Grandpa's Ghost

Come in, Edwin.
Where's your stuff? What stuff? You can't go fishing without a pole.
No, we're not going fishing.
We're going to the zoo and the baseball game.
Oh, that's nice too.
Yeah.
I don't want to be bothered.
It's me, Grandpa.
Well, then, get in here, Edwin! Hi.
Oh! Great place, San Diego.
I want to see the monkeys.
- Do you love monkeys, Edwin? - Yeah.
It'll be good to see 'em again.
Uh-huh.
I can't see enough of the little buggers.
How long since we were there? Three months.
Hmm.
Well, how do I look? You look good.
Well, snazzy's more like it.
Hah! Always try to look snazzy, Edwin.
- Don't forget my bag.
- Snazzy.
Two days.
We'll be gone two days.
I know that.
Edwin, I want to tell you something.
And we're going to a ball game- box seats, third base.
Better bring your mitt, Edwin.
It's all he talks about.
Yeah, he likes baseball.
Oh, I'm spending the night with Edwin, 'cause we're leaving at the crack of dawn.
She gets awful sore if I wake her up.
I get awful sore if you keep me up.
Don't let him keep you up too late.
Make sure you get your medicine.
I always take my medicine.
Let's go.
Do you need anything, Grandma? She never needs anything.
I could use some peace.
We'll just be upstairs, okay? She knows where you live.
Let's go! Edwin! Have a good time.
Come on, Edwin.
Put some heart into it.
Yazzah! In those days I just played everywhere.
Yeah.
Roadhouses, clubs, dance palaces, cocktail lounges.
Between jobs I'd go fishing off the pier.
Fish is good for you, Edwin.
Never forget that.
Oh, I like fish.
I was playing at this club right here in Los Angeles.
It's a restaurant now.
But I was sitting there, playing the piano, wearing my tuxedo, lookin' snazzy as hell- always try to look snazzy, Edwin- when Johnnie Ray said, "Get up here, Charlie, and sing these people a song.
" Well, it was the first time I had the spot.
Ahh, it was a Friday night.
Or was it Saturday? Well, it doesn't matter.
Um, now, remember about the fish, Edwin.
I will, I will.
Where was I? Oh, yeah.
Um, well, I was singing when I realized that someone was singing with me.
I looked around and saw this beauty at the table right in front of me, and we locked eyes and kept singing together.
When I was done I introduced myself, and we got married! Your grandmother made me a cake once shaped like a fish with musical notes on it.
It's our song, Edwin.
I haven't sung it to her in a long time.
L- I know that.
That's a nice story.
It's a great story.
Yeah.
You know what, Edwin? What? When we get back, I'm going to sing her our song.
You betcha.
You betcha.
Good night, Grandpa.
It sure was, Edwin.
It sure was.
Grandpa? Breakfast.
We gotta get goin'.
Let's go! Gran- Grandpa? Grandpa! Grandpa.
Hey.
You haven't left yet.
Uh, the thing is- I took him his breakfast, You'd better be leaving soon.
And, uh, I tried to wake him up, and he's dead, Grandma.
Don't say such things.
Grandma? Don't you worry about me.
I'm fine.
I have everything I need.
He went to sleep.
He didn't wake up.
I gave him his medicine.
I tried to take care of him.
He just didn't wake up.
I shook him.
Will you listen to me? enjoy yourselves.
Gran- He looks forward to these trips, Edwin.
Charlie.
Hello, Helen.
How you doin'? Charlie, you're here.
Oh, of course I'm here.
Where have you been? What? San Diego! Bumper to bumper traffic, and Edwin's car overheated.
Mm-hmm.
They don't make 'em like they used to.
No, they don't make anything like they used to, except the monkeys.
Did you have a good time? Well- I'm gonna take a nap, maybe, or maybe play some piano.
Tell Edwin I want fish for dinner.
Hey, Rudy! How are ya? We had a great trip.
Of course we went to the ball game.
Saw the damnedest double play.
Second baseman dropped a fly ball and threw the runner out at first.
Then the first baseman threw the runner out at second.
Top of the eighth, tie game.
Ha-ha! Padres won.
Ohh, aah! I hate this stuff.
Don't you hate this stuff? We are going out for dinner.
What? To Blackburn's.
Where we first met? Yeah, and I won't hear a word against it.
Boy! Damn! Is this a great time or what? Oh, it's a great time, Charlie.
I just don't know what's gotten into you.
Reminds me of that- that night in Hartford.
Do you remember that, Charlie? Uh, oh, yeah, sure.
I remember.
- Huh! - Uh, hey! You remember that cake you made me that one birthday? You remember that? Oh! Oh, the fish! That was silly! Mm-mm.
It was chocolate.
Oh! You know, - What? - Every time I go away to San Diego with Edwin, I think you should be coming with me.
You never said so.
But I'm saying so now.
Oh! If you insist.
We both do.
Oh, I know living with me hasn't always been easy.
Oh, Charlie.
No, no.
I know, I know.
But there's something you should know.
For 55 years, you've been my best girl, my beauty.
Charlie.
Helen? Hmm? Will you be mine always? Would you sing it for me, Charlie? Would you sing it again? Well- Hmm! Oh! As I remember it, the bandstand was right over there.
Now, you just sit right there.
How you doin'? Good morning, Grandma.
It's a great morning, Edwin.
Very good.
Very good.
It's the best morning I can remember.
Yeah? Charlie took me out last night.
Did he? He did, Edwin, to the place where we first met.
Oh, it was wonderful.
We had fillet of sole, just broiled, the way Charlie likes it.
Yeah? And we talked and talked.
We drank too much! And we danced.
Oh, Edwin, how we danced.
Hmm.
It was like a dream.
We were young again.
For a moment- just for a moment- it was the night we met.
Hmm.
Where is Grandpa right now? Oh, he's- he's in his study.
You just leave him be.
I'm gonna fix his breakfast this morning.
Okay.
I'll just be upstairs if you need anything then.
Mm-hmm.
Charlie.
Where's my breakfast? I feel like taking a walk today.
Let's go to the boardwalk.
We haven't done that in a while.
I'll have my breakfast and we'll go.
No! Grandma.
