Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street (2014) s01e12 Episode Script
Gortimer and the Lost Treasure of Normal Street
I've lived my whole life
on Normal Street.
There's a lake at one end,
and a forest of shady trees
at the other.
But what lies in between
is anything but normal.
Woman:
I hope that gives you
a sense of the generosity
and compassion
I see in Stanley.
And I'd like to ask
all of you as our community
to remind him that when he
faces life's challenges
that it's his responsibility
to hold onto
the goodness and kindness
that shine in him
so brightly today.
This has been a very
lucky year for us,
and a very lucky year
for Stanley.
We're so
proud of you.
Mazel tov.
And now,
I'm going to pass the mic
over to Stanley's dad, Phil.
Thank you.
Thank you, Cherise.
And thank you all
for joining us in the
Captain Normal Room.
A room that celebrates
the history of our town,
as we celebrate
an historic moment
for our family.
Stanley and I both
turn 13 tomorrow.
Stanley's religion
marks his birthday
as an important
rite of passage from
boyhood to manhood.
But what does it mean
to be a man anyway?
You hear people say
men are brave,
men are tough,
men are responsible.
But my mom is
all those things,
and she's a woman,
obviously.
How many men
do I really know?
There's my own dad.
He and my mom are divorced.
He's an epidemiologist.
He spends all his time
in distant countries
making sure people
don't get diseases.
I guess that sounds
manly to me.
I just wish he was here
and not stuck off the coast
of Venezuela.
He might as well be
Captain Normal.
You've been my joy
since that very first day,
and even more today
as you become a bar mitzvah.
L'chaim.
All: L'chaim.
Wow. You're really
good at this.
What are you doin'
at lunchtime?
[knocking]
- Good morning, Ms. Gibbon.
- Good morning.
Ooh. Can I crash
this waffle party?
You always do.
I was hoping this tradition
wouldn't go away
with Gortimer's childhood.
Gortimer's childhood goes on
another five years.
Legally.
He'll always be my baby.
Gross.
[chuckles] I'm glad
you're here.
With Gortimer's dad
now stuck,
I'm scrambling for
a new plan.
You got any ideas?
What's your
tolerance level for danger
now that Gortimer's
a teenager?
Oh, happy birthday.
Oh, happy birthday.
Thanks.
- Oh.
- Good morning.
Good morning, son.
Did you write this,
Gardner?
I didn't draw that.
You did.
In second grade.
Gortimer: Oh.
"Dear Teen Gortimer,
"Happy 13th birthday.
"This is big.
You're probably
taller than Daddy,
"and shave, too.
"Mommy and Daddy
got you a puppy.
"You have your own money.
You mow lawns.
"You get to be at
Ranger's until nine.
"And you find
Captain Normal's treasure.
"Your life is fun.
"Your friend,
"Gortimer Gibbon.
Age 7."
Wow, I-- I really saw
the future.
Your dad was obsessed
with finding that treasure
as a kid, too.
When he gets back,
maybe you could
look for it together.
Mom.
Okay, we're gonna do
presents tonight,
but here is
a little one,
Mr. Teenager.
- Oh.
- Perfume?
Cologne.
It's-- it's cologne.
Thanks.
Oh, I have a surprise
for you, too.
But it requires a blindfold.
Uh--
Oh.
I haven't done this
since second grade.
Exactly. It'll be
just like old times.
Fred: But after years of
traveling the high seas,
Captain Normal wanted to
get away from the pirate life,
so he moved his life
to this spot,
where he founded
Normal Street.
He lived a normal life,
he raised a son,
and when he died,
the location of his
greatest treasure
- died with him.
- Died with him.
I remembered
that whole thing.
Okay, you guys want to
find that treasure?
You ready?
Okay, so you see
Captain Normal is
already pointing the way
to the first clue,
and to Yogurt Yurt
where you will get a
15 percent discount
with this map.
Now, get along
with you, mateys.
Arrr!
Thank you.
Oh, hey, guys.
Map?
No, thanks.
Somebody wants to pay
full price for yogurt.
If I were a pirate and
I was hiding treasure,
I wouldn't build
a giant statue
pointing directly
at the first clue.
If anything,
I would have it pointing
in the wrong direction
just to throw everybody off.
Check out his other hand.
Maybe the spyglass
is the clue.
I bet it's in the
Captain Normal room.
Oh, so you are interested
in the treasure hunt.
Well, I'm not
uninterested.
"Do not touch."
No problem.
Here.
I can't see anything.
Can you?
Isn't it supposed to be,
like, long?
Maybe the clue's inside.
Let's just
take it to Mel's.
She'll know what to do.
But it's not like
we can just steal it.
Leave your library card.
Mel: Ranger,
grab my cleaning kit.
One drop, right there.
Is that it?
Words?
That's weird.
Close the blinds.
[sighs]
That treasure hunt
didn't go anywhere.
Luckily, we can still
celebrate your birthday.
These were supposed to
go on your waffles
this morning.
- Thanks, Ranger.
- You know,
Captain Normal
wouldn't have had something
as strong as a flashlight.
"My favorite day."
Whoa.
[chuckles]
We're on an actual
treasure hunt.
In the event
that we find it,
we should decide how
we're gonna split it up.
I already know what
I'm gonna do with my share.
Wood fired pizza oven.
Hover sneakers.
An inventor to make
the hover sneakers.
A private jet for my dad.
A camel tracking
photo safari in Morocco.
Okay, Captain Normal's
favorite day.
His house was completed
in 1840.
We don't know
the exact day.
We do have
his wedding date,
his date of birth,
and the day he died.
I think we can eliminate
the day he died
as his favorite.
He lived 18,263 days.
That's a lot to narrow down.
I wonder if he
kept a diary.
He was a captain.
He would have kept a log.
I don't think pirates
were big on paperwork.
He did keep a log.
It's back at the
Captain Normal Room.
It's closed by now.
Wait.
We can still get in.
Remember,
the Mayor gave you
that key to the city.
That was an honor.
I can't abuse it.
You wouldn't.
You'd be using it
to help the city.
Which is why you got it
in the first place.
Plus, if we discover
the treasure,
do you really think
the Mayor's gonna care?
We'll be heroes.
[mouthing]
June 17th, 1840,
was Captain Normal's
wedding day.
"Today I married
my cousin Victoria."
Eww.
Try Founder's Day.
January 9th, 1841.
"My life is
forever transformed.
"Today I have a son."
Wow.
He founded our town
that very same day.
That must have been
his favorite.
He found a way to mark it
for all of history.
Look.
"I wish only
the best for you,
my beloved son."
And there's an arrow
pointing to this thing.
"Son, you are truly the
embodiment of all my hopes
for the future,
"and also a happy farewell to
all of the pain of my past."
You know he'd be here
if he could.
But he's not,
is he?
Look, I get that he has
a really important job,
and he can't always be here,
but I'm only
gonna turn 13 once.
I'm his oldest son.
I should be the
embodiment of all his hopes.
Captain Normal's
a better dad than mine,
and he's a pirate.
I'm sorry, it--
You don't have to
apologize.
Of course,
we might be on the verge of
a really big discovery.
Whatever about me.
I just wish--
I wish--
I don't know.
Wait, wait.
Wish,
"I wish only the best
for you, my son."
Where are wishes granted?
Um--
Birthday candles.
Shooting stars.
Wishbones.
Wishing wells.
The wishing well.
Ranger: "Son, you are truly
the embodiment of all my hopes
for the future."
Why doesn't this
make sense?
I mean, we know
this is the answer,
and what's doubly
frustrating
is that there's an arrow
pointing right at it.
Captain Normal never points
in the right direction.
He's too clever.
"Start true, up four,
over two."
Ranger: Does he mean
the stones?
Up four stones,
over two.
Alternate theory:
Maybe it's not inside
the well.
It's a round well.
Where do you start?
Start true?
True north.
Wait. I can find that.
Uh--
I've got my compass.
You know, nobody's ever
made it this far.
Nobody's even looked
through the spyglass.
We might actually
find the treasure.
North.
Up four stones,
over two.
We'll see.
"When you find your heart,
drop anchor."
What does that mean?
This held a key.
Maybe it fell out.
I don't see it.
It doesn't matter
without the key.
Someone else was here
before us.
Let's--
Let's just go home.
We've made it this far.
Let's keep going.
My dad didn't show up.
Treasure's gone.
This is the worst
birthday ever.
Are you kidding?
If we find the treasure,
it'll be the best birthday ever.
Don't give up, Gortimer.
This guy sailed all over.
It could be anyplace.
And he always
returned home.
Home sweet home.
Home is where
the heart is.
He's pretty sentimental
for a pirate.
He was.
So he's talking about
his house. Right?
Normal Manor?
Come on, man.
It's your birthday.
I mean,
how amazing would it be
if we did find the treasure?
Pretty amazing.
Great.
To Normal Manor.
"When you find your heart,
drop anchor."
Where does this go?
[sighs]
Nada.
What's this?
Do we open it?
It could definitely
hold treasure.
But it could also send
a spike right through
your heart
before you get the door
halfway open.
I'll risk it.
Not even one bat?
It's a cellar.
Who wants to
go first?
It's your birthday.
Look.
It's a door.
Come on.
Let's move this.
Gortimer:
"We shall always be together,
"even when we're apart."
Gortimer.
Is that the same key
from the well?
How'd it get here?
[rattling]
It doesn't work.
It has to.
I can't believe it.
But the key fits.
We found all those clues,
we did everything right, but
I don't understand
why it doesn't work.
Man: Yeah, it didn't work
for me, either.
Dad?
Oh.
Happy birthday,
son.
What are you doing home?
They lifted
the quarantine.
It was a false positive,
so I jumped on

How'd you know
I was gonna be here?
Well, when your mother
told me you guys were
doing the treasure hunt,
I knew you'd be

get to this point.
Plus, it's as far as
I ever got, so come on.
Okay.
[chuckles]
Yeah.
[rattling]
[clattering]
This one says "Junior."
Mel: And this one says
"Senior."
I guess
this one's for you.
