became the Kapla,
no one noticed me.
I don't know what to do
with that absolute power.
What I know is
I only have that power.
So I became unhinged
trying to protect that power.
Everything that
happened this year,
Ikhsan,
Ariz,
the batch fight,
Ayam,..
Everything is my fault.
Well, that was dark.
Yeah, it was.
Then why are you smiling?
Well, it was
kind of bright, wasn't it?
The fact that
they're owning up to it all.
Unfortunately
it's a bit late, isn't it?
Well,
I don't think so.
I don't think it ever is.
So what happens now?
It's up to him.
"Dato' Abu Yamin:
Press from Astro asked for you
but, I've handled it.
Don't worry."
I'll go check on Fakhri.
Idah, I collected
my stuffs from the house
and I want you
to have the house.
Oh, no.
It's okay. I don't want the house.
Like you said,
I could be independent.
I apologise if
I've troubled you all along.
It's my responsibility, right?
Yes, it used to be
but, not anymore.
Idah, I know I did you wrong..
I've forgiven you.
Sincerely.
Everything happens for a reason.
But,..
-Don't worry, okay?
I'm fine.
Naim too.
I want you to know that
I told Mr. Sin that night.
If you have a problem with me,
please don't get
others involved.
All right.
-Since we're all here,
how about we have dinner
at our house?
Please come, Papa.
Fakhri.
Idah.
What are we doing?
We eat together,
act like nothing happened
and continue to fight in court?
I don't get it.
Actually, I've decided
to withdraw my claim.
Did you remember I scolded you
at the school's parking lot?
I screamed and shouted at you.
I scolded you.
I insulted you. I..
And I realized when
I screamed at you,
I was actually angry at myself.
Will you forgive me?
Idah,
what you said
is true all along.
I know it's my fault
Fakhri turned out like that.
But I don't know how to fix it.
Maybe their mom knows
how to handle them better.
Maybe Fakhri's mom would
take care of him better than I am.
Then,..
Then I became angry.
Angry at..
-I'm not angry at you.
I'm angry at myself.
I don't even understand why
I could think to that extend.
How could I do that to Fakhri?
How could I
just leave him like that?
I dispute all of your claims,
I insulted you
in front of Fakhri.
I'm sorry too, Idah.
Me too.
This feels like the Illuminati.
As I mentioned before,
we know about everything.
From the High Council,
Elections, Manifesto,
License and the Honeymoon Camp.
The students had exposed it
one by one to us.
What saddens us more,
it's all rooted
in old traditions.
Since your own school days.
Although I know all of you
had or still have
children studying in KUDRAT
but you still want
to defend the traditions
rather than protecting
your own children.
So the principal and
all the teachers have found out?
Good! It's easier
for us to discuss.
Mr. Yusoff.
Do you know who you're speaking to?
We have ministers,
magistrates, businessmen,
Tan Sris, Datos.
All successful people.
They are where they are right now
because of KUDRAT.
The product of surviving
the traditions of KUDRAT.
Now that you found out
about the traditions,
you want to challenge
the traditions that shaped us.
To take the opportunity away
from your own students?
You messed with
KUDRAT's traditions,
you'll see
how the excellent reputation
of KUDRAT would plunged.
You want to be the principal
who cause the downfall of KUDRAT?
Mr. Yusoff,
life is gruelling.
You and the teachers
should be thankful
there are
traditions that could
brought resplendence
to your students
and to your reputation,
Mr. Yusoff and the teachers.
Think carefully.
Which one is more important?
Those two heretical siblings or
the school's resplendency
which your reputation depends on.
So what now?
Based on his reaction,
we have no other choice, Mr. Sin.
Call Naim,
Fakhri and others
that are involved.
Let me explain it
and our next steps.
Peace be upon you
and good morning
to the press,
parents, the Alumni,
and the students of KUDRAT
that came to
this special assembly.
Without further ado,
the reason you were
invited to this assembly today
is to clarify
several issues that
have been circling KUDRAT lately.
Starting with the sodomy case,
the big fight between batch
which has caused
serious injuries to some students.
After the school had done
a thorough investigation,
with a sense of
humility and sorrow,
we have decided to
take full responsibility
for all of these cases.
We had failed.
Failed in recognising
a dark organisation,
namely, High Council
which regulates students'
after-school activities.
What saddens us more
is that we failed
to recognise that the Alumni
who have worked
closely with us
in terms of
the school administration
are well aware
of these activities.
However, none of them
exposed or said anything
in regards of
stopping all these.
All in the name of traditions.
We are here today
not to announce
any students' expulsion
but to unearth old traditions
that have been handed down
with the help from the press.
On that note, please welcome
Nor Naim bin Firdaus Ismet
and Nor Fakhri
bin Firdaus Ismet
as representatives
of KUDRAT's students
in swearing special oath.
Please welcome
the students of KUDRAT.
Up!
We,
-We,
Kolej Ungku Deramat students
-Kolej Ungku Deramat students
pledge to
-pledge to
keep self-reflecting
-keep self-reflecting
so we stay persevering,
-so we stay persevering,
to fight
the darkness in oneself,
to fight
the darkness in oneself,
to adhere in finding
-to adhere in finding
the real definition
-the real definition
of a true man.
-of a true man.
We swear to
-We swear to
put an end to High Council
-put an end to High Council
and every bad traditions
under its auspice.
and every bad traditions
under its auspice.
This cycle ends
-This cycle ends
with us.
-with us.
Death!
To the High Council.
Death to the High Council!
In this thesis, I wish
to closet a controversial idea
that we might have
misread the point of
William Golding's 1954 novel,
'Lord of the Flies'
for all these years.
What if, instead of
making a statement,
Golding's point
was to question
if evil is inherent to mankind.
What should we do
with that knowledge?
How do we then
live with ourselves?
How do we reconcile
with this great mourning?
What should we do once
we acknowledged the evil within?
How do we strive
for what is right
in spite of this fact?
What should we do with ourselves?
How do we navigate
a society that might shun
the brave few that would accept
this truth about themselves?
How do we rise
against the nihilism that
this acknowledgement
is certain to bring?
In this thesis,
I will attempt to answer
all of the questions above
and although my answers
will take up most of the pages,
I standby the idea that
to reach profound synthesis,
the questions that we ask
are all that matters.
So what's next?
