Chesapeake Shores (2016) s02e05 Episode Script
Buried Treasures
1 Previously on Chesapeake Shores.
You know, it is nice being back in in Nashville with you.
How are things with you two? I don't know.
This is our uh old stomping grounds.
I'm just worried about Trace.
[cell phone rings.]
Hey Abby! How's it going? Can't always be with the people you love Abby.
So, I'm thinking that maybe we can bring in a mandolin player.
Leigh, we really need to talk I know, it's probably a money issue, but remember Dean Hendler? I think he just left his old band.
Yeah, Dean would be great, but We should also start writing another album, y'know Leigh! What? What do you think of Hall? I think he's pretty intense.
I mean for us.
Because I just don't get him, y'know, the way he works.
I don't think he's the right producer for our album.
Wait that's not our choice, is it? We owe him a record.
I don't know, maybe.
Leigh, we always said if it wasn't right creatively, we'd move on.
I'm not exactly sure how, but we'll figure something out, right? You're not keeping anything from me, are you? No I'm just wondering what you thought.
I think I have a great partner.
The miles are getting longer, it seems The closer I get to you So I'm going home, to the place where I belong Where your love has always been enough for me I'm not running from No, I think you got me all wrong I don't regret this life you chose for me I said these places and these faces are getting old So I'm going home I'm going home The numerator is the number above the line in a common fraction showing how many hearts indicated by the denominator Oh no, you've got to be kidding me.
I took two years of calculus and you just made fractions completely impossible to understand.
Yeah, you definitely need to call Mom.
I think I can teach my own daughter math, thank you very much.
Hah, I have heard that before.
How was the morning paddle, Ahab? Three seals, one dolphin, and not a glimpse of the great, white whale.
Sounds like fun.
It is fun! And I keep inviting you, you should come.
It's a two man kayak.
Only yoga before sunrise, Dad.
You landlubbers are missing out.
To the ship, to the crew And to the blue lady of the skies.
All right girls, it's time for school.
Can we go to the fair after school? Actually you know what, I'm signing up for the PTA today after school, so I'm not sure.
You have time for the PTA? No, but that's why I moved home.
So I could do this sort of thing for my children.
Oh, there's my little Caitlyn and Carrie.
Sugar, sugar.
Hey Mom, how's the cleaning in the attic going? Oh well, I think it'd go faster and better if I had a little help.
Oh sure, I'll help you this weekend.
I have a son who I think said that to me last weekend! Did I? Oh yeah, I think I did Time flies when you're having fun.
You promised! I promise.
I love you.
And I have a goodie that I think belongs to you.
What is it? Hey Gran.
Oh, thank you.
I made this when I was 15.
It kind of looks like a treasure map.
It is, sort of.
I took something from everybody in the family and I buried it in the backyard.
We've got to find this.
Really? It doesn't make any sense.
I am trained to read maps.
We can figure this out.
Gran, you want in on this? No, I think I'll pass because when you go and look into the past, it behooves you to do it on your own.
Fun! Just so you know, I've had this conversation before.
You're about to tell me that you and Leigh are a team, you write with her, you record with her, and you're loyal.
True, but I also came here to tell you that you're making a big mistake.
Leigh, she's incredibly talented.
Give us a chance as a band, I believe our album will be better for it.
KAP Records wants you as a solo artist, and I want you to be successful.
And the way that happens is for the audience to imagine you're single, available.
You want me as a solo artist for the image? People want to see what they want to see, Trace.
Yeah, I get it, but if Leigh and I deliver a great album, we put on a great show How many albums did you sell the first time, when you were driving around the country in a van, you and Leigh, putting on great shows? 15,000.
15,322.
I checked.
Each of KAP Records artists, who went on tour as a solo act, went gold within six months.
That's half a million records.
In case you don't remember how this works, with a gold record, it would make a fortune in royalties.
And now I'm late.
Don't blow this, Trace! You let yourself out.
Tell the cook that these eggs are too scrambled.
Okay, absolutely.
Mr.
Tucker says says his eggs are too scrambled.
What does that even mean? There's no such thing as too scrambled, is there? No, scrambled is pretty much scrambled, but I'll scramble them again with slightly less scrambling.
Maybe we should just ask him to leave.
You can't do that.
I'd ask him nicely.
Since he's been here, that's all we're doing with this guy Scrambling.
He's complained about the speed of room service, which we don't have, so I started, then he complained about the color of the sheets, the hot water being too hot, and he doesn't like the scent of the soap.
Soap's soap.
I told him the color of the sheets is custom, better too hot than too cold, and I've switched out his soap five times, lavender, vanilla, now it's unscented.
Jeez, I got off easy compared to you.
Maybe I should just tell him no.
I know people like Robert Tucker.
Trust me, he won't understand no.
People like him want what they want, when they want it.
Hey, you do you know people like Robert Tucker? Umm croissant? So good! Miss? I'm smiling.
Coming! Okay, here I come Abby O'Brien? Jackie Olsen? It's been so long 16 years.
It's now Jackie Quinn, I married Roland.
Roland Quinn.
Wasn't he dating Tina We're no longer friends.
Right congratulations.
I'm actually here because I was hoping to sign up for the PTA.
Are you sure? Most of the volunteer jobs are at the school during the day.
Yeah, positive.
Well, there's one thing, but we already have a volunteer.
Maybe you'd like to do it together? Sure, that would be great.
Douglas? He's new to Chesapeake.
Douglas Peterson? Abby what's your last name now? - O'Brien Winters.
- Hey.
- Nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you, too.
So, how's the new job? Bennett, Beecham & Findlay? Nice ring.
Right, it's been it's been.
Maybe it'll get better.
Maybe it's just about getting used to something new.
I hope so.
I've been there a month and I'm not holding my breath.
Maybe when you pass the Bar? If When! Okay, when but it doesn't help that my boss is an absolute downer.
Oh, well then maybe I'm wrong.
I don't know.
Hi, I'll have a non-fat, half-caf, double-shot, three sugar, no foam latté, please.
I know who orders that drink Hmm? Danielle Clayman Who? Oh, just a girl I used to know You left town unexpectedly.
Hey! To be fair, I did tell you I was leaving.
Yes, but usually when that happens, people return.
Can I plead temporary insanity? I'm Megan.
Oh yeah, sorry.
Danielle, this is my mom.
Mom, this is Danielle.
We went to law school together.
We were in the same study group and I thought she was still in New York.
Nope, I am living and working in Baltimore.
Really? Wow, I'm working in Baltimore now, too.
No way! So what brings you here to Chesapeake Shores? I'm spending the next couple of weekends here doing some pro-bono work for the Bay Defense League.
Nice! Wow, well we totally have to get together.
Well, I'd invite you to the tables, but I know how you feel about doing work for free.
She knows me too well.
Well then do you want to just meet here, maybe? Yeah, sure you can pay.
Absolutely.
Nice to meet you.
You too.
Same study group, huh? Yeah Danielle and I, she uh I like her.
She's good for you.
Thanks Mom.
Sorry, we're not open yet.
I know.
But I love what you've done with this place.
It's gonna be great for the community.
I'm gonna have to come by with my wife.
She loves country music.
I just came by to tell you your brother would love to say hello.
Then he can call me.
Well like you, he prefers a face-to-face.
We have been talking face-to-face.
Maybe you and he should give that a try.
Well, regardless of what I don't know, I think you should have another face-to-face considering on what you plan to do with the Trust.
And your brother is the one sponsoring the fair.
So the problem with this map, other than all the doodles of All my favorite characters from Pride and Prejudice.
That is Elizabeth Bennett, that's Mr.
Darcy, and this The longest novel and the shortest treasure hunt in history.
And we failed I thought you said you did this in the Army? Yeah I did, but with actual maps, not ones that were made by 15 year old girls obsessed with Jane Austin.
Come on, it spruces it up! Do you even remember what you took from all of us? No, not really.
Honestly, I don't remember even burying it.
I just remember I wanted to hide.
I didn't want to see this world around me.
Just like what I do with Georgia.
What, hide? It's like I said, with Georgia it was easier to not deal with what was going on.
We just avoided it.
So all of us O'Briens bury our heads in the sand.
Like a flock of ostriches.
Which makes our emotional epiphany a simile about flightless birds.
Oh, nice! And now we're both literally and figuratively digging up the past.
And talking about it.
Which, to be honest, I don't even really like doing.
Me neither.
Except it's all I ever write about You don't think that maybe you're just being a little too critical? No.
I get the whole hating your own work thing, that's totally normal, but now when I read my own work, I want to hunt myself down, I want to tackle myself.
My literary abilities have been marooned in an empty desert, they have been lost in a sea of darkness, and then they have been swallowed up by a big black dark hole of nothingness.
What? The fire pit.
A circle of rocks.
That's where we begin.
Oh, goodie! Well, Caitlyn can't do fractions and I apparently can't teach, but luckily Mom is a good tutor.
Oh, I remember.
She had to help Connor with his algebra because you made him cry.
I did not make him cry, did I? Yeah, you did.
Okay, enough math talk.
How's the recording going? Definitely not the way I thought it would.
What do you mean? I'm just so close to having the career I've always wanted.
But in order to get it, I gotta lose something I'm not ready to let go of.
It's good, keep it going.
Ah, perfect thank you.
Hello Mick.
Thomas Just like old times, huh? Doesn't feel like old times.
No, I guess it isn't.
Nice turnout.
Well, it's always nice when the town can rally behind a cause that everyone can agree upon.
Yes, yes it is.
You shouldn't have done this.
Maybe, but when you give someone only one option, you shouldn't be surprised if they take it.
Thomas, you took a complex issue and turned it into a brochure.
It's not that complex an issue.
Yeah it is, when you make it about me.
Because it's a personal issue.
This is very personal, but it's personal between us.
Dad always said, you keep your dirty laundry inside the house, you don't hang it out on the line.
Well, Dad never said that to me.
Well, maybe you weren't listening.
Maybe because he didn't care.
Yeah, yeah.
Hey Adam, I want you to do me a favor.
I want you check up on one of the permits for the Earth Fair.
Specifically for Thomas O'Brien's booth I'm going to be honest with you, I'm a little bit nervous about what we're going to find in here.
So apparently my grandmother's friend Betsy has been doing the fall finances for the last 30 years.
From the looks of it, I'm guessing she is not an MBA.
No, she was old school.
Wow, the woman at the PTA really doesn't like you, does she? No, we didn't really get along in high school.
I think she wanted to date my boyfriend.
Come on, it was years ago.
Why is she still angry? Maybe because I'm dating him again? Hmm, well that's neat.
All right I don't know, I'll take evens, you take odds? All right.
So your boyfriend, is he in finance also? No, he's a musician.
He's actually in Nashville right now recording an album.
Really? That's cool.
Yeah, it's good.
You know, it's hard sometimes not seeing each other because he's travelling all the time.
I'll bet.
So what about your wife? Doe she work in Baltimore? No, not anymore.
I think we should try and get out of our deal.
You know we can't do that.
I just don't like the direction that Hall is taking the album.
Trace, we talked about this when we signed with KAP.
Less control, more exposure.
We didn't have a choice then and we don't have it now.
Then we just walk.
What can they do? Besides sue us and ruin our lives? And I won't let you do what you're doing.
What? Trace, I know what really happened.
I know what Hall offered you.
I know too many people in town not to find out Hall wants you as a solo act.
Yeah well, what he wants and what he's gonna get not to find out Hall wants you as a solo act.
Are two different things.
Trace, you don't get a lot of breaks in life and there aren't many second chances.
You gotta do this.
It's not all about me.
We got here together.
Well, we signed a deal and Hall owns our masters.
So what he wants is gonna happen, whether we like it or not.
Not if it means the end of the band.
Trace they own us.
Are you sure this is right? You know what I don't understand? I navigated my team out of the Panjshir valley and yet I can't even read a simple map of our own backyard.
No, this is right.
You know that Dad once said we are related to some famous pirate? So theoretically, we should have no troubles reading this map.
Well the problem is, you actually know what you're talking about, I on the other hand, am unfettered by information.
So what, it's the blind leading the sighted? You know what's strange? I remember when Mom left but everything up until that point, it's like I'm remembering somebody else's life.
That Bree O'Brien was gonna be a famous playwright, living in New York City, three Tony awards, and married to George Clooney.
I was gonna be a surgeon.
Married? I don't know if I'll ever get married.
Me neither now.
It's not something we O'Briens do very well.
Oh yeah, we're in the wrong spot.
What? And I need that back by 3 PM! You know when people say the customer is always right? I hate those people.
Those people don't know what they're talking about.
We should find those people and introduce them to him.
Those people would strangle Robert Tucker.
I've changed his towels twice today and every time he asks for a new color and I apologize and say we just have pink.
I like the color, it's unique.
I know, right? And now he wants his suit dry cleaned.
Do we do that? The most important thing is that we work as a team.
It's you and me against the world, and by world, I mean Robert Tucker.
- I'm not going anywhere.
- I know, thank you.
I don't walk out on friends.
You know, that's one thing I do know about you.
I need to get more towels.
I'll be at the dry cleaner.
Hey, Abby.
Jack, what are you doing here? Well, I wanted to come by and tell you that the New York office is very impressed with the work that you've been doing for Matt Fox.
Thank you.
And also to see how you're doing.
What is all this? Oh, this is Fall Fair receipts.
PTA? You moved all the way to Baltimore to get stuck doing this? Yes well, I'm not alone.
Douglas Peterson is the lucky parent helping me do all this, although if you wanna help, I'll give you 1987.
I know Douglas Peterson.
He works here in town at Dutton, Latton & Pineta.
Ex-Wall Street guy and like you, also came to Baltimore to spend some time with his kid, but What's that? Oh I heard he lost his wife about a year ago.
It's pretty sad.
[Cell phone ringing.]
He did not mention that.
I'm sorry Abby, I gotta take this.
Really great to see you.
Yeah, you too.
Jack Barton.
Yeah? Make sure the team sees it right away.
I can't believe you ended up in Baltimore.
I know! It wasn't my first choice of cities, but I was offered a job with the Public Advocacy Law Center.
No way! Yeah! I'm already working on two First Amendment cases.
What? Congrats! Save the world, right? Yeah! And you're at Beckett, Beacham and Findlay.
Bennett, Beacham and Findlay and it's a means to an end.
Which is? I prefer to buy the world.
That sounds like you, but But what? I mean I'm not surprised you ended up at a big firm, I'm just surprised you ended up there.
Why? Well, because they're the evil empire.
They take cases that the worst firms refuse to take.
Yeah but, everyone needs a lawyer, Danielle.
Yeah, I just didn't think that lawyer would be you.
Well, we can't all be arguing for free speech, you know.
Maybe, but I just didn't think you would be the one trying to end it.
It's like law school all over again.
Yeah right, it's like we never left Hey Pete.
Hey congrats, I heard the news.
Yeah, listen.
I need a favor.
Sure thing.
The industry showcase tomorrow night I want in.
What? I need a spot for me and Leigh.
Wait, what about your solo deal with KAP Records? You know Mark Hall is not gonna like that.
Yeah, well, you know what they say, "You gotta dance with the one who brought you.
" Right? I hear that.
You got it, Trace.
Thanks, Pete.
Well, I think Betsy would be proud.
It only took two MBAs and 24 hours to make sense of 30 years of mayhem.
Yes, we did a great job.
Yeah we did.
What's up with you, are you okay? Yeah, I I just feel awful.
I was complaining the other day about not seeing my boyfriend, and I didn't know about your Ah! So sorry.
C'mon, no need to be sorry.
I didn't tell you because I don't like talking about it.
Every time I tell somebody, they treat me differently, so I didn't wanna bring it up.
Well, if I start to treat you differently, just yell out "Wrong!" All right, you got yourself a deal.
Speaking of which, Corey's baseball game is in an hour and I like to be there to watch him warm up, so I'm gonna go.
Well, nice work.
You too Hey.
Hey, Leigh.
Non-fat vanilla latte? What did you do? I got Pete to give us a slot in the Showcase.
Trace, what for? We can't introduce ourselves to the industry when we're already under contract.
Just trust me, I got a plan.
Okay partner? It's gonna be great.
Enjoy the books, ladies.
He's British! The City's claims of financial injury in their amended complaints, specifically lost tax revenue and extra municipal expenses satisfy Hey! Mom, is Bree paying you to be here? No, she just asked me to fill in.
Would you consider temping at a law office, too? Have you seen Danielle yet? Yeah.
Yeah actually, I have.
And? And she's working.
Do you remember the Bay Defense League? She's volunteering for them right now.
Volunteering.
Now that would be a nice thing to do.
Yeah.
As it stands, I'm about as far away from volunteering as humanly possible.
But you like her.
That's true.
And by volunteering you would I could be closer to her, which would be completely selfish.
What are you still doing here? Thank you.
Hey, how're you feeling with Trace being gone? A little bit better today, actually.
What happened? I've been, worried, with him being in Nashville, but today I got some perspective.
Do you have any more? Because I could really use some.
Could you? Are you having Robert Tucker problems? Robert Tucker problems.
He still hasn't checked out yet? He is apparently allergic to everything we've been serving him.
I offered to call in a doctor, but he's refused.
You know what? Kick him out.
Before he dies? Yeah.
Y'know, I don't mind the beds and breakfasts, but it's the people that are the problem.
But this is lovely.
I know.
Wait a second, who's watching Wordplay? Mom.
What? She needs a job.
And what about the B&B? David.
He needs a job, too.
He's a chef! He doesn't mind.
Do you even pay him? - Yes! - Really? When I can.
I should really go help him.
You probably should.
Yeah So our goal is to cover the entire coastline in order to fully protect the watershed.
The most important thing we can do is change the conversation.
It's not about mitigating damage, but stopping it.
How you doing, Connor? Uncle Thomas.
Hey, I'm doing well.
How are you doing? Good.
You here working for one of the groups at the Fair? No, actually I'm just visiting a friend.
Hey, I hear you're at Bennett, Beecham & Findlay now? Yeah, that's right.
How did you know? Gran told me, she's very proud.
Yeah, she was a big help.
Good.
How are you feeling about it? Well I think it's a we'll see sort of situation, you know? Yeah sure, these things have a way of working themselves out.
That's what I'm hoping for.
Well, good luck.
Thank you for asking.
Sure.
I'm gonna go say hi.
- Okay.
- Okay.
Can you hurry it up? I'm exhausted! Me too, and bored! It wouldn't kill you to help out a little.
Oh, I think it would.
I know it would.
You know this is your map, you're the one that committed the crime.
Yes, but criminal masterminds have minions.
Did you just call me a minion? Yes! Whoo, I did it! You did it, awesome! Looks good.
That's really good! Yes, thanks.
Hey Trace.
Thanks for sticking by me.
It's nothin'.
You would've done the same for me.
Come on.
Trace John? Peter filled me in.
I was thinking you might need a bass player.
If the offer still stands, that is.
You know it.
Come on, let's do this.
Trace? Did you forget something? You're under contract.
The Trace Riley Band walks out on that stage and your album will never be released.
I'll make sure of it.
[Applause.]
How's everybody doin' tonight? I'm Trace Riley, this is the lovely Leigh Corley, and this is the one and only John Rawl.
We're The Trace Riley Band.
Didn't think I'd see you here tonight But I guess I really should have known Someone else is living in your light And I'm standing in the shadow Well I guess I went and let things fall away And I promised you that I was gonna change But it's too late You met somebody now I bet he's pretty good for you I thought I'd know somehow How to handle falling through But when I see your face old memories come crashing through these walls Whoa, here comes the free fall Here comes the free fall Here comes the free fall Leigh and I just finishing recording with Mark Hall.
So you've signed already? Just for the one album.
Really and then? As good as it was working with Mark, I think the Trace Riley Band is gonna be moving in another direction.
Trace and I have always had chemistry as writing partners.
And John Rawl's baselines are the glue that hold it all together.
Musically, that is.
For us, it's all about collaboration.
Our strength is the band.
Give me a call.
Will do.
Jess, we got a problem.
Don't tell me, he's back? No, I ran his credit card.
And he stiffed me? On top of everything he put us through, he didn't pay his bill? Worse he lied about his name.
I knew it.
He's a criminal, right? He's a killer, isn't he? He annoyed someone to death.
What's his real name and have you called the police yet? He's a travel writer, and not just any.
He's written the quintessential books on American travel.
He's Kenneth Shane.
No! Mmm-hmmm.
Maybe he didn't hate us as much as we hated him.
Don't worry.
I mean, how many people read the New York Times? You're not having any pie? Right now, I'm not very hungry.
Suit yourself, the apple rhubarb is excellent.
What are you doing, Thomas? Eating pie.
Don't you be smart with me.
You're turning this thing with Mick into something it is not.
Mom, I'm doing what I need to do.
I should've stopped this years ago, I could've.
I should've stopped your father, from doing what he did to you.
You can't blame yourself over what happened.
I do, I do.
Because I should've known better.
Hey Mick, you should try the apple rhubarb.
Thanks, I'll have the blueberry! Mick? Whatever it is you're going to do, don't do it.
Mom, I'm sitting down at a table, having a piece of pie.
But I did just hear some news.
The sponsor of the event got all the necessary permits except for the one for its own booth.
Really? So all my tables have been removed? Well, they're in the process being removed.
The fair will run through next weekend, but the sponsor, alas, is gone.
Alas Talk to you later, Mom.
Mick.
See you, Tommy.
I can't believe you did this! Oh, so now it's my fault? You shouldn't be doing this to Thomas.
The way you're treating him is not right.
I want you to stop it! And you said you weren't going to pick sides.
Oh, Mick.
The sides were picked a long time ago.
You know Jess, when you offer to cook for your family, you're the one who's supposed to be cooking.
I can't, I'm too nervous.
And you don't know how? Yeah, that too.
You haven't read it yet? No, I don't want to.
If it's bad, I'm going to have to close down the B&B, move away from Chesapeake Shores, and the O'Brien family name might be ruined forever.
Isn't that a little dramatic? No.
Just read it.
All right.
"Traveling across the country, I've discovered many long kept secrets.
The majestic cliffs of Yosemite, the warm waters of, okay blah blah blah And then I managed to stop in the charming town of Chesapeake Shores.
A quaint and delightful village filled with friendly and gracious folk.
Can one say the same about the local B&B?" Okay, I'm not reading anymore.
In fact, I'm never opening my eyes again.
Fine.
"The local B&B, run by a native of the town, leaves no stone unturned.
Every whim is attended to and every request is met with a smile.
The food was prepared by what can only be described as a master chef.
Mr.
David Peck delivers an experience that delights and restores at every turn.
From the downy morning scones to the pillow's sprig of lavender at day's end, Ms.
Jessica O'Brien" He called me Jessica! "Created the Inn so you would feel at home.
If this is what home is like, then Ms.
O'Brien, consider me family".
We did it! He used my name.
Isn't that great? He used my name, too.
I hate Robert Tucker, but I love Kenneth Shane.
You know they're the same person? I don't care! This is so great! I gotta go, I gotta call everyone! Heck, I couldn't even get past the lobby.
Hall left instructions not to let me in the building.
So much for Hall coming around.
Look the way I see it, we delivered the album, we met our obligations.
As far as I'm concerned, we don't owe Hall anything.
So what's next? Write another album.
We don't have a label, who's gonna release it? We'll go indie, do it our way.
Yeah, just like we used to Staying here in Nashville? I got a club to open back in Chesapeake.
I'll call Linda.
Jackie.
Hi.
Well, you always were good at math.
Thank you.
Unfortunately I can't Teach it.
I know, you tried to tutor me once.
I did? Yeah, you made me cry.
Oh, umm Sorry! All right! Thanks to Gran and Kevin's hard work, I can now officially open the first O'Brien Family Time Capsule.
[Applause.]
Which is just a really nice way of saying sorry I stole all your stuff.
Okay.
A lot has happened over the last 15 years.
Both good and bad.
But through it all, we're still here.
And if you forgive me for stealing your stuff, I hope that this will bring memories that not only bring a smile to your face, but remind you that life can just be good, and simple, and happy.
And I hope that we can all carry that into the future.
Bravo! Well said.
Yeah, cheers.
All right.
One of my old journals my goodness.
It says keep out.
Seriously! Because all of you guys My Christmas mints.
I used to give everyone their medicine.
Dr.
Kevin.
My crown, I forgot about this! Yeah, King Connor's back.
No! No, no Your head looks swollen.
It might just be the hair.
It's the watch that Trace gave me.
So sweet, wanna see? Look we're all twins.
It's the same.
Wow my dad's old flask.
Oh, why it's one of my childhood fairies from Ireland.
Guys, come see this.
She's been guarding everybody's memories the whole time.
Your turn.
Mr.
Fluffers I keep looking at the future I keep looking so far ahead But the only thing I see You remember him? Wow you remember.
I do.
I'm still holding onto memories Hey, single malt! - Uh-oh - This has aged very, very well.
[Laughing.]
It's good
You know, it is nice being back in in Nashville with you.
