The Brave (2017) s01e12 Episode Script
Close to Home
1 Three days ago, an Ohio-class submarine on patrol in the Atlantic went dark for 123 seconds.
No communication, no navigation.
When it came back online, its course had been altered.
When we combed the sub's systems, we found code that didn't belong there.
You mean someone took control of one of our nuclear submarines remotely? [DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
This was a world-class hack.
Turns out the person responsible was a 16-year-old American girl.
Hey.
You ready? Dad, I'm I'm really sorry.
I didn't mean for things to get this out of hand.
It's okay.
It's okay.
There's nothing to worry about.
All we have to do is get to the base, and they'll sort it out.
- Okay.
- All right, grab your bag.
CIA located the girl in Adana, Turkey.
Turns out her father is an IT contractor at Incirlik Air Base.
We don't believe that the girl had malicious intent.
However, her abilities in the wrong hands pose a grave threat.
We need to bring her home immediately.
Copy that.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
Dad, if we have nothing to worry about, then why are you in such a rush? [ELECTRICITY BUZZING.]
- Dad? - It's just old wiring.
- Dad? Dad, what's going on? - Come on.
Come on.
Shh, shh.
[DOOR CREAKS.]
[FOOTSTEPS TAPPING.]
- Dad - Go back to the apartment.
- Dad? Dad, what's going on? - Go, now, now! Verina, wait.
Listen to me.
I want you to go out the window, down the drain, like you do when you sneak out to see Esma.
- You know about that? - I do.
I don't care.
Go.
Go.
Run.
Run! [OMINOUS MUSIC.]
- [DOOR BANGS OPEN.]
- [GRUNTS.]
All right, Command, power's out.
Doesn't seem like an accident.
Okay, Preach, Amir, you guys stay here and watch for squirters.
Jaz, McG, you're with me.
[SPEAKING TURKISH.]
I don't like this.
You think someone got here first? Better hope not.
Command, I got evidence of a break-in.
Okay, that's not good.
Preach, Amir, I want you to lock down that lobby.
Nobody leaves this building.
[PEOPLE SPEAKING TURKISH.]
[TENSE MUSIC.]
All right, we got blood on the floor, fresh tracks.
Top, upstairs hallway.
Two in the chest, one in the head.
All right, Command, father's dead.
Got a professional hit.
There's no sign of the daughter.
You two sweep this place quick, all right? I want to be out of here before the authorities catch wind of this.
- All right, copy.
- Copy.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, listen.
All right, let's line everybody up here.
Let's see what we got, come on.
Sir, against the wall, let's go.
Line 'em up.
Upstairs sliding door's unlocked.
The girl could have climbed down using the drain.
All right, Command, you hear that? Pulling up local CCTV footage now.
If she fled on foot, we'll see her in one of these cameras.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
Hey, my man, you speak English? You don't know.
All right, what's your name? - Firat.
- Firat.
Okay, do you live here in this building, Firat? - Me? - Yeah.
- No.
- All right, do me a favor.
Turn around.
All right.
Preach! Got a gun.
That's a pretty high-end Glock you got there, no? It's not mine, I swear.
I never seen it before.
- Well, missing a few rounds.
- The gun's not mine.
All right, Command, I've got a Firat Evgin.
- 23 - Evgin! 23, Turkish national.
Says he lives across town.
- [GROANS.]
- Sir, are you all right? Dalton, Firat Evgin has a record, but it looks like it's mostly robberies.
Not exactly the résumé of a guy you'd send to do a job like this.
Top, we have a problem here.
Looks like he's having some attack or something.
Okay.
Okay, all right.
All right, McG, are you on your way down here? Just finishing up.
Why? I don't have time to wait on McGuire.
Just cut him loose, Amir.
Get him out of here.
- Sir, you can go.
- Don't do that.
Let me see that man's face.
Hey! Get back here.
Right over here.
You know, I could have actually been dying.
Dalton, you need to button that man up, and I mean airtight.
No one can know that you found him.
I will be wheels up and en route to you within the hour.
Hold on, you're heading to me? What about the girl? This man is more dangerous than the girl.
The man you're looking at is Alex Hoffman, decorated field officer gone rogue.
Guilty of more crimes than I can count and dead for the last nine years.
Or so I thought.
Hello, P.
[EXPLOSION.]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
[SOFT PIANO MUSIC PLAYING.]
Betts never recorded me.
It's why I liked him.
It's why I trusted him.
Betts got fired.
And I do like recording these conversations.
You want a record of our sins? I want a record of our success.
Okay, the real reason the real reason I like recording is because no matter how good my handwriting is, sometimes details get missed.
Sounds like you need to go to secretarial school.
I'm not talking about words or names.
I'm talking about inflections.
I'm talking about pauses.
I'm talking about all the ways an agent like you communicates things you aren't even aware you know.
Listen, I'm not some kid fresh out of the farm.
And I'm not some second-tier handler.
You're good, Alex.
From everything I've read, you're pretty much the most effective operative we have out there.
Which means you act on your instinct as much as your intellect.
You're a born liar.
- And a master manipulator.
- Now you're just being nice.
You're also your own worst enemy.
I read over Betts' notes.
I found ten connections he missed.
I wasn't even trying.
Yeah, well, no wonder old Betts got fired.
My point is, the way you tell me things could be as important as the information itself.
Let's say you pause in the middle of a sentence.
Could be you're searching for a detail, or it could be your subconscious trying to convey something to me that even you can't put your fingers on.
You gonna be my handler or my shrink? Both.
And more.
I'm your partner.
I'm your protector.
I'm your parent and your priest.
Yeah.
They said you were good.
Smart, ambitious.
Keep me on my toes and make me better.
Yeah, I think this is gonna work.
Good.
Me too.
Wasn't on? What we do goes on the record.
How we do it goes on at my discretion.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
Top, what's going on? One minute, we're on the hunt for a misguided kid.
The next, we're smuggling someone onto our base.
If you can't tell us, do you at least know what's going on? No, I don't, but I'm gonna find out.
So in the meantime, you guys take the first watch outside.
Remember, nobody comes in here unless I say so.
Right here.
See what you got in here.
[EXHALES HEAVILY.]
Okay.
Two Glock 19s, extended mags, bunch of passports, foreign currency.
Kenya, Iran, South Africa, Uganda, Germany.
This guy's no Boy Scout.
[PHONE RINGING.]
- Any problems? - Oh, you mean besides being completely in the dark? Yeah, we got him stashed at base.
Nobody saw us bring him in.
You're gonna have to trust me that the less you know about Hoffman, the better.
Okay, but what about the girl? Clearly, this is no coincidence that he was there.
No, I don't think it is, which is why I wanted him buttoned up.
So then should we lean on him? Waste of time.
He's trained.
- Yeah, but so are we.
- Damn it, Adam.
You keep one eye on Hoffman, and otherwise do not engage.
Noah and Hannah are working on finding Verina.
Interface with them.
Bringing her home safely is still a matter of national security.
Okay, so then at least let me know who this guy is.
He is radioactive.
And his being alive When the dust settles, I don't want you among the ruins.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
- All right, Preach, McG.
- Yeah.
Want you to clean out this cage.
All right, Noah, Hannah, go to private channel.
Go ahead, Captain.
Hey, did, uh has Patricia said anything to you? No.
She just asked us to keep quiet about what we saw, stay focused on finding Verina.
Do you think she's in trouble? I don't know.
I could call my friends at Langley, have them do some digging.
No, I got a guy here who knows his way around a computer.
I'll let him do the digging.
You guys just focus on finding Verina.
Roger that.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
[INDISTINCT CHATTER.]
.
I can help you find her.
Seriously, Adam, you don't want to gag me again.
That's not the right play.
That's good.
You didn't take the bait, ask me how I know your names all your names, for that matter.
Right, Zeke? I'm serious about Verina.
You're looking at it all wrong.
You're looking at it like a hero.
You're acting like you need to save her.
You don't.
You need to do your job, Captain.
[LAUGHS.]
Is that right? Can you help me do that? Help me do my job? Why should I listen to you? - Because I'm good.
- Mm.
Good enough to fake my own death.
Good enough that Patricia's rushing here to deal with me.
You're acting like your mission is to save the girl.
It's not.
The girl's meaningless.
Your mission is to find the code, the hack.
[GASPS.]
Hackers are just like the rest of us.
They back things up.
Not online but on air-gapped computers and thumb drives.
That's what I was looking for when you all rode in on your white horses.
So you're not denying that you killed the girl's father? I'm telling you to go to the apartment, search and find the code, protect your country.
That's your job, right? Protect your country at all costs? Or am I dealing with a bunch of Boy Scouts? [LAUGHS.]
This is incredible! It's incredible.
You know that, right? - - Really? I think it's too salty.
Seriously.
The DS can use this intel to make a much harder stance in the region.
I mean, we are talking about global impact.
Well, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then.
[LAUGHS.]
All right, how did you get the information? Don't know why I didn't come That's unusual you asking me how.
You don't trust me? I'm asking 'cause I'm impressed.
Wished that I could fly away Do you get lonely? - Alex.
- No, I'm serious.
You're a single mother.
You do this job.
Can't exactly tell anyone about it.
You're smarter than any man you ever met.
God knows they love that.
As you were saying about the information? Uh the minister of defense has a weakness.
- Women? - Woman.
His wife.
Worships her, tells her everything.
Strangest power dynamic I've ever seen.
Anyway, she's his weakness.
Antiques are hers.
So I recruited the best antique dealer in Beijing.
And I taught him how to ask without asking.
Hmm.
And voilà .
Joint chiefs get a peek behind the Chinese curtain.
Hmm.
If the dealer flips? I don't deal with him directly.
It's all through cutouts.
So if he gets caught or grows a conscience, it's him that'll be killed, not me.
Does that bother you? Omelet, eggs.
Hmm.
Does that bother you, P? No.
He knows what he's doing.
I've been waiting for someone like you.
Like a partner, a real partner.
Someone who gets what it's like, who understands how many lives are at stake.
With me in the field and you in D.
C.
, it's I can make you a star, P.
I already am a star, Alex.
Something has to make you run I do get lonely.
I don't know why I didn't come I feel as empty as a drum I don't know why I didn't come You know what we are? We are fellow travelers.
I don't know why I didn't come Where are we going? Have you ever seen a file that redacted? No.
No, they only do this when they want to pretend like you never existed but you've done too much damage for them to get away with that.
Do you believe that if someone repents at the last moment of his life that all his sins are forgiven? I do.
I also think if you wait around for the end of your life, you're kinda missing the point entirely.
One atones here in the present to enjoy a better future here.
Now, contrary to popular belief, scripture's not a how-to for getting into some kind of promised land in the afterlife.
It's a how-to for living here more abundantly.
I like it.
It's good you have a family.
Men like you should have a family.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
You rotate home soon, right? At your age, hmm, next year may be your last.
Wait.
Isn't there a superstition about that, about not talking about the fact that you're near the end? Oops, I just broke it.
There's a superstition for just about everything under the sun.
- Luckily, I'm not superstitious.
- I am.
I'm afraid I doomed you now, Preach.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
Okay, we're outside Verina's place.
We're getting ready to send Amir in here.
And remember to give us a heads-up if real Army CID shows up.
It's one thing to be spoofing our own people.
It'll be ten times worse to get caught doing it.
Will do, Dalton.
Amir, can you give us a broadcast test, please? Okay, looks like we're working.
Amir, proceed at your discretion.
Good luck.
Richard Hedison, Army CID.
Victim was doing some IT work for us.
We have to do our own proprietary sweep.
I was wondering when you would show up.
We're here now.
[SPEAKING TURKISH.]
- Ooh, he's good, isn't he? - Hmm.
Yeah, he is.
I just hope there's something in there for him to find.
[MEN SPEAKING TURKISH.]
Salaam.
Whoever this Hoffman guy is, he's got Patricia spooked like I've never seen.
In the apartment, searching Verina's alcove.
All right, Amir, we have a limited window to locate Verina's code.
Send back as much as you can.
Try to keep a low profile.
There's way too many people here.
This uniform is like a flashing neon sign.
And it's about to get a hell of a lot brighter 'cause you got real Army CID en route, and they are three minutes out.
Yeah, but I haven't found anything yet.
Okay, Amir, you got to get out of there.
We don't want this blowing back on us.
I'm looking at one of those Chinese puzzle boxes.
- Perfect hiding spot? - No, negative.
Amir, in case you forgot, there's only one way in and there's one way out, which means if the realies show up, then you got to walk right past them.
Hannah, tell me what you see.
Hold on.
Hold on.
Amir, you're right.
There is something inside.
There must be a hidden compartment.
Don't suppose your gadget can tell me how to open this.
[INDISTINCT POLICE RADIO CHATTER.]
Army CID pulling up, two o'clock.
Amir, we're running out of time here.
You need to solve that puzzle.
Got it.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
I don't know what everyone was worried about.
I'm coming out.
[SPEAKING TURKISH.]
That thing better be worth it.
It's not the hack.
It's her diary.
You got to be kidding me.
Just your typical teenage diary.
Music, crushes, that sort of thing.
No bits of source code or programming notes.
Not the secrets we're looking for.
It's got to be there, though.
I don't want to sound negative, but we're not gonna get very far stopping a hack with some teenager's diary.
No, but we might find the teenager.
There's a lot of mentions in this dairy about a girlfriend, Esma.
How Verina felt guilty about hiding her from her dad.
Yeah, but no record of calls to an Esma from Verina's cell phone.
And no mention of an Esma anywhere in our write-up of her.
Well, if Verina is trying to hide this girl from her dad, then she might have another phone or even a burner.
Kids, they grow up so fast these days.
Got her! Esma Reis, 17.
Lives in the north section of Adana.
Social media brings up Verina with facial recognition.
I got a ping on Esma's cell.
Nine miles east of you on the outskirts of the city.
I'm sending coordinates now.
Okay, well, we're gonna be dealing with a terrified kid here, so, Jaz, McG, you're with me.
Amir, you stay here, keep an eye on our friend.
He does anything you don't like, make sure you shoot him somewhere that isn't vital.
Adam, I think you're forgetting something really important.
Like a "thank you, partner"! [SOFT PIANO MUSIC PLAYING.]
Can't be with a guy who catches criminals Do your bosses know? That we sleep together? You're always so blunt, P.
They don't ask.
With the quality of information we're giving them, I think their attitude is "don't rock the boat.
" Hmm.
It's too bad, in a way, that we have to keep it secret.
Alex, what's wrong? What makes you think something's wrong? You're being sentimental, for starters.
Last week in Jakarta - Let me get the tape.
- No, just don't.
Don't.
Don't.
Okay.
Last week in Jakarta, I had to kill this young BIN agent who was trying to kill me.
- Alex, why didn't you tell me? - I'm telling you now.
You don't have anything to worry about.
There's no exposure.
Disappearing people in the rest of the world is easy, you know.
And he wasn't the first.
He won't be the last.
Thing is he nearly killed me.
You know what they say about your life flashing before your eyes? - That didn't happen.
- Mm? Instead I saw flashes of things that would never be.
Like meeting your son.
Well, we've talked about having a normal life somewhere down the road.
P, I don't want to I don't want to grill steaks in the backyard and talk about ball games.
I want to do what I do.
And see you.
We should get it on tape, just in case.
Just in case.
[EXPLOSION.]
Director Campbell, we've started our descent into Incirlik.
We'll have you on the ground shortly.
You a practicing Muslim? Did you get recruited by the agency? Well, I know that's not Preach's rug.
And it's certainly not that firecracker who seems to be in denial about who she is and what she wants.
Yeah, I got recruited too.
They told me it was because I had a facility for language.
But I suspect it had something to do with a certain moral flexibility.
I don't share your moral flexibility.
Really? You're an inside man.
Probably been undercover in a dozen terrorist cells? How many times you just stood there, watched a woman being beaten? How many times you just walk by when you saw innocent people being tortured, you never so much as made eye contact? What are you hoping to accomplish? You think by playing some mind games, you're gonna compete with what I've endured? Or by appealing to our similarities, what, you're gonna win yourself a favor or the benefit of the doubt? You have no idea who I am or what I've been through.
Someone once told me that the most important details are not in what a man says but in how he says it.
A pause, an inflection.
You just told me a lot.
Dalton, we're tracking Esma's phone.
We should have coordinates any minute now.
Roger that.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
Okay, guys, Esma just entered a coffee shop about a half mile ahead of your current position.
Looking at Verina's bank card, seems to be one of her favorites.
Top, I have a very bad feeling about this.
Why, what happened? Did Hoffman say something? No, nothing specific.
It's just that I've been doing this for quite a long time now, and I know when I'm out of my league.
There's something much bigger here.
Oh! It's gonna be okay.
It's gonna be okay.
All right, we'll keep our footprint to a minimum.
McGuire, I'm gonna post you at the door.
Once you tell us it's clear, Jaz and I will head inside.
We'll engage the girls, and I'll grab Verina.
Should be in and out, less than 30 seconds.
Hi, I'm a friend of your father's.
He told me to tell you Esma! [DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
[SPEAKING TURKISH.]
All right.
This is us right here on the left.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
You're all right.
- Esma? - What do you got? Yeah, she's got a small puncture wound in her jugular.
They must have hit her with some strong sedative.
Three of them, maybe two minutes ago.
The manager just called 112.
Okay, McGuire, we got to wake her up.
I mean, we can't take her with us.
Cops are gonna be here in 90 seconds.
Man, we got cameras in the streets, got cameras inside the coffee shop.
I need to know who we're looking for.
Figure multiple people, one vehicle, sometime in the last five minutes.
Hey, hey, we're friends.
We're friends of Verina's.
Verina.
We're friends, okay? Can you tell us what happened? They took her.
They took her.
Yeah, we only know that.
Can you tell us anything about them? Yeah, what about what about her phone number, Esma? We can find her that way.
We can track her.
No phone.
She sent me a message from in there.
Okay.
Command, I don't think Esma can help us.
Gonna have to find another way.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
[GRUNTING.]
[WHIMPERING.]
- Please.
- Sit down.
[SIGHS.]
Hello, Verina.
Sorry for having to be so rough with you just then, but, you know, needs must.
Do you want anything to eat, to drink? - Esma.
- She's fine, and she'll remain that way as long as you and I keep getting along.
All right, I can see you're wondering what you're doing here.
We want you to show us how you did it.
- Did what? - Verina.
- I don't know.
It was a fluke.
- [LAUGHS.]
The back door has been patched now for sure.
Well you know what they say, don't you? When one door closes another one opens.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
Alex, that doesn't make any sense.
You said earlier that the ambassador's secretary didn't know.
Now you're saying she did.
Did I? Oh, well I must have misspoke.
You said she didn't know, which is why you opted to make direct contact with her boss.
Oh, yeah, yeah, of course.
Of course she did.
The whole thing was such a mess, it Mm-hmm, sure.
It's hard to keep it all straight.
- Sure.
- Sorry, P.
No problem.
Let's pick up with the conversation with Can I take a break for a few minutes, please? Her boss.
We've been doing this for hours.
I just want to [EXHALES.]
- I need a few minutes.
- Sure.
Can I get you something? Don't, no.
Just sit.
Don't go anywhere and don't call anyone.
I would like to sit here and just for five minutes, pretend we're not who we are.
I like who we are.
I'm proud of it.
I'm proud of us, proud of what we've done.
- I just said that wrong.
- No problem.
How's your son? [LAUGHS.]
Um My son.
Well he wants to go to ROTC.
I mean, he's only in high school, but Yeah, well, of course he does.
He sees you making a difference.
He wants to be a part of it.
Well, what does it say about me that I don't want him to be? What does it say about me that I'm willing to risk my life, I'm willing to risk other's lives, but I want to forbid him from risking his own? It says you're human.
Every time I think about it, I get a horrible dread.
Fear of what's to come, I guess.
- Yeah, I know the feeling.
- You do? Why? Just because I'm me.
All right, Command, where the hell are we on those cameras? We're nowhere.
About five minutes before Verina was taken, traffic cams were taken out.
Same thing happened to the coffee shop cam two minutes after that.
We got nothing.
- Fantastic.
- I was gonna say, hitting a spot that exact on someone's neck for an injection like that? I mean, that's a 50-50 shot, even with me.
Whoever got to her, they were some serious pros.
You think it's a coincidence that we got a serious pro tied up back at base right now? [TENSE MUSIC.]
Where's the guest of honor? Where is she? - I have no idea.
- Yeah? What were you gonna do with her if you got ahold of her today? My orders were to grab her and then await further instructions.
That's how these things work.
That way, on the off chance I get picked up, I don't know anything about the others involved.
- Oh, yeah? - Even you know that.
You're gonna tell us everything we need to know to find this girl, do you understand me? Does your boyfriend always have such a short fuse? - My what? - I think I know a little bit about crossing the line with coworkers.
Yeah, enough of the mind games.
Come on, Adam.
I haven't even had a go at you yet.
- Oh, is that right? - Yeah, it'll be fun.
That one, I'm looking forward to.
Great, well, then why wait? Let's get at it right now.
Dalton, we've got some bad news.
Another sub's gone offline.
This time in the South China Sea.
This just got a lot bigger than one teenage hacker.
All right, where's Patricia? Wheels down and heading to you.
Maybe she can get what she needs out of this guy.
Please don't tell me that you think Patricia's coming here - to help you find Verina.
- Shut the hell up.
She's coming here for me, to take me home.
And in so doing, she'll destroy not only her career but her entire life.
No, this is just more mind games.
Mind games? Come on, think.
The moment you found me, you destroyed her.
And I'm not talking about some slap-on-the-wrist suspension like she got for Tehran.
I'm talking about life in prison.
Talking about her falling on her sword with you as accidental executioner.
Prison? For what? For everything we did.
Director Havel.
Ms.
Campbell, this is Mr.
Santos, president's chief of staff, and Mr.
Morgan, national security advisor.
Sit, please.
What's going on? Is Alex okay? He's in a lot of trouble.
For the moment, we're inclined to believe that you have not been aware of the true extent of his dealings and methods.
But we need your help, because no one knows him better than you.
- Is he okay? - He fooled us, Patricia.
Fooled us all.
Sure, the information you've provided has been accurate, and he has served this country.
Unfortunately, in order to accomplish those goals, he's murdered more than a dozen innocent people.
Tortured numerous others.
Bartered information with drug cartels, weapons merchants, and dictators.
He's lost the thread, Patricia.
And in doing so, he's put years of intelligence work at risk.
He's put our nation at risk.
He's beyond salvage.
Now, you know him better than anyone.
So we think our best chance of pulling this off is if you plan it and you run it.
Pulling what off? His execution.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
Madam Deputy Director.
Chief Carter.
Welcome to our home away from home.
Mm.
- Hello Alex.
- Hello, P.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
No communication, no navigation.
When it came back online, its course had been altered.
When we combed the sub's systems, we found code that didn't belong there.

It's okay.
