The Precious Book

1
(cheerful upbeat music)
(cheerful strumming music)
(sheep baaing)
- Sheep manure is a
great source of energy.
Whole societies were powered by it.
- Oh if it was any more powerful
I think I'd be brain dead.
(blasting explosion)
What was that?
(gas hisses)
(clanks)
- The boiler room.
(machine whirring)
(gas hissing)
- Well, that was a big
one, miss, definitely.
- Can it be fixed do you think?
- Not this one, Miss. Murphy.
It's beyond redemption I'm afraid.
- Ah, Brett, just in time, you better
get some buckets and mops.
You've a right Mr. Cleanup here.
- Right.
- Are you sure it can't be patched up?
- [Seamus] It served us well
for the past 36 years, Miss. Murphy,
but now it's time for a new one.
- Uh, can't you put brainpower
to this Cormac.
- Oh that needs more
than brainpower anyway.
Old boilers aren't my line.
- I'll have to call a meeting
with the school trustees.
It won't be too pleased with this.
- [Mrs Toppit] Completely
destroyed you say?
- I'm afraid so how much is it
going to cost to replace it?
- Seamus McCracken estimates 20,000 or so.
- With this added to the school debts
we can no longer avoid facing up
to some harsh fiscal realities.
- Meaning?
- Meaning Mrs. Toppit we have no choice,
we're just going to
have to sell the school.
(clatters)
(dramatic music)
(bell rings)
- They can't do that can they?
- Well, Martin's dad reckons they can.
He says there's no other choice.
- But I thought Angus left the
school to the local council?
- Well, they never found a will,
so we didn't actually leave it to them.
But it was a hundred year lease,
now the hundred years is up.
- So now they can do
what they like with it.
- Exactly,
they're meeting of four
o'clock to make a decision.
- But this is my inheritance.
- Nice try your lordship.
The only trouble is you can't prove that.
- We have to stop them.
- Yeah, but how?
I mean Martin's dad already
has a buyer lined up.
- Must be someone rich, this place has
to be worth a fortune.
- And you'll never guess who it is,
(screams)
(upbeat music)
- It's Tiffany Brooks.
- Miss Brooks.
- [Martin] I've got a signed
copy of every CD she ever made.
- I can't believe she's actually here.
- Thanks to my dad.
- Needs a heck of a paint job.
- Oh it's just cosmetic.
Appearances aren't everything.
This is Miss Murphy, the
headmistress here at O'Keefe's.
- It comes with a headmistresss and all.
How cool is that?
- I can't believe this.
- I told you it was bad.
They'll be workmen coming
down to install a new one.
- So we've even less chance
to use the portal now?
- Yep.
- It's completely wrecked.
(soft music)
Brett,
take look at this,
- What is it?
- That's the same symbol as on the portal.
- Eamond Angus O'Keefe's grave,
do you think it belongs to him?
- I'd say definitely.
- Hmm?
- I wonder if this explains
how the portal works?
- I'd say we're fair chance.
- Oh hey, Hannah, Brett.
- What are you doing here?
- Well I was thinking
more about this boiler.
- I thought you said it wasn't your field?
- Well I just read an interesting thesis
on thermal conduction issues
and I know what I'm doing.
(shouts)
(splashes)
- Cormac!
(coughs)
(laughs)
- Okay, maybe I don't know what I'm doing,
but I learn from it.
- [Brett] You all right?
- The book!
Oh no!
- Oops.
- Cormac, I'll murder you.
- What is that?
- An old sketchbook.
Ruined now thanks to you.
- Oh no no it's okay.
I did a course on book
restoration at summer school.
(laughs)
Give it to me.
I'll fix it.
- Look, well, Cormac.
- What if he discovers the
stuff about the portal?
- No, no chance I mean,
it's probably just a diary
about Angus's travels.
- [Miss Murphy] Don't
you think it's important,
to have Miss Brook's
sees the state it's in.
(whooshes)
- I'm sure Miss Brooks doesn't need to see
every last cubby hole of the place.
- I like cubby holes.
What's that?
- That is the boiler of the heating system
that is going to cost
20,000 Euro to repair.
- Hey it's spooky down here,
it's kind of cool.
- Of all the luck.
I was so near Tiffany Brooks yet so far,
- Well I'm sorry but there is more to life
than gopping at Tiffany Brooks.
- But, yeah. the other
- What's this?
- Oh just a mark on the
rock wall, nothing serious.
- Pity, I was kind of hoping
there'd be some secret passages
and stuff down here.
- We can have those put in if you want.
- Put in secret passages?
- I assure you it'd be no
problem whatsoever Miss Brooks.
(dramatic music)
- Wow, what's this?
- This is school property.
I have to get back to my office now.
Thank you.
- Would you like to see
the rest of the grounds,
they're very extensive.
- Log entry zero one, specimen shows signs
of extreme water log.
(soft music)
Log entry zero, there seems to
be hidden pages in the book.
- Maybe we just have to do it after all.
- Do what?
- Go back, and prove that
you're Angus O'Keefe's heir.
- And how are we gonna do that
without explaining about the portal?
- We can't,
we're just gonna have
to come clean about it.
- Nice thought, but it'll never work.
I mean once word gets out
at the portal the government
will take it over for sure.
The school still won't be safe.
- Come on.
They're bound to be finished
in the cellar by now.
- Log entry zero one four,
project successful, sketchbook is restored
to mint condition.
The extra pages show
a number of equations,
also a diagram of a meteor splitting
just before hitting the earth.
This could be a seriously major discovery.
(screams)
- I just love the whole place, perfect.
I'll have my lawyer fax you
an offer this afternoon.
- Wonderful doing business
with you Miss Brooks.
- I can't believe it,
I've actually met Tiffany Brooks.
- She smiled at me.
See you later Tiffany.
- Oh dream on Martin, she wouldn't use you
to walk her poodles.
- See you at the Trustees
meeting, Miss Murphy.
Four o'clock sharp, eh?
(students scream and chatter)
- What's going on?
- Maybe it's just a bit stuck.
Come on, come on.
- What's wrong with it?
- There's nothing wrong with it?
- Then what's wrong with it?
- I don't know.
- Well, this is a disaster.
How we supposed to stop
the school from being sold
if we're stuck here.
(soft music)
- Log entry zero one five,
carved object possibly meteoric,
bears Swan designs similar to old book
and similar to something
I've seen in the cellar.
- [Brett] Maybe some dirt's accumulated
and that's blocking it somehow.
- It's never done that before.
- That's not for everything I guess.
- The stone is too hard.
It wouldn't leave dust particles.
- Maybe, it's the slots that's clogged?
- Or maybe, someone's removed
the key on the other side.
- Who would do that?
- I don't know but at
least it's an explanation.
- I never noticed this before,
there's something in here.
- What?
- I can't reach it.
- Let me.
- Log entry zero one six,
first coordinates are Galway
second are Perth, Australia.
- Geez, you need x-ray
vision to read this stuff.
- Here,
it's a will.
- Who's?
- Angus O'Keefe's.
- The one that's been
missing all these years.
- In the case there are
no descendants or heirs,
the estate should be left
to the county of Galway.
- What about me, I'm a
descendant and an heir.
- On the condition that it never be sold.
- This could save the place.
- If we could get this
back, the Board of Trustees
are meeting at four o'clock to decide
whether or not to sell.
- We have to get there.
- How?
- What are you two doing?
- I was just teaching
Brett some Irish history.
- Well it's getting pretty late, Hannah.
Shouldn't you be off home?
- Um, she can't go home.
- Why not?
- She's locked out.
- Where's your dad?
- He had to work.
- Oh you poor thing.
Well, don't worry I'm sure
there's something we can do.
- What?
- Oh she can sleep over of course.
- Oh no, no.
I don't want to put you to any trouble.
- Oh nonsense, Meredith'll love it.
- A sleepover, how exciting.
(laughs)
- There you see.
Now, come on, let's get a bed made up.
(tense music)
(exhales)
- Whoa!
- This is the first sleep over I've had
since we moved in here.
- All right, I'll let you settle in then.
See in the morning.
- You should tell.
- We have to do something.
- I know, but what?
- [Meredith] Come on Hannah,
come and try the bed.
- Ladies and gentlemen, we
have an offer on the property
from Miss Tiffany Brooks.
- 5.6 million Euro.
- An offer I'm sure your would agree
is exceptionally generous,
and might I say one that
is too good to refuse.
- You want to know what I think?
- Hmm.
- I hope you and Brett get married.
That way you could be
my big sister forever.
Wouldn't that be nice?
- Probably best not to rush
these things, Meredith.
- The offer's on the table.
Let's put it to the vote.
- First, I'd like to say a word.
- If you think you must?
- I do.
- Then of course, Miss Murphy.
- O'Keefe's college has
a long and proud history
to look back on.
(whooshes)
(beeps)
(sizzles)
(clatters)
(whooshes)
- I think we would be great sisters,
we've got so much in
common, don't you reckon?
- Hannah,
- Did you know she wants to marry you?
- What?
- Ah don't worry,
it's news to me to?
- It's working.
- What's working?
- The por,
the key, the key.
- Are you sure?
- Totally.
You can go home now?
- But what about our sleepover?
- I promise you Meredith, I'll come back
we'll have the best sleepover of all time.
- Truly?
- Truly.
But I've got to get back.
Good night.
- And that is why O'Keefe's
college must continue
to offer a rich educational experience.
(audience applauds)
- I couldn't agree more with Miss Murphy's
touching testimony,
but the fact is the school is broke,
we must therefore act
responsibly and do our duty.
Now all those in favor or
accepting Miss Brooke's offer?
(dramatic music)
- [Hannah] How did you do it?
- No idea.
But it's open.
- Aye.
- Mrs. Tuppet?
- Are you sure we have no other choice?
- The facts are clear,
we have no other choice.
- [Brett] Stop!
- We can't sell the school.
- You can't come barging
in here like this, go on.
- I appreciate your support Hannah,
but, it's just too late I'm afraid.
- But you don't understand,
the County Cantor isn't
allowed to sell O'Keefe's.
- Yeah and get this,
they've been collection rent
on the farmlands for 100 years,
they owe that money to the school.
- What are you talking about?
- Its all in here.
Angus O'Keefe's missing will.
- Nonsense, there is no will, give me.
- This looks pretty authentic to me.
And until we get this verified,
I propose that we postpone any decision
on selling the school.
All those in favor,
carried.
All right by you Mr Staunton?
(sighs)
(bird chirps)
(soft music)
(laughs)
- Where did you find that will Hannah?
- Oh, uh, well,
I was just poking around the cellar.
It was hidden behind the wall.
- Yeah, I guess we're
lucky the boiler blew up
when it did.
Or else we'd never have found it.
- I knew it was an omen,
that's grand when thinks
work out the right way, eh Miss Murhpy?
- It is Seamus.
Although somehow I feel
there's more to this
than meets the eye.
- Perhaps we'd better not probe too deep.
(laughs)
We wouldn't want to upset
the good luck, now would we?
- No Seamus, indeed we wouldn't.
- Thank you, Hannah.
You too, Brett.
(dings)
- They suspect something don't they?
- Yeah, but it's okay.
I mean as long as the school is safe,
they'll never ask again.
And you can bet on that.
(upbeat music)
- Morning all.
Just going for a quick surf.
- What about your breakfast?
- This'll do for now.
- When you and Hannah
get married you'll have
to have breakfast together, you know.
- Meredith will you drop
that idea, all right,
we are not getting married.
- Yeah, (crunches)
Hannah may be dumb sometimes,
but she's not dumb enough to marry Brett.
- How would you know?
- Come on you two, leave Brett alone,
although I hope you're
not getting yourself
into something mate, you're a bit young
to be thinking about marriage.
- Not thinking about it.
Trust me.
- There's a post card over there for you.
- For me?
- [Hannah] It's from Cormac,
- Where is he?
What's he been doing, why's
he writing to me in Irish?
- Well, he knew that I'd
have to translate it for you.
- Oh so it's for both of us?
- Yeah, can't tell you
all the places I've seen,
since I discovered your little se,
- What?
- Since I discovered your
little secret in the cellar.
- He can't have done, he never
came through to Australia.
(gasps)
- He never tried to turn the other key.
Did you?
- Cormac.
(laughs)
(soft music)
(upbeat music)
(bright music)
