A Sleeping Tiger Part 2

1

What the hell were you thinking, Darren?
Well, I got a tip-off last night,
so I followed procedure,
and I made an arrest.
You should have run it by me first.
I tried, but your phone
was switched off.
I was tied up in court.
We suspected she was hiding evidence.
I couldn't risk losing it,
so I used my initiative.
Where's the DCI?
Manchester at a conference.
He's coming in now.
If we can tie Liam
Manley to the robbery,
this could be the breakthrough
that we need, boss.
Let's interview Tasha Walker
under caution
and then get those clothes
tested by forensics.
Yeah. Do you need me on it?
It's my arrest.
No. I think we got this covered now.
CAROL: Liam Manley's clothes.
Do you want to tell us why
they were in your bedroom?
He asked me to look
after them last night.
Tasha, you kept them
for close to 24 hours.
That was evidence that
could tie him to a robbery.
Well, I couldn't hand them over
without blowing my cover.
I didn't plan on getting arrested.
ALEX: Let me guess Donna Burnside.
She must have seen us
together in the pub.
CAROL: So why did Liam come to you?
You asked me to get close to him.
Yeah, but that was after
you give him a false alibi.
Yeah, but I needed to get him on side.
Our forensics team,
they've just got back to us.
The paint flecks that were
on Ryan Stanford's trousers,
they're not a match for Callum's van.
All right. Well,
that rules him out of Ryan's murder.
And puts Liam Manley
right back in the frame.
No. Liam isn't a killer.
He's dangerous and unpredictable,
which is why I'm
taking you off the case.
I'm not done yet.
That isn't your decision to make.
I think we should all just
take a deep breath, right?
I know Liam's hiding the stolen gear.
Did he say where?
Not yet.
I just need some more time.
A word.
[DOOR OPENS]
[DOOR CLOSES]
[DOOR OPENS]
[BEEP]
We're gonna have to
bring Liam Manley in.
Absolutely.
Absolutely, but if we bring him in now,
then we blow our chance
of nailing Penrose
and all the other heavy
hitters further up the chain.
I read up on Tasha's pre-assessment.
There were concerns expressed
about her mental health,
family issues, the rift with her dad.
There was nothing in that file
that was a deal breaker.
You knew?
Of course I knew. I was her handler,
made it me business to know.
Maybe your own history
is clouding your judgment here.
What do you mean by that?
She's young. She's green.
She's the same age as Ella.
I think we should leave
my daughter out of this.
I think you're too
close to this, Ridley.
And I think you've got a chance
of nailing Sansom and Penrose,
and you will only get one.
Oh, so how do we know we can trust her?
Right now, Carol,
you don't have much choice.
[DOOR CLOSES]
Let's keep this simple.
You have agreed to be
questioned without a solicitor.
Everything you say
will be on the record.
However, your cover will remain intact.
CAROL: No one else
in the investigative team
will have any idea that you're part
of this covert operation, OK?
Liam's gonna ask questions.
So we arrested you on a tip-off.
You refused to cooperate
with the police.
The whereabouts of those clothes
are as yet unknown,
so we are releasing you
as a person under investigation.
I still need to square
this with the team.
Yeah. Unless forensics come
back with a positive test,
there is nothing that ties
Tasha to any of this.
Don't make me regret this, Ridley.
[DOOR OPENS]
[DISTANT SIREN]

Well?
Liam Manley.
Is there something
you're not telling me?
You really think I'd be that stupid?
Well, I seriously hope not
because if you've instigated
a sexual relationship
with a suspect under investigation,
that will negate any chance we have
of an impartial trial,
never mind a conviction.
Thought you said you had my back.
You lied to me, Tasha!
Right now, I don't even
know which side you're on!
You wanted to know why I left.
My dad used to knock my mum about,
treat her like dirt.
My 18th birthday,
we threw a party at the pub.
Dad had been drinking,
really knocking it back,
started on my mum because
the cake was all wrong.
I got between them, and that's when
he raised his hand to me.
Mum was too scared to stop him.
I packed a bag, and I walked that night.
I knew that I had to
take care of myself!
[BREATHING HEAVILY]
I signed up for training
a few weeks later,
and it was the best
decision I ever made.
[BREATHING HEAVILY]
We've got a name of
a possible middleman.
His name is Terry Sansom.
Now, if Liam is sitting on a big pile
of stolen jewelry, we will need to know
where the drop is going to be.
This is a tracking device.
The first chance you get,
you stick it on Liam's car,
under the wheel arch,
by the number plates,
so long as it's hidden.

Don't let me down, Tasha.
You contact me first
thing in the morning.
On you go.

I'll call.

[DOOR CLOSES]

- Hey.
- Hey.
What's all this?
What's it look like?
I'd have taken you out for dinner.
Well, I wanted you all to myself.
I thought we could talk,
just the two of us.
Mm. Did Ridley put you up to this?
He's he's just looking out for me.
No. He just can't bear the thought
that you might be moving on without him.
Well,
you know, maybe things are
moving a bit fast
and he is right about one thing.
I barely know you, Harry.
Well, we can work on that.
- I'm an open book.
- Hmm.
You know, I've been meaning
to give you this for a while.
Now seems like the perfect moment.
It's, um
Um, I can't accept this.
No strings, no expectations,
just a token of my affection for, um,
making me a better man.

Thought my wife had
answered all your questions.
Yeah. Well, it was you
I wanted to speak to.
Well, if this is about that lad
Ryan Stanford. Yes.
Your wife confirmed that he did
some work about the place.
Katharine dealt with all of that.
Ever crossed paths with
a fellow called Terry Sansom?
I think I met him at the races once,
works in haulage
Amongst other things, yeah.
not really our sort.
Yeah? Well, see, we think Terry Sansom
is behind this spate
of jewelry robberies,
that his business is a front
for moving stolen goods.
What's that got to do with me?
Well, he's gonna be working
with a group of unnamed associates.
Am I under investigation here?
Oh. What's all this?
Detective Ridley had
some follow-up questions.
Actually, it's ha!
it's not detective anymore.
I'm just a consultant.
What is it you needed to know?
It's just that we have a witness
who's testified that Ryan Stanford
couriered large sums
of money to this stud.
Which implicates you
in criminal activity.
Well, whoever told you that was lying,
so unless you've any evidence
to back up these claims
Yeah. Well, you know,
we're working on that one.
I'll see meself out.
Ohh
That phone call from, uh, Ryan,
did you mention it to Simon?
Are you hiding something?
No. It's, the grooms like to gossip,
whatever Janey might have told you.
Did you have an affair
with Ryan Stanford?
What, you really think
I'd throw all this away
for that -stirring, little toerag?
Are you covering for your husband?
Because if you are,
it might come back to bite you.
Why on earth would I cover for him?
Oh, I don't know.
Big house, fancy car, school fees,
all paid for by dirty money.
I mean, that might weigh heavily
on anybody with a conscience.
You keep away from my family.
[FOOTSTEPS ON GRAVEL]

Tash.
They let you out, then?
Haven't got anything on me.
What about those clothes?
I told you, I'll get rid of them.

wanted to know if you'd
ever mentioned him.
Now, why would they ask you that?
You tell me.
I'm just looking after
some stuff for him, all right?
Couple more days, I'll be rid of it.
And Ryan?
What about him?
He was murdered, Liam,
right after he got himself bailed.
One word to the police that you
were involved in those robberies
What, do you think I had
something to do with it?
I don't know.
Ryan was my best mate.
You're never gonna change,
are you, Liam?

[JAZZ COMBO PLAYING]

No Harry tonight?
He was in earlier. You just missed him.

gonna tell me it might be stolen.

You never had anything on him.
I was just looking out for you, Annie.

grown-up son he hardly ever sees,
all of it laid out, nothing to hide.
Harry might come with a bit of baggage,
but, you know, don't we all at our age?

Oh, she'll manage. She always does.
Who's Ella?
Ella was my daughter.
She's dead, I'm afraid.
I'm sorry.
Yeah. You remind me of
her sometimes, you know
willful, impetuous, law unto yourself.
Maybe you're right.
Maybe I'm not cut out for this.
No. You're a good cop, Tasha.
You got the job done.
Then I guess we can call it quits.
You take care of yourself, Ridley.

[PING]
WOMAN ON PA:
Cross-connect service
running from this station
to Manchester.

[CHIME]
WOMAN ON PA: The train arriving
at Platform 1
is a cross-connecting service
running to Manchester.
Please step out
from the platform edge
as the train approaches.

[WHISTLE BLOWS]

ALEX: I nearly jeopardized
a case recently,
put a colleague in danger,
young female officer.
I went beyond the point of giving her
the benefit of the doubt.
I I really didn't
behave professionally.
I think I was projecting.
Ella?
You identified it. That's good.

You'll never get over
the loss of your daughter,
nor should you ever want to.
When you're dealing
with a traumatic memory,
you need to approach it carefully,
quietly, like tiptoeing
up to a sleeping tiger.
