The Heart (2014) s02e01 Episode Script

Surrender

(light relaxing music) Ashley? You just gonna stand there watching, or are you gonna come join me? I think I'll join you.
(sensual soft music) I can't believe we've been in this room for two days.
Well since this is the last day, why don't we go for three? (light slow music) (heart thumping) I love the feel of your hands on my body.
And I love the feel of you inside of me.
I love you, James Brooks.
I'll go shower now.
Ashley.
Would you like to join me? I'll be there in a minute.
(phone ringing) Hello.
Did I ever mention how much I enjoyed our trip? Yes, you did, several times if I can remember correctly.
Is this my thank you for the 10 day booty call? You are not, and have never been a booty call, Ashley.
I can get sex from any woman, that's not what I ever wanted from you.
Wait a minute, calm down, I was only joking, and what do you mean you don't want sex from me? I certainly want sex from you, Mr.
Brooks, and lots of it.
I think I can accommodate you on that.
You seem like you were a little quiet on the flight home, is something on your mind? Yeah, that's for me to handle, not you.
But get off my phone and let me call mom, JD, Tracy, Cynthia.
Okay, okay, I got the message.
All right, I'll call you later.
This can wait 'til later.
Okay, Cynthia, who's the target this week? Or is Gavin still lurking around? Okay, so just put all my business out there on the street.
Wait a minute, someone in here didn't know you were sleeping with the Governor wannabe? Um, I didn't know she was sleeping with him, okay? What the hell you think they were doing Tracy? Okay, you've seen them at the mans own engagement party lockin' lips.
Tracy's just sayin' they could've been playin' tongue twister or something.
(laughing) Before you guys get too carried away with your sarcasm, it would be wise to remember you're in my house, about to eat my food.
I have no problem putting each of you out the door.
[Female.]
Well, yes ma'am.
Well except for your Rhys, you kind of gotta cook first.
That's right girl, don't mess with the cook.
So Cynthia, what's the deal? Girl, I had to let that go.
After JD and Tracy's wedding, it appeared that Gavin and Caroline were getting closer again, so I'm back on the prowl.
Aw, hell, sisters grab your man and hold on tight, okay.
(laughing) Listen, you mess with Marco, and I'm gonna have to cut you, okay? You come after Jeffrey and he will cut you.
Whatever, enough about me, I'm tryin' to hear about James and Jamaica.
Girl did you rock his world or what? You know I don't kiss and tell.
Whatever, that's exactly what she called all of us over here for.
Well, all I can say ladies, is that when I got there, there was one island, and I believe I rocked this man's world so hard, there are now two islands, okay? The original and the one where the hotel is now located, okay? I heard that.
(light giggling) I want to know, did the wife show up? Ex-wife, and no.
James said he was gonna handle that and I trust that he will.
Well, she doesn't appear to be easily handled.
Hell, she reminds me of Caroline.
I don't understand how she ended up at the wedding, when she's not in Jeffrey's circle of friends, or my circle of friends.
[In Unison.]
David.
(phone ringing) Stanley, this is James Brooks.
How are you this evening? Hello James, thank you for returning my call.
Yeah, I'd like to talk to you about Harrison's future.
I'd like to get him ready for the Governors race next election.
As his campaign manager, it's up to you to prepare him for that position.
JD's not going to commit to anything at this time, he wants to succeed at this campaign before venturing into thinking about another.
The best we can do is keep him close to Gavin.
In addition, we need to make sure that Gavin and Daniel have successful campaigns.
Oh, I agree, yeah the more he learns from Gavin, the better off he'll be.
We just need to align him with the right people in his corner.
Do you have someone in mind? I do, I will be meeting with people of interest this week.
And if anybody, I believe, can further that agenda, I'll send them your way.
We have to make sure we have the best and brightest for this one.
The Attorney General and Governor's race is not the end for him, you keep that in mind, okay? JDs political career has my full attention, Stanley.
Let me know what you recommend for his team of advisors.
(phone ringing) Morning.
[James.]
Hey Pop, how's it going? Yeah, your mom's driving me crazy, I gotta find something for her to concentrate on.
You know what, I'll tell you what son, you think you can hook up with someone, get them pregnant, and give your mom a grandchild or something? [James.]
(laughing) I would like to accommodate you there pop, but, um, no.
(laughing) Yeah, I guess I gotta get Nick to do that.
So son, tell me, what you need? Today's not Sunday.
[James.]
Pop, I wanna tell you about a decision I made and that I need your guidance.
Oh really, most people call me for their guidance and then make a decision, but I guess you always did your own thinking, right son? [James.]
I believe I got that independence from you.
Hmm.
[James.]
Pop, I resigned my position with the state.
I've decided to become the campaign manager for JD Harrison.
He's a young district attorney here at Richmond, who's running for Attorney General.
No, no, no, I know exactly who he is and I think he has a very, very bright future ahead of him, but it was my understanding, that he's not interested in going into politics.
[James.]
He has decided to try his hand at it, and I'll be steering his career.
That's where I need you.
Hmm.
This is not an ordinary man, Pop.
He's young with a sense of responsibility of a man twice his age, he has the provisional intelligence and a heart that truly belongs to the people.
And that touch of arrogance that makes him believe he can accomplish anything.
You know what son, it sounds like you're developing a presidential candidate than attorney general.
I am pop, and Stanley Covington agrees with me.
All right, I'll check on them for you.
You know, in the meantime, why don't you invite he and his wife over to dinner? Okay, give your mom something to do, we know she likes the social gathering stuff with the high and mighty.
Ah, I don't know about that just yet Pop.
We'll see what happens.
Okay, whenever you ready boy.
(phone ringing) Hello.
[Ashley.]
After 10 nights of having your hard body next to mine, there's no way I can go to sleep holding a soft pillow.
I know it's late but would you mind opening the door for me? (laughing) I never locked it.
Is Claire here? No, she's not in 'til tomorrow.
Good.
You know, if you keep going around like that, you're gonna catch a cold.
Well I suggest you find a way to warm me up.
Oh, how would you like to meet my parents? Are they here now? No.
I would love to meet your parents but right now, my cookies are hot, and they're just gonna have to wait a little bit.
Okay, I think I'll take those cookies right now.
[President Obama.]
It's an election season, expectations for what we will achieve this year, are low, but Mr.
Speaker, I appreciate-- (knocking on the door) Thank you for coming in, please have a seat.
Appreciate the opportunity Sir.
David, look I know you're currently working on the Roberts campaign, however, another opportunity has presented itself, and I think you'll be perfect for it.
Okay, what do you have? Well, as you know, JD Harrison is running for Attorney General, but we have bigger plans for him.
The DNC would like to put together the best and brightest on his team, and we'd like you to consider switching over to his campaign.
Harrison? Mmm Hmm.
Very interesting.
Have you had an opportunity to speak with the campaign manager for Harrison? I believe his name is James Brooks.
James and I have all ready discussed this, he agrees that more advisors are needed.
I mean, is there some reason you wouldn't want to work on the Harrison campaign? No, nothing I can think of.
Hello, sweetheart, hi.
These are for you.
Thank you, they're beautiful.
I hope that didn't hurt.
You know those flowers are pretty, but they are no comparison to your beauty, by any means.
Oh, I have amazing news, so I spoke to Stanley Covington today, and he asked me to be a personal advisor to JD Harrison for his new campaign.
And the next one, and possibly, wait for it, the Presidential race 12 years from now.
Babe, come on, you know what this means right? They finally recognize my talents.
They know that I am the only person that can help Mr.
Harrison get to that White House, right? It's about damn time they recognize that.
Yeah.
But baby, this will be great, because I will be working non-stop for the next 12 years.
It's amazing, right? Well there is that whole James Brook situation.
I'm gonna need your help with that, all right? I'm gonna need you to convince him to allow me to be part of the team, and the rest will be history.
You can help with that, right? David, you know I would do anything to help you.
Yeah.
But James is gonna be a hard sell, especially after this.
You know he suspects that you were hitting me before.
No, no, no, look, baby, you know that I would never try to hurt you.
All right, I love you.
I was just frustrated about this whole job situation.
But sweetheart, this is for a permanent gig.
All right, you have to help me.
And I promise, I will never, ever raise my hand to you again.
Okay, I love you, baby please, help me with this.
Okay, baby, I'll do what I can to help.
Good, here, call him now, right now.
I wanna work on this ASAP.
Honey, why don't you let me speak to him alone first.
I can set up a meeting for you two, and that way you can sell yourself to him.
You always been so good at that.
And why exactly, do you need to meet with him alone? Well, I wanna set the stage for you, you know, let him know that it's coming from me, not you.
I don't want him to think you asked me to talk to him.
I like that, I like that, that works, yeah.
Yeah, good, okay, and guess what, hey? If all this works out well, we can start working on that family you always wanted.
Would you like that? That would be wonderful.
So call him, let's go.
Honey, I said I'm gonna set up a meeting for you two.
Come on, I don't want to wait, this is important.
I know, right but I-- This is a permanent job, come on.
I know, I'm gonna help you, I just, I need some time to talk to him alone.
Okay, I trust you.
All right.
(dramatic music) Hello Karen.
How are you? I'm doing better, thanks for coming by.
I would've come sooner if I had known.
Would you like to tell me what happened? Someone attacked me in my home a few days ago.
What is it going to take for you to realize that your life is not as it should be? James, I Karen, you don't have to tell me what happened.
But you should tell the police.
They were called this time, my neighbor noticed the back door was open and came in looking for me.
I honestly don't know what would have happened if she hadn't come by.
Did you tell the police what actually happened? No, I can't do that to David.
James, I can be really irritating sometimes, I don't mean to be, it just happens.
I think the fact that I'm successful in my career, and his success just kind of comes and goes with each campaign, it just, kind of, throws him over the edge.
He doesn't take defeat very well, he never has.
There is never a reason for him to hit you.
That might be the excuse you wanna put on it, but that's a bunch of bull.
Well, you know what, that's the excuse I have to put on it because the alternative, it, it just isn't acceptable to me.
What alternative? The alternative would be that David doesn't love me, and I'm sorry, I just can't accept that.
James, David is the only man I've ever loved, I was 17 when I met him, I'm 29 years old.
He's all I've ever know my adult life.
I love him, I understand him and his needs.
Besides, I mean husbands and wives fight.
Don't you and Ashley fight? Sure, Ashley and I fight, but I don't hit her, men don't hit.
Karen, I understand your position but there is a life out there, without violence, especially from the one, the person who's supposed to love and protect you.
I know, and I want that life with me and David.
That's why I called you here tonight.
You can help me get that life with him.
Uh, the only way I know how to help you with that is to kill David and resurrect him, and I don't really think that's happening these days.
No, I don't think so either.
How can I help? Give David a chance to work on Harrison's campaign.
You know he's an excellent political advisor.
JD could really benefit from his experience.
Have you lost your mind? Do you know you're asking me to walk into a mine field? James, I know what position this puts you in with Ashley.
Hell, Ashley isn't the one I'm concerned with.
Do you know what JD would do if he found out about David and Ashley, do you? I don't think you do.
All right, let's say the story never gets to JD, how do you propose that I convince Tracy to have David working with her? And since you mentioned it, how the hell do I explain any of this to Ashley? Have you thought about that? You do know that I love this woman.
James, you can tell Ashley and Tracy the assignment came from a DNC, which would be the truth.
What are you talking about? Stanley Covington asked David to begin working as Harrison's political advisor.
James, this could be the chance I need to get my life together, please.
Just tell me you'll at least meet with him before you completely close the door.
(sensual music) Hello.
Hello.
I'm sorry, I got caught up with something with Karen, and I couldn't leave.
There's this invention called the telephone.
It was invented by a black man, you know? But they give Bell all the credit, but I know better than that.
Yes, I know this communication device well, but I wasn't in a position to be able to call you until I was all ready late, you forgive me? No.
(mumbling) No.
Please.
Are you begging? With my tail wagging.
Oh, you beg so well.
Tell me something, when you dated Holt, did he ever hit you? Why you asking me about David? I need to know, did he? Sometimes.
And so you didn't tell JD about the attempted rape and the fact that he hit you, why? I don't know, I was young.
I mean, that's not something to be proud of, you know? You know I would never touch you like that, ever.
All right, now you're not touching me in any way.
(mumbles).
You think you can do something about that? I might be able to do a little something about that.
Well, good morning! Oh, hey girl.
[Woman.]
What are you reading? Girl, I started reading this book last night, and I cannot put this down.
[Woman.]
Who's it by? It's the author named Abyou.
She's really good, got some stuff in here I wanna try on James.
(laughing) Oh, it must be some good stuff in that book.
Well get your read on.
(door alert ringing) Was that Tracy? I missed it, I guess so.
Tracy, are you in here? Go check.
Tracy? (toilet flushing) Tracy, what's going on, are you okay? Yeah, I'm wonderful, don't I look wonderful? You look like crap if you want me to be honest.
How long have you been sick? A few days.
(gagging) I'm calling Momma.
Hey Mom, Tracy's been throwing up the past few days and I'm not quite sure what to do.
Okay, okay, all right, thank you.
I'll be back.
Okay.
All right.
(bouncy carefree music) Don't give me that look, it is conceivable.
Do you need me to read the instructions? No, I think I can read.
How long do we have to wait? It was done five minutes ago.
Are you gonna check it? Mmm mm, are you gonna check it.
Okay, chicken.
Well, what do you think, a boy or a girl? Let's try it again.
Oh, come on Tracy, no matter how many times you do it, it's still gonna say the same thing, okay? Pregnant, pregnant, oh wait a minute, what's this one, pregnant.
We're gonna have a baby.
I'm gonna be an auntie! We're gonna have a baby.
Uh, that's how we do.
Come to daddy baby.
(slapping hands) Let's do this.
You know, this isn't a bit easy, you guys need five, (mumbles).
Put us down for seven.
Nah, you know what, put it down, put it down.
Because guess what, somebody's gettin' up this hand.
(women laughing) Cynthia, you have like six pairs of my shoes right now.
Well that's what friends are for, right? Let Dionne Warwick tell it.
Um, what do you keep looking at? Ya'll are so, like children.
(women talking loudly) Sweetheart, can you come give me some help, babe.
Don't be jealous.
Hold up, hold up, don't move, don't move.
Right hand behind the head, I'll take that, left hand behind the waist, of course, all right I got it, let's play.
Hey, listen, sometimes you gotta take notes on this love thing, you know what I'm saying? Don't worry about that, bro, because when it's your time, you'll know what to do.
But until then, go ahead and eat that up.
Hey Tracy, you change the cards when you came over here.
Girl, if you keep that up you're gonna get pregnant before you know it.
Wait, are you pregnant? Very much so.
Are you serious? Why didn't you tell us, oh my goodness, how long have you known? I'm telling you now.
Boy, are you serious? Yeah-- Hey man, congratulations, man! Yeah boy! Yeah baby.
You don't miss, do you, that's what I'm talkin' about.
Hey, I aim to please, baby, I aim to please.
Thanks cuz, thank you.
I need some professional advice.
You sound serious, what's going on? Do you remember David Holt? From the wedding? Mmm hmm, his wife works for me.
I think that he abuses her, in fact, she was just released from the hospital the other day.
I've always had an idea that she was being abused, but never could confirm it until now.
And she told you this herself? Not directly, but yes.
So this is my issue, Holt is a political advisor.
Yeah, he's damn good at what he does, the Chairperson from the DNC wants me to put him on JD's campaign, Karen wants me to consider him for the position.
She thinks if he's working than the abuse will stop.
Okay, I get it, will he be an asset to JD? There's no question about his ability.
My problem is that I don't like him.
You don't like him because of his past relationship with Ashley.
Talk to the man, see what he can do before you make a decision that you might end up regretting.
Tracy told me that you might be interested in breaking away from the agency and starting your own business.
Are you still considering that? I could be persuaded, what you got in mind? Are you available to meet with me? I have a business proposition for you.
Is this a private conversation? James wants to talk to me about a business proposition.
To be honest, I didn't think his pockets ran deep enough for me and Ashley.
You know gentlemen, the last time Tracy was pregnant, we were pregnant, we never got a chance to celebrate.
You know, this is huge for us.
This time I don't wanna take any chances.
I have to make sure that Tracy and my unborn son, are safe.
Now, Bryan, you've always been the big brother I never had, and I know that asking you to leave the agency is a lot, but for what were about to embark on, I need to know that my family's safe, and I know that you love Tracy, just as much as I do.
Anything you need man, what's in my power, is yours.
Well, good man.
Well, I'll leave you two.
Where you goin' man? Go and find that beautiful sister of yours.
Hey man, you better James, what's going on man? How are you? I'm good, man.
James, why hasn't anyone told anybody about Ashley and Holt? Wow, you don't miss words do you? Ashley should have told JD about this when it happened.
I agree, but it's her decision not to, I have to respect that.
Tracy was a witness, she didn't tell JD either? Seriously, you think Tracy or Ashley would tell anyone anything about the other, they're thick as thieves.
Thicker, theives will eventually give you away.
So what do you wanna do, there's no way in hell you can hire this man to work on JD's campaign.
I plan on meeting with him, once that's done he'll be furious, after he beats the hell out of Karen, which I'm sure will happen.
I think he might come after Ashley.
Hold on, how far do you think Holt will go? Look at his history, I don't know how far he'll go, and that's what concerns me.
I can hire someone to handle it as a private matter.
Hmm.
But that's gonna cost you.
I don't care what it costs, I don't want anything to happen to Ashley.
Okay, so when you plan on meeting Holt? I'll set up the meeting for tonight, 6:30 at the Renaissance.
I'm gonna put Magna Rivera on him, at least we'll know where he it at all times.
Let's talk about your future.
Do you have a financial backing, or are you still looking to step out and start your own protection agency? Have my own agency, not answering to anyone? Yeah, I'll be a silent partner once the upfront loan is paid back, no interest, I'm completely out, it's your company.
So what are you getting out of this? Only if 10 or 12 years from now, JD could very well be running for President of the United States.
I want to be apart of that history.
Tracy's prepared a business plan for you, it's on your desk.
You were that sure I would accept? I saw the look that you and JD shared, you pledged your life to him, he accepted it and so did I.
Sorry, you're in the front office but everything upstairs is completely accessible to you.
Front off What you do, lease the whole building? No, I purchased it.
Purchased it, man, how damn deep do your pockets go? You're the investigator, you tell me.
(laughing) There's some people I'd like you to meet.
Frank and Kevin, this is Brian.
Hello, how are you? How you doin' sir? Nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you too.
Hey, it's good to see you.
James, what brings you by tonight man? (mumbles) Yeah, just stopped through to do a little small jobs around here, you know, keep the place straight.
Why what's going on, you need something? I'm meeting somebody I'm not particularly fond of, and it's for the campaign, but I need you to just sit around, keep me in check.
James, man I've never seen you lose your cool.
Well, except for the night of the wedding when Holt said something to Ashley.
And speaking of Holt, he just walked in through the door.
That's who I'm meeting with.
Courvoisier, Hennessy, or Jack? (mumbles) straight.
Brooksie Okay.
You got 15 minutes.
Wow, that's not a lot of time for me to tell you how I-- 14, 14 minutes.
Okay, wow, aggressive today, are we? My man, Hennessy, please.
Angry man, okay.
Brooks, we both know I am great at what I do, okay.
The Governors race is running smoothly because I'm involved, and I can do the same thing with the AG's race.
Now, when your boy tries to make a run for the governors seat, things are gonna get a little dirty, all right, because the higher you go, the dirtier the game gets.
And we both know your boy is straight laced as they come, and that's where I come in, because there's no one, no one better than me.
I know how to play the game at that level, I have a proven track record, and we both know this.
You got five minutes.
Come on man, wake up! Are you seriously gonna let something that happened between me and Ashley years ago, in college, mind you, affect Harrison's future? Come on, it was college man, things happen, she was young, I was young, mix a little alcohol, all right, throw some passion in, and clothes start flying.
All right, yada yada yada, she's satisfied, multiple times over again, no big deal, because that's in the past, that's there, I'm talking about now, here.
Okay.
That's there, here.
Okay, you wanna talk about the now? You wanna talk about now? Yeah.
How's Karen? Is she bruise free, at the moment? Let me ask you a question, how do you anticipate controlling your temper, if you were on this campaign? Better yet, how much damage do you think would be done, if it became public knowledge that one of the staffers was actually a wife beater? Wife beater? Yeah, what would happen if that candidate actually killed that staffer, because he tried to rape his sister in college.
You see these things don't go away man.
All right, and even if I didn't hate your guts, and my God, I do, I really do, you're still a liability for JD, and that is something that I will not, I will not allow.
You had no intentions of offering me this position, did you? So why in the hell did you waste my time? Because your wife asked me to, and I told her I would.
Oh, because my wife asked you to, really? Did you tell your precious little Ashley that you're gonna grant my wife's wish? Speaking of Ashley, let me ask you this, how long before she gets tired of your old ass? I don't know man, but you know what, it's just enough time for me to kick your ass.
Man, we can do this.
You gonna whoop my ass? Yeah, let it happen, let it happen.
You're gonna whoop my ass? Gentlemen, I think it's time for this interview to come to an end.
Angry man.
You are delusional old man.
What are you pushing, like 40, 45? What makes you think that you can satisfy a young and vibrant woman like Ashley, and keep her satisfied, huh? Because, you gotta remember, I taught her everything she knows.
I taught her how to be passionate, I used to call her my little wild cat.
(imitating cat meowing) Now, don't you think she'd be better off with someone young and vibrant like me, instead of someone old and tired like you? Not really, because she's with me, she's not with you.
Do you understand that? Yeah, I do.
Because she's choosing to be with a man, instead of being with a little boy, who takes things by force, man.
Yeah, do not think that I can't teach your ass a lesson right now, right now I will beat your ass, do you understand what I'm saying to you, do you understand what I'm saying to you? Right now? Yeah, we gonna make this happen? Let it happen, let it happen man.
I think it's time for you to leave.
Hey guys, I think it's time for you to leave my friend.
Really, okay, first of all, you can get your hands off of me.
Man, Brooksie, it's a great thing that you don't have a final say in this.
Expect a call from Covington.
Like I said, I know how to play a game, the dirty game, and I'm great at it, ask Ashley.
James, you can't let a punk that get under your skin, man.
You're an intellectual, beat him with your mind.
I shouldn't let him get to me, you're right.
Look, I don't know his history with Ashley, I don't know where she's been, but I know where she is now, she's with you.
So keep her there.
Got you, I've wasted enough time here tonight, so I'm gonna go ahead and go home, actually, okay? All right, if you need his ass kicked, just call me.
I got you.
(sensual soft music) (ringing echoing) Brooks.
I love you James Brooks, I know that you may not want to hear that, but I'm gonna tell you everyday until you tell me to stop.
I like it when you say my name.
I love the way your hands explore my body.
I love the way you look at me, when you think I'm not looking.
I love you, James Brooks.
Listen, I was sitting over there contemplating if I was gonna let you go.
Please understand letting my guard down is not easy for me, I don't like feeling vulnerable to anyone.
And I, oh God help me here, I love you Ashley, I should've told you that long ago.
Say it again.
I love you.
Again.
I love you Ashley Renee Harrison.
Again, and everyday for the rest of my life would be just fine.
That's not asking too much? Okay, well maybe not everyday but once a week will be okay.
I don't know mind saying that to you everyday for the rest of my life, but it will cost you.
Whatever the price, I will pay it willing.
Marry me? What, what did you just say? The price of hearing me say those words to you everyday, will you marry me, and never leave me, no matter what.
Yes, yes, yes.
Yes to which part? All of it, I couldn't run away anyway, no one can leave their heart behind.
I need to hear you say it.
Yes, I'll marry you.
And no, I will never leave you.
I think it's time for you to meet your future in laws.
(laughing) I want you to remember those words.
Wanna rain on a campaign? Is there a campaign you had in mind? Does the name Harrison ring a bell for you? Oh yeah, come here.
(slow gentle music)
