Moomin (1990) s01e23 Episode Script
Visitors in the Winter
Moomin
Even you, who always
tries to keep strong, -
will have moments when
you need to shed tears.
In those moments, just
cry your heart out, -
and then you will find that the
sadness quickly disappears.
Come, come here to where I am.
Come and hold out your
little hand to me.
I shall take you to
the world of dreams.
As long as you have an
honest heart, all is well.
Moominvalley's Winter Inhabitants
In the winter, most of the inhabitants
of Moominvalley stay fast asleep.
However, for some reason, Moomin and
My both woke up this one winter.
Ah, so good!
Mamma's strawberry jam
is simply the best!
I thought Mamma made too much, -
but with how things turned out, it's
really reassuring to have all this jam.
Look. I told you they'd be fast asleep.
I suppose we're the
only ones off course.
Why don't you try sledding
when it's so much fun?
I won't fit in that tray.
Then go look for something
else to sled with.
Later, later.
We're supposed to go to
Too-ticky, remember?
Come, I'll pull you all the way there.
Don't tell me you're afraid to
slide down from high places?
Don't be silly.
She's not here.
I wonder where Too-ticky went.
Isn't that her?
It would seem so.
She must be sliding around there.
Sliding?
She won't be able to move
that fast otherwise.
Oh, here she comes.
What were you doing far out there?
I went to see the sun.
You can't see the southern horizon
without going that far, right?
Did you see the sun?
Today the sun shined just
a bit above the horizon.
Hey, what are those
shoes you're wearing?
These are skates.
They're very useful for sliding on ice.
Oh won't you show me how
you slide with them again?
Why, sure.
So graceful!
That's it! I shall make
myself some skates.
That might prove difficult.
I'm sure I'll find a way.
As long as I can attach some
blades underneath my shoes, -
I should be able
to slide on ice.
I've been wondering about
this since we went in here
There's somebody else
here, isn't there?
You can tell?
Somebody's here? Where?
Looking for them won't help.
You can't see them.
How can they be here
when I can't see them?
I don't buy that.
Let me show you.
The invisible shrews.
Someone's on top of my head!
Do you understand now?
Those were the invisible shrews.
You may come down now.
But there were no such shrews when we
were here last summer. I'm sure of it.
Yes, you're right.
There are creatures in this world
who come out only in the winter.
They are all very timid
and strange creatures.
When the surroundings become deserted
and everything is covered in snow, -
when the nights are longer -
and most creatures are
asleep, they then come out.
I hardly knew anything
about winter, I suppose.
That's just how it is.
You have a long-held -
practice of hibernating
in the winter, after all.
Mamma and Pappa will
certainly be surprised -
once I tell them about
this come springtime.
Say, Moomin.
Yes?
We're going to wake up
tomorrow too, right?
Why would you ask that?
I don't want to sleep until
spring like Pappa and Mamma.
We woke up this morning, didn't we?
But we don't know that
we will tomorrow.
True.
Perhaps the winter fairy especially
woke us up only for these two days.
Hey.
If I don't wake tomorrow
morning, wake me up, alright?
Alright.
Let's go to sleep, shall we?
What if it's the other way around?
What if I wake up and you don't?
Oh, well, let's see
I don't mind sleeping all
the way 'til spring.
I'm going to wake up
even if I'm on my own.
My.
Where are you, My?
Hello.
I must say, this slope is
just perfect for skiing.
What're those attached to your feet?
Is that supposed to be a joke?
Huh?
I see, you really don't know.
Why would I ask if I already knew?
These are skis.
You watched me slide down
earlier, didn't you?
I certainly did.
Can you slide just as
fast on ice with those?
These are no match for skates on ice.
And what is that, if I may ask?
It's a boat for sliding on snow.
That slides really well, but if I'm not
mistaken, that is a tray, am I right?
Yes, you got that right.
Shall I teach you how to ski?
Oh, no need. I can learn just
fine by merely watching you.
Skiing is not that easy, you know.
I suppose not. But there's really no
need. I can learn fine by myself.
So, Mr. Rocky, does that mean you
live in the cold all year round?
That's right. I do so to train myself.
This jam is most delicious.
But can't you train your body
in spring and summer as well?
No, that won't work.
The cold is necessary to
truly strengthen your body.
You can tell you've trained enough
once you stop feeling the cold.
Have you stopped feeling
the cold, Mr. Rocky?
I'm sad to say that I have
yet to reach that level.
However, I still soak
in water once everyday.
It feels very good.
You bathe even when it's this cold?
The sea isn't far from it, is it?
Yes, but you cannot bathe in it.
It's frozen.
How about a river?
Yes, very near.
Didn't you see it on your way here?
Oh, that river, yes.
This jam is really delicious though.
Are perhaps you all out?
Not at all, there's quite
a lot left in the cellar.
Shall I get more?
No. I won't have any more right now.
I shall help myself
to more later though.
Until then, I shall go and take my
bath to help my stomach digest well.
I'm getting cold just by watching.
Mr. Rocky! Are you
certain you're not cold?
The water feels great!
You should join me!
I think I'll decline.
Excuse me, but what are you doing?
Hello. We are currently watching Mr.
Rocky swim.
He's really swimming. I see quite
eccentric people inhabit Moominvalley.
Mr. Rocky isn't from here, though.
How about you?
I came here to visit my brothers.
I am called Sorry-oo.
Oh, may I ask who your brothers are?
They're most likely hibernating though.
No. My brothers do not
sleep through the winter.
But the only ones who are
awake in Mooominvalley -
right now are me,
Little My over here, -
Too-ticky, and the invisible shrews.
Oh, and also Mr. Rocky who
only recently arrived here.
I believe my brothers reside
in the Lonely Mountains.
The Lonely Mountains?
That's strange. There are wolves there
but I don't think there are any dogs.
My brothers are those wolves.
Having jam after exercising makes
it all the more delicious!
We still have a lot of jam left so
please have as much as you'd like.
That news brings joy to my soul.
Sorry-oo, are you going to eat that?
Oh?
Um, please help yourself.
Well, thank you.
Are you perhaps feeling
worried about something?
Yes, in fact, I am.
Oh, well, that won't do.
Worries are the worst
poison to the body.
I am at a loss as to why you refer
to the wolves as your brothers.
But it's been that way
since the ancient times.
Dogs and wolves have
always been brothers.
You certainly resemble
each other physically, -
but I think you're as
different as different comes.
Whatever you say, I'm still going
to worry myself over wolves.
This one's a coward, I'm sure of it.
That's why he's so bent on thinking
that he's related to wolves.
Do you intend to go
and live with wolves?
Oh yes, if it's possible.
Sorry-oo, what do you think
about traveling with me?
I've always loved dogs.
But I
Well, do think about it.
I plan to stay in
Moominvalley for a while.
Excuse me, but do you
plan on staying here?
No, no, I don't intend on
staying in this house.
Digging a hole in the snow should
make for a comfortable home.
Is that how you've always camped out?
Sure have.
However, Moomin, I would at
least like to keep coming here -
for this raspberry jam,
if you don't mind.
Mr. Rocky, may I borrow
your shovel for a bit?
Certainly. What for?
I'd like to destroy this barrel.
Oh, why didn't you say so?
Is this destroyed enough for you, My?
It seems Mr. Rocky has taken
quite a liking to this jam.
Well, the jam Mamma makes
is very delicious.
Thank you, Moomin.
Too-ticky, do you know what skis are?
I certainly do. I've never
tried skiing though.
Mr. Rocky is going to
teach me how to ski.
Is that so?
But I can't move my
legs at all like this.
Once you get used to it, -
you won't find a better way than
this for moving around on snow.
Whoaaa, I'm moving.
Yes, yes. That's the way to go.
First, you must practice how to fall.
I'd prefer to learn how
not to fall though.
My has skis.
She made those out of
some barrel planks.
Well, then. These skis
should be easier to use.
Alright. Bend your elbows,
and lean forward.
Um, this slope's quite
difficult though.
Wouldn't it be better if I
started out on some flat area?
I suppose. Let's go to a lower
slope for your next try.
Off you go!
How pathetic.
Um, Mr. Rocky, this slope is
steeper than the last one
It's alright. The way
you fall is very safe.
Off you go!
Someone stop me!
It's easy! Just fall over!
Dynamic! Unique! Truly an art!
Somebody Somebody stop me!
Amazing, Moomin! One more time!
What are you doing, Sorry-oo?
My brothers are crying out.
The wolves aren't your brothers.
They must be calling me.
I'm going to try meeting
my brothers, after all!
Caught anything?
A bit.
Bad news. We're almost out of jam.
What of Mr. Rocky?
He still keeps on eating.
I wonder if he'll be staying for good.
I wonder too.
It might be nice if he would just
catch a cold and lose his appetite.
This violent snowstorm signals the end
of winter and the beginning of spring.
Hello, Moomin.
Oh, Mr. Rocky.
I'm sorry, but we don't
have any more jam.
Look, the jar's empty.
That was really delicious jam.
I am pained by that news,
but the truth is I -
have to tell you something
which pains me more.
Are you leaving?
Spring has come upon Moominvalley.
So, Farewell.
Farewell, Mr. Rocky.
I hope to see you again next year.
I um I'm your brother, Sorry-oo.
I've always dreamed of being
able to live with you.
I've always, always dreamed of it.
I'm quite a coward, but
I would be ever so glad
if you would let me join your com
pany
I understand. It can't be helped
then, I will have to give up.
Please feel free to eat me.
Well, hello there, Sorry-oo. Were
you perhaps waiting for me here?
Come, then. Let us go
on a fun trip together.
And slide!
Slide, and slide!
Slide
Slide!
Ta Tarata Slide! Ta Tarata Slide!
Slide
And, slide!
Slide!
Ah. My!
Spring's cannons have
been sounded, at last.
The ocean waves must be
pushing from far beyond.
Can My make it back?
Look out!
My!
Hold on to me, My!
Why, thank you, Moomin. Blast off!
Now, now, we're still quite
fine, Moomin. No need to hurry.
Over there, Moomin. Leap for it!
Do you see it now? As long
as you listen to me, -
there's absolutely nothing
to be afraid of, Moomin.
Oh, yes, I see very well. I'm never
going to rescue you ever again.
You can do it, Moomin! Just a bit more!
Hurry!
I'm back!
So cold!
You did really well, Moomin.
Come, let's warm you up by the stove.
Once again, spring has
come upon Moominvalley.
I have yet to hear the sound
of a harmonica from my room.
Spring is here, and yet
Snufkin has not come back.
Snufkin Will you never come back to
Moominvalley?
