Wisdom of the Crowd (2017) s01e10 Episode Script

Live Stream

1 Hi, I'm Jeffrey Tanner.
Welcome to Sophe.
We all know the Internet changed the world.
The only question is: into what? It can be a platform to bring us together or to tear us apart.
I know, because I spent my life trying to turn it into something that would connect us all.
Then - I love you, Dad.
- my daughter was murdered.
Nothing else mattered anymore.
Everyone was sure they knew who did it the police, my ex-wife but I was convinced the wrong man had been convicted and the real killer was still out there.
So together with my team, I built Sophe, a crowdsource crime solving platform powered by the smartest, most diverse, independent collection of detectives on the planet: you.
Let's get to work.
Previously on Wisdom of the Crowd Nell DeGraf sent a cease and desist.
Claiming Sophe's running codes stolen from AllSourcer.
It's not really about the code anymore.
They're coming after you.
Make nice with Nell.
TANNER: And give her a stake in Sophe? No.
Some guy comes in here in a suit, claiming to be my lawyer.
All I got to do is keep an eye out on this new fish.
Ochoa, he's telling someone else on the phone that he might know who killed her.
So I stuck him.
Flaco's lawyer wasn't too careful with the cameras.
Someone out there has to know something about this guy.
SARA (ECHOING): Isn't this adorable? - Josh? - (SNORES SOFTLY) - Josh.
- Huh? Coffee.
My God, why don't either of you have a life? Uh, Tanner? TARIQ: We were about to leave, and then a wave of posts came in about the guy who paid Flaco to shiv Carlos Ochoa in prison.
Tanner was on the warpath trying to track 'em down, so Users thought he was a cartel boss who escaped from Mexican prison last year.
That didn't pan out, so we still have no clue who this dude is.
Or his connections to Mia's case.
- Hmm.
- Oh, thank you.
Thank you.
- Dude.
- What? I only have two hands.
Um, look, we've still got a few more leads to run down.
We'll keep at it.
No, no, you won't.
You need to get some rest.
Use my office.
That's an order.
- I call the big couch.
- Come on, insult to injury? Any word? Actually, yes.
I just got off the phone with the lawyers.
Based on what came out of the depositions, AllSourcer's dropping their claim that we stole their code.
- Oh, thank God.
- Unfortunately, they're not dropping their claim for you.
They're still saying that you violated your noncompete.
Now, a judge should have a ruling on the preliminary injunction in the next 24 hours.
Okay, well, if the judge does rule against us, what happens next? You'll have to stop work, immediately.
And it won't be like last time.
This time, there won't be any coming back, at least not until after the trial.
But it could take a year to get to trial, or longer.
Yes, but let's not get ahead of ourselves, okay? Have you told Jeffrey? Yeah, he didn't take it very well.
Had a feeling I might be hearing from you, Jeffrey.
Well, I was in the neighborhood and I thought that we could chat.
Wow, you have really made this place your own since you've taken over.
It's like every IKEA I've ever been in.
Oh, well, I know how difficult change can be, Jeffrey.
But it is the one constant in life, isn't it? Gizmo, down.
(SNAPS FINGERS, GIZMO WHINES) - (WHINES) - Anyway, like I said, thought you might reach out, so I took the liberty of preparing an offer.
An excellent one, in fact.
I still want a stake in Sophe, but I'm not unreasonable about the size of it.
Frankly, I'm tired of all the wasted time, the legal bills Or maybe you're just nervous that the judge is gonna throw the case out, and you want to cut your losses.
Take the offer, Jeffrey.
That way Sara can stay at Sophe, and everyone gets what they want.
You remember when we first talked about this, you know what I said to you? I told you that I would never give you a stake in Sophe.
- Nothing's changed.
- Forgive me, but I was under the impression that Sara meant a great deal to you and your company.
I'm giving you the chance - to save her.
- From a problem that you created.
Look, you want to monetize Sophe.
The day that happens is the day that our users abandon the platform.
And I can't allow that to happen.
If you didn't want to settle this, Jeffrey, then why the hell did you come here? Because I wanted to clarify my position.
Up until now, I let the lawyers handle everything because who has the time? But now, I'm gonna make the time.
Now I'm gonna make sure that you regret the moment that you decided to cross me.
- This is beneath you.
- It is.
So what? Drop the suit.
Because if you don't, I don't care how long it takes.
I don't care if it ruins me in the process, I'm gonna destroy you.
And this company.
(RIPPING PAPER) Have a nice day.
(GROWLS) DAWN LEE: Are you ready? 'Cause I sure am.
(GASPS) Ooh, right.
(SNIFFS) Now watch me eat it.
Mmm.
Mmm, it tastes so good.
Mmm.
I bet you want to try some, don't you? (KNOCKING AT DOOR) Coming! (DOOR OPENS) DAWN LEE: What do you do no, no! - (GUNSHOT) - (DAWN LEE SCREAMING) (BODY THUDS ON FLOOR) (GUNSHOT) CAVANAUGH: She was filming herself? Are you kidding me? Dawn Lee, 23.
She's one of those AllSourcer celebrities.
She's a what? You know, one of those people that makes weird videos of themselves and get millions of views and all that endorsement money.
Okay, if you say so.
RUIZ: Apparently, people all over the planet like to watch Dawn eat.
What is this world coming to? So it's too bad the girl didn't film her own murder.
Might've been worthwhile.
She didn't, but the killer did.
- I'm sorry, what? - Yep.
Posted it about an hour ago.
(DOOR OPENS) DAWN LEE: What are you do no, no! No! - (GUNSHOTS) - (DAWN LEE SCREAMING) - (GUNSHOT) - And the killer just posted the video to AllSourcer, too.
- That's Tanner's old company.
- Exactly.
So right now all we have is a username: "EchoAvenger98.
" But we need the killer's account information.
Do you think Tanner can cut through the red tape? I'm on it.
Sorry, am I in the wrong office? Okay.
- I take it you already heard? - She made you a really good offer.
You should've considered it.
No deals.
No negotiations, all right? - We take the fight to them.
- (COFFEE POURS) File a countersuit.
For what? I don't know.
Come on, you're a lawyer.
Figure it out.
Did you tell Sara? About what, that you could've negotiated to keep her here at Sophe, but you chose not to out of what was it? Was it spite? No, I figured that was better coming from you.
It's not that simple.
Nell would destroy everything that we built here.
This is about what's best for Sophe, for solving Mia's murder.
Then I'm sure she'll understand.
CAVANAUGH: Sorry to interrupt, but I need your help.
It's urgent.
What are you do no, no! - (GUNSHOTS) - No! (SCREAMING) (PANTING) (SIGHS) So do we post this? Unless there's an excellent reason, I don't see why we subject anyone else to this.
TARIQ: Tell that to AllSourcer.
They still haven't deactivated the killer's account.
The video's got millions of views.
TANNER: We're not gonna add to those figures.
Post it, but without this video.
(PHONE CHIMES) (JOSH TYPING) And we're live.
Amazingly, I still have some friends at AllSourcer.
They're sending us the metadata on the killer's account.
- Thanks.
- No need to thank me.
I want this son of a bitch as badly as you do.
That's my platform he's using.
Not for nothing, but there are other ways to get the account info.
You do see me standing right here, right? We have enough legal headaches over at AllSourcer.
We don't need to add hacking to the list.
Guys, EchoAvenger98 just posted another video to his account.
But this one's on Live Stream.
Wait, this is happening right now? Yes.
Can I help you? - Oh, g - (GUNSHOTS) The Live Stream murder has more than four million views and counting.
I don't think I'll ever be able to get that out of my head.
What the hell is taking AllSourcer so long to shut down this account? Nell DeGraf's managerial skills on display once again.
All right, what do we got? Well, we posted everything we have on the second victim, Richard Padilla.
He's an AllSourcer celebrity, as well.
You got to see this guy in action.
RICHARD: Five pounds of hamburger meat.
Question is, "Will It Flush?" Moment of truth, my friends.
TANNER: You know what? - I-I think we've seen enough.
- Actually, the best videos are the ones that wouldn't go down.
All right, uh, Richard Padilla and Dawn Lee are two of the most popular AllSourcer celebrities in the Bay Area.
SARA: Users are almost unanimous.
They were both targeted because of their Internet-celebrity status.
Targeted by who? I mean, who is this - EchoAvenger98? - (EVIDENCE ALERT BLARING) JOSH: Whoever he is, he just posted something new to AllSourcer.
It's some kind of manifesto.
Oh, great.
We could be dealing with another Unabomber.
Put it up.
(COMPUTER CHIMES) "The Internet was built on the backs of fools.
"Fools who imagined they were working to improve society.
"But all we did was create a vehicle "for mindless self-glorification, an altar to the triumph of our own toxic narcissism.
" JOSH: "Tweeting, blogging, status updates.
All of it has to end.
A statement must be made.
" So he's blaming AllSourcer celebs for the downfall of society and using AllSourcer to broadcast his crimes.
Hypocrisy, anyone? Well, AllSourcer has more Live Stream viewers than any other platform in the world.
If you want people watching, this is the place.
He's no Hemingway, but he does have a certain flair.
What are you thinking? That one of our users might recognize these ideas.
I mean, I'm guessing it's not the first time that he's expressed them.
JOSH: All right, posting it now.
(PHONE RINGS) Tell me you got something.
How about a witness? The lady who lives upstairs says she saw a man with a gun near Padilla's building right before the murder.
You should really pair her up with a sketch artist, chief.
CAVANAUGH: Well, thank you for that suggestion, Tariq.
Never would've thought of it otherwise.
(CELL PHONE CHIMES) Nell DeGraf just got back to us.
She's on her way in to talk.
You're kidding.
I'll be right there.
NELL: Let me assure you, AllSourcer has every intention of providing our full cooperation.
We're sending you the metadata from the killer's account as we speak.
That is appreciated.
And the account has been fully deactivated.
TANNER: It's about time.
NELL: You created Live Stream, Jeffrey.
You know better than anyone the millions of videos we have to monitor every day.
We responded as quickly as we could.
How are you going to prevent this nutjob from just opening up another account and posting again? That's a work in progress.
Clearly, your safeguards weren't up to the task.
No, no, no, our-our safeguards worked.
CAVANAUGH: Okay, okay.
Let's deal with today.
So what do we do now? TANNER: Well, it's pretty simple from where I stand.
You just have to offline Live Stream We're not gonna offline Live Stream.
for the time being and then we You really are a piece of work, you know that? This guy wants an audience.
If we deny him that, he is less likely to kill.
It's in You're the one who gave him an audience, Jeffrey.
- I'm just cleaning up your mess.
- You just don't want to shut down your cash faucet, all right? Live Stream is your best source of income.
Blame me all you want.
This is not on me.
- This is on you.
- CAVANAUGH: Okay, okay, okay.
- Hey.
- (CLAPS HANDS) This was great, but we're done now.
Thank you.
Yes, thank you for your help, Ms.
DeGraf.
I will walk you out.
Are you checking over the safeguards? Yeah.
They were good, Jeffrey.
Josh and I reviewed them already.
This is not your fault.
Sure it is.
Look what AllSourcer's become.
It's a megaphone for people to broadcast their worst selves.
This is not what the Internet was supposed to be.
This-this guy, whoever he is, he's crazy, but he's not entirely wrong.
I understand where he's coming from.
And I had a hand in all this.
I should've done better.
You were the one that told me we can't control what people do with the things that we create.
Remember? Dwelling on what you could or should have done, it-it doesn't do us any good especially when we have other problems to deal with.
I'm sorry.
I I was just, I was wallowing.
(SIGHS) Listen, you this lawsuit, you don't have to worry.
I don't know what else to do.
I know it sounds crazy, but I'm-I'm tempted to call Nell and-and talk to her, one human being to another, see if we can find any kind of compromise that we can reach.
No, no, that's that's not a good idea.
Look, Sara (KNOCK ON DOOR) There's something you need to see.
NELL: What's transpired is a tragedy, but we are reviewing the safeguards that were instituted prior to my tenure.
My time at AllSourcer has been brief, but already it's clear that significant mistakes were made.
She's throwing you under the bus.
We dissected the metadata, but it got us nowhere.
The killer used Tor to access his account.
It's untraceable.
TARIQ: What about that sketch of the suspect? You should really get a move on, Detective.
I'll get right on that.
Glad you took my advice.
You're slow, but you're learning.
CAVANAUGH: Yeah, well, lucky I have you as a teacher.
Posting it now.
Can you try contributing for once instead of just cracking jokes? Whoa.
Dude.
Dude, chill.
Dude, what is your deal? Josh, I was just messing with him, man.
No, that's the problem.
- Just leave me alone, will you? - Okay.
- Is everything all right? - I don't know.
You tell me.
He just freaked out on me and he was an ass this morning, too.
Oh.
I get it.
What? I think he's upset that you might be leaving and he's just taking it out on me.
SARA: Oh, Josh.
That is really sweet.
Fine, maybe.
Okay, I'm sorry.
It's really immature, I know, but, I mean, you brought me here.
I-I don't know what this place is without you.
Okay, I'm not insulted by that.
Look, both of you, whatever happens, it'll be fine and-and you'll be fine.
Okay? (EVIDENCE ALERT BLARING) Come on.
JOSH: It looks like there's six different suspects.
A subset of users found them using forensic linguistics.
- The same way the FBI got the Unabomber.
- Yeah.
- Which is? - They identified unique word choices and grammatical constructions in his manifesto, then matched them to other writings across the Internet.
One more reason not to leave your digital fingerprints on anything.
Hold up.
Let me pull up the police sketch.
All right, now imagine him without the hat.
Same nose, same chin.
Whoa, that's Lucas King.
The Lucas King? I guess I'm not one of the cool kids.
Who's Lucas King? He's, like, one of the original Net visionaries.
Yeah, he's a pioneer.
Created one of the first search engines, but couldn't figure out how to monetize it.
SARA: And then he just fell off the map.
Yeah, psychological issues, I heard.
Shocker.
Well, it makes sense if you think about it.
His manifesto, he said, "We.
" "All we did.
" He wasn't just speaking generally.
He was indicting himself.
Then what are we waiting for? If he wants an indictment, let's give it to him.
Post it.
(EVIDENCE ALERT BEEPING) So, you know who I am now.
Likely, you'll find me soon enough.
But I have more work to do before then.
I want the world to know that I take no joy in these actions, only sorrow.
But for the good of all, they must continue.
(SIRENS WAILING) Back in the door.
RUIZ: SFPD, open up.
We have a warrant.
Wait, what's going on? What? Hey, Lucas King.
Is he here? - No.
- Is he here? No, he left last night! Oh, my God.
What did he do? Is it horrible to say that I'm not surprised? Did Lucas ever talk about doing something like this? No.
I mean, not to me, anyway.
It's just lately, um, he wasn't all there by any stretch of the imagination.
Do you have any idea where your brother might be? We just weren't talking much recently.
He just holes himself up in the garage.
You know, spends all day reading.
I-I just knew there was something wrong.
But with Lucas, there was always something wrong.
Okay.
Why'd you take him in? Who else would? Marie, his wife didn't want to talk to him anymore.
And the past 15 years, it's just been one thing after another.
First, he loses his company, then he loses his teaching job, then his house.
I mean, it just wouldn't stop.
He thought he was gonna change the world, but instead, the world just chewed him up.
Patty, if you called him, think he'd talk to you? (CELL PHONE RINGING) Hey.
Lucas? Patty.
Are you with the police? Never mind.
Doesn't matter.
Patty I am sorry for putting you through this.
You're a good person.
You deserve better.
(WHISPERING): They can't track him.
He's using a VolP.
You're a good person, too.
Deep down, I know.
No, no, it's not about good or bad.
Morality is a useless framework for ethical decision-making.
PATTY: Lucas, you can try to rationalize this all you want, but what you're doing is wrong and you need to stop.
Patty.
(CHUCKLES SOFTLY) I'm gonna go now.
- Take care of yourself.
- Lucas.
It's Detective Thomas Cavanaugh, SFPD.
Look, I know you had a point to make with what you did, but I think we all got the message.
No.
No what? No, I'm not stopping.
That's what you want, right? And, no, you haven't gotten the message.
Not yet.
But trust me, you will.
Thank you.
(TANNER CLEARS THROAT) So, I, um (CLEARS THROAT) I had a meeting this morning with Nell at her office.
- Oh.
- She made us an offer.
Said she would drop the suit and reduce the ask.
And I could stay.
I couldn't do it.
Sara, I'm so sorry, but you understand why.
Once we give away ownership, any ownership (EVIDENCE ALERT BLARING) (EVIDENCE ALERT BLARING) It's a video call from a user.
He's spotted Lucas King.
SARA: Hi, uh, Karl.
Can you tell me what's going on? KARL: Yeah, that dude who killed those people, he's here.
Wait, hold on one second.
I'm calling the police right now.
This is insane.
What do I do? Karl, how do you feel about stalling him until the police get there? Okay, yeah.
Wait.
Sorry, how? Uh, what did he order? Egg-and-cheese everything bagel.
Okay, great, just tell him that you're out of the everything bagel and you're gonna go remake the order, but-but take your time.
Can you do that for me? - Yeah, I got this.
- Wait, hold on.
What are you doing? - Listen - This is a terrible idea.
This guy killed internet celebrities, not fast-food employees.
Oh, you're sure about that, are you? Sara, he's gonna murder more people.
We cannot let him get away.
- But you can't just - Aw, crap! I told him what you said, but I got all nervous, and I think he could tell.
- He got spooked.
He just left.
- Oh, thank God.
You know what, screw it.
I'm going after him.
- Stop! - No, no, no.
No, no.
I just want to see which way he goes - so I can tell the cops.
- Don't chase after him.
Karl? No, no, don't go after him.
(GUN HAMMER CLICKS) What the hell are you doing? Detective, where are you? - (SIREN WAILING) - I'm a minute out.
Come on, man.
Please.
Just please don't hurt me.
You're not the reason I'm doing this.
- (SIREN APPROACHING) - Oh, God oh, God He let me go.
Uh, he's gone.
(TANNER SIGHS) Look, I-I-I may have just gone a little too far.
"May have"?! You could have gotten that man killed.
Does anyone else matter to you at all? As soon as you had the offer from Nell, you should have consulted with me.
It wouldn't have mattered.
Hell, you-you would have agreed with me.
But I would have had a say in it.
I built my life around this work, and my feelings were irrelevant to you.
You made a unilateral decision.
Because it's my job.
I'm in charge of this company, which means that the hard decisions are mine and mine alone to make.
I'm sorry.
It's about Mia.
It's not It's not about you.
That much is bloody clear.
(CELL PHONE RINGING) It's Mike.
What's up? Judge ruled against us.
(QUIETLY): Well, all right.
- Hey.
- Hey.
Have you seen Sara? No, she hasn't been in yet.
She's not coming back, is she? Here.
(CHUCKLES SOFTLY) Talk to me.
Where are we? Uh, no more sightings of Lucas, but instead of trying to where he is now, we're trying to figure out - where he's going next.
- We're asking users to vote on who his next target's gonna be.
Yeah, there are dozens of all AllSourcer celebrities in the vicinity, but the crowd's narrowed it to 15.
All right, well, he was last seen in the donut shop, so stands to reason he's in that area.
All right, let me sort the list by proximity.
TANNER: Then sort it again by popularity on AllSourcer.
Lucas wants to get his message out, so he'll go for targets that give him the most attention.
JOSH: These five.
- Give those five names to Cavanaugh.
- Great.
(EVIDENCE ALERT BLARING) Lucas just opened another AllSourcer account.
He's Live Streaming again.
His user name is "Lucas King oh-one.
" He's not even trying to hide anymore.
I know I don't have much time left I'll be apprehended soon.
I have no control over that.
But what I do have control over is what I do with the time left.
I will act, no matter what the circum I think AllSourcer just cut the feed.
At least they're getting faster.
Not fast enough.
He's trying to make a statement that people will remember.
And as long as he has a platform to broadcast, he's not gonna stop.
So what do we do? We take away his platform.
(PHONE RINGING) Patty, you shouldn't call me anymore.
Lucas, it's Detective Cavanaugh again.
Please, don't hang up.
Just listen to me.
When we spoke before, you said people hadn't heard your message yet.
They have now.
Millions of people around the world, Lucas.
I mean, that's what you wanted, right? To be heard? The kid at the donut shop, you could have killed him, but you didn't.
And it's because there is something in you that's telling you that this is wrong, man.
It doesn't matter, Detective.
Right or wrong, it's irrelevant.
And you have no idea how I feel.
- Lucas - Don't call me anymore.
What are you doing? My visa is contingent upon me having a job here.
Since that isn't an option anymore We should talk about this.
We had an opportunity to do that, but you made your choice.
No, Sara, listen, that doesn't mean that I don't care about you.
All right? I don't I don't know what I would do without you.
(PHONE RINGING) You have work to do.
You should go.
We don't need to belabor this.
Please Please don't go like this, all right? Let's go to dinner.
We'll talk about it, all right? We can figure this out.
I don't think that's a good idea.
I'm sorry, I don't.
(PHONE RINGING) (DOOR SHUTS) (SOBBING) - Please, sit down.
- Jeffrey, um, I can't even believe that I'm here asking you this.
I just I saw the new information that you posted about Mia's case, and David keeps telling me to stay off of Sophe, but I just need to know is there any truth to this? This is for real.
I promise you.
The guy that paid Flaco to attack Carlos Ochoa, we have video on him.
Cavanaugh's friend at the prison sent us this video, all right? The problem is, he was pretending to be an attorney, so they put him in a private room where there's no audio.
So the video's useless, isn't it? No, no, no, not with Sophe come here.
Let me show you something.
- ALEX: What am I looking at? - TANNER: Look at this.
She can read lips.
Okay, he's saying, "All you need to do is keep an eye on him.
"But if Carlos says anything about Mia Tanner "and who might have killed her, then you need to take him out.
" - Now, the problem is - Oh we don't know who this guy is yet, but we put it out there.
He's saying that somebody else killed Mia? Yeah.
Yes.
Are you okay? - Um - You all right? I'm gonna get going.
I have a (CLEARS THROAT) I have a meeting, and then I'll just call you.
- Okay.
- Or you can - you can call me.
- Okay.
Hey, what's the status, guys? GREENE (OVER COMM): All quiet here.
- Not exactly.
- (LOUD MUSIC PLAYING IN HOUSE) A lot of loud music from the house.
The lady's some kind of famous lip-syncher pretty weird.
Stickin' out their tongue like, "Entertain us" Never been nothin' but a fighter Never backed down, never ran from a fire.
(MUSIC STOPS) What's the business? I click my heels and I wish CAVANAUGH: We're doing our rounds between the targets.
We're on our way to you now.
- (TIRES SCREECHING) - Whoa! (HORN STUCK, BLARING) Go, go.
(HORN BLARING) (HORN STOPS) What the hell? Are you okay? Do not move! Let her go! Put her down, now! - (SCREAMING) - Shut up! - Drop the weapon! - Stay back! Let her go, now! Stay back! Nice and easy.
(WOMAN SCREAMS) (SIREN, PARAMEDIC HORN BLARING) (INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER) The exits are covered, snipers are ready to go.
Let's talk entry scenarios.
No, not not quite yet.
Excuse me, but why the hell not? Just stand by, Captain.
Keep your guys ready.
Tanner, this way.
- Take off your jacket.
- All right.
- Are you sure about this? - Listen I speak his language, for better or worse.
- Fine, just keep it simple, all right? - All right.
I got this.
All right, just just keep him talking, okay? Okay, sir.
Lucas.
- It's Detective Cavanaugh again.
- LUCAS: Back off, - or I swear she's dead! - (MUFFLED SCREAM) CAVANAUGH: Lucas.
Lucas, just calm down.
I have someone out here who would like to talk to you.
Lucas.
It's Jeffrey Tanner.
October, 1995, you were giving a symposium at Berkeley, on coding theory.
I was there.
I tried to sneak in 15 minutes late, and you called me out in front of the whole class.
I don't know if you remember.
No.
TANNER: It was the only time that we met.
But you said something that I'll never forget that day.
You said that "Any moron can put up a website.
" LUCAS: I used to say that a lot.
And you were right.
You knew where all this was heading before anyone.
Listen, I I understand why you're doing this.
Believe me, I do.
But the genie is out of the bottle.
We can't go back.
The only thing we can do is go forward.
How? Let me in, Lucas.
Let me in, and we'll talk about it.
Whoa, whoa hold on, Lucas.
Wha what the hell are you doing? Look, he's gonna kill her.
Do you have another plan? Trust me.
Lucas? Okay.
Okay.
But just you, all right? Everybody else, stand back! Whatever you want, whatever you want.
- Just calm down, Lucas.
- Come on, come on, come on, come on.
(CRYING) Hey! Hey hey Stay no, no, no.
No, no, no, no.
No.
You said we could move forward.
How? Not like this.
Well, somebody's got to hold up the mirror.
Somebody's got to show how toxic all this has become.
I believe that's how it started.
But that's not what you're doing now.
Now it's about you.
It's about you making people pay for all the pain that you've been through.
No, no, you You don't understand.
You don't know what you're talking about.
Believe me, I do.
I feel that pain every day.
You can kill this girl.
You can kill every celebrity on AllSourcer.
But tomorrow morning, you're gonna wake up, and you're gonna feel the same way.
LUCAS: No.
You're wrong.
See, I'm doing this, uh, you know, I-I because I'm doing this because I have a purpose.
I want people to see that - See? On Live Stream? - Yeah.
When's the last time that you logged on? It's been taken off-line.
My people hacked into it.
We shut it down.
No, no No one will be able to see your message anymore.
Lucas.
You have to let her go.
(DISPATCHER SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY) - There he is.
- Oh, thank God.
- (CRYING) - Hey.
It's all right.
It's all right.
Okay.
CAVANAUGH: Good work, good work.
All right.
Get back now.
CAVANAUGH: Okay, Lucas! You can come out, now.
Lucas, put down the weapon now! - Lucas.
Drop it - Put it down! CAVANAUGH: and get on the ground! TANNER: Put it down, Lucas.
Don't you see? He wants you to shoot him.
He wants another spectacle.
Don't give it to him.
Don't give it to him! Lucas No! (KNOCKING ON DOOR) Hey.
Nice place.
You should invite me up more often.
To what do I owe the pleasure? Remember how you thought Lucas got around the Live Stream safeguards by hacking? I think you were wrong.
I may have, uh, stumbled across this during the hack.
In the last 36 hours, our stock is down 15%.
So let's open the floor and get some ideas rolling.
Sorry to interrupt, everyone.
But we're gonna need this room.
(DOOR CLOSES) Take five, people.
You do realize we're amending our suit.
You don't strike me as the overly litigious type, now.
Make jokes all you want, Jeffrey, but hacking AllSourcer? You actually think you'll get away with that? TANNER: Actually, I do.
What is this? Proof.
That you compromised Live Stream's safeguards for monetary gain.
- Excuse me? - See, when I was CEO, we had thousands of live human moderators.
It is truly the only way to police what gets posted on Live Stream.
MIKE: According to those personnel records, you cut back by 90%, Nell.
That's how Lucas King got past the safeguards.
There was no one minding the store.
Where did you get this? Does it matter? MIKE: Saved a lot of cash, I bet.
Look, I'm not too proud to admit, but I did suggest the same thing to Jeffrey once.
And you see why I said no, don't you? No? Okay.
Well, then, I th I think a public shaming is in order.
Live Stream press conference.
MIKE: How long do you think it will be until the board fires her? Hours? Probably crack under pressure.
I don't know.
Gonna be quick.
Try it.
We could.
Or we could make a deal.
Drop the lawsuit.
Forget about this alleged hacking.
And most importantly, leave Sara alone.
And you won't mind that the world still thinks the safeguards were your fault? It'll eat me alive, but at least my company will be whole.
I can live with that.
Fine.
Whatever.
You're a miserable person, Nell.
Good-bye, Jeffrey.
(DOOR OPENS, CLOSES) Would it kill you to smile? For old times' sake, Mike? Let me see those chompers.
Bring it in.
Whoa, whoa wait, oh wait, oh okay.
My little salt and pepper Pooh Bear.
- That is awesome.
Okeydokey.
- Mm So, you're probably not gonna believe me.
Probably not.
But I was never worried.
I knew you weren't going anywhere.
Well, I wish you would've imparted this confidence to me.
No, see, that can't be taught.
That's a gift.
- SARA: Ah.
- That's just what I'm born with.
Yeah.
Oh, I see.
Right.
I'll keep that in mind.
TANNER: Hey.
When did you get back? Uh, just a few minutes ago.
It's over.
Yeah.
It's-it's hard to believe.
(CLEARS THROAT) You know what? Can we talk for a second? Sure.
This isn't gonna work, is it? I was a pawn in a game.
I'm never gonna be okay with that.
I don't blame you.
I don't blame you, either.
I know that you were trying to do what was best for Mia, but I need someone who's gonna put me first.
- Yeah.
- Do you understand? Yeah.
I care about you so much, and the work here is everything.
But it's really hard to do both.
So we'll just focus on the work.
- All right.
- Yeah.
Listen.
We're gonna be fine.
- Don't worry.
- Right.
I'll see you later.
All right.
(PHONE RINGING) (PHONE BEEPS) Yeah.
Hey.
I'm in.
Whoever did this, we'll find them.
Together.
That's all I had to say.
Um, just take care of yourself, okay? Bye.
