Sunburn

1
(upbeat music)
(mysterious tune)
(light switches clicking off)
(electronic whir)
- Hannah?
What are you doing here
at this time of night?
- Oh, um, sorry Miss.
I just wanted to copy some
notes to study for the exam.
That is okay, isn't it?
- Of course.
I'm glad to see you're
putting in such an effort.
- Well, I know I've fallen a bit behind
but I am determined to catch up.
- I'm pleased to hear it.
(copier whirs and beeps)
Oh, don't worry this often happens.
That old copier is on it's
last legs, I'm afraid.
Let it cool down, finish what you're doing
and then off to bed, okay?
- Yes Miss.
- Goodnight, Hannah.
(sighs)
- Rotten machine.
(upbeat music)
(grinding of stone)
(electrical mystical whirring)
(grinding of stone)
(rock music)
(waves roaring and crashing)
- You shouldn't stay out
in the sun for too long,
you know right?
Especially in the middle
of the day 'cause--
- Get it, thanks for the advice,
I'll ask for it next time.
(waves crashing)
- Hey Hannah, what are you reading?
- I'm studying for an exam.
- But it's the holidays.
- Yeah, well, some schools
have entrance exams
and I might be sitting for one
so I thought I'd prepare.
- You're so conscientious Hannah,
pity some of it didn't rub off on Brett.
- Did you just see me on that wave?
It was totally awesome.
- Tell someone who's interested.
- Hey, you might like
surfing if you tried it.
- (scoffs) I'd rather go to the dentist.
- You just won't try new things.
Alright, that's your problem.
- I can't think of a bigger waste of time.
- Hey Brett, come to get a few pointers
at my new surf clinic?
- With you Paul, I don't think so mate.
(upbeat tune)
- How about you?
- Um, well
- Nah, forget it Paul, she hates sport.
Especially surfing.
- No, I don't!
See, I'm from Ireland and
we don't really get a chance
but I'd love to learn.
- You would?
- Sure, I love to try new things.
That's my problem.
- Excellent, you're gonna be
just the girl I'm looking for.
- Really?
- Every year I like to
take on one new student
who's never surfed before, a total novice.
Just to prove how easy the whole thing is.
- Yeah?
- What's your name?
- Um, Hannah.
- Nice name.
So Hannah, will you be my novice?
- Well, I'd love to.
- Cool.
- But--
(upbeat music)
- Brett!
Who is that guy?
- Paul Hewitt.
He's a real poser.
- What, he can't surf?
- Oh yeah, he can surf all right,
but his head got way too big
when he got sponsored by
Liquid Squid Surfboards.
- Well, Hannah's taking
surfing lessons with him.
- You're kidding?
- [Meredith] We have to do something.
- So remember, nice fluid action.
Everybody got it?
Okay.
Now Hannah's going to help me demonstrate.
- Demonstrate what?
- Come up here and I'll show ya.
Get on the board.
Alright everyone, now Hannah's gonna
show you all how it's done.
- I thought Hannah had
heaps of study to do.
- Must have changed her mind.
- You should be teaching her.
- Why?
- Well she's your girlfriend.
- She's a girl and she's my friend.
So?
- Honestly Brett, you're
such a loser sometimes.
- Hey look, if she wants to
hang out with that poser,
that's up to her.
- Okay, bring it up,
legs bent, straight out.
Good stuff.
- It's disgusting.
- Yeah, it's pathetic.
- Oh, you agree then?
- Yup, I'm going to have to strip off
all this old wax and start again.
(sighs)
(whooshing)
(low chatter)
- Preparation is the
key to good exam results
and it's all about making sure
you put in those hours of study.
Remember, success is 10% inspiration
and 90% hard work.
So I don't want anything distracting
(talking blurs out to dreamlike state)
I expect 100% concentration.
- The new one will be arriving
this afternoon, Miss Murphy.
This one's gone to heaven, I'm afraid.
- I'm surprised it
lasted as long as it did.
- Aye, you're better off with
one of the new models anyway.
These old ones (heaves) give off an awful
lot of ultraviolet radiation.
- Really?
- Yes, but no need to worry.
Brett will dispose of it, won't you lad?
- Yeah, no worries.
(upbeat music)
Tired, huh?
- No, course not.
- So, how's the surf lessons going?
- All right.
- I thought it was a waste of time,
I thought you'd rather go to the dentist?
- I could've changed my mind.
- Hmm, well Paul the poser
could change it for you.
(upbeat music)
- Honestly, of all the days to get a spot.
Why is life so mean sometimes?
- What's the problem?
- Martins father is taking us to dinner
at this cute little
restaurant by the river.
He's thinking of buying it.
- What, dinner?
- The restaurant, silly.
- Oh, right.
- And then of course I
haven't got a thing to wear.
Oh, all this stuff is so five minutes ago.
It's positively embarrassing.
I'm just gonna have to make do, I suppose.
What do you think?
- I think it displays your
usual thoughtless taste, Tara.
- I know.
Sometimes I worry about
whether I'm too predictable.
- How so?
- Well, if I always look good, which I do,
then how do people know
when I look really good?
- Most girls would die
to have that problem.
- You think so?
- Pretty sure of it.
- Hannah, you can be really
nice sometimes, you know.
- Oh, thanks.
- You should try it more
often, it really suits you.
(door closes)
(thoughtful music)
(whoosh)
(rock music)
- Why are you getting all dressed up?
- Just felt like a change.
- [Meredith] I thought you had to study.
- Well, I can't study
all the time, Meredith.
- It's that Paul guy, isn't it?
- It's nothing got to do with Paul.
- Why are you getting so gaga over him?
- I'm not gaga over him.
I'm just wondering how
to surf, that's all.
- Well, you've never
been interested before.
- So?
Do I want to become predictable?
- What?
- Nevermind.
You wouldn't understand.
(dreamlike music)
(waves crashing)
- Hannah, you're early.
- Yeah, well, thought
I'd pick up a few tips,
you know, sit on the
beach, learn by watching.
- Oh I can do better than that.
How about some personal tuition?
Waves are great for body surfing.
- Oh, no.
It's okay.
- Oh come on, it's the
perfect opportunity,
you wanted to learn.
- Oh, well
- Hey Meredith!
Do you know where Hannah is?
Mum said she'd be down here.
Where?
- [Meredith] In the red shorts.
- (scoffs) That is not Hannah.
Why is she wearing that?
- She doesn't want to be predictable.
- What?
- Nevermind, you wouldn't understand.
- Unbelievable.
- Aren't you gonna get her away from him?
- Why should I?
(sighs)
(splashing)
(whoosh)
(door closes)
- Off studying for the night,
see you tomorrow, Hannah.
Honestly, her complexion will be mud.
(plastic crunching)
(mysterious tune)
Borrowing my clothes without asking?
That's the pits, Hannah!
(whoosh)
(rock music)
(waves crashing)
- Okay, guys, thanks I'll
see you all tomorrow.
- See ya.
- Thanks Paul.
- See ya, Paul.
- Hannah, you did really well today.
- Yeah, right.
Couldn't even stay on the board.
- Ah, you'll get there,
it's just practice.
Anyway, I'll see you tomorrow, hey?
- Yeah.
Um!
Do you want to go and
get a drink or something?
- How about a gelato?
- Yeah.
- See you at the gelato
bar in five minutes?
- Sure.
- Cool.
(upbeat music)
(sighs)
(clears throat)
- Mmm, what flavor?
- This ones mocha and
this one's pistachio.
- Pistachio, my favorite.
- Another pistachio, thanks.
- [Summer] Thanks.
- Hannah, you haven't met Summer.
- Oh hi, nice to meet you.
- Hi, are you in the surf class too?
(both laugh)
- No way, Summer hates surfing.
She's my girlfriend.
- Your girlfriend.
- [Paul] The one and only.
Hey, Hannah likes pistachio too.
- It's the best.
- Yeah.
(music slows down and distorts)
- [Paul] It's a beautiful day.
(upbeat music)
- Where's Hannah?
- How should I know?
- Brett.
- What?
- We need to talk.
Hannah's totally under Paul's spell.
She's lost her grip on real life.
- She's what?
- We have to help her
escape from his clutches.
- Come on, his surf
lessons aren't that bad.
- No, you just don't get it, do you?
- What's there to get?
Just chill out, Meredith
or you'll see yourself having a meltdown.
- But Hannah!
- She's probably gone home.
Just relax, will you?
(relaxing music)
(electrical mystical whirring)
(suctioning zap)
(knocks)
- Brett, it's me, Meredith.
Can I come in?
(doorknob rattles)
Hey, look, I know this must
be a very difficult time for you.
It's okay, you don't have to say anything.
I realize boys don't know
how to express their real feelings.
They just don't understand
that communication is the key
to any successful partnership.
(whoosh)
- Have you see Hannah?
- Hasn't she got the exam this morning?
- Yes, and I need to find out what
she's going to be wearing.
- Sorry?
- (sighs) Nevermind.
Do you know where she is?
- Wasn't she in your room?
- If she had been there,
then I wouldn't be
asking you now, would I?
- You mean, you haven't
seen her all morning?
- She spent the night studying somewhere.
In my clothes!
- Right.
Well if I see her, I'll tell
her you're looking for her.
- Are you sure you
don't know where she is?
- Absolutely.
Positively.
Wouldn't have a clue, see ya.
(mysterious spy music)
(chattering)
(footsteps on stairway)
(door creaks open)
(door creaks open)
(electrical mystical whirring)
- Brett? (echoes)
(whoosh)
- Meredith?
Where's Hannah?
- Great, you finally
decided to take my advice.
- What advice?
- It's okay, I understand.
You had to play it cool, it's a boy thing.
- Look, I hate to crash
your strange of the world,
but I need to know, do
you know where Hannah is?
- No, last time I saw her,
she was down at the surf clinic.
- Thank you.
- But that finished hours ago.
(whoosh)
- There was a bright
flash, I looked in here
and suddenly Brett was gone!
- People don't just disappear
into thin air, Tara!
- It's true!
- I'm sure there's a
rational explantation for it.
Let's wait till we see Brett and ask him.
- But what if we can't find Brett?
You know what if it's not safe in there?
- Let's just keep calm, Tara.
I am not canceling the exam
for the sake of a bright flash!
(whoosh)
(rock music)
- Hannah?
Hannah!
Hannah, wake up!
Have you been here since your surf lesson?
You should be more careful
it's summer, you know!
- (sighs) Summer
- What?
- It's so unfair.
- What's so unfair about it?
We have summer every year,
what are you talking about?
(sighs)
- Just daydreaming.
- Listen, you've got to
get back to O'Keefes,
your exam's about to start!
- What?
Oh, okay.
(groans in pain)
Ow, my head.
- Well, what do you expect?
You've been laying out in the sun all day.
(whimpers)
Come on.
(upbeat music)
(electrical mystical whirring)
- I didn't mean to stay out too long.
I was just so tired I fell asleep.
(suctioning zap)
(whoosh)
Sorry that I'm late, Miss Murphy.
- All right, Hannah, take a seat please.
We'll discuss your tardiness later.
- Have you borrowed some of
my clothes without asking?
- No talking, please.
Keep your exam papers turned down.
And that means you, too, Martin Stonton.
You may begin the exam, now.
(rustle of papers overturning)
(tense music)
(Hannah snores)
- Hannah?
Miss Murphy, there's something
the matter with Hannah.
(students exclaim in confusion)
- Hannah?
Hannah?
- Well what's wrong with her?
- Better not be catching.
(whoosh)
(grinding of stone)
(electrical mystical whirring)
If I didn't know better,
I'd say the poor girl was sunburnt.
- That's ridiculous, with the
weather we've been having?
- Strange.
It might be an allergic reaction.
- Hannah doesn't have anything
about that in her file.
- It's very baffling,
the poor girl looks
radioactive, bless her.
- [Martin] Matron thinks
Hannah's suffering
from radiation poisoning.
- It must have something
to do with that glow
I saw in the basement.
- [Martin] What if there's something
down there leaking radiation?
- [Tara] We could all be at risk!
- Well I suppose it's possible
that several spent rods of uranium isotope
have been accidentally
stored in the cellar.
- See, that would explain it.
- Yeah, but it's not very likely, is it?
- Would it be a health hazard?
- Oh no no no, course not.
No, as long as you didn't
mind your hair and teeth
dropping out and you
prematurely dying from cancer.
- This is worse than I thought.
- We could all be infected.
- Well, we've got to do something.
- I'll go and call dad to send a limo.
- Have you notified the authorities?
- You mean, like, the army?
- But, Miss Murphy would be a good start.
- We've been through this, Tara.
There's nothing down
there, we looked remember?
- But we could all shrivel up and die!
- Tara, I said Hannah looked radioactive,
not that she was radioactive.
- We should check.
That cellar could be
a major health hazard.
- Cellar?
Don't go into the cellar.
(door whooshes open)
- How on earth could
the light that you saw
be responsible for Hannah's sickness?
- She's definitely
sunburnt, that's for sure.
Look, Miss Murphy!
(mysterious whir) It's
exactly like I saw before,
I told you, didn't I!
- Stand back.
(electrical mystical whirring)
(yelling in warlike fashion)
(comedic tune)
Brett?
- So that's why she borrowed my bikini.
- Why on earth would you
want to have a suntan?
Especially when there's an
important exam at stake.
- I guess that means I flunked it then?
- Well that depends on
how well you do next week
when you resit the exam.
- Thanks, Miss Murphy.
- You don't deserve it.
This obsession young girls have
with being suntanned, it's ridiculous.
I don't know what came over you.
- It was just a spur of the moment thing.
I just, lost control of myself.
- Well, don't let it happen again.
- No, Miss.
(mysterious tune)
(electrical mystical whirring)
(upbeat music)
