[indistinct chattering]
[Lotta's mom] It's really incredible
that you took on your professor
all by yourself.
Mm. Respect.
Thanks. I was very lucky.
I got help from Lotta and everyone.
You're a good friend.
Sis, it looks like our detective club
in grade school paid off.
- [Lotta laughs]
- Do you know Professor Lorenz?
You cross paths
with everyone at the top level.
- Yeah! Small world, right?
- You do research as well?
Well, I'd be bored to death
if I had to watch cell cultures by myself
all day, but, um
How come?
I have more of a sense for talent.
I support visions
like how Charlotte found Jasper
and all his great Huntington's research.
- I like to try to help out whenever I can.
- [Baron chuckles]
You got that from your mother.
But you got your instincts from me.
I've been researching the applications of
ultrasound-based brain-computer interfaces
as well as other body regions
with a lot of nerve endings.
- Interesting.
- Mm-hmm, yeah.
Mia, where do you see yourself
five years from now?
I don't know where
I see myself in five days.
On a beach, I guess.
[Ole laughs] Beach.
How do you feel about Homo Deus?
Genetically bolstering immune systems
is something we should look at,
but Lorenz
lacks the moral compass to do so.
Uh, yeah. [laughs]
I'm studying self-illuminating palm trees.
You plant them,
and they'll replace our street lights,
and that would effectively reduce
Europe's annual energy consumption
by 35 terawatt-hours.
It looks nicer than those ugly steel poles
that you have everywhere right now.
- "The Eco Route." What a good name.
- [Lotta chuckles]
Now talk about a radical idea, Wolfi, hmm?
That's Dad's investment motto.
Well, we'll be hosting a little
founders' gala this weekend at our home.
Once again.
A few Nobel Prize winners,
new ideas for the future,
and the neighbors.
- Come stop by.
- Thank you.
Ole should come with you.
Oh! [laughs]
Let me check my schedule first.
- I'll come.
- Mia?
[brooding music playing]
Um, thank you for the invitation,
but I've had enough
of Nobel Prize winners.
[high-pitched sound]
- [man] What's your name?
- Emma.
Emma. Um, Mia.
[Ole] The food. [chuckles]
A society is only as strong
as its weakest link.
To our family and to strengthening.
[Lotta's mom] To our family.
[Lotta] And our friends.
[echoing voices]
[high-pitched sound]
[Mia] Excuse me.
[brooding music intensifies]
[music builds to crescendo]
[exhales sharply]
This is the ladies' room.
[Mia grunts]
[both breathe heavily]
I missed you so much.
[theme music playing]
[music fades]
I thought you went to the bathroom
to wait for me just like last time.
What?
You haven't sent photos for me either.
Is there something wrong?
You've been acting strange all night.
Doesn't matter though.
Uh [chuckles]
- Do your parents know what we're doing?
- Huh? No.
You told me before
you didn't want Lotta to know.
- You change your mind yet?
- No, no. I, um, just wanted to check.
[Uli chuckles]
We should go, okay?
So when can I see you?
You look like
you could use some fun tonight.
[Mia chuckles]
I'll call you, okay?
[breathes deeply]
[upbeat music playing muffled]
I know Lotta's father.
He got me my scholarship here.
He took care of things,
got them to make an exception for me.
He got me out of Indonesia.
You don't have to help me. It's okay.
That's not what I'm saying.
What's the plan?
I don't know yet.
I could talk to Lotta.
And tell her her dad's a kidnapper
without even being sure about it?
What if Lorenz is lying to you?
She'd do anything to save her own ass.
She was tied up in the van with me.
I know she was.
Maybe that was just
one of your hallucinations.
It isn't. Lorenz wants something.
If it was truly Lotta's dad behind this,
then I'm gonna prove it.
I'm gonna talk to her again tomorrow.
Okay.
- I'll come with.
- [Mia sighs]
[breathes deeply]
I really need to go home.
I'll come with?
I need more time for that.
I thought that might be the case.
But there's no harm in trying, huh?
Mm-hmm.
[kisses]
[emotional music playing]
- [Mia's grandma] Good morning, bebis.
- [approaching footsteps]
I thought we'd do something special
for the first day of summer vacation.
Really?
- [speaking indistinctly, distorted]
- [Mia] What?
Grandma, what?
Grandma?
I can't understand you.
Grandma, I can't understand.
Grandma! Grandma! Grandma!
Grandma!
[panting]
[sobs]
FOR MY BEBIS
[sobs]
Hey.
[exhales sharply]
Did you have a nightmare?
[sobs]
I'm forgetting my grandma.
[breathes deeply]
I can't remember her voice anymore.
I can't
[sobs]
What's happening to me?
[sniffles]
[Chen-Lu softly singing in Mandarin]
[singing continues]
[in English] Hey, tomorrow
your memory could return like a cloud.
Boom!
And if it doesn't?
Then you should
go get looked at by a doctor again.
Or talk to your therapist some more.
Yeah, that might help.
[sighs] Thank you, Chen-Lu.
[pensive music playing]
I've spoken with my colleagues.
Do you know what a dissociative fugue is?
No. [clears throat]
Okay, well, in some extreme cases,
the subject often takes on
a new identity all the time.
They'll go run away
and live somewhere completely new.
It could be for weeks, even months,
with a new personality,
but they are completely functional.
Then, after a while, they go back again.
And then when they return,
they can't remember anything.
- Everything that happened is gone.
- Is it treatable?
Psychotherapy can help fill things in
and get you started remembering,
put the pieces of the puzzle
back together.
And what
what do you think caused all this?
People with dissociative fugue
are escaping
from extreme situations in most cases.
Sometimes life-threatening situations
they can't get away from.
It's your body
triggering a flight response
or rather your mind's way.
[exhales sharply]
I'm starting to forget other things too.
Things that that make up who I am.
Where I grew up, my grandma.
I'm I feel like
I'm forgetting who I used to be.
- "Dissociative" what?
- Fugue.
Your subconscious flight instinct
didn't take you very far.
What was I even fleeing from
in the first place?
Was it Niklas?
So boring you ran away?
He didn't leave much of an impression.
Jasper, I'm not in the mood.
Some sympathy right now would be nice.
Okay. Sorry.
- Forget I said anything.
- [chuckles]
You're such an idiot.
[indistinct chattering]
This discussion is confidential.
I tell him everything later anyway.
Fun playing in the little league?
Better than getting disqualified,
so, yeah.
Baron von Fürstenberg
doesn't seem like a guy who would do this.
Oh, did you Google him?
He's got good reviews?
[sighs] Why would he kidnap us?
Well, he took me to suggest a deal.
A bit dramatic for that.
Why couldn't he just call you?
[scoffs]
He wanted to ensure
I couldn't turn him down.
And me?
What happened to me?
Von Fürstenberg,
Wolfgang,
he financed everything I did
for many years, all of my research.
He knows about Homo Deus,
your immune system.
The project was a success
that it really worked.
As a medical case,
you became of great interest
for all his other projects.
What other projects?
It's not just me he financed.
Yeah, and?
Everyone knows he invests in science.
This isn't like your amateur research.
Agreements were always spoken.
That means no emails or financial records
with his name on them.
No evidence.
I know, but Wolfgang
always kept notes of everything we said.
They're handwritten
in a leather-bound red notebook.
If you wanna get
to the bottom of your memory loss,
then that book is your best chance.
I thought you didn't wanna help anyone
except for yourself.
I'm not helping you.
I'm gonna need this book
to prove that
he's really the one behind this.
So my sentence gets shortened.
That means that we're a team.
Partners?
You screw me over, you're dead.
I'm okay with that.
Where's this book?
Wolfgang likes to work at home
in his upstairs office.
I would look there first.
[Mia] Think she's telling the truth?
I don't know why,
but yeah. I believe what she said.
That book, I have to find it.
Yeah, how?
Ask Lotta if she'll let you in
and help you look for it?
I know someone else who might let me in.
- Hmm?
- Um, Lotta's brother.
I, uh I had a thing with him,
I think.
I wasn't faithful either.
Well, then [clears throat]
["Killer Kid" by Angela Aux
playing on the radio]
[music continues muffled]
[music continues clearly]
Can you come up for a sec?
[door opens]
[sighs] Okay.
How was I?
- What?
- [Mia] How was I the last three months?
You said that I was different somehow.
And Uli can't notice something's off,
or else he won't let me
poke around his dad's office.
You were a little more laid back.
- I always am.
- [Jasper scoffs]
More open.
You always looked for physical contact
whenever we'd talk.
Like what?
Like this.
And what else?
[Jasper exhales]
You put
your hand on my butt like this
when we walked together.
[moaning]
Thanks, that was very helpful.
Should I go?
[exhales sharply]
- Good luck.
- Thank you.
Be careful, okay?
Of course.
WILL YOU SEND ME A GOODNIGHT SELFIE?
NEW CONTAC
FIRST NAME
ULI
HOW ABOU
YOU TAKE THE PHOTO YOURSELF TOMORROW?
[muffled groaning, screaming]
[sighs]
[bike lock clicks]
Ooh la la! Do you have a date?
No. I just wanted
to ditch the pity-party clothes
and get back into the world.
Can you wait a minute? I can come with.
I wanna catch up with you.
I I'm afraid I have plans.
So next time, huh?
Okay, but soon.
Have a blast, you sexy thing!
[chuckles]
[door opens]
[pensive music playing]
[button clicks]
[gate motor whirring]
Hey, sunshine.
You good?
Yeah. You?
Always.
[Mia exhales sharply]
- Hey.
- [kisses]
So, welcome to our humble abode.
Damn.
You get used to it.
You guys don't lack self-confidence,
do you?
No.
[chuckles] Why should we be humble?
You want a drink?
Um, since you finally came over,
we should celebrate.
- Sure.
- Yeah?
Know how to use one of these?
Yeah.
We've all been going hunting together
since we were kids.
To be completely honest,
I suck at shooting. [chuckles]
Lotta's the best in the family.
Well, after my father.
We got some clay pigeons
if you wanna give it a try.
Next time, sure.
Okay.
What about my drink?
Where is your drink?
Right.
[brooding music playing]
- Here.
- Thanks.
Cheers.
So all your servants
live in that place, huh?
[Uli] It's an old brickyard.
It's on the verge of collapsing.
I'd rather show you my room instead.
[both chuckle]
[brooding music continues]
Mm-hmm.
Where are you going?
- Show me around a little.
- Okay.
The only room upstairs really
is just my parents' bedroom.
[Mia] And what's behind this door?
Wow.
That's a lot of books.
Yeah.
I've already suggested to him
that he could just scan 'em all
and put a fitness studio here instead.
Well, I think books are sexy.
Okay.
Oh, hey. That's my father's office.
- We're not allowed to go in there.
- Oh, why not?
Well, because it's an office,
and we need a playroom, that's why.
You're not a kid anymore, Uli.
You wanna do something that's forbidden,
don't you?
Not if my father's the one who forbade it.
Sorry.
Hey, but there are
lots of other forbidden things.
Yeah.
WHEN TIMER ENDS
STAR
[exhales sharply]
Okay.
[alarm ringing]
Mmm. Hold on. Wait.
Oh fuck!
Totally forgot.
I have to go feed my hamster, Willi,
his lunch.
- [scoffs] What? Now?
- Look, I'm so sorry.
I'll call you though.
[indistinct chattering]
Jasper?
So do you have a suit?
There's been a change of plans.
This might be casting pearls before swine.
You want your red book?
I'll need a ball gown to get it.
In this case, it's charity.
For the book.
[upbeat orchestral music playing]
[Mia] Thanks.
Thank you.
Whoa. You dressed up like an adult.
[laughs] You look gorgeous.
Thanks.
They're looking at you.
Yeah, because they think
you're my girlfriend.
Well, I am somehow.
Thanks for doing this with me.
This can't be easy for you.
It never was.
What the hell
do you think you're doing here?
Do I know you?
I hope you do.
Vera.
Uli's girlfriend.
Forgive me. Hi, Vera.
Cut it out with this act.
I know what's been going on.
At least one of us does.
Mia, what are you doing here?
It's okay.
- Your father said I should come.
- But you said that you weren't coming.
- Yeah.
- You've been in contact?
- It was a family dinner. Hey, come on.
- [Lotta] Hi. Good to see you.
This is Niklas, my boyfriend.
Thought you didn't wanna come.
What the fuck, Lotta?
I understand how weird this is for you
since you forgot everything,
but you've been cool with this.
I didn't know that you were gonna be here.
Surprise.
I'm gonna look around.
Hey, just give her a minute.
- Shit.
- I guess she wasn't really lying, was she?
No.
Hey! And a wonderful evening to you all.
[chuckles]
- Hi.
- Hi.
Here. Let's go.
Okay.
[tense music playing]
Mia! You decided to come.
- Mm. Wonderful.
- Yeah, change of heart, you know?
Where are you going?
Just looking for the bathroom.
- It's downstairs.
- There's someone in it.
It's a bit urgent.
It's upstairs. Second door on the left.
Ah. Thanks.
[indistinct chattering]
[tense music playing]
[door handle rattling]
[Vera] Why are you dragging me up here?
[Uli] Relax, baby. Relax.
You okay to walk in those shoes?
[Vera] Of course I am. I'm fine.
[Uli] Or do you want my hand?
[approaching footsteps]
[Uli] Smile a little. It's really cool.
You'll see, okay?
- I promise.
- [Vera exhales sharply]
[Uli] There we go.
Come on.
Gonna read me a story here or what?
Um, no.
Only people in the circle of trust
are allowed here. You should feel honored.
Is this your weird way
of apologizing to me?
[Uli] I'm sorry, but I didn't know
that she was coming, okay?
Not for that!
For having a thing with her at all!
[Uli] We already cleared that up.
[Vera] Yeah,
before you invited her to the party.
I didn't invite her to the party,
my father did, okay?
- I don't give a crap about her.
- [Vera scoffs]
[Uli] Come here. Come.
What else do I have to do
for you to forgive me?
You could take me seriously.
Oh, come on. I do that.
You're so sexy when you're angry.
- Uli!
- Hey.
[Vera] You just don't get it, do you?
What? What what do you
wanna hear from me? I'm sorry.
I told you I'm sorry.
[Vera] Just forget about it.
[sighs] Just forget it.
[Uli] Please just don't go.
[door closes]
Stop being such a drama queen.
You're so annoying, you know that?
It's unbelievable.
LORD OF THE RINGS
COMMENTARY
[tense music playing]
[music intensifies]
MED STUDEN
DISSOCIATIVE FUGUE
They're confidential notes.
Yeah, about me.
[door opens]
[exhales sharply]
[phone beeps]
Sweetheart, how are you now?
It'd be nice if you came.
The kids are both here.
We miss you.
[sighs] Listen, Bernadette,
everyone is asking where my wife is.
Everyone here loves you.
They're all a few glasses in.
Nobody'll notice.
Yes.
- Think about it.
- [phone beeps]
[soft music playing]
Mia, may I introduce you
to Mr. and Mrs. Binder?
- Um
- Hello.
- How are you?
- [Mia] Nice to meet you.
- Good evening.
- The Binders own a house on Gran Canaria.
I told them about you.
They would love to let you stay there
for a few weeks.
You'd be able to go to the beach
and clear your head
so you can come up with radical ideas
and think about your future in science.
Today is about 70 degrees in January.
It took a lot of civic courage
to expose the professor.
Thank you.
Feel free to bring other students too.
We have plenty of room.
[Mr. Binder]
Carlos can pick them up from the airport.
[Mrs. Binder] Yes, definitely.
We plan on retiring there in a few years.
[shrill sound]
You make sure
she never goes into a laboratory again.
Yes, you have my word.
- [shrill sound]
- [muffled screaming]
- Sorry. Your your nose is bleeding.
- [Mia gasps]
Hey.
- Everything okay?
- Can we go?
What's wrong?
You get the book?
Wait.
[approaching vehicle]
Your keys.
The man at the lake who took me
- Mm-hmm.
- he was at the party.
I remember now.
He's the journalist
I gave the data to, Jasper.
What?
And my therapist,
I found her notes on me in that room.
It's all true.
Lotta's father did this to me.
And now?
We're gonna find out
what that bastard did to me.
What?
[approaching footsteps]
[tense music grows to crescendo]
Hello.
[theme music playing]
[music fades]
