And tonight I'm gonna show you how Vegas does magic.
Magic masterminds from Vegas and Chicago light up the "Wizard Wars" stage.

" Hi, everyone, I'm Ellen Fox and welcome to "Wizard Wars.
" Tonight, two teams of ambitious magicians will be challenged to create amazing routines, using everyday objects.
So let's get started and meet our judges.
Penn and Teller.
Christen Gerhart.
And Jason Latimer.
Now, it's time to meet our challengers.
This talented creator is a three-time winner at the annual World Magic Seminar.
It's Bill Cook.
In this contest I'm going against some of the best magicians in the world.
So being able to take the title of winner of "Wizard Wars" back to Chicago, that would be amazing.
Teaming up with Bill, a mentalist and sleight-of-hand artist, David Shareef.
In the magic community, I'm know as the baddest brother on the planet and the Muhammad Ali of magic.
I've been in a lot of magic competitions.
I I've never lost one.
And I want to stay undefeated.
Taking on the Chi-Town conjurers are a match made in Sin City.
Known for his wild sense of humor, it's Greg Dow.
In the magic world, I'm known for my larger than life personality and my shocking performance style.
Love me or hate me, you're gonna wanna watch me.
Joining Greg is a performer who has gained acclaim for his floating phone effect, Sean Scott.
I've been chasing magic for 25 years and I know what I'm doing.
And after all the blood and sweat and tears I've put into this stuff, I want to have something to show for it.
Now, each team will be given three of the same in an original routine.
A Tiki torch, a tennis racket and balls and mice.
Oh! You will be judged on your creativity, deception and showmanship.
David and Bill are first and they already worked their routine out, so let's see what they're planning on performing.
- Have you seen this before? - No.
You toss it, it links itself right on.
- That's nice.
- Isn't that cool? What about the tennis racquet? You want to try linking that with a tennis racket? It's an idea.
What are we gonna do with these, though? You can do a cup and ball routine, with that.
You could.
That's a really big cup and ball routine though.
Can we cut it? Penn and Teller do a two-person cup and ball.
How do we do this so that it impresses the people that do cups and balls? Fire.
There are no camera tricks on "Wizard Wars.
" David and Bill, take it away! - My name is Bill Cook! - And I am David Shareef! - And we are team - Bake and Shake.
Bill, check this out.
Yeah, uh-huh, yeah, uh-huh, you feeling that you feeling that? David, David, David, that is not a trick, man.
I I could do that, they can do that.
That, that, that wasn't the trick.
This was the trick.
What? What? Dude, that was awesome.
That reminded me, I have an idea.

Now, you've heard of tennis bracelet, now you have a tennis ring.
And you can put that on, accessorize any way you need to.
Probably couldn't hear me 'cause there's too much racket, but Yeah, I'm feeling it, I'm feeling it.
Ladies and gentlemen, we come from Chicago, David and I, and I don't know if you guys of what we consider to be close-up magic.
- That is right.
- And one of the oldest classics of close-up magic is a trick called the cups and balls.
And we're gonna perform the cups and balls In a unique way.
First thing, David, hold that.
Hold that.
We're gonna perform the cups and balls in a way That has never been done before! And is Uh, we're going to do it on fire.
Hot, hot.
Wait a minute, wait a minute.
We forgot something.
We, we, we took her ring - Right.
- and we promised to give it back and put it back exactly the way we found it and we didn't do that.
So here's what I want to do.
Uh, I'm gonna take this and cut it out.
Just like that.
Check this out.

See, see how the diamonds sparkle in the light and everything, check this out.

That is so cool! But ladies and gentlemen, tonight we did a world first.
We lit a ball on fire, we made it vanish and reappear, still burning underneath a cup.
And you're probably wondering how.
Well, the truth is, we trained a mouse.
A mouse to light matches.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Kevin the Mouse! Yes, yes! And wait, tied to Kevin, is this your ring? Is that your ring tied around the mouse? It's a ribbon! Is that your ring? Yes, yes.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are Team Bake and Shake! What the judges thought of this performance, Christen.
I really liked the creativity.
I would never have thought to use the top of the torch as the cup, but the, the ring-tennis racquet thing was my favorite.
Two, three.
You used the racquet as a racquet, which was great but the ring inside of it, when you had to cut it out, I thought that was a, a wonderful, visual thing to have happen in front of the spectators.
So that's very powerful and I really enjoyed it.
You guys, the energy you guys brought to the stage was just through the roof.
And you guys just delivered.
You did a great job with creativity.
Uh, I totally agree with, uh, Tiki torch, never would've thought of the idea of using it as a cup.
And then when you put it with fire, it made sense that it was a Tiki torch.
Really out-of-the-box thinking.
And Wizards, you better hope you're not going against these guys.
I'm with you.
Uh, the cups and balls, considered by many, although we don't have real proof of that, uh, is such a robust trick.
And adding the fire to it is really wonderful.
And also using, actually, the most traditional finish, and it was always baby chicks or some sort of animals.
It was always an live load and that's fallen out of fashion.
And bringing that back, uh, was perfect.
All right, we'll get to see what Vegas veterans Greg and Sean can do with the same three objects when we come back.

So let's see what they came up with.
I have an idea here.
I think, at the beginning, we can produce the torches.
Tennis balls come in a can Well, you do something with a can, don't you? Mm-hmm, kind of like recycling magic, you know.
Okay.
You can use objects that you find anywhere.
Ohh, wow! I want to do something that nobody is gonna see coming.
If you could find just a crazy way to make him appear at the end.
Right now, we're thinking about making the audience clap.
We need to think about making them scream.
And I think this guy's gonna help us the most.
I got an idea.
Greg and Sean, take it away! Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Greg from Las Vegas, Nevada.
This is my partner Sean from Indiana.
And we are here to amaze and astound you with three completely random items.
Item number one Tiki torch.
Item number two Racket.
And item number three has magically disappeared.
So now Sean is gonna do a trick with the tennis racquet he just produced and a tennis ball.
I I don't I don't have any balls.
I mean, you were supposed to bring the the balls The tennis balls.
Oh, the tennis balls.
I was supposed to bring those.
I went to the dollar store here in Las Angeles.
Apparently, when you go to the dollar store in L.
A.
and you buy tennis balls, all you get is the lid.
Go ahead, that, that's yours.
Uh Mm-hmm.
I don't think this will work.
All right, check this out.
Now that is how Indiana does some magic.
I'm gonna show you how Vegas does magic.
Oh! Now, uh, this one, I am actually going to run all the way back to the judges.
I am gonna go to the judge that is the best kisser.
So, um, Jason, if you would just, uh, throw your initials right there.
Just making sure you spelled it right.
And, uh, Sean, you ready, think fast! Now, what we have is a limited edition, one-of-a-kind, "Wizard Wars" signed tennis ball, right here.
That if we do not win, we're gonna start the bidding at the low, low price of $10,000.
We're gonna leave that right there.
Sean's gonna go off and get the next demonstration of the, the kind of stuff we came up with.
While he goes and does that, I'd like to kind of explain a little bit of me and Sean working together.
We didn't really know each other before.
Who would've thought, they would have taken a long-haired, loud-mouth magician from Vegas, and put him with somebody a little bit quieter and more talented.
And another thing that I found out about Sean, in working with him, is Sean can actually identify things, just by placing them in his mouth.
So, Sean, go ahead, have a seat.
And we are going to blindfold Sean.
So Sean, can you see anything? - No.
- No.
That's probably because we didn't use the prescription blindfold Ah.
That's what we should've went with.
Now, I brought up some, uh, some animal crackers.
Open up.
Show you guys.
Sean, what have I placed inside of your mouth? Tastes like camel.
Camel! Sean, open up.
Mm, uh, Rhinoceros.
All right.
I'm gonna go up one more level here.
Shh, lady, shh.
Sean, what have I placed inside of your mouth? It It tas It tastes like mouse.
It's a mouse! I'm I'm allergic to mice.
No, unh-unh.
Oh gee.
Oh, do we have a bucket? Hold on, hold on.
You know what, I just learned the Serena Williams Heimlich maneuver.
I, here, stand up, stand up, stand up, stand up, stand up.
All right.
Are those your initials on the ball? - Yes, they are.
- That is awesome.
It's not awesome enough.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is Sean, I am Greg, Jason, your tennis ball! Thank you and good night! Let's find out what the judges thought of your performance.
Penn and Teller? Uh, well, it's gratifying to see that a, uh, long-haired, loud-guy from Vegas and a smaller, quieter guy are just so good.
Uh, the effects in here were one after the other, just brand new ideas, just beautifully executed.
Uh, the tennis balls under the foot astonishing.
But, I think, we can speak with a great deal of authority to the fact that Teller and I worked for months, trying to get the penetration of the hand through the stomach, uh, with a with an item in it, to look good.
And we failed.
And in much shorter period of time, you succeeded completely.
So at least you beat us.
The personalities, so on point.
The jokes, perfectly on point.
The use of the room, perfect.
And the mouse in the tennis ball was spectacular.
Straight across the board, guys, every single effect was just bam, bam, just amazing.
That was just fun, it was great.
And the penetration of the, uh, tennis ball through the racquet.
Oh yeah, that was beautiful.
Ah, man, you guys are just so good, great job! We'll find out who advances to the "Wizard War" when we return.

" We just saw two teams of challengers put together mind-blowing magic, using the same three everyday objects.
What? What? Now, let's find out which team wins and will face our incredible Wizards in the "Wizard War" for a chance to win $10,000.
Penn and Teller, what did the judges decide? This is "Wizard Wars" at its best.
Every one of those acts was just using all the props, using them in wonderful ways.
Entertaining, funny, great teamwork.
It's what it's really absolutely supposed to be.
And I think it's safe to say it comes down to a very tight decision.
That new effects really impress us.
And our definition of new effects is maybe different than the lay audience.
It's not just stuff that you may not have seen, but stuff that we may not have seen.
And we saw really a lot of new stuff from Vegas, Sean and Greg and they win, but only by a nose.
By a mouse nose.
Congratulations, Greg and Sean! You will face two of our Wizards in the "Wizard War.
" But before we talk about wizards, let's talk about your challenge.
Each team must use the same four items associated with the beach at least once in your routine.
- Yeah.
- The objects are, a surfboard, a beach ball, seashells and a cooler.
Tonight's Wizards will be Billy and Shimshi.
Oh, boy, all right.
We have a workshop and a magic shop upstairs with everything you need to whip these beach-themed items into cutting edge illusions.
So, everyone, head on up! While the challengers are hard at work upstairs, let's have some more magic down here.
Gregory will be displaying some of the talents that have made him a legend in the world of magic.

All right, time for a little, uh, pick-pocketing but I need a victim, I need a victim, uh, a target, an easy target.

See how that works? It's hard to reach that far, right.
Our first volunteer, ladies and gentlemen, right this way! Here's what we're gonna do, this is about pick-pocket prevention, okay.

What you want to do is wrap it up like this, so it's completely hidden.

Smart man, smart man.
So you put it right over there like that.

Now, I'm gonna try to take that.
If we're on a subway, like this, we're on a subway, I'm the only one on the subway.
Subway, so, oh, there we go, like this.

The challengers are busy turning their seaside props into super fun magic.
So let's see how the routines are shaping up.
What about these? Well, I mean, small ones, small ones are coin size, so, you know, we could we could do some sort of coin magic with those.
Something vanishes and it reappears inside, like a cooler, maybe there's something inside the cooler.
Will a ball fit inside? I don't know, let's find out.
Hmm.
Let's, let's look in the shop.
Okay.
Let's see what we got over here.
Ooh, there we go.
Okay.
- Now, look at that.
- Um That, that is a Muumuu right there.
Really? Okay.
- Or we could take these two - And attach Everything can be made with duct tape.
- Um, it would come up.

So we could do the, the thing on the surfboard.
Finish with reproducing one of the shells inside the cooler.

Now, Sean and I, we are at the beach, but we are not at any ordinary beach.
We are at You know, I don't think it's our kind of beach, hold on.

We are gonna be at Mystery Beach.
Now, uh, here on Mystery Beach, we've got, uh, some pretty shells.
Look at what we got.
We got reds, we got greens, we got blues.
If you would close your eyes and reach your hand in.
Perfect.
And you've picked one of the red shells.
Now, you could've picked any of the colors out of there.
You went with the red one.
Let's take a look and see how things happen.
You know, let's have a beach party, hey, here we go.

Now, Mystery Beach is a very special place.

You can see that he was not very good at surfing.
He got in that first "Sharknado.
" Now, we're gonna leave him right there.
Sean has managed to channel the owner of Mystery Beach through this board, making it a Ouija surfboard.
Can I, can I borrow you, young lady? - Sure.
- What's your name? - Alona.
- Alona! Everybody give a big hand for Alona for coming up here.
Alona, I want you to stand right next to Sean.
I want you to put your hand under Sean's hand.
Just place your hand under Sean's hand.

Now, we keep a couple other really cool things inside of our cooler.
A little bit of dry ice.
Now, dry ice is a very dangerous substance.
It's frozen carbon dioxide, that can actually cause burns.
You usually want to handle it with gloves or some other precaution.
You really don't want to touch it like this, when you place it in Oh! Here, drop that inside.
Pour that in there.
I want them to see that bubble.
That is actual dry ice, right? Now, there's one more thing we keep inside the cooler here.
At Mystery Beach, we keep a bag of ice.
Inside of the bag of ice Sean, could you grab me that hammer, please? Inside the frozen block of ice, one red seashell.
Are those your initials? Those are your initials? Ladies and gentlemen, once again, this is Sean! I am Greg! Thanks for coming to the beach! Let's find out what the judges thought of this performance, starting with Jason.
I've worked with dry ice.
And I've burned myself horribly and I never would put it in my mouth.
And that's just awesome, just like the, the commitment to it.
There's a lot of engineering going on in your magic and I like the floating surfboard and I liked it having the audience volunteer underneath your hand as a proof.
I really appreciate the The thought behind your routine.
Thank you very, very much.
Um, we really liked it.
The worst thing we can say is that we believe you actually got the signed seashell into the block of ice.
And yet, when you did it, it wasn't really proven.
Uh, there were easier ways to do it than the way you did it.
We love the way you did it but it looked like it could've been done other ways.
But I just love this dynamic on stage.
I love these characters, maybe for, uh, personal reasons.
But I really thought it was great.
I would've loved to see more of the beautiful sleight-of-hand that we saw from you, Sean, in, in the first round.
And I was kind of expecting that big bang that you guys had in that first round.
But overall, I really, really enjoyed the creativity of you two as individuals, but also what you guys have managed to create together.

No, ladies and gentlemen, shortly, the judges and you will be shrugging shoulders in shock and surprise when we show you, not the shape, but the shadow and even sharper shot of the signed shiny seashell that's attached to Shimshi's shoelace on his shoe! Show them, Shimshi.

Uh, mostly because, after, you know, almost 40 years on the road, we realize how difficult it is to come up with a practical effect.
And, uh, you have a, uh, a suspension that has the image that actually is associated with the prop.
So you had a really nice justified suspension.
We just loved it.

Uh, this looks like a one, but if I flip it around, you'll see that it looks like a, like a three.
It's a very convincing illusion and you'll swear that you're seeing spots where maybe you didn't before.

But theirs was cleaner, it had a great trick, the Wizards win this one.
