Mission: Impossible (1988) s01e19 Episode Script

Bayou

(Woman panting) (dogs barking) (grunting) (gasping) (sobbing) (hisses) (whimpers) (dog whimpers, woman gasps) (panting) (dog whimpers) (gasps) (panting) Please don't.
Don't what? (Gasps) Hurt you? That's not for me to do, girl.
That's something Mr.
Morgan would like to do.
(Gasps) (grunts) (sniffles) So this is the runner? I just wanted to go home.
I won't do it again.
(Sniffles) I'm sorry.
Oh, no, no, not yet you're not sorry, but you will be when you feel the price of running.
-(Whip cracks) -(screams) (theme music playing) (foghorn blows) (grunting) ASSISTANT DIRECTOR: Cut.
That's a print.
Okay, everybody, that's lunch.
- One hour.
-(buzzing) Is it true that film production is on the rise in the Bay Area? You can't beat this city for a backdrop.
Yeah, well, that'd be fine with me.
I've been a movie buff ever since I was a kid.
Well, if you like film history, there's a book in the prop cage you might find interesting.
(Beeping) MALE VOICE: Good morning, Jim.
This is Diane Martin, the 18-year-old daughter of a noted Houston industrialist.
One week ago, she disappeared while spending a weekend in New Orleans.
Her wealthy father believes she's been kidnapped and has been waiting for a ransom demand.
That demand may never come.
We believe she has fallen victim to this man-- Jake Morgan.
Authorities think he is responsible for the disappearance of over 100 young women during the past two years, but they have yet to prove anything against him.
We believe he is the main supplier for an international white slavery ring that sells women to the highest bidders in Asian and African countries.
Your mission, Jim, should you decide to accept it, is to rescue Diane Martin and prove that Morgan is in fact guilty, thereby ending his trade in human flesh forever.
As always, should you or any of your IM Force be caught or killed, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions.
This disc will self-destruct in five seconds.
Good luck, Jim.
(Rapid beeping) (hissing) (Dixieland jazz playing) (playing slow jazz tune) Hey, hey, that sounds good.
(Exhales) Well, I'm kind of rusty, Jim, but I guess it's like riding a bicycle.
It don't take long to get back with it, you know.
(Chuckles) You all set at the club? Yeah, it just so happens that the band's trumpet player had to leave town suddenly.
We'll be sitting in tonight.
Good.
Jake Morgan-- he'll be a tough nut to crack.
He's rich and he's ruthless.
So where do we begin? Right here at the Jambalaya Jazz Club.
It's on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter.
Now, Morgan owns a chain of these clubs all across the Deep South, but this one is where Diane Martin was last seen before she disappeared.
Hmm, most likely a front for his slave trade operation.
Yes, and it's run by this woman.
NICHOLAS: Ah, Pepper Leveau.
Now, it's believed she targets the girls of the club, then moves them on to Morgan.
She's his right-hand lady and absolutely loyal to him.
We've got to find a way to drive a wedge between the two of them.
I think voodoo will do just that.
- Voodoo? - The black magic religion practiced in the bayou backcountry.
Well, Pepper Leveau was born and raised there, and it's well known she believes in voodoo ritualism.
We'll use that belief to our advantage.
Now, Nicholas, once Grant gets the information on how they operate, you will pay a visit to Morgan and make him an offer he can't refuse.
Right, Jim.
Ah, one more thing.
Morgan must keep some kind of record of his transactions.
If we can get our hands on that, we may be able to trace the whereabouts of the other missing girls, because Diane Martin is not the only one who needs saving.
Shannon, how do things look for Pepper Leveau? SHANNON: King of Swords.
Not very good.
(Indistinct chatter) (up-tempo jazz playing) (click, whirring) Just who is the new horn player? PEPPER: I don't know him; he's just filling in for Mel for the next few nights.
MORGAN: Keep a watch on him.
I don't like guys that drop out of the blue just when we're about to make a shipment.
So we're going to move ahead with the ten we've got? In 48 hours.
$2 million for ten.
Why, that is high-end money, and I cannot afford to keep my buyers waiting.
Come here and have a look at this.
You ever seen her in here before? PEPPER: No.
See what her story is.
She could be a good addition to our shipment.
I'll see you at the plantation.
I don't think I've seen you here before.
That's 'cause I haven't been here before.
I'm Pepper Leveau.
I manage this place.
What part of town are you? What's with you, woman? The Devil.
Violence and enslavement are the influences that will mark your downfall.
He's black magic, evil.
(Song ends, crowd applauds) He is crossed by the King of Swords.
With the Devil, he is a sadist.
A dangerous person will betray you.
Get out.
But the cards have you in danger from someone close by.
I said get out.
(Door opens) (door closes) You beware of her, Sister Leveau.
Believe me, I know.
She is best left alone.
(car door opens) (door closes) What do you want? I want to speak to Mr.
Morgan.
I have an offer to make him.
I wonder if you might be kind enough to check these gentlemen out.
(Bird squawking in distance) Hey! It's a cruel world, Mr.
Morgan.
We all need protection.
Aristotle Naxos.
I represent an Asian consortium that's interested in purchasing your latest shipment.
I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about.
Oh, come now, Mr.
Morgan, neither of us is interested in playing games where money is involved.
Your current offer is $2 million.
We're prepared to pay $3 million.
Now, I am not saying that, uh, I have the merchandise you require.
If I did, why would I throw over those gentlemen that I have been dealing with for the past several years? Because money moves the world, Mr.
Morgan.
You can't help but be interested.
I would have to see the money.
After I see the merchandise.
Now, if the quality's worth the price, why, then you'll see the money.
And if I am interested in your offer, I will contact you.
Good afternoon, sir.
Good afternoon.
(Playing mid-tempo jazz) Now, you behave yourself.
(Pepper laughing) Miss Leveau? Yes.
My name is Kane.
Sam Kane.
I'm a private investigator from Houston.
Oh.
What can I do for you, Mr.
Kane? Well, I'm investigating the disappearance of a young woman.
She was last seen in this club-- Diane Martin.
Sorry.
Can't help you.
Hm.
That surprises me.
Oh? Why is that? Because I think the owner of this club is mixed up in a kidnapping ring that's responsible for the disappearance of a number of young girls.
(laughs) Mr.
Morgan? No.
He's as good a man as you can find.
(Phelps chuckles) You ever seen that woman before? Yes, I've seen her-- what about it? She's part of the deal.
She gets the girls going with a little voodoo hocus-pocus, then she says good-bye, and the big guy with the blond hair takes over and does the dirty work.
Why are you telling me this? Because I'm gonna bust this case wide open And retire on the bonus I collect.
And I need another pair of eyes, in return for which I will see that you are not implicated when the roof falls in.
Think about it, Miss Leveau.
This is my card.
You can reach me at that number.
Hey! (Grunts) Get in! Come on! Get in! -(Grunts) - Let's go! (Tires squeal) What the? Max? What happened? Are you all right? They've got Nicholas.
(Door unlocking) (door creaking open) (woman gasps) Come on.
(Woman coughing) (woman crying quietly) (woman coughing quietly) (exhales) Get up.
(Woman gasps) That's very nice.
I think that you'll find that they scrub up very well.
Please help us.
Help you? (chuckles) I'm gonna buy you.
Well, now, have you seen enough? Yes.
I'll talk to my people tomorrow.
You can expect my call.
Blind him.
Good.
(Women crying, coughing) Good night, ladies.
(Crying, coughing) (door locking) GRANT: When you close the trunk, that'll immediately trigger the gas canister.
And how about the bullet hits? I'll do those next.
Fire left to right, then back, right to left.
Nicholas will have the remote control -to set off the squibs.
- Got it.
SHANNON: Thank God you're okay.
- What happened? - I've just had a private showing of Morgan's merchandise.
Well, do you know where they are? They blindfolded me.
All I could hear was the sound of water, possibly a river.
Oh, Jim we got to get to those girls.
We will.
Tomorrow, Sam Kane will tighten the screws on Mr.
Morgan.
PEPPER: I don't like it.
See, I told you grabbing that Martin girl was a mistake.
He is just a private investigator.
(Chuckles): He's not the police.
PEPPER: He's still dangerous.
What's all that he's saying about that white trash -in the club and the voodoo? - I do not know her, and I do not know anything about this voodoo nonsense.
Morgan If you were to cross me, I can make you a believer.
It is a mistake to threaten me, Pepper.
The gators are always hungry and you'd make a tasty meal.
(Vehicle approaching) (dogs barking in distance) (engine turns off, door opens) That's him.
That's Kane.
Get out the back.
I can handle him.
Well, now, I hope that you don't mind joining me while I feed my pets, Mr.
Kane.
No, no problem.
This plantation has been in my family since just after the ending of the War Between the States.
Well, it's very impressive.
Ah, heritage good breeding.
That's what makes for it-- good breeding.
Is that so? Why, it's a known fact, Mr.
Kane.
And here we are.
PHELPS: Interesting pets.
Aren't they? You know, their bite exerts a pressure of over 1,000 pounds per square inch.
I have been fascinated by them since one of them took off my leg.
(Thudding) And what is your game, Mr.
Kane? No game, Mr.
Morgan.
I've been hired to find a missing girl, and I think you had something to do with her disappearance.
Now I do not intimidate easily, and there's no use trying to scare Pepper when there is no proof to your accusation.
But there will be.
And Miss Leveau will leave you eventually because she will not want to go down when you hit the wall.
Better men than you have run up against me and failed.
I wouldn't be too sure about that.
Why then, you just think of this.
The pain was excruciating.
You just might not be so lucky as to just lose a leg.
I don't intimidate easily, either, Mr.
Morgan.
(growls) I'll see you around.
(Coughs) NICHOLAS: it's perfect.
Some eyebrows, a little fine-tuning, and, well, hello, Mr.
Morgan.
Nicholas it's ringing.
(Phone ringing) Morgan.
Oh, Mr.
Morgan, this is Naxos.
Why, isn't that good? I was just waiting on your call.
Yes, well, I've been instructed to close our deal at the price agreed to.
Fine.
And you'll bring the money? Well, part now, and the rest when the merchandise is in our possession.
(laughs) I'll buy it.
NICHOLAS: Good.
Till tomorrow, then.
Mm.
(Sighs) (crowd chatter) (vibraphone solo playing) - PEPPER: Mr.
Kane.
- Miss Leveau.
What brings you here? Well, I came to extend you an invitation to a ceremony.
What ceremony? A voodoo ceremony.
Mr.
Kane, I wouldn't mess around with that voodoo if I were you.
It's not the hocus-pocus you think it is, you know.
Well, that may be, but I think your boss is going to be there.
Oh, don't be ridiculous.
Remember I told you about Morgan and that woman being tied up with some kind of kidnapping ring? Tonight I may get the final proof that'll just button up this case, and if I were you, I'd want to know what was going on.
(Percussive beat plays) (woman screaming) (people chanting) (woman screams) (snake hissing) Le grand zombie.
The most evil of all the ceremonies.
I don't care about that.
That young girl over there.
(Camera shutter snaps) Well, guess who just joined the party.
Look.
PEPPER: Morgan.
Traitor.
(Chanting continues) The horn player from the club.
Yeah, they're all here, aren't they? (Snake hisses) L'appé vini, le grand zombie.
L'appé vini, pou fe gris-gris.
Walk, find, sleep without eating.
(Screaming) Zombie! (Grant screaming) (screaming) (Grant screaming) (people chanting over percussive beat) Scream of the undead.
I can't be here.
No! (Grant screams) No, no! (Chanting continues) (chanting stops) (exhales) How'd we do? You were excellent.
Grant, you're now officially a member of the undead.
Well, now all we have to do is get Pepper Leveau to join the club.
(Dogs barking) $1 million-- the difference between our deal and your last offer.
And the rest? As soon as my man tells me that the merchandise is on the freighter and confirms the destination.
Why, that's very good, Mr.
Naxos, but you try to cross me and I'll gator-bait you before you know what's happened.
What are you doing? I've come for some justice.
What? You and him and that voodooing white trash! I was loyal to you, Morgan, and you cut me out? Now I'm going to cut you! (Pepper grunting) Who is this woman? She used to be an employee of mine.
That's right, "used to.
" That inspector from Houston-- he's got you real good.
He's going to blow your whole operation wide open.
Now, what is this all about? Why, she's just hysterical.
She's become a liability.
I'll take care of this, Mr.
Naxos.
Go ahead, try and kill me.
You forget who I am? I'll come back again and again! I'll get you, Morgan, I'll get you.
You forget who I am.
My employers don't like complications, Morgan.
Now, you take that money, but if there is any trouble, we'll be back and then you'll have to worry about being gator bait.
(Pepper screaming) Why, then, you just take care of her and it'll smooth the way.
Oh, we'll take care of her, all right.
And who knows? She may even be worth the trouble of selling at auction.
(Spits) I'll see you burn, Morgan.
- NICHOLAS: But then again - PEPPER: No! We might just kill her.
- No! (gasps) -(aerosol sprays) (dogs barking in distance) Good day, Mr.
Morgan.
(Engine starts) GRANT: There's a tunnel under Morgan's place.
SHANNON: I think I've read about it.
Was it part of the Underground Railway system during the Civil War? Yeah, it was very active in this area, moving escaped slaves to routes up north.
- Hmm.
-All right, where is the other end of it? Well, it comes out about there in the bayou, half a mile from the plantation.
(Tires screech) Sleeping like a baby.
Till I get the images I need.
All according to plan? There's no doubt in Morgan's mind that Pepper Leveau is dead.
These were her last words.
PEPPER: I'll see you burn, Morgan.
Good.
Got it.
All right, we'd better get going.
We'll find the girls; let's hope you can find Morgan's records.
Yeah.
Okay, we'll try a dry run.
Then you can all go into your act.
(Whispers): Yes.
(Foghorn blows) Shannon, once we get started, wake her up.
SHANNON: Right, Jim.
Here we go.
(Soft rumbling) (creaking) (capsule snaps) Where, where am I? You Trash! How did I get here? I don't know how we got here.
You have no power here.
Le grand zombie-- its practice will kill you in the end.
Here's some food.
Damn you, I don't want food, I want out of here! (Gasps) (Shannon whimpering) You have no place to run, Miss Leveau.
You're on a freighter outside of New Orleans headed for Asia where no doubt you'll bring a solid price.
- What? - Well, you'll just fill out a less than satisfactory package.
Morgan double-crossed us all, so we don't have any girls.
I need something to deliver, so you two are it.
No.
Suppose I can give you the ten girls.
How? I know where Morgan's holding them.
You turn this thing around, I'll show you.
I don't think we can get the captain to turn about, Mr.
Naxos.
Where are they? An abandoned ship five miles south of the plantation on the river's edge.
-(gasps) - We're gonna drown.
- No! - We're gonna drown.
No, don't leave me, please.
(Screaming) (gasping) No, no.
(Gasping) (aerosol hissing) (grunting) (device trilling) Well, you know the location.
You'd better get in position.
GRANT: I found a tunnel, all right.
No luck with any records.
No safe, no hiding places whatsoever.
Well, he'll have to have it on him when he runs.
Maybe there's another place to look.
Now, Shannon, you get over to the club.
See if you can find anything in Pepper's office.
You're gonna need this.
- When it pulses, it's your cue to hit it.
-Right.
See you later I hope.
This should be ready to process.
-(Beeping) - Yep.
Mm-hmm, she'll make a good hologram.
(Gasps) (moaning) (grunting) (piano blues plays) (indistinct chatter) (phone rings) - She finally showed up.
- Good.
Watch her.
And don't let her leave.
I don't know who you are.
But you're mine now.
And you're going to wish that you never came near me.
(clicks) (dogs barking in distance) (tapping) Get the van to pick up the girls.
We leave for the harbor-- one hour.
Why don't you come in here, sit down and make yourself comfortable, hmm? And don't move.
(Gasps) I had all this cleared up! Who is doing this to me?! True believers are everywhere.
Shut up! That's me! You can be possessed.
The undead can be called.
I said shut up! Okay, Jim, we're gonna get in position.
Right, Grant.
Those are the two guys that jumped us outside the club.
Yeah.
I'd say we have a score to settle.
(Groaning) (gasping) It's all right, girls.
We're here to help you.
(Sighing and relieved laughter) (device beeps) Jim, we've got the girls.
Good work, Max.
Get 'em to a safe place.
Now we have to get Morgan's list.
(beeps) Grant? Yeah, go, Jim.
They've got the girls, and I'm about to wake Pepper.
Once she gets her bearings, it'll take her about 15 minutes to get to the plantation.
All right, we'll be ready for her.
I'll make my move when I hear them come from the house.
(Beeps) (capsule snaps) (moans gently) (sighs) Morgan! You have been causing me (hammer cocks) a great deal of trouble.
I don't know if you're worth trying to sell.
(Beeping) L'appé vini le grand zombie.
L'appé vini pou fe gris-gris.
Walk find sleep without eating.
The serpent is earth, and death is only the beginning.
Stop it! L'appé vini le grand zombie.
Man's soul is captured, and the undead are called.
Stop it! -(gunshot) -(gasps) (beeping) (whirring) PEPPER: I'll see you burn, Morgan! (Gasps) -(gunshots) -(glass shatters) (moaning) (yells) (groaning) (wailing) (Morgan moans) (moans) (Grant growls) (wailing) Morgan! No.
No.
You can't be.
You're dead.
I came back for you, Morgan.
(Gunshots) Please, please I saw them shoot you! You're dead! Shut up, traitor! (Moaning) You're the one who's going to be dead.
No, I'm sorry.
I'll give it all back to you, all of it.
The money, the girls.
I told you I would see you burn, and you will! (Gunshots) (hammer clicking) (moaning) (wailing) (indistinct radio transmissions) MAN: Hold it! Don't move! New Orleans Police! Uh-huh.
He had to have it on him when he ran.
A lot of girls will be grateful for that.
I'd say Mr.
Morgan has fed his pets for the last time.
Well, you know, these alligators just have no respect for good breeding.
