Mission: Impossible (1988) s02e02 Episode Script

The Golden Serpent (2)

MALE VOICE: The Golden Serpent is a notorious Southeast Asian Triad that uses the revenue from its worldwide drug-smuggling operations to gain control over Third World nations.
Your mission, Jim, is to bring the prince and the leader of the Golden Serpent to justice and to obtain details of their international distribution network.
The Golden Serpent ring may be the key to that information.
Prince Selimun of Benarli.
Wasn't he one of a set of twins? Yes.
His brother was born just three minutes ahead of him, thereby becoming the heir to the throne.
They went swimming in a river and the older brother was drowned.
Selimun was suspected of being responsible, but it was all hushed up.
Selimun lives with the fear today that his brother will come back and take revenge and try to claim his rightful throne.
How do we go after this guy? Make the prince think the Golden Serpent is trying to get rid of him and we make the Golden Serpent think the prince has gone into business for himself.
We do have one ace up our sleeve.
The undercover agent who's penetrated the prince's operation.
Looks like another family affair.
You are suggesting someone's going to murder me.
Let's just say that your brother is involved.
My brother is dead.
GRANT: His Highness Prince Selimun.
Or his long-Iost twin brother.
I think our friend Collier may be a spy.
Will he go mad, or simply die? It's impossible to tell, Highness.
There's an underwater passage leading into the grotto.
But it's blocked off by a steel grill.
-Dad'll take care of the grill.
-I hope so.
If we don't make the switch now, GRANT: The darts are a crystallized version of the gas we use in our knock-out cans.
It causes unconsciousness and a total loss of memory for 24 hours.
-[ silenced gunshot .]
-Dad! Dad, we're going to get you out of here.
The heroin make the switch.
They'll never know we made the switch.
I'd like to be there when the prince's employer tests his new consignment.
The shipment will be ready by morning.
Your money will be paid in the usual way.
If they catch us here, the mission's blown.
To hell with the mission! The job took his life.
That's the job he had to do.
The prince wants to see you.
The prince's heavy just grabbed Shannon.
Good.
It's working.
You'll be one of a number of women aboard my yacht.
Tell me what you know.
Has the shipment come onboard? -It's being loaded now.
-What are you doing? -How are you holding up? - I wish Max wasn't firing blanks.
[ beeps .]
He's on the bridge! Baal, he's on the bridge.
Max, you've got trouble headed your way.
[ screaming .]
[ cries out .]
[ chuckling .]
[ screaming .]
[ yelling .]
[ gasping .]
Buddy, you all right? Man, that was some fall up there.
Yeah.
The last step was a doozy.
You're hurt! I better bind that up.
[ gunfire .]
Hang on.
Go! What's happening? Where are you taking me? To the yacht.
[ gunfire .]
[ shouting .]
[ gunfire .]
[ gunfire .]
[ screaming .]
Your Highness.
-Streicher! -[ guns cocking .]
No, no, no, I wouldn't do that.
Not with all these people around.
And certainly not until you've had your family reunion.
-My God! -Jehani! Remember me, Selimun? We should go swimming again sometime.
What do you want? I want what is mine.
The throne of our country.
Unfortunately, the sniper was not quite the marksman he claimed.
You were behind that? You tried to kill me? It seems the Golden Serpent no longer trusts you, Selimun.
You were to die I was to replace you.
You could never be a party to murder.
I'll kill anyone who stands between me and my throne.
Including you, my dear.
Selimun, wait for me! No point in running, brother.
The reach of the Golden Serpent is long.
DRAGO: Nobody threatens me, Harris.
You tell El Presidente that I funneled $6 million to him over the past year and I expect our supplies to continue.
Otherwise, you might have to find another El Presidente.
When does the shipment from Selimun arrive? The yacht's in the harbor now.
We could arrange a transfer tonight.
We'll go through the usual wholesalers, less 15% for cash.
That's a hell of a lot of profit, sir.
I mean, we could take the next few weeks We haven't got weeks.
I need liquidity.
Right you are, sir.
Yes.
I'll have to find you a more satisfying target.
I'd like that.
[ indistinct voices .]
They tried to kill you once.
Keep the heroin, Highness.
Run from them.
They'd only track me down.
There'd be no hiding place.
If I deliver the heroin, it will show that I am still loyal to them.
Do they need you? If your brother takes over the throne, he'll have diplomatic immunity.
He'll inherit the distribution networks, the poppy fields My brother is dead! How can he come back from the dead, Captain? I held him under.
He kicked and he thrashed, but I held him under until he stopped.
And then I watched his body drift away downriver.
This is my last delivery.
Tomorrow, we return to Benarli, where I'll be safe among my people.
These guys work long hours.
Money must be good.
Time to follow them.
Straight to the Golden Serpent.
This is almost too easy.
Here they are.
[ engine starting .]
Look at that.
[ tires squealing .]
-GRANT: They're all the same.
-With the same number plates.
What the hell's going on? About it being too easy Did I say that? Vitamin C, damn it! Vitamin C! I want every bottle checked, do you understand? Yes, sir.
I don't know how Selimun thought he was going to get away with this.
But he'll pay for it one way or another.
[ phone beeping .]
Selimun.
Shannon's bug is working.
-[ electronic squealing .]
-He's scrambling.
Going somewhere, Selimun? Why are you doing this to me? It doesn't pay to play games with me, my friend.
You talk of games! You bring my brother back to haunt me.
And this man Cortez and his banker, all involved in your plot to kill me.
I don't know what you're talking about, Selimun, but your fairy tales won't save you.
No one crosses me.
Why would I cross you? You could liquidate me as easily as any of your other investments.
I might just do that.
[ garbled voices .]
Do you think you can get anything from it, Grant? If I can unscramble the original.
You're the big tycoon here, my friend, but back in Benarli, you can't touch me.
Very well, then, Your Highness, if that's the way you want to play it.
Let me just say bon voyage.
[ rewinding .]
GRANT: We already have Selimun's voice analysis in the IMF files, so I can unscramble and isolate it.
[ garbled voices .]
[ voices become less garbled .]
SELIMUN: You're the big tycoon here, my friend.
You're the big tycoon here, my friend.
You're the big tycoon here, my friend.
You're the big tycoon here, my friend.
Now I can get a clear voiceprint of the other guy.
And trace it through IM research.
You got it.
If the man has ever made a recorded speech, a personal appearance He's a politician, a prominent businessman.
Anyone who's in the IM files, I can trace this guy.
Selimun referred to him as a tycoon.
Yeah.
Give me an hour or two.
I think I can give you the identity of the Golden Serpent.
All right.
Then I think it's time the Prince and I did some banking.
Right.
Mask time.
Yeah.
[ whirring, hissing .]
Every dollar, bond, share, certificate, everything.
Your Highness, this is humiliating to bring this man here, an opponent.
I don't think you understand, Mr.
Harris.
His Highness simply wishes to transfer his accounts from your bank to my bank now.
I can't just turn over my biggest client, not without referring it to my superiors.
Well, now, tell me, just whose permission does His Highness need to transfer his own money? You're asking me to exceed my authority, Mr.
Streicher.
No, we're not asking you anything.
His Highness is giving you an instruction.
NICHOLAS: Surely, it's simple enough.
An entry or two on your computer it's done.
Your Highness, think of where your money comes from.
Think of the risk you're taking.
Just do it, Harris! Now! Ah, if one could but live forever.
[ .]
DRAGO [ sped up .]
: I don't know what you're talking about, Selimun.
Got it! Conrad Drago, age 47.
Businessman, investor, banker.
And drug dealer.
GRANT: No previous convictions or indictments.
Unmarried, current domicile Sydney, Australia.
Reputation as a ruthless, sometimes reckless businessman with connections throughout the world.
Rumors abound that his financial base is built on shaky ground.
And shores it up with international drug-running.
That's our man.
Conrad Drago is the head of the Golden Serpent.
Now, you were able to tap into Harris' computer.
Yeah.
It's all right here in the Consul National Bank of Zurich.
Oh, look at this.
It's even given us the number of the account that pays the Prince a million dollars a month.
Payment from the Golden Serpent.
Direct from Drago's personal account.
Well, I guess that just about wraps it up.
All right, Grant, we want to do a little creative accounting.
We want Mr.
Drago to think the prince has been robbing him blind.
-Can do? -Can do.
Mr.
Drago used to be a wealthy man.
So, Harris your phone call upset me terribly.
I'd like a proper explanation.
Well, I, I just can't understand it, Mr.
Drago.
At the Prince's insistence, I had his funds shifted and then when I came to make the usual monthly payment to the prince, I found these huge amounts transferred from your account to his.
[ chuckles .]
That's not good enough, Harris.
You're supposed to be my banker.
Why didn't you know this was going on? L-I assure you everything was in order when I examined your accounts last week.
How long has he been doing this? I don't know.
Our computers well, we just can't get the information we need.
So, what's the bottom line? Well, it seems that Mr.
Drago's personal fortune has been almost liquidated.
While Selimun's has been growing by the same amount.
And the businesses? Mr.
Drago's companies? Perhaps with a large injection of cash, we could save some of them, if you act fast.
Tell me, Harris, why do you think I've been paying you to launder our money all these years? Didn't you assure me that your creative financing was infallible? I see.
Burrows, would you see Mr.
Harris to his car? Have one of the men drive him.
That won't be necessary, I assure you.
I think I know what's best.
See to it, Burrows.
That ought to be a short drive.
Do it now.
[ ship's horn blows .]
[ whirring .]
[ .]
We'll just increase the density and exaggerate the color contrast.
Like that.
[ chuckles .]
That reminds me of Aladdin's cave.
Yeah, that's exactly what it's supposed to do.
Well, this would have convinced me.
I sure hope so.
That one's real.
[ Max chuckles .]
You know what they say, Captain? Live fast die young.
[ dart thuds, groans .]
And leave a good-Iooking corpse.
Forget Benarli.
We're going to the island.
Give your orders, then come to my cabin.
[ man breathing heavily .]
Who's there? Do you need help? Barney? [ groans softly .]
Barney Collier.
Barney?! What happened? [ faintly .]
: Shannon they've kept me alive just barely.
I convinced the prince that I was a paid supplier for the Golden Serpent.
He wanted names, and I couldn't give him any.
Can you let Grant know I'm alive? I can't get in touch with him.
And I can't risk blowing my cover.
I understand.
Go.
Look, I'll be back later.
You get some rest.
[ door opens and closes .]
A lapel pin? GRANT: Actually, it's a miniature camera -and transmitter.
-NICHOLAS: You're kidding.
Stand over there.
A little turn, huh? PHELPS: Grant, you've done it again.
GRANT: Well, good things come in small packages.
It's ringing.
DRAGO: Yes? Mr.
Drago, this is Cortez.
Nicholas Cortez.
Obviously, you've heard of me.
Yes, I've heard of you.
What do you want? No, it's something you want.
Something I bought from your friend, the prince.
If you're talking about what I think you are, Cortez, you've made a very serious error in judgment.
Well, obviously, you're interested.
Now, I'm going to put you on to my banker.
He also deals with the prince.
His name is Streicher.
I think Mr.
Drago's a little upset.
Mr.
Drago You're a fool, Streicher.
[ chuckles .]
I think you should be grateful to us.
We're gonna let you have the shipment back.
What's the catch, Streicher? There's no catch.
It'll cost you five million U.
S.
Dollars, but that's only a small percentage of the street value.
Nobody's that generous.
There has to be an angle.
Well, try not to be a skeptic, Mr.
Drago.
Are you interested or not? I'm interested.
Good.
Here's what you have to do [ .]
Cortez? And you'd be Burrows.
Do you have the money? The shipment? It's in the back.
I'll see the heroin.
When I see the money.
Well, I'm satisfied.
Then we have a deal.
Keep the hearse.
You guys use them more than us.
-[ gun cocking .]
-Burrows! Tell Drago to keep his money.
The heroin's a gift.
[ beep .]
Jim, Burrows accepted our gift.
The heroin and the money.
Good, Nicholas.
Max and Grant will be flying to the Barrier Reef tonight.
You've got a new protector now.
His name's Drago.
And you'll find he can be just as generous as the prince.
He can also be a damn sight tougher.
So, ladies, I suggest you don't do anything to upset him.
What happened to Selimun? Forget Selimun.
There's a secluded beach about a mile past the headland.
I'll hide the Zodiac there.
Good hunting.
I'm Drago.
Streicher.
Cortez.
You're the first banker I've met who gave me my money back.
A gesture of good faith.
To achieve what? Mr.
Cortez and I are going to buy your operation.
[ chuckles .]
Good-bye, gentlemen.
Without us, you lose everything.
Why not sell while you can? Just what makes you two think that you can buy my organization for a miserable $5 million? $5 million, and a shipment of heroin.
Like hell.
That shipment was mine to start with.
So were your business operations.
Yes, and all that money you put away so carefully in the Swiss account.
But they're not yours anymore.
Not since the prince got his hands on them.
In fact, what we're buying is really 100% of very nearly nothing.
Then why do you want them? Because you've got growers, processors, wholesalers, street dealers.
A complete organization.
And that's what we're after, your distribution network.
Think about it, Drago.
That sound you hear is your empire crashing down around you.
You have to deal with us.
Where would you get the sort of money that I'd want? From Prince Selimun.
Selimun's dead.
He's dead, and he's gone.
Yes, but his gold is not gone.
All the times he ripped you off and everyone else he ever dealt with all converted to good old-fashioned bullion.
And we know exactly where it is.
Give me one reason why I should believe you.
'Cause you can't afford not to.
-I'm warning you, Streicher -Now, don't threaten me, Drago.
Do we deal, or do I walk out now? We deal.
[ groans .]
[ spray hissing .]
[ .]
[ .]
Max, open up.
[ beeping .]
Hey, buddy, I've got a bit of a surprise for you.
There's someone here who wants to talk to you.
Hello, son.
Dad?! All right, let's get down to business.
I want your table of organization.
I want the dates of all scheduled shipments.
I want the locations of the poppy growing areas and the processing plants for the heroin.
I want your lines of distribution.
You expect me to hand over the business before I've even seen the gold.
Nobody threatens me.
We also want the names of every grower, dealer, courier and distributor in your network.
Our network.
It's not your network, Cortez.
Not until I have the gold.
The gold is there.
It's hidden in the receiving dock.
Don't lie to me.
I've been in that grotto a thousand times.
Well, then the prince really put one over on you, didn't he? The gold is here.
So are my records.
Hey, buddy? Ever see one of these before? [ silenced shot, groans .]
[ grunts .]
[ silenced shot, groans .]
Okay.
Okay, let's get to work.
You realize, of course, if you are foolish enough to double-cross me, the guards would shoot you before you got out of the grounds.
Drago's on his way, Barney.
[ whirring, clanging .]
We've got to slow him down.
I'll take care of it.
You have a cynical, suspicious mind, Drago.
Yes, haven't I? -What are you doing down there? -Who the hell's she? Please one question at a time.
Let me introduce one of my assistants, Miss Purcell.
Your assistant? Yes, she became a very close friend of the late lamented prince.
-On our instructions.
-I don't like this, Drago.
I'm not sure I'm very happy about it myself.
Somebody better explain.
Now! You all right? I'm fine, son.
But you better get outta here.
[ elevator whirs .]
Shannon hasn't been able to hold him.
Give me 20 seconds.
Then close it.
You got it.
We simply assumed that Prince Selimun ran the whole operation, but then Miss Purcell found out he was really just a part of your network, and not only that, he was robbing you blind.
So it was Harris, the bank manager, who led us to you.
And if you still want to do business, Drago.
I suggest you tell your little friend here to point that thing somewhere else.
[ whirring .]
Well, show me.
The prince said something about the key to the gold being the eye of the serpent.
PHELPS: I feel something here, kind of recessed.
It could be a it could be a lock.
That's it.
And he said that you had to use a ring to open it.
A ring? What sort of a ring? Well, the prince had a ring just like that one.
Maybe it's the key.
Maybe.
Well, we'll use the prince's ring.
Well, I don't see any gold.
Mr.
Drago.
[ beeps .]
[ mechanical hum .]
[ whirring .]
Get in there.
Bring me an ingot.
What? Like this? Just get it.
[ .]
[ panting .]
All right.
You've got the gold.
Now it's your turn.
Cortez, you just made yourself a deal.
[ click .]
[ whirring .]
The information you wanted.
Lines of supply growing areas costs wholesale and on-the-street sale.
DRAGO: These maps show the location of our cocaine and heroin processing plants, smuggled goods and the main contacts in our cities throughout the U.
S principal dealers and growers.
Well, that's it.
I hope you enjoyed the show.
Since you've been kind enough to show me the location of the gold, I don't see any reason why I shouldn't keep both the gold and the organization! BARNEY: Jim! Look out! [ groans .]
[ gasping .]
[ grunting and groaning .]
[ gasping .]
[ gasps .]
[ groans .]
-Watch out! -[ dart fires .]
[ zapping .]
[ screaming .]
[ screaming .]
[ zapping stops .]
[ explosions .]
This whole place is going to go up! [ .]
[ explosive rumbling .]
[ explosive rumbling .]
[ panicked clamoring .]
[ explosions in distance .]
[ .]
[ .]
[ groans .]
PHELPS: Hiya, Barney.
Hi, Jim.
Thank you.
You saved my life.
If I'm not mistaken, you're still two up on me.
[ laughs .]
Who's counting? We got it.
The whole rotten setup.
The Golden Serpent has lost its sting.
[ theme music playing .]
