The coach wanted him to run the offense
a certain way, that's what he'd do.
He didn't go outside the parameters,
which made him a great player.
Always that person that was amped up.

It was so amped up and hyped up,
it was one time we almost got off into it.

And you kind of had a pass
to get away from it.
Fortunately, we was good enough
that basketball snatched us.

We over there, and dude whoever

They hopped the fence, shot dude.
This fool Barney got him
in his hand, the dude head.
Listen, that was they
It was two friends.
- They were supposed to be friends.

And they got into it,
and we were coming out of the gym.
And so, I'm looking at it
to where the guy
He shot him. He fell.
And he stood over him.
And he shot him again.
[Joe] Are you serious?
- [John] On campus, bro.
- [Dris] We was right there.
I walked out, grabbed his jacket.
- Put the jacket over his head.
- [John] Over his head.
That fool Barney just sat there
while that fool passed away.

That was it,
and fools looked, and they just, uh
"Yeah, he got shot. He dead,"
and they just walked away. It was normal.
You know what's crazy 'bout that?
I went home and told my father.
He was oblivious to it.
- "It'll be all right."
- [John] Somebody just got shot.
- [Dris] "Go to school."
- 50 feet from us.
- Exactly.
- [John] He was like, "Yeah? Oh."
- [Dris chuckles]
- "Just stay out of the way."

this is where I grew up.
It's just [clicks teeth]
it is what it is.
Towards the tail end of high school,
I was out a little bit too much.
I thought I was cool. I thought I knew.
Then you think back,
man, you're just so fortunate
that nothing bad happened to me.
'80s was bad. That was bad times for me.
When I was, you know, middle-school kid,
you know, watching drive-bys.
It was no big deal
to see a drive-by, like, just happen.
I had a gun put to my head
right over here.
Literally, the dude walks up,
and he points.
And I heard the gun
hit the window just like this.
Just like that.
It tapped the window like that.
I'm over in the driver's
in the passenger seat.
I'm crying. Like, I can't believe it.
I'm like, thinking, like
[inhales deeply] I literally went
[groans] just like that.
Kinda clenched, like he was
about to shoot me.
You know, I'm just a teenager
at that time.
Not in gangs or nothing.
But that's what was around here.
I don't think it's that bad.
I'm not painting a picture of,
"It's awful everywhere you go."
But that's kind of
some of the things I lived through.
And sometimes we judge these young men
and say, "Why are you reacting so?
Why are you acting so?"
But these are some things
they've lived through.
[music continues]
[John] Even though they have
this arrogance or this certain pride,
or they act like they got it all together,
or they have this wall up,
and they don't want to open up,
I know that every one of those young men,
every one of them, are insecure.
Because they come from the same cloth
that I come from.
They've been rejected.
They've been disappointed.
They've been let down.
They've been told
they weren't good enough.
They've been told they washed up.
And they're afraid.
And I have to help them not be afraid.

I've been shooting for a while now.

my dad taught me how to do.

and he went throughout the league.
My dad went to Michigan.
That was my dream.
Go to Michigan
and get a national championship,
but I didn't get to go.
I didn't get the recruiting from there,
like, that I was expected to get.
[Cynthia] Sophomore year, he was ranked
top 100, and we were surprised about that.
We was like, "Wow."
We started getting calls, recruitment.
[Demetrius] My junior year,
my dad got a stroke.
I didn't know, actually, that he had one.
I just saw him
walking funny to the bathroom,
I was like, "Why is he walking funny?"
He didn't know what he had.
It was frightening,
'cause I didn't really understand it.
I'm not used to strokes.
People don't just have strokes.
So is he going to be okay?
[Cynthia] Now, his dad was
no longer at his games.
His dad was no longer at his practices.
I don't know if maybe
life would look different for him.
I don't know
if he lost passion because of it.
After that, actually, I had zero offers,
but a highlight tape got me to UIC,
to a D1 college.
[Demetrius] And I think it was
very hard for him in that first year.
When something is distracting you
from basketball, it's hard to play.
It's hard. I can't think about that.
I'm a very positive person.
I just can't think like that.
[Cynthia] There was no question
that he could play D1 ball.
All the coaches said,
"Hey. DC can play D1."
[Demetrius] We came to the decision
that it wasn't
the best place for me there at the time.
So I just came back, and now I'm here.
I just want to make sure that he sees me
get everything that I want,
'cause I know that's what he wants.
He's still alive.
At the end of the day,
I can call him on my phone,
he's gonna pick up
and have a conversation with me.
That's all I need from him.
I need to see him and be able to call him.
As long as we can do
those two things, I'm happy.
Stop moving your head.

[Cynthia] He's a unique kid.
From the moment he was conceived
[laughs]
he was bigger than life.
I was pregnant with my third daughter.
I was probably about 23,
and, um, I wanted to get my tubes tied.
The whole pregnancy I was like,
"Look, Doctor, I want my tubes tied.
I don't want to have any more kids."
So I had my daughter.
Next day, ready for surgery.
They get me all prepped up,
gave me something to sleep,
and I had this dream while asleep.
And it said that
you will have another child,
but it won't be with this husband.
And it will be a son.
And I woke up, and I said,
"No. I can't have the surgery.
Take me back to my room."
- [Cynthia] Then 17 years later, I meet DC.
- [inaudible]
And we had a son.
I went into labor at six months with him.
I wind up being hospitalized
for three days with him to stop my labor.
Every week, I wound up in the hospital
'cause he was trying to come out.
So, he has a will to live.
Every night, when he went to bed,
I would whisper in his ears,
"You are great."
"You are kind.
You are loving. You are patient."
"You are good
at anything you put your mind to."
'Cause I want that
to be in his subconscious.
And Lord Jesus.
It's in his subconscious. [chuckles]
That fool was a 16th dude,
and I just kept noticing him in a bad way.
- Good stuff was happening in a bad way.

I'm like, "Well, shoot. I would never
teach that, but it's working."

- Every practice, playing a video game.
To be honest, you need
a little video game with your team.

that, "Hey, I really want to do this."
And now, I see the burning desire for him.

Every time I'm looking for a sub
or lookin' who to sub in,
that dude's neck sticks straight out,
and he's leaning forward,
and he is ready to go.
I'm trying to catch his eye.
I'm trying to get him to look at me,
think about me.
Hey, I'm still here on the team.
Like, I want you to see me,
because I want to get in the game.
[Rob] I have no doubt that the best team
we can put on the court,
DC would be one of those five.
Honestly, athletically, he just can
do things that other kids can't do.
I love him. I absolutely love him.

that thinks the best of himself,
and we just have to steer him
in a direction
that's gonna help him be more successful.

and that's his mom. She was able to come.
Her first time coming back to church
after her brain surgery.
That was in '96.
So she was '96.
- [Candace] 'Cause your dad passed when?
- '98.

- And she, uh
- He actually took care of her.
- [Candace] He took care of her.
- Then he died in his sleep.
- [John] Then he passed.
[Candace] She had a brain tumor,
and then she also had breast cancer.
Yeah, that's when I saw
a different level of love.
He'd take her for walks
while she was on that
'Cause she came out
of surgery on the cane.
Then just right when she was
They was able to go out and do all that.
- Right.
- We all went on a vacation.
- Yeah. We did.
- Came back, and he
Then he passed in his sleep.
And that was real hard when he passed.
[John] Mm-hmm.
And, uh, he was taking care of my sister.
And so that was hard.
Caregivers kind of go first.
[Candace] Mm-hmm.
- [interviewer] Was your dad ever a coach?
- Wasn't a coach.
Uh, but he was always there.
He was always there.

- I remember him screaming.

You know, my dad was on the other end
with his fishing hat on.

I didn't know, actually, that he had one.
I just saw him
walking funny to the bathroom,
I was like, "Why is he walking funny?"
He didn't know what he had.
It was frightening,
'cause I didn't really understand it.
I'm not used to strokes.
People don't just have strokes.
So is he going to be okay?
[Cynthia] Now, his dad was
no longer at his games.
His dad was no longer at his practices.
I don't know if maybe
life would look different for him.
I don't know
if he lost passion because of it.
After that, actually, I had zero offers,
but a highlight tape got me to UIC,
to a D1 college.
[Demetrius] And I think it was
very hard for him in that first year.
When something is distracting you
from basketball, it's hard to play.
It's hard. I can't think about that.
I'm a very positive person.
I just can't think like that.
[Cynthia] There was no question
that he could play D1 ball.
All the coaches said,
"Hey. DC can play D1."
[Demetrius] We came to the decision
that it wasn't
the best place for me there at the time.
So I just came back, and now I'm here.
I just want to make sure that he sees me
get everything that I want,
'cause I know that's what he wants.
He's still alive.
At the end of the day,
I can call him on my phone,
he's gonna pick up
and have a conversation with me.
That's all I need from him.
I need to see him and be able to call him.
As long as we can do
those two things, I'm happy.

From the moment he was conceived

I was pregnant with my third daughter.

I don't want to have any more kids."
So I had my daughter.
Next day, ready for surgery.
They get me all prepped up,
gave me something to sleep,
and I had this dream while asleep.
And it said that
you will have another child,
but it won't be with this husband.
And it will be a son.
And I woke up, and I said,
"No. I can't have the surgery.
Take me back to my room."
- [Cynthia] Then 17 years later, I meet DC.

And we had a son.
I went into labor at six months with him.
I wind up being hospitalized
for three days with him to stop my labor.
Every week, I wound up in the hospital
'cause he was trying to come out.
So, he has a will to live.
Every night, when he went to bed,
I would whisper in his ears,
"You are great."
"You are kind.
You are loving. You are patient."
"You are good
at anything you put your mind to."
'Cause I want that
to be in his subconscious.
And Lord Jesus.

and I just kept noticing him in a bad way.

And that was real hard when he passed.
