The Wanderer (2022) s02e02 Episode Script
Morocco: A Vibrant Tapestry of Colors
1
I'm Alex.
- And I'm Kate.
- And we're brother and sister.
Yep, we've been working together
now for about 11 years, haven't we?
We've been doing social media and YouTube.
It originally started because we
both trained in musical theater.
And then while we were waiting for work
and things like that, we thought,
why not do something with our time?
So we created a YouTube channel,
and it was all about baking.
So Kate was the master baker.
and I enjoyed playing
with cameras and stuff.
He was the brains.
He had all the cameras,
the lights and everything.
Otherwise it probably wouldn't
have happened without you really!
We've now been working
together for 11 years.
Now we have a really good bond, I think.
Yeah, when we found out we were going
to be hosting this episode,
I think we were really excited.
It's just so weird not
to know where you're going!
Do we go now?
Yeah.
This is something, a little clue
to let you know where you're going.
Okay.
Hi!
This is for you!
This is for me?
Thank you very much!
- Ooh!
Have you ever seen any of these before?
Never!
Oh, so it's like a paste
in the middle there.
Okay.
It was actually hidden!
Yeah.
Shall we turn it over?
Okay, we are going to
Oh, and it's in an envelope!
The anticipation!
I kept thinking I was going to reveal it.
You are going to
Morocco!
No way!
No way!
- Do you know what, I had a feeling
it was kind of like Moroccan vibes!
Never been there for any of our travels.
So this is really awesome!
And if there's those treats,
we'll be very happy!
We'll be sorted!
That's really cool!
Production arranged for us an epic tour
of the country hitting five major cities.
We're going to start in Casablanca,
jump on a super quick train to Rabat,
then road trip in style through Fez,
Chefchaouen, and end on a high in Tangier.
We have landed in Morocco.
It's our first day in Casablanca.
Yeah, and we're going to check out
the markets in the Medina
and see what it's all like.
Let's go!
It's boiling today, isn't it?
It's absolutely boiling!
Thrown straight in the
deep end with the heat!
Thank goodness for linen!
Yeah!
Hello!
- You are welcome.
Where do you come from?
London.
England!
You are English?
- Yes, have you been?
Yes.
I lived in Earls Court.
- No way!
I've never seen so many
different olives in my life!
This is amazing!
Yeah.
Look how juicy they look!
I think I'm going to go for this one.
- Okay.
It looks really delicious.
Oh that's incredible!
I love coming to a market when I travel.
You'd have to spend so much time here
going to all the stalls,
I have to say,
I think starting at the Medina was
probably the perfect
way to start the trip.
Definitely!
So what are we doing today then?
So I've seen this guy on Instagram.
He's this amazing photographer.
And he really captures
the culture of Casablanca.
You showed me the photos!
- Yeah.
He's going to tell us his story, tell us
about Casablanca from his perspective.
So I'm really excited to see
him and see what he has to say.
That'd be cool!
- Hey, Joseph!
Hey, Alex.
How are you?
I'm Joseph I'm Kate, nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you, too!
So were you born and raised
then in Casablanca?
Yeah, absolutely.
I know every corner.
I have this ability of talking to people
and helping them to understand.
I love that about the mentality here.
And is this why you're
drawn to photography?
Because you want to show what see
of Casablanca to the outside world?
Absolutely!
I feel that here there were those
pictures that came earlier about Morocco.
The desert, camels and many things.
But I came after those photographers,
Or those people that picture Morocco.
I like to show them other things.
Yeah.
Because is richer than that!
There are more things to see!
Joseph's work was truly fascinating.
His efforts to present an alternative
narrative of his culture became clear
to us as we walked around and learned
about the city through his eyes.
This is absolutely beautiful!
The Hassan II Mosque isn't just stunning.
It's got the world's tallest minaret
at 210 meters, with a laser
that points straight to Mecca.
it's a cool mix of tradition,
modern flair and ocean vibes.
Has it become normal seeing that now?
Or every time you see it
are you still like, wow!?
No, you never!
You never get enough from the mosque!
They achieved it in 1993.
Do you remember?
Yeah, I was a kid, and I remember
that we contributed to it.
Because we had to put money in it.
- It was a project of,
Hassan II, the King.
Everyone is connected to this mosque
because they contributed to it.
- That's nice.
It's like community.
It's ours, you know.
- Yeah.
Every season, it's showing another color.
A week you come here, it's different.
It reacts with the lights.
Well that's the thing with the photos!
I bet you've had some
amazing sunset shots.
- Absolutely, and this
is photography for me!
I come back every time here, to enjoy it.
I know it brings me joy.
And also, it just gives me this
opportunity to see people,
to watch them and have the chance
to take pictures of them.
Yeah.
So where are you guys from?
We're from Ohio.
Ohio!
Where are you going to visit
for the rest of your trip?
- Well, we went to Tangier for a day.
We've come here from yesterday to today.
And then tomorrow Marrakesh.
Two days there and then
the desert for three.
What about you guys?
What are you guys going to visit?
Well, we need some recommendations!
Yeah, that's the thing!
- Tangier is incredible!
Oh, is it?
- I'm telling you.
Tangier is amazing!
You guys have got to go!
What's your guys' YouTube?
It's called "ThisWithThem".
You guys are massive!
Good lord!
That's crazy!
Thanks for participating and joining in.
- No problem, this was fun.
It's been great to meet you today, Joseph.
And learn about you and your
story and how you see Casablanca.
The other thing we've heard about
Casablanca is it's got good nightlife.
Is there anything you
can recommend for us?
Absolutely.
Ain Diab, it's really good for nightlife.
- Yeah.
And I think also Skies.
It fits maybe your needs,
you could go there.
Yeah.
Thank you very much.
- Thank you so much!
- Thank you so much!
- It's been great!
- Bye bye.
Thank you.
Ciao ciao.
Our arrival in Casablanca
was truly remarkable.
This is the country's economic capital.
Radiating energy from every corner.
We were captivated by the magnetic sunset
along the seaside and the grandeur
of the Hassan II mosque.
Now we're heading downtown to experience
the renowned nightlife
the city has to offer.
Wow!
Look at the food here.
Nice.
- Wow.
- Merci beaucoup.
- Enjoy What a great
first day in Casablanca.
I know!
It's only been a few hours in Morocco,
and look where I am!
Did you notice the roof
of the train station?
I'm not sure if this is the old part.
Oh yeah, we've kind of got the old
train station with the new.
It looks so modern!
But that's similar
to the mosque, isn't it?
Because the Mosque had a green roof.
What are you guys filming?
It looks very cool.
We're actually filming
a TV show at the minute.
Yeah, it's called The Wanderer.
and we're creating a travel guide
with Tripadvisor here in Morocco.
We actually arrived yesterday.
There's nowhere in Morocco that you
can go that won't be amazing.
Yeah.
- So make sure you enjoy!
- We're loving it so far.
Interact with Moroccan people that are
some of the best people I've ever seen.
- Very hospitable.
- Yeah.
And if you have no plan,
it's going to be a good time.
Thank you so much
for your recommendations.
- Enjoy the rest of your trip.
- See you.
Ciao.
I hope we make this train,
because we left it a little bit late.
Oh, no!
Pushing it a bit fine.
If I'm honest, I realized how
little I knew about this country.
I couldn't hide my surprise when I heard
we could take a high speed
train to get to Rabat.
And what a service!
I swear they're not making train stations,
they're making airports here!
Look at that!
That's massive!
They're going all out on the architecture!
The journey from Casablanca to Rabat was
only 45 minutes,
and that was enough to see a huge
difference between the two cities.
Rabat is the capital of the country.
The quality of the greenery and these palm
trees are just there to remind us,
we are officially in holiday mode.
I was hoping on our trip we
would go somewhere like this.
Oh, that's beautiful!
What did you think of your room?
This is absolutely beautiful!
It's like a princess castle, isn't it?
I'm in love with my blue bath.
Yeah, that's kind of cool!
Just don't get the feet
in that will cost you extra!
I think we need to get our bearings.
- Yeah.
To kind of understand the city a bit more.
Yeah, I was watching
loads of videos online.
They were saying it's like
Morocco's Los Angeles.
I feel like we need to get out there
and kind of do a bit more of a tour.
- Yeah.
That sounds really good yeah.
I think if we walk,
we'll be on the ground.
We'll be able to interact with people
and then we'll really get
to understand what's going on.
- Okay, I'm up for it!
Let's go!
So you've got to lift and in.
See, when it comes to Alex having a go,
I become the professional.
In fact, there are many
ways to explore a city.
Our walking tour turned into a water tour.
Rabat j'adore
I could just lay down on this boat
and enjoy the gentle sound of the paddles.
The music in the distance.
Voices of locals swimming
and fishing around.
It's pure meditation.
I think sometimes when Alex and I are
together, we can bring out the kid
in each other and get quite competitive.
There were some adults getting
involved too, I promise!
I win!
I win!
After that little racing appetizer, we
felt it necessary to step things up a bit.
We looked up things to do on Tripadvisor,
and we ended up at one of the most
famous go-karting tracks in Morocco.
It's going to be fun!
You're going down Kate!
- I think you're going down!
Look at the three steps there.
And I'm going to be up on that top,
and you're going to be bowing down!
You wish, you wish!
- Hello.
- Hey.
Welcome to VGK.
VGK is the first and the historical,
karting circuit in Morocco.
Yes.
We are between Casablanca and Rabat.
we have a one kilometer circuit.
You're welcome to try and have
a drive test if you want.
- Yes.
That would be great, thank you.
- So follow me.
Follow me.
You ready to lose?
Right, let's up the ante.
Whoever loses has to run the whole
truck with their helmet on.
Okay.
You up for that?
Yep!
Okay.
Three. Two.
One.
He's so far behind me!
Okay.
You won.
Fair and square.
I thought I was going to get you
on that last corner but you nailed it!
I know!
Sorry, then now that means
you have to do the running!
- Okay Keep your hat on!
- I'm going to go, I'll see you in a bit!
- See you!
Let's take the racing line.
So I have to go as little as possible.
Dear oh dear!
This is fun.
Well done Allie!
He looks so small!
After that rather humbling loss,
I decided we needed to settle the score.
I learned Morocco is a massive golfing
destination and so many courses
are present in the Kingdom.
So we decided to arrange a golf
lesson with Golf Master Ali.
This is not just any golf course.
This is the Royal Golf Dar es Salam.
Built by His late Majesty King Hassan II.
- Hello!
Hey!
- Welcome to Dar es Salam.
- Thank you.
Alex.
- My name is Ali.
- Kate.
- Nice to meet you.
Did you ever play golf?
We've only ever played mini golf.
So, I don't know how this is going to go!
- It's okay.
This golf course, it's about the 25th
best golf course in the world.
- Wow!
Absolutely.
- I feel very privileged to be here then.
My dream is one day when I say Morocco,
people say "oh, the golf courses." Yeah.
- and it's certainly
dream of all Moroccans.
And the head of that is
the King of Morocco.
His dream is to make the people happy.
And you see all the green area?
You see Rabat is all green.
- Yeah.
- It's the sewage water being treated.
Everything, it's been
treated by that water.
Now, come please.
Three. Two.
One.
Okay.
Go ahead.
Oh, yeah.
- Yeah.
- Oh, that was not bad!
Not bad at all!
Forward motion!
Easy.
Just easy.
Whoa!
- That's not bad!
That's not too bad?
Into the tree!
Final shot.
Okay?
If I pop this, you have to carry
all the crew's equipment back, okay?
Okay, deal.
- Yeah?
Hey!
Why am I cheering?
Go get that stuff!
Off you go!
How's it going?
Good.
Is that heavy enough?
- Do you need a hand?
- It's quite heavy actually!
Oh, sorry.
See you!
After a fascinating rematch,
it was time to pick up our car
and head to our next city.
Fez.
I can't deny it.
Road tripping still holds
so much excitement for me.
You get to see a whole
new side to a country.
Oh, yeah.
This is definitely your thing Kate!
That's quite some architecture, isn't it?
Is there a big drop down there or not?
Yeah, Looks pretty decent.
Yeah.
You need to pay the highway, the toll.
Little did we know that the crew had more
in store for us than just
the pleasant scenery.
Are you on the speaker Alex?
Yes.
On speaker.
So it's game time now.
It's game time.
Game time!
Well I'm certainly getting nervous now!
So you have to say in French, a sentence.
- Oui.
"The pen is on the table and we
are going to Fez." Oh, okay.
The pen..
And remember you cannot search
on the internet, by the way.
We can see you on camera!
And you have ten minutes.
Ten minutes!
Oh dear!
This is stressing me out!
Do you know where the minibus went?
- I have no clue where the minibus went!
Let me get back to the maps.
Go, continue around that way.
Hey Matt.
So you do you want
to know know what it is?
Yes, please!
Bonjour.
I need you to translate something for me.
But I don't speak French very well.
Time is up.
Did you find the answer?
- Oui oui.
- Possible. Le stylo est sur la table.
Et nous allons partir à Fez.
Yeah.
We got there!
After a rather stressful game time,
we woke up refreshed and headed
straight to the heart to Fez.
The medina.
Wow! This is what everyone's
been telling us about!
It's incredible.
- And I thought those things were painted.
- Yeah.
But they're tiles, aren't they?
That's their handcrafted goods.
Oh, I love that there!
Look at the shutters, this is beautiful!
Fez is the oldest of Morocco's imperial
cities
and it's certainly very impressive.
We had heard it was renowned
for its history of craftsmanship.
So we set out on a shopping extravaganza
to take in the sights and sounds.
That doorway almost looks like a keyhole.
Oh, this is cool, because
we're outside with the trees!
Nice awnings.
Oh, we haven't seen these before.
Yeah, these are beautiful!
The black with the terracotta.
Yeah.
Salam.
- Salam.
I've never seen the terracotta
with the black before.
- Is that local to here or?
- Local work in Fez.
- I burn, the wood of cedar.
- Yep.
And it gives a resin.
Oh, wow!
Yeah.
When you put the water in,
it gives the taste.
Yeah.
Wow.
That's amazing!
Oh, yeah.
You can really smell it.
When I am very strong, I work very hard!
- Yeah.
It's beautiful.
I think we're missing a great opportunity
to get ourselves I'll treat you to a pair,
and maybe you can treat me to a pair.
And every time you visit,
you have to wear the slippers.
So what I pick for you is for you.
Okay.
What I pick for you, is for you.
Too small?
Too small, too small!
Anything bigger?
Try them on.
- How are these ones?
Yeah, I think they're the ones.
They're colorful. They're you.
I can see you wearing them
when you come visit me.
I feel like I'm wearing banana skins.
Yes!
Fez Medina, known as Fez El Bali,
is the oldest and largest Medina in
Morocco, dating back to the ninth century.
It is also a Unesco World Heritage Site
and home to the world's oldest university.
To learn more about our slippers,
we headed to where their journey begins.
The Chouara Tannery.
This is the largest and the biggest
tannery in all of North Africa
Wow!
It's never been restored,
never been changed.
There is over 950 families working here.
Generation to generation.
From father to the son.
So this is the same, its always been..
All the same, from the 14th century.
Always the same way.
For example, the red, poppy flower.
- Poppy flower?
- Yeah.
Brown.
Cedar wood.
So this is camel leather.
See how it's light please?
So light.
Oh yeah.
Very light.
Yeah.
This is what I got back from England.
They're heavy but they're quality,
It's heavy and smelly.
It's a cow leather.
Sheep is cheap.
Sheep is cheap!
Yes.
Baby goats.
Baby goats.
- That's like a chamois leather.
- It's very thin.
And are other leathers that are produced
here, are they used around the world
or are they mainly used here?
Well here we are only for the big
brands, we sell to Italy.
We sell for all the brands here.
- That must make you feel very proud.
- Yeah.
We are unique, you know,
because we work with the natural product,
we don't work with the chemicals.
So this is the only place in the world.
On our way to lunch,
we bumped into an American couple
who were on their honeymoon.
We hit it off instantly,
so we invited them to join us.
We had heard the views in Fez are
spectacular, so we started looking
for the best rooftops in the city.
We were not disappointed
when we found Dar Rafti.
Yeah.
How did you decide on Morocco?
We both really wanted to go
to Spain, in the past.
It was like on both of our lists.
Yeah.
And then we also wanted
to go somewhere that
we heard a lot of interesting,
cool things about.
But maybe, you know,
we haven't been to before either.
So we read a lot of social media
posts about Morocco
and how beautiful it is.
And, we came and it was right.
I mean, everyone's just walking
in the streets down below
and how friendly everyone is.
- I don't know, I really like being able to..
Today we woke up.
We had breakfast at our riad,
and then, we just decided to wander.
Walk around the streets
with no real plan, just to kind of see..
Did you have a path planned?
Did you just let yourself go?
Because I was like, "Alex, don't leave me!"
I don't have my phone on me.
There were a couple times where
we turned a corner
and I'd be like, wait a second!
Oh my god, could you imagine?
Well thankfully you're
quite brightly colored!
Yeah, he's a big.
After a day of walking,
we were pretty exhausted,
so we took full advantage
of the production crew's dinner and drinks
treat at another luxurious rooftop spot.
I think the location
of this is just perfect, isn't it?
To be able to sit over
and see out where we've been today.
- So special.
- And just take it all in.
The other thing that's been running
through our whole trip,
other than food and family and meeting
all these lovely people, is color.
And like it was I think it was you
who first commented and we arrived and it
was blue taxis instead of red taxis.
Yes!
And and have you noticed
we're back to red here in Fez?
Back to red.
I was thinking maybe yellow but no.
And the green roofs, and the tiles.
Yes, more green roofs.
And where we are going
tomorrow, Chefchaouen.
- The blue city.
- Hisham said that's the blue city.
- The guy we met at the train station.
- Yeah, I'm looking forward to that.
- You got a blue outfit?
- I've got a blue outfit.
J'adore Fez.
Salut, on to the blue.
On to Chefchaouen.
Now, with only a few days left on our
journey, we headed to our penultimate
destination, the infamous
blue city of Morocco.
Chefchaouen.
We've got quite a while to go.
- Yeah, ages to go.
- I think we need some snacks.
- A nice little service station.
- Right next to a tractor.
A blue tractor!
Isn't that funny.
All the tractors at home,
I feel like are green and yellow.
In the middle of nowhere.
But it's beautiful, isn't it?
Look at this view!
Next up Chefchaouen.
Here we come!
The crew quickly assigned us the mission
of discovering why and how
this city became entirely blue.
There's certainly no resting
whilst hosting The Wanderer.
Salam.
Do you speak any English?
We're just wondering, why is it blue here?
Historically from Moriscos,
coming from Spain.
Well, are we going left or right?
Woah! We are definitely going left!
Oh my word!
It feels like a set, doesn't it?
It does!
Right, stand there.
Pass me my phone.
That's on brand, isn't it, blue steel.
Salam.
Would you be able to tell us
a bit of the history of the blue?
It's the Jewish, the Jewish people.
- Yes, so we're creating
a travel guide with Tripadvisor.
- Tripadvisor?
I love Tripadvisor!
- Oh you do?
- Yes, I love Tripadvisor!
The day before yesterday I was in Fez
looking for a place to eat
and I found it by Tripadvisor.
Nice!
That's what we like to hear.
Yes, and I love it.
It was exactly what I was looking for.
Yeah, I feel like you
could easily get lost.
Today I came with a guide because
I couldn't find this place.
And then my guide is over there, Mohammed.
This guy is very, very nice.
If you come to Morocco,
please, contact this guy.
Hi lovely to meet you.
Where does the blue come from?
The blue come from the Jewish people.
Actually, back in the day,
the Jewish people used to live here.
And the people who decided
to turn all these walls blue.
Some people, they say
because the blue was the color of the sky,
and the color of the sea.
That way that keeps them close to heaven.
Some other people, they say because
of the mosquitoes, the blue.
It takes the mosquitoes off.
So these are the two ideas,
but there's nothing confirming them.
That is beautiful.
And is it a paint or is it dye?
It's a stone, you know.
- Or something natural?
Yeah.
It's from something natural.
It's a stone, you know, it's a clay.
- It's beautiful!
Do you have any other recommendations?
We're going to Tangier next.
I would like to recommend you visit
in Tangier, Cap Spartel, Casbah,
The old Medina and the seaside areas.
You can enjoy it there!
- We'll be making sure we tick those off.
Thank you so much.
Thank you so much, great to meet you.
After a long day of discovering
Chefchaouen, we checked into our beautiful
hotel on the mountain top and kicked out
the crew so we could get some peace
and quiet away from game times.
The last day of our trip was finally here,
and with it came the anticipation
of our final destination, Tangier.
We had seen so much already,
yet the allure of Tangier's vibrant
streets and rich history filled us
with excitement for one last adventure.
We headed straight to the Casbah,
the oldest part of Tangier.
It's so lovely down here!
I love how all of their electrical
meters, there's like art.
- Yeah.
Oh, wow! That's pretty!
Wow!
This is so cool!
Instead of just having
their electrical box out.
They've added art to
give it a bit of artistic flair.
These two are so cute.
They're like holding hands!
Can you see that it's got a tag.
It's the same person.
Punksy.
This is so cool!
I'm enjoying how many cafes they are.
This has definitely got a cool feel to it.
Yeah!
Oh, these are the people
that have been here.
Anthony Bourdain.
Café Baba, Parts Unknown, Tangier.
For 83 years, Café Baba has perched above
Tangier's medina and served pretty much
every celebrity under the sun,
from the Kings of both Spain and Sweden
to the Rolling Stones and Patti Smith,
and even former Secretary
to the United Nations Kofi Annan.
That's some pretty tough
act to follow if you ask me.
Shall we go right?
Yeah.
I'm loving this down here.
It feels really creative.
Salam labassa!
- Hello!
You know what it means, Salam?
Yes.
Hello.
It means peace.
Oh, peace?
That's what it means, Salam.
It's peace and is the best word
that we use in our country.
Oh, that's nice!
We've been walking a lot today,
and we're getting a bit hungry.
Is there anywhere you can recommend
for us to eat? Any foods we should try?
Okay.
My friend.
Tangier is full of restaurants.
Do you have a local
sweet we need to try?
Okay okay.
Okay.
I'll give you the name, it's easy to arrive there.
This is going to be a hard choice.
Look at these in boxes.
What are you thinking?
Maybe two to three each?
- Yeah.
And then we can decide
who picks the best one.
Okay, go on.
Is that all of the ones you chose?
Yeah, they look amazing
They look absolutely amazing.
How much is that?
It's fifteen dirhams.
- Fifteen dirhams.
Perfect.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
We've got a feast.
Look at these.
- Feast on our hands.
They look great don't they.
So should we start with this one.
Yeah.
That's what our friend
in the market told us about.
Briwat.
yeah, cheers!
It's good isn't it?
It's like sweet, honey.
Crispy layers.
Kind of savory as well.
It's like cinnamon do you think?
Cheers.
This is definitely a hot spot.
Yeah, it looks like it, doesn't it?
This is the most north
westerly point of Africa.
Oh, I should have known that!
Where the Atlantic meets
the Mediterranean Ocean.
Ah!
- Yeah.
All right.
We've been walking for quite a while now.
I think we need to sit down.
Maybe finish at the beach.
Yeah.
Dip our toes in the sea.
Yeah.
See if the sunset comes through for us.
- Hopefully have a good sunset tonight!
It'll be a nice way to end our trip.
Yeah let's do it!
Warm or cold, what do you reckon?
Hold on, let's do the game where you've
got to see who can be hit the last.
Okay.
How long does this take?
Well, we step forward after every one.
Okay.
All right, all right, take a step.
It's not too chilly actually, is it?
It's quite nice!
No, it's a little chilly!
You got it!
You got it!
In the net.
Very distinguished gentleman.
He's very upright.
Isn't he?
Having a little game of volleyball was
nice to finish off the trip.
I know, I enjoyed that.
That was so funny!
We both decked it as well!
Yeah, I think they probably just
stopped counting points at that point.
Yeah, maybe that one,
we win fair and square.
Last challenge of the trip.
Even Stevens.
- Even Stevens.
That's a nice way to go, hey?
We couldn't believe it.
The trip had finally come to a momentous
end, and it was time
to head to the airport and go home.
Well done Al.
Well done Kate.
It's been a really good trip,
really enjoyed it.
Have you?
Really enjoyed it!
I'm going to be crying
on camera in a minute!
- Maybe that's what they wanted.
- Yeah, probably!
Maybe you should
shed a little tear there Kate.
But we really have made so many friends,
And the whole crew though,
have just been so fun and amazing.
Even if they've set us some
- Crazy challenges!
Right, I think we're nearly there.
Shall we turn the GoPros off?
- Yeah, lets do it.
Bye guys!
- Bye!
I'm Alex.
- And I'm Kate.
- And we're brother and sister.
Yep, we've been working together
now for about 11 years, haven't we?
We've been doing social media and YouTube.
It originally started because we
both trained in musical theater.
And then while we were waiting for work
and things like that, we thought,
why not do something with our time?
So we created a YouTube channel,
and it was all about baking.
So Kate was the master baker.
and I enjoyed playing
with cameras and stuff.
He was the brains.
He had all the cameras,
the lights and everything.
Otherwise it probably wouldn't
have happened without you really!
We've now been working
together for 11 years.
Now we have a really good bond, I think.
Yeah, when we found out we were going
to be hosting this episode,
I think we were really excited.
It's just so weird not
to know where you're going!
Do we go now?
Yeah.
This is something, a little clue
to let you know where you're going.
Okay.
Hi!
This is for you!
This is for me?
Thank you very much!
- Ooh!
Have you ever seen any of these before?
Never!
Oh, so it's like a paste
in the middle there.
Okay.
It was actually hidden!
Yeah.
Shall we turn it over?
Okay, we are going to
Oh, and it's in an envelope!
The anticipation!
I kept thinking I was going to reveal it.
You are going to
Morocco!
No way!
No way!
- Do you know what, I had a feeling
it was kind of like Moroccan vibes!
Never been there for any of our travels.
So this is really awesome!
And if there's those treats,
we'll be very happy!
We'll be sorted!
That's really cool!
Production arranged for us an epic tour
of the country hitting five major cities.
We're going to start in Casablanca,
jump on a super quick train to Rabat,
then road trip in style through Fez,
Chefchaouen, and end on a high in Tangier.
We have landed in Morocco.
It's our first day in Casablanca.
Yeah, and we're going to check out
the markets in the Medina
and see what it's all like.
Let's go!
It's boiling today, isn't it?
It's absolutely boiling!
Thrown straight in the
deep end with the heat!
Thank goodness for linen!
Yeah!
Hello!
- You are welcome.
Where do you come from?
London.
England!
You are English?
- Yes, have you been?
Yes.
I lived in Earls Court.
- No way!
I've never seen so many
different olives in my life!
This is amazing!
Yeah.
Look how juicy they look!
I think I'm going to go for this one.
- Okay.
It looks really delicious.
Oh that's incredible!
I love coming to a market when I travel.
You'd have to spend so much time here
going to all the stalls,
I have to say,
I think starting at the Medina was
probably the perfect
way to start the trip.
Definitely!
So what are we doing today then?
So I've seen this guy on Instagram.
He's this amazing photographer.
And he really captures
the culture of Casablanca.
You showed me the photos!
- Yeah.
He's going to tell us his story, tell us
about Casablanca from his perspective.
So I'm really excited to see
him and see what he has to say.
That'd be cool!
- Hey, Joseph!
Hey, Alex.
How are you?
I'm Joseph I'm Kate, nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you, too!
So were you born and raised
then in Casablanca?
Yeah, absolutely.
I know every corner.
I have this ability of talking to people
and helping them to understand.
I love that about the mentality here.
And is this why you're
drawn to photography?
Because you want to show what see
of Casablanca to the outside world?
Absolutely!
I feel that here there were those
pictures that came earlier about Morocco.
The desert, camels and many things.
But I came after those photographers,
Or those people that picture Morocco.
I like to show them other things.
Yeah.
Because is richer than that!
There are more things to see!
Joseph's work was truly fascinating.
His efforts to present an alternative
narrative of his culture became clear
to us as we walked around and learned
about the city through his eyes.
This is absolutely beautiful!
The Hassan II Mosque isn't just stunning.
It's got the world's tallest minaret
at 210 meters, with a laser
that points straight to Mecca.
it's a cool mix of tradition,
modern flair and ocean vibes.
Has it become normal seeing that now?
Or every time you see it
are you still like, wow!?
No, you never!
You never get enough from the mosque!
They achieved it in 1993.
Do you remember?
Yeah, I was a kid, and I remember
that we contributed to it.
Because we had to put money in it.
- It was a project of,
Hassan II, the King.
Everyone is connected to this mosque
because they contributed to it.
- That's nice.
It's like community.
It's ours, you know.
- Yeah.
Every season, it's showing another color.
A week you come here, it's different.
It reacts with the lights.
Well that's the thing with the photos!
I bet you've had some
amazing sunset shots.
- Absolutely, and this
is photography for me!
I come back every time here, to enjoy it.
I know it brings me joy.
And also, it just gives me this
opportunity to see people,
to watch them and have the chance
to take pictures of them.
Yeah.
So where are you guys from?
We're from Ohio.
Ohio!
Where are you going to visit
for the rest of your trip?
- Well, we went to Tangier for a day.
We've come here from yesterday to today.
And then tomorrow Marrakesh.
Two days there and then
the desert for three.
What about you guys?
What are you guys going to visit?
Well, we need some recommendations!
Yeah, that's the thing!
- Tangier is incredible!
Oh, is it?
- I'm telling you.
Tangier is amazing!
You guys have got to go!
What's your guys' YouTube?
It's called "ThisWithThem".
You guys are massive!
Good lord!
That's crazy!
Thanks for participating and joining in.
- No problem, this was fun.
It's been great to meet you today, Joseph.
And learn about you and your
story and how you see Casablanca.
The other thing we've heard about
Casablanca is it's got good nightlife.
Is there anything you
can recommend for us?
Absolutely.
Ain Diab, it's really good for nightlife.
- Yeah.
And I think also Skies.
It fits maybe your needs,
you could go there.
Yeah.
Thank you very much.
- Thank you so much!
- Thank you so much!
- It's been great!
- Bye bye.
Thank you.
Ciao ciao.
Our arrival in Casablanca
was truly remarkable.
This is the country's economic capital.
Radiating energy from every corner.
We were captivated by the magnetic sunset
along the seaside and the grandeur
of the Hassan II mosque.
Now we're heading downtown to experience
the renowned nightlife
the city has to offer.
Wow!
Look at the food here.
Nice.
- Wow.
- Merci beaucoup.
- Enjoy What a great
first day in Casablanca.
I know!
It's only been a few hours in Morocco,
and look where I am!
Did you notice the roof
of the train station?
I'm not sure if this is the old part.
Oh yeah, we've kind of got the old
train station with the new.
It looks so modern!
But that's similar
to the mosque, isn't it?
Because the Mosque had a green roof.
What are you guys filming?
It looks very cool.
We're actually filming
a TV show at the minute.
Yeah, it's called The Wanderer.
and we're creating a travel guide
with Tripadvisor here in Morocco.
We actually arrived yesterday.
There's nowhere in Morocco that you
can go that won't be amazing.
Yeah.
- So make sure you enjoy!
- We're loving it so far.
Interact with Moroccan people that are
some of the best people I've ever seen.
- Very hospitable.
- Yeah.
And if you have no plan,
it's going to be a good time.
Thank you so much
for your recommendations.
- Enjoy the rest of your trip.
- See you.
Ciao.
I hope we make this train,
because we left it a little bit late.
Oh, no!
Pushing it a bit fine.
If I'm honest, I realized how
little I knew about this country.
I couldn't hide my surprise when I heard
we could take a high speed
train to get to Rabat.
And what a service!
I swear they're not making train stations,
they're making airports here!
Look at that!
That's massive!
They're going all out on the architecture!
The journey from Casablanca to Rabat was
only 45 minutes,
and that was enough to see a huge
difference between the two cities.
Rabat is the capital of the country.
The quality of the greenery and these palm
trees are just there to remind us,
we are officially in holiday mode.
I was hoping on our trip we
would go somewhere like this.
Oh, that's beautiful!
What did you think of your room?
This is absolutely beautiful!
It's like a princess castle, isn't it?
I'm in love with my blue bath.
Yeah, that's kind of cool!
Just don't get the feet
in that will cost you extra!
I think we need to get our bearings.
- Yeah.
To kind of understand the city a bit more.
Yeah, I was watching
loads of videos online.
They were saying it's like
Morocco's Los Angeles.
I feel like we need to get out there
and kind of do a bit more of a tour.
- Yeah.
That sounds really good yeah.
I think if we walk,
we'll be on the ground.
We'll be able to interact with people
and then we'll really get
to understand what's going on.
- Okay, I'm up for it!
Let's go!
So you've got to lift and in.
See, when it comes to Alex having a go,
I become the professional.
In fact, there are many
ways to explore a city.
Our walking tour turned into a water tour.
Rabat j'adore
I could just lay down on this boat
and enjoy the gentle sound of the paddles.
The music in the distance.
Voices of locals swimming
and fishing around.
It's pure meditation.
I think sometimes when Alex and I are
together, we can bring out the kid
in each other and get quite competitive.
There were some adults getting
involved too, I promise!
I win!
I win!
After that little racing appetizer, we
felt it necessary to step things up a bit.
We looked up things to do on Tripadvisor,
and we ended up at one of the most
famous go-karting tracks in Morocco.
It's going to be fun!
You're going down Kate!
- I think you're going down!
Look at the three steps there.
And I'm going to be up on that top,
and you're going to be bowing down!
You wish, you wish!
- Hello.
- Hey.
Welcome to VGK.
VGK is the first and the historical,
karting circuit in Morocco.
Yes.
We are between Casablanca and Rabat.
we have a one kilometer circuit.
You're welcome to try and have
a drive test if you want.
- Yes.
That would be great, thank you.
- So follow me.
Follow me.
You ready to lose?
Right, let's up the ante.
Whoever loses has to run the whole
truck with their helmet on.
Okay.
You up for that?
Yep!
Okay.
Three. Two.
One.
He's so far behind me!
Okay.
You won.
Fair and square.
I thought I was going to get you
on that last corner but you nailed it!
I know!
Sorry, then now that means
you have to do the running!
- Okay Keep your hat on!
- I'm going to go, I'll see you in a bit!
- See you!
Let's take the racing line.
So I have to go as little as possible.
Dear oh dear!
This is fun.
Well done Allie!
He looks so small!
After that rather humbling loss,
I decided we needed to settle the score.
I learned Morocco is a massive golfing
destination and so many courses
are present in the Kingdom.
So we decided to arrange a golf
lesson with Golf Master Ali.
This is not just any golf course.
This is the Royal Golf Dar es Salam.
Built by His late Majesty King Hassan II.
- Hello!
Hey!
- Welcome to Dar es Salam.
- Thank you.
Alex.
- My name is Ali.
- Kate.
- Nice to meet you.
Did you ever play golf?
We've only ever played mini golf.
So, I don't know how this is going to go!
- It's okay.
This golf course, it's about the 25th
best golf course in the world.
- Wow!
Absolutely.
- I feel very privileged to be here then.
My dream is one day when I say Morocco,
people say "oh, the golf courses." Yeah.
- and it's certainly
dream of all Moroccans.
And the head of that is
the King of Morocco.
His dream is to make the people happy.
And you see all the green area?
You see Rabat is all green.
- Yeah.
- It's the sewage water being treated.
Everything, it's been
treated by that water.
Now, come please.
Three. Two.
One.
Okay.
Go ahead.
Oh, yeah.
- Yeah.
- Oh, that was not bad!
Not bad at all!
Forward motion!
Easy.
Just easy.
Whoa!
- That's not bad!
That's not too bad?
Into the tree!
Final shot.
Okay?
If I pop this, you have to carry
all the crew's equipment back, okay?
Okay, deal.
- Yeah?
Hey!
Why am I cheering?
Go get that stuff!
Off you go!
How's it going?
Good.
Is that heavy enough?
- Do you need a hand?
- It's quite heavy actually!
Oh, sorry.
See you!
After a fascinating rematch,
it was time to pick up our car
and head to our next city.
Fez.
I can't deny it.
Road tripping still holds
so much excitement for me.
You get to see a whole
new side to a country.
Oh, yeah.
This is definitely your thing Kate!
That's quite some architecture, isn't it?
Is there a big drop down there or not?
Yeah, Looks pretty decent.
Yeah.
You need to pay the highway, the toll.
Little did we know that the crew had more
in store for us than just
the pleasant scenery.
Are you on the speaker Alex?
Yes.
On speaker.
So it's game time now.
It's game time.
Game time!
Well I'm certainly getting nervous now!
So you have to say in French, a sentence.
- Oui.
"The pen is on the table and we
are going to Fez." Oh, okay.
The pen..
And remember you cannot search
on the internet, by the way.
We can see you on camera!
And you have ten minutes.
Ten minutes!
Oh dear!
This is stressing me out!
Do you know where the minibus went?
- I have no clue where the minibus went!
Let me get back to the maps.
Go, continue around that way.
Hey Matt.
So you do you want
to know know what it is?
Yes, please!
Bonjour.
I need you to translate something for me.
But I don't speak French very well.
Time is up.
Did you find the answer?
- Oui oui.
- Possible. Le stylo est sur la table.
Et nous allons partir à Fez.
Yeah.
We got there!
After a rather stressful game time,
we woke up refreshed and headed
straight to the heart to Fez.
The medina.
Wow! This is what everyone's
been telling us about!
It's incredible.
- And I thought those things were painted.
- Yeah.
But they're tiles, aren't they?
That's their handcrafted goods.
Oh, I love that there!
Look at the shutters, this is beautiful!
Fez is the oldest of Morocco's imperial
cities
and it's certainly very impressive.
We had heard it was renowned
for its history of craftsmanship.
So we set out on a shopping extravaganza
to take in the sights and sounds.
That doorway almost looks like a keyhole.
Oh, this is cool, because
we're outside with the trees!
Nice awnings.
Oh, we haven't seen these before.
Yeah, these are beautiful!
The black with the terracotta.
Yeah.
Salam.
- Salam.
I've never seen the terracotta
with the black before.
- Is that local to here or?
- Local work in Fez.
- I burn, the wood of cedar.
- Yep.
And it gives a resin.
Oh, wow!
Yeah.
When you put the water in,
it gives the taste.
Yeah.
Wow.
That's amazing!
Oh, yeah.
You can really smell it.
When I am very strong, I work very hard!
- Yeah.
It's beautiful.
I think we're missing a great opportunity
to get ourselves I'll treat you to a pair,
and maybe you can treat me to a pair.
And every time you visit,
you have to wear the slippers.
So what I pick for you is for you.
Okay.
What I pick for you, is for you.
Too small?
Too small, too small!
Anything bigger?
Try them on.
- How are these ones?
Yeah, I think they're the ones.
They're colorful. They're you.
I can see you wearing them
when you come visit me.
I feel like I'm wearing banana skins.
Yes!
Fez Medina, known as Fez El Bali,
is the oldest and largest Medina in
Morocco, dating back to the ninth century.
It is also a Unesco World Heritage Site
and home to the world's oldest university.
To learn more about our slippers,
we headed to where their journey begins.
The Chouara Tannery.
This is the largest and the biggest
tannery in all of North Africa
Wow!
It's never been restored,
never been changed.
There is over 950 families working here.
Generation to generation.
From father to the son.
So this is the same, its always been..
All the same, from the 14th century.
Always the same way.
For example, the red, poppy flower.
- Poppy flower?
- Yeah.
Brown.
Cedar wood.
So this is camel leather.
See how it's light please?
So light.
Oh yeah.
Very light.
Yeah.
This is what I got back from England.
They're heavy but they're quality,
It's heavy and smelly.
It's a cow leather.
Sheep is cheap.
Sheep is cheap!
Yes.
Baby goats.
Baby goats.
- That's like a chamois leather.
- It's very thin.
And are other leathers that are produced
here, are they used around the world
or are they mainly used here?
Well here we are only for the big
brands, we sell to Italy.
We sell for all the brands here.
- That must make you feel very proud.
- Yeah.
We are unique, you know,
because we work with the natural product,
we don't work with the chemicals.
So this is the only place in the world.
On our way to lunch,
we bumped into an American couple
who were on their honeymoon.
We hit it off instantly,
so we invited them to join us.
We had heard the views in Fez are
spectacular, so we started looking
for the best rooftops in the city.
We were not disappointed
when we found Dar Rafti.
Yeah.
How did you decide on Morocco?
We both really wanted to go
to Spain, in the past.
It was like on both of our lists.
Yeah.
And then we also wanted
to go somewhere that
we heard a lot of interesting,
cool things about.
But maybe, you know,
we haven't been to before either.
So we read a lot of social media
posts about Morocco
and how beautiful it is.
And, we came and it was right.
I mean, everyone's just walking
in the streets down below
and how friendly everyone is.
- I don't know, I really like being able to..
Today we woke up.
We had breakfast at our riad,
and then, we just decided to wander.
Walk around the streets
with no real plan, just to kind of see..
Did you have a path planned?
Did you just let yourself go?
Because I was like, "Alex, don't leave me!"
I don't have my phone on me.
There were a couple times where
we turned a corner
and I'd be like, wait a second!
Oh my god, could you imagine?
Well thankfully you're
quite brightly colored!
Yeah, he's a big.
After a day of walking,
we were pretty exhausted,
so we took full advantage
of the production crew's dinner and drinks
treat at another luxurious rooftop spot.
I think the location
of this is just perfect, isn't it?
To be able to sit over
and see out where we've been today.
- So special.
- And just take it all in.
The other thing that's been running
through our whole trip,
other than food and family and meeting
all these lovely people, is color.
And like it was I think it was you
who first commented and we arrived and it
was blue taxis instead of red taxis.
Yes!
And and have you noticed
we're back to red here in Fez?
Back to red.
I was thinking maybe yellow but no.
And the green roofs, and the tiles.
Yes, more green roofs.
And where we are going
tomorrow, Chefchaouen.
- The blue city.
- Hisham said that's the blue city.
- The guy we met at the train station.
- Yeah, I'm looking forward to that.
- You got a blue outfit?
- I've got a blue outfit.
J'adore Fez.
Salut, on to the blue.
On to Chefchaouen.
Now, with only a few days left on our
journey, we headed to our penultimate
destination, the infamous
blue city of Morocco.
Chefchaouen.
We've got quite a while to go.
- Yeah, ages to go.
- I think we need some snacks.
- A nice little service station.
- Right next to a tractor.
A blue tractor!
Isn't that funny.
All the tractors at home,
I feel like are green and yellow.
In the middle of nowhere.
But it's beautiful, isn't it?
Look at this view!
Next up Chefchaouen.
Here we come!
The crew quickly assigned us the mission
of discovering why and how
this city became entirely blue.
There's certainly no resting
whilst hosting The Wanderer.
Salam.
Do you speak any English?
We're just wondering, why is it blue here?
Historically from Moriscos,
coming from Spain.
Well, are we going left or right?
Woah! We are definitely going left!
Oh my word!
It feels like a set, doesn't it?
It does!
Right, stand there.
Pass me my phone.
That's on brand, isn't it, blue steel.
Salam.
Would you be able to tell us
a bit of the history of the blue?
It's the Jewish, the Jewish people.
- Yes, so we're creating
a travel guide with Tripadvisor.
- Tripadvisor?
I love Tripadvisor!
- Oh you do?
- Yes, I love Tripadvisor!
The day before yesterday I was in Fez
looking for a place to eat
and I found it by Tripadvisor.
Nice!
That's what we like to hear.
Yes, and I love it.
It was exactly what I was looking for.
Yeah, I feel like you
could easily get lost.
Today I came with a guide because
I couldn't find this place.
And then my guide is over there, Mohammed.
This guy is very, very nice.
If you come to Morocco,
please, contact this guy.
Hi lovely to meet you.
Where does the blue come from?
The blue come from the Jewish people.
Actually, back in the day,
the Jewish people used to live here.
And the people who decided
to turn all these walls blue.
Some people, they say
because the blue was the color of the sky,
and the color of the sea.
That way that keeps them close to heaven.
Some other people, they say because
of the mosquitoes, the blue.
It takes the mosquitoes off.
So these are the two ideas,
but there's nothing confirming them.
That is beautiful.
And is it a paint or is it dye?
It's a stone, you know.
- Or something natural?
Yeah.
It's from something natural.
It's a stone, you know, it's a clay.
- It's beautiful!
Do you have any other recommendations?
We're going to Tangier next.
I would like to recommend you visit
in Tangier, Cap Spartel, Casbah,
The old Medina and the seaside areas.
You can enjoy it there!
- We'll be making sure we tick those off.
Thank you so much.
Thank you so much, great to meet you.
After a long day of discovering
Chefchaouen, we checked into our beautiful
hotel on the mountain top and kicked out
the crew so we could get some peace
and quiet away from game times.
The last day of our trip was finally here,
and with it came the anticipation
of our final destination, Tangier.
We had seen so much already,
yet the allure of Tangier's vibrant
streets and rich history filled us
with excitement for one last adventure.
We headed straight to the Casbah,
the oldest part of Tangier.
It's so lovely down here!
I love how all of their electrical
meters, there's like art.
- Yeah.
Oh, wow! That's pretty!
Wow!
This is so cool!
Instead of just having
their electrical box out.
They've added art to
give it a bit of artistic flair.
These two are so cute.
They're like holding hands!
Can you see that it's got a tag.
It's the same person.
Punksy.
This is so cool!
I'm enjoying how many cafes they are.
This has definitely got a cool feel to it.
Yeah!
Oh, these are the people
that have been here.
Anthony Bourdain.
Café Baba, Parts Unknown, Tangier.
For 83 years, Café Baba has perched above
Tangier's medina and served pretty much
every celebrity under the sun,
from the Kings of both Spain and Sweden
to the Rolling Stones and Patti Smith,
and even former Secretary
to the United Nations Kofi Annan.
That's some pretty tough
act to follow if you ask me.
Shall we go right?
Yeah.
I'm loving this down here.
It feels really creative.
Salam labassa!
- Hello!
You know what it means, Salam?
Yes.
Hello.
It means peace.
Oh, peace?
That's what it means, Salam.
It's peace and is the best word
that we use in our country.
Oh, that's nice!
We've been walking a lot today,
and we're getting a bit hungry.
Is there anywhere you can recommend
for us to eat? Any foods we should try?
Okay.
My friend.
Tangier is full of restaurants.
Do you have a local
sweet we need to try?
Okay okay.
Okay.
I'll give you the name, it's easy to arrive there.
This is going to be a hard choice.
Look at these in boxes.
What are you thinking?
Maybe two to three each?
- Yeah.
And then we can decide
who picks the best one.
Okay, go on.
Is that all of the ones you chose?
Yeah, they look amazing
They look absolutely amazing.
How much is that?
It's fifteen dirhams.
- Fifteen dirhams.
Perfect.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
We've got a feast.
Look at these.
- Feast on our hands.
They look great don't they.
So should we start with this one.
Yeah.
That's what our friend
in the market told us about.
Briwat.
yeah, cheers!
It's good isn't it?
It's like sweet, honey.
Crispy layers.
Kind of savory as well.
It's like cinnamon do you think?
Cheers.
This is definitely a hot spot.
Yeah, it looks like it, doesn't it?
This is the most north
westerly point of Africa.
Oh, I should have known that!
Where the Atlantic meets
the Mediterranean Ocean.
Ah!
- Yeah.
All right.
We've been walking for quite a while now.
I think we need to sit down.
Maybe finish at the beach.
Yeah.
Dip our toes in the sea.
Yeah.
See if the sunset comes through for us.
- Hopefully have a good sunset tonight!
It'll be a nice way to end our trip.
Yeah let's do it!
Warm or cold, what do you reckon?
Hold on, let's do the game where you've
got to see who can be hit the last.
Okay.
How long does this take?
Well, we step forward after every one.
Okay.
All right, all right, take a step.
It's not too chilly actually, is it?
It's quite nice!
No, it's a little chilly!
You got it!
You got it!
In the net.
Very distinguished gentleman.
He's very upright.
Isn't he?
Having a little game of volleyball was
nice to finish off the trip.
I know, I enjoyed that.
That was so funny!
We both decked it as well!
Yeah, I think they probably just
stopped counting points at that point.
Yeah, maybe that one,
we win fair and square.
Last challenge of the trip.
Even Stevens.
- Even Stevens.
That's a nice way to go, hey?
We couldn't believe it.
The trip had finally come to a momentous
end, and it was time
to head to the airport and go home.
Well done Al.
Well done Kate.
It's been a really good trip,
really enjoyed it.
Have you?
Really enjoyed it!
I'm going to be crying
on camera in a minute!
- Maybe that's what they wanted.
- Yeah, probably!
Maybe you should
shed a little tear there Kate.
But we really have made so many friends,
And the whole crew though,
have just been so fun and amazing.
Even if they've set us some
- Crazy challenges!
Right, I think we're nearly there.
Shall we turn the GoPros off?
- Yeah, lets do it.
Bye guys!
- Bye!
