Magnum P.I. (2018) s02e04 Episode Script
Dead Inside
1 Once again, it's started I ain't ever gonna stop (WHISTLE BLOWS) I thought that you would know my deal by now RICK: I still can't believe the Rams are playing a preseason game - on the island.
- TC: Yeah, this is awesome.
MAGNUM: What do you think, Higgy? You know, as much as I appreciate the complex strategy of American football, I still think it lacks the artistry and grace of English football.
ALL: Soccer.
Right.
Agree to disagree.
Totally wasted a field pass on this one.
Mm-hmm.
Hey, which one of these guys is your buddy, anyway? That's him right there.
Coach Dawson.
Brains behind the defensive line.
We go way back.
Well, you got to thank him for hooking us up.
It's pretty cool.
You can thank him yourself.
He's headed this way.
You know you got to give that back, right? What? It's mine.
It's mine.
- Oh! (LAUGHS) - Coach Dawson.
(CHUCKLES): Yeah.
Man, what's up? Hey, this is Aaron Donald.
This man needs no introduction.
Best defensive player in the league.
Welcome to Hawaii.
This is Juliet, Rick, Thomas.
How you doing? Nice to meet you.
Hey.
Hey, Coach, did you Yeah, I was about to.
Hey, um, Aaron needs a favor.
What, you guys want a private chopper tour? Want to check out the volcano? DAWSON: Actually, you said your friend was a private eye, right? Private investigator.
Yeah.
This is my partner, Higgins.
Is there a problem? Well, I was in a coffee place in our hotel this morning.
I forgot my tablet.
I went back to get it it was gone.
Even went to go look in lost and found.
Nobody turned it in.
Sounds like somebody stole it.
I really wouldn't care that much, but our playbook's on that thing.
If that get out Mm, say no more.
These guys will find it.
- Right? - MAGNUM: Not a problem.
We will not rest till we get that tablet back in your hands.
Promise.
(CHARACTER GRUNTING) Mr.
Donald's tablet is offline.
So I am having a little trouble tracking it.
(CHARACTER GRUNTING ON PHONE) (BEEPING) - Magnum.
- Yes.
Me agreeing to be your partner does not mean that I do all the work whilst you live a charmed life of indulgence and "me time.
" Come on.
Our different skill sets is actually what makes us a great team.
That remains to be seen.
Hacking, computer searches all of that is totally your thing.
Well, now it appears that accounting is also going to have to be my thing.
I had a look at your books last night.
They are a joke.
What's wrong with my books? They consist of barely legible notes written on scratch paper.
Also, you have two accounts receivable, by the way.
A Mr.
Kama and a Mrs.
Pukui.
Mr.
Kama lost his job.
He's got kids.
Okay.
What about Mrs.
Pukui? Ugly divorce.
Husband took everything, including the toilet paper.
Who does that? When you do something for free, it's generally designated as a hobby.
Or charity.
This is a business, Magnum.
We need actual cash flow.
I was exercising compassion.
You should try it sometimes.
It feels really good.
Okay, so, we should track Aaron Donald's tablet from the time it was stolen to when and where it was shut off.
Brilliant.
You already did that.
Mm-hmm.
(PHONE RINGS) What's Katsumoto doing here? Oh.
Uh, I sent him some dark chocolate sea salt caramels.
I think I may have figured out a way to woo him back.
Seriously? You came all this way to return a box of caramels? No.
And what we're about to discuss has to stay between us.
Cone of silence.
Where does that phrase actually originate from? Seriously? Maxwell Smart.
Get Smart, the TV show.
Haven't seen it.
How is that even possible? Well, because, unlike some people, I didn't get my education from watching the television.
Well, it's a really good TV show.
Tell her, Gordie.
I've never seen it either.
Really? Anyway, uh, cone of silence.
Who is that? Detective I work with.
Richard Johnson.
I think he's dirty.
And I need to hire you to prove it.
Not that we're not flattered that you asked us to help, but if you're so convinced Detective Johnson is guilty, why not go after him yourself? Looking into a cop is tricky.
I can't dig inside the department without potentially tipping off Johnson or having all of HPD turn on me.
What about Internal Affairs? Not an option.
All it takes is one accusation to ruin someone.
I won't do that without hard proof.
And I don't have it.
What do you have? I'm not a fan of Johnson, but I never had a reason to think he was dirty until today.
Now, case of mine was supposed to go to trial.
Homicide.
The victim, Carly Kaiwi.
She was out shopping when the defendant, Sean Akina, tried to rob her.
Carly fought back.
Akina stabbed her to death.
Seven times.
MAGNUM: Wow.
That's excessive.
The son of a bitch was tweaking.
People like him don't care about the collateral damage as long as they get their fix.
They do have a disease.
If you don't want to cure yourself, you never will.
And you'll destroy everyone around you.
Hitting close to home, huh? So, how'd you find Akina? He blew a light.
Pulled him over half mile from the crime scene.
The knife was in his car.
His prints on the handle, her blood on the blade.
Well, it sounds like an open-and-shut case, but what does this have to do with Detective Johnson? (LOCK BUZZES, LATCH CLICKS) KATSUMOTO: Before court, I went to pick up the murder weapon.
And it was gone.
Iosua! Where's my evidence? I don't know.
Maybe you misplaced it? I took it to court yesterday.
Trial was delayed because the defendant was ill.
I returned the evidence last night at 6:00 p.
m.
to this box.
I, um I need to know who's been in here since then.
Get me the log.
Now.
Now, the only reasons to go in there are to pick up and drop off evidence and prep for trial.
So every officer has access.
Yeah.
But you have to sign a log and reference a case number.
Now, when I examined the log book, four of the five cops who went in there had valid reasons.
And the fifth officer, Detective Johnson, did not.
The case he referenced won't go to trial for six months.
He had no reason to be there today.
Is it possible that anyone else went into the evidence room without signing in? No.
No, the property clerk said he never left his post.
I can't dig anymore without raising suspicion.
Well, we'll take the case.
Pro bono.
As long as you finally forgive me.
I'd rather pay.
Detective, if we do discover that Johnson is dirty, the repercussions will be Massive.
All of his cases will come under review, and the trust we've built with the community will be gone.
Well, you guys should get started.
You don't have much time.
Why is that? Judge ruled if I can't produce the knife by tomorrow, Akina will be set free.
MAGNUM: Terrific.
24 hours to prove a seasoned cop is dirty or a killer walks.
Yeah.
No pressure.
I want to go back to my little grass shack In Kealakekua, Hawaii I want to be with all the kanes RICK: Hang on, hang on.
I thought business was hopping.
Why you need new brochures? Got some new packages here.
Check it out.
Let me see that.
Oh.
Buddy, you're gonna need to work on some of these names.
Why? "Air Romance"? Sounds kind of cheesy.
Man, you're missing the point.
"Package includes one complimentary drink at La Mariana.
" Nice.
I like that.
Cross-promotion.
- See? So you take back what you said.
- No.
Idea's good.
Names are still cheesy.
(PHONE RINGS) Thomas, what's up? Hey.
You guys busy? - Need a favor.
- Of course you do.
I need you to take the Aaron Donald case.
Yeah, 'cause it's not like you're the private investigator.
Or like we have our own jobs.
No.
I'm not being selfish this time.
- (LAUGHING) - MAGNUM: Seriously.
Katsumoto needs my help.
Okay, now we know you're lying.
No, I'm-I'm not.
He wants us to investigate a dirty cop who's trying to get a killer off.
HIGGINS: What happened to the cone of silence? TC and Rick are my cone.
Aw.
All right.
- We're on it.
- Okay, but location tracking was turned off on the tablet right after it was jacked.
So we're gonna have to find it another way.
Yeah.
Hey, listen, I'll make it up to you, okay? Promise.
- Damn straight.
- No, you won't.
Seems our killer, Sean Akina, has neither a job nor any other source of income.
That's no surprise.
He did try to rob Carly.
Yes.
But what is a surprise is he has a $750-an-hour defense attorney.
Kid must be connected to someone with money and enough juice to get a cop to steal evidence.
Or perhaps he has a more direct connection to Detective Johnson.
That still doesn't explain the high-priced attorney.
We have to look deeper, dig into both Johnson and Akina.
Bad boys, bad boys, what you gonna do? - What you gonna - Gordie.
Where are we? It's been 35 minutes.
I told you.
We don't have much time.
You need to look into Johnson and Akina.
We are literally doing both of those things as we speak.
See? You don't have to micromanage.
It's my dime.
I can do whatever the hell I want.
Yo, Orville.
Yo.
What you got? Hotel sent over footage from the coffee shop.
I'm fast-forwarding to the exact time.
How'd you get them to send that over? Manager's a Rams fan.
Okay, hang on.
That's your second major score today.
How did you get us into preseason practice? I told you.
I know the coach.
Yeah, but you didn't say how you know him.
Come on, give over the goods.
Tell me.
Tell Daddy.
Come on.
Daddy wants to know.
Look, after I played a little college ball, I got drafted in the NFL.
What? - How did I not know this? - Whoa, whoa, hold on, hold on.
I think I found our thief.
But you're not gonna believe this.
RICK: Oh.
It's a kid.
Yeah, but I don't know how we're gonna ID her.
It's not like she's gonna be in the database.
Well actually, she might be.
Okay.
I-I'll talk to you later.
Bye.
Sorry.
It was Abby.
Is that why you wanted a partner? So that I could do all the work whilst you could focus on your social life? Oh, come on.
You love being my partner.
You turn up anything new on Akina? No connection to anyone rich and powerful.
Mm.
Where is he being held? Uh, Oahu Correctional.
Why? Well, 'cause Rick's got a friend there, maybe he can pull up the visitor logs.
Does Akina have any family? His father died 12 years ago, car accident.
He did live with his mother, who's a retired teacher, until 2015.
Does he have any connection to his lawyer? - Hmm-mm.
- How about Detective Johnson? No.
I-I hacked the HPD database, and I cross-referenced all of Johnson's cases against both Akina and the lawyer.
Nothing.
Why would a pricey attorney rep a lowlife like Akina? And why would Detective Johnson steal evidence to help him out? No idea, but I did turn up something that backs up Gordon's suspicions.
Two years ago, some biological evidence in one of Johnson's cases became degraded because it wasn't stored properly, and they couldn't use it in the trial and the case was thrown out.
So it's possible he's messed with evidence before.
So what do you suggest we do? Well, we've got to find proof that he's dirty, get him to flip.
Should probably start by going to his house.
You can't be serious.
What? It's not like we haven't broken into a house before.
Yes, Magnum, but this house belongs to a police detective.
How is it any different if we get caught? We still broke into a house.
If you don't see the issue, then I am not going to waste my time explaining it to you.
(ENGINE REVVING) Nothing unusual in Detective Johnson's financial records.
Just gas and food.
Cops know how to hide money.
And he wouldn't want to leave a payoff trail.
I wonder what's up with Katsumoto.
What do you mean? The whole drug thing seemed to really get to him.
Wonder what that's about.
Well, if he ever forgives you, maybe he'll tell you.
Uh, Johnson's house is up here on the left.
MAGNUM: I'll park a couple of blocks away.
We can't be too careful.
You've really thought of everything, haven't you? Okay, what did I forget? Perhaps we should find out where Detective Johnson is right now? Yeah, that's pretty obvious.
Our next move.
(LINE RINGING) KATSUMOTO: Yeah? Where's Detective Johnson? Here, talking to his partner.
Why? You don't want to know.
Now I definitely want to know.
What are you up to? (DISCONNECT BEEP) - Kats - Really? You gonna do this? You follow your kid on social media? No.
Uh, it's an invasion of his privacy, - and I hate social media.
- See? I told you, Rich.
It's wrong.
You don't have kids.
I do.
They don't live with me, so I do what I have to to protect them.
And for future reference, I didn't ask for a damn poll.
Sorry.
He gets, uh, touchy.
I hadn't noticed.
(CHUCKLES) You hack into Johnson's security yet? Yes.
I took what was recorded on his surveillance cameras and I'm playing it back on a continuous loop, so you can get in and out undetected.
So we can get in and out undetected.
Once again, for the record, I think it's a mistake to break into a cop's house, so I will keep watch.
MAGNUM: Okay.
Someone should really tell Johnson to tone down the nautical theme.
(SOUND OF DOGS BARKING) - Someone coming? - No.
Then why are you calling? Just make sure you put everything back where you found it.
Cops are paid to be observant, okay? Johnson may notice if something looks out of place.
Aren't you supposed to be keeping lookout and not backseat investigating? Well, unlike you, I can multitask.
Well, isn't that great? (DISCONNECT BEEP) We got a break in the case.
Did you identify the tablet thief? Oh, did we ever.
Mastermind Amy Cecil.
- She's 12.
- MAGNUM: No way.
How'd you find her? We got footage from the coffee shop and ran it against the hotel kids club IDs.
That's right.
Amy and her father are out right now, but my friend Nala works at the hotel.
She's keeping an eye out.
Wow, you blokes are better at this than Magnum.
Hold on.
Who found the yacht? What yacht? (TC CHUCKLES) How much that baby go for? $300,000.
Deed was sitting right there on his desk.
But the yacht isn't in Johnson's name.
It's registered under an LLC.
Yeah, but the deed's in the guy's desk, there's a photo of him on top of the deck it's his.
No cop can afford that.
At least not a clean one.
Yeah, it's a good way to hide dirty money.
You buy it in cash, then flip it or borrow against it.
Hey, did you talk to your buddy at Oahu Correctional? No joy.
Akina hasn't had any visitors except his lawyer.
No phone calls, either.
Hmm.
Uh, Magnum Why are you investigating me? Sorry, I think you got the wrong guy.
No.
I'm a cop.
I know people can bypass normal security measures, which is why I have extra ones.
You remember the clock on the desk, right? It doesn't emit a signal unless it's recording, which it only does when it detects motion.
How'd you find me? Neighbors saw a red Ferrari, which I traced back to P.
I.
Thomas Magnum.
So I'm gonna ask you again.
Why are you investigating me? Who hired you? I am not at liberty to say.
Okay.
Unless you want to be arrested, or worse, back the hell off.
What is wrong with you? I'm not supposed to answer that.
Honestly, Magnum, I didn't even think you could be stupid enough to break into a cop's house.
HIGGINS: Look, to be fair, I mean, you knew Magnum's methods when you hired us.
RICK: Yeah, and one could say that's probably why you hired him in the first place, but I'll go ahead and mind my own business.
You know it's only a matter of time before Johnson traces this back to me.
Why is that? - It's not like we're friends.
- Hey! Do you get that I'm screwed now? They did find Johnson's yacht.
What happened to the cone? We are his cone.
The yacht's not enough.
And now, if there's anything else to find, we won't be able to find it.
I never should have hired you.
I think he just fired you, TM.
MAGNUM: You know, it's probably a good thing.
If he thinks we're not working the case, he can't micromanage.
So we're still on the case? Yeah.
I screwed this up, I'm gonna fix it.
Yeah, but do you have a plan? Yes.
Please let it not be another felony.
This is the stupidest plan I've ever heard.
- I disagree.
- Well, you would.
It's your plan.
I mean, Sean Akina's mother is never gonna give information about her son.
Why, because parents protect their children? Yes, generally.
Because they love them.
Well, yes.
What's your point? My point is, is he's been in jail for six months and hasn't had a single visitor, including his mother.
I find that strange.
Sometimes you surprise me, Magnum.
Usually, God divides, but I've got it all.
He's blessed me with, uh, brains, good looks, - charm - Calm down.
(KNOCK ON DOOR) - Can I help you? - Hi.
Yes.
We're private investigators.
My name is Thomas Magnum, and this is Juliet Higgins.
I was wondering if we can talk to you about your son Sean.
I've got nothing to say to you.
Sean is my son, but he ruined his life.
What's worse, he took away someone else's.
I'm through helping him.
We're not here to help him.
We're here to get justice for the life that he took.
I love Sean, and I always will.
HIGGINS: Of course.
- We understand that.
- Then you must also understand that not helping him, and actively hurting him are two very different things.
MAGNUM: That's fair.
And I couldn't begin to imagine the pain that you're going through, but a woman was brutally murdered by your son.
Don't you think Sean ought to take responsibility for that? Sean was always a good kid.
Never gave me much trouble growing up.
When did he change? It was after his father died.
He just fell in with the wrong crowd, and the drugs.
Soon, I didn't even recognize my own boy.
It's hard to raise a kid on your own.
My mother had to do the same thing.
Well, I had a little help.
My husband's best friend from high school, Sean's godfather, kept an eye on him.
Even offered to pay for college.
Sean spent it on meth.
That's your husband's best friend? Yes.
What's his name? Macario Palakiko.
You know him? By reputation.
He's a drug lord.
I just felt like Sean should have a man in his life.
I didn't know what he did till it was too late.
Investigating another cop? - Really? - Look Oh, before you deny it, I know you've been in touch with Thomas Magnum today 'cause I got his LUDS.
That's illegal.
What, like, breaking-into-my house illegal? Look, the only reason I didn't arrest your P.
I.
yet is because I wanted to know who hired him first, and now I do.
What do you want from me? You know, it's no secret we don't like each other, but I at least thought you'd have the stones to ask me directly whatever the hell it is you're suspecting me of.
Okay.
What were you doing in evidence lockup this morning? Two years ago, some idiot misplaced my evidence.
Case got thrown out.
After that, I check my evidence every week before trial to make sure no one screws it up again.
Let me guess.
The next question's gonna be about my yacht.
- It's not in your name.
- 'Cause people jump to conclusions.
My ex had money.
I loved the boat, she didn't.
When we got divorced amicably she gave it to me.
Now tell me, what the hell is going on, man? Kaiwi case.
Murder weapon was missing when I went to take it to court this morning.
What? You think I took it? I did but it's becoming clear I had it wrong.
I didn't see anyone going in or out of lockup.
But when I left, the clerk Iosua he wasn't sitting up front like he's supposed to.
(SCOFFS) (PHONE RINGING) I told you, Magnum.
I'm dealing with this myself.
Well, yeah, you did tell me, but as usual, I ignored you, and found something.
Ah, come on.
You don't want to know what it is? What is it? Uh, does the name Macario Palakiko ring a bell? HPD's been after him for years.
What's he got to do with this? Palakiko is Sean Akina's godfather.
We think he's footing the bill for the attorney.
We also think he might be responsible for the loss of your evidence.
MAGNUM: Yeah, we're just not sure how Detective Johnson's connected to this.
He isn't.
I had the wrong cop.
But I got another lead.
Property clerk, Iosua.
He lied about being at his post.
- Gonna brace him now.
- Do you need help? I appreciate the lead, but no.
Unless you want to piss off everyone at HPD, I think you should let us take this one.
There he is.
Didn't Katsumoto forbid you from using phony badges? I guess if he finds out, he won't be my friend.
Oh! Wait.
(CHUCKLES) Don't forget to drop the accent, by the way.
Iosua.
Detectives Grant and Howard.
We have some questions about a missing murder weapon.
I didn't do it.
(AMERICAN ACCENT): Very defensive for someone with nothing to hide.
I didn't take the missing evidence.
We didn't say you did, but we know for a fact that you left your post.
MAGNUM: Big no-no, by the way.
Let somebody sneak in undetected.
That wasn't why.
No I never leave my post.
- All right? It was the damn cookies.
- I'm sorry? One of the detectives brought chocolate chip cookies.
His wife made them.
He said it didn't have nuts, but my throat starting closing up.
- You have an allergy? - Yeah.
So I ran to get my EpiPen, and was only gone ten minutes.
Which detective? KATSUMOTO: Dugan? Are you sure? He knew Iosua was allergic.
Gave him nuts so he would have to leave his post.
I can't believe Jim would You know, last year, he was shot saving two other officers.
He's a hell of a cop, and a good man.
What do you think could've made him turn dirty? I don't know.
Nothing in your search? (REGULAR ACCENT): We couldn't find anything connecting Dugan to either Palakiko or Akina.
And Dugan didn't receive any unusual phone calls today.
No, if Dugan's talking to Palakiko, he's using a burner.
Maybe we should check Palakiko's call history.
Surely a major drug kingpin like Palakiko is also going to be using a burner.
Mmm, sometimes guys that high up, they get cocky, think they're untouchable.
We can't brace Dugan yet.
I need proof that Palakiko had him steal the evidence on behalf of Akina.
It would also help to know why.
Well, maybe Johnson can help.
(EXHALES) He's not my biggest fan right now.
But I guess there's no other way.
You okay? It was hard enough going after somebody I don't like.
Now I'm investigating a friend.
- Thanks for meeting me.
- Why are we here? Dugan.
Oh, first you go after me, now you're going after my partner? I don't want to jam anyone up.
But Sean Akina killed Carly Kaiwi, and he could be out tomorrow because of a dirty cop.
Hey, hey, hey.
Dugan is a great cop.
Believe me, I was much happier going after you.
Dugan gave Iosua cookies he was allergic to so he'd leave his post.
Oh, come on, man.
That's all you got? Cookies? I also know who's been working to get Akina out of jail.
It's his godfather, Macario Palakiko.
But no clue why Dugan would want to help him.
(SIGHS) What? I might be wrong, man, but after Dugan got shot, he needed four surgeries.
You know, he was in a lot of pain.
I think he's hooked on pills.
He can't get them legally anymore, so he has to use Palakiko's guys.
Palakiko blackmails him to get his godson off for murder.
I never noticed he was on anything.
Uh, hell, I'm his partner, and I wasn't even sure.
I mean, I suspected it a few times, but he hid it well.
Never let it affect his work.
Or maybe I just didn't want to see it.
Where's Dugan now? Your friend Nala.
She definitely saw the kid, right? Yeah.
She said her and her dad just got back.
You know, I cannot believe that you were in the NFL.
How long did you play? Burned out after one season.
Never even got on the field.
But you still made pro.
How come you didn't tell me that, huh? (SIGHS) 'Cause I was the very last pick in the draft.
Wait, you were that guy they got a name for that guy, right? No, let's just change the subject.
Mr.
Irrelevant.
See? That's exactly why I didn't want to tell you, man.
Hey, come on, now, listen.
Hear this, all right? You're the guy that stepped in to help make his buddy's dream come true.
For that, you'll always be my MVP.
- Leave me alone.
- Come on, man.
(CHUCKLES) There she is.
Excuse me.
Can I help you? No, but, uh, maybe your daughter can.
I'm sorry? What's this about? A tablet's been stolen.
Belonged to one of the Rams.
Aaron Donald.
Do you want to tell him, or should we? RICK: Time to do the right thing, kid.
I'm sorry, Dad.
I shouldn't have done it.
I didn't raise you to steal.
I know.
But you told me we couldn't afford one.
Uh, come on.
You guys staying in a pretty nice place right now.
Times have been tough.
Uh, our church sponsored the trip.
It's still no excuse.
I know.
But the tablet was just sitting there.
And your birthday's next week and I wanted to get you something really cool.
I was gonna download all your favorite music.
I'm really sorry.
HIGGINS: And again, I work whilst you play.
I'm just waiting for you to tell me what you found on Palakiko's call history so I can spring into action.
There's nothing unusual on his business or his home phones, but Palakiko did make a call to an unlisted cell phone about 45 minutes ago.
Can you ping its location? (COMPUTER BEEPING) (PHONE RINGING) What's going on? Palakiko made a call to a burner about 45 minutes ago.
The location's inside HPD.
Palakiko called a burner.
It's here.
Can you guys call it? (PHONE RINGING) Hello? Hello? HIGGINS: He just answered.
You can hang up, Higgins.
Dugan.
Dugan! Whoa, hey! Hey! Watch out, watch out! Katsumoto, what's going on? - He ran.
- But you're going after him, right? Now who's micromanaging? Hey, check the stairs.
- Hey, you see Dugan? - No, man.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Jim, Jim, Jim, Jim.
Whoa! Whoa, whoa, whoa! Put the gun down! Don't come any closer! Dugan, listen to me.
- Don't do it.
- If he dies - Akina goes free.
- Stay back! Please.
It's not too late.
It is.
They blackmailed me.
And I I crossed the line.
I can't come back.
You can.
You can fix it.
Help me put Akina away.
What did you do with the evidence? (DUGAN PANTING OVER PHONE) DUGAN: I just turned it over.
That's why Palakiko made the call to the burner 45 minutes ago.
To arrange a handoff.
You gave it to Palakiko? No, it, uh, it was a dead drop.
Where? Um Locker, Ala Moana Beach.
We got to get over there fast.
Can't you go any faster? You can walk.
KATSUMOTO (OVER PHONE): Dugan, listen to me.
Only you can save this case, and that's how you start saving yourself.
There's no reason to.
- My life is over.
- No.
The good stuff doesn't go away.
You put a lot of bad guys inside, helped a lot of people.
I'm not that guy anymore.
I'm out of control.
I can't stop.
Who you are inside hasn't changed.
You're a victim of the drugs.
DUGAN: How do you know? Maybe the drugs just show who I really am.
I know because of my sister Kim.
My hero.
When the bullies down the block went after me, my big sister kicked their asses.
But as she got older and started using, the drugs took ahold of her life, and Kim would disappear for months.
Come back, promise to get clean, use again.
Same thing over and over.
She stole from my parents, broke their hearts.
And mine.
HIGGINS: Detective, we're at the beach.
What did Dugan wrap the evidence in? Jim.
What did you wrap the knife in? Uh paper bag.
MAGNUM: Who wears that to the beach? HIGGINS: That's got to be one of Palakiko's men.
(TRUCK BEEPING) (TIRES SCREECH) MAGNUM: Move.
Come on, move.
You saying it won't make it so.
Magnum, the call's cut out.
Katsumoto's got Dugan.
We got to get Palakiko.
KATSUMOTO: Few years ago, she came to me out of her mind.
I had tried everything to help her but tough love, so I cut her off.
That was the last time I saw her.
Not a day goes by that I don't wish I handled it differently.
This time I will.
Jim, we're we're both getting another chance here.
What's the point? Everyone's given up on me.
I won't give up on you.
Couldn't have gotten far, he's on foot.
HIGGINS: There.
(TIRES SCREECHING) (TIRES SCREECHING) - Do you have another one of those? - Nope.
You know, if this partner thing works out, I'm really gonna need a gun safe under my seat as well.
First thing on my list.
If we live.
You're gonna need a bigger gun.
(TIRES SCREECHING) OFFICER: Let me see your hands! OFFICER: Drop your weapon! Drop it! OFFICER: One in custody.
All right, clear that weapon! (INDISTINCT CHATTER) (PHONE BUZZES) They got Palakiko with the knife.
Akina's finished.
It's over.
Okay? Come on It's over.
Let me go I don't wanna be your (CRYING): I'm sorry.
- Hero - I'm sorry.
I don't wanna be a big man Just wanna fight with everyone else It's all right, I got him.
Your masquerade Don't wanna be A part of your parade Everyone deserves a chance to Walk with everyone else On the charge of murder in the first degree, we the jury find the defendant, Sean Akina, guilty.
Ooh I'm so sorry for you.
(SIGHS) It hurts, but It's the right thing.
Good thing you guys caught Palakiko with the evidence.
Couldn't make the case without chain of custody.
How did you get him to testify against his own godson? Well, he loves him, but not enough to do life in prison.
So we good? I'll drop a check in the mail.
Unbelievable.
What do I got to do to get that guy to forgive me? You know what? I don't even know why I care.
I do.
You are painfully selfish, frequently unreliable, and sorely lacking in self-awareness.
But when someone becomes your friend, like Gordon, you take that very seriously.
And the idea that you've ruined something that important to you upsets you deeply.
Because despite your many, many many flaws, you're actually a good man.
Am I wrong? So let me go I don't wanna be your It's been a long time.
Hero I know I should have come sooner.
I don't wanna be a big man Just wanna fight like everyone else Ooh I'm sorry I wasn't there for you, Kimmy.
I hope you're at peace now.
You know, I like to think you're watching over me, 'cause, uh 'Cause you'd have been proud of me today.
You know, it took a long time for me to to get it.
I was just so angry that I (SNIFFLES) I couldn't see the hold it had on you.
How powerless you must have felt.
And I Let me go I don't wanna be (SNIFFLES) I turned you away.
I'm so sorry.
I don't wanna be a big man Just wanna fight with everyone else.
(INDISTINCT CHATTER) Are they gonna lock the kid up? Nah.
She felt awful.
She won't do it again.
Especially not now.
What's happening? Aw, he gave the dad a new tablet, plus two tickets to the game.
That's one hell of a thing to do.
He said to thank you.
Oh, it was nothing.
Oh, I'm sure it wasn't.
You didn't do anything.
He also offered to pay you.
I said no.
You did? I was just gonna ask him for another ticket.
By the way, do you think maybe you can hook me up with just one more ticket? (CHEERING) Oh! Hey, pal, give me a piece of that pretzel, will you? Ha! I cannot believe that you were Mr.
Irrelevant.
Thank you.
- Hey.
- Forget I told you that or go hungry.
Your choice.
Go hungry.
Okay.
Come on.
Admit it.
How much do you love being my partner? - Love is a very strong word, Magnum.
- (CHUCKLES) But, uh, I don't hate it.
Oh.
By the way, I decided to, um, take your advice, and exercise a little compassion.
- Really? What'd you do? - Mm-hmm.
Gordon's done us so many favors, and our fees are really high for someone on a cop's salary.
Smart.
You gave him a discount? I waived our fee.
You could've waived your half.
Mm.
Scoot over.
Come on.
- Hey, buddy.
- Hey, pal.
Swap seats? - It's gonna cost you.
- What? What do you need? I think you know what I need, buddy.
- Get it.
- There we go.
- TC, my man.
- Oh.
How's the view right there? - Great.
- Mind if I check it out? Katsumoto.
Spent 400 bucks.
Macadamia nuts.
Chocolate sea salt-covered caramels.
I solved your case.
Apparently for free.
And I got you these amazing seats.
Come on.
What-what is it gonna take to be your friend again? We were never friends, Magnum.
You see, I don't buy that, because if we weren't.
You wouldn't be so mad at me.
So just tell me.
How-how do I say "I'm sorry"? Well, you can start by actually saying it.
Wait, I never said I'm sorry? Nope.
Well, I'm sorry.
(CHUCKLES) Give me some of those.
- Oh! - (ALL CHEERING) About time!
