Haunted (2018) s02e01 Episode Script
The Mimic
1 [intense music playing.]
[woman.]
My name is Rebecca.
Back in college, my roommates and I were tormented by a thing called the Mimic.
[suspenseful music.]
[music intensifies to silence.]
- [eerie instrumentals.]
- [rattling breath.]
[eerie instrumentals.]
[Rebecca.]
Thank you guys all for coming and being a part of this with me.
[droning instrumentals.]
So, we're all here to talk about the house on Clifton, in Cleveland, that some of us lived in or spent a lot of time in.
And just to maybe go through it and process it a little bit together.
When I was about 13 years old, I started getting sick.
I started to notice that I was feeling faint a lot of the time no matter how much I ate or drank.
The first diagnosis that I had was POTS, which is postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.
When I stand up, my heart rate goes really high and my blood pressure goes really low and that causes fainting.
So, they got me a heart monitor that went around my wrist, so if my blood pressure went below a certain number and my pulse went above a certain number, this device would go off to prevent a fainting episode.
Just kind of embarrassing when you're 17 or 18 years old [chuckles.]
to have a medical device that's making noises in class.
So, after high school, I'm living at home with my grandmother and my mother, and I decided to go to community college 'cause my mom worked there.
I started to realize that I wasn't really making a whole lot of friends.
- [loud rock music playing.]
- [indistinct chatter.]
'Cause I was shy, I wasn't so sure about talking to people.
- [stammers.]
I noticed you guys.
- [glassware clinking.]
[rock music continuing.]
You guys seemed so cool, like such a tight-knit group.
So, sort of like a puppy dog, I just made my way over, like, "Please adopt me - into your fun friend group.
" [chuckles.]
- [laughing.]
- [light piano music playing.]
- And you guys did.
And I see this guy walk in.
- Jared.
- [glassware clinking.]
He seemed confident but not arrogant.
And he said, "You wanna hang out?" My heart's going a million miles a minute, I'm like, "Yes.
Let's do that.
" [laughs.]
- [glasses clink.]
- [indistinct chatter.]
So, Jared and I started spending more time together.
- [Young Jared laughs.]
- It was just such an exciting time for me.
I made new friends.
I had this super-cool boyfriend.
- I'm feeling on top of the world.
- [kissing.]
And then I remember that you guys started talking about renting a house and I remember feeling, like, "Yes, that's exactly what I want too.
" - [insects trilling.]
- [crow caws.]
The house was a historic house in Cleveland from the early 1900s.
It felt like it hadn't been lived in in a really long time.
- [engine rumbling.]
- [gravel crunching.]
[insect trilling continuing.]
- [door closes.]
- [young Rebecca scoffs.]
- [young Rebecca.]
It's huge.
- It is.
Oh my God.
- [sighs.]
Let's get the stuff.
- Yeah.
[sinister music playing.]
[door creaks.]
[ethereal music playing.]
[young Rebecca exhales.]
- [young Rebecca scoffs, inhales.]
- [young Z laughs.]
Oh, wow.
- [box thuds.]
- [young Rebecca laughs.]
[young Rebecca sighs.]
- [footsteps ascending.]
- [sinister music playing.]
[light footsteps.]
- [loud piano note.]
- [young Rebecca gasps.]
[young Z laughing.]
- [soothing piano playing.]
- [young Rebecca sighs, chuckles.]
[Rebecca.]
We decided that we wanted to paint the whole house to make it our own.
So, we're going out, we're getting paint, we're painting really late at night.
And I remember being there and I was alone.
I was setting my room up.
[paint roller squishing.]
[ominous instrumentals.]
[squishing.]
[monitor beeping.]
[lightly groans.]
[exhales.]
[beeping slows.]
[Mimic Z.]
Hey, Becca, are you home? What's up, Z? [Mimic Z.]
Hey, Becca.
Yeah, I'm up here.
[Mimic Z, now stern.]
Becca, come down here.
[young Rebecca.]
Z? [suspenseful music playing.]
- [staircase creaks.]
- [footsteps descending.]
Z, where are you? [landing creaks.]
[crickets chirping.]
[eerie music playing.]
[distant rattling.]
[young Rebecca panting.]
[lock clicks.]
[cricket chirping intensifies.]
[Mimic Z, echoing.]
Come meet me.
[door thuds, rattles.]
[ethereal music playing.]
[shallow breath.]
[door clicks, slowly creaks open.]
[young Rebecca panting.]
[shaky breathing.]
[sharp exhale.]
- [loud bang.]
- [young Rebecca gasps, screams.]
- [monitor beeping.]
- [young Rebecca panting.]
- [young Z.]
Becca.
Are you okay? - [beeping slows.]
[shaky breathing.]
I just gotta gotta catch my breath.
- [young Rebecca exhales.]
- Breathe.
Breathe.
- [slow beeping.]
- [focused breathing.]
And I'm like, "Were you just here a few minutes ago?" And she said no, that she wasn't home.
Nobody was home.
It was just me.
[Z.]
I was like, "That's very strange.
" I think I was done with school then but I was still working, like, 70 hours a week.
- [Rebecca.]
Yeah.
- So I wasn't there.
She's like, "You're tired.
" Like, "Paint fumes.
" There was a chill down my spine.
I'm not sure what's going on.
It was just this "not quite right" feeling.
So, after that, we get done painting, we start moving stuff in.
And I was hearing all of you who lived there calling out to me on a daily basis.
This was just constantly happening for me.
It always sounded like it was coming from the basement.
- [eerie music playing.]
- [door rattling.]
[Mimic Z.]
Becca.
[eerie vocalizations.]
[Mimic Z.]
Becca.
[Mimic Jared.]
Becca, I'm down here.
- [high-pitched whirring.]
- [Mimic Z.]
Hey, Becca.
- [clang.]
- [monitor beeping.]
[slurping water.]
[beeping slows.]
[Mimic Z.]
Hey Becca, it's Z.
[eerie instrumentals [Mimic Z.]
Becca, come meet me.
- [Mimic Jared.]
Becca, come meet me.
- [banging.]
- [young Rebecca exhales.]
- [frantic instrumentals.]
[Mimic Jared.]
Becca, come with me.
- [young Rebecca cries out.]
- [frantic instrumentals continuing.]
- [Mimic Jared.]
Becca, I'm down here.
- [young Rebecca groans.]
[monitor beeping quickly, then slows.]
[shaky breathing.]
[mellow instrumentals.]
I just remember feeling absolutely insane.
We had this huge grate in the stairs that went down to the basement.
And there was something about this basement that just felt so wrong.
I didn't know any of this was happening.
I didn't want to talk about it.
I didn't want to I was kind of new to our group of friends and I didn't want to be open about it.
I just wanted to bottle it up and keep it to myself.
And then, one night, Jared decided to spend the night at the house.
[heavy breathing, sighing.]
[heavy breathing, sighing continues.]
[breathing slows.]
[ominous music playing.]
[Jared.]
What's wrong? [droning instrumentals.]
[Young Rebecca exhales.]
[panting.]
- [chorus of crickets.]
- [eerie music playing.]
[Mimic Z.]
Jared, it's Z.
[ethereal instrumentals.]
[Mimic Z.]
Hey, Jared, are you home? [light clicks on.]
[Mimic Z.]
Come down here.
[bed creaks.]
[Mimic Z.]
Hey Jared, are you home? [suspenseful music playing.]
Yeah, we're here.
Who's there? - Z? - [staircase creaks.]
[footsteps descending.]
[crickets chirping.]
[ominous music playing.]
[continued creaking.]
[knocking.]
[door creaks open.]
[Mimic Z.]
Jared, come meet me.
Where are you? [Mimic Z, now stern.]
Jared, come down here.
[wind whirring.]
Is that you? - [piercing crescendo.]
- [slam.]
[frantic knocking.]
[whispering vocalizations.]
[frantic knocking.]
[door rattling violently.]
- [frantic instrumentals.]
- [continued knocking.]
[knocking, rattling.]
- [slam.]
- [thud.]
Shit.
[footsteps ascending stairs.]
So that was the moment when I was, like, "Okay, something is going on here.
" I remember you waking me up, telling me what happened.
It was [sighs.]
just like this confirmation for me, because Jared, of all people, wouldn't be the person who would believe it.
It's not within you to believe in anything like that.
I had a moment of "Oh thank God! I'm not going crazy," and then a moment of "Oh shit, something is happening.
" I was absolutely terrified of that basement.
I wouldn't go anywhere near it.
And Then I remember that we were about to get another roommate.
Brandon decides that he wants to move in with us.
We tell him we don't have any rooms left.
He was like, "What about your basement?" And I remember just this feeling of, like, my heart dropping.
He decides that it's good enough for him.
[door rattles, creaks open.]
And I'm thinking to myself, even if I do say something, maybe he's gonna think I don't want him to come stay here.
I was still fairly new to this friend group.
I didn't want to be the person that was like, "The basement's haunted.
" What am I supposed to say? So I didn't say anything.
- [box thuds.]
- [crickets chirping.]
[door creaks.]
[Brenden exhales.]
[ominous music playing.]
- [suspenseful droning.]
- [Rebecca.]
And now I feel bad, like, I should have said something to you, but I don't know what I would have said, because, at this point in time in my life, I'm trying to feel like an adult, and I didn't want to seem like a little kid or that I believed in the paranormal.
And so I'm down in the basement.
I turn the music on.
[pattering of drum sticks.]
[garage rock music playing.]
[Mimic Rebecca.]
Branden.
Yeah? [Mimic Rebecca.]
Can I come in? [staircase creaking.]
[footsteps descending.]
[garage rock music continuing.]
[Mimic Rebecca.]
I thought you might be - a little bit lonely down here.
- All my wicked ways Do you like my dress? [Mimic Rebecca laughs.]
Why don't you come dance with me? All my wicked ways [garage rock music intensifies.]
All my wicked ways - [kissing.]
- [heavy breathing.]
- All my wicked ways - [crackling.]
- [heavy breathing.]
- [ominous music playing.]
[spits, gasps.]
- [young Brenden gasps, cries out.]
- [music crescendos.]
- [young Brenden whimpering.]
- [crackling continues.]
[ominous music intensifying.]
[young Brenden cries out, pants.]
[young Brenden gasps, screams.]
[frantic panting.]
The feelings, the sensations.
It was tangible.
[sinister music playing.]
I know I'd just seen something ridiculous, something insane, something utterly terrifying.
I refused to go back inside the house, like figure out just [stammering.]
What did I just see? What has happened? What's going on? Am I okay? Is she okay? More questions than I had answers for.
[Rebecca.]
I remember seeing you, and you were shaking and you were pale.
I've never seen you like that.
So you told me what happened, and I just felt really violated and I felt really disgusted, and I felt like whatever it is I've been hearing you just saw it.
Like, "Holy shit! It can look like us!" Whatever it is that's been talking to me for months knows what we look like, knows how we dress, knows what we would say.
[Jared.]
Then there were a bunch of whole, like, new questions.
Like, is this an actual being? It looks like a person that you can touch, that is tangible.
And around that time is when we named whatever it was the Mimic.
[sinister music continuing.]
So, after what Brandon saw in the basement I'm laying in bed one night.
And I looked up at the ceiling.
- [piano notes ripple.]
- There was just something about this water spot that was drawing me in.
- [eerie music playing.]
- [piano notes rippling.]
What the fuck? - [piercing crescendo.]
- [Young Rebecca screams.]
[fast panting.]
Jared.
Jared! Jared, wait! Where are you going? [sighs.]
Fuck.
[creaking.]
[eerie music playing.]
[Rebecca.]
Jared gets this blacklight.
- And we go upstairs to the attic.
- [continued creaking.]
[floorboards creaking.]
- [crash.]
- [rattling.]
[ominous music playing.]
[cautious footsteps.]
You just see splatter all over the wall.
In my mind, I'm thinking, "Am I looking at blood?" - [piercing instrumentals.]
- [Young Rebecca gasps.]
And on the floor is just this amorphous puddle.
- I felt sick to my stomach.
- [young Rebecca cries out.]
This water spot I've been looking at is from somebody who died [booming instrumentals.]
and basically laid in their own blood for a while, - enough that it pooled down to my ceiling.
- [dripping.]
[eerie music playing.]
In my mind, I'm thinking [stammers.]
"What happened? What happened here?" So, in the morning, I talked to the landlord.
She was talking about the man who lived there before us, a young guy, he lived there alone, and that he stopped coming around suddenly.
We're like, "Well, what happened to him?" [suspenseful instrumentals.]
She said that this young man had shot himself in the head.
It was days before they found him in the attic.
I'm sitting there, thinking to myself, "Had the Mimic been messing with this guy?" - [piercing instrumentals.]
- [screaming.]
Whatever has been tormenting all of us must have been tormenting him as well.
- [panting.]
- [gun shot.]
[Rebecca.]
How horrifying to go through that alone, to not have anyone to confirm that you're not losing your mind.
I could see how that could drive someone to do what he did.
- [gunshot.]
- [thud.]
And then, the next night, something happened that changed everything.
- [water running.]
- [mirror squeaks.]
[loud droplets.]
[water running continues.]
[loud droplets.]
[door squeaks.]
- [crescendo.]
- [breath rattling.]
[eerie hissing.]
[Young Rebecca screams, cries out.]
- [frantic instrumentals.]
- [growling.]
[young Rebecca screaming.]
[skin crackling.]
[screams.]
[rattling breath, growling.]
- [continued screaming.]
- [suspenseful music playing.]
[Mimic Z.]
Becca.
[Mimic Jared.]
Becca.
[screams.]
[frantic instrumentals.]
- [suspenseful music intensifying.]
- [continued screaming.]
[rattling breath.]
[continued screaming.]
[thudding, slithering.]
[growling.]
[young Rebecca cries out.]
[panicked breathing.]
[Young Z sharply inhaling, exhaling.]
- [door rattles.]
- [young Rebecca screams.]
[thud.]
[crying.]
[thud.]
[panting.]
[gasping.]
- [bang.]
- [young Rebecca screams.]
- [sobbing.]
- Becca, it's all right.
It's all right.
It's me.
- [inhales, cries.]
- It's all right.
It's all right.
- Come here.
- [crying.]
[panting, crying.]
It's all right.
I just remember feeling absolutely horrified.
I felt frozen.
- [ominous music playing.]
- [exhales.]
- [crickets chirping.]
- [door creaks open.]
[Rebecca.]
I told everyone, "I'm not going back inside.
" - [Young Rebecca crying, panting.]
- "I'm never going back inside.
" [car doors closing.]
- [engine rumbling.]
- We all moved out of the house after that.
[engine revving.]
It took me a long time to feel secure that it hadn't followed me.
[stammers.]
I finally started feeling like I was free in a way, and that whatever it was was stuck at that house.
- [soft ominous piano music playing.]
- Jared and I got married.
We have kids.
I've lived a very normal life since then.
But at the same time, whatever it is that's in the basement is probably still there.
[eerie instrumentals.]
Renters have been in and out of there.
[piercing instrumentals.]
Is the Mimic tormenting them too? [piercing crescendo, screams.]
[growling, rattling breath.]
[eerie electronic music playing.]
[woman.]
My name is Rebecca.

Like, "Holy shit! It can look like us!" Whatever it is that's been talking to me for months knows what we look like, knows how we dress, knows what we would say.
[Jared.]
Then there were a bunch of whole, like, new questions.
Like, is this an actual being? It looks like a person that you can touch, that is tangible.
And around that time is when we named whatever it was the Mimic.
[sinister music continuing.]
So, after what Brandon saw in the basement I'm laying in bed one night.
And I looked up at the ceiling.
- [piano notes ripple.]
- There was just something about this water spot that was drawing me in.
- [eerie music playing.]
- [piano notes rippling.]
What the fuck? - [piercing crescendo.]
- [Young Rebecca screams.]
[fast panting.]
Jared.
Jared! Jared, wait! Where are you going? [sighs.]
Fuck.
[creaking.]
[eerie music playing.]
[Rebecca.]
Jared gets this blacklight.
- And we go upstairs to the attic.
- [continued creaking.]
[floorboards creaking.]
- [crash.]
- [rattling.]
[ominous music playing.]
[cautious footsteps.]
You just see splatter all over the wall.
In my mind, I'm thinking, "Am I looking at blood?" - [piercing instrumentals.]
- [Young Rebecca gasps.]
And on the floor is just this amorphous puddle.
- I felt sick to my stomach.
- [young Rebecca cries out.]
This water spot I've been looking at is from somebody who died [booming instrumentals.]
and basically laid in their own blood for a while, - enough that it pooled down to my ceiling.
- [dripping.]
[eerie music playing.]
In my mind, I'm thinking [stammers.]
"What happened? What happened here?" So, in the morning, I talked to the landlord.
She was talking about the man who lived there before us, a young guy, he lived there alone, and that he stopped coming around suddenly.
We're like, "Well, what happened to him?" [suspenseful instrumentals.]
She said that this young man had shot himself in the head.
It was days before they found him in the attic.
I'm sitting there, thinking to myself, "Had the Mimic been messing with this guy?" - [piercing instrumentals.]
- [screaming.]
Whatever has been tormenting all of us must have been tormenting him as well.
- [panting.]
- [gun shot.]
[Rebecca.]
How horrifying to go through that alone, to not have anyone to confirm that you're not losing your mind.
I could see how that could drive someone to do what he did.
- [gunshot.]
- [thud.]
And then, the next night, something happened that changed everything.
- [water running.]
- [mirror squeaks.]
[loud droplets.]
[water running continues.]
[loud droplets.]
[door squeaks.]
- [crescendo.]
- [breath rattling.]
[eerie hissing.]
[Young Rebecca screams, cries out.]
- [frantic instrumentals.]
- [growling.]
[young Rebecca screaming.]
[skin crackling.]
[screams.]
[rattling breath, growling.]
- [continued screaming.]
- [suspenseful music playing.]
[Mimic Z.]
Becca.
[Mimic Jared.]
Becca.
[screams.]
[frantic instrumentals.]
- [suspenseful music intensifying.]
- [continued screaming.]
[rattling breath.]
[continued screaming.]
[thudding, slithering.]
[growling.]
[young Rebecca cries out.]
[panicked breathing.]
[Young Z sharply inhaling, exhaling.]
- [door rattles.]
- [young Rebecca screams.]
[thud.]
[crying.]
[thud.]
[panting.]
[gasping.]
- [bang.]
- [young Rebecca screams.]
- [sobbing.]
- Becca, it's all right.
It's all right.
It's me.
- [inhales, cries.]
- It's all right.
It's all right.
- Come here.
- [crying.]
[panting, crying.]
It's all right.
I just remember feeling absolutely horrified.
I felt frozen.
- [ominous music playing.]
- [exhales.]
- [crickets chirping.]
- [door creaks open.]
[Rebecca.]
I told everyone, "I'm not going back inside.
" - [Young Rebecca crying, panting.]
- "I'm never going back inside.
" [car doors closing.]
- [engine rumbling.]
- We all moved out of the house after that.
[engine revving.]
It took me a long time to feel secure that it hadn't followed me.
[stammers.]
I finally started feeling like I was free in a way, and that whatever it was was stuck at that house.
- [soft ominous piano music playing.]
- Jared and I got married.
We have kids.
I've lived a very normal life since then.
But at the same time, whatever it is that's in the basement is probably still there.
[eerie instrumentals.]
Renters have been in and out of there.
[piercing instrumentals.]
Is the Mimic tormenting them too? [piercing crescendo, screams.]
[growling, rattling breath.]
[eerie electronic music playing.]
