The Dreadful Doll

1
[♪♪♪]
It sounded like
static to me, Dad.
Can we hear it again?
DR. QUEST: Yes.
He's making another pass.
Listen carefully, now.
You should know this one.
Here he comes.
[CHIRPING]
Sounds like a car that
needs a grease job.
Right, Hadji?
Or a very squeaky door.
[BURBLING]
Did you recognize
that one, boys?
That was a bottle-nose dolphin.
A porpoise.
Here comes one we haven't had.
Listen.
[BARKING]
Quiet, now.
Listen.
[LIPS SMACKING]
[LIPS SMACKING]
Did you hear it?
JONNY: Sure did.
Sounds like you're
not alone down there.
[DR. QUEST LAUGHING]
I think it's an
affectionate fish.
Or maybe a mermaid, yes?
Thank you.
If we need a kissing
fish, we'll call you.
Hey, Race, we're
going down to the bell.
We can make the
sound of the fishes, too.
[BARKING]
Not this time, Bandit.
Oh, Race, don't tell
Dad where we are,
okay?
Okay, boys.
[SPLASHING]
[GURGLING]
[BOYS GURGLING]
[GURGLING INCREASES IN VOLUME]
Race?
I've spotted two oddball fish.
Yeah, I had a feeling you would.
Guess I've had
it for today, Race.
Start her up.
Right you are.
[♪♪♪]
[LAUGHING]
But we both saw it, Dad.
HADJI: That is right.
We did truly see it.
Are you sure, Jonny?
The light under the water
can play funny tricks
on your eyes at times.
It's just possible
you saw a whale.
But, Dad, honest,
I know the difference
between a whale and a sub.
And Hadji and I both
saw the same thing.
That is right.
[MOTORBOAT APPROACHING]
Someone's coming this way.
Who could it be?
No one knows we're here.
You are Dr. Quest?
Yes.
Come quickly.
It is an emergency.
You say you are
Phillipe Lor's foreman?
Sí, señor,
and his daughter,
Denise, is sick
From voodoo!
Voodoo? On Tonego Island?
Sí, señor,
it is a terrible thing!
[IN FRENCH ACCENT]
Yes, Dr. Quest.
First, they sent the warning,
the Suga Doll.
Then the spell came over her.
The devils have struck at me
through my daughter.
Who do you think is responsible?
Korbay
For years, a worthless man.
Suddenly, overnight,
this Korbay has acquired
these voodoo powers.
Now he is feared
as a witch doctor.
What's behind all this?
I do not know.
The other planters
have left the island,
but I have refused to go.
There are only ourselves
and Alvero left,
and he, too, refuses
to be frightened.
But who knows?
Only today Alvero
received a warning,
a Suga Doll.
This is no spell, Phillipe.
Your daughter's been drugged.
I'll go back to the boat
and check my books.
Perhaps I can
prepare an antidote.
In the meantime,
watch her closely
so no more harm can be done.
I will watch her myself.
Not once will I take
my eyes from her
until you return.
And now, Alvero
will drive you back.
[DISTANT DRUMMING]
Those cursed drums!
Every day, every
night, all night.
Then the natives
disappear into the jungle.
And this happens every night?
Yes.
There is nothing we can do.
Alvero, the car.
Alvero, it is late! Dr. Quest
Just a moment.
[DRUMMING CONTINUES]
I thought so.
He's been drugged too,
apparently, by means
of this tiny blow-gun dart.
Permit me to borrow your car.
With this sample,
I'll prepare an antidote
and return as
quickly as possible.
Certainly, Dr. Quest.
I will expect you.
Poor Alvero.
He too, suffers
because I will not be driven
from my home of 25 years.
And that's the story.
What do you make of it, Dad?
I'm not sure, Jonny.
All I know is that
someone is using a drug
to cast what the natives think
as a voodoo spell,
and I've got to
find the antidote.
You think this kook, Korbay,
could give us some answers?
I'm sure he could.
Who is it?
Stop! Race, cut him off!
RACE: All right, you, hold it!
[SPLASHING]
Did you get him?
I saw somebody dive
off the boat, Doctor,
but he vanished.
Did you get a good look at him?
No, I didn't.
I wonder what he wanted.
[DOOR OPENS]
There's your answer, Dr. Quest.
He wanted to
leave you a warning.
DR. QUEST: The Suga Doll, huh?
Not a very flattering likeness.
JONNY: Hey, Dad,
what's all the noise about?
DR. QUEST: Nothing.
Go back to bed.
Everything's all right.
Okay, goodnight.
You think they'll be back?
Not tonight. Why not, Doctor?
They'll wait till tomorrow
to see if we're still here.
Apparently, we're
getting in somebody's way.
When did Dad leave, Race?
Very early,
before you two were awake.
Gosh, we missed
all the excitement.
Maybe.
But you boys keep
your eyes peeled today.
Don't let anyone
get near the boat.
Do you hear?
Yes, sir. Yes, sir.
Maybe you can get Bandit
to quit sleeping so much
and give you a hand.
[SNORING]
JONNY: Bandit.
Oh, come on, Bandit,
you've got to stand guard.
[BARKING]
RACE: Now, there's a real alert,
wide-awake watchdog.
Don't worry.
Bandit's a good watchdog.
Very good I think.
If he can stay awake, that is.
You believe we saw a
submarine yesterday,
don't you, Race?
Yes, I do, Jonny.
There may be some connection
between what you saw
and what's been happening
on the island.
You know where to look, Race?
Under the rocks. I'll find it.
Now, if I'm gone too
long, notify your father.
Okay.
Be careful, Race.
DR. QUEST: Denise?
PHILIPPE: Look, her eyes!
She hears.
The antidote is working.
Can you hear me?
Oui, Papa.
She'll come out of it quickly,
just as Alvero did.
I can never repay
you, Dr. Quest.
Stay with her.
In the meantime,
I'd like to borrow Alvero.
We're going to pay
Korbay a little visit.
All right, pal,
climb up out of there.
[SINGING]
Voodoo strong medicine!
You cannot stop it.
I have already
stopped it, Korbay.
Cannot stop voodoo.
[SINGING]
I don't believe in
voodoo, Korbay,
especially yours.
I've come to prove it.
Alvero.
You see?
Your voodoo did not
affect Alvero.
My voodoo still strong.
No, Korbay.
I have returned Alvero
to consciousness.
I know about your little
darts dipped in a drug.
You're a fake.
No one will believe you.
They fear Korbay and the voodoo.
They will not fear
when I tell them
what you have done.
Those you have put to sleep,
their families,
they will kill you when
the truth is known.
What do you want?
There will be no
more voodoo drums,
no more trances.
You will tell me
what is behind all this.
I will think on this.
You haven't much time.
You have only until sunset.
Then I will return.
I will think too, of this.
Korbay calls.
Korbay calls.
Listen, Quest just left.
Did you hear him?
MAN: I heard.
KORBAY: What am I to do?
Nothing.
You will send the
workers tonight, as usual.
Is that clear?
It is clear.
I'll handle Quest.
Good thing you
dropped in after all, pal.
Looks like I can use
you to stop Quest.
Holding me won't stop Dr. Quest.
We'll see, pal.
We'll see.
Hurry, Hadji. It's
been two hours.
Race may be in trouble.
I am ready, Jonny.
You guard the boat, Bandit.
[BARKING]
Come on, let's go.
Korbay.
KORBAY: I am here.
Get those drums started.
All is ready.
Then get down here
and guard this prisoner.
I'm paying a visit to Dr. Quest.
[DISTANT DRUMMING BEGINS]
All right, you
guys, let's move it.
Get to work. You hear?
[MACHINERY POWERING UP]
I get it.
The drums cover the sound
of those jackhammers.
You're pretty sharp.
What are you building?
Take a look.
I'm being paid a lot of dough
to build a secret
sub and arms base.
Yeah? By whom?
I never ask questions
when money talks.
Keep an eye on him, Korbay.
I'm gonna make sure
Quest doesn't talk.
And what about
the two small ones?
Don't worry
I'll shut them up, too.
[GRUNTING] With a little luck,
I may be able to
get these ropes off.
There, that did it.
Now, if I can just
get my hands on
Mr. Voodoo out there
[SNORING]
Look, there's a guard
in front of that shack.
Maybe Race is in it.
Okay, Hadji, swim
over to the other side
and try to draw him off.
Good idea.
Then you can let Race out.
Come on, let's go.
Okay. Operation rescue.
[GROWLING]
[BARKING]
Quiet, you mutt.
All we're gonna do
is give Dr. Quest a surprise
welcome-home party.
MAN: Hey, there's
only two of them.
Wonder where the kids are.
Ah, that's no problem.
I'll take care of them later.
Here we go.
Bombs away.
Huh? What was that?
I think it worked.
Something is not right.
Careful, Jonny.
Shh
I'll have you out of there
as soon as I get this plank off.
Good boy.
Now, let's take care
of Mr. Gruesome.
Who is there?
Down, Jonny.
He's looking this way.
I hope Hadji keeps
his head down, too.
[CLANG]
Someone is here.
Ah, it is one of the small ones.
I will take care of him.
That witch doctor's
asking for it.
Fire one!
RACE: Bull's-eye!
[THUD]
Keep your fingers
crossed, fellas,
and hope we make it
through that underwater tunnel.
We've got to get
back to the boat
and stop Harden.
Let's go.
HARDEN: Don't keep
me waiting, Quest.
You and your friend
are coming with me,
so get your scuba gear on.
Where are the boys?
What have you done with them?
Don't worry about them.
You won't be seeing
anybody again.
Now, get going.
I haven't got all day.
How are we doing, Jonny?
Right on course, Race.
We're going through
the tunnel now.
Easy
Easy I see light!
We're almost out.
Good.
This submarine carries
two small torpedoes.
We'll fire them and
close the tunnel for keeps.
Harden will kill you for this.
Harden's killing days
are just about over.
Now, this ought
to be far enough.
Now, hang on tight.
When the torpedoes
hit the roof of that tunnel,
there'll be a shock wave.
Take your last look
at daylight, boys,
and then jump in,
and no tricks,
or you'll get a
spear in the back.
Hang on.
[EXPLOSION]
What was that?
Good work, Alvero.
[EXPLOSION]
What will happen to
Harden and Korbay now?
That's up to your
local government,
Monsieur Lor.
You can be sure
of one thing, though.
And what is that?
DR. QUEST: You'll
have no more voodoo.
Now the islanders can
go back to their plantations.
And we can get
back to our project.
Unless, of course,
Jonny has other plans.
I think you are
both just wonderful
to have rescued Race as you did.
You are so, so brave.
Oh
And I have something
for both of you.
Oh, for crying out loud.
Oh, no.
I think it is not
good to be brave.
Oh, you are both so
wonderful, so brave,
I am going to let
you each kiss me.
What is the matter? Are
you afraid to kiss me?
I'm afraid you'll have to wait
about 10 years
for them to have that
kind of courage, Denise.
Yeah, see you in
10 years, Denise.
It's a date.
[BARKING]
[ALL LAUGHING]
