Harry's Law (2011) s01e12 Episode Script

Last Dance

Previously on "Harry's Law" - Adam.
- I take back my apology for kissing you.
I'm still in love with you.
The prosecuting attorney is Kim Mendelsohn.
She is putty to me.
I am embarrassed that you and I were once a couple.
It doesn't exactly help my career to be associated with you.
Malcolm and I are going on a date.
- Why? - I was really hoping to get your support on this.
You don't get it.
So, this is, like, a real thing, you and me? The Law is a system of rules.
Nowhere does it say you get to break them.
Nowhere does it say you get to make your own rules.
I've had it with the whole squalid, putrid maggoty, that's what it is.
How about we hold this whole Mr.
Peyton, that's enough.
so-called justice in contempt.
- Take him away.
- I don't really dislike you, you know.
Defence attorneys I have to think of them as the enemy, that's all.
I don't dislike you.
Have a good night, Mr.
Peyton.
We have to go, Harry.
No, we don't.
I hate those stupid black tie For us, starting a new firm, it would be stupid from a business - standpoint to skip the annual - so let's be stupid.
Too many good possible contacts for us to ignore.
Is staff invited? I think just trial lawyers.
I think you should go, Harry.
Well, I'm not going.
Who is it? What do you want? Again?! You did what?! What happened? Growing up, I had a dream house.
Who doesn't? We all grow up thinking of our dream house.
I had one, you had one, I had one.
Actually, I dreamt of living in a pup tent.
I was driving around tonight and, um, I saw it.
Exactly as I imagined it, every little detail.
Like a vision, which, I don't know, since I forgot to take my meds, who knows, maybe that's what it was.
What happened, Josh? I thought If just for a minute, I could pretend that it was mine, you know? Just to know the feeling.
I walked up the path, like it was my path.
The front door was unlocked.
I turned the knob.
And I-I went inside.
And-and-and there was a den.
Of course there would be.
With a big, overstuffed chair, just like the chair I sat right in that chair, that's what I did.
That's what I did.
And then, I went upstairs.
This gets better.
And the master bedroom was where I knew it would be.
The bed, it had these crisp white sheets, and I sat on the bed.
And then, in the bed, I saw there was a woman sleeping.
What? How I didn't see her when I went into the room, not a clue, not a clue, but there she was.
This beautiful woman, just like the woman I always dreamed I'd marry.
Alabaster skin, not a blemish.
Then she woke up.
That didn't go well.
That didn't go well at all.
He's been charged with breaking and entering, assault Assault?! He scared the crap out of her.
His arraignment is at 2:00.
I told him I'd handle it.
Meantime, I'm going to try to get him released.
What's wrong with that guy? What's wrong with him? He's lost his mind, that's what's wrong.
Oh, God, not again.
Hello.
I'm looking for a lawyer.
My name's Adam Branch.
I'm an attorney.
- And you are? - Nancy Jones.
My son is in some trouble and needs a lawyer rather quickly, I'm afraid.
Okay.
What kind of trouble is he in, exactly? He's been sentenced to death.
Okay, let's have it.
When I tried to reach for your hand last night, you just pulled it away.
I was reaching for my drink.
Don't lie to me, Malcolm.
You were embarrassed.
You were embarrassed with a public display of affection with me.
Is it because I'm super-white? No, Jenna.
It's not because you're super-white.
Then what? Well I know how Harry feels about the whole thing, and I'm just kind of self-conscious about You know, in front of her? This is a problem.
You need to kiss me in front of Harry.
Excuse me? You heard me.
We can't go anywhere if you're embarrassed to be with me.
And if you can't kiss me in front of Harry, who is like family, then I don't know what.
Look, Jenna.
I You'll kiss me in front of Harry, end of discussion.
Well, can I kiss you now? 'Cause I'm really in the mood.
And now we're fighting.
Nut job.
He was convicted three years ago, based on his confession and the testimony of his friend.
Yes.
No offence, but as evidence goes, confessions are kind of nifty.
He was coerced and so was his friend.
They were each questioned for over 18 hours before they broke down and gave the police the statements they wanted.
Okay.
And the conviction was appealed? Yes.
This young lawyer here, from Shipley Winningham, last spring.
We've been waiting and waiting for the ruling.
Finally, I called Shipley to find out what was going on, only to learn the lawyer had left the firm and moved to Arizona.
And the law firm had no record of the appellate ruling, so I called the court, only to find out that they had denied the appeal.
Evidently, they sent notice to the firm, and some idiot in the mailroom sent it back, saying that no lawyer by that name worked there.
Anyway, I was told that we could file a second appeal.
That's why I'm here, in search of a new lawyer.
My son did not commit this crime.
He could never shoot another human being.
A mother knows these things.
I swear to you, he's innocent.
Mrs.
Jones Death penalty appeals are enormously complicated, and they take the kind of resources this office simply doesn't have.
We tried the big firm.
That's where he fell through the cracks.
Word is, you people care.
That you fight.
I need somebody to fight for my son.
It's not a pretext, I swear.
I need you.
Come on, Adam.
A shoe store law firm cannot carry a death penalty appeal alone.
We need help from a big firm to tag team.
My firm? Okay, I suppose it doesn't have to be your firm, but I'd like a big firm with an attorney I have a good shorthand with, and I suppose I'm desperate to get over this awkward bump, so that you and I can resume being good friends.
Despite the fact that you're still in love with me.
Yes, despite that.
Hey, remember in Law school, we'd always talk about you and me doing a big death penalty case one day, either with each other or against.
Adam, we talked about a lot of things.
Ouch.
Okay.
Look, I need help from a big firm.
And I need it fast.
The kid is due to be executed in a month.
Please.
I still don't get it.
He just moved off to Arizona and didn't tell me.
I didn't even know we lost, or This was supposed to be a big firm, too.
Like, they were supposed to be good.
It was a mix-up.
We've filed your second appeal, so that's done, but We need to talk about your case now.
The night of this murder.
I was in that area, but that's it.
The only thing I was guilty of was being too drunk.
Yeah.
There's some question as to whether you even remember what happened that night.
That's how the police finally convinced me that maybe I done it.
They kept hammering.
"You were drunk.
You blacked out.
" They told me they had witnesses, witnesses that seen me with a gun, witnesses that seen me shoot those two guys.
After 18 hours of interrogation, I couldn't see or think straight.
I started to believe maybe I done it.
You know, if they had all these witnesses.
Turns out, they lied.
There was no witnesses at all.
They made me believe I did something I didn't do.
I swear.
It's the same thing with Jason.
They brainwashed him, too.
All right, look, we're going to come back and get a full written statement from you.
We'll do the same with your friend Jason.
We'll also file a petition to test your DNA.
- In the meantime - Adam? Uh, the appeal was rejected.
What do you mean, rejected? We haven't even argued it yet.
We won't get to argue it.
The time to file has lapsed.
What's going on? Uh, the time to file your last appeal has run out.
What is it you expect me to do? Waive the filing deadline.
Why does that not surprise me? You changed your hair.
Oh, I cut it a little.
It looks great, it really does.
This was a mailroom screwup.
Clearly, our client shouldn't be prejudiced by it, especially when the penalty is death.
A little disproportionate for a clerical error, don't you think? Do you think my hair would look better shorter? Well, uh hey, come on.
Look, if you would've done your homework, hon, you would know that, before talking turkey, I like to dish a little.
So you and Thomas making babies yet? Uh, no, not yet.
I heard you got engaged.
What?! Uh, can we talk about this later? Oh, come on.
Throw me a bone, would you? You're engaged? What am I missing here? Oh, don't tell me.
Exes? Oh, my God.
I am so I'll tell you, if it's in the room, I will step in it every time.
Excuse me while I go outside and I just scrape off the bottom of my shoe.
Okay.
Back to the case, shall we? Awful.
You bring me that mailroom clerk, and I will figure out a way to fry his ass.
as for your client, there's nothing I can really do.
I don't have the power to waive filing deadlines.
You're not really listening to me, are you? You're still thinking about her getting married.
Yeah.
That's my bad there.
Sorry.
But if you are listening, as for the punishment being disproportionate, he is not getting executed for a clerical error.
It's because he shot two guys.
No, he didn't.
Yeah, well, he got convicted, so I have to assume and he's entitled to an appeal.
Which he got and lost.
I know.
I was there.
He's entitled to one more.
Adam, even if I were to support you here and I can't there's a reason for the filing deadlines.
I'll challenge this in federal court.
Okay, fine.
But you won't win in federal court.
How can you let a kid die because of a clerical error? Well, I would tell you, except we're going to federal court, so why ruin the surprise? Case number 32642, State of Ohio v.
Joshua Peyton Harry Korn for the defendant.
How we doing, judge? Long time, no see.
We'll waive reading, and if I may, I'd like to ask that we table this matter for now and perhaps we could all conference.
And how exactly will that look, counsel, making a special exception for a D.
A.
? The thing is, this is the D.
A.
who has served this community valiantly for a long time.
Understood, but he broke into a home and assaulted a woman.
Uh, the-the door was unlocked, judge.
And I never touched her.
Never touched her.
He had had an extremely tough week.
Yes, we have all heard about his week, but frankly, that just gives me more concern.
Your honour, Mr.
Peyton needs some counselling.
The likelihood is, he was having a small nervous breakdown, and that e became confused.
Confused? What, he thought that it was his house? His bed? His wife? Well, in a very strange way, yes.
He got slightly lost in the In the American dream, I suppose.
The American dream? Yes.
The one where people grow up to live in the homes they want, with the person they love.
You know that dream, your honour.
The one that never comes true.
I'm very fond of Josh Peyton.
He's been a mentor to me.
But this is a criminal act we have to take seriously.
Yes, but one we can nevertheless look at compassionately.
Mr.
Peyton, help me out here.
What happened last night? Your honour, I, uh, drove by the house that Uh, one that One that I could never afford on a D.
A.
's salary.
I entered; I really don't know why.
I found sleeping a beautiful woman, one who would likely never be impressed with a D.
A.
's salary.
And for one second, I let myself I don't know pretend.
The unfairness of it all.
We work so hard as public servants and not only is the public not grateful.
They don't even respect us, not really.
"What a sap.
"Poor guy he lost all his hair, "he busted his nuts, and for what? "Fighting for justice?" You kidding me? You kidding me? You see this suit? I had to borrow it just for this hearing.
You think I could ever afford a suit like this? I could never afford a suit like this.
- Josh - I thought that by appearing here in an expensive that-that I might be taken more seriously because money, that's respect in this world, isn't it? It's a lie, this suit.
A fraud upon the court, the suggestion that a bald sap with busted nuts could ever afford this.
Josh I can't wear it, judge.
I cannot cloak myself in this lie, this Disgusting deception - Josh.
- No, Harry, let me strip off this costume we dress up in as we act in this despicable charade we like to call justice.
Let me bare my freckly, pimply ass so that you and all the world can finally kiss it good-bye.
- No, I think I'll just waive, thanks.
- Question becomes, what is - Security, take that man out.
- the world gonna do after it .
no longer has my pimply ass - Let's go.
My bald head, and my busted nuts to kick around anymore? That's the question.
That's the question! Look, I have not yet completed my statement.
Obviously we didn't accomplish a quick dismissal.
What just happened it probably did contribute to our diminished capacity defence, so as silver linings go Wasn't diminished capacity, Harry, and I wasn't on meds.
Simple truth is, I'd had it.
This system We argue before juries made up of people too stupid to get out of jury duty.
They return verdicts that bear no connection to the law.
Look at our cases.
I had three guilty defendants dead to right.
Dead to right.
Jurors let 'em go because you made 'em feel pity.
You know I never used to be like this.
I I was In college, I was never an a I was the life of the party, truth be told.
People used to be excited to see me.
"Hey!" "Here comes Puck," they'd say.
"Hey, Puck baby.
" Puck baby? Now, I live alone, I'm divorced.
I'm this tightly wound ball of Never thought I'd end up like this.
Never.
This doesn't have to be an ending Puck.
You're what, pushing 50? I started over in my 60s.
You know what? It's better now.
You know what I always wanted to do? Sing.
Gee.
Just once, maybe before a small crowd.
Hear them applaud, you know, that's all, that's all.
All right, you know, or tell a joke.
Make somebody laugh.
You know, I've never made anybody laugh, ever, except at me.
Look, the D.
A.
said if the woman whose house you entered doesn't care about pressing charges, there's still a chance we can back out of this.
So my next step is to talk to her.
Sure.
Thanks, Harry.
You've been a good friend.
Okay, I better take this to the printer before we miss another deadline.
Why are you rewriting me? I'm not.
I'm just saying it a little clearer.
Sometimes your sentences get a little unwieldy.
And the paragraph that relates to his guilt or innocence that issue isn't relevant to this proceeding, so it's probably better to delete that section.
Good thing you asked me to help.
Don't be like that.
I'm just saying, some things are better left unsaid.
You know that more than anybody, right? And our baggage has finally arrived.
Adam, I was going to tell you, okay? I just didn't think now was a good I agree, I completely agree.
I always find when living a lie, better to stretch it out.
Oh oh, for God's sake.
Savour the How do you not tell me you're engaged, Rachel? Adam, it just happened! What, on the way to the courthouse, while? Three days ago.
And you didn't think that warranted a call? You couldn't even be bothered to text me? Oh, right, I'm going to text that.
"Adam, got engaged.
How about them buckeyes?" Not telling me is a lie! It's a lie by omission! Fine, so I guess when you said you just want to be friends, that was a lie, too, then, huh? I never said I just wanted to be friends! I said I'd-I'd settle for that, if that's all Okay, look, I was going to tell you, okay? But then you came begging for help on this case, and I certainly wasn't going to spring it in the middle of a I am sorry.
Okay, you know what? The brief is written.
I can cite-check it at my office and just take it to the printer, okay? Yeah, I should, I should just do that.
I'm sorry.
Your personal life is yours.
I know this.
It just hurts.
So, what, he just proposed? Just like that? No, um I proposed.
I can't.
I thought I could, I wanted to, but I'm not ready to be friends with you yet.
It's just too I mean, who's kidding who? I still love you too much.
Am I happy that you're happy? Yes.
Okay, no.
I I wish you were as miserable as I am.
I wish you went home and cried at night like I At least we could share that.
After this case, we need to lose contact for a while.
Let's get through this case and then just okay? How we doing? Good.
Good.
Good.
Good.
What's this? This is my letter of resignation.
This isn't working out for me.
I'm sorry.
Jenna, you're an at-will employee.
You don't need to tender a letter of resignation.
But now that you have, I reject it.
Go back to work.
My private and professional lives are in conflict.
Jenna, there are worse things in life than having a personal problem.
Like having to listen to somebody else's.
Now get back to work.
What the hell is wrong with you? I'm fine.
Tough case, that's all.
I'm fine.
Oh, balls.
All right, look at me, all of you.
This is what happens when you let love into the workplace.
Now, snap out of it.
All of you.
Oh, God.
Steal you a second, Harry? No, I'm busy.
Listen, that black-tie trial lawyer's gig tonight it's kind of a Well, they're a bit stuffy, these guys.
They don't really like it when I show up with my nonsense, with my bravado, with My hookers.
I was wondering if you'd be my date.
We'll have some laughs, Harry.
We always do.
Come on, there are worse things than going to a gala with Tommy Jay.
Name three.
I wasn't even planning on going to this stupid gala, Tommy.
They kind of shun me.
It's all envy, I know.
It doesn't hurt.
It's just I think the whole thing would be a little more fun with someone to talk to.
Please? Knock-knock.
How you doing? I'm fine.
What's the expression? "Every knock is a meat-hook up the ass" I'm fine.
Is there anything I can do? Well, I'd tell you, Kim, but that's not the reason you're here, is it? I mean, this makes, what, twice you've come into my office in the last four years to say "how you doing"? What's that, huh? What's that? You're not alone.
I'm a traffic accident.
What's not to slow down for? Been a long line at my door today.
The only thing different about you is that you're not one to take delight in somebody else's misery, so I'm figuring you must be here for something real.
The Brian Jones case.
Is he guilty? Of course he's guilty.
You argued it; You should know.
Yeah, I argued the appeal, you did the trial.
Puck, level with me, will you? All the evidence came from an interrogation room.
Kim you know that I would never, ever try somebody for murder if I were not convinced that he or she did the crime.
Yes, and I also know that in the heat of the moment, we all convince ourselves as to the merits of our cases, and then as time passes, upon reflection Upon reflection.
Brian Jones shot those two guys.
He was the one with motive; He was the one with opportunity; He had a prior history of violence.
He did it.
Okay.
You okay, Puck? I'll be fine.
Thank you.
Well, for what it's worth, I'm really sorry I wasn't around, you know? To see you get naked in court.
Another time.
Take care.
I will.
For the purpose of this hearing, the issue is all about filing deadlines.
So don't expect us to devote much time arguing your innocence, though obviously, we'll be suggesting that possibility as backdrop.
It'd be good for you to join.
Having mothers present is always a plus.
Don't worry about me; I'll be there.
Okay, look, this is not gonna be easy.
One would think, a clerical error, they'd be happy to fix it one would be wrong.
We'll have a suit sent over for you to wear.
Other than that we'll see you in court, okay? Malcolm.
I'm really sorry.
I do things at the beginning of every relationship that I go crazy.
I I challenge, if not dare the person to leave me.
Why? I don't know, to test it, maybe? I have serious abandonment issues my parents got divorced, and I just have a hard time trusting people.
Did I completely drive you away? Are you convinced that I'm nuts? Well I am convinced you're nuts.
But I'm not going anywhere.
Really? I like nuts.
I mean, you're nuts.
You're adorable and unbelievably honest Okay, are you just being nice now? A little.
Oh, for God's sake, get a room.
So we're all kissy-kissy, happy-happy again? Life sometimes works out after all.
Oh, that woman called.
The one whose bed Josh Peyton climbed into.
She did? She's coming in here.
And those are the dresses.
Pick the one you like and I'll have it altered.
What do I want with a dress? The gala.
I'm not going to that.
Yes, you are.
No, I'm not.
Harry, when a friend needs you, you answer the call.
Now, be quiet and pick a dress.
Look, Jenna, I don't really think that counted since Harry walked in on it.
What are you talking about? Oh, make me puke.
Ms.
Korn, he was on my bed.
I realize this, but the thing is, he was having a slight nervous breakdown of sorts.
- This is a man who - Are you saying it's my call as to whether he gets prosecuted? No, it's not.
I don't mean to put that on you.
What I'm saying is, both sides are looking for the most compassionate resolution.
But we, of course, have to be sympathetic to the fact that there's another victim in all this.
I mean, the primary victim, which is you.
If you felt that this was a predator in your bed, that says one thing.
But if you sensed that this man was more of a patient looking for help, that says another.
Look for this judge to be extremely active.
I know.
The book on her Adam, I know the book.
All rise.
The Great State of Ohio v.
Brian Jones.
Busy day, folks.
Let's hear from the petitioner.
Good morning, your honour.
Rachel Miller appearing for the petitioner, Brian Jones.
Are you saying that your client wasn't notified of the appellate court's decision? Not sufficiently notified, he It was mailed to his trial attorney.
Who left the law firm.
The letter was returned unopened.
The court isn't required to insure actual notice, is it? Our petition is that once the letter was returned unopened, the clerk's office should have then called the law firm to inquire so you're trying to change the rules and shift the burden to the clerk's office? How about just when the defendant is going to be killed? Maybe in those cases, we can make it look like we care.
I can do without the tone.
I'll give you the point.
What about it, Ms.
Mendelsohn? You gonna execute this kid? Is the clerk's office too burdened to provide actual notice? In an ideal world, maybe.
But who lives in that one? Certainly not us.
We have over a hundred thousand cases currently on appeal in Ohio.
They come with automatic appeals and then, if that doesn't work out, they get another appeal.
And it goes on and on and on and on.
It's like the old joke: If you want to live forever in.
America's criminal justice system, just get yourself sentenced to death.
Yeah, clever.
But it doesn't help me.
We don't guarantee fairness, judge.
All we promise is due process.
Mr.
Jones got that.
And you can rest easy with that? We are not denying Mr.
Jones a trial.
He got one.
We're not denying Mr.
Jones an appeal.
He got one.
He lost both.
Now, because this is a capital case, he got a second bite.
He missed the deadline.
We follow rules.
If we can't count on the rules to be followed, our system, perilously close to paralysis already, simply won't work, and nobody gets justice.
Okay, you know what, Kim? What, are we getting personal now? Uh, yes.
When a defendant is going to be executed, in part because some clerk in some mailroom wrongly stamped a letter "Return to "sender," it is offensive.
There is a A human being sitting in this chair, and you're gonna exalt a filing screwup over his life? I find that offensive.
I take it personally.
Yes, I do.
That was good.
In these two chairs sit two other lives that Wait.
They're not here.
I guess they couldn't make it.
I guess they're dead.
I see Mark Engle's widow sitting over there.
I see Joel Smoller's widow and his two children.
They're here.
But the husbands? The father? Not here.
Shot dead by your human being.
And the fact that these family members can never get closure I find that offensive.
I take that personally.
And you want to know the worst thing? There are so many more empty chairs.
There are so many more widows and children who want to put an end to their personal agonies.
And if we change the rules here, if we give this convicted murderer, who had his trial, had his appeal, if we arbitrarily give him a do-over, then what? The floodgates will open.
My office will be filled with defence attorneys before I can even get back there.
Suppose you're wrong.
Suppose he didn't do it.
The evidence is sketchy, at best.
Two possibly coerced statements This proceeding is not about whether Suppose you're wrong.
Oh, well, a rule's a rule; Kill him? Really? The reason we have all the checks and appeals double appeals the reason we prolong the process at the expense of the victims Is because of the possibility that we might execute the wrong person.
We do it a lot.
It's one thing to do it by mistake, it's another to do it by an utterly preventable mistake and it's something else altogether that we would so blithely do it.
Prioritizing administrative expedience over a person's life, possibly an innocent life? Our system can't be about that.
It just can't be.
A-and if so For God's sake, Brian Jones had a pro Bono lawyer at trial who didn't interview witnesses, he didn't try to suppress the core statements he was a stumbling, bumbling hack.
His appellate attorney then abandoned him; Then some stupid mailroom clerk A pile of incompetence upon incompetence None of which was his.
And we're going to kill him? That can't be.
It simply can't be.
You were really good, Adam.
Really good.
So were you.
So, how long before we hear, do you think? Well, assuming they give us notice You two make quite the team, you know that? I do have to say, seeing your passion in there it made me just Can I ask you something? Did you propose as a kind of pre-emptive strike of sorts? Excuse me? To prevent a relapse with you? Did you? Adam, don't Is that what you think? Did you? No.
So, you'll, uh You'll let me know when we When we hear something? I'll call.
Okay.
Okay.
Bye.
Bye.
Felony trespassing.
That's the best I can do.
Misdemeanour trespassing.
That would draw so much scrutiny, Josh.
You don't want that.
Look suspended sentence, no time.
What more could you ask for? We'll take it.
Well, don't I get a say? You do.
He'll take it.
Thank you, Kathryn.
Just promise me you'll keep your clothes on and stay out of other people's houses.
Listen, I was thinking I'd go to the gala tonight.
You know, get back in the saddle, let everybody know I'm on my way back.
Really? Yeah, and get all the glad-handing out of the way.
And anyway, you want to join me, be my date? Oh, I seems I already have a date.
Really? Uh, anybody I know? Tommy Jefferson.
Funny.
Serious? You're going with that banana? Well, he's a nice banana.
Harry.
I knew you'd be good, but Adam was better than I thought.
Is he here? I don't know.
Come on, you didn't ask if he was coming? Uh, no, I-I didn't, actually, which is, um Which might have been a good idea.
Hey, Thomas.
Hi, Kim.
Kim.
Tommy.
Harry.
Okay, I just got to say this.
You look sensational.
You really know how to make a date feel special.
Hello.
Excuse me? Okay.
Thank you.
When did she rule? I just got the call.
I'm sorry, Rachel.
I mean, part of me obviously isn't.
I believe he's guilty.
I know these are tough ones to lose.
You okay? Yeah.
Uh, uh, could I have your attention? Hi, uh, my name is Josh Peyton.
Some of you know me as Puck, others as an overly-zealous D.
A.
What the hell is he doing? Take it off, Puck! What? I've come up here not to interrupt your evening, but, oh, no.
- Go, Puck.
- This guy is crazy.
I, uh I-I wanted to sing a song.
It's a it's a song that I love.
And, um Well, I've actually been singing it in the privacy of my own home, where I live alone, but I'd like to sing it in public, if I may.
For you.
Is it okay if I call you mine? just for a time and I will be just fine if I know that you know that I'm wanting, needing your love if I ask of you is it all right if I ask you to hold me tight through a cold, dark night 'cause there may be a cloudy day in sight and I need you okay? Yeah.
Listen, um, we'll file for cert with the Supreme Court and I will draft it myself.
The Supreme Court Scalia said even proof of actual innocence isn't grounds for a new trial.
The Supreme Court is That was a minority opinion.
We will file for cert tomorrow.
What, you're just gonna give up? That isn't you.
I just can't take Hey.
Hey.
This isn't over, okay? We just keep fighting; It's what we do.
Okay.
I'll be okay.
It's, uh Been a day.
You're not the only one who's had a day, all right? I'm sorry; I know I've put you through a lot more than you need to be put through.
Listen, um I-I did propose, maybe in part, you know, I thought before I do something really stupid, I better just I mean, I love him, Adam.
I really do.
Rachel, you don't need to put a ribbon on it; We'll still be friends I'm trying to tell you that I love you more, you dope.
What? I'm sorry.
I didn't come in here to say that.
It's just that you're just such a A dope.
Yeah.
- Oh, that was,uh - Stupid.
Yeah.
Oh, holy cow.
Uh, Harry.
What the? Is everybody kissing everybody? I was, uh, just, uh, leaving.
I have to go take care of something.
Okay.
Bye.
Uh, bye.
Harry.
Are you two back together? I have no idea.
Why didn't you come to the gala after shaming me into it? I just wasn't up to it.
Sorry.
I heard about your case.
I had this image of you back here brooding.
Not with a brood mare, but How did they let that kid go to his death when? Look, Adam, cases are decided on technicalities all the time.
Murderers are released on technicalities.
We take our rules I heard you were good in court.
Not good enough.
Look at me.
The thing you need to remember as much as this job sometimes sucks, even on your worst days, it beats the hell out of patent law.
Remember the day we started? Who would ever have thought we'd actually be a real law firm? I'm proud of you, Adam.
I know I don't say that enough.
You're a good man and a good lawyer.
You make me proud.
Still a pain in the ass.
Couldn't leave it at proud.
I'm just saying Yeah, yeah.
How was the gala, anyway? It was okay.
My new friend Puck sang.
Peyton sang? He was good.
Naked? Clothes on.

He left with somebody else.
