Henry and Gordon were alone with James.
The other engines always liked to talk of bootlaces.
"Remember when one was used to get you out of trouble?" they teased.
James tried to get his own back by talking about engines who got shut up in tunnels.
"You talk too much," said Gordon.
"A strong engine like me has something to talk about.
"l'm the only engine who can pull the express "and l seem to know the right line by instinct.
" Every engine knows that the signalman makes engines run on the right line! "Wake up, James!" said Gordon.
"lt's time for the express.
"What are you doing, odd jobs? Run along!" James went to get Gordon's coaches.
They all had lovely new paint.
"We're going away!" sang the coaches.
"l wish l was going with you," said James.
"l'd love to pull the express.
" Gordon, with much noise, got ready to back onto the train.
The Fat Controller was on the train with other important people and when the whistle went, Gordon started.
"Look at me now!" he puffed.
"Bye, James! See you tomorrow.
" James watched the train disappear and then went back to work.
He fetched some coaches for another train.
Then James heard a mournful noise.
Gordon was trying to sidle into the station unseen.
"Hello, Gordon.
ls it tomorrow?" Gordon just let off steam feebly.
"Did you get lost, Gordon?" "No.
lt was lost for me.
"l was switched onto the loop.
" "Perhaps it was instinct!" said James.
All the passengers shouted, "We want our money back!" The Fat Controller blew his whistle.
He promised them all a new train.
"Will you pull it for us, James?" "l'll try!" So James was coupled on.
"Do your best, James.
" "Come along!" puffed James.
"You're pulling us well," sang the coaches.
(Whistles) Bridges and stations flashed by and the passengers cheered.
The Fat Controller was very impressed.
"Would you like to pull the express sometimes?" "Yes, please!" said James.
Gordon was pushing trucks.
"l like quiet work for a change," he said.
"You did well with those coaches," and he gave his trucks a bump.
James sometimes takes the express to give Gordon a rest.
Gordon never talks about bootlaces and they both agree about trucks!
