I'm gonna be your dorm counselor!
Happy to have you.
And the space you'll give us.
I see a lot of red flags.
This is psycho!
What're you talking about?
That was awesome.
Summer is a time for kids to get great
at hockey without school
gettin' in the way.
You can't win summer.
You seem very obsessed with this season.
Why don't you let me run this place?
Hockey's not really my thing.
I'm only here 'cause
my dad makes me come.
Shoot it!
Come on, you're better than that.
Not sure I am, Dad.
The Coach Classic is a game
that we play every year,
where the kids go up
against the coaches.
And for me, it defines our commitment
to excellence here at EPIC.
Every coach played
college or pro hockey.
You wanna be a better player?
Play a better player.
Steel sharpens steel.
The kids love it.
For a lot of them this is the
best night of the summer.
But everything the kids get,
they gotta earn.
This is real smash mouth hockey.
Ah! The Coach Classic! I love it.
That game is tomorrow night, all right?
Now, I've seen some pretty stellar
talent here the last few weeks.
Little afraid you guys might give
the coaches a run for their money.
Who wants in?
Everybody wants in! That's good.
Unfortunately, only ten kids get
to play, selected at random.
Now, if you are one of the lucky ones,
tomorrow morning when you wake up,
and you open up your door,
you're gonna find
a golden jersey with your name on it.
It's like Christmas if you come
from a very violent family.
Take a look.
Adults crushing children.
How is this even legal?
If I get picked for this, remember
me fondly. Tell my story.
Man, who is that kid?
He's incredible. He
just smoked everyone.
Yeah.
Come on, now. Let's go.
Wait. Uh
See you later.
Hey!
That was you in that video.
Not anymore. Can I have my ball back?
I looked you up online.
You were ranked number three
in the country for your age.
They were saying you could be
good enough to play in the NHL.
Thanks for letting me know.
I'll have to check that out.
What, so you don't wanna talk about it?
You don't wanna hear it.
I mean you're at hockey camp.
You love hockey. You don't wanna
hear how it can mess you up.
Maybe I do wanna hear it.
Okay, you wanna hear about how
all the pressure that my dad put on me
made me choke in the biggest game
of my life and score on my own goal?
Or do you wanna hear about
how I had a meltdown
and now I have a glitch in
my shot that won't go away?
You wanna hear that one?
I'm I'm really sorry.
I'm over it.
- Maybe I can help. 'Cause I
- No, you can't!
You all come from around the country
to train with my dad and be the best.
Well, congrats, on being a part of EPIC,
the Elite Performance Ice Center.
I really hope that works out for you.
Now can I have my ball back?
Mail call!
Package day, everybody!
Oh! That's for me.
Where are mine? Oh! Me.
Oh, man. I hope it's
- Candy!
- Candy, yeah, I'll take it!
Dude, you didn't even unwrap it.
There was no time!
That is gross.
Ah, my moms are so thoughtful.
They sent me your four
basic candy groups.
You got your caramels,
your hard candies,
your chocolates, and your chews!
Ah! And fuzzy slippers
for chilly nights.
And they cut out an article
from our hometown newspaper.
What? Val Lundgren's retiring?
They don't make school board
treasurers like her anymore,
I'll tell you that much.
- Here's yours, Sof.
- Thanks.
I could really go for
chocolate right now.
Or a PSAT prep book.
Ladies and gentlemen, my parents.
- Oh, thanks.
- Hey!
The Coach Classic's tomorrow.
Let's all get some sleep.
And just so you know,
candy is against the rules.
Although what I have not seen,
I know nothing about. So, hmm, okay.
Dude, the coaches are going to destroy.
I don't know about that one.
There's some great kids out there.
I mean you saw my roommate, Lawrence.
He told me his dad took a million dollar
insurance policy out on his ankles.
I've seen the plaque.
Kids have never won.
First time for everything.
Care to make it interesting?
I'll bet a candy bar the coaches win.
Okay, but you gotta give me odds.
The coaches are too good.
Three to one?
- You guys bettin' on the game?
- Yup.
I want in.
One bar on the coaches.
Yeah, you could take
the safe bet on the coaches,
or you could take the kids
at ten to one odds.
But the kids will never win.
Okay, so if they lose, you lose
what? One measly candy bar?
But if they win, ten delicious
candy bars are all yours.
Chocolate, caramel, maybe some
nougat in there. You like nougat?
I do like nougat. You know what? I'm in.
You've made the right choice.
Tell your friends.
What just happened?
I learned sports betting from my dad.
I got curious when I heard
him yelling from the shed.
So, I have an idea.
My boyfriend in dorm C said
the whole camp has candy now.
Wait, I thought your boyfriend
lived in dorm B.
No, that didn't work out. Still friends.
Oh, that's great.
We can offer crazy odds
on the kids' team winning,
take in a ton of bets.
Once the kids lose, we'll
never have to pay off.
We'll have so much candy! You in?
- I'm in.
- I'm in.
- Nick?
- I can't. My moms sent me this candy.
It'd be like gambling with their love.
Aw, you're such a mama's boy.
- Hey, kid.
- What's up, Mom?
You got a little toothpaste on.
I hope you don't mind that
I didn't send you a care package.
I'm here already, so I thought,
you probably know I care.
All I really care about is
I just have a gold jersey
outside my door tomorrow.
- Yeah, that'd be nice.
- Fingers crossed for you, man.
- Uh, he's going through something.
- Yeah.
- Got it!
- Ugh, Mom!
Would've been there all night.
Good night, I love you!
- Please be a jersey.
- Please, no jersey.
- No!
- Thank you! Yes!
I was planning my second
escape so that's good news.
Look.
At least I didn't get one, right?
I'm not playin' in this game.
Hey! You got picked?
You know I got picked.
I had nothin' to do with it.
- Really?
- Yeah.
There's ten spots in the team,
and your son just happens
to get one of 'em?
Look, it's random, Jace.
The computer does it.
But I won't pretend like I'm not
happy about it. It's good for you.
- For me?
- Yes.
Really, Dad? It's for you.
It's always for you.
It's just I really wanted it.
I know. I really wanted to see you play.
Against former NHL players? When
is that ever gonna happen again?
God, it's such a bummer!
Sadly this one didn't work out.
You want my spot? It's yours.
What? Are you sure?
Mom! Mom, it worked
out in the end. Boom!
Oh, yeah. You're not gonna
play in that game.
What? But you just said
Well, I lied. I mean you're my baby
and you weren't playing in the game.
You're not playing against NHL players.
They get injured all the time.
In the lower body, and upper body.
There's no other parts of the body.
Since day one here, you said that
you weren't gonna be my mom.
And since she's not here,
you can't stop me from playing.
Uh This is an exception.
This is the nightmare,
crazy nightmare clause.
I You're not listening to me.
- Hey, you got five.
- Five.
One on the kids.
Maggie, Mags, baby.
Why bet one to get twenty,
when you can bet five to get a hundred.
- Okay, ten! Now you're talkin', Mags!
- Yes!
Wait, I'm seeing nine candy bars here
and some watermelon body wash.
We accept body wash.
We accept body wash.
Okay, there you go. Have a good day.
I need to talk to you.
Oh, goodie. You know, why don't you
just save up all your complaints and
I'll have Marni schedule
a weekly meeting.
I'm serious. This Coach Classic thing
is a whole other level of insane.
I thought you loved camp traditions.
Why don't you think of it as color war?
Color war is children against children.
Tossing an egg back and forth.
This is like tossing a hand grenade.
I am not having Evan play in that game.
What are you talking about?
Evan's not on the team.
Uh, your son gave him his slot.
He can't take Jace's slot.
That's not how this works.
I'm not having Evan play.
You can't just walk
in here and start to
- Wait. We're arguing for the same thing.
- I don't think so.
Yeah.
- Yeah.
- Oh, I guess we are.
Is this the first time we've ever
agreed on something?
I think it is.
Okay, well, don't worry
about it. I'll fix it.
- I hope I can count on you!
- We want the same thing.
- I know. It feels so weird.
- Okay.
Okay.
Okay, perfect.
Five.
- Five. We got five.
- Five.
One, two, three, four, five.
Seven, eight, nine, ten.
- Ten.
- Ten.
Dump it. Gummy worms. All right.
One, two, three, four, five,
six, seven, eight, nine
Hello, beautiful candy.
When the coaches win,
you will all be ours.
I bet we're all thinking the same thing.
Let's fill a baby pool with Skittles
and go for the swim of a lifetime.
No, that's weird.
In that scenario, do you
eat the Skittles or
I didn't think it through, man.
Take the ride.
I'm just saying', let's taste
a tiny sample of our haul.
We each get one bar. We've earned it.
I found him.
Look, I know you tried to
give away your spot, Jace.
But you were randomly selected
for that. It's not yours to just
He knows.
He broke me.
I'm so sorry, and I promise
I will get better at lying to kids.
Okay, you know what? I may
have had something to do with it.
But I'm not sorry. You need this.
You got a glitch in your shot.
It sucks, but it happens.
Look, you just gotta play
to get past it, buddy.
Just put it in a box. That's
what all the best athletes do.
They put stuff like that in a box
and then forget about
it. They just move on.
In a box? Right, everything
goes in the box.
And then we forget about it.
I know that that game still
messes with you, and it's okay.
You don't think I ever had bad
games, what do you think I did?
Was a box involved?
That's real funny, smart guy.
Look, my point is you gotta
let it go. You gotta move on.
You gotta get back on the ice
and be the player we both know
that you were born to be.
Goosebumps, Dad, really.
But what if I say no?
No. No, you're gonna play
in that game, Jace.
I'm your father. I know
what's best for you.
Yeah, puttin' on
a real parenting clinic.
Guess that's why I'm so healthy.
Hey. Hey.
Yeah, I'm playin' in the Coach Classic.
What's up?
I need my jersey back.
What?
Your Mom had a little chat with
my Dad and now I'm back in.
Really?
Sorry, man.
Hey, what's goin' on?
You won, okay? I'm
not playing in the game.
That's a bummer, I'm sorry.
Can you stop it already? Look, I
know you talked to Coach Cole.
Yes, I did. But he wanted
Jace to play anyway,
and I do feel bad for you even though
I have a bit of concern about that game.
A bit concerned? Mom, you said
if I play in that game I'd die.
Not "die" die. Just destroy
both halves of your body.
Look, I'm not a baby anymore.
You've gotta stop treating me like one.
So much candy.
Oh, my God. What have you guys done?
I remember thinking I'll
just have one, and then
It's just so hard to stop eating candy
when there's more candy.
Come on, get it together!
The game's about to start.
What's that smell?
I just showered, with
the watermelon bath gel.
It's like a picnic all over your body.
All right, okay. We ate most of our
bets but there's still some left.
Just the candy corn.
Why are you eating it?
I don't know. I don't even want it.
Okay, come on, guys.
We made a killing, okay? We're winners!
Let's act like winners and
go and enjoy the game.
Oh, hell, yeah.
Good Lord.
Koob?
Also, hell yeah. Of course, hell yeah.
But what if the coaches lose?
There's no way we can pay off the kids.
- You're right. He's right.
- Oh, he's right?
I am right.
Guys, are you kidding me?
We're talking about the coaches.
They're so much better, okay?
Some of them played in the pros.
They could literally wipe
the ice with the kids.
You're right. She's right.
There's no way they can lose.
That would be like if the US
beat the Soviets in the Olympics.
The US did beat the Soviets.
Okay, well, another example where
that didn't happen, okay?
Let's just go!
Hey.
Hi, folks. Rich Eisen here.
No way! They got Rich Eisen!
He's huge! I love him!
I gotta be honest. I do not
know what I am doing here.
But, they're payin' me a boatload
of cash. So, let's do this thing.
It's the annual Coach Classic and
the coaches are heavily favored,
because they're adults.
Favored.
But you can't count the kids' team out.
These young players look outstanding.
Five seconds into the game
and it's already one-zip.
This could be a long night for the kids.
Yeah!
- Whoo!
- Yes!
Come on, keep your head
in the game. Let's go.
Shoot it. Shoot it!
Let it rip!
Oh! Jace Cole passes
up a wide open shot.
Hey, you got this!
I know you do. Come on.
Oh! The coaches are dominating.
Five to one, and we're only
halfway through the first period.
Who am I talking to? Is this game
being broadcast anywhere?
I don't even see a light on.
Shoot it! Jace, take the shot!
And that's the end of the second period.
Coaches must be very
proud of themselves,
beating children 12 to four.
We don't have to worry.
Hey.
I know I need to back off,
and I will. It's just hard, you know.
You'll understand one day,
it's like you have a little kid,
and they're so helpless,
and then they grow up
and suddenly you're watching them
do stuff, and it's weird. It's like
watching a monkey on a tricycle.
Like, how do they do that, you know?
And I know you can handle more
than I think you can sometimes,
and I probably should've
let you play in this game
'cause it looks really fun.
I was wrong. I'm sorry.
Can you, uh Could you say
that last part again into my phone?
Just so I have that recording.
I was wrong, I'm sorry.
- And Evan is the best.
- And Evan is the best.
Perfect.
Okay, don't be intimidated.
He is so handsome.
Mr. Eisen, this is Nick Ganz.
He is a big, big fan.
- Hey, buddy.
- Big fan. Big fan.
Nick is also a voice personality.
An up and comer of the audio arts.
Tell him about your podcast.
Uh
On vocal rest, I get it. Gotta protect
that instrument of yours, pal.
Well, I know you're very busy.
This was everything Nick imagined.
He's gonna have a big
journal entry tonight.
- See you later, bud.
- Nick, this way.
Bye.
Okay, things are getting
a little lopsided
out here, so the third period,
I'm gonna play with the kids'
team. How's that sound?
- What? No, he can't do that.
- No.
- Can he do that?
- I don't know.
How is that fair? He's not a child.
Now the kids have a chance.
Dad, what are you doing?
I'm gonna get you that shot. Be ready.
Shoot it.
This is weird. It's like number 11
is allergic to shooting.
This is madness.
Hey, you take the next
shot. You got this.
Leave him alone.
Take it. Come on, take it!
Fine!
Shoot it!
Oh, you hate to see that.
Ya happy now?
Jace, wait! Jace!
Tie game. 20 seconds to play.
Cole wants the puck.
Boy, does he want it.
- For the love of God, somebody stop him!
- This is bad.
No, no, no, no, no.
Number 55, Johnson, goes down hard.
Yep, is his leg supposed
to be bent like that?
No, it is not. I was right
about this game all along.
And somebody should really help Johnson.
He's not getting up, folks.
Hold on, hold on, hold on.
Let's get a medic!
This game's been called.
A somber mood has
descended on the arena.
Yes! Booyah!
Yes, it's a tie! Play is suspended.
All bets are off! All bets are off.
Up here, Maya. Right here.
Don't you know what this means?
No one wins or loses.
We have to give everyone
back their candy.
But we already ate their candy.
That's a conundrum.
Hang in there, man.
Hey.
Are you okay?
Doesn't really matter.
I know how you feel.
Look, you've no idea
how I feel right now.
You know what? I do.
I'm not just some girl
who loves hockey camp.
I get nothing but pressure
from my parents.
School, sports, everything!
They sent me a PSAT prep
book instead of candy.
So, I get it.
I'm like you.
So, you too?
Yeah.
We run!
No good, they'll track us!
I smell like watermelon.
Okay, we go out the window,
jack the RV and drive south.
Yes, I have a cousin in Costa Rica.
They're supposed to have
a great infrastructure.
- Yes!
- I should've never listened to you!
- Me? It was Maya's idea!
- Oh, so it's my fault
No.
Nick?
What are you doing?
Can't let you guys go down like this.
There's enough candy in here
to pay back the whole camp.
- Yes!
- Yeah!
Your sacrifice will not be forgotten.
Thank you, Nick.
Yes.
Okay, so here's the good news.
Eddie's all right, but he needs rehab,
so we're down a coach.
And we don't have time
to do a wide search,
and the draft is in two days.
I'm sorry, is something funny?
Sorry, I'm just telling you this is why
I thought this game was a bad idea.
Well, that's helpful, Alex. Thank you.
You got any solutions?
Sit around a campfire,
sing some folk songs?
This is hockey! This is what we do.
But this is what you don't understand.
I get that. I know hockey.
I coached my team to the State finals
last year, but we did it the right way.
You know what, I'm
tired of you telling me
everything that's wrong with this place.
So, you think you can do better?
Here! You got the job, coach.
- I'll see you at the draft.
- Yes, you will.
- Bring your skates.
- I will.
What's the draft?
