Intelligence (2006) s02e02 Episode Script

A Man is Framed

Previously on Intelligence - He fired and killed our man here.
- I'm gonna pull you out of there, find some place to hide out and lay low.
You'd better tell someone Reardon didn't shoot those men, or I will.
You've got to promise me full disclosure.
You've hung yourself this time, Mary.
He can smell blood in the water.
Bury this thing deep and fast.
I'm sorry.
All right, was I speeding? - What's your name? - Mike Johnston.
What are you doing out here? Running some dope over the border? No, man.
What, are you running some dope over the border? What's with the cuffs, Bob? What's going on? Put him in Sweet's dressing room.
What's the problem? The man hunt for the killer of a DA agent continues.
James Reardon, a Canadian drug kingpin is still being What's up with Jimmy? What's going on? Let's talk about you and my money.
What the fuck do you think you're doing diseapering on me like that? What is your problem, man? I still got your money.
You're paranoid! What did I tell you, you pimple-assed dipshit? What did I tell you? I said, "Be on call.
" Right? "Be on call.
" - I was with Gloria.
- You're pathetic.
What's your problem, John? Are you a coke fiend now? Yeah, I got a little problem.
No, you got a big problem.
You got a huge problem.
You're supposed to be our straight man and look at you! You're running around chasing blow and pussy, at your age.
I apologise, OK? Ronnie, please, OK? I'm gonna get straight.
Please, Ronnie.
You need me.
OK? I'm your banker.
I'm your front man.
You need me! I'd say we got somebody at the back door.
Is he back? Did he make it? We haven't heard.
Go sit on him.
Are you OK? You wanna tell me who you really are? If you hadn't have kicked the shit out of me, I might be able to remember.
You think, just cos you're Jimmy Reardon's brother, you're protected.
Do you wanna tell me who you really are? Why don't you tell me your name? I'll show you how connected I am.
Being a fugitive is a heavy charge, Mike.
This is gonna send you back to prison for a long time.
What do I gotta do to get from under it? Tell us where your brother is and we can help you out.
Go, Jimmy! Go! Thank you.
It's been a pleasure.
- I hope we can do this again.
- I hope so too.
Thanks again.
- I'll be in touch.
- Good night.
Coming home.
Our summer place.
He's coming home.
I was just watching the tube.
They got your brother in custody.
- Charge him with anything? - No, there's no details.
I'm outside the courthouse waiting for Francine and Stella.
FBI interviewed Francine, but I think they're releasing her.
Tell them I'm OK and I'll talk to them later.
- What's the story with Mike? - He's in custody up there.
- I'm still trying to speak to him.
- Let me know when you get back home.
Morning.
Who the hell are you? What are you doing here? Lorna.
Raoul's niece, visiting for the summer.
It's OK.
I know who you are.
Is there anybody else here? Do you want breakfast? Breakfast would be good.
Thanks.
I'm sorry, man.
Raoul didn't say anything about her being here.
They're holding Mike Reardon in the cells in Cloverdale.
They ran him down on the border road about 3:00am.
I thought you had Mike under surveillance.
We did.
He slipped under it.
Any sign of the brother? It took 'em a while to figure out who Mike was, so they're just starting their search.
The FBI was chasing Reardon's cellphone south.
Turns out he must have tossed it in the back of a pickup truck.
- Did he cross into Canada? - They're assuming he's in the country.
The FBI's getting antsy.
They want to know what the brother's giving us.
- Do you want me to interview him? - Mike's not gonna give anything up.
Give 'em a call and ask 'em to hold him until we can get surveillance in place.
You were gonna find somebody to get inside the Chick A Dee.
I'm hoping I can hang some wire inside today sometime.
Still trying to figure the logistics.
- Good morning.
- Morning.
- Who are those from? - I didn't look.
Yeah, I need to speak to Ronnie Delmonico.
I've got you guys in the stadiums, the best place for these bank machines.
Now I'm getting complaints you can't keep the machines loaded.
You got two down.
You gotta keep 'em serviced.
I'm gonna take care of it.
Everything's gonna roll along, just like usual.
I hope so.
I just got a call from some woman, says she's Jimmy's good friend.
You should call her on this number from a safe phone.
She needs to talk to him.
Sorry I took you for granted, like I did.
Apology accepted.
It ain't gonna get better any time soon, with all this shit coming down, but I need you around to help me out.
Can you stay? We'll see how it works out.
Better make that call.
- This is Ron.
- You know who this is? Yeah.
What can I do for you? If you speak to him, tell him to call me.
I haven't heard anything.
If you do, tell him I can help.
I'll have to get back to you.
You have the number.
The sooner the better.
How was your dinner with the Inspector General? Very nice, thank you.
They had a change of mind regarding my qualifications for CSIS.
I've been temporarily posted to the head of the Asia-Pacific Region.
Congratulations, ma'am.
Well deserved and well earned.
And I'd like to second you to come along over with me.
Any interest? I'd I'd be honoured.
Do they know upstairs? Not yet.
I'm about to give Mr Mallaby the news.
May I watch? - Of course.
- Thank you.
Stay here as long as you like, Jim.
Great little hidy-hole.
Always has been.
Nobody ever comes this side of the island.
Except your niece.
That would've been good to know.
Here we go.
- There's more if you want.
- Thanks.
She's a good kid.
She's having problems at home with the mother, you know.
I had to go into the city to find her.
Brought her out here to get her straightened out.
She knows what's what.
If you don't want her around, I'll get rid of her.
- Better she stays until we leave.
- Your call.
Better go gas up the boat, make sure we're ready to fly.
You got it.
Things are gonna be pretty rough for a while.
We should probably get you up country.
I was thinking maybe Doug's ranch.
Pretty isolated up there.
You'd better keep an eye on Ronnie.
He's gonna have his hands full.
People will come at him hard.
They're gonna be watching that club night and day.
We'll get you settled first.
Then I'll go back help 'em out.
Right.
I apologise.
Apology doesn't cut it.
I want my money back today.
Ronnie, you're overreacting.
You're under a lot of pressure.
I understand.
Jimmy's on your mind, but you are overreacting.
You think I'm overreacting? A guy sits on 50 million of my cash, disappears off the face of the earth and you think I'm overreacting?! You sure these are the right keys? The money has been in the vault the whole time.
OK? We are on the verge of a very big deal here.
You need that offshore bank.
Let's move on.
Let's just get on with it.
Look at you.
Your goddamn nose is bleeding.
You're a mess.
You think I'm gonna trust you to do the offshore deal? Ronnie, please.
I've got to be at work in 15 minutes.
I swear, on my wife and my kids, that I will not mess this up.
I am done.
It's over.
I've had my fun.
You make one slip.
You fart at the wrong time, I'm gonna have Bob take care of you.
I swear on my wife and my kids, Ronnie.
Go.
And, when I call, you answer.
Maybe we should take you home.
I can call you, keep you posted.
Wait in the car for a few minutes while I talk to Ronnie about Dad.
I'll stay with her.
That cool, Stella? You know, your dad's gonna come out of this just fine, Stella.
I give you my word.
He's OK.
We got him tucked away.
Where is he? I wanna see him.
I don't think that's a good idea.
I think we just keep contact to a minimum until we can figure things out.
Don't tell me I can't see him.
I'm sorry.
Not now.
Not yet.
Just gotta settle things, make sure he's safe and secure.
- Just take it easy for a few days.
- Why are you being such an asshole? Do you know what I just went through? They had a gun at Stella's head.
They had a gun at my head and you're telling me to take it easy! I just wanna talk to him.
They're gonna be watching you.
They're gonna be watching everybody, looking for any sign of contact.
Be reasonable.
Why do you always try and keep us apart? That's not right.
You know it.
You think this is your opportunity to take over like you always wanted? Maybe it was you who Don't call me stupid.
You'd be shining shoes on Hastings without Jimmy.
You've been through a big thing.
Let's get something for your nerves.
You keep your mouth shut, Franky.
The DEA agent was shot in the throat and died instantly.
The second victim was shot in the back and also died on the scene.
Reardon shot them both? What sort of weapon was Reardon using? The witnesses describe a.
9mm.
And the DA? What do they use? Also.
9mm.
- Any other ballistic evidence? - Not that I'm aware of.
No chance of it being a sympathetic fire situation? Not according to the agents' statements.
They all described Reardon having pulled his gun and fired at the informant seated opposite.
Have you recovered that weapon? We have the brother in custody.
I don't know how long we can hold him, but we're not gonna get anything out of him.
I think we can safely assume he was expecting Reardon at the border and that he crossed over some time last night or today.
We've got surveillance on a few close associates and the nightclub where he and Ronnie Delmonico run the business.
What are your instincts on where he is? He owns a fleet of ships and a couple of planes, which he uses to service a network of smugglers and growers all over the southern part of the province and the Gulf Islands.
So he's probably gone to ground for a good while.
Maybe forever.
If you can make those charges stick If the charges do stick, do you predict a problem with extradition? Not from us.
The Justice Department may have some concerns.
We'll worry about that later.
What's next? The Inspector was just organising a raid on the nightclub.
We probably won't get anything, but we'll use the opportunity to plant some wire inside.
Any chance I can come along for the ride? That's up to the Inspector.
Sure.
Yeah.
Glad to have you.
Let me just find out how far along we are on that.
- Good to meet you.
- Likewise.
Thanks for your help.
Congratulations on your promotion.
- Don't expect me to kiss your ass.
- Pick a number.
I hear the Yanks offed their own man while you had him under surveillance.
Looking that way.
The search for the accused Canadian suspect James Reardon, in the drug-related homicide on the Seattle DEA agent has now turned to Canada - You'll never anyone you met us? - You can trust me.
Yeah? But I don't.
Mom! - Did you get hurt? - No.
Just scared.
Right, listen.
I don't have a lot of time to talk here, but you're probably gonna be hearing a lot of things about me, Stella, some of which are true, but I want you to know I didn't shoot anybody.
I know.
Mom needs to talk to you.
- Are you safe? - Yeah.
Yeah, I'm safe.
- Can I see you? - No, not yet.
- When? - I don't know.
I - I've got a bad feeling about Ronnie.
- Come on inside.
He's been acting real strange.
I have this feeling he had something to do with this or he knows who did.
- He's always wanted to run things.
- Don't worry.
I need you to be calm and taking care of business.
We're gonna be watched for quite a while here.
Just carry the ball.
- I will.
- OK.
I'm counting on you.
Right? Regarding my appointment here, there's no need for anybody to start leaping out the windows.
I want everybody to know I won't be making any wholesale changes.
I'm here in a probationary situation and I'm not rocking the boat.
Nobody's getting turfed out and I'm not gonna be taking over the corner office.
You can tell your analysts that their day-to-day won't change much, although I would like a daily report from the heads of each section.
So, for the time being, it's status quo.
If I didn't mention it before, my condolences regarding the death of Mr Royden.
I know you two were close.
The circumstances are being investigated as a homicide.
Am I privy to any details? At this point, no.
When I get approval from the Inspector General, you'll be infromed.
Congratulations on your promotion, Inspector.
Thank you.
Congratulations.
Will you be moving upstairs any time soon? No.
I don't need to be stuck in the middle of the analysts.
I'll be keeping my officers downstairs, until further notice.
Please feel free to visit me any time.
- How are you doing, honey? - OK.
You? What's going on? You hear anything? I got no clue.
Ronnie's upstairs.
We should be looking for some place long-term for him to go.
Bob wants him to go up north.
I'm sorry, I don't agree.
We got a big back yard here in BC.
He doesn't have to go anywhere.
He's safer here.
We don't have the death penalty.
I've got a lot of friends in Costa Rica.
If he's here, it's easier for me to stay in contact with him - than Costa Rica.
- Things have changed.
It's not the same any more.
Well, look into Costa Rica, then.
Dante's here.
Hey, Ronnie.
How are we doing? All right.
You know Phil? What do we know? Is he alive or dead? - How can I help you? - You tell me who the rat is, - so I can take care of it for you.
- Alex Morgan, out of Portland.
- Just him? - It's all we know so far.
I wouldn't advise making any moves in that direction.
Somebody's gotta take care of this.
Am I right? Disciples have concerns.
We're in business together, it affects us if you have a rat in the pipe.
I understand and it will happen at the right time.
The guy who ratted Jimmy out is being held in custody.
In custody? That makes me nervous.
How much does he know? He's limited in his dealings with us.
- You shouldn't be affected.
- They can get to him.
OK.
We'll keep you in mind.
I hear a couple of bank machines have been empty the last couple of days.
- You might wanna get on that.
- I'm on it.
Thanks for dropping by.
You tell Jimmy that I'm here if he needs something you can't provide.
Take it easy.
Good luck.
These bank machines are gonna kill me.
Mary.
I hope you don't mind.
I wanted to meet somewhere out of the limelight.
This is very nice.
How did Mr Mallaby take the news? Suitably pissed.
I spoke to Ottawa this morning, and they're delighted to have you on board.
There will be a few hoops to jump through, - but nothing serious.
- Good to hear.
Have you heard from the Americans about their demo? No, nothing.
Nothing at my end either.
Local homicide is threatening to go to the press.
Shall I intervene? I believe I can call it a matter of national security and seal the file.
I agree.
Go ahead.
Thank you.
And I also agree that government is probably riddled with American agents of various degrees.
And I think you and I should spend some time mapping a strategy to deal with it.
It's the sort of thing, Mary, that brings down governments.
So we'll have to be discreet.
You look exactly like your grandfather.
Was that before you knew who I am? Raoul tell you? I lived in Vancouver.
Everybody knows who you are.
Don't worry.
I won't tell anyone.
Your watchdog already warned me.
I talked to Doug.
He's gonna make arrangements for you to come to the ranch.
He's got two good security guys there.
We can land on the lake and he's got a chopper handy if we need it.
We fly out of here tomorrow morning.
He'll pick us up around Rupert.
That's in the middle of nowhere.
I won't be able to see my kid.
I'll go crazy in the woods there.
- It's the way it's got to be, Jim.
- Jesus Christ.
I'd be better off in prison.
I can't live like that.
I've been talking to Phil about it.
He thinks you should move to Costa Rica.
Eventually, you could even move Francine and Stella down there.
It's no place for a kid.
If you really wanna disappear, we could put a plane down in the ocean.
You get caught in bad weather, plane goes down.
Whatever you decide, we've still got to get you out of here tomorrow.
Get me a deep background on the Inspector General, yeah? - Yes, ma'am.
- That includes his marital status.
The raid is on for tonight at the club.
Thank you.
- Mr Coombs, please.
- This is Phil.
This is Inspector Spalding.
I need to speak with your client immediately.
I'll pass on that message if I can.
I need to hear his version if he expects any help from me.
I need to hear it from him firsthand.
I'll pass on the message.
We're cash poor right now, Ron.
We got a ton of dope, but we're low on cash.
Start flipping it out fast.
Give anybody with any upfront cash a real price breaker.
Are you sure you wanna do that? With Jimmy on the run, I thought we should be sitting on the weed until we find out that Morgan is the only rat in our organisation.
Did you hear what I just said? I need cash flow.
Everybody's in position.
And go! Everybody, down on the ground now! Get down on the ground now! Shut the music off.
Turn the music off.
Thank you.
We have warrants to search and seize whatever we feel like tonight.
So everybody just shut the fuck up - and stay put.
- Can I see it? I'd like to see the warrant.
Have you been in contact with Jim? When was the last time you saw or spoke to him? - That'd be a couple of days ago.
- Where was he then? Right here in the club.
You haven't spoken to him in that time? All right, take him out.
Strip search him.
Bring her in.
- What's your name? - Alison.
- What do you do here? - I'm a dancer.
- Do you know Jimmy Reardon? - We've met.
- When was the last time you saw him? - I don't know, couple a weeks ago.
Take her out.
Strip search her.
I object to the strip searches.
Your warrant is for information as to the whereabouts of James Reardon.
Maybe somebody has his number up their ass.
Maybe it's up yours.
You're Mr Reardon's attorney.
- Yeah, that's right.
- Kyle Weathers, FBI.
I spoke to you in Seattle when Mrs Reardon was released.
This is unnecessary.
This is just harassment, OK.
Nobody knows anything about where Mr Reardon is.
He hasn't been in contact with anyone.
You haven't spoken to him lately? It's client-attorney privilege.
Don't care what you spoke about, I wanna know where he is.
- No idea.
- Is that right? That's illegal too.
Drop your pants.
They just raided the Chick A Dee.
I guess it's gonna be like that for a while.
They're gonna keep coming at him, harassing Ronnie, - trying to hurt the business.
- I heard from Phil earlier.
Says he got a call from your friend in the spy services.
She wants to talk to you.
- She can help.
- What do you think? It can't hurt.
Find out what she's thinking.
Phil also says Dante came by the club.
Putting the pressure on Ronnie to deal with his rat problem.
Says Ronnie's feeling the heat.
Set me up a meeting with Ronnie.
I wanna see him before I go.
- Kind of risky.
- Gotta see him.
OK.
Night.
Good night.
Back then, it was all about the Russians, before USSR collapsed.
These days, of course, it's all about the Chinese.
Meanwhile, the Americans have managed to slide any number of people into senior ministry positions.
Not so much cloak-and-dagger types as bureaucratic collaborators.
You know, passing along policy papers.
Estimates of oil reserve, the wheat yield, economic and of course lately, water: the northwest passage and Arctic Sovereignty You make it sound rather hopeless.
- Nobody seems to care.
- Except you do.
You can call me sentimental, if you like.
But I think this country's worth saving.
What's not already gone under the auction block, of course.
There was a ring on this finger when we first met.
Yes.
It's not that I wouldn't mind a little distraction, and you're fairly distracting, but you have to know I have a very short attention span for married men.
Enjoy the hot weather now - You're leaving early in the morning.
- It's looking that way.
Chances are I'm never gonna see you again.
Apparently not.
I can keep a secret.
I can keep my mouth shut.
Yeah, you said that.
What about you? end of day two, Tiger Woods seems to be shaking off the bad game he had Hey, John, I'm gonna need some of that bank cash pronto.
I'm having some cash flow problems.
There's gonna be a problem with that.
- I've been suspended from the bank.
- What does that mean? I failed a drug test, OK? They've put me in rehab.
They've taken my keys.
Are you fucking kidding me? I'll be back in the office after a short vacation, OK? I'll drop you off at the mall.
Go down to parking level two.
My secretary will pick you up in a white Ford Mustang.
She's gonna take you to the plane.
What? What's wrong? - That banker just got sent to rehab.
- When does he go in? Now.
Today.
Right now.
- You'll do this bank meeting with me.
- What meeting? Two of the directors of the bank you're buying - are flying in for meetings next week.
- Can we time it a little better? - Jimmy's all over the news.
- They heard all about it.
Got a few concerns and wanna talk to you about it.
- Ronnie's leaving with the lawyer.
- Tag 'em and don't get burned.
Is that wire we put in last night working? We got Ronnie's office wired, but he just left.
All I'm getting is a sucking vacuum cleaner.
Listen, things are working out pretty good down here.
I took a look at the ballistics report.
The bullet that killed my agent is too damaged to identify any markings.
They haven't found the slug in the alley that killed the guy.
I'm not sure what you're trying to tell me.
Reardon goes down for the killing as long as his gun doesn't show up.
I need you to make sure that doesn't surface.
All right.
Yeah.
That's good to know.
Are you sure you wanna go to school today? - I'm gonna walk you.
- I can walk myself.
You can, but you're not.
Mrs Reardon, can we ask you a few questions? Go ahead.
I'll catch up.
I wanna talk to these guys.
- Have you heard from your husband? - You got my daughter on tape.
Give me the tape or I break the camera.
- Give me the tape.
- Give me my goddamn camera.
What's going on? Hogarty's in rehab.
I can't get to the money.
I say we ditch the machines.
We sell 'em to Dante.
We get rid of the whole business.
Let me call Dante.
I'll back him off.
You can't call Dante.
He's a disciple.
They're just waiting for the chance to take you down.
- He's just biding time.
- No, we gotta hang on.
We need to finish this deal.
Once that's done, we're in good shape.
- Unless you're ready to fold.
- I'm not folding, but this bank deal ain't done.
I got two directors coming in next week.
I know.
Let Phil take care of the bankers, all right? I need to know you're gonna hang in there.
I'm not gonna walk away from 20 years of work if you're not gonna stick.
- They'd have to drag me out of the club.
- I'm not asking for that.
I don't want you to fight, but can you handle the business? If we got rid of the bank machines, yes.
I'm gonna take care of it.
Francine's freaking out again.
Thinks I'm working behind your back.
- She'll be fine.
- Easy for you to say.
You're gonna be in Costa Rica.
She's not gonna be in your face.
Looking at the big picture, Ronnie.
This is your girl.
Are you sure you wanna take it? I could use the advice.
- Hello? - I have two very important questions.
- Did you shoot those men? - No, I never fired a shot.
It was the DEA or the FBI, whoever they were shooting everything.
This is the truth? Yeah, it was a setup.
They were trying to kill me.
Do you still have the gun you had? - Where did you get it? - Alex Morgan.
He was my distributor.
He set me up.
He gave me the gun.
I need to have that weapon and have it sent to a lab.
You'll get it today.
Give her that.
All right.
Take it easy.
Maybe I'll see you down south.
OK.
Time to go.
- May I help you? - I'm Stella's mother.
Who are you? I'm the principal.
Stella's in the office.
The FBI were here.
She's been through quite an experience.
You let the FBI interrogate my 13-year-old daughter? What the hell were you thinking? Your mother's here.
I didn't answer any of their questions.
Your informant gave him the gun.
- Were you aware of that? - Not my informant.
The DEA's informant.
This was a setup.
- What else did he say? - According to Reardon, he never fired his weapon.
I'd like the opportunity to speak to him.
He also stated that he walked in unarmed to have a conversation and receive money owed him by the informant.
The informant directed him to the washroom to retrieve a gun provided by the informant.
When he realised he was setup and tried to give himself up, he was fired upon.
He believes it was your intent to kill him.
- Not my intent.
- That's his evidence.
You're gonna have to prove it wrong if you're gonna extradite him.
How did you contact him? I don't believe you've been entirely forthright with me.
I believe you're taking Mr Reardon's word over half a dozen US witnesses.
It's gonna take other evidence to convince me your version is correct.
Such as the gun Mr Reardon is alleged to have fired.
And evidence that that was the gun used to kill the deceased.
Do you have that gun? If you have any information relating to Mr Reardon's whereabouts, such as his cellphone number, I'd like to have that.
And I'd like to know about any activities you might engage in while you're in Canada, prior to your engaging in them.
Thank you.
What the hell is this, man? What the hell happened here? Somebody threw a Molotov through the window last night.
- Who? - I think it was one of Dante's boys.
Remember that guy you threw out the club? Coming down the alley, this guy's almost ran me over.
I run up in the joint, this place is on fire, man.
I just put everything out and started cleaning up.
Look, Mike, I don't think right now you should be fighting.
Now we're in the paper every day.
That's not my problem.
I'm not leaving until you put me on the phone with him.
- He said he was gonna call you.
- Fine.
Then he can call me here.
Mike's on his way to Dante's.
One of the guys firebombed the club.
Go after him.
Stop him.
Why didn't you go to Seattle and collect the money instead of Jimmy? - Don't you usually do that? - Get off it.
- Hey, it's Ronnie.
- Hey, Ronnie boy, how are you doing? Catch any rats? One of your boys firebombed the two-bit last night.
Now Mike's on his way over to pay you a visit and he's packing.
- One of my boys? I don't think so.
- Yeah, well, Mike thinks so.
We're gonna have to make it quick.
I've got an appointment.
The crown looked at the transcript of the surveillance tape and the sequence of events.
They're very concerned about what Mr Royden is saying when he suggests it was you who outed him as a mole.
That would be called "idle speculation".
Nevertheless he's dead.
If there's reason to believe your allegations caused his death, the crown could pursue a charge of criminal negligence against you.
None of this is relevant, cos I'm ordering the case closed.
All evidence seized and then sealed.
Thank you.
We'll talk about it later.
- Shit! When did this happen? - About 20 minutes ago.
Ronnie tried to call Dante to warn him.
Mike got there, blew out his windows.
