[tense music playing]
[muffled] Mickey?
Mickey?
[gasps] Help!
[muffled] I need an EMT!
I need you to send someone, please!
[screaming] Help! Help!
I'm not gonna leave you.
I'm right here. I'm not gonna leave.
[EMT] Male. Mid to late thirties.
[doctor] Check on that flail chest.
Severe bruising of the liver.
Deformity to the left arm.
- Pupils are dilated.
- I need a CT, stat.
[nurse] Clear this area!
[EMT] One, two
- [Mickey] Oh fuck!
- Push 20 milligrams of morphine.
- [EMT] Yes, Doctor.
- [monitor beeping]
Where's that CT?
Coming!
- [beeping continues]
- [Mickey grunts]
[doctor 2] Get that line going.
[steady beeping]
[high-pitched ringing]
[train horn blares]
[children laughing, squealing]
[woman, in Spanish] Mickey, be careful!
I don't want you to fall.
He's just like his father.
No matter what, it's never enough.
He was always looking for more.
[in Spanish] Look! Mommy!
Mommy!
[Mickey screams]
Hey. Hey. Mick.
- Hey.
- [monitor beeping]
You're in the hospital.
Doctor says you're gonna be okay.
They broke your arm, four ribs.
Did a number on your liver.
[groans] Is that it?
Can I have some water?
Yeah.
You wanna
- There you go.
- Thanks.
The doctor said you got super lucky.
[in Spanish] It was really scary.
[in Spanish] I know, but I'm here, Mija.
Do you know who it was?
[sighs] Well,
I have a pretty good idea. Yeah.
Cafeteria's open if you
Oh, uh, I can give you a minute.
No, it's okay.
I have to get her something to eat.
I love you, honey.
Love you too.
Izzy's been here all night.
She's the one who found you.
I'll be back in a bit, okay?
Thank you.
Well, I know what you're thinking.
[door closes]
The parking garage, again?
Right?
- Good thing meters take Apple Pay now.
- Hmm.
How did you find me?
I was worried.
You weren't answering your phone.
Luckily, I AirTagged all the Lincolns.
You were on the ground by the car.
When the ambulance got there,
you came to for a second,
but all you said was,
"Don't call my mother."
[hesitates] You didn't, did you?
[chuckles softly]
Oh, good.
You in pain?
Not really. Not with this stuff.
I'm gonna ask them to take me off of it.
I'm not getting hooked again.
There's only so much pain
a person can handle.
They'll wean you off it when it's time.
Oh, no. I'm not taking chances. I
I can handle a little pain.
Izzy, I'm [exhales]
I'm sorry you had to be
the one to find me like that.
I know how tough that must have been.
It's not that. It's, uh
You're the only one with keys to my car.
I know.
I haven't slept since this happened.
[sighs] Let me guess.
Ray came up with the down payment
for the studio?
I couldn't figure out how she did it.
And then
I parked the Lincoln
at my house last week.
Keys were on the kitchen counter.
[Mickey, quietly] Hmm.
[Izzy] Someone had to pay her
to steal that contract.
It's over now. I kicked her out, and
I'm sorry.
This wasn't your fault, Izzy.
[Izzy] Of course it was.
You warned me. You saw it, and I couldn't.
Wouldn't.
Maybe Ray stole the contract, but
[groans]I bet it was Henry Dahl
who put her up to it.
Dahl?
You sure?
He's the only one who benefits.
You still have the cash Ray gave you?
Yeah, but I'm not gonna keep it.
That's not what I meant. I may need it.
Just, you know, hold onto it.
I need to check his vitals.
I'll come back later.
[suspenseful music playing]
[opening theme music playing]
[door opens]
[Cisco] No rest for the weary?
[groans] I don't have time for a rest.
I've got a trial coming up.
There's all these other cases
that were piling up before now.
Lorna talked to Tony Walsh about
taking over some of them like you said.
- Well, he's gonna have to take some more.
- Yeah.
It's all right. He'll be happy.
He's been hounding me
ever since the Elliott case.
Well, at least you're starting to look
like Mickey Haller again.
Less like a reject from Fight Club.
Could you tell my doctor that?
Maybe she'll let me out of here.
Otherwise, I'm gonna lose my mind.
Mick, there's a lot of things
I'd do for you,
but that doctor reminds me
of my third grade teacher.
We used to call her Evil Miss Leavel.
Yeah. Where are we with Alex Grant?
Nowhere yet, but I was thinking.
Whoever jumped you
must have known about the newly-installed
security cameras in the garage.
Cops find anything yet?
They're not going to.
These two detectives came to talk to me.
Friends of Lankford.
I don't think they're even
trying to solve this case.
Those guys were professionals, Cisco.
They didn't touch my nose.
They've left my cojones alone.
They weren't trying to kill me.
It's a message. Had to be Grant.
If you're shouting from the rooftops
that we're trying to subpoena him,
it's not hard for him
to put two and two together.
He doesn't want us
connecting him to Bondurant's murder.
That part makes sense.
What's weird is how they ambushed me
while I was looking for a contract
that Henry Dahl stole out of my Lincoln.
You think that Dahl
and Alex Grant are connected?
- And I need you to prove it.
- [door opens]
Hey! I come bearing French dips
from Phillipe's.
Do not worry. I got you the lamb.
[Mickey] Ooh.
Nice.
[groans]
Thank you, Lorna.
The food here is enough
to put you in the hospital
if you weren't already in the hospital.
Hospitals make me so nervous.
They smell funny,
and there are ghosts everywhere.
I also got you that agua fresca
from the truck on Sunset,
and I grabbed you a cannoli
from Pinocchio's.
I'm gonna give you a raise.
Also, I owe you an apology.
I said some things that night
I shouldn't have.
No, Mickey, we both said things
we shouldn't have said.
- I think you've been punished enough.
- Yeah.
But about that raise.
How much were you thinking?
You might wanna add a zero when you hear
about the other present I brought for you.
What, you have a lobster in your purse?
[Lorna] Even better.
You know how Cisco was saying
the reason Alex Grant can stay in hiding
is because of all his money?
Guy owns property everywhere.
Just goes from one spot to another.
Never has to come up for air.
Well, it occurred to me that
maybe money is also his Achilles heel.
I did a bit of digging
into his personal life.
Turns out
even gangsters have social media.
And?
- And Alex Grant is an art collector.
- [Mickey yelps]
Don't be so surprised.
Love of art doesn't discriminate.
No, it's just, uh, you're on my leg.
Oops!
Anyway, Grant is a huge fan of
this artist in Europe
who goes by the name of Tinto.
So much so that he has four
out of a series of five paintings
Tinto did on the stages of grief.
And he's dying to find the last one.
- Do we know where it is?
- [Lorna] No.
Nobody does.
It's called Acceptance,
and he made it for his girlfriend
after they had a huge fight
as a gesture of
acceptance.
What exactly does that do for us?
Nothing yet.
We're gonna need some help.
Studies have shown
that animal therapy is a crucial component
to helping veterans like myself
overcome PTSD or adjust to disabilities.
We take all major credit cards,
Venmo, PayPal, of course, cash.
I'll make a donation for you.
[upbeat music playing]
You guys mind? Find your own spot.
Isn't this a little pathetic, Sam?
Even for you?
My options are kind of limited
at the moment.
Did this doggie consent
to being used in your scam?
It's my cousin's.
I give her 10% of everything I make.
What do you two want anyway?
We're just here to remind you
of your outstanding debt.
- [Sam sighs]
- Twenty-five grand, plus interest.
Lawyers. They charge you
every time you take a breath.
As you can see, I'm in between gigs,
but I'm working on it.
Tell Mickey I'm working on it.
What would you say
if we were willing to wipe the bill clean?
I'd say, "What do I have to do?"
Right answer.
We need you to build a website.
But not just any website.
[suspenseful music playing]
[clicks]
[keys tapping]
[distant sniffling]
[Lorna sighs softly]
You know, when I was a kid,
I used to wait for the popcorn to pop
so I could watch a movie.
My mom used to say to me,
"A watched pot never boils."
I never knew what she meant.
It's gonna work.
You know, this isn't your fault, Izzy.
Relationships are so complicated.
I thought I was gonna be
married to Mickey forever.
[chuckles]
I just think I need
to be alone for a while.
I gotta figure out my own life before
I'm with somebody else.
[Lorna] Hey!
Maybe that's a good thing, you know?
It is the 21st century.
Women don't have to be in a relationship
to live a full life.
You never know what's gonna happen.
It's just
[computer chimes]
[both gasp]
[cell phone rings]
[Mickey] Talk to me.
[Lorna] It worked.
It's going down tomorrow night.
- Is everything ready?
- [Izzy] It will be.
All right. Good.
Thank you. Both of you. That's, um
Uh, look, I gotta call you back.
- Hey.
- Hey.
I, um I made you some chicken soup.
Oh, well, thank you.
Just what the doctor prescribed.
[Lisa] I've been worried about you.
- I feel like this is all my fault.
- No.
Why is everybody blaming themselves?
You have nothing to do with it, Lisa.
Well, do you know who did?
I have a pretty good idea.
But never mind that. I'm glad you came.
I'm sorry I waited so long.
I was actually here a few days ago,
but your ex-wife was here, so
- She was just, you know
- Yeah, well, I know.
I mean, of course, she was here.
She's your family, Mickey.
I'm glad you have people.
- You're gonna be okay, right?
- Good as new.
As soon as I get out of here.
I'm not good sitting still, you know?
Well, this soup
will hurry the process along.
I promise.
Ooh.
[Sam] Mr. Grant, I presume?
My name is Thomas Carrington.
My firm is representing Tinto
in this very, very special offer.
Just so you're aware,
we already have significant interest
from our previous guest,
and we're on a very, very tight schedule.
So we should get to it.
This way.
Mr. Grant, welcome.
Would you like some champagne?
That's a 2008 Krug Grande Cuvée.
- [dismissive] Yeah.
- [cork pops]
All the information needed
about the painting is in here.
If it's authentic, it's mine.
Here you are.
Follow me.
[Lorna] I have to say,
it is his best work to date.
The brushwork is incredible.
Well, you could have skipped the drama.
Our clients' wishes are our command.
Please allow me to hold your glass
while you do the honors.
What the fuck is this?
Alex Grant, you have been served.
Your fingerprints are all over this glass,
and the cameras caught everything.
You sure your boss wants to do this?
- This is entrapment.
- Entrapment only applies to the police.
You're gonna need that.
Directions to the courthouse.
- And you're gonna hear from my lawyer!
- We look forward to it.
[Mickey] Oh.
Park Place, where I own a hotel.
- It's your
- [laughs] Come on.
- How much is
- Oh, don't even bother.
- What?
- You don't have it.
Ooh.
I haven't won one single game
since I've been here.
- Because you're in so much pain.
- It's cool. I'll let you win the next one.
- You've always been my favorite daughter.
- [cell phone chimes]
Give me a second, okay?
So, it worked?
Oh yeah. Although I'm guessing his lawyer
will be filing a motion to quash any day.
[Mickey] That's tomorrow's problem.
That could be the least of your problems.
The guy's put you in a hospital.
[Mickey] Yeah, well, one thing at a time.
- Is Sam still with you?
- [Lorna] Yeah, he's right here.
All right. Put him on.
Always a pleasure doing business.
[Mickey] I appreciate your help.
I just need one more thing.
Take down the website.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on, Mick.
I don't think you're appreciating
the magnitude of the opportunity here.
Sam, take it down tonight,
or we don't write off the bill.
Fine!
Have it your way.
Thank you.
What was that all about?
Just defending my client.
You know what? I don't wanna know.
- What am I missing?
- [Maggie] Nothing.
I think your dad's feeling better.
He's more and more himself every day.
[sighs]
Come on. One more game.
I've got you this time.
- Are you sure?
- Yes.
I'm not leaving this hospital
until I win something.
- Hey.
- Hey.
- They're finally letting you out of jail?
- After I sign a million forms.
Well, here is one more.
As suspected, Grant's lawyer
filed a motion to quash the subpoena.
- I'm surprised it took as long as it did.
- You sure you're gonna be up for this?
The judge scheduled the hearing
for Monday.
Then it's a good thing
I'm getting out of here today.
Seriously, maybe we should just
file for a continuance.
I'm fine, Lorna.
It's time for me to get back to work.
Okay.
So, what's the plan?
Well
[energetic music playing]
[groans]
Got it?
[Mickey] I got it. Thanks.
- [Mickey groans]
- Easy.
You sure you're ready for this?
If you don't watch it,
you'll wind up back in there.
Um [sighs]
I gave in, Izzy.
I want you to hold them
so I don't overdo it.
[pensive music playing]
- You sure?
- If you're not comfortable, I understand.
No, it's not that. It's just
You sure you wanna trust me right now?
There's no one I trust more. Come on.
Got my keys?
[Mickey exhales]
Finally.
- What are you doing here?
- Come in.
Hey.
You didn't think
we'd let you stay here on your own?
We'll stay till you're back on your feet.
Looks like you're in good hands.
Yeah. You wanna stay?
I made lasagna. There's plenty.
Thanks, but I'll leave you guys to it.
Call me if you need something.
Thank you, Izzy.
[Izzy] Night.
- Can we eat now? I'm starving.
- [Mickey groans]
- Sorry, sorry.
- Easy.
You okay?
I hope you're hungry too.
Am I hallucinating still?
- Someone, pinch me.
- [in Spanish] Let's eat.
[Mickey] Oh!
[Hayley] Mm!
Oh, where did you find this?
[Hayley] Oh, I was looking
for extra pillows in the closet.
It was, like,
in this big box of old stuff.
It's my father's class ring
from law school.
[Hayley] You should wear it.
Nah, it's, uh, not really my style, is it?
I don't know. I think it's super dope.
Like, old-school. Literally.
Okay. Come on, people. I actually cooked.
Oh, it smells delicious.
[Hayley] Do you think
it could use even more cheese?
Honestly.
You think? Adding cheese
to the cheese on the lasagna?
- So much more cheese.
- No, I just love the Parmesan.
[upbeat music playing]
Mr. Zimmer, you filed a motion
to quash the subpoena
of Mr. Grant in this matter.
It's your hearing.
[Lorna] What's the plan?
Well, Grant's gonna have some heavy hitter
charging a thousand dollars an hour.
First thing he'll try to do is
close the hearing.
Under these circumstances,
we feel this hearing
would more properly be held in chambers.
I don't see why.
The presumption is that court proceedings
are always public,
especially since the victim,
Mitchell Bondurant,
was a prominent public figure.
I'd love to know what it is
Mr. Grant feels he has to hide.
Your Honor,
counsel is obviously trying to imply
that my client had some involvement
in this tragedy,
which is emphatically untrue.
Mr. Grant is a public figure
in his own right.
He has a right to privacy
So, what,
your client deserves special treatment
because he's a big shot?
If your client has nothing to do
with this matter, Mr. Zimmer,
then he should be happy
to make that clear in the light of day.
[upbeat music continues]
Shall we?
We need this hearing to be very public.
Reach out to my guys at the Times.
Tell them to bring as many of
their buddies as they can.
Say we'll give them an exclusive.
[cameras clicking]
Mr. Zimmer.
Yes. Uh, Your Honor,
Alex Grant is a respected member
of the Los Angeles business community.
He had nothing to do with this crime
and has no relevant testimony
to provide about it.
It's clear that Mr. Haller's planning
on going on a fishing expedition
to distract from what I'm sure
is a very strong case.
- Objection, Your Honor.
- Sustained.
Mr. Zimmer, you're going to need
a little bit more meat on that bone.
Your Honor, if I may be heard,
I would just add
that the People join Mr. Zimmer
in this motion.
- Of course you do.
- Watch it, Mr. Haller.
There is nothing counsel can achieve here.
His only goal is to muddy the waters.
Apologies, Your Honor,
but if the court would indulge me
for just five minutes,
I can demonstrate that this witness
has testimony to offer,
which is highly relevant
to the matter at hand.
Call your witness, Mr. Haller.
But I'm watching the clock.
This whole thing depends on putting
Grant's reputation on the line.
He needs to feel like
the whole city is watching.
Uh, Mr. Grant, you're a contractor.
Is that correct?
Yes.
Anyone driving through Los Angeles
has seen your name
on countless construction cranes
and trailers.
You're quite successful.
I do okay.
The recent commercial real estate boom
has been very good for your business?
- Your Honor
- Move it along, Mr. Haller.
To really make him sweat,
we need to go after his biggest project.
Is it true that you're in the running
to potentially build the Athletes' Village
for the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028?
Well, I don't like to get ahead of myself,
but yes, we've made it
to the final round of bidding.
[Mickey] Good luck to you.
But that's not a project
you were partnering
with the victim in this case,
Mitchell Bondurant?
No, it is not.
But you did have a long-standing
business relationship with Mr. Bondurant?
He has engaged my firm
on a number of projects over the years.
In fact, you built over a dozen properties
for Mr. Bondurant.
Commercial, residential
Objection! Many people worked
with Mitchell Bondurant.
I don't know what this has to do
with the case.
If you give me a moment, Your Honor,
I can demonstrate the relevance.
Now, Mr. Grant, this is an email
that Mitchell Bondurant sent to you
on January 10th of this year.
Would you mind reading
the highlighted portion?
"If we cannot come
to an agreement on terms,
I will have no choice
but to pursue this matter
through the appropriate legal channels."
"This includes reporting it
to our lenders,
which, as fiduciaries,
are required under federal law to rep
to report any suspicious activity."
Would you explain to the court
what suspicious activity
Mr. Bondurant was alluding to?
[cameras clicking]
Once you get him to read the email,
the judge will make him testify,
and she'll deny the motion.
Hopefully, but it's possible Grant
will plead the fifth rather than risk it.
- And what if he does?
- Then we're screwed.
This guy's our straw man.
Without him, we'll lose.
We've got no one else to blame this on.
We can't lose him before the trial starts.
I need to get him in front of a jury.
[suspenseful music playing]
Would you like me
to repeat the question, Mr. Grant?
[cameras clicking]
Your Honor, I'd like to request a recess
so that I may confer with my client.
Make it brief, Mr. Zimmer.
You're gambling this entire case
on Alex Grant not taking the Fifth?
Are you insane?
[indistinct shouting]
Stop it! Just stop.
It's like going all in
with a pair of twos.
Sometimes, Lorna, a pair of twos wins.
Sometimes, a pair of twos loses
to, like, a hundred other hands.
This guy wants that Olympics job, Lorna.
Pleading the Fifth in a pretrial hearing
will raise a thousand questions.
What is he hiding?
What could be so incriminating
that he would refuse to testify at a trial
that he says has nothing to do with him?
That's why we need all the press.
I mean, that's one reason.
And the other reason?
[in Spanish] The walls have ears.
Sometimes, I think
[in Spanish]you are sick in the head.
Hmm.
- [indistinct chatter]
- [cameras clicking]
Mr. Zimmer, have you and your client
conferred sufficiently enough?
[clears throat] Yes.
Your Honor, against the advice of counsel,
Mr. Grant has decided
to withdraw his motion.
Now, while he had
nothing to do with Mr. Bondurant's death,
he is now aware that
that will be made abundantly clear
when Mr. Haller
asks him questions at trial.
We apologize for wasting the court's time.
I'll be sure to relay that
to the other members of my bowling team.
Very well. We're adjourned.
I'm confused. Is that good for us?
Very.
Mr. Haller, Miss Freemann My chambers.
Congratulations, Mr. Haller.
You caught the car.
Uh, excuse me, Your Honor?
You know, the dog who actually catches
the car he's been chasing?
What is he gonna do with it?
[judge] Court appreciates your help,
Miss Freemann.
My point, Mr. Haller, is that
while one email may have been enough
to goad Mr. Grant into testifying,
it is not enough to prove
he is relevant to this case.
And before Miss Freemann
sucks any more air out of the room,
let me just say that I will be inclined
to agree with her objections
to this witness at trial
unless you connect the dots
more thoroughly.
"More thoroughly"?
Find something else
to suggest Alex Grant's involvement.
That is, if you want
to use this defense at trial. Understood?
Yes, Your Honor.
There's a story the jury deserves to hear.
- You have my word.
- Let's hope it's a compelling one.
Now, if there's nothing else
Thank you, Your Honor.
Your Honor.
- Hey.
- How'd it go?
We won the battle.
If I can't come up with something else,
we might lose the war.
Yeah? Well, maybe this will help.
You were right. There is a connection
between Henry Dahl and Alex Grant.
What did you find?
You know Grant has
all those shell companies?
One of them is an S Corp named PanMedia.
Mainly invested in entertainment projects.
And this guy is the president
of that company. David Webber.
Who's David Webber?
He's the executive producer
of Henry Dahl's last podcast.
Something called "Skid Row-mance?"
Skid Jesus. Great work, Cisco.
So, now what?
[Mickey] Now we use it. Come on.
Hey, Izzy?
[Izzy] Here's the cash Ray gave me.
I wore rubber gloves like you said.
Still don't get why though.
If I'm right, Henry Dahl's fingerprints
are all over this cash,
which proves he paid Ray
to steal that contract.
Can Cisco run the prints?
I don't think it'll come to that.
So you know, this money is still yours.
I don't want it.
I'm not giving it back to Henry.
You did nothing wrong, Izzy.
You shouldn't have to pay
for someone else's mistake.
[cell phone chimes]
[pensive music playing]
[Izzy] You got water?
[Mickey groans]
[sighs]
Hey. Is there news about the case?
I feel like I've been invited
to the principal's office.
[Mickey] That's one way
of looking at it, Henry.
Tell me. How much did Alex Grant pay you
to have me beaten up in my garage?
What?
Mickey, I don't know Alex Grant.
I had absolutely nothing to do with that.
- Are you kidding me?
- No, he wouldn't.
You paid my driver's girlfriend two grand
for five minutes in my car.
And guess what, Henry?
I've got your fingerprints
on the cash to prove it.
[sighs] Oh fuck.
Okay, I took the contract. I'll admit it.
But it was so that I could move forward
with this very big deal
that is good for all of us.
You motherfucker.
But I had absolutely nothing to do with
you getting beat up. Swear to God.
Okay, I don't do violence.
Yeah, maybe not.
Or maybe you don't know you do.
Maybe you don't know
you're being played like a fiddle.
Who's David Webber?
- One of my investors.
- From what I hear, your biggest investor.
- Fine. What does he have to do with this?
- Everything.
I bet it was Webber
who gave you the two grand
to pay Ray to steal the contract,
wasn't it?
In fact, I bet he was the guy
who gave you the 200 grand
to bail Lisa out of jail.
In exchange, what?
You feed him information about the case.
Is this true?
- Henry!
- [Henry scoffs]
Is this true?
Lisa, $200,000 is a lot of money.
I was trying to help you.
It's not a big deal.
- It's not like anybody got hurt.
- [Mickey] Really?
Well, news flash, Henry.
David Webber works for Alex Grant.
- What?
- Yeah, that means so do you.
This isn't about some podcast.
It's about making sure Lisa takes the fall
for Mitchell Bondurant's murder.
These guys have been
setting her up the whole time.
They've been using you to do it.
- I swear. I didn't know anything about
- Oh, please.
Either way, your deal with them is over.
You work for me now.
You're gonna help us
turn the tables on Alex Grant.
- How?
- Leave that to me.
Just know that when I call you,
I expect you to answer.
Just get the fuck outta here.
[scoffs]
I can't believe this.
[Mickey sighs softly]
You were right about him.
I'm sorry.
I can see the liars coming
from a mile away.
I should go.
We still have a lot of work to do.
Hayley went to bed?
Yeah. She has that paper due on Monday,
so she wanted to get up early
and get started on it.
[Mickey] Wow. This
- This brings back memories, huh?
- [Maggie chuckles]
Good to know some things never change.
