Mission to Burnley (2023) s02e01 Episode Script

Return To The Promised Land

1
This programme contains very strong
language from the outset and
throughout.
(ALARM BELL RINGING)
Boys, I hope
that the moment you set foot
on this pitch today,
I hope that you will be able,
from the first minute
to the last minute,
to show what
you're really feeling inside.
Cos I know, and I've seen
time and time again
for the rest for everybody
in this team,
everybody in this dressing room,
how much you're willing to do
to make this story successful.
Now, when we start this game
and we say, "Guys, believe, believe,
believe, believe," we don't say
fucking believe
because it's just good to say.
It's cos
it's a fucking fact of life.
I have told you before, all of us
in this dressing room,
we've needed something
fucking special along the way
to arrive here where we are today,
in the best league in the world.
We've all had fucking special
moments before we got here.
Today we just need another one.
We need another one together,
in this place here today,
and we go and fucking celebrate
with our fans.
That's the picture
at the end of the fucking game.
So I'm asking you only one thing,
guys.
Show from the first minute
to the last minute
who we fucking are.
Two arms, two legs, just like
these other fuckers
on the other side.
No fucking respect for them, boys.
Fucking aggressive and we stay us,
boys, OK? Fucking go. Let's go!
Come on!
(PLAYERS) Come on!
Two fucking games that we win.
Come on.
(COMMENTATOR) The permutations
are simple.
Burnley must win to keep
their slim survival hopes alive.
# JOHNNY CASH:
'God's Gonna Cut You Down'
# I've been down on bended knee
Talking to the man from Galilee
# He spoke to me in a voice so sweet
# I thought I heard the shuffle
of an angel's feet
# He called my name
and my heart stood still
# When he said,
"John, go do my will!"
# Go tell 'em
that God's gonna cut you down
# Tell 'em
that God's gonna cut you down #
(COMMENTATOR) Burnley have done it.
The Championship title is theirs.
(KOMPANY) 'It doesn't really matter
how much I've achieved in the past,
has nothing to do with it.
If you ask me where are my medals,
where are the trophies,
I couldn't tell you.
I don't see it as a trophy. I see it
as a cycle of improvement.'
(COMMENTATOR) They have been
simply irresistible,
one of the best sides this division
has seen.
'You can draw almost more joy
out of seeing a team get better
every day, rather than
the actual achievement,
and I want to see how far
we can get
with this group of people
at that level.'
(PUNDIT) The Premier League
is getting further and further away
from the Championship.
If you try and play that style
in the Premier League
you will get cut to bits.
(PUNDIT) I think Vincent Kompany's
spent a lot of money.
The pressure will be on him.
'We are getting into a league
where in order to be at that level
we'll have to over-achieve.
We'll have to do more
than what on paper
we should be able to achieve,
And we get a chance
to prove ourselves
against the best players
in the world, the best teams,
the best managers, and that, for me,
is something we want to embrace.
The odds are not in our favour,
but it doesn't matter.
We'll give it everything.'
(PUNDIT) Hello, and welcome along
to the start of the new season,
and of course
(GARY LINEKER) ..Burnley
to fight relegation, but stay up.
(FAN) Vincent got everyone
believing.
Not only the players,
the whole town is believing in him.
(DANNY MURPHY) I think
they're the most equipped
of the three to stay up.
I don't see them and think,
"Wow, you know, they've got
no chance."(PUNDIT) We're all
buzzing about this new season,
but unfortunately
it's Manchester City,
the champions of Europe,
champions of England, and
(PUNDIT) Burnley hosting City
on the opening night of the season.
The Clarets bounced straight back
to the top flight
after relegation.
Please, Alan. You're a legend, man.
Really great to meet you.
Got a long way to go to be a legend.
Don't worry. Thank you.
The vision of the club
hasn't changed.
We have felt from day one
that, you know,
this club belongs
in the Premier League.
Thank you.
Are you from Sesame Street?
I am from Sesame Street.
Eh, it's OK.
Even my own children
think I sound like Kermit the Frog,
so I keep getting told
to be patient, that we're not
going to see nearly as many goals
and as many wins as we saw
last year.
Contrary to what I think a lot
of people are expecting,
I'd like to be in the middle
of the table this year, and I think
that that would be a good ambition
for us, and a hard one, to be fair.
What's up, guys? Nice to see you.
And you.
Yeah, enjoy.
Let us know, let us know
if everything
Well, the truth of last season
is we got to where we are
a lot sooner
than we thought we would, right?
And so if we had had two to three
years in the Championship,
that gives you a lot more
development time,
a lot more cohesion time.
I don't regret that we're up
right now, where we are,
it just makes the pressure
a little bit steeper.
Hi, guys. How are you?
Can I say hello?
You have you have no idea
how much of a fan I am of Barcelona.
I went to school there.
OK. Oh yeah?Yes.
Yeah, so but we think
you're the best. We love you.
OK. We will try, OK?
Enjoy, but not too much, OK?
(LAUGHS)
(PLAYER) Keep the intensity high,
yeah?
Keep that intensity right up.
First tackle, first pass,
make it good. Come on.
Fucking enjoy it, fellas, yeah?
(COMMENTATOR) Vincent Kompany's
charges facing the best
that there is,
the best that there has been
for some time.
(CROWD) Come on, Burnley!
Come on, Burnley!
The first minute now of the season
we've all been waiting for,
but this season didn't start now,
not for us,
not for anyone in this place.
This season didn't start now.
It started from
when each and every one of you
was even fucking kids, home,
whatever you were doing
to get to this level.
It started a fucking long time ago,
(BELL RINGS)
and in a different place
than this than this place.
But today, all of us get a chance
to make it worth something,
to show why we wanted
to be in this place.
And the only thing I'm gonna ask you
now, at the start of the season,
look to your left,
look to your right.
Yeah?
The person on your left
and the person on the right
is not defined
by just the good times.
You find out about people
in good times and bad times.
Can we be a team in good times
and bad times?
Be a fucking team
until the end of the season?
Fucking enjoy, lads. Alright?
Let's go.
(COMMENTATOR) The Premier League
show back on the road,
with the champions
of the top two divisions
from last season going head-to-head.
Go, here we go.
De Bruyne, linking up again,
and it's headed back
across to Haaland!
He's already made his mark!
(CO-COMMENTATOR) And that is
the difference at this level,
the sharpness, how clinical
the top strikers are.
Now Foster, trying to work it out
to Vitinho.
Koleosho with the attempt.
It's almost as though conceding
the goal has had the opposite effect
of what you might have expected
from Burnley.
It's encouraged and emboldened them.
Here's Foster making progress
for Burnley.
Right across the face
of Ederson's goal.
They've been fantastic, Burnley,
they really have
in the opening 29 minutes.
Wouldn't have thought
they were one-nil down.
Yeah, another lesson
for these players.
That is the difference between
Championship and Premier League.
That was a good goal.
Curled round by Foden,
and it drops for Rodri!
Kyle Walker goes down.
The red card is produced.
The rudest of rude awakenings
for newly promoted Burnley.
OK, boys.
I said that this is step one for us.
We can look back through the game
and say, do you know what?
We just let them play
and we just sit back
and whatever happens, happens.
We didn't fucking do that.
Whenever we play, guys,
we fucking create the chances.
We hurt them.
But you have to now stay focussed
on that progression.
It was good, but like every
fucking game I will tell you,
not good enough.
We can do more. We can do better.
Can't celebrate defeat, of course,
but I'm still gonna say well done.
I'm proud of you, and we go again,
alright?
(PUNDIT) I went to Burnley
last night.
I went to the game last night,
but they were so naive.
(PUNDIT) It is hard
to keep the ball out of the net
when you're playing against City,
but I think Vince Kompany will learn
by that.
From Burnley's point of view,
they will improve, but it's gonna be
a long season for them.
It was nice last year that we went
with a non-betting brand.
It would have been nice
to be a trailblazer
and stuck with the non-betting,
even though we're taking a hit
commercially.
That's what I find disappointing.
You know, gambling
is a really serious problem.
You know, you don't have beer
anymore, you don't have cigarettes.
You know, people kill themselves
because of their addiction
to gambling.
Almost feels a little bit
disingenuous in that we've been told
we're gonna write our own story,
we're the underdogs and we're gonna
do things differently,
except when it comes to
our shirt sponsoring.
Then we'll just take
the highest bidder.
Let me jump in for two secs.
I'll try not to take
too much offence
to that comment,
because it does actually hurt
that someone that is
completely opposed to gambling
has had to accept
that we had no other choice.
You're asking me to write a cheque
for four or five million,
just because we don't want something
on the front of the shirt.
It's the only way for me
to get four or five million.
Or, if you like, I can go and sell,
you know, Anass.
What's the choice?
It was never intended
as a criticism.
It's just it would have been nice
to move forward from that.
But we completely understand
the financial side of it,
and we'd like to keep Anass.
We are keeping Anass.
But even the trade-off,
just to be clear,
these are the trade-offs that are
the hardest part every single day.
Do you accept this,
or have to go do something else
that you don't wanna do?
Now, the person you really want
to talk to.
So, I wanted to kick off
on transfers.
The biggest challenge is not
necessarily the players' terms
and demands.
We can manage that. It's the agents.
It's a player that we are
in advanced talks with
and we've conceded on pretty much
everything,
other than his agent wants
a £2 million agent fee.
(WOMAN GASPS)
Is that general practice?
No.
Well, not in our world.
We've had people come and ask
for relegation release clauses,
we've had 'if Vinny leaves' clauses.
We've had a couple of requests
for those this summer.
Vinny does get impatient, I think,
at times, to get players in,
but it's a slow process.
(PUNDIT) What's going on
with Burnley and Vincent Kompany?
Are they gonna bring anyone in?
(PUNDIT) Looks like it's gonna be
a new-look Burnley team.
What's the latest from Turf Moor?
(PUNDIT) Kompany rejuvenated
that squad after relegation
from the Premier League last summer.
They signed so many players
(PUNDIT) ..a four-year deal
at Turf Moor and becomes
Vincent Kompany's
eighth new summer signing.
It's all happening.
We've got a great recruitment team
that's headed up by George and Lee.
They identify the players,
along with Vince.
We can't just go to Juventus
and buy a 19-year-old, 20-year-old
that's Premier League-ready,
cos he's gonna cost 20, 30 million.
So you have to be smart.
We have to be a lot more streetwise
and explore
so many different markets.
Our surveillance capability
is pretty extreme.
So we actively track
about 300,000 players worldwide.
We then have a range of kind of
richer analytical models
that we run, which give us really,
really good quality surveillance
over anywhere from sort of 16,000
to 30,000 players, and then
what we do is we interlace
all these different models
to ultimately identify players.
So it's completely global.
Your friend in Italy has gone up
to £4 million for the year.
From 1.5?
From 1.5 euros to £3.9 million.
It's to do with tax. It's to do with
the tax payment on top of the cost.
It basically doubles the price.
Given his history,
it's starting to feel expensive,
that, innit?
Doesn't appeal as much.
Yeah.
It was appealing
because it was cheap.
Now it's not cheap.
Then what's the
what are our alternatives?
We do nothing.
What's more, the cost of that deal
or the cost of us doing nothing?
At a million and a half a year
it was golden.
We'd do that all day long. But four?
I think the window
has gone exceptionally well
to date in terms of the players
that we've got through the door
and the business that we've done.
That's it. Done. Burnley player.
It's time-consuming.
I recently had a family holiday
where if I wasn't on the phone
I was getting stick off my missus
for being on the phone,
and if I wasn't getting stick
off my missus
for being on the phone,
I was getting stick off Vinny
for not being on my phone.
But it's just the nature
of the industry.
It never, ever stops.
There's been quite a lot
of new signings, so yeah,
starting to see how
everyone settles in.
From the looks of everyone so far,
it looks like everyone is
very talented, just hopefully
it all comes together as a team.
Guys, Nathan Redmond
from Birmingham.
I'm gonna sing 'This Is How
We Do It' by Montell Jordan. (SINGS)
The initiation, it's a tradition
we've done since I've come here.
Your heartbeat definitely rises
when you have to do it,
but it's good when you've done that.
You feel part of the group.
(SINGING)
# Cos maybe
# You're gonna be the one
that saves me
# And after all.. # Cheers, lads.
(BOOING)
It can be quite daunting
for some people,
but I don't mind it, like,
so I just sing my old faithful.
# Life is old there
older than the trees
# Younger than the mountains
growing like a breeze
# Country roads, take me home
# To the place where I belong #
(CONTINUES)
Towards the camera. Just to check.
(LAUGHS)
You can take somebody
like Lyle Foster.
We took him from Westerlo
in Belgium, which, you know,
is a very small club
in the middle of nowhere, really.
But if you look at Lyle's profile,
our challenge with Lyle is,
can we coach him
into the tactical side,
which he'll have never
really experienced before?
But in terms of raw material,
he's got everything
to be a top 30%
Premier League player.
I'm in my element here.
It's like being in a sci-fi movie,
innit?
From the outside looking in,
there's been less utilisation
for Foster
than maybe we anticipated.
He was an expensive striker.
He seemed to, like -
No, for me
it was completely planned,
because I keep saying
everyone is getting nervous
about the price tag.
We ran an analysis.
He's gonna be the cheapest striker
in the Premier League.
You see that potential?Yeah, we do,
definitely.
Three, two, one.
We need you all.
Look after each other
and let's fucking go.(BELL)
Let's do this, huh?
(COMMENTATOR) Two-nil to Aston Villa
and it is a terrible start
for Burnley.
Burnley desperate to get back
into this game.
Come on.
(COMMENTATOR) But they are facing
an uphill struggle.
Let's go, boys, let's go.
(COMMENTATOR) Foster.
He's in behind. His touch
let him down,
but encouraging signs from Burnley.
Well done, Lyle.
Come on, Burnley!Come on, Burnley.
(COMMENTATOR) Roberts with a cross.
Foster on the spin.
It is brilliant from Lyle Foster!
Burnley are back in it.
It's a dream moment
for Lyle Foster,
his first ever Premier League goal.
Come on, Burnley! Come on, Burnley!
Come on, Burnley!
We just need one more.
Just put one more in.
(COMMENTATOR) Burnley are looking
to rally. But here's McGinn, and now
Diaby! It's a fantastic finish!
We've got a much better team,
and you still have, what,
four guys that weren't even in there
that could absolutely
make a difference.
We'll see.
We need some points
out of the next three games.
We do. We do.
We'll get some.
Don't feel fucking bad about it.
Keep your fucking heads.
Play the right stuff, like we did
in midweek, and we'll be alright.
Your fucking heads drop
as soon as we concede a goal,
thinking, "Fuck, all that hard work
for fucking nothing." It's not.
Use your fucking voices.
Keep everyone together.
Communication will save you
10% fucking running every game.
Thank you.
Appreciate the help today.
We need we need goals.
We will get there.
Yeah, well
You got it totally right.
Three years experience and
(PHONE DIALLING TONE)
I'm just giving you
a one o'clock update
on where we're at.
City have had an offer
off Chelsea for Cole Palmer.
City are wanting a buy-back.
Chelsea have said no,
so we are sat waiting on that one.
So
'OK, and still nothing
from our friend at Chelsea?
It's like it's dead.'
If Cucurella goes to Man United,
Maatsen stays at Chelsea.
'Oh, fun OK.'
Sorry, you can sign Eric Dier
from Spurs if you want.
'OK. I don't really know who he is,
but -'
He played for England for a while.
He's (BLEEP) million in wages.
'Yeah, that's not gonna happen.'
Right, OK.'OK.
That's very nice. We should probably
talk to Eden Hazard too.
No-one's signed him.'
Yeah. Yeah. I'm not sure
he's got the legs.
'Well, you could ask.'
I'll ask Vince. I'll ask Vince.
'OK. I'll talk to you later.'
Yeah, I'll speak to you later.
(PUNDIT) Another name
that's emerged today
is Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen.
So impressive for Burnley on loan
last season, and we think
Burnley are trying to do
a permanent deal for him.
Obviously with players coming in,
that means
that there will be players
leaving the football club.
I think if we were to get someone
like Ian Maatsen into the club,
I think we'd probably
let Charlie Taylor go.
It's always a difficult time,
probably, for a lot of people.
Like, how are you finding
transfer window?
For me,
it's nothing against Burnley.
It's not me wanting to leave
or anything like that, it's just
I want to play.
I think that's all it comes down to.
Whether that's here or somewhere
else, like, I'm not bothered,
as long as I'm playing.
Last season obviously
was a bit difficult for me.
Didn't play as much as I wanted,
but that's all it is.
I loved my time at Burnley.
I feel I'm still at a good age.
I know people take the mick,
but yeah, I feel as though
I'm still at a good age.
While I feel good I just want
to be playing.
Yeah, same, to be honest.
I wanna play games, and if
it's right to leave,
and when you have it
set in your mind you want to go,
it makes things a little bit easier.
When you don't want to leave
and the club want you out, I suppose
it's different story.Definitely.
I think Charlie Taylor has been
a massive part of my career here.
He's a huge player and, you know,
to see anyone go would be hard,
but especially Chas, you know,
what he's done for Burnley FC.
I'd be very happy to see him stay.
(PUNDIT) Burnley have completed
their 15th signing
of this summer transfer window.
They've agreed a deal with Genk
for the Belgian international
Mike Tresor.
Overall, a pretty good transfer
window for Vincent Kompany,
fifteen players in, in total.
That's a good welcome already,
innit?
A lot of new players as well
into the squad.
The difficult one for yourself is,
are they bringing in somebody
to replace you? And that can be
difficult. You start thinking
about all kinds of thoughts
in your head, and if they are
not happy with what you are doing.
So everybody goes through
these thoughts.
The manager has always been good
with me.
He's always been open and honest,
and we've had a lot of chats.
That's the only thing you owe
to a player, is to tell him
what you're thinking,
really being honest.
"Look, Charlie, we're looking
for another left-back."
Anybody in football,
they just want to be in the team,
but there's eleven spots.
You've just got to get on with it.
Right down to the deadline day
I thought I was off.
I thought I'd be leaving,
and I thought it was probably
my last day here. I was saying
goodbye to the lads and everything.
It's emotional.
Something I've never
really experienced before.
Yeah, I honestly thought
I was going.
(PUNDIT) 'With Ian Maatsen, Burnley
and Chelsea actually agreed a fee,
but Maatsen not quite keen
on the move, ready to prove himself
at Chelsea'
Stuff elsewhere didn't materialise,
or for whatever reason
didn't happen, and that's football,
really.
In the end we couldn't find anyone
that we thought was gonna be
better than him.
Once you've been honest with someone
as well, they have to understand
as well that the situation
can always change, and to be ready
for that.
When your moment comes,
then be ready.
We did a lot more trade
than we expected. Is that fair?
We've kind of had I remember
the last board meeting
about seven, eight sort of
key positions we were gonna fill,
and we came out with fifteen.
I know there's some tension around
the amount of money that's been
committed around this squad.
I think when we were in here last
we talked about the need
to get the squad budget up
to a certain level to give us
a chance of survival. We need to be
smarter, more efficient,
which is what we'll aim to be
in everything.
But it's definitely a tough gig.
I'm a hundred percent sure, I would
put everything on the line to say
that we've got some talent in there
that will be big names
in the future.
That I don't have any doubt.
The only question I have
as a coach, honestly, is hopefully
they're ready in time.
(PUNDIT) Look, it's been
a tough start, fixtures.
You talk about Man City,
Aston Villa, Tottenham.
It is a tough start.
I was expecting a bit more
from Burnley, though,
I'll be honest.
He romped the Championship.
(FAN ON RADIO) You've got to have
a balanced squad.
They've got some quality
young players. They've got
no left-back.
Played the right-back at left-back,
centre-half at right-back.
(PUNDIT) Played three games at home.
Wait till you play away
against these sort of teams,
and you're playing
this open football
(PUNDIT) This is the Clarets'
first away league fixture.
The team news is in.
There's a return for birthday boy
Charlie Taylor at left-back.
He's 30 today.
Probably a bit nervous, really,
for the first time in a long time.
Previously we've been in
the Championship,
so I don't know, you sort of
start to question yourself,
whether you can still do it
at the top level.
Deep down you always believe
that you can do it,
you just need that chance
to prove it, really.
(COMMENTATOR) We are closing in
on kick-off.
All eyes will be on
South African Lyle Foster.
He scored in his last two
appearances in the Premier League.
Guys, four minutes!
Boys, get together!
Come on, let's go!
Come on, in our position.
Let's go.
(COMMENTATOR) Sangare.
Foster, who looks to turn
the new man, and does just that.
Foster has the shot. It's to Turner.
He has looked lively for Burnley.
Forest on the move again. Elanga.
Again, Taylor sliding in.
Koleosho.
That's a good turn of pace.
Look at him go! What a run!
Can he pick out a Burnley shirt?
He can! It's a Burnley goal!
Amdouni scores against Forest,
but a big part played
by the teenager Luca Koleosho.
It's the second half under way.
Here's Gibbs-White. Hudson-Odoi.
Good football, this, from Forest.
Nottingham Forest keeping them
under pressure. Awoniyi.
Brilliant control. Hudson-Odoi.
He sets himself up,
and it's a beauty!
What a way to announce yourself
to the City Ground!
Listen to the atmosphere now.
All of a sudden,
things feel different in here.
To Berge.
Berge. He's gone in behind,
and he's left McKenna.
And Burnley back in front,
and it's Lyle Foster!
What a start to the season
he's having!
And the visitors strike twice
at the City Ground.
(COMMENTATOR) Sander Berge there.
They will check
whether it comes off his hand.
It's a close one, isn't it?
This will be heartbreak for Burnley
if it's ruled out.
VAR is saying
it's a deliberate handball.
I'm really not sure.
Gonna be ruled out.
No goal.
No bounce-back for Burnley.
Vincent Kompany's expression there
said it all.
Only a few minutes left here.
Roberts launches it towards Berge.
Will it drop to Brownhill?
It did.
It sounds like Rob Jones
is going to be sent to the monitor.
(COMMENTATOR) Well, Ryan Yates
was left in a heap.
He's got hold of Foster,
who elbows him in the chest.
And he could be in trouble here.
On a night that held so much promise
for Lyle Foster,
he's going to be leaving it
relatively early.
Look at his face.
He knows what he's done.
We all have these moments
of madness on a football pitch.
Him and Burnley
are gonna pay the price.
Guys, I know we have
a lot of new players,
so just one habit for everyone.
We haven't done it this season,
but the shirt, yeah?
Anass has got no excuse. The shirt,
don't put it on the floor, yeah?
Far too valuable. Far too valuable.
Thousands, hundreds of thousands
of people would die
to be in your position. Yeah?
The most valuable thing in the world
we've got is this. I would die
to be in your position again. Right?
The next thing, boys,
I'm really proud of you,
because if you look at where we are,
if you look at where we are,
it's just a matter of time,
so keep going.
We fucking grafted. The striker
had fuck-all. We dealt with it well.
Keep working on that.
Every single time we have the ball
we are dangerous.
Today was not our day with luck,
OK, we got the handball.
Lyle, we've discussed this
in pre-season, but Lyle,
(CHUCKLES) it's a thing
where for me, as a coach,
normally I can't accept it, alright?
But I just want to make sure
the team understand.
Lyle mentioned one thing
about mental health. OK?
We're there for you.
The team knows it's a mistake, OK?
We can't have those mistakes,
but if someone gives everything
on the pitch, sometimes fuck it,
you know.
It's tough to say,
but sometimes it's like this.
The reason why I say it is
because I don't want you to go
into a dark place now.
Stay with us. Keep him with us,
boys, OK?
Everybody else, well done,
and we go again.
It's a long season,
it's a good point, and we go again,
boys, yeah? Wins will come. Alright?
Well done. Congrats.
In that moment in time
of course you have to think
of the group, and the group
always comes first,
but it can't also be
at the expense of someone
that is already
dealing with other issues.
(KAY BURLEY) Confirmation now
that HS2 Northern leg
will not go ahead.
(NEWSREADER) It is news
that will come as no surprise
to anyone,
especially in the North.
The speculation that HS2
wouldn't stretch past Birmingham
proved correct.
I keep coming back
to this whole thing
about the natural size of the club.
You can go up and down the UK
and you'll struggle to find a town
this small with a club this big.
Towns of 95,000 people,
their football teams
are in the National League,
they're in League 2, in League 1.
Burnley
has a Premier League team.
It's ridiculous, remarkable.
We have no right to be
a Premier League team.
There's nothing in our make-up
makes us a Premier League team,
but we are.
Thank you very much.
The link between the community
and the club,
it's something quite unique.
I don't think
there's any other place
I can think of
where every household
has at least a couple of people
who are at the match every weekend.
I think they've got something
that they can be proud
getting behind, you know.
I'm from the North.
I know what it's like
to go from one end of the street
to another and just see boarded up,
boarded up, closing, closing down.
Without the football club
there's nothing here anymore,
not just in Burnley,
but lots of other places
in this part of the country.
We're gonna live or die together,
and I think we need to create
that kind of culture where we know
we're not the best, we know
we're not the biggest, we know
we're not the richest,
but our will to win
and our ability to support
the players is gonna be crucial.
(COMMENTATOR) A warm welcome
to Turf Moor
for Burnley's Premier League game
against Manchester United.
It's one of the biggest fixtures
of the season.
Hey, you're walking!
All's well.
How we doing? You feeling great?
Good. We'll get you all set, OK?
Yeah. Listen, you're gonna score
so many times. This is nothing.
OK? And as you get used to
these guys being jerks to you
We've got to get
that connection
between the club and the fans
to be a massive asset.
When teams come to Turf Moor,
it should feel unpleasant for them.
We should make it as hard
as possible for them
to take points from us
in our home stadium.
(COMMENTATOR) Roberts in behind
here, and this is really promising.
He's dug it out.
A fine save from Amdouni.
A Premier League season for Burnley,
the fans have a job to do.
For the 90 minutes, your job
is to help raise the level
of a team that shouldn't be here,
because if we leave it
just to nature we won't stay here.
You have to assume the worst
with the quality
that these guys have got.
(COMMENTATOR) Opportunity
for Fernandes to take it on.
And take it on he did!
Especially with a young group
of players, we're asking boys,
18-year-old boys, 19-year-old boys,
20-year-old boys,
but we're asking those boys now
to be flawless
on the most demanding stage
in the world.
(COMMENTATOR) An opportunity here!
Amdouni is fractions away.
And it's a big ask.
(COMMENTATOR) Burnley did have one
or two chances second half,
but in the end,
United just about did enough.
(KOMPANY) It's a tough league,
a league with a lot of challenges,
but I think our fan base
is behind the club, is loyal,
and it doesn't become a fortress
because you say it.
You know, you work at it.
It's, for me, it's the goal
to make it happen.
Great to have you.
Very well.
I know you're looking at all
our players, because we have
so many English players. (LAUGHS)
It's nice to be in a position
where we actually have people
coming.
Well, no. You have a job to do.
That's not fairweather,
let's just be clear.
This is the assumption,
if I go before Ten Hag
you'll be quicker
with your questions,
cos you'll want to ask
a lot of questions to Ten Hag.
So I hope he comes through, yes.
I think I'm fortunate enough
to still find this
the most incredible job
in the world, but I suppose
it goes a little bit from a game
to a job,
and the innocence of it,
definitely, and the surroundings,
that's the thing that changes,
of course.
When you're a child
it's about the jokes
in the dressing rooms,
it's about the game
as much as what happens after
and before the game,
and in first team football
it's about enjoying, but enjoyment
comes only with winning.
Just trying to find answers.
You never learn more
than when you're losing, or,
if I can say this,
getting your arse kicked.
That's when you're learning,
and there's been a couple of months
of learning!
Connor all fine in training,
hamstring all fine.
We'll do a little check on him
this morning,
but he looks good enough to give him
the green light to train today,
and if he's good after today
he'll be available for you tomorrow.
One to flag, really,
I just noticed it
over the last few days,
Luca has just started to get
a bit loose around the gym.
He looks a bit scruffy
and a bit tired.
He was in the Euros in the summer.
He changed country as well.
But anyone, even a senior player,
that would be a lot.
It's not because he's part of
a group or something that's -
It barely got mentioned
on Saturday night, he was out
with Benny,
so that was the red flag for me,
when that got mentioned.
Seriously, guys, Saturday night
and none of you would have gone out?
Hundred percent.
I'm glad it's not
if you said he went out on Wednesday
we've got a problem, but Saturday
No, but I've pulled him once
on this already this season,
so I don't think
I need to pull him again.
But I think it's one as well,
Bellers, he's in your group,
maybe to just have a
like a friendly word with him.
Again, Johi's all good.
Jacob just tired yesterday,
really tired, so we'll just check
to see how he is today.
Little bit tired in his groin,
but that was expected,
because he'd had two
good training sessions,
should be fine.
Shouldn't be any issues.
The difference between speaking
about winning and actually winning,
being part of winning teams,
is mentally having that toughness
to always keep doing
what you have to do,
because you believe your moment
might come. Someone's else's moment
is coming.
We don't know who,
but you have to have the belief.
That's the starting point. OK, boys?
Alright, let's go,
onto the next one.
(ANDY TOWNSEND) That game tonight
is a significant one.
Burnley desperate to get up
and running, get something tangible
on the board.
(FAN ON RADIO) A lot of people
are calling it a must-win.
I don't think it can be,
six games into the season.
(FAN ON RADIO) Yeah, it's gonna be
a really important game
for both sides tonight.
We need to get three points.
I mean, I don't like to blame
the fixture calendar, but we had
Man City, Villa, Spurs.
All the teams we've played have been
right up there right now,
and now we've got Luton,
we've got Brentford, we've got
Bournemouth, we've got Palace.
(PUNDIT) Burnley arguably need
the points more.(TOWNSEND) They do.
We've seen already enough
this season to see they can play,
they know what they're doing,
but you've got to get up
and running,
otherwise you start
getting dragged down.
Going to Luton, it's always gonna be
a horrible place to go,
no matter what division they're in
or what time of year it is.
When you've come up
from the Championship
and you're facing a team
that you played against last season,
it's a big game.
We go out there, I want to show
who we are.
We need the points.
It's crunch time now,
especially for us.
Let's go, boys.
Get together. Boys, I've spoken
a lot in recent days.
Bellers, give us a few words.
Guys, we've been here.
We know what it is.
Fucking you have to fight
for each other.
The man fucking next to you
will look after you.
Do not fucking worry about that,
but earn the fucking right.
You have to do the basics, boys.
When we don't have it,
go get the fucking ball back.
Go and pressurise them.
They're playing?
Not a fucking problem.
Fucking always been that way,
and it is this fucking way.
We fucking cherish that shit.
This is more important to us
than fucking anything!
Football comes second.
It's what we're like
without the fucking ball!
That's our identity.
That's how we go in here today.
We do that, we fucking win this!
Let's fucking go!
(COMMENTATOR) The stage is set
under the lights.
There's Charlie Taylor on the move.
Now it's Amdouni!
He's unable to get a shot away,
but a brilliant run
from Charlie Taylor.
Encouragement for Burnley.
Burnley are looking to
move up the gears again.
Beyer to Brownhill, who's more than
capable from that kind of range.
Not that time, but Burnley
are posing a real threat.
Here's Burger.
Lyle Foster is on the move here.
It's Foster! He's done it!
Big goal for Burnley!
They lead at Luton,
in sight of their first win
back in the Premier League.
It's the breakthrough for Burnley
just before the break,
and Lyle Foster on his return
to the team has got the goal.
Here we go then for the second half.
Luton hoping to find a response.
There is Jacob Brown.
Taylor back
playing his defensive duties.
Luton are on the attack.
The ball's swung in.
It's Brown's header!
It's off the line superbly
by Cullen,
and James Trafford gathers!
Luton are getting closer
and closer to an equaliser.
So Burnley make this change.
On comes Bruun Larsen.
Luton have been so patient
in possession.
Now they move up the gears
with Chong.
Burke is in the middle,
gets his head to it.
Now it's Adebayo on the spin!
That goal has been coming!
Luton Town level, and Rob Edwards
is as wound up as the crowd.
This game is being played
at a great pace,
and Burnley are looking
to hit Luton Town again here,
having just been hit themselves.
There's Bruun Larsen.
It's Larsen!
It's a work of art!
Luton were level
for a matter of seconds.
Burnley hit back.
That is how to respond.
And that's it.
There is the full-time whistle.
And that is the first
Premier League win of the season
for Burnley. Huge relief
for Vincent Kompany and his side.
They had to do it the hard way.
Well done, boys.
Let's keep this feeling.
Let's remember this feeling, boys.
Remember this feeling.
We will take that.
Let's fucking go, boys.
(GROANS)
Alright, boys,
listen up for a second.
I don't know if you remember
when we had the meeting
and I told you about
each and all of us
in this dressing room,
we have a story. Of course
you've got the story of lads
in this team who battled today
to get the first three points
of the season in the Premier League,
yeah? And the stories are
a few people like Charlie Taylor,
start of the season, pre-season,
had to deal with a lot of things,
transfers and everything,
and, you know,
we had the conversation
about things like you do, you know,
manager to player,
and adult to adult.
But working hard, still keeping
to his standards,
today playing
a fucking phenomenal game.
Story of fucking football,
story of life. Just believe.
Stay at it.
For someone that I've known
for a little bit longer,
Bruun Larsen, you know,
I know the talent you've had
for so many years. Like Jacob,
when he was 18, 19,
he was one of the top talent
in Europe.
Injuries, lots of struggle,
lots and lots and lots of injuries
and struggle, but top mentality
and always believed.
Today gets his reward and we get
the reward because of Jacob's belief
for so many years,
way before you scored this goal.
Way before you kicked this ball.
Today you get three points.
The story of Jacob is the story
of all of us, guys. OK?
So Jacob, your turn to just say
a few words.
I hope you've got
something lined up.
I've absolutely nothing, sorry,
but let me try.
Just well done, lads,
first three points.
Happy that I could help you,
but you helped me,
we helped each other and, yeah,
I'm fucking enjoying this moment.
Let's fucking go again.
Put the music on,
and then we're off, lads. Well done.
(PUNDIT) Burnley have just released
a statement concerning Lyle Foster.
We're losing our best player,
but you have to put the human first.
(COMMENTATOR) Disaster for Burnley.
If you leave with 30 minutes
to play, we've got to do something,
and we can't just turn on AC/DC
and crank it up.
The only people we've got now
is this dressing room.
That's all we've got.
Everybody else, guys,
has written you off.
It's not fucking personal.
It's fucking business.
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
You're not gonna get the ball
by asking nicely! You take it!
It's fucking life or death!
(ROCK MUSIC)
