First Steps

1
[STATIC]
Sure, we, we've
known each other
since we were kids.
We were
like best friends
or something.
I guess people change.
[SIREN WAILING]
First day back at school.
I never knew so much could
change in just a couple of
Was that
Nothing.
[STAMMERING]
It was nothing.
[ALL GASPING]
[SCREAMING]
[ALARM BLARING]
[GASPS]
Now this is what
I call a big score!
Funny. Thought you had
to know how to count
before you could
keep score.
[GROANS]
Oh, no!
Gotta love a villain
who can accessorize.
What do ya know?
Guess I really am
a hardened criminal.
[LAUGHING] Now,
[GRUNTING] how about a little trim?
Livin' on the edge
Fighting crime
Spinning webs
Swingin' from
the highest ledge
He could leap
above our heads
Villains on the rise
And the city's victimized
Looking up
with no surprise
Arriving
in the speed of time

Are you sure
I look good
in this light?
You look good. [CLEARING THROAT]
First, a big thank you
for introducing me
to my man Rand.
Yeah. Thanks.
[GRUNTING]
[SIRENS WAILING
IN THE DISTANCE]
SANDMAN:
[GROANING]
My big score.
[GIGGLING]
Okay, what's
that about?
Oh, haven't you heard?
They're a couple.
Oh, no, they're not!
[BELL RINGING] Lizzie, I can't
I won't let you
do this!
Breaking up with Flash
was one thing, but
Sal, stop.
Let me be happy, okay?
It's not just
me and Petey.
My big brother's back
Mark's back? Tight!
[STUDENTS WHISPERING]
I hear he was
five months in juvie.
It was, uh,
six, actually.
[GASPING] Hey, Mark.
Long time
[STAMMERING]
I mean not that
it's been that long.
Easy Seymour, chill.
It's sludge
under the bridge, bro.
[WHISPERING]
Listen, Mark,
I got six to one
on a sure thing!
You in?
I don't do that anymore.
Well, do you have
to hold his hand?
You're turning off
our entire demographic!
You used
to hold my hand.
Still do, babe.
Oh, Kenny! What?
[BOTH LAUGHING]
Who needs her?
Hey, man.
Name that cutie.
Sha Shan Nguyen.
Sophomore.
She's in your
Bio class, man.
Oh, she's in
my bio class,
all right.
So, Sha Shan,
word is you don't
have an invite to
the hottest party in town.
Birthday bash
for Midtown's
football hero, moi.
And lucky you gets
to go as moi date.
You can, uh,
thank me at the party.
I can't get Eddie
out of my head.
But I swung past so quickly
it could have been anyone
or no one.
[GRUNTING] [GRUNTING]
Harry! Hey, Pete.
[WHIMPERING]
Not exactly the greeting
I was expecting,
but who'd have guessed
you'd take up Kung Fu
while I was gone?
Sorry, man, sorry. Uh,
when did you get back?
Last night. I Harry!
Hey, Gwen, um
Man, I've missed you.
I mean, both of you.
[STAMMERING]
Harry, you remember Liz.
Well, we're, um
So I gather.
Congrats!
[BELL RINGING]
[STUDENTS GROANING]
You coming, Pete?
Don't want to miss
Principal Davis's
always riveting
"Start of Semester speech."
[SHUDDERS]
[MUSIC PLAYING] Great memories, huh?
You and me,
always giving 100%,
and then giving
a little more
to get the win!
[JAZZ MUSIC PLAYING FAINTLY]
[EXHALES]
Surprised you'd show
your face
without anything sparkly
to make it palatable.
Aw, come on, Hammerhead,
just give me another shot.
Well, maybe
I got a couple ideas.
[HORNS HONKING]
And no tatertoddlers
will be served
in the cafeteria
until we go
one month without
a food fight.
[STUDENTS GROANING]
Now, I'd like
to introduce
this semester's
two guest instructors.
Directing this year's
school play,
we're honored
to have Broadway star
Sinjin Devereaux.
[STUDENTS CLAPPING]
And conducting
a special weekly
Criminology Seminar,
Captain George Stacy
of the New York Police
Department.
Give it up for the man. [STUDENTS CLAPPING]
You must be proud.
I'd be a little prouder
if I wasn't convinced
he took the job
to keep a closer
eye on me.
Well, you can't
blame him for that.
Stop it.
No, really.
When I was taking
the Green,
you were the only
one who noticed
I was in trouble
and tried to help.
[BELL RINGING] All right,
that wraps up
Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!
No running! No shoving!
Uh, Gwen, um
I got an invite to
Flash's birthday party.
And
I don't suppose you'd,
uh, be my date?
Date?
[CHUCKLES NERVOUSLY]
Like a datedate?Yeah. Datedate.
Datedatedate.
Your call.
Sure. Why not?
So, you guys
wanna double?
Sorry, Flash's ex,
remember?
[CHUCKLING]
I wasn't invited.
Um, I was.
[STAMMERING]
Not that I'm
planning on going.
Wow. He knows
we're a couple,
and he still
invited you.
I guess
he's cool with it.
Yeah, right.
Flash Thompson
is growing as a person.
Well, what's
your explanation?
Then it's settled.
This Saturday,
we're a foursome!
Great. Great.
Yee-haw!
Wow, that was feeble.
Well, what's your
problem, Pete?
I mean, life's good.
Aunt May's getting
stronger every day.
You finally got
a girlfriend.
Maybe not the one
you figured on, but still.
And, hey, Harry's back.
[SIGHING] I just hope
he can stay off
the Globulin Green.
Last thing I need is
[IMITATING GOBLIN]
the return of
the Green Goblin.
Only thing more
horrifying is
[IMITATING GOBLIN]
double date at
Flash Thompson's. Or
Eddie Brock?
[ALARM BLARING]
The alarm
It's coming from
the museum.
But Eddie
Gone.
Man, I'm losing it.
Goblin. Venom.
Who's next?
Sandman.
[GRUNTING]
How? How are you
always wherever
I'm doin' a job?
What have you got,
some kind of
spider sense
or something?
It's funny
you should say
[GROANING]
Ah, great.
Needle in a haystack.
I suppose it would be
a tad irresponsible
to smash 'em all
just to find Sandman.
Hi. Thanks for allowing me
to share your special day.
You will always mean
so much to me.
Has anyone seen Petey?
[COUGHING]
You keep gettin'
in my way!
Now I got a buyer
willing to pay top
black market dollar
for the Urn of
Morpheus here.
And there's no way
I'm missin' out
on my big score!
Are you taller?
[LAUGHING]
A little trick
I picked up in prison.
I kept losin'
bits of sand,
so my lawyers
made 'em feed me
raw silicates.
I can absorb as much
of the stuff as I want!
But that's not
my only trick.
Sandy, you're pathetic.
I'm pathetic? Totally.
With your powers,
you could do
some real good.
Help people.
But you waste it all
on the same stupid crimes
Flint Marko committed.
Gee, do you really
think I could be
a hero like you?
Well, yeah
[STAMMERING]
I mean, with great
power comes great
Gullibility! [GRUNTING]
[LAUGHING] [SIRENS WAILING]
So long, chump.
[ENGINE REVVING] [HORN HONKING]
[TIRES SCREECH]
Uh, nice car, Har.
[CHUCKLING]
Welcome home
present from Mom.
[SHIVERING]
Hurry up, Petey.
It's freezing.
Then why put
the top down?
If we're showing up
in a convertible,
we should show up
in a convertible.
Okay.
Uh, turn left
at the corner.
Now, stop. [TIRES SQUEALING]
Whoa.
When you said
Flash lived just
around the corner,
I didn't know you meant
"just around the corner."
Hey, Big Guy,
ready for your
birthday kiss?
Who invited
the Geek Squad?
Why is Puny Parker
crashing my party?
Uh, you sent me
an invitation?
Uh-uh. Sending invites
wasn't my job, it was
Mom!
Well, of course
I invited Peter.
After all,
he's your best friend.
That was
in nursery school!
Flash was part
of the nerd herd?
Who do you think
gave Eugene
his nickname?
And, hey, it wasn't
because he ran fast.
I was four, okay?
Mom!
[SNICKERING]
You call that a castle? Yeah!
BOY 1: [STAMMERING]
Kid's a witch! BOY 2: Yeah!
Mr. Sandman?
Yes? Thanks.
Don't mention it, kid.
Now run along.
It's gettin' cold out.
Now, you're nice
to little girls?
I knew you
was going soft.
It had nothin'
to do with
the girl!
I I wanted to
torment the teens!
Just gimme my payoff.
That's it?What did ya expect?
That's what's left
after the Big Man
took his cut,
and the Master
Planner collected
his "loanout fee"
for your
supervillain services.
[GROANS] This was supposed
to be my big score!
Then you're not
thinking big enough.
[SHIP HORN BLOWS]That oil tanker?
Find a way to stop it.
I got frogmen ready
to drain it dry.
All that crude
Now that would make
for a big score.
Captain, aren't we
getting a little
close to the beach?
Looks like the beach
is getting closer to us!
[ALARM WAILING]
[ELECTRICAL CRACKLING]
[MAN SCREAMING]
You'll wanna
abandon ship
Now!
Your hair's
gotten longer.
It's nice.
Other than that,
doesn't seem
like much has
changed while
I was gone.
Just a few things.
How come those two
are suddenly so cozy?
Whoa, whoa, Pete, chill.
You don't get
to be jealous.
You're with Li
ROSIE: Go ahead, Hobie.
Sorry, Hobes.
Invoking best
friend privilege!
See, Flash
is my main man!
Never would have
won State without him.
And, dude,
did he take a hit!
Probably destroyed
his football career,
his chance at
a college scholarship
Well, everything.
Kenny! Ow!
Uh Hey, wanna see
how many chips
I can fit in my mouth?
You mean in addition
to your foot?
Did either of you
see Eddie Brock?
Nope. Why?
He's gone.
Assuming he was
ever here.
MAN ON RADIO:
Breaking news.
The notorious Sandman
has been spotted attacking
an oil tanker
at Rockaway Beach.
We'll have more
on the hour.
In the meantime,
here's an oldie
but a goodie,
from theChordettes.
Okay, Sandman,
I know you're here!
And you're going down!
I don't care
how big you get.
Oh, really?
[LAUGHING MANIACALLY]
Yeah, Mom, of course
I'm having fun.
The party rocks.
Everyone's here.
Almost.
Hey, Rand,
you seen Sha Shan?
RAND: Sorry, Romeo.
[SIGHING]
I don't get it.
I'm Flash Thompson.
Hero. Legend.
Girls don't stand
the Flash up.
They'd jump at
a chance to
Mom! Turn that off!
Wow, Sandy,
I know a basketball
team that could really
use a guy your size.
Can you dribble,
or do you just drool?
Mostly, I slam-dunk.
[SPIDER-MAN GRUNTING]
[GRUNTING]
That lovetap's
just the beginning,
Web Head.
Oh, great, how am I
supposed to
beat up a beach?
Yeah, I can see.
Call it off.
Marko.
Once a mook,
always a mook.
Get me outta here.
[LAUGHING]
Is that all you got?
Hey, it worked
on Goliath!
Don't suppose you'd
consider picking on
someone your own size?
[GRUNTING] Nope.
Been wanting to
bug-squash you
since the day we met.
Okay, how tough
can this be?
All Jack needed
was a beanstalk
and an ax.
No!
Venom!
He's got the Symbiote [ALARM BLARING]
Sandy! Behind you!
Oh, yeah,
like I'd fall for that.
Abandon ship! I'm trying!
Look, tanker!
[SCREAMING]
[GROANING]
Fire. On an oil tanker.
Man, this just
keeps getting better.
Get back!
Gotta get you
off this tub!
It's too late.
She's gonna blow
before she sinks.
Sandman, stop.
You saved them?
I was just in it
for the bucks.
[STAMMERING]
I never meant
for this to happen!
Wait! Sandy!
Let go! Whoa!
[PEOPLE SHOUTING] [GRUNTING]
The heat from
the explosion, it must
have glazed him.
You wanted
a big score, Marko?
Far as I'm concerned,
you just scored about
as big as a man can.
I gotta be sure.
This is where
I buried the Symbiote.
Under a ton of cement.
And it's undisturbed.
So I didn't see Venom.
Maybe Eddie's back,
maybe it's all in my head.
Either way,
without the Symbiote,
Venom's gone for good.
Now, my biggest problem
will be explaining
where I went to Liz.
Knew if I made you
paranoid enough,
you'd lead me right
to the one I love.
Thanks, bro.
Hey, Flash,
hope you don't mind
me crashing your party.
Truth is, I plan on
crashing a lot of parties
this year.
So, if you run
into my bro, Pete,
tell him we will
see him soon.
