- On this episode of Haunted Collector My husband, Joel, and I moved in about seven years ago.
We've noticed a dark, shadowy figure stands in our doorway.
There's quite a collection of old radios.
The bookstore was built in 1871.
I'll see an apparition of a little boy.
We leave toys in here.
They move constantly.
Wait.
I'm sorry.
I feel like I'm gonna pass out.
That's just creepy.
- What's that? - Are you kidding me? What the hell was that? - There's a child talking.
- Oh my God.
Whoa.

My name is John Zaffis.
For over 40 years, I've been helping people with their paranormal problems.
I found that spirits can attach themselves to objects - Whoa.
- Oh my God.
And make life a living hell.

This woman's pretty scared.
Hi.
My name is Mindy.
I live in rural Ohio.
I moved into this old home about seven years ago.
Since we started renovating lot's of terrifying things have been happening Stomping up the stairs, pounding on the wall, and we saw an apparition.
I feel like this has put a lot of strain on my family life.
I was hoping that you could come out, and help us get our lives back in order because we really feel like since we moved in here, we've lost control of our home and our lives.
Wow.
I definitely think that we need to get down there to see if we can help her out.
As far as history, let's research.

Now, this town was actually built up around a rail road.
So there's a lot of rich history here.
We know there was major battles that took place in this area, over this land.
Remember, wherever they died, they ended up burying people.
So, you know, it's like one big massive graveyard.
Um, that just creeped me out.
Hey, any time you put houses up anywhere, you disturb any of the land, who knows what could be unleashed? You guys get the equipment ready, Aimee and I are gonna go in and meet the clients.

When I opened the door and saw John and Aimee there I was very relieved.
I felt maybe they can help us figure out what's going on and get rid of the problems that we've been having since we moved in.
Get us up to speed here.
What's happening? My husband, Joel, and I moved in about seven years go.
We started renovating right away.
Shortly after we removed a boot from the wall, we started noticing some strange activity that night, actually Running up the stairs, pounding on the walls, pounding on the doors.
Really scared us.
Since then, we've had a lot more things happening Things moving, we've even seen some apparitions.
I'm to the point I won't stay in the house by myself, and I feel like I'm always being watched.
It's terrifying.
Okay.
Well, it's not a good thing that you can't stay in your own home.
- No.
- We'll do everything we can to try to help you out with this.
This is the living room where we spend most of our time.
One of the first things that we've noticed and it still happens quite frequently, is a dark, shadowy, tall figure that stands in our doorway It walks over to the middle of the doorway, turns to face us for a couple of seconds and then turns back and continues on walking down the hallway.
This happens on a pretty routine basis, - almost once a week.
- Wow.
Now, Mindy is petrified by this black shadow figure that she keeps seeing in the hall.
We need to dig in and find out, is there a reason why this is all happening? This is the bedroom where we sleep.
One night, about 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning, we woke up to the sound of a woman sobbing at the foot of our bed.
We put the light on, took a look, there's nothing that we could see.
We could just hear a woman crying very loudly over and over again that lasted for several minutes.
- It was very frightening.
- Hmm.
And an interesting thing that we found in the house are these old skeleton keys.
We got to remember, they were used as a passing key.
- It's metal, and it can hold onto energy.
- Where did you find them in the house? Some were found in an old cupboard and others were found randomly placed throughout the house.
Hmm.
This is our basement, and this is an old boot that was found in the attic crawl space above the staircase during renovations for the house when we first moved in.
This all started after taking that boot out? - Yep.
- It's a very old custom, goes back to the Romans.
What they used to do, Mindy, is they would take a boot or a shoe and put it in a wall or hide it someplace.
And it's supposed to ward off any negativity that should come anywhere near your house.
Oh, wow.
I've worked on several other investigations over the years where people have removed items and all hell broke out.
The only other thing down here is that little crawl space that I've never gone into because it's so scary in there.
Well, definitely.
I agree with you on that.
And this area of the basement, it's actually the oldest part of the house.
The house used to be a veterinary office.
It has a couple of horse stables that are still here.
This is another area of the basement.
My husband was exploring down here one day, came across this box.
And when he opened it, he noticed that there were nude pictures.
They're pretty old.
We can't tell how old.
They definitely look like something from the forties.
And then another interesting thing in the house are these old radios.
It's one of my husband's hobbies.
Okay.
Spirits have been known to communicate through radio waves, but these radios aren't even plugged in.
So I don't think this is the source of Mindy's problems.
All right, Mindy, I would like to get the team in here and do our baseline readings.
Let's see what we come up with, I'm kinda hoping by being in here we're gonna be able to give you some answers.

While Aimee and Jason start the research on the property, we're gonna do our baseline sweep.
I really wanna get a good feel for this piece of property.
So while Chris and Brian start taking EMF readings, I'm going to talk to Mindy's husband.
Now, I see you have radios all over the place.
What's that all about? I've been collecting radios for about 10 years.
I love to restore 'em.
Well, Joel, with old radios, new radios, TVs, spirit has been known to speak through these items to communicate.
Wow.
I'm really hoping that my hobbies aren't bringing these ghosts into the house and scaring my wife out of it.
Lots of spider webs.
Watch out.
You know, just once, can a ghost be cleaner, live somewhere nice? We like to cover the house from top to bottom, so Chris and I are gonna start by taking some electromagnetic field readings in the attic.
We're looking for any abnormal spikes that can't be easily explained.
All right Chris, you getting any readings? Not really, like miniscule.

Let's head on down to the basement? - Yeah.
- All right.
We'll try right in the bedroom.
There's a variety of keys, Jess.
They just found in floorboards or in cabinets.
- All of them? - Yes.
All these are from the actual house.
I really wanna check out those skeleton keys.
I wanna see if there's any energy attached to 'em.
So we're going to use our K2 meter to see if we can provoke any EMF response.
Do any of these keys open something that is hiding in this house? Are you trying to tell us something about one of the keys? All these wires - There sure a lot of 'em.
- All leading to this box.
And somebody's getting a phone call.
- There are a lot of radios down here.
- That wasn't your cell phone? No.
I don't have my cell phone on me.
It definitely came from this area.
And out of nowhere, this really faint music starts playing, and it kinda freaks me out.
- It sounded like a ring tone.
- Well, it couldn't have been from this because it's, um, not on.
None of the wires were connected.
I can't ever see these playing music again, ever.

During the baseline sweep, we heard music.
I have no immediate explanation for this.
A radio that is not plugged in, has no power and is clearly missing parts.
- How can this be making any noise? - Hey, John.

- Are you there? - Yeah, buddy.
What's up? We're having some weird times down here at the basement.
Okay, I'll be on my way down.
Going on? There seems to be sound coming from this, but that's impossible because there's no power.
Nothing is giving off readings, but literally there's wires - everywhere.
- Everywhere.
It sounded like old circus music.
- Circus music? - It was old.
- More like forties type? - Earlier.
I don't know.
I got some weird things going on here, guys.
We definitely gotta find out about some of this.
The phenomenon in Mindy's house started when she pulled a boot out of the wall, but this house is over a century old.
So Aimee and I are gonna meet with a historian.
We're gonna try to find out about the boot and some history about the home.

I found you some information about some of the owners of the home.
- Oh, great.
- It shows down here that the house was built by Mrs.
Daughtery in the mid-1800s, which was unusual for a woman to own a house by herself.
Okay.
Actually, I wanted to show you this, Janet.
When the owners were renovating, they actually pulled this out of the wall.
I would say that the shoe would be from about the mid-1800s, and it very well could have been Mrs.
Daughtery's.
Mindy had told me she thought a veterinarian Used the house or lived in the house.
Do you know anything about that? One of the persons who had bought it was a Dr.
Edwin Holiday, and he was a vet.
And he used the house as his office.
You see here, Malcolm was one of the Holiday children.
It says he was very young when he died, do you know anything about that? I couldn't find anything on that.
We may have to do some further research.
- Definitely something we should look into.
- Absolutely.
Oh Jason, I've found Malcolm Holiday.
He was killed on the train tracks.
Killed Sunday in October of 1902.
"He was run over by an electric car near Oberlin".
Looks like he was with a friend.
It says "They were lost and just walking along the tracks".
"The Motorman saw him, but too late to bring the car to a stop" "before it struck the ill-fated boy".
"The mangled remains were placed upon the rear platform" "and life was found to be extinct".
Did you just hear the train? Yeah, made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
That's just creepy.
What really stood out to me was the thing that Mindy and Joel are seeing.
They're seeing a black shadow figure.
Mindy feels like it's definitely a male presence.
When a person is killed tragically, a lot of times that spirit and that energy will go right back to the place where it was most comfortable.
Does the shadow figure really tie in with Malcolm? We'll really gonna have to dig in tonight to find out.
Aimee, Jason, I want you guys to hit the downstairs living room.
Brian and Chris will be on the monitors on the second floor.
And Jess and I will be in The Master Bedroom where Mindy heard the sobbing woman.

The nighttime investigation is where we split up into pairs and focus on the active areas that we found during our baseline sweep.

For Mindy's house, we're setting up the surveillance cameras all over the basement because that's where Chris and I found a hot spot earlier.
10 cameras deployed.
360 movement in the radio room.
- Aimee, do you wanna try the ghost box? - Okay.
Based on some of the things that are going on in this house, like music being heard playing from the basement, Jason and I are gonna try using the ghost box.
It uses am-fm radio waves that in theory a spirit can manipulate to try to communicate a message.
Malcolm, are you here with us right now? If you can hear us, can you say yes? Turn that off.
What the hell was that? - Is that like a speaker? - Yeah.
The sound speakers next to us kept sending off a muffled, almost vibration.
(Bleep) Oh, you know what? Our walkies are on, so we must be getting feedback over the radio speakers.
- Scares me.

At nighttime when it's quiet, we try to do EVPs.
Electronic Voice Phenomena.
And we're also gonna be using the K2 meter because you never know what's gonna reach out.

Are you the one scaring Mindy? Does she remind you of somebody? Guess we don't need any more verification than that.

Such a clear EVP is great evidence.
If the spirit feels a kinship to Mindy, it might be why it's trying to reach out to her.

Now, the basement cameras kept going out seemingly at random.
After we checked our connections to make sure that we had set it up correctly, we had to find another explanation for this.
And I feel like maybe this energy was trying to guide us.
You ready? Really creepy down here.
I wanna head all the way over into that back corner where all the radios are.
There are so many objects in the basement, and I wanted to use the thermal cam.
I'll measure the temperature of the objects with heat showing up as red and cold as blue.
I think it's just getting a light reflection.
- That's a reflection of the light.
- Yeah.

Another one of the cameras just shut off by that hole.

A bright red hot spot in the middle of a cold dark hole is definitely not normal.

Right above that is where they found that boot, and that's where all the activity started.
Look at what I'm getting on the thermal.

Let's think about what we know.
I mean, we know Malcolm Holiday lived here.
We know that he got killed by the - train because he was lost.
- Mm-hmm.
Do you think there's any connection there? Well, we're definitely gonna try to find out, Aimee, because that's interesting.
You know once I take it to the expert.
I'm going to see what I can find out.
I'm really looking forward to getting together with Betty today.
She's a local antiques expert.
She has 20 years under her belt.
I wanna see what she can tell me about this compass.
Betty, I'm working on an investigation not that far from here, and we found this in the house, and I'm hoping you can give me some information on it.
Let's take a look.
This compass, because of its construction, - dates it to probably mid to late 1800s.
- Mm-hum.
And we can tell that for a couple of reasons.
First one being that it is a screw-top lid.
After World War I, they started producing compasses with the hinged lid, and since this is a screw-top, that definitely dates it for us.
And also the material, it's made of brass, and they needed to be made of durable material - because they were carried in pockets.
- Mm-hum.
I don't see any marks, that would indicate - uh, maker or country of origin.
- Okay.
Which makes me think that it was made for civilian population, not military.
Okay.
Would that be something that a young man would carry with him? Oh, definitely.
Compasses were actually a lot more popular then than they are now.
And so it's very possible that a young man could've put this in his pocket and carried it with him.
Some of that information is helping me.
We're trying to piece the puzzle together.

And we actually had an EVP that came through.

When I heard the EVP, I was very creeped out.
It sounded like a voice to the figure that I've been seeing for so long.
You know, again, with you hearing a woman - and she was sobbing.
- Mm-hmm.
I definitely feel that that was a good possibility - that it's Malcolm's mother.
- Right.
What I'm thinking, Mindy, is you might represent his mom.
You might look like his mom.
That's why he was reaching out so much to you.
Oh, wow.
After the EVP, the cameras started acting up in the basement.
I ended up in that back area, you know, that creepy area.
And what we found was an old compass.
- Really? - Yes.
Now, I had taken this to an expert.
We know it was made in the late 1800s.
It was very common that they would carry things like this.
Was this Malcolm's? Is he searching for this? Is he lost? - We're never gonna know.
- Right.
But to me, that's what it started representing.
So I need to ask you What would you like to do with this item? If he's using it to connect with this house, we can just remove it from the house completely, maybe that will help solve out problems.

Also, too, I'd like to speak a little bit about the boot.
When you removed it, that's when a lot of the activity started up.
If we put this back in the wall and seal it back up, I think that's gonna calm the spirit way down.
- Oh, I certainly hope so.

I am very grateful that John's team came out to visit us.
I've always been kind of afraid of whatever's been in this house.
But now, I feel kind of empowered, kind of understand what happened in the house, and hopefully, things will kinda subside in the future.
Throughout the ages, sea salt has been used to calm and bind spirit energy.
So I'll surround this compass with it in hopes that it will help Malcolm find his way home.

The town was established in 1840.
Basically, all the people that lived here were mostly boatmen.
The downtown area had a very profitable red light district.
Years ago, with that type of an environment, people didn't think anything of shooting each other and then asking questions.
So you can have a lot of energy that could be lingering in some of these buildings just from that.
So the building that actually houses the bookstore was built in 1871.

- So it's been around a long time.
If there is energy attached to just one book, how are we gonna find it among hundreds and hundreds of books? Well, it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Browse Awhile Bookstore has been experiencing frightening, unexplained phenomena.
There's probably a logical explanation, so it's important to me to get in here and find out what really is going on.
Why don't you tell me what's actually been happening in here? The activity has been going on in here since before I started working here.
And I've been here little over five years.
I have books dropping all the time.
I have shadow figures peeking around the bookshelves at me.
I've had a customer come up, she's been over here looking at books, said, "I don't wanna alarm you, but did you know you have a ghost in here? He just told me to get out of his library".
It's just unexplainable stuff.
Now, I notice you got a very large paranormal section back here.
- That we do.
- Yeah, I mean, you gotta remember energy can stay attached to books just like anything else.
Although I have seen spirits attached to books before, if Amanda's customers are coming in here and reading all these books on the supernatural, is it possible that their imagination could be going crazy? At one point in time, this building was a barbershop, and we found this, which I believe is the razor blade sharpener.
We found this in the basement.
I've got an item I usually keep behind the counter because it is very sharp and can be dangerous.
But it is the old straight razors that they used to shave with.
But I thought you might be interested in it.
They're really dangerous.
I mean, at one point in time, you went to the barbershop and, literally, you're putting your life in the barber's hands.
There's actually documented death from straight razor and quite a few states ban them now.
Amanda, I saw the date on the front of the building was 1871.
The building was started in 1871, completed in 1872.
It's been a barbershop, hardware store, bakery and then the bookstore.
Was there any known stories of tragedies or anything? When it was a bakery, - there was a fire in here.
- Okay there was a death in here, but it was natural causes.
When it was a hardware store, a man died of a heart attack.
He was the owner of the hardware store.
Okay.
This is the mystery room because it houses all of our mystery books in it.
This is the room that when it was a bakery, it caught on fire.
Every now and then, you can still smell the charred wood Had a woman slapped in here who we believe was shoplifting.
This is the room I'll see an apparition of a little boy Uh, so now we leave toys in here for him.
They move constantly.
Because we come in and they're in different spots all the time.
So you leave these toys out because you think it makes the ghost happy? Yeah.
Were you ever able to find anything out about a little boy dying here or anything whatsoever? No.
This is the basement.
It's probably the creepiest, most active spot in the building.
I don't come down here unless absolutely necessary because it scares the crap out of me to be perfectly honest with you.
I've been down here by myself before.
I have to come down to look for a book.
I hear footsteps on the stairs, on the floorboards above.
Go up, look, and there's nobody else in the building.
We thought we heard a crash down here like a bookshelf fell over.
Are these bookshelves tightly secured in any way? - No.
- Okay.
I've got this box here.
When the owner bought the building back in 1990, these were left in here.
- Okay.
- It was a hardware store at one point in time, so we're guessing it's where those came from.
I see a lot of locks in here.
Years ago, in homes when people were near death, they would lock all the doors, lock all the windows and everything so that the spirit or the soul couldn't actually leave the body.
Some of these items could actually be holding on to some unique type of energy.
You just never know.
Amanda, we covered an awful lot here.
I'd really like to talk to one of your customers about some of the things they've experienced and gotta get the team in here, see what we could find out for you.
I truly appreciate that.
This is a more complex case than usual.
Not only are there thousands of books in here, there are also artifacts and tragedies associated with the building's past.
If there is any paranormal activity going on in here, finding the source is going to be a challenge.
Now, Ramona, I've been told you had a pretty frightening experience in here.
- I did.
- What happened? My girlfriend and I were going down this hallway, and I was actually leaning on the doorway of this room.
And all of a sudden, I had a real sharp pain in my back.
I couldn't breathe, like it took my breath away.
I thought maybe I turned the wrong way, it's my muscle or something.
And my girlfriend said, "let me see your back".
And when she pulled up my shirt, I had two scratches, this way, on my back.
And in the middle, there was a big bruise forming.
Um - I'm sorry.
- No, no.
It's okay.
It's all right.
So, um Okay, wait.
I'm sorry.
I'm not feeling well.
- You alright? - I feel like I'm gonna pass out.
I need to I need to sit or something.

She started getting very flushed.
She started getting very red.
I got very concerned.
- Feeling all right now? A little better? - Better, yeah.
Do you feel that it was that room that made you feel that way? Yeah.
I know that's the first time you went back in there and everything.
Would you feel comfortable going back in there again? No.
I don't think so.

During our baseline sweep, I was searching for EMF, which is electromagnetic fields.
In addition to that, we also try and debunk the activity that's reported.
The more we debunk, the less we have to look for during the nighttime investigation.
I'm getting readings off of seemingly everything.
Obviously the lights.
We know this is supposed to give off EMF.
But I'm getting readings saturating these entire shelves.
- What do you think it could be? - It's pretty constant.
Normally, I would say it's unshielded wiring.
Either that or romance novels give off EMF.
Yeah, because everything down here is just completely engulfed.
Hey, can you turn off the lights? I wanna check something out.
Since the EMF in the basement was so high, I wanted to see what kind of readings we'd get with the fluorescent lights turned off.
Anything on your readings in there, dude? Zero.
I'm getting zero.
Sure enough, once we turned the lights off, the readings returned to normal.
Too much EMF will alter perceptions.
It might make you feel dizzy, might even cause hallucinations.
So if she's down here and she's feeling uneasy, it could just be because she's Her body's, you know, a little more sensitive to the EMF than normal.
Yeah.
Alright, these are a couple of the items that she was talking about.
They actually found these in the store which used to be a barbershop.

Are they connected? I don't know, but we have a lot to investigate tonight.

The current theory is that spirits can disrupt electromagnetic fields.
So we're gonna set up the REM-pod on one of the bookshelves.
The REM-pod generates its own small electromagnetic field.
So if anything disrupts the specific area, an audible tone will be heard.

Now, Aimee and I came down here in the basement and we were doing EVPs in this area.
And we caught something that I think that you're gonna be very interested in hearing.

Well, we had cameras set up all over the place.
And we had one focused in on the mystery room.
We did one of the experiments like what you do with the toys.

I'm glad that you guys found something to verify what I've seen in here.
Actually, tell me what else you're actually feeling.

It's it makes you sad.
Watching the video and hearing the EVP, it breaks your heart.
It makes you wanna cry because that child died really young and didn't get to live its life.
It makes you wanna cry.
See, the way I look at it, it's a very touching thing, because that told me that the children's spirit are so comfortable and they're so secure with you.
They're reaching out to you because they know you're gonna protect them, and they know that you're gonna watch out for 'em.
At this point, I have to actually tell you, between the books and the different items and everything, I can't pinpoint one thing in this building.
I can't come to a conclusion like that.

- But I can help you and I can show you a way to actually help protect things.
And the method that I'm gonna recommend is put mirrors in the windows to deflect spirit from actually coming in.
So arming you with some of these tools, I think it's gonna calm down a lot of the activity.
It's gonna be okay kiddo.
I think placing the mirrors will help keep the energy level down in here.
And I will feel better knowing that this will be a calmer safer place.
For not only myself but for the customers and the other employees who work here.
