Scorpion (2014) s02e06 Episode Script
Tech, Drugs, and Rock 'n Roll (90 min)
WALTER: I'm Walter O'Brien.
I run a team of geniuses who handle worldwide threats only we can solve.
Sylvester is a human calculator.
Happy's a mechanical prodigy.
And Toby is our behaviorist.
Agent Cabe Gallo is our government handler.
And Paige helps translate the world for us while we help her understand her genius son.
Though sometimes our biggest challenge is understanding each other.
Together, we are Scorpion.
WALTER: Mr.
Elia, I can assure you I have taken every imaginable precaution.
Walter, how many times do I have to say it? Mr.
Elia is my dad.
Sorry, Richard.
- (horn honking) - 67 miles per hour, passing in three, two, one.
One, two, three.
This morning I completed the diagnostic on the building's phone interpretation software, (horn honking) the climate preferences, and personalized audio.
Just hold on.
Those were the only systems that needed testing, and they passed with flying colors.
(whoops) I'm sure they did.
I guess I'm just more of a worrier than you are, which is why we make - a good team, right? - Mr.
Elia Richard, I do not do dangerous.
I do calculations, thereby eliminating risk.
Walter, you sound like you're running on the freeway.
No.
Not at the moment.
Mr.
Elia, listen, I I cannot tell you how much this opportunity has meant to me and my team.
- We would never let you down.
- Make sure you finish downloading the code for the smart kitchen tech.
- See you tomorrow.
7:00 sharp.
- Okay.
Bye.
Whew.
That was intense! Man, didn't want to lose this baby though.
Right? - Thanks for grabbing it.
- Sure.
How'd the call with the billionaire go? He's anxious about tomorrow night.
So are you.
You look up to him.
You don't want to let him down.
Well, he has high expectations.
So do I.
It's all well and good, Wally, but, listen, you need to relax a bit, too, bro.
Oh, hey, after you give the talk at that tech conference tonight, you should go to that little mixer thing after.
- Oh, no, I'm not the mixer type.
- This guy you look up to, I'll bet he's well-rounded, right? Life of the party, easy line with the ladies.
That is how you get to the ivory tower.
You just act like a regular guy, be personable.
Would also help with your girlfriend, Pearl.
- Paige.
And she's just my friend.
- First rule of social mingling: be self-deprecating.
And if you happen to chat up a lady, I want you to compliment her, okay? But not on the standards.
No hair, no eyes.
Just, you know, "Hey, wow.
What wonderful posture you have.
" Guarantee they've never heard that before.
Because that is preposterous.
It's gold.
Trust me.
Listen, I am gonna make this simple for you.
- Tonight, when in doubt, - No.
- I want you to ask yourself, - No.
Please "What would Ray do?" Booyah.
(dance music playing) (crowd cheering) (clears throat) Oh.
(scoffs) Are you a-a recent sporting, uh, contest? If I were you, I'd take a walk to the other end of the bar.
- Great.
- (chuckles) I knew it.
This guy Ray was suggesting I engage.
No, dude, the girl at the end of the bar.
She's throwing you eyes.
Yeah.
Yeah, I'll try it.
I heard you're talking superconducting electromagnets.
Stimulating.
No, it's been highly caffeinated.
I did hear snoring.
(laughs) Their loss.
Has anybody ever told you that you have, uh, perfectly rounded earlobes? It's a dominant genetic trait.
Oh, okay.
Thank you? Do you want to see a cool math trick? Who could turn that down? Okay, what is X? I think you need a drink.
No, no, no, no, wait, wait.
Ah, 87.
This taught me to not always accept things as they might first appear.
Sometimes it's good to go with your gut.
BARTENDER: What can I get you? Oh, no, I don't drink.
Alcohol effects my cognitive function.
(chuckles) Dry martini for me.
And something sweet for Oh, yeah, okay.
Walter.
Long Island iced tea? Caffeinated tea can increase focus.
You're different, aren't you? Just a regular guy.
PAIGE: Walter O'Brien would never forget about tonight, Mr.
Elia.
The building opening is all Walter's been working toward for weeks.
I'm going to guess that he's neck-deep in trying to finish the smart kitchen code and-and turned off his ringer.
He does that.
As soon as he comes up for air, I'll have him call you, okay? Okay, this is important.
Thanks.
Where the hell is Walter? I can only hold off Elia for so long.
He's not answering his cell or his hotel room phone.
He's looking at the last of the building specs, guaranteed.
He'll be here any minute.
- Sly, hold this for me.
- Okay.
- Is that for the Elia job? - Negative.
Happy built me a personal humidor for my Super Fun Guy comics.
It controls temperature, humidity, limits exposure to light in order to prevent premature bleaching of the covers.
Humidor for your comics? Technically, it's a Super-dor.
(sighs) Da-da-da-da-da.
No dice, grabby hands.
I've calculated a precise monthly schedule for each comic to be perused in order to ensure complete preservation.
Four minutes, wearing gloves.
I hate that look.
It makes me feel like I'm about to be diagnosed.
Your submersion into childhood interests indicates regression.
Thank you.
You're an enabler.
This is a hobby.
This must have something to do with Megan.
It's complicated.
Yeah, life is complicated.
Adult relationships are complicated.
This is your security blanket, Linus.
How about you avoiding adult relationships by pursuing the one woman on earth who has no interest in you.
Oh, please, I kicked that habit cold turkey.
I need Happy like I need necrotizing fasciitis.
You want me to prove it? I will.
Watch me.
CABE: Been trying to reach Walter.
It keeps going to voice-mail.
We're supposed to be to Elia's in an hour.
TOBY: Guys, we've been slaving on this job for weeks, especially Walter.
I'm sure he's Yeah, I have no clue where he could be.
Let's take a ride.
PAIGE: Walter? Oh, boy.
He's passed out on the floor.
Fine, excellent.
Oh, yeah, you look real great, kid.
It's not actual science, but I believe the phrase is liquor before beer.
Oh, I don't drink alcohol.
I only had one Rhode Island iced tea.
Long Island iced tea.
We got to get you ready.
We're due at Elia's building in 25 minutes.
I only had one drink.
Yeah, one drink that you remember.
You're just not used to the fire power of the Long Island.
Elia's been asking if you finished the kitchen smart tech.
Oh, boy.
Yeah, I'm gonna take care of it.
Hmm, cell phone's dead, room phone unplugged.
Must have wanted privacy.
I don't remember how I got here.
Do you smell perfume? (laughs) Okay, that's a good one.
When was the last time you saw Happy laugh at anything? I have made Happy laugh a million times.
Yeah, at you.
She must be on with Chet.
I mean, look at her expression.
It looks like she won the lottery or got nominated for some award or something.
That's a big smile, I got it.
I know that you're skeptical, but I'm good with this.
I was totally fine before Happy came into my life.
You were a Dumpster fire.
TOBY: Wow, Walter, you look like me the day after the Kentucky Derby.
Are you ill? How ill? Just a cocktail flu.
He's disease-free.
We think.
Let's just get inside.
This is a big day for Scorpion.
Thank you.
I'm gonna get my own door, thanks.
It's an independence thing.
You're welcome.
ELIA: My dream was to create the world's most energy-efficient smart building that leaves no negative footprint.
Our new headquarters features climate-responsive technology.
Solar panels extend from the building when touched by light.
And the geothermal HVAC system was designed using laminar air flow that creates completely particle-free clean air environment.
(applause) All of this was done using the input of the world's top designers, architects and the Scorpion team, led by Mr.
Walter O'Brien.
(applause) Hello.
Please, I invite all of you to tour the building, ask questions, and please, enjoy the food and drinks.
Thanks for coming.
Very good.
- You made it.
- Oh, yeah, sorry.
Forgive my cell reception issues.
Hello.
- I am just glad you're here.
- Yes.
This is my head of biometrics, Dan Smaisle.
Oh, yes.
Dan.
Head of security, - Wilson Adler.
- Mr.
O'Brien.
You alright? You look a little, uh, flushed.
Uh, never been better.
Okay, because we have a problem.
WALTER: It is normal for people to encounter last-minute glitches, but all is gonna be handled very soon.
Of course, and maybe this is me just worrying again, but I've been hawking your prowess for the last month, so you've got to come through.
Tripling the tech budget of a project three weeks before completion does invite scrutiny.
Guys, it's in the bag.
Scorpion is synonymous with professionalism.
(pop song playing) FEMALE ELECTRONIC VOICE: This is the most frequently-played song of all music collections in this elevator chosen from the playlist of Tobias Curtis.
This old girlfriend downloaded it.
I've never even listened to it.
This song has been played The fish bubbles stopped.
The ViviSpace projector isn't working.
Uh, you know, I set everything up in here, so excuse me.
An error message keeps popping up.
They are on it, Russell.
It's my son.
Oh, hey, Super Fun Guy fan? - Very nice.
- I'm sure you've noticed that the room is freezing when the thermostat says 70 degrees.
We will have this under control ASAP.
I'll go glad-hand the press.
Explain your absence.
I went toe-to-toe with the board to make this building happen.
Those guys backed me.
- They're a little touchy.
- Mm-hmm.
Just wrap this up quietly - and will be well.
- Sure, sure.
Sly, come here.
Okay, guys comms in.
Happy, head to the basement pump room to inspect the geothermal temperature system.
Toby, evaluate the HVAC system on the roof.
We are gonna fix these glitches.
There's no way we're letting Elia down.
Let's go.
It's all right, Walter.
Glitches happen.
I mean, you said it yourself.
Yeah, well, I was just saying that because, in reality, they don't happen to me.
They happen to everyone.
You might be on edge because you're not feeling 100%.
Probably didn't get a lot of sleep last night.
Nothing untoward happened.
Uh, oh, no, that's none of my-my business.
I'm just saying regular people blow off steam.
Nothing wrong with being regular.
Well, Elia, who is brilliant and a billionaire, did not hire regular.
Yeah.
How's it going? I'm just running a quick check.
(sharp beeping) Walter, what's going on? Building systems are failing.
All of them.
All right, fake Siri, you made your point.
You know, I'm not gonna stand here and defend it to you.
It's catchy, for one.
It's classic coming of age angst.
And it reminds me of the summer I made out with Susie Bren.
Um guys? The electrical system for the elevator grid has shut down.
Walter, I thought you said you had this was control.
Our programmable logic controllers are under attack.
It's behaving like Stuxnet.
What? It was a cyber-attack on Iranian nuclear capabilities.
It burned out the whole system.
Oh, no, it's introduced an infected rootkit onto the PLC, it's modifying the codes, it's giving unexpected commands.
I got none of that.
Building's been infected by a worm.
It's spreading swiftly.
It's targeting the individual systems.
I recall that you insured system protection against this.
My code was designed to keep viruses like this out.
I just, uh, I don't know what's happening here.
(alarm wailing) Uh, Walt, the geothermal pump has ramped up to hyper speed.
And the motor just exploded! Okay, I got some serious smoke down here.
And no fire extinguisher.
Okay, the sprinklers and fire retardant should activate within seconds.
Uh, okay, the flames are getting bigger.
And the sprinklers aren't engaging.
It's because of the worm.
Okay, Walt, there are embers flying here.
I don't have to tell you this is the building's lungs.
It's a unidirectional ventilation system, so the embers can spread through the vents to anywhere in the building.
My son is on the 17th floor.
All right, Sylvester, get the kids out of the building now.
Okay, guys, uh, change of plans.
We're gonna go downstairs and get some fresh air.
So come on.
(sighs) Change of plans again.
Everybody just go back to where you were.
- What's going on? - I don't know.
(whispers): Hey, Walter, the doors are locked and we can't get out.
What is the hold up? Open those doors.
WALTER: The worm is blocking me at every turn.
Something like a Stuxnet would have to have been created externally and then inserted into the system.
PAIGE: Walter? Okay, so according to this diagnostic, the building system was fully operational at 6:23 P.
M.
today and began to falter at 6:25.
During those two minutes, I was installing the code for the kitchen automation.
So this worm came from you? And how's that possible? This is way too massive a file to embedded in an e-mail.
It had to have been physically planted on my drive, but that would have taken hours.
And my computer's not been out of my sight for - Stella.
- Who? Was the woman, uh, that insisted I have that drink.
But I only had one drink.
What if she drugged me to get access to my laptop and then put that worm in? You went out drinking the night before the launch? This is the work of some woman in a bar? This sounds like a load of crap.
You were in charge of this system and now it is corrupted.
You need to find that woman.
If we can get more information on the coding of that virus, then I can stop it.
It all starts with her.
Let's go.
Come on! Okay, not good, Walter! Things are escalating down here.
Guys, it's getting a little smoky in here.
Same thing is happening up here.
This is my fault.
How I was hacked.
I'm the single point of failure.
How does this happen with 50 of the top tech reporters downstairs? I don't think the timing of this is a coincidence.
Now, can you think of anyone who would want to do this to you? Why are you so confident that this is about us? Because this is not my building or my launch.
It's your technology.
Whoever did this must know that I'm an effective conduit to you.
We'll make this a two-pronged investigation.
Our side, and yours.
Regardless of the origin, I will fix this.
Trust me.
HAPPY: Walt, things are not improving down here.
And we could use the fire department.
They're on their way.
(phone ringing) Yeah.
Dan, where are you? Richard, I just walked out to the car to get my phone.
I can't get back in.
And people are banging on the lobby doors, trying to get out.
(alarm wailing) Walt, bring me the intercom speaker! Don't ask why! Okay.
Yeah.
Walt! What what are you doing? You You gotta trust me.
Toby, you out of the elevator? Ah No dice.
The panels in the ceiling only depress about half an inch.
I can't get them fully open.
Sylvester, what's your status? Scared.
Anxious.
Worried.
Tell the kids it's gonna be okay.
Actually, that's my status.
Sylvester, remember that you're the adult here.
The kids are going to look to you for help.
Why are we stuck in here? It was probably just a glitch.
It's okay, guys.
We will be out of here in a bit.
- (phone rings) - Paige? PAIGE: We're driving to the hotel.
Fill us in on this Stella? Yeah, uh, dark hair, brown eyes, uh, distinct dimples.
Low waist-to-hip ratio Walter, let's move on past the physical.
Not sure he has.
Maybe you picked up something a napkin, a book of matches? Wait, wait, wait my clothes from last night they're in Cabe's SUV, in the back, third row.
Okay, I'll check through your stuff.
We'll call you back.
In general, men can be pretty clueless.
Walter takes that to another level.
Oh, this glimpse of him, not in control, is insightful, that's all.
For example, his shirt smells like the cheap perfume in his room.
Maybe we can give it to a scent-tracking dog who specializes in finding sluts.
(gasping) We have to stop the fire before the embers are sucked into the vents and spread all over the building.
I'm not painting my nails here.
We're going to use the low-frequency sound waves to kill the flames.
If we blast a song between 30 and 60 hertz, it can separate the oxygen from the fire and keep it from reigniting.
We have to move now, Happy.
I am moving as fast as I can, O'Brien.
(hip-hop beat throbbing) Okay, stand back.
Ah, it's not strong enough.
Okay, it's too hot to get closer.
We have to increase the size of the gain horn.
We don't have time.
I'll get it closer.
No! You're gonna burn your face off.
Finally! Got it.
(coughing) This is taking too long! Every second the fire spreads, the higher the risk of embers spreading through the vents.
Okay, Walt, stop! (hip-hop beat continues throbbing) It's working.
Ah Uh, Walt, you're on fire! (Walter screams) - Come on - (Walter gasping) WALTER: The fire's out.
We have to get to the control room.
(Walter coughing) Hey! You do realize this isn't your fault.
I'm socially vulnerable.
The perfect mark for an attractive woman at the bar.
This is absolutely my fault and I'm gonna fix it.
Did you put it out with your bare hands? HAPPY: Close.
Okay, now that the pump room fire is under control, we can tackle each failing system one by one.
Let him handle it, okay? I feel like we just interrupted a conversation.
About us.
In all honesty, we were discussing how unlikely it is that someone from our side of the company would commit sabotage.
We have drawn no conclusions.
We just want the building under control.
Good.
You got burned.
MAN: Sorry.
Vrakas.
Who? Call Paige and Cabe.
It was Jon Vrakas that steered me to this Stella person.
Sounds like a long shot.
Walter, if the fire is still out, how come there's smoke still coming through the vents? The geothermal system should be back online.
Any residual smoke should clear up momentarily.
Dan, what can you tell me? DAN: Firefighters have tried to get into the building, but the anti-terrorism protocols are impenetrable.
No, no it, it's-it's okay, we have a little time.
The fire is contained.
The fire has not been contained.
Not by a long shot.
Put on the news.
WOMAN: Fire has broken out at Richard Elia's headquarters.
Reports are coming in that the firefighters cannot get into the building.
The embers spread through the vents and ignited those floors.
That's just under the game room.
My son is in there.
Get a truck and smash through those damn anti-terror blockades! That is what they're designed to prevent.
No one will get through.
SYLVESTER: We're sealed in by tempered glass windows and a locked fire door.
WALTER: Okay, Sylvester, I am gonna find a way to get you out.
Just trust me.
All of you, please just trust me.
(typing rapidly) SYLVESTER: Okay, guys, we're gonna be just fine.
I don't know anything about a guy being drugged.
Just please, low voices.
When you yell, it's like a hammer to my skull.
Focus fast, Mr.
Vrakas, or we can do that hammer thing for real.
Did you steer him to a girl at a bar? Yeah.
Why'd you do that? She seemed interested.
So did he.
How much so? All right, let's circle back to that.
Did you know her? Never met her before.
We were just partying.
And I'm no expert on the subject, but I don't know about your guy being blacked out or drugged.
He was raging.
For hours.
This guy was raging? Buying rounds, telling jokes.
He was on fire.
Yeah, it's real farfetched, pal.
I remember one of the jokes.
If an optimist sees a cup as half full, and a pessimist sees it as half empty, what does the engineer see? A cup that's too big by half.
He tells that joke all the time.
- Hardly a joke.
- Yeah, it's not funny at all.
But, you know, you learn something.
Bottom line, your dude had a few too many and hooked up.
Okay, you can shut up now, okay? All right.
We're done.
Walter partying? Macking some random woman? Is there a world where that actually happened? We just got the opinion of one guy.
Security should have pulled the surveillance by now, and we'll get the truth.
So does anybody here know any good camp fire songs? My eyes itch.
When are we gonna get out of here? Soon.
(coughing) My throat hurts.
Okay.
Okay.
Think.
What would the team do if they were here right now? Walter would probably tell me to focus on the first evident problem, which is smoke inhalation.
Toby would probably just annoy me.
And Happy Happy would build something.
Like smoke filtration masks.
Okay, kids, this will only be a second.
(Sylvester panting) (coughs) WALTER: This is insanity! The second I rebuild a code bridge, the worm corrupts it behind me.
I'm really starting to doubt that you are the right man for this job.
HAPPY: Oh, you think you can handle it? What age did you win the coding Olympics? ELIA: Okay, enough! Walter, you told me to trust you.
I do.
What are your ideas? We have to completely reboot the system from the server.
- Revert to your original program.
- Yeah.
Then we can restart the system, bit by bit, without the worm.
Then we can open the vents, start the sprinklers, kill the fire.
- Hold on.
Hold on.
- Please.
Please.
We are talking about literally unplugging the brains of the building.
- Yes.
- If we're unable to reboot, - we are hopeless.
- I understand.
- We are sealed.
My son will be trapped.
- I'm aware of that.
Can't blame a man for worrying about his son.
We're all worried.
Then let's go.
Now.
Thank you.
See, this is fun.
We're learning how to do different things.
Making a mask from a dismantled charcoal filter.
(coughing) Can anybody tell me what activated charcoal is? (coughing) It's carbon that's been treated with oxygen to open up the millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms.
And those tiny pores attract chemicals like the particles in smoke? Yes! Now, you tell me this isn't just like camp.
(coughing) Except for the choking to death.
You're a real wit, Russell, but we're not choking to death.
We're just uncomfortable.
Coughing is uncomfortable, choking is uncomfortable.
Plunging headfirst into a tank full of fish feces and food bits is, for me, off the uncomfortable scale.
But it is something that we will all accept because we are mature.
Right? I'm just open a Want to help me? Thank you.
See? Everybody's gonna be fine.
Okay, the server room is five floors up.
The building's water pressure and temperature's controlled by the automated system.
That steam's over 200 degrees.
Okay, good thing we missed that.
Whoa! Whoa, whoa, whoa! Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! That was close.
Looks like the worm is following us.
It's malicious.
All the tech in the building that ran facial recognition to-to pick our favorite songs or monitor room temperature is now guessing where we are and attacking.
Like it was designed to make the tech look bad.
Yeah, well, we don't have time to just stand around here.
I can run through it.
Okay, are you crazy?! You're gonna melt your skin! Why are you so determined to kill yourself? Toby, where the hell are you? I made my way out of the elevator solo, thank you.
What floor are you on? - 15.
- Okay, perfect.
Head to the server room.
Now, we'll try and meet you, but if you beat us, we will talk you through the reboot protocol.
I'm on my way.
(grunts) Ta-da! Ooh, my lingula.
Guys, I don't think I'm making it to the server room any time soon.
Would you look at that? If I wasn't seeing it, I wouldn't believe it.
That's where he ordered a round of shots.
I want drinks for everyone! It's like he's possessed by some evil spirit that's in a fraternity.
Back up the footage to when he first gets the drink.
Back up, back up.
Keep going Stop! All right, keep your eyes on the girl's hands, and see if she slips him anything into his drink.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's out of frame at the crucial moment.
I can't see if she put anything in his glass.
It's really Was she acting odd? No.
She did turn down a few guys before this one showed up.
CABE: Well, maybe she was waiting for him.
Or she's just picky and likes math humor.
If she wasn't specifically targeting Walter, then that means he was just wrong? That he just somehow messed up the programming at that building.
Is that what we're saying? We're investigating, so we're looking at every angle.
Her purse! Stop the footage? Yeah, Clementine Gym.
Super fancy, it costs a fortune.
I think Gwyneth Paltrow goes there.
They'll have this woman's photo on file.
What the hell's keeping you guys?! The vindictive steam pipes seem to recognize us! Oh, boy.
Aah! (shouting gibberish) Look at me, Mr.
Self-Sufficient.
Just got here on my own.
No one helped me, just so you know.
Okay, what the hell's wrong with the men on this team today? I'm totally fine.
I'm fine on my own.
Walter, I'm at the server controls.
Okay, I'm gonna walk you through the reboot protocols.
So, there's server blades in the back.
We're gonna be up there in a minute, but we don't have a minute to waste.
Okay, Walter, I'm at the server blades.
(rapid beeping) Don't like the sound of that.
Sound of what? Oh, the worm.
The servers are spinning too fast.
They're overheating.
It's the same as Stuxnet.
It's designed to attack programmable logic controllers.
If it spins too fast, it will ignite.
Walter, it's louder.
Okay, Toby, get the hell out of there! Oh! Oh! (grunting) Aah! Toby, now! What's happening here? It seals to contain the fire.
The one damned fire protocol that's working.
That's nice.
Now get me out of here! Get back! This isn't working! What's the plan? We can't just sit here and watch him cook.
Come on, what's that look? Okay, so the server room is protected by a hypoxic air technology system.
It sucks the oxygen out of the room to kill the fire.
Yeah, but wouldn't doing that also kill the Toby? They system's down now, because of the worm.
But there's a manual override right over there! I engage it, I-I put out that fire, - I save the building and everyone in it.
- Except me.
- Toby, listen - No, no, no, you listen! You cannot suck the air out of this room, Walter! You even say the words "greater good" and I swear If the server is gone, then we will never open the doors, we will never get the sprinklers working, and everyone in the building will die! But there's a very good chance that we could revive you.
Okay, you've been making too many rash moves today, and I'm not let you make another one! TOBY: You're showing guilt markers.
You feel responsible for this fiasco.
You're taking undue risk.
No, no, no, no, no! Stay away from that panel! I have a method to douse the flames.
I thought of all by myself.
Huh?! (grunting) Yeah, what?! Who are you? We need a minute.
Now.
I just saw a guy, I thought he was cute.
We talked and went back to his room.
How did you end up in that bar? I saw a few of the presentations.
Just fascinated by tech? It's what I'm studying at Long Beach.
Saw the presentation, and then what? I got a drink.
You don't seem like someone who would have an agenda against Richard Elia's company.
More like the opposite.
I would love to work for the guy one day.
So if someone paid you to slip our guy a little something? Never happened.
You get that we're talking about a building on fire with kids trapped inside? CABE: And that the worm that was planted in Walter's computer is so destructive, without the original code, he's having a hell of a time getting rid of it.
I don't know anything about that You had a drink and went back to his room? - Yes.
- And then what? And then Are you his girlfriend or something? I am his friend-slash-colleague, and we are trying to save lives.
CABE: You understand that I'm a Homeland agent.
I'm gonna run your computer and cell records.
If you have anything to do with this, we're gonna find out about it.
I don't roofie people.
Especially not your "friend-slash-colleague.
" PAIGE: I don't believe her.
What if we run this girl's records, but nothing pops? Then our prospects of proving Walter was drugged are not looking good.
And if, God forbid, someone dies in that building and it looks like it was because of Walter's software, that's homicide.
Walter, he he would never just make a mistake.
Don't we all make mistakes? (alarm beeping) Toby, we're seconds away from losing the server! (alarm continues beeping) I can fight it! No, don't! (alarm blaring) I promise this will work.
(alarm continues blaring) He will not have oxygen for a very short period of time.
(muffled): Walter! As soon as this fire's out, I turn it off and I manually blast in O2, okay? That's enough! The flames are dying! No, they're not dead yet! Just ten more seconds! You hit the room with air now, and the server could reignite.
Ten, nine, eight You got a lot of balls killing me, O'Brien.
I will rise again.
five - Walt, we got to get in there! - four, three, two, one.
(beeping) It's not working.
Okay, it didn't work! He's gonna suffocate! Hey, Walter! He's dying in there! What the hell did you do?! He's dying in there! HAPPY: Walt, the doc's turning blue.
- Are you hearing me? - (alarm continues blaring) The air's being sucked out of his lungs.
"The air's being sucked out of his lungs.
" We don't need to smash the glass.
The vacuum will do it.
HAPPY: We just have to crack the glass a fraction of an inch.
The vacuum-pull on compromised glass will shatter it.
Except anything that we throw against it bounces off.
Yeah, well, bullet-resistant glass is layered.
That's why it bends on impact.
We just need something to pierce it.
A laser, a needle something extremely dense.
Tungsten carbide! When you first met him, Elia gave you a pen that's made out of TC.
The one you wouldn't let Toby touch because you were - too proud of it.
- He would've lost it.
Okay, we need a slingshot.
Ah! Scissors, scissors! It's a little bit odd that there are billions in modern electronics in this building, and we're solving these problems with technology that David used to beat Goliath.
- All right, stand back.
- All right.
(alarm continues blaring) Not good.
Wait for it.
Okay, don't bother yourself helping me.
There's no efficiency difference between one and two man CPR.
Okay, come on.
Breathe, Toby.
(coughing) I could've Yeah, you could've died, but you didn't.
I could've done that on my own.
You're a lunatic.
Okay, I do not think that there was significant damage done to the server.
This should restore our programming to settings prior to the worm attack.
I'm happy to be alive, thank you, Walter.
But how are you feeling? Okay, so once we reboot the system, we can put out the fire and get Sylvester and the kids out to safety.
SYLVESTER: Stay low.
Air quality is better closer to the floor.
Do we know exactly what's burning below us? Good question.
Not sure.
Walter, please tell me you have some news.
Yeah.
Getting there.
We're close! RUSSELL: I learned in school that when some things burn, they give off toxic chemicals.
You look on the dark side.
So do I, but I'm learning that life is a mix of both good and bad.
(mechanical thump) See? Positivity's practically my middle name.
So we're rebooting system by system, starting with ventilation and then the doors.
Make sure the firefighters are ready.
They'll have access in 20 seconds.
(laughs) - Yeah! - (sighs) Yeah! The sprinklers are operational! (electronics powering up) (pop music playing over speakers) Hey, Walter, while we have 20 seconds.
What's this about? Something not your business, which is why they walked out there.
With the clarity of one recently risen from the dead, you're being a grade "A" tool.
You have a bruised ego from getting drugged by a bimbo, and you're being reckless.
This has nothing to do with me or my ego.
Am I embarrassed? Yes.
Am I desperate to find out who's responsible for this? Definitely.
I might offer a deeper psychological basis, i.
e.
, your fraught relationship with Elia.
I should probably get back to running the checks.
You worked yourself to near exhaustion the past few weeks on this project just to prove to your mentor, the superstar billionaire, that you're just like him, a natural protégé.
What's wrong with that? Well, the big guy didn't get his name on a building by killing his teammates.
One thing to overcompensate for yourself, you almost killed me in there.
I calculated a very high probability of reviving you in there.
Oh, how comforting.
The choice I made worked.
By the skin of your teeth, Walter.
Really, my teeth.
Fine.
You know what? From now on, no undue risk.
How's that sound? It's easy to say at the finish line.
You're trying to undo the events at the bar, and acting like a madman's not gonna make that happen.
Nothing is gonna make that happen.
You see my point? No.
You can't un-ring a bell, Walter.
Walt, we got a problem.
What's happening? Looks like the worm is reinfecting the system.
ADLER: What the hell is this?! - (alarm beeping) - WALTER: No, no, no, no, no.
Should not be happening.
Sylvester, are you out of the game room? The doors are still locked, and there's smoke again.
Why is this happening, Walter? After the reboot, somehow the worm reinstalled.
But originally it came from your computer.
You didn't use your laptop on the reboot.
Reinstalled externally.
HAPPY: From what? A device somewhere in the building? Or just close by.
It would have to be a device in communication with the building's system.
It's keeping the worm continually active.
It's like those birthday candles you can't blow out.
Nobody likes those.
If I just knew the simplest elements of the worm's original design, then I could disable it, but without knowing that, it will take hours.
SYLVESTER: Walter, we don't have hours.
The smoke is getting worse.
We need to know who did this.
Thanks for the update.
There's no suspicious activity on Stella's cell phone.
She calls her mom every day, she has an ex in Chicago, but no communication with anyone in Richard Elia's company.
They e-mailed Stella's records.
Boring Web activity.
Tabloid sites, shopping sites, social media.
Wait, there's a dating site Sweet Companionship.
That's women looking for sugar daddies or rich guys looking for hookers.
I know about it because they spam single women like me ten times a week.
Did I say anything? What if this woman was hired to drug Walter? Okay, she last visited the site yesterday at 6:14 p.
m.
That's 20 minutes before Walter went into the bar.
We need to find out who she's been communicating with on that Web site.
WALTER: Structural integrity of the game room has been compromised.
SYLVESTER: This is not news to us! The fire below has eaten a hole through the floor! Sylvester, stay away from the center of the room.
Way ahead of you! Walter, through this whole catastrophe, I have tried to remain calm and be the adult in here.
And doing amazing at it, Sly.
But the gaping maw in the center of the room looks like a portal to hell! (all screaming) You need to get us out of here now, Walter! Fire chopper has just arrived, if you can - get to the roof.
- There's no way to the roof.
All access doors are sealed tight or engulfed in flames.
SYLVESTER: Hate to concur, but there's no way out of here.
Except through the windows.
No, it's double-paned, shatterproof.
And then after that, it is a plunge down 170 feet to the concrete.
(building groaning) Oh.
Heat from the fire is bending the building supports.
That might be a good thing.
Sylvester, check the integrity of the windowpane.
The shift in the building exposed the corner of the glass.
The space between the double-paned windows is filled with gas, yes? To cool the building in sunlight.
Great.
We just need to make it explode.
Sylvester, get a flame to the corner of the window, heat the gas; the gas will the expand and crack the window.
Where am I supposed to get flame? You know what? Scratch that.
Got it covered.
Can you go break that lamp and bring me a leg? Come on, guys.
Okay, so even if we manage to crack the window, you're still failing to address the 170-foot drop.
Fire department helicopter will drop a rope ladder, and you'll climb up.
That sounds harrowing.
Thank you.
(coughs) Okay.
Uh okay.
Guys, guys, shield your eyes.
Okay, go, hide, hide! (helicopter whirring) It's open! Tell the fire department helicopter to drop a rope ladder right now! Dan, do you have that? Got it.
(panting) (Sylvester shudders) Between out there and in here, I don't know which one is more terrifying! (phone rings) Cabe.
All right, we're at the headquarters of Sweet Companionship Web site.
We called, and they're still open.
- Walk us through it.
- Well, if we're gonna find out who hired this Stella to drug Walter, we're gonna have to access their secure client files.
That means divide and conquer.
Cabe, you're a rich guy interested in their services.
Paige, you're his assistant.
You're gonna get the receptionist or secretary, whoever, away from the computer while Cabe answers intake questions.
How do I get the password? When you're at the computer, I'll walk you through it.
Oh, and you got about five minutes to do this because we're all on the brink of death.
No pressure.
The fire department says they can't send a man down the rope ladder.
The heat from the fires has created too much wind.
It's convection current.
Mr.
Dodd! Good to know! The smoke from the fires is getting bad.
The fire department chopper says they have about a minute before they have to bug out.
The ladder needs an anchor to get it near the building.
It reaches well below Sylvester's floor.
I can get to it.
I have an idea! I really hate the sound of this.
(muttering): What would Toby do? Oh, your boss shouldn't be more than a few minutes.
Oh, no, he can take his time.
You know I saw a car in the parking lot, windows up.
There was a dog inside.
Might be a little late in the day, but it's pretty warm out.
What kind of car? Um, late model Celica.
It's dirt brown.
Some people should not be allowed to own dogs.
I know, right? Come on, Toby.
(phone ringing) (sighs) Okay.
Check those windows.
Okay.
Here.
Happy, lighter! Hey, get down! Eyes! Sylvester! Sly! Hey! I have a plan! Get the kids ready to climb onto the ladder! Okay.
So you mentioned a plan.
I'm not seeing a good one.
Ladder just needs an anchor.
Uh, I'm not liking your sprinter stance.
I know I promised not to do anything irrational anymore, but, uh, one more time.
(screams, groans) (screaming) He's out of his mind.
Okay, grab him and anchor the ladder.
That was the stupidest thing I've ever seen but effective.
(groans) I got it! Got the ladder! Come on, kids, come on.
Quickly, come on.
Guys, it's just like the jungle gym.
Okay? FIREMAN: Send the kids up now! Come on.
Come on, first one out, let's go.
Little ones first.
Lola, come on.
Good job.
One hand over the other.
That's right.
Keep going, keep going, you're good.
Okay, buddy.
In an incredible act of heroism, an unidentified person leapt from the building to secure a rescue ladder Walter did it! The kids are gonna be okay.
(phone buzzes) Richard.
Walter's not a savior.
He's the problem.
Chester? No.
(sighs) Cute Chester? No.
Sweet Chester? Baby Chester? Oh, my God, I'm in.
Okay.
Stella.
All right, keep going! Remember to look up and head towards the firefighters.
Look up, keep going.
Give me your hand.
We're running out of time.
You're all right.
There's too much turbulence.
Two's in, number two is secure.
How's your visibility? Your turn, Russell.
Can you still see? My comics! Okay, Russell, you need to go, now! (softly): Okay.
Okay, buddy.
The smoke's too heavy! We got to go now! (over speaker): We have to pull out! The smoke's too heavy.
We'll be back as soon as we can.
Sly! Hey, stay calm! We're gonna get you down, okay? We can't get him down.
And we can't wait for another chopper.
He's got minutes before the floor collapses into the fire.
TOBY: That's a 170-foot drop from the window.
Even Super Fun Guy wouldn't make it.
There has to be a third way.
What if we could use the building's smart tech to our advantage? That would be a first for today.
Can you rig an emergency light to amplify its output? To where it feels like you're looking at the sun.
Good, 'cause we're gonna need a huge amount of light to extend the building's retractable solar panels.
Create a solar panel staircase for Sly to climb down.
Oh, that's brilliant! I mean, that might work.
Homeland is running the name and number of Stella's last hookup.
Should be just a few minutes.
How many years have you known Walter? Have you ever seen him act like the guy in the surveillance footage? Jovial, laughing, joking No.
Yeah.
Just makes me wonder if there's another aspect to his personality.
An aspect he doesn't let me us see.
We all make choices about letting people in.
Is that what Walter's doing? (phone ringing) Gallo.
Great.
Thanks so much.
The names are fake, no surprise.
The cell is a burner.
Oh, so we're back to square one? Not quite.
They triangulated the number back to Elia's Research and Development campus in Santa Monica.
It was an inside job.
Someone in the company.
- (engine starts) - At this hour, we should make it in no time.
TOBY: I can get it.
If it would just come loose.
Okay, I know how to do this.
See? I don't need your help.
(groans) God! You just punched me! You realize ten minutes ago I was technically deceased! Yeah, I should have left you that way.
You're acting like a child, and I am sick of it.
I was trying to prove my ability to be independent from you.
Yeah, you made it pretty obvious.
Now help, or get out of the way.
But if you assert your independence again, the next time you die it'll be for real.
The sensors are on the edge of the panel.
Once they get hit by the light, they should extend.
You can use them like a staircase to get down to us.
You got it? But step quick.
I can only extend one at a time.
Ah, come on.
SYLVESTER: This might be a sign that this plan is highly dangerous and frankly, a little rash! Oh, that panel looks very flimsy.
I'm gonna run the calculation on the chances it can even hold me.
No, no, no.
Don't run the calculations! Just trust us that we can get you down.
WALTER: Look at me.
You can do this.
Okay? (sighs) (whimpers) (whimpers) Just don't look down.
(screams) I looked down! It was the first thing I did! (screaming) Happy, my panel is disappearing! HAPPY: Because the light is extending the next one.
Step down! WALTER: Sylvester, just step down.
Do it now! (screams) Hang on, hang on, hang on.
TOBY: Just a few more, and you'll be in our loving arms.
(cracking) My calculations would have predicted this! This one's gonna catch you, Sly.
SYLVESTER: I don't want to be caught! I don't want to fall at all! Sly, hang on! The power source.
What the hell happened to the juice? Guys, a little help up here! Power in this room is still on.
Must be an issue with a specific blade in the server room.
Hold on.
I got an idea.
Just hold tight, Sly.
(whimpering): Oh, no.
Hey! Sylvester's about to fall off the side of the building! What the hell are you doing? What we should have done hours ago.
Taken back control of the building.
We're gonna get Dan up to speed on this program, and see if he can clean this up.
Dan doesn't know how to run this system.
It would take him two hours, at least, just to get familiar with this interface.
You need to re-engage that power source now.
It is the only thing that can save Sylvester from plummeting to his death.
Walter, I have been giving you the benefit of the doubt all day but I have to stop listening to you.
We received an e-mail about you.
An e-mail? You ever heard of counterfeiting malware? Yeah, it's a security measure the coders use to deter the theft of proprietary software.
And what has this got to do with anything? You ran out of time, so ripped off elements of the smart building system from a third party.
That had hidden malware.
And now we are dealing with the consequences! That is un That is untrue.
Now, whoever sent that e-mail is the responsible party, and is trying to set me up for something that they did.
I don't think you meant to hurt anybody, but you overreached.
Okay, then, where's the e-mail? Show it to me.
Come on! I think it's very possible that you wanted this too much, Walter.
You wanted to impress me too much, and this is the result.
You need to get the server blades back in, so we can save Sylvester.
Leave this room now.
You no longer have any contact with any of the building controls.
- Got it? - I'm sorry, Walter.
Hey, hey, hey I need to save my friend's life.
Guys I'm not sure how long I can hang on up here! I thought positivity was your middle name! HAPPY: Walt's gonna have the power back on any second.
I met the woman of my dreams and I just received my Super-dor.
I am not ready to go! You know, I did everything that I could to save your son.
But more importantly, the man about to fall from that building, Sylvester Dodd, risked his own life, so he could save him, too.
I am not returning control of this building to you.
You are at worst a liar, and at best incompetent! The accusatory e-mail just consider what you know of me today, and what you know about that sender.
You don't know the sender.
It was anonymous.
The guy's a gutless coward.
Versus Sylvester? A paranoid, neurotic compulsive who put aside all of his anxieties, just so he could save those kids.
Now, please, hang me if you want.
But let him live.
I can't just let him fall! I am thinking! Ah! The power's back on! Sly, hold on! What are you doing?! Not that panel! The one directly beneath me! Trust me! (squeaking) (shuddering): Oh, no Oh! (Sylvester shouts) (gasps, then laughs) I made it! (gasping) I can't believe it! Oh, whew! Oh, I'm in pain.
But I'm alive! That burner phone's in here somewhere.
Keep calling it.
So many people have left the building for the day.
What if one of them has the phone? Then we're screwed.
(phone ringing) CABE: The guy who hired Stella is a fancy executive.
Excuse me.
Hey! Can-can I help you with something? - (phone ringing) - Homeland.
We need a key for that office now.
We don't use keys here.
Well, how the hell do you unlock the doors? Implant technology.
That's what we develop here.
(phone continues ringing) FEMALE ELECTRONIC VOICE: Thank you.
(ringing continues) PAIGE: Oh! There.
Our burner.
Look familiar? Oh! Oh! You made it! A bit of a rough landing, but I owe you my life, my riches, my firstborn! - Your comics? - Not that.
- (phone ringing) - Okay It's Paige.
- Hey.
- CABE: Walter! We found the man who hired the escort to drug you! It's Dan Smaisle.
Elia's Head of Biometrics.
He specializes in implant technology.
He must have the transmitter chip that uploads the worm implanted into this arm.
Since he's running point, right outside, he's close enough that the virus reloads every time we re-boot the system.
But why would he do this? You know the guy before tonight? No.
Cabe you have to find Smaisle and kill that chip.
HAPPY: It's the only chance we have to get the doors open.
Hang tight.
Hang tight.
Okay, once we get the call from Cabe, I'm going to be able to manually open the lobby doors.
- Everything's gonna be fine - You son of a bitch! - You son of a bitch! - Hey! Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey! Listen to me.
Listen to me! Elia! It was Smaisle.
It was Smaisle.
He hired that escort to drug me, so he could plant that virus.
TOBY: I don't see any of Dan's biometrics in this building.
Now, were those in the budget before old Walter came along? Well, he tripled the tech budget three weeks ago.
I slashed Dan's funding.
So he tried to ruin your launch, to get back at you.
(gasping) Split up.
We're gonna search the crowd.
Okay.
(speaking quietly) Freeze! - (tires screech) - (grunts) Don't move! CABE: Out of the way! I didn't mean for it to get this far.
I just wanted to prove a point.
Walter said the chip would be in his arm.
I stayed nearby, didn't I? I tried to help.
Yeah, you staying nearby is what kept the damn thing rebooting.
All it was supposed to do is lock the doors and race the A/C for an hour.
Scare people, then disappear.
Hey, how do we kill the implant so it won't reinstall the worm? Smash it or shock it.
Stun gun.
He just came out of nowhere and took all my funding.
I swear I'm not a bad person.
I didn't want anyone to get hurt.
Neither do we.
(groaning) We fried the chip.
If the worm is dead, then I should be able to reinstate emergency systems now! OFFICER: This way, people.
(people coughing) OFFICER: Take your time.
Okay, great.
Can we please leave now? Smaisle sent the anonymous e-mail.
- Sorry I doubted you.
- Eh.
I'm sorry I hit you over the head with a laptop.
You know for what it's worth, I think it's admirable that you tried.
The next one will work.
The next one? Are you gonna do this again? This failed.
Walter, people think I'm some kind of brilliant visionary.
The reason I'm successful is because, on the heels of defeat, I start all over again.
Failure is part of the process.
You don't know where you're vulnerable until you fail.
(exhaling) Cabe just got word Stella was arrested.
She gave it up in the police car: drugging you, planting the worm.
I I have to admit uh, that I had some complicated feelings about you hitting on Stella.
I did not hit on Stella.
I was practicing to be more normal around people.
And then she drugged me.
Very different thing.
Well, I-I'm, I'm proud of you for trying to connect with, with people who aren't like you.
It probably scared you more than being in that building.
But you-you did it, anyway.
Don't let this one horrible experience stop you from trying to connect with people.
There's more inside of you, you know, than you know, Walter.
You can't unring a bell.
Something Toby said.
I think it means, uh, that now I'm aware of these facts, there's no returning to who I was.
We'll see about that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Hey, John McClane, you need a ride? Who's John McClane? Some guy in a movie.
Never mind.
Let's go.
so, you know, the, uh, buildings are about to go up in flames, and then we caught Smaisle.
The, uh, yeah, the bad guy.
And, uh, you know, made it out alive.
Dude! That's is just like that movie! Oh, yeah! With John McCain.
Mm.
Not quite.
All right, well Yeah! Looks like we're done for the day.
Well, you know what that means.
Happiest hour of the day.
Happy hour.
At a bar.
People, food, music any of that ringing a bell? Great deals no? Nothing? Anyhoo I'd invite you, but I know you'd probably say no, brother, so, uh, I'll see you later, okay? Okay.
Oh! Hey, um Ray I'll go.
Yeah? Yeah.
Sweet! This time, I am going to stick to club soda.
Roger that.
Roger that.
