Billy The Kid (2022) s02e06 Episode Script
The Plea
1
[BILLY] Previously, on Billy the Kid.
I'm ridin' with a good friend of yours.
- You know Jesse?
- Sure I do.
- [GRUNTING]
- I will never leave!
- [GUNSHOT]
- No! No, no, no.
You're arrestin' me?
Sheriff Brady just wants to talk to ya.
Major Murphy, our boss,
told me to go up there.
I had no alternative but to shoot.
[BRADY] So it was self-defense?
Maybe he goes away for a while.
Gets re-educated. Comes back
out the other side as a lawman.
Billy got real friendly
with Del Tobosco's daughter,
Dulcinea.
- [GUNSHOT]
- [SHOUTING]
If Mr. Catron wants my belongings,
everything, my horses, my
cattle he can have them.
Get out of the way.
- Devils, all of you!
- [GUNSHOT]
[GUNFIRE]
[DULCINEA] They killed everyone, Billy.
My whole family.
One of the gunmen
pretended to be you, Billy.
[BILLY] I will avenge your
family's death, I swear.
Why are all these men here?
Because we're gonna take over the town.
The people of Lincoln are
tired of the lawlessness
- [GUNFIRE]
- and the chaos.
They want change. Now is the time.
I told you I didn't understand
why you needed to go to war.
Now I do.
Most of you will also know Juan Patron
as a leading member of
the Hispanic community.
He's very important.
[SPEAKING SPANISH]
This is Judge John Wilson, Billy.
It was he who issued the
warrant for the arrest
of those responsible for
John Tunstall's murder.
[BILLY] So after all, there
are people on our side.
Mr. McSween, would you like a gun?
I was a pastor all these
years and I've sworn off
ever using a gun myself.
Hola, Manuela.
This is Señorita Dulcinea Del Tobosco.
She needs somewhere safe
to hole up for a while.
I'm hoping she can stay here with you.
[WALZ] Mr. Catron has just appointed
a new sheriff in Lincoln County.
A sheriff who's pledged to
drive each and every gunman
and outlaw out of this territory
and restore law and order.
I suggest you co-operate with him.
You and me, we're partners here
and all I want is nothing more
than to see that Billy the fuckin' Kid
hangin' on the end of a rope.
[THEME MUSIC]
Yep?
Jesse.
Take a seat.
How you gettin' on?
All right.
Sworn in my deputies.
Gettin' to know my way around.
What about you? You any
closer to findin' Billy?
Tryin'. Had some leads.
Reckon he pulled his camp
way back, out of the way.
What do you think he's planning to do?
[SCOFFS] Think about
the most unlikely thing,
- that's probably what he'll do.
- Mm-hmm.
- Mm-hmm.
- Like what?
He's been on the defensive.
He's reacting to things.
My guess?
He'd rather be on the offense.
Otherwise, he knows he's
going to get hunted down.
We best be vigilant, then.
You know what? I can
spare you some of my men
to help with your hunt for him.
Got to keep the pressure on him.
Thanks. Appreciate that.
[SNIFFS]
I gotta say, it's strange seeing you
with that sheriff's badge on.
[UNSETTLING MUSIC]
Things were very
different back then, Jesse.
I was a lost soul.
Didn't know which way to turn.
You ever felt that way?
[CHUCKLES]
I can't say I have, Sheriff.
You're born, and one day
- [HAND THUDS TABLE]
- you die.
That's all.
I wish you a good day.
[FOOTSTEPS RECEDING]
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
[HORSE NEIGHING]
All right. We're takin' over the town.
We're gonna restore law
and order in Lincoln,
but we have to take
out The House to do it.
We're gonna ride in
hard through Main Street,
splitting into three smaller groups
to take the Wortley Hotel,
the Tunstall Store.
Juan and the Mexicans,
you'll take the downtown area.
From these strategic positions,
I believe we can cut off
the house and drive 'em out,
liberating the people of Lincoln
and makin' the town safe.
We just have to watch
for Sheriff Garrett.
I don't have a read on him yet.
Yeah, well we do know
that he's lent Jesse
a couple of his deputies, and they're
searching the county for us right now.
That's another reason
for moving into town now.
Right. Let's get to it.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
[WAITE] Let's go.
[SPEAKING SPANISH]
So have a few of your men come through
and flank 'em from the hillside.
[SPEAKING SPANISH]
[TENSE MUSIC]
[HORSES NEIGHING]
Whoa.
Everyone to your positions. Go!
- George, take the roof.
- [GEORGE] On it.
What the hell's goin' on here?
I'm sorry, Sam.
We're talking over
your hotel for a while.
Keep 'em safe, boys.
Hey.
What happened with the letter
that Judge Wilson sent
to the congressman?
Warren Angel has yet to complete
his fact-finding mission.
But he's issued an interim report
which suggests he's already
uncovered possible evidence
of corrupt and illegal activities
by both Governor Axtell
and Thomas Catron.
Okay.
So you're sayin' there's
still a chance the law
could be on our side?
Maybe.
But I wouldn't count on it, Billy.
You know, we can't wait for it.
We're doing the right
thing here, McSween.
[UNSETTLING MUSIC]
[SPEAKING SPANISH]
[SNIFFLING]
[DISTANT HORSE NEIGHING]
Watch yourself.
[DISTANT DOG BARKING]
Be on your ready, boys.
[DOOR CLOSES]
[WIND HOWLING]
[HOOVES PATTERING]
What do you want?
We've taken over the town.
We want to give you all a chance
to get out before it's too late.
We don't want a gunfight
if we don't need one.
We're just here to restore the peace.
Well, uh, we're gonna have to
talk to Mr. Riley about that.
[BILLY] You talk to
Mr. Riley, Mr. Murphy,
anybody else who might bring
this business to a close.
Until then, we're not going anywhere.
[DOOR CREAKS]
Close that fuckin' door.
- [DOOR CLOSES]
- What did they say?
They uh, they said
they'd taken the town,
and they want us to leave right away.
The hell they have!
They're fuckin' lying.
And you're standing here like patsies.
Billy the Kid's right
fuckin' down there.
Shoot him. Go ahead, shoot him!
[MAN] Come on, boys.
[MAN] Smash the windows! Hey!
[GUNFIRE]
- [SHOUTING]
- [HORSE NEIGHING]
[MAN 1] Watch out!
[GUNFIRE]
- [HORSE NEIGHING]
- [GRUNTING]
[BILLY] Charlie!
Take cover, Charlie!
[GUNFIRE]
- [GUNSHOT]
- Goddamn!
- [GUNFIRE]
- [INDISTINCT SHOUTING]
- [MAN 2] Get him out of here!
- [MAN 3] They're on the move!
Get on!
- [SINISTER MUSIC]
- Let's go!
- [GUNFIRE]
- Go, boys. Go!
Hyah! Hyah! Hyah! Hyah!
[MEN GROANING]
What the fuck are you
doin' lookin' at me?
Get some men down
there, find the others.
I need to know what
the fuck is happening.
- Sure thing, Mr. Riley.
- "Sure thing, Mr. Riley."
[DOOR CLOSES]
Oh, for fuck's sakes.
[TENSE MUSIC]
You ready?
They'll be comin' soon.
Yeah.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[WAITE] On the corner.
[BILLY] He's got a gun on George.
[GEORGE] Put that rifle down!
[WAITE] They ain't stopping, Billy.
[PAINED GRUNT]
- [GUNFIRE]
- [GRUNTING]
- [MAN 1] They're on the roof!
- [CHARLIE] Billy, on your right!
[PAINED GRUNT]
- [GRUNTING]
- [MAN 2] Take cover!
[CHARLIE] Coming around the back way!
Go, go, go, go!
[GUNSHOT]
[GUNSHOT ECHOING]
[SOFT EERIE MUSIC]
Woo-hoo! Yeah, we did it!
I did it!
Send 'em all to hell! [LAUGHING]
Woo-wee!
Hey. Don't touch the dead.
Why?
Shut the fuck up, will ya?
This ain't a game. Get inside.
Everybody, back to your stations.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
[PANTING]
Hyah!
Whoa!
Hey. What's goin' on?
Mr. Riley.
Where in the fuck were you?
It would seem that the Regulators
control most of the downtown
and the Mexican quarter.
Jesse's still out lookin' for The Kid?
Yes, and I've asked him
to come back immediately.
And in the meantime ?
[BREATHES DEEPLY]
I'm calling in my deputies.
As soon as they arrive,
I'll send them to the Tunstall Store.
If you need to kill a snake, Mr. Riley,
you gotta cut off its head.
Look, I advise you not
to panic at this point.
It may not look like it,
but we still hold all the
best cards in the pack.
[DOOR OPENS]
[DOOR CLOSES]
- Hup, hup!
- Hyah! Hyah!
[MAN] Tracks are leadin' north
to the old South Spring Ranch.
- To the woods!
- Hyah! Hyah!
[TENSE MUSIC]
[BABY CRYING]
Folks, you'll be safer outta town.
It's just for a few days.
[TOWNSFOLK 1] You can take
the wagon with the kids, okay?
[TOWNSFOLK 2] I know we'll be back soon.
[TOWNSFOLK CHATTER INDISTINCTLY]
- [GEORGE] Just for a few days.
- [TOWNSFOLK 2] Don't worry.
[KNOCKING AT DOOR]
[INDISTINCT WHISPERING]
[GUNS CLICKING]
- [SUE] It's Sue McSween.
- [WAITE] Stand down, boys.
[DOOR OPENS]
Sue!
I had to come and help.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
Can someone please
move these tables here?
[MAN] All right.
[SUE] I need some fresh water.
Can you please find me
some blankets? Thank you.
Gentlemen, these badges mean something.
Okay? They're badges of honor.
Now, all of you have been
given the great responsibility
of upholding the law and
administering justice.
These are difficult times.
You will need courage and fortitude,
but I am placing my trust in you,
and I know that you will repay it.
Now
which ones of you consider
yourselves to be good shots?
All right.
I want you three to take up positions
along the edge of town before sunrise,
by the Tunstall Store.
And I want the rest
of you to go surround
the Regulators' positions downtown.
But I want all of you
to move in a wide circle.
They'll be lookin' for you.
So don't let anyone
see you. You understand?
[DEPUTIES MURMUR IN AGREEMENT]
Good. Good.
Watch out for those
shooters on the roof.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
[LAUGHING]
- Final word?
- [LAUGHING]
Hey, Billy.
[LAUGHING]
- Well, they know we're here now.
- [MEN LAUGHING]
We caught them by surprise today,
but tomorrow, they
come back twice as hard.
My guess is first thing,
they'll be sharpshooters
around the town.
Herrera.
Juan says you're his best shot.
All right. First thing, you prove it.
You take four others, and
you find rooftop positions
and you take out those sharpshooters.
The rest of you just
know that if they try
a head-on attack, we
have more firepower.
[MAN] Damn right.
All right, everybody get some sleep.
We're gonna need it.
Charlie, you take first watch.
[BOTTLES CLINK]
[SOFT MUSIC]
Dulcinea?
Dulcinea?
Yes?
[SPEAKING SPANISH]
[CRYING]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[GUNMAN] Looks like they cleared out.
Hyah, hyah!
Whoa!
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Billy's taken over the town.
Boys, let's get back there!
[ALL SHOUTING]
Hyah! Hyah! Come on!
[DOG WHINING]
[MCSWEEN] It's Tunstall's dog.
McSween.
Hey! Hey!
Hey!
[WHISTLING]
[DOG WHINING]
Here, boy.
Come on.
- [GUNSHOT]
- [DOG YELPS]
- [BILLY] Let's go!
- [WAITE] Here we go, boys!
- [GUNFIRE]
- [INDISTINCT SHOUTING]
[PAINED GRUNT]
- [GUNFIRE]
- [INDISTINCT SHOUTING]
[WAITE] Shooters in the grainery!
[PAINED GRUNT, SHOUTING IN PAIN]
- [GUNFIRE]
- [SHOUTING]
[SPEAKING SPANISH]
[PAINED GRUNT]
[SCREAMING IN PAIN]
- It's okay. It's okay.
- [MAN 1] On the second floor!
[GUNSHOTS]
[MAN 2] Stay down, boys!
[PAINED GRUNT]
[MAN 2] There next!
[SHOUTS]
[GRUNTS]
[MAN 2] Eyes around the corner!
[PATRON SPEAKING SPANISH]
[GRUNTS]
- [MEN SHOUTING]
- [GUNFIRE]
[SCREAMING]
[GRUNTS]
[GUNFIRE CEASES]
[MAN 2] All clear!
[BREATHING HEAVILY]
[HORSES NEIGHING]
I have to say, I'm mighty
glad to see you folks.
Well, you know, Sheriff
Garrett's deputies
are attacking Tunstall's
store from the north side.
They've got Billy and most of
the leaders holed up inside.
They're the enemy. To be frank,
the Mexicans working for
them are worth nothing.
Maybe you should come down
there with us, Mr. Riley.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
Juan tells me they cleared the deputies
from the bottom of town, so
at this moment, we control that area.
And of course we control
the Tunstall Store
and the surrounding area.
But it's time to stop
defending and start attacking.
Tomorrow, at noon,
I want Juan and his men to join us here,
and together, we'll
storm the Murphy Store
and drive Riley and his men out of town.
[MEN MURMURING]
[BREATHES DEEPLY]
[BILLY] We in agreement?
[MEN MURMUR IN AGREEMENT]
Mr. Riley, you have the money.
You can put up so we can hire more guns.
John Kenny's a day and a half away.
We need to face facts!
The Regulators with the Mexicans
constitute a significant
force of around 60 fighters.
Right now, that's a third
more than we can muster.
- Mexicans as fighters
- Mr. Riley.
What's more, gentlemen,
is their core consists
of a dozen or more
first-rate gunmen.
Not just Billy the Kid,
but Waite, Coe, Bowdre, and others.
They're not gonna walk away.
Sheriff's right.
If The Kid wants it
he knows where we are.
[MAN] Yeah, damn right he does.
Unless
we change the odds.
[SOFT EERIE MUSIC]
[HORSE GRUNTS]
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
Hold up, Sheriff.
Colonel Dudley, it's the new sheriff.
Mr. Pat Garrett.
I'm sorry to call on you
so late, Colonel Dudley.
First of all, I, uh,
should have come up here
sooner to pay my respect.
All right, Sheriff.
Governor Axtell wrote me
and told me about your appointment.
And I can well imagine
that these early weeks
have been trying ones.
Please, have a seat.
Thank you, sir.
I'm sure you are aware
that a group of gunmen and thieves,
calling themselves the Regulators
and led by the outlaw Billy the Kid,
are trying to take over the town,
remove its lawful authorities.
Recently, there has been a
great increase in killings.
Yes, I'm aware of all that, Sheriff.
Well, out of desperation, sir,
those lawful parties, myself included,
have reconstituted ourselves
as the "Law and Order Party."
And it is on behalf of that party
I've come up here tonight
to ask for your help.
Well, you're not the
first sheriff in Lincoln
to ask for the military's help.
The fact is, the U.S. military
is severely constrained
by the Constitution
from interfering with
local and civic disputes.
Quite frankly, were here to
control the Indian population,
not feuding citizens.
I understand.
But, uh, what we have now in Lincoln
is not a civic dispute.
It's butchery and mayhem.
I implore you to act
before it's too late.
I have here a proclamation
from Governor Axtell.
It commands all armed men to disband,
return to their homes,
and not act as vigilantes
so long as U.S. Army can be summoned.
So
can I take it, Colonel,
that you will interfere
on behalf of the
forces of law and order?
[SIGHS]
No, Sheriff Garrett.
You see, my job here
is always to weigh out the
advantages and disadvantages
of involving the army in civil society.
And when we do, we
often earn the ill-will
of the population, and that, Sheriff
is a matter of great consideration.
Let me tell you that unless
you interfere right away,
there will be a massacre
on the streets of Lincoln.
Don't you think that
will earn you and the Army
the ill-will of the people?
[UNSETTLING MUSIC]
I wish you a good evening.
[MEN GRUNTING]
[JESSE] Beckwith!
- Beckwith?
- Yeah!
- Oil!
- Hammer it in!
[MAN] Let's go! Let's go!
[TICKING LOUDLY]
[SIGHS]
I'll pray for you, Billy.
We must never surrender.
I believe that now.
We're fighting for a good cause.
A noble cause.
May God give you the victory.
Thank you.
I do hope you're right.
So
[GUN CLICKING]
What are you gonna do?
Do you think the Regulators
are strong enough to attack us here?
Yeah, they are.
Then what are ya gonna do?
Riley, steady.
I reckon you boys should
take a look outside.
[SIGHS]
[TENSE PERCUSSIVE MUSIC]
Ya!
Good man, Sheriff Garrett. Good man!
Colonel Dudley.
Colonel Dudley.
Thank you.
You came just in time.
[LT. SMITH] Company, halt!
It's all right, Sheriff.
Just doing our duty.
Sheriff.
Which men do you want arrested, exactly?
I want the whole damn business.
Sheriff Garrett, let
me be perfectly clear.
[HORSE NEIGHING]
I did not come to Lincoln
today to assist you in any way.
I'm here to ensure the safety
of the women and children.
The men can take care of themselves.
But if anyone, and I stress anyone,
fires upon my company,
I will return fire
immediately. Understood?
Colonel Dudley, I am Alexander McSween.
I act as attorney for the Regulators,
those who are fighting
for an end to corruption
here in Lincoln. While I am gratified
that your troopers will remain neutral,
I must point out that
among those supporting you
are several men charged with
the murder of John Tunstall
and for whose immediate
arrest I carry warrants,
signed by a Judge John Wilson.
And I have warrants for the arrest
of those responsible for
the murder of Sheriff Brady.
Some of whom are standing
right over there, Mr. McSween.
Gentlemen, I am not here
to arrest anyone today.
I came here to restore the peace.
I am ordering all of
you to go home, now.
Leave immediately.
This town is under permanent curfew.
Find anybody out on
the streets past hours
without permission or a damn good reason
will be arrested. Understood?
Clear?
- Lieutenant?
- Sir.
[LT. SMITH] Cavalry,
cordon to the south.
Infantry, let's clear
the civilians, gently.
[CROWD MURMURING]
[JESSE] Woo!
[ANIMALS HOWLING]
[CHEERING]
All right, let's raise a
glass to Colonel Nathan Dudley
and the U.S. Cavalry.
Let's go, boys!
[ALL CHEERING]
And don't forget Pat Garrett.
He's a good man. Raise a
glass to Sheriff Pat Garrett.
[ALL CHEERING]
[UPBEAT FIDDLE MUSIC PLAYING]
That's yours.
Ah
So what do you gotta say for yourself?
Well, what do you mean?
What do I mean?
Pat Garrett just about saved your ass.
You personally have done jack shit.
That's what I mean.
[TENSE MUSIC]
[DOOR OPENS]
- Well?
- They've put up their tents
in a field just below Murphy's store.
[MCSWEEN] They've won.
Murphy and Riley. They've won.
No, they haven't. Colonel Dudley
is the real law in this country.
And when we explain to him
It won't make any
difference, Mrs. McSween.
[MRS. MCSWEEN] The Colonel
swore he wasn't taking sides.
He's only here to restore the peace.
I don't know what
happened. I didn't think
the army was gonna get involved.
They're not supposed to get involved.
No one saw this comin'.
I didn't see this comin'.
I'll be right back.
Billy.

[UPBEAT FIDDLE MUSIC]
Where's Jesse?
I don't know. Why?
Leave. Now.
We need to make plans. Now's our chance.
For what?
To make new moves!
- I'll find him, Mr. Riley.
- Do.
[TENSE MUSIC]
[CREAKING]
[FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING]
[THUNDER RUMBLING]
[GUN CLICKING]
Hello, Billy.
Pat.
It's good to see you.
Really?
[CLEARS THROAT]
[GUN THUDS ON FLOOR]
Look, I don't want you to think
that we're on opposite sides here.
Because we're not.
I want what you want.
Oh, you want justice too?
Of course I want justice.
You want the end of the
House? The end of the Rings?
I can't control that,
Billy. I'm just the sheriff.
Well, as just the sheriff,
I presume you're gonna stay
neutral in this whole business
and not pick sides with the House.
Billy, it is so much more
complicated than that.
The fuck it is.
You can't fight the system.
And now we're talking.
If there's no law, there's only anarchy.
And that is in no one's interest.
You know, that sounds like
it's right outta their handbook.
Billy
[CLEARS THROAT]
You have to give up.
You can't win.
When are you gonna learn
this ain't a game for me?
I don't care about winning.
All I care about is that for too long,
a few corrupt assholes in Santa Fe,
like Axtell and Catron,
been pullin' all the
strings down here in Lincoln,
bleedin' these poor people dry.
And if they speak up,
if anyone speaks up,
they're silenced.
And if they can't be silenced,
well, then, they're killed.
We're just tryin' to change it, Pat.
But we need your help.
You have been given a
badge. You have the power.
Use it.

to take the Wortley Hotel,
the Tunstall Store.
Juan and the Mexicans,
you'll take the downtown area.
From these strategic positions,
I believe we can cut off
the house and drive 'em out,
liberating the people of Lincoln
and makin' the town safe.
We just have to watch
for Sheriff Garrett.
I don't have a read on him yet.
Yeah, well we do know
that he's lent Jesse
a couple of his deputies, and they're
searching the county for us right now.
That's another reason
for moving into town now.
Right. Let's get to it.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
[WAITE] Let's go.
[SPEAKING SPANISH]
So have a few of your men come through
and flank 'em from the hillside.
[SPEAKING SPANISH]
[TENSE MUSIC]
[HORSES NEIGHING]
Whoa.
Everyone to your positions. Go!
- George, take the roof.
- [GEORGE] On it.
What the hell's goin' on here?
I'm sorry, Sam.
We're talking over
your hotel for a while.
Keep 'em safe, boys.
Hey.
What happened with the letter
that Judge Wilson sent
to the congressman?
Warren Angel has yet to complete
his fact-finding mission.
But he's issued an interim report
which suggests he's already
uncovered possible evidence
of corrupt and illegal activities
by both Governor Axtell
and Thomas Catron.
Okay.
So you're sayin' there's
still a chance the law
could be on our side?
Maybe.
But I wouldn't count on it, Billy.
You know, we can't wait for it.
We're doing the right
thing here, McSween.
[UNSETTLING MUSIC]
[SPEAKING SPANISH]
[SNIFFLING]
[DISTANT HORSE NEIGHING]
Watch yourself.
[DISTANT DOG BARKING]
Be on your ready, boys.
[DOOR CLOSES]
[WIND HOWLING]
[HOOVES PATTERING]
What do you want?
We've taken over the town.
We want to give you all a chance
to get out before it's too late.
We don't want a gunfight
if we don't need one.
We're just here to restore the peace.
Well, uh, we're gonna have to
talk to Mr. Riley about that.
[BILLY] You talk to
Mr. Riley, Mr. Murphy,
anybody else who might bring
this business to a close.
Until then, we're not going anywhere.
[DOOR CREAKS]
Close that fuckin' door.
- [DOOR CLOSES]
- What did they say?
They uh, they said
they'd taken the town,
and they want us to leave right away.
The hell they have!
They're fuckin' lying.
And you're standing here like patsies.
Billy the Kid's right
fuckin' down there.
Shoot him. Go ahead, shoot him!
[MAN] Come on, boys.
[MAN] Smash the windows! Hey!
[GUNFIRE]
- [SHOUTING]
- [HORSE NEIGHING]
[MAN 1] Watch out!
[GUNFIRE]
- [HORSE NEIGHING]
- [GRUNTING]
[BILLY] Charlie!
Take cover, Charlie!
[GUNFIRE]
- [GUNSHOT]
- Goddamn!
- [GUNFIRE]
- [INDISTINCT SHOUTING]
- [MAN 2] Get him out of here!
- [MAN 3] They're on the move!
Get on!
- [SINISTER MUSIC]
- Let's go!
- [GUNFIRE]
- Go, boys. Go!
Hyah! Hyah! Hyah! Hyah!
[MEN GROANING]
What the fuck are you
doin' lookin' at me?
Get some men down
there, find the others.
I need to know what
the fuck is happening.
- Sure thing, Mr. Riley.
- "Sure thing, Mr. Riley."
[DOOR CLOSES]
Oh, for fuck's sakes.
[TENSE MUSIC]
You ready?
They'll be comin' soon.
Yeah.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[WAITE] On the corner.
[BILLY] He's got a gun on George.
[GEORGE] Put that rifle down!
[WAITE] They ain't stopping, Billy.
[PAINED GRUNT]
- [GUNFIRE]
- [GRUNTING]
- [MAN 1] They're on the roof!
- [CHARLIE] Billy, on your right!
[PAINED GRUNT]
- [GRUNTING]
- [MAN 2] Take cover!
[CHARLIE] Coming around the back way!
Go, go, go, go!
[GUNSHOT]
[GUNSHOT ECHOING]
[SOFT EERIE MUSIC]
Woo-hoo! Yeah, we did it!
I did it!
Send 'em all to hell! [LAUGHING]
Woo-wee!
Hey. Don't touch the dead.
Why?
Shut the fuck up, will ya?
This ain't a game. Get inside.
Everybody, back to your stations.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
[PANTING]
Hyah!
Whoa!
Hey. What's goin' on?
Mr. Riley.
Where in the fuck were you?
It would seem that the Regulators
control most of the downtown
and the Mexican quarter.
Jesse's still out lookin' for The Kid?
Yes, and I've asked him
to come back immediately.
And in the meantime ?
[BREATHES DEEPLY]
I'm calling in my deputies.
As soon as they arrive,
I'll send them to the Tunstall Store.
If you need to kill a snake, Mr. Riley,
you gotta cut off its head.
Look, I advise you not
to panic at this point.
It may not look like it,
but we still hold all the
best cards in the pack.
[DOOR OPENS]
[DOOR CLOSES]
- Hup, hup!
- Hyah! Hyah!
[MAN] Tracks are leadin' north
to the old South Spring Ranch.
- To the woods!
- Hyah! Hyah!
[TENSE MUSIC]
[BABY CRYING]
Folks, you'll be safer outta town.
It's just for a few days.
[TOWNSFOLK 1] You can take
the wagon with the kids, okay?
[TOWNSFOLK 2] I know we'll be back soon.
[TOWNSFOLK CHATTER INDISTINCTLY]
- [GEORGE] Just for a few days.
- [TOWNSFOLK 2] Don't worry.
[KNOCKING AT DOOR]
[INDISTINCT WHISPERING]
[GUNS CLICKING]
- [SUE] It's Sue McSween.
- [WAITE] Stand down, boys.
[DOOR OPENS]
Sue!
I had to come and help.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
Can someone please
move these tables here?
[MAN] All right.
[SUE] I need some fresh water.
Can you please find me
some blankets? Thank you.
Gentlemen, these badges mean something.
Okay? They're badges of honor.
Now, all of you have been
given the great responsibility
of upholding the law and
administering justice.
These are difficult times.
You will need courage and fortitude,
but I am placing my trust in you,
and I know that you will repay it.
Now
which ones of you consider
yourselves to be good shots?
All right.
I want you three to take up positions
along the edge of town before sunrise,
by the Tunstall Store.
And I want the rest
of you to go surround
the Regulators' positions downtown.
But I want all of you
to move in a wide circle.
They'll be lookin' for you.
So don't let anyone
see you. You understand?
[DEPUTIES MURMUR IN AGREEMENT]
Good. Good.
Watch out for those
shooters on the roof.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
[LAUGHING]
- Final word?
- [LAUGHING]
Hey, Billy.
[LAUGHING]
- Well, they know we're here now.
- [MEN LAUGHING]
We caught them by surprise today,
but tomorrow, they
come back twice as hard.
My guess is first thing,
they'll be sharpshooters
around the town.
Herrera.
Juan says you're his best shot.
All right. First thing, you prove it.
You take four others, and
you find rooftop positions
and you take out those sharpshooters.
The rest of you just
know that if they try
a head-on attack, we
have more firepower.
[MAN] Damn right.
All right, everybody get some sleep.
We're gonna need it.
Charlie, you take first watch.
[BOTTLES CLINK]
[SOFT MUSIC]
Dulcinea?
Dulcinea?
Yes?
[SPEAKING SPANISH]
[CRYING]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[GUNMAN] Looks like they cleared out.
Hyah, hyah!
Whoa!
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Billy's taken over the town.
Boys, let's get back there!
[ALL SHOUTING]
Hyah! Hyah! Come on!
[DOG WHINING]
[MCSWEEN] It's Tunstall's dog.
McSween.
Hey! Hey!
Hey!
[WHISTLING]
[DOG WHINING]
Here, boy.
Come on.
- [GUNSHOT]
- [DOG YELPS]
- [BILLY] Let's go!
- [WAITE] Here we go, boys!
- [GUNFIRE]
- [INDISTINCT SHOUTING]
[PAINED GRUNT]
- [GUNFIRE]
- [INDISTINCT SHOUTING]
[WAITE] Shooters in the grainery!
[PAINED GRUNT, SHOUTING IN PAIN]
- [GUNFIRE]
- [SHOUTING]
[SPEAKING SPANISH]
[PAINED GRUNT]
[SCREAMING IN PAIN]
- It's okay. It's okay.
- [MAN 1] On the second floor!
[GUNSHOTS]
[MAN 2] Stay down, boys!
[PAINED GRUNT]
[MAN 2] There next!
[SHOUTS]
[GRUNTS]
[MAN 2] Eyes around the corner!
[PATRON SPEAKING SPANISH]
[GRUNTS]
- [MEN SHOUTING]
- [GUNFIRE]
[SCREAMING]
[GRUNTS]
[GUNFIRE CEASES]
[MAN 2] All clear!
[BREATHING HEAVILY]
[HORSES NEIGHING]
I have to say, I'm mighty
glad to see you folks.
Well, you know, Sheriff
Garrett's deputies
are attacking Tunstall's
store from the north side.
They've got Billy and most of
the leaders holed up inside.
They're the enemy. To be frank,
the Mexicans working for
them are worth nothing.
Maybe you should come down
there with us, Mr. Riley.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
Juan tells me they cleared the deputies
from the bottom of town, so
at this moment, we control that area.
And of course we control
the Tunstall Store
and the surrounding area.
But it's time to stop
defending and start attacking.
Tomorrow, at noon,
I want Juan and his men to join us here,
and together, we'll
storm the Murphy Store
and drive Riley and his men out of town.
[MEN MURMURING]
[BREATHES DEEPLY]
[BILLY] We in agreement?
[MEN MURMUR IN AGREEMENT]
Mr. Riley, you have the money.
You can put up so we can hire more guns.
John Kenny's a day and a half away.
We need to face facts!
The Regulators with the Mexicans
constitute a significant
force of around 60 fighters.
Right now, that's a third
more than we can muster.
- Mexicans as fighters
- Mr. Riley.
What's more, gentlemen,
is their core consists
of a dozen or more
first-rate gunmen.
Not just Billy the Kid,
but Waite, Coe, Bowdre, and others.
They're not gonna walk away.
Sheriff's right.
If The Kid wants it
he knows where we are.
[MAN] Yeah, damn right he does.
Unless
we change the odds.
[SOFT EERIE MUSIC]
[HORSE GRUNTS]
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
Hold up, Sheriff.
Colonel Dudley, it's the new sheriff.
Mr. Pat Garrett.
I'm sorry to call on you
so late, Colonel Dudley.
First of all, I, uh,
should have come up here
sooner to pay my respect.
All right, Sheriff.
Governor Axtell wrote me
and told me about your appointment.
And I can well imagine
that these early weeks
have been trying ones.
Please, have a seat.
Thank you, sir.
I'm sure you are aware
that a group of gunmen and thieves,
calling themselves the Regulators
and led by the outlaw Billy the Kid,
are trying to take over the town,
remove its lawful authorities.
Recently, there has been a
great increase in killings.
Yes, I'm aware of all that, Sheriff.
Well, out of desperation, sir,
those lawful parties, myself included,
have reconstituted ourselves
as the "Law and Order Party."
And it is on behalf of that party
I've come up here tonight
to ask for your help.
Well, you're not the
first sheriff in Lincoln
to ask for the military's help.
The fact is, the U.S. military
is severely constrained
by the Constitution
from interfering with
local and civic disputes.
Quite frankly, were here to
control the Indian population,
not feuding citizens.
I understand.
But, uh, what we have now in Lincoln
is not a civic dispute.
It's butchery and mayhem.
I implore you to act
before it's too late.
I have here a proclamation
from Governor Axtell.
It commands all armed men to disband,
return to their homes,
and not act as vigilantes
so long as U.S. Army can be summoned.
So
can I take it, Colonel,
that you will interfere
on behalf of the
forces of law and order?
[SIGHS]
No, Sheriff Garrett.
You see, my job here
is always to weigh out the
advantages and disadvantages
of involving the army in civil society.
And when we do, we
often earn the ill-will
of the population, and that, Sheriff
is a matter of great consideration.
Let me tell you that unless
you interfere right away,
there will be a massacre
on the streets of Lincoln.
Don't you think that
will earn you and the Army
the ill-will of the people?
[UNSETTLING MUSIC]
I wish you a good evening.
[MEN GRUNTING]
[JESSE] Beckwith!
- Beckwith?
- Yeah!
- Oil!
- Hammer it in!
[MAN] Let's go! Let's go!
[TICKING LOUDLY]
[SIGHS]
I'll pray for you, Billy.
We must never surrender.
I believe that now.
We're fighting for a good cause.
A noble cause.
May God give you the victory.
Thank you.
I do hope you're right.
So
[GUN CLICKING]
What are you gonna do?
Do you think the Regulators
are strong enough to attack us here?
Yeah, they are.
Then what are ya gonna do?
Riley, steady.
I reckon you boys should
take a look outside.
[SIGHS]
[TENSE PERCUSSIVE MUSIC]
Ya!
Good man, Sheriff Garrett. Good man!
Colonel Dudley.
Colonel Dudley.
Thank you.
You came just in time.
[LT. SMITH] Company, halt!
It's all right, Sheriff.
Just doing our duty.
Sheriff.
Which men do you want arrested, exactly?
I want the whole damn business.
Sheriff Garrett, let
me be perfectly clear.
[HORSE NEIGHING]
I did not come to Lincoln
today to assist you in any way.
I'm here to ensure the safety
of the women and children.
The men can take care of themselves.
But if anyone, and I stress anyone,
fires upon my company,
I will return fire
immediately. Understood?
Colonel Dudley, I am Alexander McSween.
I act as attorney for the Regulators,
those who are fighting
for an end to corruption
here in Lincoln. While I am gratified
that your troopers will remain neutral,
I must point out that
among those supporting you
are several men charged with
the murder of John Tunstall
and for whose immediate
arrest I carry warrants,
signed by a Judge John Wilson.
And I have warrants for the arrest
of those responsible for
the murder of Sheriff Brady.
Some of whom are standing
right over there, Mr. McSween.
Gentlemen, I am not here
to arrest anyone today.
I came here to restore the peace.
I am ordering all of
you to go home, now.
Leave immediately.
This town is under permanent curfew.
Find anybody out on
the streets past hours
without permission or a damn good reason
will be arrested. Understood?
Clear?
- Lieutenant?
- Sir.
[LT. SMITH] Cavalry,
cordon to the south.
Infantry, let's clear
the civilians, gently.
[CROWD MURMURING]
[JESSE] Woo!
[ANIMALS HOWLING]
[CHEERING]
All right, let's raise a
glass to Colonel Nathan Dudley
and the U.S. Cavalry.
Let's go, boys!
[ALL CHEERING]
And don't forget Pat Garrett.
He's a good man. Raise a
glass to Sheriff Pat Garrett.
[ALL CHEERING]
[UPBEAT FIDDLE MUSIC PLAYING]
That's yours.
Ah
So what do you gotta say for yourself?
Well, what do you mean?
What do I mean?
Pat Garrett just about saved your ass.
You personally have done jack shit.
That's what I mean.
[TENSE MUSIC]
[DOOR OPENS]
- Well?
- They've put up their tents
in a field just below Murphy's store.
[MCSWEEN] They've won.
Murphy and Riley. They've won.
No, they haven't. Colonel Dudley
is the real law in this country.
And when we explain to him
It won't make any
difference, Mrs. McSween.
[MRS. MCSWEEN] The Colonel
swore he wasn't taking sides.
He's only here to restore the peace.
I don't know what
happened. I didn't think
the army was gonna get involved.
They're not supposed to get involved.
No one saw this comin'.
I didn't see this comin'.
I'll be right back.
Billy.

[UPBEAT FIDDLE MUSIC]
Where's Jesse?
I don't know. Why?
Leave. Now.
We need to make plans. Now's our chance.
For what?
To make new moves!
- I'll find him, Mr. Riley.
- Do.
[TENSE MUSIC]
[CREAKING]
[FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING]
[THUNDER RUMBLING]
[GUN CLICKING]
Hello, Billy.
Pat.
It's good to see you.
Really?
[CLEARS THROAT]
[GUN THUDS ON FLOOR]
Look, I don't want you to think
that we're on opposite sides here.
Because we're not.
I want what you want.
Oh, you want justice too?
Of course I want justice.
You want the end of the
House? The end of the Rings?
I can't control that,
Billy. I'm just the sheriff.
Well, as just the sheriff,
I presume you're gonna stay
neutral in this whole business
and not pick sides with the House.
Billy, it is so much more
complicated than that.
The fuck it is.
You can't fight the system.
And now we're talking.
If there's no law, there's only anarchy.
And that is in no one's interest.
You know, that sounds like
it's right outta their handbook.
Billy
[CLEARS THROAT]
You have to give up.
You can't win.
When are you gonna learn
this ain't a game for me?
I don't care about winning.
All I care about is that for too long,
a few corrupt assholes in Santa Fe,
like Axtell and Catron,
been pullin' all the
strings down here in Lincoln,
bleedin' these poor people dry.
And if they speak up,
if anyone speaks up,
they're silenced.
And if they can't be silenced,
well, then, they're killed.
We're just tryin' to change it, Pat.
But we need your help.
You have been given a
badge. You have the power.
Use it.
