Jeremiah (2002) s02e02 Episode Script
Letters from the Other Side: Part 2
1 Previously on Jeremiah The reason I'm here is to give you a message.
For me from God? He says you're not going to help your friend by running to him.
You have to allow yourself to be given over to those who are chasing you.
You were spying on us, keeping tabs on everything we were doing.
I was working for Jeremiah's father.
Who the hell is that and what is she doing in there? Here name is Meaghan Leigh Rose.
She's got the virus responsible for the Big Death.
She's a carrier.
It doesn't kill her, but she can spread it to anyone she touches.
What touches me dies.
You capitalize on wiping out a couple of cities to prove that you have the virus! Till we get this country back on its feet, everyone who opposes us is expendable.
I thought I was dead.
You must have had a hard life to think that this was heaven.
In exchange for Markus, Erin, Jeremiah, and his father, they'll give us the key to the Big Death virus.
In the last days of the Big Death, she received the test vaccine.
As you can see, it worked.
If we give them Devon and it turns out we can't properly analyze this woman's blood, we're back where we started.
They've asked us for four people, and who in this big wide world gets everything they ask for? Okay, okay, okay, okay.
What are you doing? Markus! Erin! Where are you taking 'em? Hey! What are you going to do with them? They were expendable.
They've always been expendable.
We're trading something we don't need for something that we do, and keeping you as insurance just in case.
There's a new world coming, Jeremiah, and in that world, you and your father won't be needed anymore.
Go back to sleep, Jeremiah, and when you wake up, everything will be different.
Everything.
It's been 15 years since a strange disease wiped out all of the adults and left us kids to fend for ourselves.
Now I'm moving ahead, through the past.
I can't let go I'm holding hope so tight It's hard to breathe when the whole world falls I'm gonna put the stars back Back up in the sky Let them all just shine down I'm gonna try I believe we'll find the world together Through your eyes That's all I can see I believe we're looking at forever In a world where we can be free I believe What I'm asking you to do is dangerous, no mistake.
The perimeter around Valhalla Sector is heavily fortified.
On top of that, even if you get through the front lines, the installation itself is almost a quarter of a mile underground, the entrance protected by tons of reinforced steel and concrete.
It's a hardened bunker capable of withstanding a 20-megaton nuclear blast, so why the hell are we even trying to take it out? I can't tell you that.
It's a suicide mission is what it is.
This is bullshit! Now, you got us to come in here because you said you knew a way to get Markus and the rest of our people out of Valhalla Sector, but all we've heard so far is a bunch of crap about a mission we can't win where a lot of us are going to get killed.
I can't tell you anything more than that.
If any of this were to get back to Valhalla Sector Oh, so now you don't trust us? Last I heard, you were the one doing the spying before you ran out with your tail between your legs.
What's important is that I heard there was at least another agent inside here, a sleeper agent who would only come into play if and when it became absolutely necessary.
Well, there's a convenient way to distract us from what you've done.
Yeah.
I mean, why should we believe anything you say? You're a traitor! Forget it.
(crowd murmuring) Okay! Here's the deal.
You all know me, and you all know exactly how I feel about Lee, so I'm the last guy to say you should trust him, so I'm not going to say it.
I think my tongue would shrivel and fall out of my mouth, and I don't think anybody in this room wants to see that So if you don't want to trust Lee, fine, don't listen to him, but I am asking you to listen to me.
Look, I know what the strategy is, I know what we're doing and I know why, and the only thing I can tell you is it's the only shot we have of getting Markus, Erin, and Jeremiah out of Valhalla Sector, and if we fail, everything you have worked to achieve That dream dies, and some good people die with it.
Any of you want to stay home, I won't hold it against you, but it is my hope that you'll all come along with us, because we have to go.
Now.
- I had it under control.
- Yeah, I can see that, and what is this this bit about a sleeper agent? You never said anything about that before.
What, you just pulled that out of your ass? It's something I heard at Valhalla Sector, that I wasn't the only one they could call on if needed.
Yeah, like the man said, it's just kind of convenient, you know? Yeah, well, it doesn't change the facts, and I still haven't decided if I want you in charge of the assault.
You're a valuable resource.
I thought you said I was an asshole.
One doesn't preclude the other.
Okay, Kurdy.
I can't speak for all of us, because some of us feel once a snake, always a snake, but as for the rest, like you said, we know you, Kurdy.
You, we trust.
We're in.
Look, I want to know that you're okay with what you have to do.
If it means getting Markus out alive, I'd do far worse.
Main thing is to make sure the situation doesn't get out of control, - the contamination doesn't spread.
- We've got it covered, but once you're inside, you're all alone.
I've been alone for a long time now.
Look, when these guys figure out what happened, Meaghan I can take care of myself.
I'm all right, Kurdy.
They think I've been cured, but there's one thing that does worry me.
Markus talked about Lee a lot, about how much he trusted him But that was before.
It's possible that he's telling the truth and he wants to slip me into Valhalla, so I can But it's also possible that we're being set up to let Valhalla deliberately take me so that they can study me, - use me as a weapon.
- I don't think so.
- But it's possible.
- Yes, it's possible.
Do me a favor? If Lee does betray me, you, Markus, and everything we've built here for a second time, do you think you could, you know, sort of kill him for me? I wondered where you were.
I was just taking care of a few things.
Are we good to go? Yeah, everything's set.
We're just waiting on you.
As for that favor, it'd be a real pleasure, Meaghan a real pleasure.
So this place we're going to hit, it's in Virginia? Yep.
But, Lee, even with relay drivers going 24 hours a day, we're talking a three, four-day drive.
The prisoner exchange happens in six hours.
How the hell are we getting halfway across the country in six hours? Hold on to your socks.
You're going to see something very few people inside the Mountain have ever seen.
Whoa.
Never forget that this was a military base, and not just a military base, but one of the most important bases in the country.
Thunder Mountain.
North American aerospace defense.
Charged with defending the nation in case of nuclear war.
Translation we've got teeth we haven't even used yet, fellows.
Markus kept these babies in working condition ever since he took over, training pilots on simulators.
Because our store of helicopter fuel is limited, as is our ability to maintain them, we've been holding these in reserve until the day we go outside, or in case of extreme emergency.
Saving them for a rainy day.
And it's raining big-time.
Ready to go to war? Attack teams are on their way.
Are the halls clear for phase two? Yeah, we're ready.
Good.
Make sure they stay clear.
Get in the truck.
Start the engine.
Don't ask questions and don't look back.
Markus, is that you? No.
It's me.
Dad? What the hell where's Markus? I don't know.
I was trying to find that out when they closed down the lab and grabbed me.
- They closed the lab? - Yeah, it was.
When they took Markus, they said they were trading him for something that they needed, and pretty soon, you and I would become expendable.
Dad? Did you hear what I said? Yeah, I heard, I heard you.
Someone's giving them the key.
Jeremiah, they've found someone who's giving them the key to the Big Death.
- How? - I don't know.
How could anyone else figure it out? No one else has the resources, the data from before the death but they wouldn't trade Markus for anything less.
Something doesn't add up here, Jeremiah.
Something something's wrong.
How's it look? So far, so good.
Doesn't seem like they know we're here yet.
Probably never had any reason to worry about it.
A place that well fortified, you've got to be out of your mind to attack it.
I guess we've got the market cornered on that one.
Come in, Kurdy.
Yeah? We just picked up somebody on the road.
All right, well, keep him quiet until we can finish this.
He says he's a friend of yours.
I don't have any friends.
Well, he says his name is Mr.
Smith, and, uh And what? And God says hello? I don't like this.
Nobody's supposed to know we're here.
Look, if he was going to warn them, he would have done it already.
So we're still going? Hell, yeah.
Mortars.
Open fire! Listen up.
Come on, let's go.
Where do you think we are? My guess is 30, 40 miles from Thunder Mountain.
It's an awful long way to come just to hide some bodies.
General Waverly! Thank you for coming.
Lee? Is she here? As soon as you send out the prisoners, they'll send her forward.
Come on, go.
Move out.
What the hell's Lee doing? I have no idea.
That's far enough.
Where's Jeremiah? Back at the base.
Insurance.
I trust you, Lee, but those people you're talking for, that's another matter altogether, now, isn't it? I'm waiting, Lee.
Meaghan! No! Don't! No.
Thank God, thank God.
It's all right.
You'll be fine.
- It's all right.
- You have no idea what it's been like.
Come on.
Let's go, Markus.
You're out of your mind! Do you have any idea what you've done? The man's a sore loser.
And a lousy poker player.
Just goes to show what you're worth.
Meaghan! Sir we're getting a transmission from the base.
They're under attack! - What? - They're under attack.
Let's go! Come on! Take off! What the hell happened back there? It was a trap.
I couldn't say anything because they said they'd shoot me if I tried, but I heard them talking.
They think they can take down Valhalla Sector.
You son of a bitch.
It's under control.
We set up the whole thing so they'll isolate the base to prevent the virus from spreading.
These are arrogant people, Lee.
They think they're fucking invincible.
But they're still human.
They won't take the chance that we could bring them down.
You can't be sure of that.
You can't be sure, and if you're wrong, God help you, Lee, because if they stop anywhere along the line, if even one of them gets out if anybody Meaghan touches walks out of Valhalla Sector, you've just signed the death warrant for the whole god damn world.
We can keep it contained to Valhalla Sector.
That was the plan.
Maybe, but even if you do, Jeremiah is still inside.
Go! Go! I know you don't believe me, but I have to get in there.
I have to find Kurdy.
Till we know whether or not you're that sleeper agent we heard about, you're not going anywhere.
Why is it so important for you to find Kurdy, anyway? Because if I don't, he'll die.
Oh yeah? Says who? God.
God? Don't believe in him.
Neither did I, but I don't think he noticed.
I don't get it.
Why would they turn you over if they were going to attack us? Because they were sure they could get me back again before you could analyze my blood to find the vaccine.
They wanted to divert your attention, and I was the only bait you would go for.
What's the point? Valhalla Sector is built to stand up to a nuclear attack.
I know, but I heard them talking when they thought I was asleep.
They have people inside your operation.
Once they link up and open the front door, game over.
Sir? We've got the base.
Good.
No sense in taking chances.
Tell our people on the ground to prepare for a Code Red shutdown.
The troops are to pull back and get inside the moment we touch down.
Yes, sir.
What's a Code Red shutdown? The people who designed Valhalla Sector made it impervious to any kind of biological, chemical, or nuclear attack, and to human weakness.
Valhalla Sector has a failsafe code.
Once you put in the amount of time you want to shut down, the system can't be changed one day, two days, one year, five years once those 10-ton doors shut down, no power on heaven or earth can open them until the timers go off.
We'll set the timers for five days just as a precaution.
That should give us enough time to get the information we need to deal with this situation.
As I said, you're safe now.
- Where the hell is it? - What? My sat-phone.
I liberated it from Markus' office.
You mean you stole it.
You took it from me, I took it back.
Who are you calling? Jeremiah's father.
I just hope he kept the phone turned on even after my position got compromised.
I couldn't risk calling before we pulled this off in case the call got intercepted, but now we have to chance it.
(phone ringing) Hello? Libby? Is that you? - Lee? - Where's Devon? They stuck him in the cell next to Jeremiah.
What's going on? Don't talk.
Just listen.
There's been a problem.
Sulfur Okay, I've waited as long as I can, but God says I have to go now.
Yeah, well, I've got the gun, and I say you stay put.
What does your God say to that? He says duck.
Told you.
Here they come.
Why didn't our choppers shoot it down? We want it to land safely, get the package inside.
The main thing is to get them to seal off the base.
That's what all this is about? You want them to seal off the place? We don't want to give these guys any time to think.
That's why we hit them when we did instead of waiting till they got here.
We wanted to make sure they wouldn't make any stops along the way.
They had to come back here on the run for the plan to work.
Which is? The Big Death's coming to Valhalla.
(screaming) Get down! What the hell are you doing? It's okay.
Don't worry about it.
God says God says No! Thanks for finally letting me in on the secret, Kurdy.
I appreciate it.
You know, for once, you've actually made my job easier.
You're the sleeper agent.
It's just a job, Kurdy.
Nothing personal.
Bye.
(gunshots) God says you're not going to die at least not tonight.
Libby Hey.
I brought snacks.
I know how you are when your blood sugar drops.
Um, so don't eat them all at once.
You know, spread them out, 'cause otherwise, there's that whole sugar-crash thing So make these last, okay, 'cause who knows, it might be a while before anyone can get back here.
Yeah, um Libby, are you okay? Oh, yeah, yeah.
I'm great as anyone can be under the circumstances.
Whoa! Shit! - Anything else? - No, that should be it.
Thanks.
Hey, Libby, you forgot your cooler.
Anything? Nothing.
The system's down at their end.
So we don't know anything about what's happened or what's happening.
We don't know if their chopper went down and they had to hitch-hike into a populated area.
We don't know if they sealed off the base or whether they've got people walking around the outside world spreading this thing Do we have any working helicopters still at the base? Yes.
Fire them up.
We're going to Valhalla Sector.
We'll park the choppers half a mile outside, and make sure the place is sealed off.
If it isn't, if those doors are open, if we even see one person walking out of there who might be contaminated, we take them out.
I'm ahead of you.
Kurdy's there.
He knows what to do.
There's no reason for you to I don't care.
I'm going.
I'm not going to believe that we've contained this thing until I see it with my own eyes.
Markus I know you don't agree with my decision, but it was the only way to take out Valhalla Sector.
- It was worth the risk.
- Nothing was worth the risk.
Nothing.
Not me, not you, not Jeremiah, not his dad.
Nothing.
No one.
So how long do we have? The Big Death spreads by touch and moves like wildfire.
It starts with nausea, dizziness, vomiting, lesions, and bruising around the joints Then madness, dementia, blindness, the internal organs liquefy, and then death.
Total time involved two to three days.
So Jeremiah, Devon, and Libby if they get the message, they have to stay alive and untouched while the world dies around them.
They get to see the Big Death happening all over again.
I can't imagine.
I just can't imagine (moans) Jeremiah, are you okay? How long have I been out? Almost a day.
Thank God.
I thought you were dead.
(distant shouting and screaming) Is is it Yeah.
It's started.
Can't you hear it? (moaning and shrieking) (moaning and screaming) (door opening) Dad? Devon Devon, you son of a bitch Where are you? You thought you could hide, huh? But I had my people, my people, digging, and even when they couldn't see any longer, and then they ran off, I don't give up, ever! Dad! Where are you, you I almost had you that time.
Huh.
Hey, Jeremiah, come on.
Shake my hand.
It's the polite thing to do.
Didn't your daddy ever teach you how to be polite? Come on, you son of a bitch.
Where are you? You don't understand.
We were going to run run it all, Kings and queens of the new world.
For the first time, no one could fight us.
Nobody could stop us.
We'd won.
Don't you see? A lot of people died but we won.
We won Dad? I'm good.
I'm good.
(footsteps approaching) Hello.
You must be Jeremiah.
I made I made quite a mess out there.
You really should see it.
They're all dead.
I'm sorry.
Are you afraid of me, Jeremiah? No, I'm not.
I'm afraid of me.
I'm so afraid of me.
I'm scaring me to death.
I'm tired.
I'm so tired.
Can I go home now? Yeah.
You can go home now.
Good.
Thank you.
Goodbye.
This is my blood.
I've been waiting 15 years to give this to someone who would know what to do with it.
I'm done now.
Goodbye.
Keep a lookout for anybody who might have gotten out, but don't fire until I give the word.
Tell me everything.
Leave nothing out.
- Libby! - Thank God.
- Put these on.
The time-locks on the main doors are open.
There's a lot of, um, stuff between here and the door.
You don't want to slip and fall on anyone.
I mean, anything.
Stay where you are.
They might not be able to hear you in those suits.
Jeremiah! Stay where you are, all of you! No marks.
They don't look like they've been infected.
I'm going down.
Hang on, Kurdy.
Hang on.
We don't know if they're clean.
The virus might not have taken yet.
Jeremiah, are you infected? Are any of you infected? No.
Okay, just to be sure, we've set up a containment area a hundred yards down that road.
We'll keep you under observation for 24 hours, to make sure you're clean.
Jeremiah, do you know where Meaghan is? Markus we've got a report of someone moving away from the area.
Female.
Meaghan! Meaghan.
Hi.
Hi.
Pretty day, isn't it? It's a really pretty day.
Why don't you come on down here? I got a very good view from here, too.
Do you know what I am, Markus? Beside beautiful? I'm a bad memory of a bad time.
I don't belong here.
This is your time now, you and the rest.
What I have inside me, it has no place in the world you're trying to build.
Maybe it doesn't, but you do.
We're a package deal, Markus.
Meaghan You promised me that I would feel the wind in my hair and the sun on my face.
I've done that.
You kept your promise.
What more can anyone ask for? I'm going to go for a walk now, Markus because it's a beautiful day and I hate to waste it.
- Don't do this.
- It's all right, Markus.
I love you.
I love you so much.
And I love you.
That's why I have to do this.
See you soon, Markus.
Meaghan! Meaghan! Meaghan! Good.
So I heard you got a clean bill of health.
Yeah.
Finally.
I tell you, there isn't a piece of me that hasn't been poked or prodded, taken some kind of sample.
It's good to see you, man.
Elizabeth's dead.
Yeah, i I heard that, and I'm sorry.
Is there anything I can do? Dead's dead.
Not much of anything anybody can do about it.
Yeah.
Listen, uh, what you said, man, about us not being partners anymore Not now, Jeremiah, all right? Not now.
Later's good.
So where's Markus? You all right? No But I will be, eventually.
It's just going to hurt like hell for a while.
She was right.
With Valhalla Sector down and the Big Death gone, it's It's like a new day.
We can start to move on, start building, look forward instead of looking backward.
We've got to get going, Markus.
We've got a lot of work to do.
Right.
We still have to find out where they stashed Theo and the rest of the guys from the meeting in St.
Louis.
And building that better day, that is going to require all of your attention, Markus, all your focus.
You won't Won't have time to think about it.
I don't think you want to anyway.
No.
Not for a while.
Good night.

Good night.
