The Wanderer (2022) s02e01 Episode Script

Türkiye: Warm Regards from Antalya

1
Hello, everybody.
I am back in Türkiye
to be the wanderer for the third time.
This time I'm in gorgeous Antalya.
This is the first location.
And just look
how blue turquoise the water is.
Now, a few of my friends,
after they've seen the previous episodes,
have messaged me to say
that they really want to
come on some travels with me,
so I decided this time
to make it a little bit different.
I have invited my lovely friend Tabitha
and she's flying in tomorrow.
I'm very excited to see her.
She's a very adventurous person.
She's really curious and we both have
a love for the water as well, actually.
When I was little
I used to swim competitively
then I started scuba diving.
And Tabitha is a dive master,
so although we don't have a set itinerary
for this week of course, I know
we're going to be spending a lot of time
in the water I cannot wait to get going.
The Antalya region is so rich in history
and ancient sites.
So I've hired a bike to cover
as much ground as possible.
Being able to cycle through the ancient
sites is such a great way to visit.
There are so many beautiful
little towns, ruins and white
sandy beaches with turquoise waters.
And I'm not going to lie.
I was getting a little hot
so it felt absolutely necessary
to go for a swim.
The Ancient City of Side is an incredible
historical landmark,
and still to this day
has active excavations going on.
As I cycled around,
I wanted to take a closer look and meet
the people who work
in conserving these sites.
I think a lot of people might come to Antalya
thinking of it as just a beach destination.
But obviously with the historical side, do you think
that's really important for tourism as well?
I can't help but notice that you've got
quite a lot of women on your team.
Is that something
that you've consciously decided to do?
Or are a lot of women
really interested in archeology?
So you definitely have a very cool job.
You're like an Indiana Jones here.
And you must be excited
every day to go to work.
What is it about this line of work
that particularly excites you?
Can I touch?
Yes.
I was amazed that Dr Alanyalı has
dedicated her life
to the pursuit of ancient artifacts
and civilizations.
I was in awe of her passion
for searching for the unknown,
and how important it is to apply
the learnings of history into her life.
She also introduced me to Arif, the chief
architect of these sites,
who kindly showed me around.
You're quite young to be the architect
of all these sites are you not?
Thank you.
It's not until you come up to this viewpoint looking
around Side, there's just history everywhere. Isn't there?
Yeah, wherever you put the stool,
you find something antique.
You find something very old and very precious.
Have you got any dream projects that
you'd like to work on?
This is the dream project!
This is it! You're living the dream!
This is of course the dream project!
So I'm quite keen to visit some other
destinations as well.
Are there any other sites that you can
recommend to me?
You should definitely go to Perge also.
They have a lot of statues.
You could go to Sillyon as I mentioned,
really good antique cities that you can
visit while you are in Antalya.
There is Aspendos
the main theater there that has
been restorated,
and there are some really good events there.
I think tomorrow The Fire of Anatolia
is going to go there.
What I love about Türkiye is how great
the towns are to get lost in and explore.
The beautiful town of Side
is a perfect place to wander
where the old and new blend into one.
The crew insisted
we use a buggy to get around,
which of course did have its advantages.
I've had a brilliant day so far.
Made even nicer by this gorgeous sunset
and the food as well.
But I'm super excited for Tabitha
coming tomorrow.
As much as I cherish time on my own,
I'm very happy traveling independently.
There's something to be said about
traveling with a friend,
family, lover.
And just sharing these experiences
with somebody.
Sometimes at the end of the day
it's nice to have a bit of debrief,
and chat about what you enjoyed during the day,
what you're looking forward to tomorrow.
And it's particularly nice because Tabitha
has never been to Türkiye before.
I know she's really excited to be here,
and I think she's definitely going to
have a fresh new perspective,
and I'm really keen to see what
she's excited to do
and that we can share some
of those experiences together.
Okay, so I have just arrived in Turkey.
This is my first time ever visiting,
and I'm actually on my way to find Alex.
And Alex is somewhere in this beautiful
maze of this old town of Antalya.
I'm not allowed to use my phone.
And I only have two words to find where
she's at, and I keep mispronouncing it.
But I'm going to tell you them anyway.
And that is.
Börekçi Tevfik
We don't have it.
We don't have it.
No.
I'm looking for
Börekçi Tevfik
Börekçi Tevfik?
It's not here.
No?
Do you know where Börekçi Tevfik is?
This way. Yeah.
Yeah.
And then after, at the end,
if you turn left.
Not right.
Left.
Hope I didn't get up too late.
Hey.
Where is börekçi tevfik?
Left, right.
Left, right.
Yes.
Thank you.
Okay. I'm the first one here.
Hey, are you kidding me?
Hello.
They really call it The Wanderer.
They really made us work this. Right?
Oh, my gosh, it's
so good to see you, honey.
This has been such a build up.
Yeah, we got a little lost.
We got a little found.
We got lost again. And then I found you. So..
Do you want to go eat?
Yes. I'm so hungry. Come on.
Okay. Let's go.
Börekçi Tevfik
Börekçi Tevfik
Where did you pick that up?
Here! Wandering around.
Oh, you just flip it like that, right?
Okay. It's the spin, it's the spin!
It is the spin. It's like.
Oh, fold in. Right.
Fold, then fold in a little more.
On this side?
Okay.
And then you add?
I don't think either of us will be opening
a börek shop back home,
but it looks like the legend himself
gave us the seal of approval.
And to be honest, it tasted delicious.
Thank you.
I wonder if this is the one that we made.
Or the one that he made?
I think we nailed it.
Definitely.
By coming here we nailed it!
That was really special, actually.
I enjoyed that a lot.
There's so many ruins all over Turkey,
which has been really nice.
I keep calling it Turkey and I shouldn't.
Türkiye.
Türkiye.
Türkiye.
I had to learn that when I came to be
The Wanderer the first time.
Oh look. It would be the perfect spot
to get married.
That's true.
- You got this beautiful view.
And you're in the white dress.
Oh my gosh, this is beautiful.
This is the kind of view when you go
back and people ask about Türkiye.
This is it.
- You can tell them.
Look at these colors.
I can't wait to get in the water.
Guys, let's get down there right now!
It's so warm.
I'm going to take a mental snapshot.
I'm going to take one.
Oh, stunning.
Oh, stunning.
I want to go.
Can we go?
I'd love to.
Do you wanna go swimming?
- Let's go.
What about this one?
Oh, that's quite nice.
Konyaalti beach.
Konyaalti. It says it's the
Tripadvisor Travelers Choice Award
Best of the Best Winner.
Let's go.
It would make sense to go to
the one that's the best.
Let's go to the best of the best.
I only want
the best of the best.
Who are you?
- You're so popular!
You don't know who we are?
- No
Oh, that's okay.
I don't know who I am
half the time anyway.
They're just following us.
We're not really sure either to be honest.
- Hey.
Let's talk to these guys.
How are you doing?
- Good.
How are you?
- Where are you from?
I am from the United States.
Where are you from?
We're from Dubai.
Dubai?
And so what brings you to Türkiye again?
Golf.
Golf! No way!
So Antalya is really good for
golf, is it? I didn't know that.
It's exceptional for golf.
Brilliant, great golf courses, fantastic!
- They are in Belek.
- Belek, okay.
You have to go to Kaş.
Kaş is the best place in Türkiye.
Okay?
It's so wonderful.
Little shops. There are little shops.
It's exclusive.
So it sounds like
there's not a bad place in Türkiye.
No, it's all good.
- Everything is good!
Great to meet you.
Really lovely to meet you.
- Nice to meet you.
Have fun
Enjoy your week.
We will, definitely!
I bet you will.
Do you actually collect stones?
I do, I collect stones.
That's cute.
So the Miss Scuba International
essentially means that
for one year, you were the sexiest person
in scuba diving?
Let me give you a preview!
Yeah, no.
That's uh, yes no.
That's what it meant,
not what it meant.
So this is a really random
part of my life.
Okay?
But essentially what happened
was I've been scuba diving since 2010,
and I had a friend who was like,
I heard you were scuba diver.
And I'm curious if you'd like to represent
the United States
at the Miss Scuba
International pageant.
For like the first week
you're just scuba diving
and then there's an actual pageant night.
Amazing.
And so I had this crazy
Miss Congeniality moment
where, actually, the representative
from the UK, he would like,
stay up with me and like teach me
how to walk in like high heels and stuff.
You didn't have
to do it in a wetsuit?
Just the scuba diving part.
But thank goodness, no.
I did do the traditional bikini
walk though, on the pageant stage,
which was,you would think,
a thing of nightmares
when you're younger
and not in the pageant world.
But I ended up winning,
which was really incredible and wild.
I did not think I was going to win.
And so then I got to represent
conservation and women in scuba
diving for a full year.
That's brilliant.
Yeah, it's pretty crazy.
It was a wild time.
I had a funny moment, actually,
with also being taught how to walk.
Yeah?
I was doing some catwalk stuff.
And the guy coaching me
spoke for ages in Vietnamese.
And I turned to the translator
and I said "well, what did he say?"
"He said, you have a funny face."
He spoke for like ten minutes!
I'm sure there was more!
Yeah, I was like: "Cool, I'll work on that!"
Yeah. "Fix your face."
- I'll fix that for next time.
You're like, "I can fix yours buddy."
That's what I'd say.
What other appropriate conversations
can we have?
That aren't about you guys?
This is such a small.
This is lovely.
Beautiful.
Yay!
Arif had mentioned
there were shows going on at the Ancient
Aspendos Theater,
so I decided to treat Tabitha
and get her some tickets.
There's going to be a performance,
called Fire of Anatolia.
I feel like we're in Gladiator, walking out.
This is incredible!
This has to be one of the most impressive
spots for a theater I've ever seen!
Especially when it's still being used
and it's this old.
Shall we get a quick photo?
Yeah we should!
Also do you know what's a treat for me?
In England, you couldn't do this
because of the weather.
We would just be sat in the rain
- In the cold, shivering.
Shall we go and sit up there maybe?
We are on our honeymoon, actually.
- Oh, congratulations!
That's so exciting.
- Thank you.
Why did you decide to come to Antalya
on your honeymoon?
Because of all the touristic places
and also very sweet weather
and very nice sea.
We are childhood friends.
We grew up together.
- More than 50 years we are friends.
Oh, lovely.
Now we finally made it to meet here.
- Yeah.
You will love it.
We're really excited!
The Fire of Anatolia is a celebration
of all the traditional dances
across Türkiye.
The show was absolutely mesmerizing.
Seeing a show being performed in this
setting just makes it feel so special.
What a show.
What a place.
This is truly a once in a lifetime.
The valley was absolutely stunning.
I wasn't convinced charging down rapids
would necessarily be the best way to enjoy nature,
but actually, it really does give you a
sense of the power of nature.
Anyway, we really tried our best.
But to be honest, it was our guides' energy
that got us through it.
"You got to pump it up."
I was born in this river.
Especially because since I
when I was a child, I born here.
- You came?
Yes. I was born in this river. Really.
My mother put me in the water, and I learnt to swim.
Yeah it was like that.
- That's true, how it works.
So that's why
I am very lucky that I was born here.
Antalya has sea, river, mountains,
canyons, we have everything.
So we are lucky people here in Antalya.
And you're lucky to do what you love.
- Yes, I do.
- What do they say?
"If you do what you love,
you never work a day in your life."
You're living in the heaven.
Yeah, you're in heaven.
It was inspiring to hear Mehmet
talk about how much he loved his job,
how he'd be rafting these rivers since he was a boy,
and how grateful he is to have started his own business,
and share this stunning canyon
with people.
We were so lucky that at the hotel
we were staying at
there happened to be a jazz festival
going on.
There's lots of glamorous ladies
coming down towards,
the jazz festival.
And you're looking at two of them.
So we made a slightly dramatic entrance with our camera crew
and found ourselves a table.
It was a beautiful performance by Turkish legend, Fazıl Say.
Including some new versions of his songs
performed for the first time.
With a gorgeous backdrop as the sun was setting over the mountains,
and incredible music,
what a perfect evening to stumble upon.
We discussed going diving ever since Tabitha got to Antalya,
and booked a dive with the Nautilus Diving Center.
Nice to meet you.
I'm good. How are you doing?
My very first travels
without my parents were dive holidays.
Like it was what I saved up to do.
Learn to dive in the UK in a quarry.
So it was not like this?
No.
Started diving
and I suppose being in the water
has always been something that I've
particularly enjoyed,
especially on my travels.
Yeah. You got two mermaids here.
- Exactly.
I feel very peaceful when I dive.
When I'm underwater,
I'm just very calm.
It's like, yeah,
it's so tranquil, isn't it?
Unless, it's one of those things
that you can try and describe.
But unless you've actually done
it, it's really hard to translate.
But there is this serenity of like,
nothingness,
and you're in a whole new world
because that's what the ocean is.
It's the last frontier.
It's a completely different world
from the surface world.
For this afternoon,
we are going to dive at the canyon.
It is the famous place in Kaş, actually.
So, as you can see on the map,
there's a few small islands around it.
So we are going to choose the
closest one on the canyon.
Okay.
And after that, we are going to swim
all this shallow area
because this maximum is two,
let's say 2.5m or something.
Okay, okay.
And also we are going to see the some
wreck pieces around this area.
And after that
we will come to the top of the canyon.
Top of the canyon is three meters.
Bottom is 21.
So it's so nice to drop off, directly
it's going to the deep blue.
And our sea is so clear, so clean.
And we call
that one the turquoise blue.
You know, it's
every colors of shapes of blue
we have. We have a deep blue,
light blue, green blue, grayish blue.
Everything's we have.
- The spectrum of blue.
Yeah.
I kind of have just one last question
for you,
and it's an obvious question for us
because we're divers.
But for someone who doesn't know,
why is it important to protect our oceans
and make sure that these places
still exist for generations to come?
So, so, so important actually
protecting the ocean because life starts
already in the blue.
So if there is no life in the sea,
there is no life on the green.
Because water is everything, okay?
And also when you just put
the heads under the water,
you will be able to understand,
the sea, the marine life
they are so, so sensitive.
They are so fragile.
They need our help.
Otherwise we will not protect them, you know,
and we will going to lose them forever
and they will not come back.
I mean, the most important part of diving
is making sure you're doing it safely
because so many things can go wrong.
So that's why you have
so many, I guess, points of safety check.
You want to make sure that you air is on.
It's a good one
just to actually make sure it's on.
I think I heard you mention it,
the smell.
Make sure it smells good.
you want to make sure you have
everything you need.
Weight is a big one that I think
people forget is being properly weighted,
so you can be buoyant in the water.
And, being with your buddy
is also a really important one.
Oh, so she took the easy way.
Where she jumped in to put her wetsuit on.
Which is way more refreshing
than putting on
a five millimeter wetsuit in the heat.
I know!
Do you want to see the technique?
Come here.
We have a scuba diva.
Good.
That is sexy!
Do you like that?
That was good!
We have a scuba queen!
You're good.
There's two kinds of scuba divers.
Those who pee in their wetsuit
and those who lie about it.
Tuba told us about how this coastline
was a protected area
and how oceanic preservation projects
had created a dive haven
in the Mediterranean.
And you could tell.
I've done hundreds of dives
and I've never seen water this clear.
This is truly our happy place.
I feel so grateful for the opportunity
to be able to dive on this trip
with my friend.
I guess like a trip,
every dive is different.
You might have a rough idea
of what you'll do or see,
but there's pretty much always
something unexpected.
And this dive was no different.
It was absolutely breathtaking.
We navigated
through narrow canyons and over
gentle slopes,
each turn, revealing new wonders.
The deeper we went, the more surreal
the experience became.
As Tuba showed us
an old Turkish Air Force plane
that once transported parachuters
but now is a favorite dive site.
As we finally began our ascent
I couldn't help
but feel a deep sense of contentment.
This dive, like every dive, was a reminder
of the beauty and mystery
that lies beneath the waves
and the importance of preserving
it for future generations.
Thank you so much guys I really enjoyed today.
Hug time.
- We'll see you again, bye.
- Bye, thank you.
I didn't actually realize that,
cleaning a 2000 year
old mosaic was on my bucket list.
But I honestly had such an amazing time.
And I thought that you would really love
to come to Side as well.
This place is indescribable.
It's like one of those places
you have to actually walk into
to kind of get the feeling of, right?
Thank you for bringing me here.
And it's open so late.
I think that's quite unusual, actually.
It is! It gives you the opportunity
where you can actually enjoy the ocean.
Go scuba diving, go swimming,
go have the activities that they have
and then come and
enjoy this.
Yeah, exactly.
There's certain
friends that I love with all my heart,
but then I maybe wouldn't travel with them.
Or I certainly wouldn't
go on a big, adventurous trip with them.
Yeah.
So I'm really, really glad that it was
you on this trip.
I knew that we'd have, like,
shared interests and common interests.
Then this worked out.
But yeah, I wouldn't take everybody.
No. And I think there's also things
that we individually like.
And.. Oh yeah, I don't know.
It's just, such a different experience.
