Training Day (2017) s01e13 Episode Script
Elegy Part 2
1 Previously on Training Day Ivers came to see me last night.
Told me to stop investigating Billy's murder or else.
Why would Ivers know anything about my father? I don't know, but he's about to tell me.
Your old man was a good cop, Kyle.
What they did to him was wrong.
Who's they? You climb high enough, you get to a place where there's no difference between cops and criminals.
That's where you'll find them.
But, brother, I wouldn't recommend it.
Frank: You know something.
There's two keys.
It's a matched set.
They want them both.
You just walk into a trap because you won't listen to me or anyone.
I should have turned you in to Lockhart the day I met you! Kyle was a spy for Lockhart.
You should have told us, Frank.
That's not for you to decide.
I'm your boss.
I thought you were more than that.
Just hold on.
It's okay, honey.
What the hell's wrong with you? Billy: I got another verse just for you, Frank.
Leviathan.
It's a monster big enough to take on God himself.
Walks off with it.
Pray he don't see you coming.
[Hip-hop music plays.]
Billy: Hey.
Meet me at Hollenbeck and First, code two high.
I got something by the tail here, man, something big, and there's teeth at the other end, man.
Frank: Wait, Hollenbeck and First? What the hell are you talking about? No, not on the phone, Frankie.
There's no way to know who else might be listening.
Get over here, man.
[Siren wails.]
[Train horn blares.]
Let me guess, I I fit a description, right? Step out of the car.
Listen, just relax, I'm a Step out of the car now.
Listen, I realize it's a misdemeanor for a black man to ride alone at night in L.
A.
, but I'm on the job.
Where's the key? [Gunshot.]
[Grunts.]
[Tires screech.]
Billy! No! I got you, Billy.
I got you.
[Chuckles.]
Frank? Hey.
I didn't want to wake you.
[Chuckles.]
Well, it's not a spectator sport, honey.
Come to bed.
I gotta leave town, Holly.
Why? [Sighs.]
It's about Billy, isn't it? Yeah.
Look.
- Look at me, Frank.
- Oh, baby Look at me.
Whatever it is you think you have to do, you don't.
I have to finish it.
Buy the ticket, take the ride.
[Sniffles.]
When I when I got into the life, I had told myself it was just for a few months.
Then five years later, I was telling myself it was just until I finished my Masters, paid off the condo.
You know, I always thought I would have time for family, kids.
Only that never happened for me.
But then you happened.
And all the bad choices and missed opportunities, they didn't matter anymore because they led me to you.
You were worth the trip.
So were you.
[Sighs.]
- Where are they? - Where are what? I'm light-years past screwing around with you, Frank.
Hand over the keys you stole from me.
Two keys means it's gotta be a safe-deposit box somewhere, isn't it? Isn't it?! So what's in it, dope, cash, or some piece of evidence that incriminates you? I don't have time for this right now, Kyle.
Frank, I'm not letting you walk out of here.
[Grunts.]
[Grunts.]
Relax.
Just a beanbag.
[Grunting.]
Damn it, Kyle, stay down! [Grunts.]
[Gasping.]
Try and breathe.
Don't.
Don't, don't.
Listen to me, Kyle.
Please, Frank.
I don't expect you to understand this, but where I'm going, your dad wouldn't want you to follow.
And I'll be damned if I'm gonna bury another Craig.
[Clanging.]
Frank.
Frank.
Frank! Frank! Please, Frank, come back! Wait! I need to know, Frank, please! I need to know.
Frank! [Siren wails, police radio chatter.]
Training Day 1x13 Air date 21 May 2017 Kyle, where is everybody? I can't imagine I'm first on your in case of emergency call list.
You're not.
But the band broke up.
Tommy and Rebecca stopped answering my calls.
Because of what happened to Lockhart? Yeah, among other things.
How is she? Good.
Stable, out of surgery.
Kyle, come on, talk to me.
What is going on? Frank has gone rogue.
[Siren wailing.]
The only leads we have were the keys.
Two matching keys, all these people willing to kill for them.
Gotta be a safe-deposit box.
- A bank.
- Only we don't know which bank.
My guess is Mexico somewhere, or the Caymans.
The key my father buried had the serial number filed off.
The second key still had the serial number intact.
Well, if we had the serial number, we could trace the key back to its origin.
But we don't have it.
We don't have the key, but I have the number.
I need you to get up.
Wait, wait, wait, wait.
I had a feeling Frank might take off with it.
It's an old cop trick From before smartphones.
Your dad actually taught it to me.
- [Chuckles.]
- Thank you.
Yeah.
Kyle.
Hold up a minute.
Frank comes from a long line of outlaws.
It's in his blood.
And for the last 30 years, he's been chasing criminals, learning how the think.
Frank's better at this than you are.
Promise me you won't try and take him alone.
He's dangerous, Kyle.
Yeah.
Well, so am I.
Those numbers match anything in the locksmith database? No.
Not a damn thing.
Which means either those numbers were stamped on that key before the database was even digitized, or Lockhart copied them down wrong.
Well, you were in the middle of a gun fight.
It could happen to anyone.
I'm sorry, Kyle, but there's no other way to find him now.
Yes, there is.
[Beeps.]
[Classical music plays.]
[Chickens clucking.]
[Cellphone rings.]
SÃ? - [Man speaking Spanish.]
- This is Comandante Ruiz.
Comandante Ruiz, this is Detective Valeria Chavez.
Oh, the lovely and talented Detective Chavez.
It's good to hear your voice again.
So how may I help you today? Reporter: Comandante? Comandante? [Speaking Spanish.]
Is someone there with you? I'm sorry.
It's been one of those days.
All these reporters sitting around my office.
Can you hold on a second? I'm gonna get rid of them.
[Grunts.]
[Beeps.]
My apologies.
Please continue.
He's coming to Las Viboras.
Val: Knowing him, he's already there.
Who's coming to Las Viboras? Who do you think? Nah.
Why would Frank Rourke return to Las Viboras? He knows exactly what I will do to him if he sets foot in my town again.
He's coming to rob your bank.
[Scoffs.]
Okay.
Well, gracias for the information, Detective.
You've been most helpful.
Go to hell.
Sit tight.
Man: Your great-grandfather, he robbed trains.
Your granddaddy took down banks, and your daddy well, you know what your daddy did.
Let me pull this robbery with you.
I won't let you down, Daddy.
I can do it.
Hey, I know.
You're the best crime partner I ever had.
Your time will come.
Artemis: You know I've killed 16 men, Frank.
Only missed one you.
If I killed you right now, I'd regain my perfect record.
[Horse neighs in distance.]
That why you came down here? Figured I could kill you, take a selfie with your corpse, and split.
You want to kill him, Artemis, the line forms on the right.
Take a number.
But my vengeance comes before your perfect record.
You can have the Jackal after I've opened his throat.
[Grunts.]
Ladies, ladies, please.
No need to fight over me.
You didn't tell me Lina was going to be here.
Oh.
You two know each other? We've met professionally.
That's hot.
Look, you want to kill me, fine.
But just hear me out.
It's a bank, and I need backup.
I'm not a thief, Frank.
I'm a killer.
What she said.
I get it.
This deal's different.
Belongs to the cartel.
You know everyone said you were crazy.
No, this is next level.
[Chuckles.]
I know, right? That's exactly what I tell him, you know what I mean? All right, who's this guy? Artemis, Lina meet Moreno, our getaway driver.
S'up, girl? How you doing? Man, give me a hug.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, all right.
You ain't a hugger, that's cool.
You gotta be kidding me.
I wish I was.
So how much are we talking about here? Somewhere north of $8 million.
Split three ways.
Okay.
I'm in.
So am I.
[Cheap Trick's Surrender plays.]
Mother told me Yes, she told me I'd meet girls like you She also told me Stay away You'll never know what you'll catch Just the other day I heard Of a soldier's falling off Some Indonesian junk that's going round [Screaming.]
[Grunts.]
Mommy's all right Daddy's all right They just seem a little weird Surrender All right, nobody moves, nobody gets hurt.
I mean, nobody else gets hurt.
Forget it.
You're on crowd control.
Nobody's going anywhere.
Three minutes.
Come on, come on, move, move! iAndale, ándale! [Sirens approaching.]
- Or not.
- 5-0 you gotta be kidding me! You said there was no alarm.
- There isn't! - We need to abort.
Frank, come on, let's go! What are you doing?! - Let's go, let's go! - Don't wait for me! Let's go! [Sirens wailing.]
Oh, come on, come on.
Come on, come on! Ah! You have to go, Frank.
I know.
I mean it, man.
Nag, nag, nag.
[Shouting in Spanish.]
Frankie, Frankie.
What are you doing here? What can I say, Felix? I like your tequila and I'm loco about your senoritas.
[Laughter.]
SÃ.
[Chuckles.]
Well, I think the only senorita you can't stay away from is Dona Sebastiana Lady Death.
Why don't you just go to bed with her already, hmm? I don't know, she's been playing hard to get.
Not anymore.
[Chuckles.]
Ay, dios mio.
It is so good to see you again.
Can we get a quick picture?! Toma, photo.
[Speaks Spanish.]
Come, come on, come on.
[Speaking Spanish.]
Wait, wait, wait.
Everybody in? Smile, everybody.
Uno, dos, tres Cucaracha! [Sirens wail in distance.]
[Banging from trunk.]
Corporal Craig, my friend.
There's something different about you.
Yeah, this time, I'm the one holding the gun.
It's what's in your eyes.
There's an animal there now.
Maybe it was there all along, but you were hiding it from the world.
From yourself.
How did you find me? You'd be amazed what a drug dealer will tell you when you shoot out his kneecap.
Don't you realize this is exactly what Frank would do? He trained me well.
[Chuckles.]
Where's Frank? What makes you believe I would know? Your underling didn't take me seriously until I worked my way around his second kneecap.
But I'm betting you're smarter than that.
Frank crossed into Las Viboras, Mexico.
Apparently, he tried to rob a cartel bank there, but someone alerted the Comandante in Las Viboras.
A man named Ruiz.
The area's El Jaguar.
He works for the cartel.
An enforcer? A butcher.
Frank and El Jaguar are no strangers.
Years ago, your boss had an affair with this madman's wife.
[Escape (The Pina Colada Song) playing.]
Ay, Chihuahua! Is he still alive? If he's still alive he'll be begging for death soon enough.
Frank was taken to El Jaguar's compound outside Las Viboras.
Ruiz built his mansion over the remains of an Aztec pyramid.
Beneath the hacienda lies a place - known as the Cradle of Serpents.
- And Ruiz uses it just like the old days for human sacrifice.
Where? All right, all right, all right.
I'm a detective, but I'm not really a cop.
Correct.
Well, that's easy.
I'm Kyle Craig.
[Laughs.]
No.
I talk out of my ass.
I'm Frank, I gotta be Frank.
God, no! I hope it's not me.
Twice drink.
Just terrible.
[Chuckles.]
[Sighs.]
You know what's weird? I can't remember my parents, but I can remember them leaving me.
That's what this feels like.
Well, you still got me.
[Moans.]
[Knock on door.]
[Scoffs.]
Oh, perfect timing.
We need to talk.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! Take it real easy, hombre.
Tranquilo, pet detective.
Rebecca: Hands.
Son of a bitch.
What's he doing here? Frank's in trouble, and you haven't been answering my calls.
So you brought a drug dealer to Tommy's house?! He can help.
Hey, I'm more of a transnational drug kingpin, actually.
Did you read the piece about me in Forbes? Well, that's great.
Now he knows where I live.
Hey, so move.
Hey, suck it, Scarface.
El Jaguar has Frank.
Well, then Frank's already dead.
I don't think so, not yet.
El Jaguar's having a party to celebrate Frank's capture.
A quick death is not his way.
If there's even a chance Frank's still alive Can you get us into that party? Yes, I can get you into the party.
But getting Frank out is your problem.
[Grunting.]
You know, Frank I was raised Catholic.
You go to Mass, Confession, put a couple bucks in the collection plate, and hope he's paying attention.
[Chuckles.]
So tell me why? Why do we pretend? I mean, deep down, we all know it's blood and death he desires.
So why not give him what he really wants? The Aztecs.
[Chuckles.]
These people they used this beautiful blade to break open the victim's rib cage and rip out the still-beating hearts as an offering.
But not a prayer.
No.
Just a simple transaction.
He wants blood.
I I want power.
Would you mind disinfecting it first? I don't want to get a nasty infection.
[Chuckles.]
You're going to feel it when I tear it out of you.
Felix, come on, amigo.
You're not still sore about me and your old lady, are you? They say infidelity is just a symptom of a larger problem.
Of course, your wife said I had the larger problem.
Hmm.
You want to make me angry enough to kill you outright? It won't work.
You see, my wife and I reconciled years ago.
And we still sleep next to each other every night.
I removed her face and stitched it into a throw pillow.
And after this, I'll have a matching set.
But, hey, first there's someone here who wants to have a few words with you.
Oh, Ruiz! These taco lenguas are to die for, bro.
Ivers.
Frankie, these cartel guys know how to party.
I'm moving down here when I retire.
What's that, party favors? Oh, you're gonna dig this.
You know, Frank, guys like us we have a hard time opening up.
We don't like to talk about our feelings.
And these youngsters with the mustache wax and the skinny jeans, forget about it.
You know, I had to interrogate this German hacker.
It was like the kid was made out of papier-maché.
I mean, the poor bastard starts bawling the minute I took off his beanie.
Who does that? [Laughs.]
It starts in school, Frank.
You know, I heard they won't even let them play tag anymore.
So what, you gonna do that Clockwork Orange thing to my eyes and make me binge-watch Girls? Oh, come on.
Even I'm not that cruel.
No, this is a little cocktail - [Grunts.]
- To make it easier for you to open up to me so that we can have an honest conversation.
[Grunts.]
[Engine revving.]
Do you idiots have anything resembling a plan? - The usual.
- Grab Frank.
And shoot our way out.
You're all gonna die here.
El Jaguar's nephew, Ramiro, he fancies himself as a hip-hop artist.
But he's also a paranoid psychotic.
I told him that you are a famous DJ.
Wait, which one of us is the DJ? I don't care.
Horale, Menjivar! Horale.
This the guy? Yeah, the guy I told you about from San Diego.
He's DJ No, man, just DJ.
As in The DJ.
[Chuckles.]
Hells yeah, he is.
Hey, make sure your hair looks good, bro, 'cause we're gonna take some selfies later.
- Cool? - Yeah.
Right on, homie.
Vaya con dios, my friends.
- [Speaking Spanish.]
- Jesus Malverde.
Patron saint of drug traffickers.
And sicarios.
- [Speaking Spanish.]
- - [Laughter.]
- [Cheering.]
Hey, let me show you my sound studio right quick.
That's where all the magic happens, homie.
Yeah, no doubt.
Listen, um I hope this doesn't weird you out, but big guns are a total turn-on for me.
- Oh, yeah? - Yeah.
Think you could let me hold yours? For a minute? [Chuckles.]
Oh.
Ooh.
Whoa! Buddy you have got to get me the recipe for this hooch.
Hoochie, coochie, woochie! Hey, Ivers, you remember Charo.
Underrated Elvis movie? I'm talking about that sexy little Spanish minx from The Love Boat.
That was a pretty good movie.
Hey, should we get to it? Oh! In the words of Richard M.
Nixon, Sock it to me! I got two questions, Frank just two.
Oh.
Answer them completely and honestly, and we are done.
Question one how much do you know about Leviathan? And question two who else did you tell? That's easy.
Not a damn thing and nobody.
Well we're off to a bad start, Frank.
Hey.
Well, that's okay.
I mean, we can ask me again.
[Holly whimpering.]
Whoa.
Holly? I told you, Frank, did I not? I warned you that this was not gonna end well Not for you, not for anyone that you care about.
Come on, man, she's got nothing to do with this! She does now! So how about we go back to question one, Frank.
How much do you know about Leviathan? Holly, look at me! - [Whimpers.]
- Look at me! It's gonna be okay, baby.
It's gonna be okay.
I can't tell you what I don't know! I told you what I needed from you! I can't tell you.
I'm sorry, Frank, you just killed her.
[Screams.]
And I'm gonna kill you, Ivers.
I swear! And in the meantime, some other folks from your life just showed up in time "to play Frank Rourke, this is your life" How lucky for us, huh? Don't tell them anything, Frank.
[Grunts.]
No! [Screams.]
Frank, please.
It's over.
Just tell him what he wants to know.
It's all right, honey.
Don't be scared.
Billy: It's Ivers' cocktail.
It's all a hallucination.
It's in your mind.
He's not really here, Frank.
None of them are.
It's just smoke and mirrors, man.
You can't seriously think you're gonna make it out of here.
- Not your problem, pal.
- Just keep smiling.
Hola.
[Grunts.]
You better start talking, man.
Just make something up.
He doesn't know squat.
He would have told us if he did.
No one can resist the serum.
He's all yours, Comandante.
I know you're gonna assassinate the President of Mexico, Ivers.
[Chuckles.]
What the hell are you talking about? What's he talking about? What are you talking about, man? That's the plan, right? Assassinate El Presidente, blame La Fraternidad.
Then the Mexican army moves in and wipes out Ruiz and his hermanos.
And you install a puppet dictator to fill the void.
Oops.
Did I say too much? Sorry.
You're not buying any of this crap, are you? You lying bastard.
You realize none of this crap is true, right? [Speaks Spanish.]
Ruiz, you can't be buying any of this.
[Chuckles.]
You said nobody can resist the serum, right? Well there's only one way to find out.
[Grunting.]
No! Where the hell did he go?! What the hell? - Ruiz got away.
- Rebecca: What? We gotta move, now! Frank: It's okay, sweetheart.
It's okay.
I've got you now.
Come on, Frank.
Let's get you out of here.
It's okay.
[Alarm blaring.]
Okay.
I'm open to dumb ideas.
We form Voltron.
Not that dumb.
[Shouting in Spanish.]
This is cool.
Aloha, señor! - [Speaking Spanish.]
- Los Angeles policemen, so you think your badges are your license to invade a sovereign nation? - Badges? - We don't need no badges.
I don't need to show you any stinking badges.
Well, here ended your daring rescue Doomed to failure because it was incredibly stupid, right? But, hey, in America, everybody gets an award.
So I'm totally gonna kill that guy.
I got weird beard.
Mexican Telly Savalas.
I guess I'll kill everybody else.
I've got your 50-caliber participation trophies right here.
Stay blood-thirsty, my friend! [Beeping.]
[Grunts.]
[AC/DC's Highway to Hell plays.]
[Gunfire.]
[Shouting in Spanish.]
Living easy Living free Season ticket on a one-way ride Askin' nothin' Leave me be Takin' everything in my stride Ride's here! Don't need reason Don't need rhyme Cover me! Ain't nothin' that I'd rather do Goin' down Party time My friends are gonna be there, too Oh, oh Hey, Felix don't forget your participation trophy.
Whoo-hoo! On a highway to hell Moreno! You came back! I'm like the Mexican Han Solo.
You're Juan Solo, baby! Let's ride! Whoo-hoo! Viva La Raza! I'm on the highway to hell Highway to hell And I'm goin' down Kyle we're not out of the woods yet, all right? We just wasted about 20 members of La Fraternidad, and in my experience, that kind of thing tends to piss them off.
Hey.
Tommy, just give us a minute.
Wheels up in five.
This isn't over, trainee.
I'm not your trainee anymore.
And it is over.
My dad died for this.
Frank, look at it.
Leviathan.
That's what Ivers told me.
At least that's what I think he said.
Frank, there's nothing here.
Look, it's just ashes.
It's Ivers.
Who's that with him? [Horse neighs in distance.]
- It's Tim Wallace.
- Wallace.
You were the first cop on the scene at my father's murder.
Your dad was dead when I got there.
Somebody upstairs didn't want it solved.
It was right there in front of me.
Even with the fire damage, we still got enough here for an arrest warrant.
We're not gonna arrest him.
We're gonna take that bastard somewhere and make him talk.
Tim: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! [Grunts.]
What the hell do you want?! You held out on me, Tim.
[Sighs.]
Hiya, Tim.
Long time How did we get here, huh? Let's see.
I know you worked Central Narcotics with Alonzo Harris until Harris got whacked and the whole scandal broke.
Then you and the rest of Alonzo's band of brothers all turned on each other.
Murders double-crosses.
And when the smoke finally cleared, you and your partner, Jeff Kern, were the last men standing.
And you got busted back to patrol.
But you were still out there capering, weren't ya? What were you and Kern into, dope? Extortion, murder for hire? We were into everything.
But somewhere along the lines, you guys got into something so vile, not even your partner could stomach it.
What was it that stuck in Jeff's craw? It was Leviathan, wasn't it? [Grunts.]
We had no idea what kind of people we were dealing with how far up it went.
By the time we figured it out, it was too late.
Jeff Jeff wanted out, he wanted to come clean.
You gotta listen to me! We were past the point of no return.
So you killed him.
I didn't kill Jeff, they did.
Who's they? They they Leviathan! Who are you talking about, the cartels, dirty cops, the CIA? The you still think that there's a difference? Well, how did they find out Kern was gonna talk? Because they're everywhere! Two keys they were yours? Mine and Jeff's.
We gathered all the evidence we had on Leviathan and stuck it in a safe deposit box.
Yeah, as an insurance policy enough to bury them.
[Chuckles.]
We even hid it right under their noses in a cartel bank.
If you two idiots opened the box, then you already know everything that I know about Leviathan.
Almost everything in the box was damaged.
Ivers burned it.
Oh.
Then we're already dead men.
Wallace I want you to think carefully before you answer me.
Did you kill my father? You know I never wanted Billy involved in this.
When Billy finally caught up with me, I was kind of relieved, you know? Just to have somebody to talk to about all of it.
But then Billy took the key.
That key was the only thing keeping me alive.
Did you kill my father?! Step out of the car.
Where's the key? I shot him in the gut.
I I told him I would call for an R.
A.
unit if he told me where he'd hidden the key, but the tough son of a bitch never cracked.
He just lay there, bleeding out.
Okay.
Okay, I pulled the trigger, all right?! I did it! But I'm not the one that you want! No, no, no, no, no.
You want whoever's behind this, right? You want Leviathan.
And if you kill me you'll never get there.
I'm a resourceful man.
I'll figure something out.
[Gunshot.]
[Grunts.]
[Gasps.]
Fra You You I'm sorry, Kyle.
Wh-what why? Why would you So you wouldn't have to.
Billy wouldn't want to see his son killing an unarmed man, no matter what the son of a bitch had done.
We'll never know what my father would have wanted because this son of a bitch killed him.
You kill a monster in cold blood, he doesn't really die, Kyle.
He becomes part of you.
And this world sure as hell doesn't need anymore monsters.
It doesn't need any more Tim Wallaces or Alonzo Harrises.
Or Frank Rourkes.
Frank: Detective Craig and I approached Officer Wallace to question him about Billy Craig's shooting.
We entered the building, we followed, he turned and opened fire.
That's when I engaged him.
My shot hit center mass.
I called it in.
Shots fired.
Repeat shots fired.
We waited with Wallace.
He was unresponsive when emergency services arrived.
It's what happened.
Kyle? It went down exactly the way Frank said it did, ma'am.
Guy pulled on us, and Frank fired in immediate defense of life.
[Chuckles.]
Fine work, Detective Rourke.
Both you and your trainee are to be commended for your bravery and decisive action.
Thank you, Deputy Chief.
But Detective Craig is no longer my trainee.
He's my partner.
Dismissed, gentlemen.
What makes a man do wonders? What makes a man do wrong? What makes a man leave bed and board And turn his back on home? [Bell dings.]
Ride away [Bell dings.]
Ride away Ride away
Told me to stop investigating Billy's murder or else.
Why would Ivers know anything about my father? I don't know, but he's about to tell me.

Leviathan.
It's a monster big enough to take on God himself.

[Hip-hop music plays.]
Billy: Hey.

Billy!
