Mission to Burnley (2023) s02e02 Episode Script
A Need To Believe
1
This programme contains very strong
language from the outset and
throughout.
BELLAMY: Sky TV.
(ALL CHATTER, GROAN)
MAN: Yes, Bellers.
(ALL GROAN)
Yes, good.
(OVERLAPPING CHATTER)
Oh, come on, no!
PLAYER: That was a shit one.
Unlucky.
PLAYER 2: Got a few
more efforts to go.
(ALL LAUGH)
Punish him.
(LAUGHTER)
(OVERLAPPING CHATTER)
He really can't afford to miss this.
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
Come on!
(ALL GROAN, LAUGH)
Fucking haters.
# JOHNNY CASH:
God's Gonna Cut You Down #
# I've been down on bended knee
# Talking to the Man from Galilee
# He spoke to me
In the voice so sweet
# I thought I heard
the shuffle of angels' feet
# He called my name
And my heart stood still
# When he said,
"John, go do my will!"
# Tell 'em
That God's gonna cut you down
# Tell 'em
That God's gonna cut you down #
(ATMOSPHERIC MUSIC)
(BIRDS TWITTERING)
PUNDIT: (VO) "Fan reaction, then.
Luton Town 1- 2 Burnley.
Burnley get their first win
of the season."
BURNLEY FAN:
We won a game of football.
You know that feeling right there
in the middle of your chest?
That's relief.
We actually had Foster to put
the ball in the back of the net.
Honestly, that bloke is an absolute
essential in this team.
I'm sorry, guys,
but Burnley, one away win,
no home wins - that's a concern.
Pressure's gonna build.
PACE: So, let me out.
I wanna I'm
I'm gonna lead in
and start the conversation.
"We've gone to having
a more regular strategy discussion
within the club,
trying to combine
both the footballing side
and the business side,
and helping people understand
what is the focus
of all of our efforts.
And everyone's role needs
to feel like it has an impact."
Thank you for joining us.
So, football-centricity.
What does it mean to you?
Being football-centric
..it's something I've discussed
with Alan from day one.
And I said that my experience
in many football clubs is
that clubs are organised
in various segments,
but it's not really aligned.
Is everyone playing a part
in making sure the team performs,
that 1%, that edge,
that 0.5%, even, if it needs to be?
I think especially
for a club like us,
where we don't have the means
of other clubs in the league,
we're competing against teams earning
what, £400, £500 million a year?
We're a quarter of that size.
Obviously, there's lots of things
in the background
that will hopefully make
the fan experience, which is
my responsibility, better.
What can we do to make
to give it that little bit of extra?
Um Our own home advantage,
for example,
you know, have we thought
about the type of song
that we play
before we go onto the pitch?
Not because it's good for the fans;
for performance.
Have we thought about it,
like,
what it actually does
to either impress the opponent,
or or make our team stronger?
How do we increase
this territoriality feeling?
Because home advantage is
so present in football.
It's not a myth.
It's It's real, home advantage.
How do you How do you weaponise
these people to help you win games?
(LAUGHTER)
It's
Nothing wrong with this. Just keep
it simple, right? How do you
How do you weaponise these people
to help us overcome £10, £20,
£30 million pounds in shortfall,
in terms of pound-for-pound quality?
But it's something we have to think
about, if you look at Turf Moor,
first and foremost, as a place
for us to go and win points.
That's the key for me, yeah.
We have to understand that this is
the best place for us to win points.
And winning points, as we've seen,
versus losing points,
it has quite a different effect
on all our lives.
(ENERGETIC MUSIC)
(CROWD CHANTING)
PUNDIT: "Good afternoon
and a warm welcome to Turf Moor
for Burnley's home game
against Chelsea."
Hi, how are you guys?
You alright?
Nervous.
(CHUCKLES)
"I think it's going the way
that we expected it to go.
I think we hoped that we would
somehow see
something magically different
about bringing a whole bunch
of new players.
But the level of competition
(NERVOUS MUSIC)
..it's huge.
All good, all good. How are you?
Emotionally, I the you know
when I stay off of social media,
I'm fine.
But we're feeling like
we would really like not
to be in that relegation zone.
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
Burnley won at Luton
on Tuesday night.
FAN: That was a very, very important
game. We're hoping that, today,
that that same confidence is
displayed here at Turf Moor
with the crowd behind us.
CROWD: (CHANTING)
Burnley! Burnley! Burnley!
(TENSE MUSIC)
ANNOUNCER: Welcome number 17,
Lyle Foster.
Top-scorer Lyle Foster
already three goals for him.
CROWD: (CHANTING)
Chelsea! Chelsea! Chelsea! Chelsea!
Burnley! Burnley! Burnley! Burnley!
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
(DRAMATIC, TENSE MUSIC)
COMMENTATOR: Here's Foster,
taking the game to Chelsea,
trying to find a way through.
Odobert hits it, and scores!
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
What a moment for him.
What a start for Burnley.
Maybe it's all starting
to come together
for the Clarets
in the Premier League.
(DRAMATIC, CHILLING MUSIC)
Finds a way through, and it's in.
Disaster for Burnley.
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
(CROWD GROANS) (WHISTLE BLOWS)
And a penalty kick is given.
(DEEP, UNSETTLING MUSIC)
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
A big moment,
and a game-changing moment
for Burnley and Chelsea.
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
PACE: People are
in a delusional state
if they think that,
by leaving at 60,
70 minutes into a game, they're
gonna play harder for me next week.
We have an obligation, that
when things aren't going our way,
to actually be more supportive,
not less supportive,
even when they fail a million times.
CROWD: (CHANTING) You're not singing,
you're not singing anymore.
You're not singing anymore.
You're not singing,
you're not singing,
you're not singing anymore.
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
The Burnley bubble bursts after
their midweek victory over Luton.
Burnley 1 - 4 Chelsea.
(CROWD BOOING)
There's no hiding from the fact
that we've lost our first five
at home in the Premier League.
HUNT: So I'd like to start out today
with the match day reporting.
The atmosphere in the stadium,
we've had several comments
to Alan and the directors.
Like, it was just it felt flat.
There were times in the stadium
it just felt flat.
We need that entertainment
back into the bowl.
We've got countdown to kick-off
Yeahwhen players come out.
They do the handshake,
they do the Premier League music,
then it goes flat.
It's all about the music line-up.
Get Eight Mile by Eminem going,
and get Guns 'n' Roses going,
get whatever it is
that's hyping people up nowadays,
so that we can build up
to that kick-off, right?
We're gonna have drums, OK?
So just get get ready for it.
We're gonna have drums.
I think for those of you
that saw Alan's email,
this is not a negotiable position.
There will be a drum
at the next game.
Is this Is this fan-led again?
Is this someone
we've paid to come in?
MAN: We should have fans
that are, like,
willing to do it
because they want it to happen.
This is not real skilled
percussionists, right?
This is like,
"I can boom, boom, boom," right?
From a British perspective,
like, I do think
there is something in that, you
know, not being too afraid of it.
I do think we should try
and push it a little bit.
The New York Ice Hockey Rangers,
they got some guy
that beats on his head
during half time, right?
He's, like, the slap guy.
(LAUGHTER)
It's these crazy guys
that actually do stuff, right?
We need to make sure if we execute
this, we execute it well, though.
MAN: Absolutely. It's gotta be
Bob on.
Just make sure A: we've got
the right person to bang it, and
what they're banging is effective.
Some of the players
have come to me
and suggested
that the atmosphere is poor.
If you leave at 60 minutes,
and we still have 30 minutes
to play, we've got to do something,
and we can't just turn on AC/DC
and crank it up.
The fanbase does not understand
the impact that they have on a team.
We need to change the atmosphere,
and drum is a way.
(TENSE, THROBBING MUSIC)
(BIRDS CHATTERING)
(DISTANT CHATTERING, SHOUTING)
KOMPANY: Reet, press hard,
kick the ball in.
(WHISTLE BLOWS) Let's go.
PLAYER: What's he doing?
Bring somebody out.
Don't go round the box.
Don't hold the same line.
BELLAMY: We knew it was gonna be
tough. We knew what it was gonna be.
Um We would have expected
to be better.
(OVERLAPPING SHOUTING)
(FAINT APPLAUSE)
I feel we're better than the points
we've consumed so far
..um but this league is
it's a very unforgiving league.
Lads,
you can't go to the goalkeeper.
We fall on the fucking back line.
Fucking jump.
We're never gonna start as being
the best,
but we can get there.
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
Easy, boys. Wait for your moment.
You can't say, "I want confidence,"
you can't say, "I want results."
You have to live in a certain way
to achieve results.
Gotta be hard.
You're not gonna get the ball
by asking nicely.
And then, it's about controlling:
controlling your emotions.
It's being on that fine limit
of being passionate and driven
but never reckless.
And again, boys. Last time.
People who behave in that way
become winners.
Do not fucking test me.
Do not fucking test me.
Enough.
Enough of the fucking moaning.
Enough with the fucking moaning.
Play fucking football.
What gives you the fucking right to
moan about everything? Fucking play!
How many times do I have to tell you?
Stop fucking moaning.
(OVERLAPPING CHATTER)
What? Have you got something
you wanna communicate to the team?
You wanna communicate something,
you big boy?
You're a big boy. You wanna talk?
What you talking about?
It wasn't against you. I just said
"Can we finish that task?"
No, you're moaning about everything.
What have I moaned about today?
Body language.
Body language is fucking shit.
I'm not accepting it. Behave.
Fucking hell, man.
It's fucking life or death!
Fucking play!
We know that. I fucking know that.
Fuckin' hell!
I've had e-fucking-nough of this.
Just two more before you go in.
(SIGHS)
Yeah, yeah. (CHUCKLES)
REPORTER: We've got to that stage
in the season
where everybody I think accepted
that your opening fixtures were
very difficult.
How pressurised are
these games gonna come now?
You've got Brentford
and Bournemouth away.
Every game will be tough, but
take the learnings
from this first period of games and,
you know, hopefully, being good
in all the games coming forward.
When your drive is to be better,
you're always motivated.
Ultimately, we're managing people,
and if every person comes
and brings his best person forward,
his best self forward, we can go
places no one thinks we can go.
(TENSE STRING MUSIC)
PRESENTER:
And a very good afternoon.
Welcome to Gillette Soccer Saturday.
It's Brentford at home to Burnley,
both sides just the one win
in the league so far.
(CAMERA SHUTTERS CLICK)
MAN: Go on, Burnley!
COACH: Come on, come on, come on.
COMMENTATOR:
Vincent Kompany brought 15 players
to the club over the summer,
13 of them aged 25 or under.
He'll now be hoping
that his side can start moving
in the right direction.
(CHEERING)
It's Lyle Foster bursting away,
turns back inside,
and there'll be a chance
on the follow up here,
and it's just the wrong side
of the post.
Maupay looking for Mbeumo,
who rolls it across.
Goal, first touch!
(CHEERING)And Yoane Wissa
says thank you very much.
(CHEERING DROWNS OUT SPEECH)
They're under way
in this second half,
as dark clouds start
to move over the Gtech Stadium.
Koleosho looks
to get the better of Ajer.
He's a very willing
and direct runner.(WHISTLE BLOWS)
It's Tresor for Burnley, who
clips it in towards the back post.
Brentford, arguably,
have had more defending to do
in the first five minutes
of this second half
than they did
in the entire first 45.
(CHANTING)
A break here for Amdouni,
but it's over the top.
Much better from Burnley
since the interval.
Sometimes in football,
you just have to ride the storm.
Onyeka striding forwards.
He's got Neal Maupay up with him,
who lays it onto Mbeumo!
(CHEERING)
Delightful goal!
Plenty of noise now
inside the Gtech.
Foster.
He could go on his own here, Foster.
Now, can he find the finish?
He rolls it across goal
and a golden chance.
(CHEERING)
How about that?!
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
A magnificent way for Brentford
to wrap up victory here
this afternoon.
(MUSIC PLAYS ON SPEAKERS IN STADIUM)
ANNOUNCER:
Vincent Kompany, everyone.
REPORTER: Vincent, what are
your thoughts on the game today?
Um I think simply that,
overall, not good enough.
Who gives a fuck
if they're bigger than us?
We have to just fucking bash them.
Put in a fucking tackle,
block the ball.
Just fucking work your balls off.
As a collective. Everyone.
Yeah, we do. We're too
fucking nice to each other.
Look in the fucking mirror.
We need to fucking do
something about it.
Too fucking easy for teams.
First fifteen minutes second half,
on top.
Then, we concede a fucking shit goal
on the fucking break again.
Fucking winds me up.
REDMOND: There's a fucking big party
out there, boys.
They fucking can't believe
they beat us.
That's one of the fucking
best games they'll play,
but we didn't get out
of fucking second or third gear.
I said at half time, when the play is
fucking ready to drop,
then we can fucking turn up.
We're scared to upset one another.
We're fucking teammates.
We need fucking digging out.
Dig your fucking friend out.
It's not fucking personal.
It's fucking business.
Too much fucking nice-guy attitude.
Dig someone out.
Fucking 3-0.
(SOFT, REFLECTIVE MUSIC)
(PHONES VIBRATE)
WOMAN: So what's?
BALL: What's the call?Yeah.So
So as part of figuring out how to
enhance the match day experience
Yeah.
..which includes drums
Yeahthe problem we've got now is
if the team doesn't win,
the focus comes on us.
At the minute, it feels like
the fans are waiting
for players to do something.
Yeah.And that needs to flip.
We've got a lot of players
who don't understand
the history of this club
and the passion.
We've also got a lot of fans
who don't understand the players
because we've got
a whole new team last season.Yeah.
That team has, like, gone,
and we've got a new team,
and all the memories
that they have with the new team
at the minute are of them losing.
There he is.
Hello.
Hi.
Jordan, the purpose of the call,
really, we're just trying to examine
what we can do generally
to improve the
the club atmosphere on match days.
We'd really love some genuine,
honest feedback from you on that.
You know, primarily, you're a fan
a big fan of the club,
and you know this town.
It does seem a bit flat this year,
and it never used to be like that.
Like, the Turf used to be quite
a tough place to come,
and it was
always quite intimidating.
I need to be clear, Jordan.
Alan is really desperate
to get behind the team.
We were just saying that
it just feels very un-Burnley-like
to leave at 20 minutes to go. Um
The drum is I just think
most of the fans think
it's just a bit naff
and not what old-school clubs have.
To just not do it is not
on Alan's radar at all, you know.
Has it had a bit of a backlash?
Is this on social media and stuff?
Yeah, yeah. So we
we we(CHUCKLES)
We posted an advert yesterday
on LinkedIn.
I didn't get a lot of sleep
last night, let's put it that way.
It's just been all over it.
I'm just honestly just slightly
worried about the safety
of the individual.
That's the biggest thing.
Some of the threats
they'll do with the drum
there's a school of thought
where we're gonna engage
with the fans and say,
"If it gets quiet,
we're gonna put a picture
of the drum up on the big screen,"
as if to say
..It's coming back. (LAUGHTER)
You'd better start making some
noise, or the drum is coming. Um
Alan didn't see the funny side of
that for some reason, but anyway
(LAUGHTER)
(LIVELY DRUM AND BRASS MUSIC)
COMMENTATOR: Well, a chance
to move out of the bottom three.
PLYER: Come on, boys, come on.
A big blow, though, for Burnley,
as Lyle Foster misses out
through illness.
KOMPANY: We've got to fucking
lift ourselves up, boys.
Be more demanding. Tell someone
to get the fuck out of the way.
And it's Beyer
that puts Burnley into the lead.
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
You will not play at this level
if this is how you react.
Semenyo wins possession back
for Bournemouth.
He'll go alone this time.
(CHEERING)
So I've said it to you before, guys.
Never let the fans dictate how
we play.
Come on! Give it! Give it!
Come on!
(CROWD DROWNS OUT SPEECH)
This cannot survive at this level.
Given away cheaply,
now Billing is going for goal here.
Philip Billing puts Bournemouth
into the lead.
PLAYER: We're last, then.
LARSEN: Yes.
How do you think the season
has gone so far?Shite.
You can't say that.
It's true.
PACE: Bring us some luck.
Lots of noise, though.Yes.
You don't by chance play a drum,
do you?No.
So, Jay Rodriguez in the
starting line-up this afternoon
as Lyle Foster misses out
through illness.
We need to start picking up points
or we're going down.
It's as simple as.Caught short,
and Ayew rolls it across goal,
and yet again,
it is a Burnley defensive mistake
punished to the maximum.
Just seen Vinny.
If he gets us relegated
and fucks off end of season,
you heard it here first.
(CHEERING)
Tyrick Mitchell
wraps it up for Crystal Palace.
PUNDIT: Six successive club losses
this season.
Not much for Vincent to smile about.
PUNDIT 2: We've had Bournemouth,
Brentford,
and now Palace,
and we've lost all three.
You looked at these three games
to kick start our season.
I don't know how you pick
the players' heads up.
Yes, boys.
I could go here and tear into you.
Absolutely fucking tear into you.
The only people we've got now
is this dressing room.
That's it: the dressing room,
the staff, that's all we've got.
Everybody else, guys,
has written you off.
The only thing you have now
is you know that
by a performance like today
performance
do you know only one thing for sure.
At the start of the game,
you had the chance to win the game.
Every single game you played.
We're gonna have to show this now.
Don't give me
the fucking result discussion.
I know it's about results. I've been
doing it my fucking whole career.
Right now is the time
to be together, go hard,
and take the next game, and show
that our lives depend on this game.
It's our fucking moment now.
Yeah? It's our moment now.
(BIRDS TWITTERING)
(DISTANT CHATTER)
TRAINER: Come on.
Not far this time. High.
Up, up, up. Bounce.
WILLIAMS: We've no divine right
to win any football match.
Doesn't matter
what happens on the grass,
if everyone in this room
and at the training ground
are doing their jobs.
Vinny overheard a cleaner
moaning about team selection.
Um He sat round the corner,
and he goes,
"I can't believe
he's played Trafford again.
Can't believe he's done this,"
and he left it and left it,
and Vinny being the type
of character that he is
sort of pulled the guy and said,
"I get that you're a fan,
But you work for us. And I get
that you've got an opinion.
What you say down the pub with
your mates you can say," he said,
"but when you're in here,
you have to be positive."
But I thought that sort of hits in
that he doesn't want negativity
around the place.
I spoke to Alan last night,
and he said,
"Please reaffirm to the staff,
if they are working
to the best of their abilities
and trying hard and sticking to
the plan, sticking to the project,
then if we do go down,
they're not gonna lose their jobs,"
he said,
"because they've done their job.
You know, it's on football
if we get relegated."
We have to buy into this positivity.
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
COACH: Switch sides.
Go the distance down there.
Go the distance.
(OVERLAPPPING SHOUTING)
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
Switch sides.
(PLAYERS SHOUTING)
MAN: On the statement
on the website,
we're putting in a couple
of mental health
we're putting in Samaritans
and Mind onto that.
Are you comfortable
with everything I was saying?
I'll freestyle it.
REPORTER: How do you sum
how Lyle has been?
Yeah, Lyle is, um
in, um
in a situation in a position now
where he needs support.
He's, um
showing signs of, um
Actually, now we have
to use the clinical terms.
So let me see the statement quickly.
Vincent, let's start off
with the most important question
about how Lyle is.
Um Lyle has been having issues
with his mental well-being,
and, um as a club,
we've very quickly,
very naturally made the decision
to fully support him.
There.
It's a learning, for sure,
having been so close
to the episodes he had,
and having largely, you know
it was a complex, complex situation.
We're obviously losing
our best player,
but you can't even consider that
for one second.
It's just got
to be about the individual.
The day before the Bournemouth game,
there was some talk that Lyle
wasn't in a good place,
and then, on the Saturday morning,
I got the call.
Lyle was gonna head back home
and not be involved in the game.
We made the decision
to drive him back up
in the morning of the Saturday
before the game,
so he could be surrounded
by professional support
as quick as we possibly could.
I think we're doing everything
we can
to, um
to get him to a place
where he can do what he enjoys doing
the most, which is playing football.
What is it? One if four people
struggle with their mental health.
Now, we're in a building
with 30-odd men.
How can one of them not
have a problem?
That's more concerning.
MAN: Thanks a million.
Alright, good luck.See you.
I can only begin to imagine what
he's gone through, going through,
but to actually allow
the club to come out
and tell the world is massive,
and it's a testament to Lyle
and his desire to get better.
Yeah, in the last couple of minutes,
Burnley have just released
a statement concerning Lyle Foster.
They say, "Recently Lyle let us know
that he continues to live with
issues around his mental well-being
and he's currently in the care
of specialists," say the club.
Football, in many ways,
is the problem and the solution.
It's the problem because
that's where the pressure comes from,
but it's also the solution because
he wants to be
he wants to play football.
That's all he knows,
and that's what he wants.
You know, I think,
in moments like this,
you have to put the human first,
and that's what we did.
(GENTLE MUSIC)
PUNDIT: With Lyle Foster being out,
we are struggling going forward.
PUNDIT 2: They haven't scored
enough goals.
They've been conceding too many,
but they're still trying
to play that nice passing football.
PUNDIT 3: Vincent Kompany said
we've just got to stop
conceding silly goals.
Stop playing around the back then.
PUNDIT 4: We can't seem
to keep the ball.
I feel like you've come up,
and you just
it's like amateur hour.
You can't go up
against these top teams
and think you can do
what you did in the Championship.
You've got to change.
Play round? Play through?
Play the whole fucker.
You don't become a coach because you
think that you can please everyone.
You're a product
of your experiences as well.
You understand the game
in a certain way.
Shutting out the noise is only
it's good practice,
it's logical, it makes sense,
because there's too many people
that love the game,
and that means there's
a lot of opinions.
(NERVOUS, TENSE MUSIC)
MOONEY: You hear people talk about
"train hard and fight easy"
which,
when you're a Championship team
and you're relatively strong,
you can do that.
As a Premier League team,
there's no way to prepare.
You try and simulate it.
You restrict the space and time
the players get to operate in
to try and compensate
for the fact that, when they get out
on the weekend, they're playing
a bigger, faster, better player.
There's a really cool analogy
we came up with
where we started to look
at the difference between Formula
One and Formula Two. So
if you took the fastest
ever Formula Two car,
the fastest lap,
and you did that for 52 laps,
that car would finish
about 11 minutes behind
in a Formula One race, minimum.
So it's a different sport,
essentially.
We have just produced one
of the best Formula Two cars
anyone will have ever seen,
but we're taking it
into a Formula One race.
You're here to compete.
That's why we do it.
Come on, Charlie, come on.
We have the lowest quality players
in the league, pretty much.
You have one of the
lowest budgets in the league.
Can you outplay these teams
technically? Probably not.
All of their players are better
than yours.(CHEERING)
Can you out-muscle these teams
physically?
Probably not.
In the Premier League,
it's every squad,
16 guys who are all mammals.
They give you 34 kilometres an hour.
They give you hundreds
of metres of sprint distance.
They can accelerate and decelerate
like you wouldn't believe.
Can't stop them.
There's nothing you can do.
You're just battling physics,
essentially.
Every pass, every action,
hundreds of actions a game have
to be perfect
cos the one mistake that you make
is gonna cost us a goal.
(CHEERING)
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
When you play these young boys,
they will make mistakes.
The mistakes get punished.
They're punished in a way
you can't believe. It's ridiculous.
We're trying to overcome something,
and that requires being brave,
taking risks, trying things that
other people haven't tried before.
If it comes off, you're a genius.
If it doesn't, you're an idiot.
For me, not trying is
way more depressing
than trying and failing.
(GENTLE MUSIC)
OBAFEMI: How are you?
Hi, you OK?
Ah, sunny Burnley.
Bye.
(ENGINE STARTS)
Welcome to the humble abode.
Everyone's different,
and everyone handles pressure
in their own way.
The stuff that's been
going on with Lyle,
I feel like the club and the Premier
League has handled it extremely well.
Like, the boys as well, the club
supporting him through everything.
You know, people think
it's all glitz and glamour,
but then obviously, like,
there's a lot of players out there
that go through a lot of stuff.
Injuries is just one example;
confidence; there's many things.
And I feel like, sometimes,
people are too quick to judge.
BEYER: It's really hard for people
to understand outside of football
how it is
because they only see the big wages,
but that's not what it's all about.
Like, when you stand on the pitch,
and you don't care about
how much money you get;
you play for the game.
(GROANS, SIGHS)
It's really hard
to switch off sometimes.Let's go.
It isn't a nice feeling always
when you do a mistake,
and you feel like, "You've been
the reason your team lost."
What am I doing?
CORK: It's tough
when you're losing games.
It's tough when you've played well
in a lot of games and just haven't
got the results we want.
Goal. (LAUGHS)
Mohamed Salah.
Sometimes, you just carry things
around and don't talk with anybody,
and you just go
in a downward spiral,
where it's getting worse and worse.
Kind of
ruins your mentality when you read
too much about social media,
so I almost go the way now
that I read as less as possible.
I feel like gaming is
kind of an escape.
I just sit here, talk to my friends,
and obviously, because
they live quite far away, uh
in London,
so I don't get to see them much.
Mental health is not something
that ever was talked about.
Think about certain players
that could have done with the help.
It's a shame to see that
that wasn't able to be sorted then,
so it's refreshing to see
a different attitude towards it.
(SIGHS) It's called the Boytels.
(PHONE LINE RINGING)
He best answer.
Tenkala Messi.
Bro. What you saying?
Nah, bruv, what you saying?
(BOTH LAUGH)
Why are you laughing?
Why are you laughing?
You just make me laugh, bro.
You off training?
It's the first session back
after internationals. Blow.
You just come back from injury.
Yeah. Game against Arsenal, innit?
Mm.
Should have scored as well, man.
Yeah, I saw it on Twitter, bro.
What did they say?
"Obafemi, he scored, he scored!"
(LAUGHS)
I'm gonna shout you later, broski.
See you later, bruv.
Love.
Calm. In a bit.
From the points view,
obviously, we're not fighting
for the Championship;
we're fighting for relegation,
but at the end of the day,
it's the same feeling.
You go into a game
with the pressure to win.
PUNDIT: Wel, it's a freezing day
at Turf Moor for what is
a huge game for Burnley
and Sheffield United this afternoon.
Burnley with a simply
horrid home form
so far in the Premier League season.
No side in the top four tiers
has ever lost
their opening eight games at home.
Is this the day things begin
to perhaps change?
PUNDIT 2: Well, if it doesn't,
they're gonna be bang in trouble.
PUNDIT 3: Home fans need
to see them win, you know?
Sheffield United -
no offence to them -
if we can't beat them,
we should give up.
We'll take three points, mate,
won't we?
Easy game today.
Easy game?
It's not.
We'll relegate them ourselves.
(LAUGHTER)
KOMPANY: It's a massive game.
You know, last year,
when we played this game, both teams
were at the top of the league,
so it's a completely
different mindset.
I think, now, um with both teams
being at the bottom,
it just shows again a little bit,
maybe, the reality
of what we're facing this season.
Time to get warm.
Time to get warm. I understand that.
I understand that.
(LAUGHS)
They must win today. Must win.
Must win.
Need a win today, eh?
We do, we do. We'll get there.
Bit of luck today, OK?
Yeah, 2-0 win. We've got this.
Can either one of you play
the drums, by chance, do you?
No, sadly not.
Would you like to learn?
BELLAMY: Come on, boys.
Charlie, come on. Keep the
standards high. Come on, big man.
(NERVOUS MUSIC)
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
COMMENTATOR: Don't see any change
in shape or approach
to the game from Vincent Kompany.
He's absolutely convinced
he's doing the right thing.
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
COMMENTATOR 2: Points have been
a lot harder to come by
in the Premier League.
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
(CROWD SINGING, CHANTING)
(APPLAUSE)
Amdouni making early progress
for Burnley.
Charlie Taylor's cross, and it's in!
Jay Rodriguez!
(CHEERING)
That was quick, very quick,
and it's just what you need
when you're facing
relegation rivals.
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
O'Shea for Bruun Larsen.
Closing in on goal.
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
And how vital
how important could that be?
Amdouni bursting through!
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
Zeki Amdouni!
Burnley might not be finished.
Koleosho.
Oh, he's got it now.
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
That is the moment!
Luca Koleosho!
Oh, it's another one!
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
And Turf Moor finally is home
sweet home to Burnley.
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
Burnley have waited a while
for a day like this.

PUNDIT: (ON RADIO)
'Oh, lads, what a day.
(PUNDITS LAUGH)
About time, about time.'
You needed that win. It's
the first win at home this season,
and that's a massive,
massive three points for you.
BALL: After the Sheffield game,
what an absolute change
in atmosphere.
It felt
so much more like last season
and what Turf Moor can
really generate.
(CROWD CHEERING, SINGING)
Just so good to hear
the Burnley fans singing,
the sound of the atmosphere.
It's just euphoric.
It's a bit loud, that.
PACE: I can only put people
in opportunities
in the place that they are,
and they've got to seize them.
I am fairly
I wouldn't say relaxed because
that's certainly not the feeling,
but I'm fairly certain
that everybody knows
the things that are at stake here,
and why it's so important
from a timing perspective.
Every day
you know, there's less time,
and there's more pressure.
This win makes us feel like,
"Hey, this is still doable."
Hopefully, it's a springboard.
We can do what we set out to do.
(STEADY, UPBEAT MUSIC)
(LINE MACHINE THRUMMING)
PLAYER: There's Lyle back.
(DISTANT CLAPPING)
(OVERLAPPING CHATTER)
KOMPANY: We had a real human tragedy,
almost, with Lyle,
when the kid broke down.
To see him rebuilding his happiness -
more than his confidence -
his happiness, to me, not even
as a coach, just as a human being,
I, um
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
Yeah, it's a beautiful story
for me to observe.
REPORTER: What is the plan for you?
Is it just step by step now?
We follow what
what the medical experts say.
Football is part of his life.
It's something he needs
to do to be happy as well.
It's a small environment.
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
It's being with a team, being with
the people he considers his friends,
um
you know, keeping a very,
very small world for him,
and that seems
to put him in a good place.
So,
this is just part of his recovery.
Thank you, gentlemen.
Thank you.
So, certainly positive noises
from Vincent Kompany.
Good to hear that Lyle Foster
is making progress,
and, obviously,
we all hope that he's back
playing football before too long.
PUNDIT: Star striker Lyle Foster is
back,
and that is a huge boost
for Burnley as they head
into the festive period.
MAN: Watch your back, guys.
COMMENTATOR: Welcome to Turf Moor
for Burnley's home game
against Everton.
Come on, Burnley! Come on!
The visitors are still reeling
from their ten-point deduction
from the Premier League,
which has landed them
right down in the relegation mix.
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
This is a big opportunity
for Burnley to close the gap.
Where do you want me?
I don't have any problem with it,
don't get me wrong.
I said because it's an opinion,
I said,
and I value various opinions.
But do I think that we've got
a 66% probability of going down? No.
(OVERLAPPING CALLS FROM REPORTERS)
(CAMERA SHUTTERS CLICK)
Former manager Sean Dyche
returns to Turf Moor
for the first time
since he left in April 2022.
Dyche won two promotions
and European qualification
during his nine and a half years
in East Lancashire.
His first ever game in management
was here at Turf Moor.
511 games later,
he is back in the away dug out.
MAN: Do you reckon Dyche's
coming back tonight?
MAN 2: I don't know.
Think it'll be a big game.
It's the first time
he's come back since he left.
Would you have him back?
I don't know.
They've been playing better
in recent weeks, it's just
see how we do tonight first.
COACH: Focus, gents. (CLAPPING)
Pack that intense rival gestures
straight from the off.
Close the circle, boys, let's go.
It's about defying expectations.
(BELL RINGS)
The team you're facing now is
a half-a-billion-pound squad.
Come on, boys, come on!
But since when has fucking success
been about fucking talent only?
Never.
CROWD: Go on, Burnley!
It's never been
about fucking talent, boys.
It's been about fucking hard work.
And the team is on a journey.
Every single step of the way,
you guys are elite.
That's what gives you the right
when you cross that line
to fucking hope.
Not just hope. Believe.
So today, again,
you defy expectations
through your togetherness,
out there every minute,
every ball, all the time, boys.
Go on, Burnley! Go on, Burnley!
And you have another opportunity
to create a moment.
Disgrace!Trust me, if results don't
improve, it's gonna get worse.
Everyone's written us off.
You get tested in these moments.
It's easy to say, "Do you know what?
It's not for me."
PUNDIT: Plenty of eyes
on deadline day.
We both know that the football world
is full of bullshit.
COMMENTATOR: A cruel twist
right at the end.
MAN: We're going legal on this one.
They've been dreadful.
His team are all over the place.
It's about over my dead body.
# ARCTIC MONKEYS: Brainstorm #
This programme contains very strong
language from the outset and
throughout.
BELLAMY: Sky TV.
(ALL CHATTER, GROAN)
MAN: Yes, Bellers.
(ALL GROAN)
Yes, good.
(OVERLAPPING CHATTER)
Oh, come on, no!
PLAYER: That was a shit one.
Unlucky.
PLAYER 2: Got a few
more efforts to go.
(ALL LAUGH)
Punish him.
(LAUGHTER)
(OVERLAPPING CHATTER)
He really can't afford to miss this.
(WHISTLE BLOWS)

(ALL GROAN, LAUGH)
Fucking haters.

(BIRDS TWITTERING)
PUNDIT: (VO) "Fan reaction, then.
Luton Town 1- 2 Burnley.
Burnley get their first win
of the season."
BURNLEY FAN:
We won a game of football.
You know that feeling right there
in the middle of your chest?
That's relief.
We actually had Foster to put
the ball in the back of the net.
Honestly, that bloke is an absolute
essential in this team.
I'm sorry, guys,
but Burnley, one away win,
no home wins - that's a concern.
Pressure's gonna build.
PACE: So, let me out.
I wanna I'm
I'm gonna lead in
and start the conversation.
"We've gone to having
a more regular strategy discussion
within the club,
trying to combine
both the footballing side
and the business side,
and helping people understand
what is the focus
of all of our efforts.
And everyone's role needs
to feel like it has an impact."
Thank you for joining us.
So, football-centricity.
What does it mean to you?
Being football-centric
..it's something I've discussed
with Alan from day one.
And I said that my experience
in many football clubs is
that clubs are organised
in various segments,
but it's not really aligned.
Is everyone playing a part
in making sure the team performs,
that 1%, that edge,
that 0.5%, even, if it needs to be?
I think especially
for a club like us,
where we don't have the means
of other clubs in the league,
we're competing against teams earning
what, £400, £500 million a year?
We're a quarter of that size.
Obviously, there's lots of things
in the background
that will hopefully make
the fan experience, which is
my responsibility, better.
What can we do to make
to give it that little bit of extra?
Um Our own home advantage,
for example,
you know, have we thought
about the type of song
that we play
before we go onto the pitch?
Not because it's good for the fans;
for performance.
Have we thought about it,
like,
what it actually does
to either impress the opponent,
or or make our team stronger?
How do we increase
this territoriality feeling?
Because home advantage is
so present in football.
It's not a myth.
It's It's real, home advantage.
How do you How do you weaponise
these people to help you win games?
(LAUGHTER)
It's
Nothing wrong with this. Just keep
it simple, right? How do you
How do you weaponise these people
to help us overcome £10, £20,
£30 million pounds in shortfall,
in terms of pound-for-pound quality?
But it's something we have to think
about, if you look at Turf Moor,
first and foremost, as a place
for us to go and win points.
That's the key for me, yeah.
We have to understand that this is
the best place for us to win points.
And winning points, as we've seen,
versus losing points,
it has quite a different effect
on all our lives.
(ENERGETIC MUSIC)
(CROWD CHANTING)
PUNDIT: "Good afternoon
and a warm welcome to Turf Moor
for Burnley's home game
against Chelsea."
Hi, how are you guys?
You alright?
Nervous.
(CHUCKLES)
"I think it's going the way
that we expected it to go.
I think we hoped that we would
somehow see
something magically different
about bringing a whole bunch
of new players.
But the level of competition
(NERVOUS MUSIC)
..it's huge.
All good, all good. How are you?
Emotionally, I the you know
when I stay off of social media,
I'm fine.
But we're feeling like
we would really like not
to be in that relegation zone.
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
Burnley won at Luton
on Tuesday night.
FAN: That was a very, very important
game. We're hoping that, today,
that that same confidence is
displayed here at Turf Moor
with the crowd behind us.
CROWD: (CHANTING)
Burnley! Burnley! Burnley!
(TENSE MUSIC)
ANNOUNCER: Welcome number 17,
Lyle Foster.
Top-scorer Lyle Foster
already three goals for him.
CROWD: (CHANTING)
Chelsea! Chelsea! Chelsea! Chelsea!
Burnley! Burnley! Burnley! Burnley!
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
(DRAMATIC, TENSE MUSIC)
COMMENTATOR: Here's Foster,
taking the game to Chelsea,
trying to find a way through.
Odobert hits it, and scores!
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
What a moment for him.
What a start for Burnley.
Maybe it's all starting
to come together
for the Clarets
in the Premier League.
(DRAMATIC, CHILLING MUSIC)
Finds a way through, and it's in.
Disaster for Burnley.
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
(CROWD GROANS) (WHISTLE BLOWS)
And a penalty kick is given.
(DEEP, UNSETTLING MUSIC)
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
A big moment,
and a game-changing moment
for Burnley and Chelsea.
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
PACE: People are
in a delusional state
if they think that,
by leaving at 60,
70 minutes into a game, they're
gonna play harder for me next week.
We have an obligation, that
when things aren't going our way,
to actually be more supportive,
not less supportive,
even when they fail a million times.
CROWD: (CHANTING) You're not singing,
you're not singing anymore.
You're not singing anymore.
You're not singing,
you're not singing,
you're not singing anymore.
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
The Burnley bubble bursts after
their midweek victory over Luton.
Burnley 1 - 4 Chelsea.
(CROWD BOOING)
There's no hiding from the fact
that we've lost our first five
at home in the Premier League.
HUNT: So I'd like to start out today
with the match day reporting.
The atmosphere in the stadium,
we've had several comments
to Alan and the directors.
Like, it was just it felt flat.
There were times in the stadium
it just felt flat.
We need that entertainment
back into the bowl.
We've got countdown to kick-off
Yeahwhen players come out.
They do the handshake,
they do the Premier League music,
then it goes flat.
It's all about the music line-up.
Get Eight Mile by Eminem going,
and get Guns 'n' Roses going,
get whatever it is
that's hyping people up nowadays,
so that we can build up
to that kick-off, right?
We're gonna have drums, OK?
So just get get ready for it.
We're gonna have drums.
I think for those of you
that saw Alan's email,
this is not a negotiable position.
There will be a drum
at the next game.
Is this Is this fan-led again?
Is this someone
we've paid to come in?
MAN: We should have fans
that are, like,
willing to do it
because they want it to happen.
This is not real skilled
percussionists, right?
This is like,
"I can boom, boom, boom," right?
From a British perspective,
like, I do think
there is something in that, you
know, not being too afraid of it.
I do think we should try
and push it a little bit.
The New York Ice Hockey Rangers,
they got some guy
that beats on his head
during half time, right?
He's, like, the slap guy.
(LAUGHTER)
It's these crazy guys
that actually do stuff, right?
We need to make sure if we execute
this, we execute it well, though.
MAN: Absolutely. It's gotta be
Bob on.
Just make sure A: we've got
the right person to bang it, and
what they're banging is effective.
Some of the players
have come to me
and suggested
that the atmosphere is poor.
If you leave at 60 minutes,
and we still have 30 minutes
to play, we've got to do something,
and we can't just turn on AC/DC
and crank it up.
The fanbase does not understand
the impact that they have on a team.
We need to change the atmosphere,
and drum is a way.
(TENSE, THROBBING MUSIC)
(BIRDS CHATTERING)
(DISTANT CHATTERING, SHOUTING)
KOMPANY: Reet, press hard,
kick the ball in.
(WHISTLE BLOWS) Let's go.
PLAYER: What's he doing?
Bring somebody out.
Don't go round the box.
Don't hold the same line.
BELLAMY: We knew it was gonna be
tough. We knew what it was gonna be.
Um We would have expected
to be better.
(OVERLAPPING SHOUTING)
(FAINT APPLAUSE)
I feel we're better than the points
we've consumed so far
..um but this league is
it's a very unforgiving league.
Lads,
you can't go to the goalkeeper.
We fall on the fucking back line.
Fucking jump.
We're never gonna start as being
the best,
but we can get there.
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
Easy, boys. Wait for your moment.
You can't say, "I want confidence,"
you can't say, "I want results."
You have to live in a certain way
to achieve results.
Gotta be hard.
You're not gonna get the ball
by asking nicely.
And then, it's about controlling:
controlling your emotions.
It's being on that fine limit
of being passionate and driven
but never reckless.
And again, boys. Last time.
People who behave in that way
become winners.
Do not fucking test me.
Do not fucking test me.
Enough.
Enough of the fucking moaning.
Enough with the fucking moaning.
Play fucking football.
What gives you the fucking right to
moan about everything? Fucking play!
How many times do I have to tell you?
Stop fucking moaning.
(OVERLAPPING CHATTER)
What? Have you got something
you wanna communicate to the team?
You wanna communicate something,
you big boy?
You're a big boy. You wanna talk?
What you talking about?
It wasn't against you. I just said
"Can we finish that task?"
No, you're moaning about everything.
What have I moaned about today?
Body language.
Body language is fucking shit.
I'm not accepting it. Behave.
Fucking hell, man.
It's fucking life or death!
Fucking play!
We know that. I fucking know that.
Fuckin' hell!
I've had e-fucking-nough of this.
Just two more before you go in.
(SIGHS)
Yeah, yeah. (CHUCKLES)
REPORTER: We've got to that stage
in the season
where everybody I think accepted
that your opening fixtures were
very difficult.
How pressurised are
these games gonna come now?
You've got Brentford
and Bournemouth away.
Every game will be tough, but
take the learnings
from this first period of games and,
you know, hopefully, being good
in all the games coming forward.
When your drive is to be better,
you're always motivated.
Ultimately, we're managing people,
and if every person comes
and brings his best person forward,
his best self forward, we can go
places no one thinks we can go.
(TENSE STRING MUSIC)
PRESENTER:
And a very good afternoon.
Welcome to Gillette Soccer Saturday.
It's Brentford at home to Burnley,
both sides just the one win
in the league so far.
(CAMERA SHUTTERS CLICK)
MAN: Go on, Burnley!
COACH: Come on, come on, come on.
COMMENTATOR:
Vincent Kompany brought 15 players
to the club over the summer,
13 of them aged 25 or under.
He'll now be hoping
that his side can start moving
in the right direction.
(CHEERING)
It's Lyle Foster bursting away,
turns back inside,
and there'll be a chance
on the follow up here,
and it's just the wrong side
of the post.
Maupay looking for Mbeumo,
who rolls it across.
Goal, first touch!
(CHEERING)And Yoane Wissa
says thank you very much.
(CHEERING DROWNS OUT SPEECH)
They're under way
in this second half,
as dark clouds start
to move over the Gtech Stadium.
Koleosho looks
to get the better of Ajer.
He's a very willing
and direct runner.(WHISTLE BLOWS)
It's Tresor for Burnley, who
clips it in towards the back post.
Brentford, arguably,
have had more defending to do
in the first five minutes
of this second half
than they did
in the entire first 45.
(CHANTING)
A break here for Amdouni,
but it's over the top.
Much better from Burnley
since the interval.
Sometimes in football,
you just have to ride the storm.
Onyeka striding forwards.
He's got Neal Maupay up with him,
who lays it onto Mbeumo!
(CHEERING)
Delightful goal!
Plenty of noise now
inside the Gtech.
Foster.
He could go on his own here, Foster.
Now, can he find the finish?
He rolls it across goal
and a golden chance.
(CHEERING)
How about that?!
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
A magnificent way for Brentford
to wrap up victory here
this afternoon.
(MUSIC PLAYS ON SPEAKERS IN STADIUM)
ANNOUNCER:
Vincent Kompany, everyone.
REPORTER: Vincent, what are
your thoughts on the game today?
Um I think simply that,
overall, not good enough.
Who gives a fuck
if they're bigger than us?
We have to just fucking bash them.
Put in a fucking tackle,
block the ball.
Just fucking work your balls off.
As a collective. Everyone.
Yeah, we do. We're too
fucking nice to each other.
Look in the fucking mirror.
We need to fucking do
something about it.
Too fucking easy for teams.
First fifteen minutes second half,
on top.
Then, we concede a fucking shit goal
on the fucking break again.
Fucking winds me up.
REDMOND: There's a fucking big party
out there, boys.
They fucking can't believe
they beat us.
That's one of the fucking
best games they'll play,
but we didn't get out
of fucking second or third gear.
I said at half time, when the play is
fucking ready to drop,
then we can fucking turn up.
We're scared to upset one another.
We're fucking teammates.
We need fucking digging out.
Dig your fucking friend out.
It's not fucking personal.
It's fucking business.
Too much fucking nice-guy attitude.
Dig someone out.
Fucking 3-0.
(SOFT, REFLECTIVE MUSIC)
(PHONES VIBRATE)
WOMAN: So what's?
BALL: What's the call?Yeah.So
So as part of figuring out how to
enhance the match day experience
Yeah.
..which includes drums
Yeahthe problem we've got now is
if the team doesn't win,
the focus comes on us.
At the minute, it feels like
the fans are waiting
for players to do something.
Yeah.And that needs to flip.
We've got a lot of players
who don't understand
the history of this club
and the passion.
We've also got a lot of fans
who don't understand the players
because we've got
a whole new team last season.Yeah.
That team has, like, gone,
and we've got a new team,
and all the memories
that they have with the new team
at the minute are of them losing.
There he is.
Hello.
Hi.
Jordan, the purpose of the call,
really, we're just trying to examine
what we can do generally
to improve the
the club atmosphere on match days.
We'd really love some genuine,
honest feedback from you on that.
You know, primarily, you're a fan
a big fan of the club,
and you know this town.
It does seem a bit flat this year,
and it never used to be like that.
Like, the Turf used to be quite
a tough place to come,
and it was
always quite intimidating.
I need to be clear, Jordan.
Alan is really desperate
to get behind the team.
We were just saying that
it just feels very un-Burnley-like
to leave at 20 minutes to go. Um
The drum is I just think
most of the fans think
it's just a bit naff
and not what old-school clubs have.
To just not do it is not
on Alan's radar at all, you know.
Has it had a bit of a backlash?
Is this on social media and stuff?
Yeah, yeah. So we
we we(CHUCKLES)
We posted an advert yesterday
on LinkedIn.
I didn't get a lot of sleep
last night, let's put it that way.
It's just been all over it.
I'm just honestly just slightly
worried about the safety
of the individual.
That's the biggest thing.
Some of the threats
they'll do with the drum
there's a school of thought
where we're gonna engage
with the fans and say,
"If it gets quiet,
we're gonna put a picture
of the drum up on the big screen,"
as if to say
..It's coming back. (LAUGHTER)
You'd better start making some
noise, or the drum is coming. Um
Alan didn't see the funny side of
that for some reason, but anyway
(LAUGHTER)
(LIVELY DRUM AND BRASS MUSIC)
COMMENTATOR: Well, a chance
to move out of the bottom three.
PLYER: Come on, boys, come on.
A big blow, though, for Burnley,
as Lyle Foster misses out
through illness.
KOMPANY: We've got to fucking
lift ourselves up, boys.
Be more demanding. Tell someone
to get the fuck out of the way.
And it's Beyer
that puts Burnley into the lead.
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
You will not play at this level
if this is how you react.
Semenyo wins possession back
for Bournemouth.
He'll go alone this time.
(CHEERING)
So I've said it to you before, guys.
Never let the fans dictate how
we play.
Come on! Give it! Give it!
Come on!
(CROWD DROWNS OUT SPEECH)
This cannot survive at this level.
Given away cheaply,
now Billing is going for goal here.
Philip Billing puts Bournemouth
into the lead.
PLAYER: We're last, then.
LARSEN: Yes.
How do you think the season
has gone so far?Shite.
You can't say that.
It's true.
PACE: Bring us some luck.
Lots of noise, though.Yes.
You don't by chance play a drum,
do you?No.
So, Jay Rodriguez in the
starting line-up this afternoon
as Lyle Foster misses out
through illness.
We need to start picking up points
or we're going down.
It's as simple as.Caught short,
and Ayew rolls it across goal,
and yet again,
it is a Burnley defensive mistake
punished to the maximum.
Just seen Vinny.
If he gets us relegated
and fucks off end of season,
you heard it here first.
(CHEERING)
Tyrick Mitchell
wraps it up for Crystal Palace.
PUNDIT: Six successive club losses
this season.
Not much for Vincent to smile about.
PUNDIT 2: We've had Bournemouth,
Brentford,
and now Palace,
and we've lost all three.
You looked at these three games
to kick start our season.
I don't know how you pick
the players' heads up.
Yes, boys.
I could go here and tear into you.
Absolutely fucking tear into you.
The only people we've got now
is this dressing room.
That's it: the dressing room,
the staff, that's all we've got.
Everybody else, guys,
has written you off.
The only thing you have now
is you know that
by a performance like today
performance
do you know only one thing for sure.
At the start of the game,
you had the chance to win the game.
Every single game you played.
We're gonna have to show this now.
Don't give me
the fucking result discussion.
I know it's about results. I've been
doing it my fucking whole career.
Right now is the time
to be together, go hard,
and take the next game, and show
that our lives depend on this game.
It's our fucking moment now.
Yeah? It's our moment now.
(BIRDS TWITTERING)
(DISTANT CHATTER)
TRAINER: Come on.
Not far this time. High.
Up, up, up. Bounce.
WILLIAMS: We've no divine right
to win any football match.
Doesn't matter
what happens on the grass,
if everyone in this room
and at the training ground
are doing their jobs.
Vinny overheard a cleaner
moaning about team selection.
Um He sat round the corner,
and he goes,
"I can't believe
he's played Trafford again.
Can't believe he's done this,"
and he left it and left it,
and Vinny being the type
of character that he is
sort of pulled the guy and said,
"I get that you're a fan,
But you work for us. And I get
that you've got an opinion.
What you say down the pub with
your mates you can say," he said,
"but when you're in here,
you have to be positive."
But I thought that sort of hits in
that he doesn't want negativity
around the place.
I spoke to Alan last night,
and he said,
"Please reaffirm to the staff,
if they are working
to the best of their abilities
and trying hard and sticking to
the plan, sticking to the project,
then if we do go down,
they're not gonna lose their jobs,"
he said,
"because they've done their job.
You know, it's on football
if we get relegated."
We have to buy into this positivity.
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
COACH: Switch sides.
Go the distance down there.
Go the distance.
(OVERLAPPPING SHOUTING)
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
Switch sides.
(PLAYERS SHOUTING)
MAN: On the statement
on the website,
we're putting in a couple
of mental health
we're putting in Samaritans
and Mind onto that.
Are you comfortable
with everything I was saying?
I'll freestyle it.
REPORTER: How do you sum
how Lyle has been?
Yeah, Lyle is, um
in, um
in a situation in a position now
where he needs support.
He's, um
showing signs of, um
Actually, now we have
to use the clinical terms.
So let me see the statement quickly.
Vincent, let's start off
with the most important question
about how Lyle is.
Um Lyle has been having issues
with his mental well-being,
and, um as a club,
we've very quickly,
very naturally made the decision
to fully support him.
There.
It's a learning, for sure,
having been so close
to the episodes he had,
and having largely, you know
it was a complex, complex situation.
We're obviously losing
our best player,
but you can't even consider that
for one second.
It's just got
to be about the individual.
The day before the Bournemouth game,
there was some talk that Lyle
wasn't in a good place,
and then, on the Saturday morning,
I got the call.
Lyle was gonna head back home
and not be involved in the game.
We made the decision
to drive him back up
in the morning of the Saturday
before the game,
so he could be surrounded
by professional support
as quick as we possibly could.
I think we're doing everything
we can
to, um
to get him to a place
where he can do what he enjoys doing
the most, which is playing football.
What is it? One if four people
struggle with their mental health.
Now, we're in a building
with 30-odd men.
How can one of them not
have a problem?
That's more concerning.
MAN: Thanks a million.
Alright, good luck.See you.
I can only begin to imagine what
he's gone through, going through,
but to actually allow
the club to come out
and tell the world is massive,
and it's a testament to Lyle
and his desire to get better.
Yeah, in the last couple of minutes,
Burnley have just released
a statement concerning Lyle Foster.
They say, "Recently Lyle let us know
that he continues to live with
issues around his mental well-being
and he's currently in the care
of specialists," say the club.
Football, in many ways,
is the problem and the solution.
It's the problem because
that's where the pressure comes from,
but it's also the solution because
he wants to be
he wants to play football.
That's all he knows,
and that's what he wants.
You know, I think,
in moments like this,
you have to put the human first,
and that's what we did.
(GENTLE MUSIC)
PUNDIT: With Lyle Foster being out,
we are struggling going forward.
PUNDIT 2: They haven't scored
enough goals.
They've been conceding too many,
but they're still trying
to play that nice passing football.
PUNDIT 3: Vincent Kompany said
we've just got to stop
conceding silly goals.
Stop playing around the back then.
PUNDIT 4: We can't seem
to keep the ball.
I feel like you've come up,
and you just
it's like amateur hour.
You can't go up
against these top teams
and think you can do
what you did in the Championship.
You've got to change.
Play round? Play through?
Play the whole fucker.
You don't become a coach because you
think that you can please everyone.
You're a product
of your experiences as well.
You understand the game
in a certain way.
Shutting out the noise is only
it's good practice,
it's logical, it makes sense,
because there's too many people
that love the game,
and that means there's
a lot of opinions.
(NERVOUS, TENSE MUSIC)
MOONEY: You hear people talk about
"train hard and fight easy"
which,
when you're a Championship team
and you're relatively strong,
you can do that.
As a Premier League team,
there's no way to prepare.
You try and simulate it.
You restrict the space and time
the players get to operate in
to try and compensate
for the fact that, when they get out
on the weekend, they're playing
a bigger, faster, better player.
There's a really cool analogy
we came up with
where we started to look
at the difference between Formula
One and Formula Two. So
if you took the fastest
ever Formula Two car,
the fastest lap,
and you did that for 52 laps,
that car would finish
about 11 minutes behind
in a Formula One race, minimum.
So it's a different sport,
essentially.
We have just produced one
of the best Formula Two cars
anyone will have ever seen,
but we're taking it
into a Formula One race.
You're here to compete.
That's why we do it.
Come on, Charlie, come on.
We have the lowest quality players
in the league, pretty much.
You have one of the
lowest budgets in the league.
Can you outplay these teams
technically? Probably not.
All of their players are better
than yours.(CHEERING)
Can you out-muscle these teams
physically?
Probably not.
In the Premier League,
it's every squad,
16 guys who are all mammals.
They give you 34 kilometres an hour.
They give you hundreds
of metres of sprint distance.
They can accelerate and decelerate
like you wouldn't believe.
Can't stop them.
There's nothing you can do.
You're just battling physics,
essentially.
Every pass, every action,
hundreds of actions a game have
to be perfect
cos the one mistake that you make
is gonna cost us a goal.
(CHEERING)
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
When you play these young boys,
they will make mistakes.
The mistakes get punished.
They're punished in a way
you can't believe. It's ridiculous.
We're trying to overcome something,
and that requires being brave,
taking risks, trying things that
other people haven't tried before.
If it comes off, you're a genius.
If it doesn't, you're an idiot.
For me, not trying is
way more depressing
than trying and failing.
(GENTLE MUSIC)
OBAFEMI: How are you?
Hi, you OK?
Ah, sunny Burnley.
Bye.
(ENGINE STARTS)
Welcome to the humble abode.
Everyone's different,
and everyone handles pressure
in their own way.
The stuff that's been
going on with Lyle,
I feel like the club and the Premier
League has handled it extremely well.
Like, the boys as well, the club
supporting him through everything.
You know, people think
it's all glitz and glamour,
but then obviously, like,
there's a lot of players out there
that go through a lot of stuff.
Injuries is just one example;
confidence; there's many things.
And I feel like, sometimes,
people are too quick to judge.
BEYER: It's really hard for people
to understand outside of football
how it is
because they only see the big wages,
but that's not what it's all about.
Like, when you stand on the pitch,
and you don't care about
how much money you get;
you play for the game.
(GROANS, SIGHS)
It's really hard
to switch off sometimes.Let's go.
It isn't a nice feeling always
when you do a mistake,
and you feel like, "You've been
the reason your team lost."
What am I doing?
CORK: It's tough
when you're losing games.
It's tough when you've played well
in a lot of games and just haven't
got the results we want.
Goal. (LAUGHS)
Mohamed Salah.
Sometimes, you just carry things
around and don't talk with anybody,
and you just go
in a downward spiral,
where it's getting worse and worse.
Kind of
ruins your mentality when you read
too much about social media,
so I almost go the way now
that I read as less as possible.
I feel like gaming is
kind of an escape.
I just sit here, talk to my friends,
and obviously, because
they live quite far away, uh
in London,
so I don't get to see them much.
Mental health is not something
that ever was talked about.
Think about certain players
that could have done with the help.
It's a shame to see that
that wasn't able to be sorted then,
so it's refreshing to see
a different attitude towards it.
(SIGHS) It's called the Boytels.
(PHONE LINE RINGING)
He best answer.
Tenkala Messi.
Bro. What you saying?
Nah, bruv, what you saying?
(BOTH LAUGH)
Why are you laughing?
Why are you laughing?
You just make me laugh, bro.
You off training?
It's the first session back
after internationals. Blow.
You just come back from injury.
Yeah. Game against Arsenal, innit?
Mm.
Should have scored as well, man.
Yeah, I saw it on Twitter, bro.
What did they say?
"Obafemi, he scored, he scored!"
(LAUGHS)
I'm gonna shout you later, broski.
See you later, bruv.
Love.
Calm. In a bit.
From the points view,
obviously, we're not fighting
for the Championship;
we're fighting for relegation,
but at the end of the day,
it's the same feeling.
You go into a game
with the pressure to win.
PUNDIT: Wel, it's a freezing day
at Turf Moor for what is
a huge game for Burnley
and Sheffield United this afternoon.
Burnley with a simply
horrid home form
so far in the Premier League season.
No side in the top four tiers
has ever lost
their opening eight games at home.
Is this the day things begin
to perhaps change?
PUNDIT 2: Well, if it doesn't,
they're gonna be bang in trouble.
PUNDIT 3: Home fans need
to see them win, you know?
Sheffield United -
no offence to them -
if we can't beat them,
we should give up.
We'll take three points, mate,
won't we?
Easy game today.
Easy game?
It's not.
We'll relegate them ourselves.
(LAUGHTER)
KOMPANY: It's a massive game.
You know, last year,
when we played this game, both teams
were at the top of the league,
so it's a completely
different mindset.
I think, now, um with both teams
being at the bottom,
it just shows again a little bit,
maybe, the reality
of what we're facing this season.
Time to get warm.
Time to get warm. I understand that.
I understand that.
(LAUGHS)
They must win today. Must win.
Must win.
Need a win today, eh?
We do, we do. We'll get there.
Bit of luck today, OK?
Yeah, 2-0 win. We've got this.
Can either one of you play
the drums, by chance, do you?
No, sadly not.
Would you like to learn?
BELLAMY: Come on, boys.
Charlie, come on. Keep the
standards high. Come on, big man.
(NERVOUS MUSIC)
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
COMMENTATOR: Don't see any change
in shape or approach
to the game from Vincent Kompany.
He's absolutely convinced
he's doing the right thing.
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
COMMENTATOR 2: Points have been
a lot harder to come by
in the Premier League.
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
(CROWD SINGING, CHANTING)
(APPLAUSE)
Amdouni making early progress
for Burnley.
Charlie Taylor's cross, and it's in!
Jay Rodriguez!
(CHEERING)
That was quick, very quick,
and it's just what you need
when you're facing
relegation rivals.
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
O'Shea for Bruun Larsen.
Closing in on goal.
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
And how vital
how important could that be?
Amdouni bursting through!
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
Zeki Amdouni!
Burnley might not be finished.
Koleosho.
Oh, he's got it now.
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
That is the moment!
Luca Koleosho!
Oh, it's another one!
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
And Turf Moor finally is home
sweet home to Burnley.
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
Burnley have waited a while
for a day like this.

PUNDIT: (ON RADIO)
'Oh, lads, what a day.
(PUNDITS LAUGH)
About time, about time.'
You needed that win. It's
the first win at home this season,
and that's a massive,
massive three points for you.
BALL: After the Sheffield game,
what an absolute change
in atmosphere.
It felt
so much more like last season
and what Turf Moor can
really generate.
(CROWD CHEERING, SINGING)
Just so good to hear
the Burnley fans singing,
the sound of the atmosphere.
It's just euphoric.
It's a bit loud, that.
PACE: I can only put people
in opportunities
in the place that they are,
and they've got to seize them.
I am fairly
I wouldn't say relaxed because
that's certainly not the feeling,
but I'm fairly certain
that everybody knows
the things that are at stake here,
and why it's so important
from a timing perspective.
Every day
you know, there's less time,
and there's more pressure.
This win makes us feel like,
"Hey, this is still doable."
Hopefully, it's a springboard.
We can do what we set out to do.
(STEADY, UPBEAT MUSIC)
(LINE MACHINE THRUMMING)
PLAYER: There's Lyle back.
(DISTANT CLAPPING)
(OVERLAPPING CHATTER)
KOMPANY: We had a real human tragedy,
almost, with Lyle,
when the kid broke down.
To see him rebuilding his happiness -
more than his confidence -
his happiness, to me, not even
as a coach, just as a human being,
I, um
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
Yeah, it's a beautiful story
for me to observe.
REPORTER: What is the plan for you?
Is it just step by step now?
We follow what
what the medical experts say.
Football is part of his life.
It's something he needs
to do to be happy as well.
It's a small environment.
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
It's being with a team, being with
the people he considers his friends,
um
you know, keeping a very,
very small world for him,
and that seems
to put him in a good place.
So,
this is just part of his recovery.
Thank you, gentlemen.
Thank you.
So, certainly positive noises
from Vincent Kompany.
Good to hear that Lyle Foster
is making progress,
and, obviously,
we all hope that he's back
playing football before too long.
PUNDIT: Star striker Lyle Foster is
back,
and that is a huge boost
for Burnley as they head
into the festive period.
MAN: Watch your back, guys.
COMMENTATOR: Welcome to Turf Moor
for Burnley's home game
against Everton.
Come on, Burnley! Come on!
The visitors are still reeling
from their ten-point deduction
from the Premier League,
which has landed them
right down in the relegation mix.
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)
This is a big opportunity
for Burnley to close the gap.
Where do you want me?
I don't have any problem with it,
don't get me wrong.
I said because it's an opinion,
I said,
and I value various opinions.
But do I think that we've got
a 66% probability of going down? No.
(OVERLAPPING CALLS FROM REPORTERS)
(CAMERA SHUTTERS CLICK)
Former manager Sean Dyche
returns to Turf Moor
for the first time
since he left in April 2022.
Dyche won two promotions
and European qualification
during his nine and a half years
in East Lancashire.
His first ever game in management
was here at Turf Moor.
511 games later,
he is back in the away dug out.
MAN: Do you reckon Dyche's
coming back tonight?
MAN 2: I don't know.
Think it'll be a big game.
It's the first time
he's come back since he left.
Would you have him back?
I don't know.
They've been playing better
in recent weeks, it's just
see how we do tonight first.
COACH: Focus, gents. (CLAPPING)
Pack that intense rival gestures
straight from the off.
Close the circle, boys, let's go.
It's about defying expectations.
(BELL RINGS)
The team you're facing now is
a half-a-billion-pound squad.
Come on, boys, come on!
But since when has fucking success
been about fucking talent only?
Never.
CROWD: Go on, Burnley!
It's never been
about fucking talent, boys.
It's been about fucking hard work.
And the team is on a journey.
Every single step of the way,
you guys are elite.
That's what gives you the right
when you cross that line
to fucking hope.
Not just hope. Believe.
So today, again,
you defy expectations
through your togetherness,
out there every minute,
every ball, all the time, boys.
Go on, Burnley! Go on, Burnley!
And you have another opportunity
to create a moment.
Disgrace!Trust me, if results don't
improve, it's gonna get worse.
Everyone's written us off.
You get tested in these moments.
It's easy to say, "Do you know what?
It's not for me."
PUNDIT: Plenty of eyes
on deadline day.
We both know that the football world
is full of bullshit.
COMMENTATOR: A cruel twist
right at the end.
MAN: We're going legal on this one.
They've been dreadful.
His team are all over the place.
It's about over my dead body.
