- It's a monster.
- Oh, a really scary one.
Hey, what do you know about this monster? He eats families.
It's funny, when I went out with him, he told me he was in video.
- Melissa.
- You know where he goes to eat? He hits this monster joint.
You know, he orders teachers, bicycles, CDs.
He's too scary for me.

- What? - Oh, no.
- What? I don't think I'm not ready for this.
- I am not ready for this.
- What aren't you ready for? A date, okay? A date.
- Ellyn, she - Ellyn? Ellyn wants to go out with you? - Ellyn hates you.
- What do you mean, she hates me? How can she hate me? She wants me to meet this person.
Unless she hates this person and she wants to get even.
Wait a minute, she's fixing you up? Yeah, you know her chiropractor, the one who helped her with the herniated disk.
- Oh, that's great.
- It is? Yeah.
You're not going, of course.
No, you just said it was great.
It is but it isn't.
It's too soon.
You're still separated.
Let's work.
Have you ever been, like, fixed up? - Once.
- Was it terrible? Uhh, it was horrible.
Well, did she have a mustache, what? Yeah, it was a big thick one.
I made her shave it, and then I married her.
Forgot about that.
So, Michael, come on.
So what? - You think it's too soon? - Do you? - Do you? - Do you? - I think I do, yeah.
- You do? Yeah, I think I do, but I'm not you.
And, Elliot, I just don't know.
- Let's work.
- Yeah, let's work.
You know what time it is? - 1:15.
- 1:15? Ethan's just getting out of gym class.
- Huh? - Dodge ball.
So the big money question is: What is the capital of Montana? The capital of Montana is, uh The capital of Montana is, um Think it over carefully.
Um.
Come on, guys.
Uh, Joe! Joe, Montana.
You guys are so dumb.
Helena.
I knew that.
Ethan, turn off the computer.
It's time for bed.
Did you hear me? I'm not deaf.
Good, so turn it off.
I said turn it off.
Look, I will give you five seconds to get to bed.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
- I said go to your room right - Mommy! Uh, Britty, did you wet your jammies? You just went to the potty a few I am not kidding, Ethan.
Come on, sugar.
Oh, look at this room.
Why can't you pick some of this up? You know, you have got to try harder.
You're getting to be just Come on.
Come on.
Let's go to bed now.
Let's get it Ethan.
Ethan, tell me, what do you want? A story.
A story.
Okay.
We'll have a story.
How about Runaway Bunny? Yuck.
Stuart Little? Forget it.
Look, I've made two suggestions.
You're already late for bed and you know that.
If you want a story, then you help me decide which one, okay? - The Prince.
- The Prince? Which book is that in? - It's not a book.
- Do I know that story? - No.
- Well then, who does? Dad.
Oh.
Well, um, you know, I have some good stories of my own.
Oh, I know one.
- I I - Forget it.
Good night.
Yo! - Hello? - Hi.
Hi.
Hello.
I'm out right now, but you have 30 seconds to leave me a message and I'll call you back.
Uh, hi.
This is Ellyn's friend Elliot.
She said to call, so, uh, hi.
Um, maybe sometime if you're not busy, we could get together, we could have some dinner or something.
My number is 555-6301.
No wait, wait.
That's my wife's I mean, that number's been disconnected.
That number's not happening.
Uh, my work number is 555-5104 and, uh, so So long.
That was great.
That was fun.
- Hi.
- Hi.
What's wrong.
You actually look glad to see me.
- No.
- Well, that makes me feel better.
- No.
It's just - Look, if this is a bad time, I can just get some of my clothes and kiss the kids good night.
- No, it's just Ethan.
- What do you mean? Is there something wrong? - Is everything okay? - No, nothing's wrong.
Well, where is he? I want to see him.
- He's asleep.
- Why is he asleep? You knew I was coming.
You could have kept him up.
He's a little boy, he needs his sleep.
I know he's a little boy, Nancy, but you knew when I was coming, - you could have kept him up - Elliot.
Um, Elliot, do you know some story about a prince? Yeah, of course I do.
It's Ethan's favorite story.
What happens in it? There's this pri Can I get a beer or something? - Sure.
- All right, there's this prince and there's this forest.
And the prince goes into the forest to save the kingdom.
And the kingdom Now the kingdom can be anything you want it to be.
Um, there's monsters You gotta have monsters because you know Ethan loves monsters But they gotta be furry ones 'cause he doesn't like slimy, okay? Furry, not slimy.
I got it.
Right.
And the prince, he wears chain mail.
- Chain mail.
- Okay, and the sound of the forest This is real important Sounds like You know what it is? Remember when we took him hiking with us? And it was the sound of those quivering aspens that he loved so much, remember that? - Yeah, I was there.
- Yeah, I know you were.
Um, yeah.
Thanks.
Thanks.
I think I've got it.
Are you sure he's okay? Yeah, I said I can handle it.
Okay, fine.
That's fine.
I'll just get some of my clothes, and I'll look at the kids one time, and Do you know where that black jacket is of mine? All right, just one quick look.
Okay, we can do this.
I am sure that we can do this.
Okay, release the shutoff valve.
Okay.
Now, what we've got to do You force it.
You force it, you bang it, you swear, and then you call a professional.
I learned that from Michael.
Is this joint threaded? Of course it is.
Look at that threading.
Okay, we've got the tape, we've got the rag.
Oh, where's the epoxy? Do you see the epoxy? Uh, oh I got it.
Um, so is Ethan doing better? Better? What's better? Happier? I don't know.
Last night Um, where is the pipe clamp? Do you see the pipe clamp? Oh, think so.
I mean, last night I'm putting him to bed, right? And he completely challenges me, which I, of course, take personally.
Yeah, you can just see him with a little red beard, can't you? Oh, really.
Taught by experts.
See, the thing is I know that he really needs me right now.
He He thinks that there is this monster in his closet.
And what am I supposed to tell him it's not there? It is there.
It just moved from our bedroom to his.
Oh.
Oh, I'm sorry, sweetie.
I was gonna get you some apple juice, wasn't I? What are you making? Some eggs? Here, just a minute.
Let me get you some juice.
Ethan? Hey, Ethan, I got you some hot dogs for dinner tonight, okay? Ethan? Hey, Ethan? Hi.
You know, it is really funny, but I have been thinking about that story all day.
You know, the one about the prince? And well, I couldn't tell it to you last night because I didn't really know it, - but I know it now, so - How? Well, it doesn't really matter, but I know it and, um, I think I know enough of it that, if you would help me out, I'd really appreciate that.
Do you think that you could do that? Maybe help me out a little bit here? All right.
Um, I know there was a prince, and I know there was this kingdom that was in trouble because something was gone.
Something that the people really needed.
And And the only one that could help them was, um, this prince.
And he had to go into the woods, I know that.
And there was this monster there that was really scary.
But what I don't know is what was missing? What did he have to go and find? Do Do you know that? I know what it was.
Maybe it was a rose.
The most beautiful rose in the whole land.
It was not.
Okay, fine.
No.
No rose.
It was, um, broccoli.
Magic broccoli.
Please.
So come on, Ethan, help me out.
What was it? You're so dumb.
It was the sun.
Oh.
The sun.
Ethan? Do you maybe want to do some more of the story? No.
Okay.
Maybe tomorrow.
- She won't call.
- She'll call.
No, she won't.
All right, she won't.
- See? - Elliot, she's busy.
She's working.
Give her a break.
There's a lot of herniated disks out there.
Ow, Elliot.
Do you have to clip your fingernails in here? - Sorry.
All done.
- Good.
Elliot.
Michael, give me a break, okay? I'm a little nervous today.
Personal hygiene makes me relax.
Why be tense? It's dinner, it's talking, it's heavy petting.
Well, that makes me feel great.
Great.
What? You don't want to miss those nose hairs, do you? - Janine's at lunch.
- You get it.
- You get it.
- Come on, Mike, please? Mike, Mike, Mike! Suicide line, please hold.
Uh, yeah, one sec.
It's her, Elliot.
I hear crunching and moaning in the background.
Shh! Hello? Hi.
Hi, yeah.
Yeah, good.
Tomorrow night? Uh, no, no, no, no.
That's fine.
It was just so soon, so A movie? Yeah.
Um, sure.
That Okay, and dinner? That sounds That's a classic combo.
Sure, we could Uh, what, like Chinese? Okay, okay.
What, Thai? All right, what, like ribs maybe? You probably want to stay away from ribs.
You know, being a chiro and everything.
Okay.
Yeah, no, no.
That sounds good.
I like that.
Aah no.
Good.
It's a great place.
I mean, I've never been there, but I know where it is.
So, um, okay, great.
I'll see you tomorrow night.
Okay.
All right.
Good.
Bye.
Well, that was easy.
See? Mike.
Mike, go.
Go for me.
Please go for me, Mike! You can pretend you're me.
I'll give you all the money for five years, please! - Did she sound nice? - Yeah.
I don't know how I can do this.
I mean, how do you Should I do this? Hi.
Hi.
How you doing? What? Nothing.
Nothing.
We were, you know, just working.
I've got some things.
- What things? - That I have to do.
- So I'll do them.
- Do them.
The things.
Um, I'm sorry to have to bother you here.
Oh, come on.
That's all right.
- How are the kids? - They're fine.
- Britty's fine.
- How's Ethan? He's fine, too.
Look, I've got to get back to Strawbridge's.
I was buying the kids some clothes, and they rejected my MasterCard.
I paid more than the minimum.
I'll show you.
It's in the files.
Um, the lady's waiting.
Did you pay the Visa? Yeah, I paid it.
Here, you want it? Um, yeah, please.
I brought you your mail, and here's a change of address card so you'll start getting your mail at your own place.
Great.
So how's Ethan? I told you, he's fine.
Are you sure? I already told you I can handle it.
Of course you can handle it, it's just sometimes it's like when he broke his arm, right? I mean, he didn't tell us about it.
Sometimes he seems fine, but he's not fine.
I mean, he's my son, too, Nancy.
- I know that.
- All right.
Well, then just let me know.
- Let you know what? - Just let me know when there's something wrong! Just let me know what's going on! - Okay.
All right.
Fine.
- Please, just let me know.
Can I have the credit card? Yes.
Take it.
- I - Take it.
Take 'em all.
Mommy! Mommy! Honey, what is it? Ethan? Ethan.
What? What's the matter? There.
Oh, the monster? Oh, here, let me see if he's in your closet.
Is it there? No.
Nothing's there.
You You wanna come take a look? Okay.
Come on.
Let me show you.
You come with me.
We can go look together.
- Look, see - No.
No? Come here.
Come here, my big boy.
Ohh.
So Once upon a time, long, long ago, there was a kingdom, which was really a pretty nice kingdom.
There were castles and moats and this beautiful forest where the wind made a sound like whoooooo.
But there was this one problem.
Someone was stealing the sun.
I mean, just a little piece every day but those pieces were beginning to add up and people were getting a little worried.
I mean, that was bad enough, but you know, what was even worse was that the person who was gonna go into the woods and find this bad guy and the missing pieces was gonna have to go into the woods and maybe get eaten by this horrible furry monster, right? - Right.
- And he had horns, this monster, and fangs and No fangs, just big teeth.
Right.
Right.
So was there anyone brave enough to go into the woods and face this monster? The boy.
Oh, right.
The prince.
So the prince started out on a journey.
Was he alone? No.
Well, who was with him? The princess.
Oh.
What was her name? Stupidhead.
Of course.
Princess Stupidhead, the fairest princess in the land.
Oh, but she was much too young to go into the forest with the brave prince, right? So what did he do with her? The leaf lady.
Hey, it's good to see you.
I've been waiting.
Ooh, sorry.
- Hello.
- Hi.
Oh, if I'd waited any longer, I would have turned into fertilizer.
So you're the guy for the job, eh? I'm the guy.
Well, I do hope you find that person who's been stealing the sun, because actually, quite frankly, I'm getting a little bit tired of all this darkness! What about her? She can't do a big job like that.
She can't do a big job like that.
I could look after her.
You could? Save the kingdom, and it's the least I could do.
You are going to save it? I'm gonna try.
You're going to try? Who else is there? Come on.
Come on.
- Good point.
- Thanks.
Speaking of points, you'll need a sword.
Where's your sword? I've got a sword here somewhere.
Aha! What is this? "Please return to King Arthur"? Sorry.
After 90 days, we're not responsible.
All right.
Uh, kneel.
I do hope I remember how to do this.
I hereby dub thee A name.
A name.
I need a name.
- Ethan.
- Ethan.
Very good.
Right.
I hereby dub thee.
Sir Ethan, the brave and courageous! Go forth, brave knight.
Fear not this forest nor what you find within.
Fear not.
Go forth.
Though darkness rules, the sun will soon return, triumphant, bright.
Go forth and fill our world once more with light.
Go forth.
We look to you to end our sudden night.
All right, that's it, then.
Get up.
I'll keep the princess as a deposit, if you don't mind, you know, for the sword and, uh Well, good luck, sir.
- Good luck.
- I'll need it.
No, you won't.
Farewell.
Come, then.
Sir Ethan, be well.
And so he left the princess, and now he was on his own.
He knew he would need all his courage.
And this was the most dangerous journey he would ever have to go on.
There might be monsters, and who knows what else.
And he could not come home, not until he found the sun.
And so he was off, through the leaves and trees, into the deep dark woods.
- Chocolate chips - Hey, Mom? - What, sweetie? - You know what? - What? - That's what.
- Hey, Mom? - What? - You know what? - What? Sometimes buildings fall down on people.
Oh, yeah? Well, it happens to be extremely rare.
What are you drawing? - You can't see it.
- Yes, I can.
Get back here! Yes, I can.
- I'm gonna get - Aah! I got you! Where do you think you're going? Aah! Oh, come on! Could I see it, pretty please if I ask so nicely? Please? - No.
- If I ask very, very, very very, very nicely? - No.
- Very, very, very aah! No, no, no, no.
Oh, Ethan.
You have been drawing that monster again.
Oh, are you sure that prince wants to go into the forest and see that guy? What's that? Oh.
Did you draw this? That is beautiful.
Oh, that is really cool.
Um, would it be all right if I add some leaves? Great.
Thank you.
Why don't you, um, help me? Wanna add some leaves? Great.
That's perfect.
Oh, you're doing so good.
Yeah.
Oh, I know, why don't we put some more over here? I bet the prince was getting awful sleepy.
He lay down beside the tree, and he took a nap.
What? What? What? What is it? Do you want to stop now? Okay.
Well, maybe we can do some more tomorrow, okay? You know, I was thinking, maybe if we work together, maybe we could make a little book out of some of these drawings.
Would you like that? Me, too.
You know, I gotta go see Britty.
She's making those cookies in the kitchen.
Why don't you just keep on drawing and then you call me if you need me, okay? - Mom? - Yeah? Does Dad like me? Of course he does.
Then, why did he shout Then why did he shout about me? Was I being bad? Oh, no, baby.
No.
No, that's not it.
Sweetie, that's not it.
That's not what it was.
Oh, no.
Why do we eat these things? Because they're bad for us.
Because Because Philadelphia is famous for its cheese steak.
It's not a problem, Elliot.
Watch this.
Watch this.
- What are you doing? - It's not a problem.
I know something about clothes.
Watch this.
Look.
She'll never notice.
Looks really natural, too.
Hi.
I have no idea.
Hi.
I'm Michael Steadman.
Hi, Michael.
You must be Elliot.
Yeah.
Hi.
Elliot Weston.
How are you? Oh, I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
Here.
Thanks.
Oh, I'm Sharon Berman.
- Hi, Sharon.
Sharon? - Yeah.
So Sharon.
Tonight Sharon.
- Right.
- Hi.
- How are ya? - Is this weird, because - No.
- Maybe I shouldn't have popped in like this.
But I just thought that if I popped in like this that I could take away some of the horrible part of a blind date and everything.
- Right.
- You could see that I was normal and I could see that you What? Nothing.
Is that the right chair for you? What do you mean? Well, no, I just mean that do you have any lower back pain or numbness down the leg? Yeah, now that you mention it.
I'm sorry.
I'm not in my office.
How's Ellyn's disk? It's here, in my bag.
She wanted you to have it.
How sweet.
You should keep it, though.
She already gave us her spastic colon.
Right.
Right.
It just kept moving across the desk.
We couldn't get any work done at all, you know.
- It's terrible.
- Hello? - So how long have you been a chiropractor? - Oh, hi.
How you doing? Uh, yeah.
Yeah, he is.
Wait a second.
Something else.
What? What? - Nancy.
- What? Nancy.
It's Nancy.
She says it's important.
Excuse me.
- Sharon.
Sharon.
This - Yeah? Tonight? Yeah, it would be nice if you could do it tonight.
- Tonight, huh? - Tonight, what? Is there a problem with tonight? No, no, no.
Why should there be a problem? Just, put him on the phone.
Let me talk to him.
Look, just come.
Just do that.
Nancy, come on, just let me talk to him.
I mean, I'll take him to school tomorrow, I'll pick him up, I'll bring him to the office.
He loves the office.
So you're not gonna do it? Nancy That's what you're saying.
Just, please.
Just let me talk to him, okay? Look, he told me he thinks you hate him.
So you come when you want.
He tries to get away, but he Oh, that's disgusting.
He jumps into a lake full of throw-up! Ethan, that's enough.
And in the lake there's eyeballs and more guts! - More than a hundred! - More than a hundred? - More than a hundred! - It's the revengers! I'm gonna get you! I'm gonna eat you! - I'm gonna eat I'm - Hey, don't get him overexcited.
- Whoo! Whoo! - Elliot.
I'll never get him to bed tonight.
I'm hungry.
I want my supper.
I'm gonna have an Egg McEthan.
Is he here? Is he here? Ethan? What? What are you feeding him, sugar cubes? Listen, Nancy, really I should go.
Then go.
Come on, Nance.
Give me a break, will ya? Nancy, what? At least I'm here, I'm trying.
He's just a little hyper, that's all.
Fine.
If you want to toss him a crumb, give it to me, I'll toss it for you.
Nancy, if you wanted to fight, you should have told me.
I would have been here hours ago.
- I don't wanna fight with you.
- All right.
Well then, fine.
Wonderful.
Ethan? Come on, pal.
Let me find ya.
I'll take you to the movies tomorrow.
I'll give you money.
I'll buy you a car.
Maserati.
Ferrari.
Ethan? Come on, Ethan! All right, look.
I tried.
Um, give him a kiss and tell him I'll pick him up in the morning and take him to school, okay? - Fine.
- Ethan! You sure you don't want to give your dad a kiss goodbye? I'm leaving now.
Okay, I'm leaving! On the count of three.
1, 2, 3! Bye.
- Hi.
- Hi.
Is everything okay? Yeah.
Pow! Pow! Pow! Hey, pal.
I was looking for ya.
Ethan! Ethan! Oh, God.
Ethan, Ethan, come here, pal.
Ethan? Ethan? Ethan? Nancy? - Ethan? - Nancy! - Are you okay? - Nancy! Ethan, do you want to talk to me? Go away.
Go away.
Go away.
Ethan, what's wrong? What happened? Go away.
Go away.
Go away.
Go away.
Sweetie, what's wrong? Just breathe into it.
- And whooo.
- Ahhh.
So any better? Uh, yeah.
Yeah, I think so.
Thanks.
- It's nothing.
- Yeah, like this whole date tonight.
No, I didn't mean that.
I don't feel that.
- You don't? - No.
And besides, Ellyn warned me.
What do you mean? Why? What'd she say? I'm just kidding.
I'm still worried about you back.
The way you tensed up in the car.
Yeah, that was weird how that happened all the sudden.
Elliot, these kinds of things don't happen all of a sudden.
They build up over time.
Trust me, these hands know all.
So you're saying I got lucky tonight that you were here? Maybe.
Elliot, thank you.
- For what? - For tonight.
- I had a good time.
- Oh, come on.
No, really.
I mean it.
I loved hearing those stories about your kids.
He looks like you, your little boy.
I mean, I only saw him for a second, but - You think so? - Yeah.
I think he's gonna be a real heartbreaker.
Oh, God.
I miss him so much.
I wish there was a body part you could adjust for that.
I wish there were, too.
So, um, what are you going to tell Ellyn? That it was great.
And, uh, that we're going to see each other again.
- We are? - Yeah.
In one week, in my office.
No heavy lifting.
Do your exercises.
And tell your partner to watch his posture.
There's something a little off.
Hi.
- What you doing? - Nothing.
Then maybe you want to talk about stuff.
You know, if you want.
Like, about tonight.
You're dead.
You're dead.
You're dead.
Well, then maybe You know, what I think we should do is try and finish the story.
And if you want to help me, that would be great.
But even if you don't want to, here it goes.
When we last left the prince, he was really lost, and the forest was very scary.
And even though the prince was very brave, he was still a little worried.
So he lay beside the tree, and he took a nap.
No.
Tell me.
Grrr! Oh, no.
Grrr! - Don't leave.
- Oh, I won't.
- Don't leave me.
- Oh, it's okay, baby.
I won't.
I won't.
I'm here, sweetie.
Oh, I'm right here.
Oh, I'm right here, baby.
Ethan, look at him.
I mean, really look at him.
- Can you? - Yeah.
Yeah? Oh.
Stop! What? You're not afraid of me? No.
Really? Really.
Ohh.
Then could you do me a favor? - What? - Look.
I have been in the forest for so long, and it's really dark and scary.
And to top it off, I hurt my stupid paw.
But why am I telling you this? You don't care.
- You can't help me.
- I can.
Yeah? How? For your information, I happen to have a couple magic Band-Aids with me.
Hey, it works.
It doesn't hurt anymore.
But I should test it out.
Give me five! All right! Thanks a lot.
That was smart, bringing that magic Band-Aid.
I know.
So they became friends, huh, the prince and the monster? - Yeah.
- Yeah.
Have some of this.
It's your teacher.
It's very tasty.
You know, my friend, I still can't believe that you and me are both in this forest looking for the same thing.
Yeah, that's pretty weird.
Say, do you like brownies? Do you have some? No.
I was just asking.
Do you like potato chips? The ruffled kind.
I like those.
- You know what? - What? That was my very favorite story ever.
- Really? - Really.
And now it is time for my little prince to get into bed.
Come on.
Come on, sweetie.
Under the covers.
Get these little covers on you.
Come on.
There you go.
You know what? - What? - I love you.
- Mom? - Yeah? Can you tell me one more story? Oh, it is so late.
Please? Okay.
Which one you want to hear? The day I got born.
Oh, you don't want to hear that one again.
Did you want a boy or a girl? Oh, I wanted a boy.
And when you came out of my tummy, oh, I was so happy.
Good night, sweetie.
Don't let those bedbugs bite.
You changed it.
Yeah.
Yeah, I Come on.
We wanted a boy.
And when you were in my tummy, every night, every night your daddy would lean down and he would whisper, "I love the baby.
I love the baby.
" And then you were born and there you were.
And they lay you right on my tummy.
And oh, we were so happy.
And Daddy Daddy leaned down and he whispered, "We love the baby.
" And you looked up, and you smiled, because you had heard that so many times before.
You ready to go to sleep now? - Yeah.
- Okay.
Yeah.
Me, too.
Come on.
You want me to look in that closet one more time? It's okay.
Okay.
- Hi.
- Hi.
He's amazing.
- That's good.
- She's adorable.
I know.
Nancy, if there's any more stuff I'll I'll let you know.
Thanks.
Hey, you moved this chair.
Does it look okay there? Yeah, it looks fine.
It's the same chair.
It's just in a different place.
- Nancy? - Hmm? These are good.
Yeah, they are.
He gets it from you.
You think so? Could I get one of these? I could frame it.
I'll get it framed for you.
You'd just forget to pick it up.
Probably.
Give Britty a kiss for me, okay? Tell her I love her.
I will.
Elli you're a good father.
Really? - Bye.
