Donaldson: Previously on "Top Shot" Go! [ gunshots .]
Chris Tilley just wiping out targets.
The Blue Team uses their speed-shooting skills to defeat the Red Team.
It's do or die time.
Donaldson: That's it! Blue Team wins! Whoo-hoo-hoo! George: I feel embarrassed.
Certain individuals on the team suck at life.
Donaldson: Jamie finds out just where he stands.
George: Jamie, I don't know your background in the Navy.
I don't even know what you do there.
I don't think that you're a strong competitor compared to these dudes.
Oh, I am pissed at this whole scenario.
I feel like the only reason I'm going to the elimination challenge is 'cause George, Chris, and Joe have gotten pretty tight together.
And I'm not really tight with anybody.
Donaldson: And then Jamie soundly beats Eric.
Now Jamie's picking up the pace.
I'm seeing targets explode.
Jamie, congratulations.
Join your team.
Jamie: I kind of feel like I'm rejoining a team that doesn't want me there.
I know I'm walking back into the Red Team with a target still on my back.
Donaldson: There are shots that changed history Feats of legendary skill and extreme precision.
Now 16 of today's best marksmen have been chosen.
They come from all over the country and from all walks of life.
Amateurs and professionals, military, recreation, and exhibition shooters.
Each shows the timeless skills of a true marksman Not just with one weapon, with any weapon.
They will compete in a series of challenges until only one remains, earning the $100,000 prize and the title of "Top Shot.
" Jamie: Coming back to the house after elimination was a little awkward.
I was still kind of pissed off about going to elimination.
I think that Eric's a far superior shooter than Jamie.
With Jamie, I don't even know what the hell you do.
"you're in the Navy.
What do you do?" And he's like, "I'm in the Navy.
" I'm like, "well, that being said, You haven't shot on anything.
" It's not necessarily that I hate Jamie as a person.
I just think he's shady.
I mean, I asked him what he does.
He won't tell me what his career field is in the Navy.
Nobody knows what he does? No.
Maybe he's an assassin.
Could be.
Some kind of secret stuff.
Yeah, dude.
Whatever, dude.
"what do you do, bro? Just be honest with me.
" You know, I asked him.
He's like, "I'm in the Navy.
" "all right, dude, what do you do in the Navy? Just tell me, you know?" And he's never been up front and honest with me, anything I ever ask him, and there's always some shady undertone to his crap, and I'm sick of it.
I don't understand what's going on.
I don't know what the deal is.
I don't know what I did to piss somebody off, but Jay: Jamie and I are talking on the deck, and as soon as I got the opportunity, I thought I should comfort him, you know, because I was in the same situation.
Stop and think about this.
It's competition.
Now what? Yeah.
Now you got to deal with these people as people.
Yeah.
What was I gonna do, not talk to them, ignore them? That's gonna make my stay here even worse.
Feeling like I'm the outcast sucks, you know.
You want to feel like you're, you know, But at the same time, we're in the top 10 now, and so, I'm pretty sure it's only gonna get more dicey and cutthroat around here.

Welcome to practice.
Congratulations, all of you, for making it to the top 10.
With every elimination, you guys all get one step closer to the $100,000 and the title of Top Shot.
Whoever ultimately wins this thing is gonna have to demonstrate they've got skills with a wide range of weapons from throughout history.
Next up, a primitive weapon unique to the natives of North America The tomahawk.
The native-American tomahawk was a multipurpose tool used for hunting, chopping wood, or as a weapon that could be wielded by hand or thrown at an enemy.
Legend has it that when two warring tribes decided to make peace, they would literally bury a tomahawk, giving rise to the expression "bury the hatchet.
" Any of you fellas been slinging tomahawks in your backyard lately? Really? Daryl, Chris.
George is kind of iffy.
You guys throw tomahawks? A little bit.
Well, we'll see how it works out.
We've invited primitive-weapons expert Jack Dagger to help you learn the art of throwing a tomahawk.
A former world-champion tomahawk thrower himself, Jack is gonna teach you the skills you need to master this weapon.
Red Team, you're up first.
Blue Team, you guys can head back to the house.

Now I want you to hold this like you're shaking hands with it.
The release of the tomahawk is the most important part of the throw.
It's almost like you're trying to drive a nail that's in a wall across the room.
So you wind up, and you bring the tomahawk forward.
Picture in your mind's eye that there is a nail, and you snap your wrist forward.
Keep stretching.
Lock up.
Stretch forward.
Good.
Perfect.
The power comes from your hips, the transition of your body weight.
You don't have to be a big, strong guy.
You don't have to work for it.
It comes through good technique, not strength.
You want control.
It's all about surgery, not butchery.
Perfect.
Couldn't be more perfect.
That's so weird.
[bleep.]

Throwing a tomahawk is actually a lot harder than what it looks.
It looks like it'd be easy, you know what I mean? You just pick it up and throw it.
But everything has to be the same every single time you throw a tomahawk.
Otherwise it's not getting the right spin, the right rotation.
You're not gonna hit your target.
George looked like he was gonna be hopeless.
The bigger the guy, they feel like they got to muscle the tomahawk into the target.
George is huge.
He looks like the Hulk.
But he very quickly made the adjustments and then became their strongest thrower.
Good.
That's it.
Snap it forward.
Chris he's not getting it.
Right over the top.
I want you to reach higher.
George: Chris is an outdoors-man.
He throws to kill.
He's hunted for so long his whole life, throwing hatchets to kill hogs and kill other things, that throwing at targets is a completely different ballgame.
Snap.
He's got a lot of work to do before the challenge tomorrow.

You guys are all prepared.
George, I think right now you're probably the power hitter here.
Yeah, baby.

how do you feel? I feel good.

Joe: When it comes to the competition tomorrow, throwing the tomahawk, it sucks 'cause we can really lose a good shooter if we do lose.
We could lose a real good shooter just 'cause he can't throw a tomahawk.
It's kind of up in the air for everybody, I think.

Daryl looking like a ringer so far.
Dagger: Daryl was the obvious strong thrower right out from the get-go.
He had some previous experience throwing a tomahawk, and you could really tell.
Stretch forward.
Low.
I was really surprised Ashley, who looks the most like a lumberjack, didn't do as well.
He couldn't quite get the concept of driving a nail into the wall by snapping the wrist forward.
Good.
Good, good.
Good, good.
Daryl: Other than myself, I think Jay is probably the best thrower on the Blue Team.
He has kind of an unconventional style, but he's a natural athlete.
He got up there, he adjusted for the tomahawk, and he was sticking his throws.
Drive it through the target.
Careful.
Well, Chris Tilley's an exceptional marksman in his specialty, but he's not so great at throwing tomahawks.
Rocking motion.
Is that how I'm rocking, like this? Yep.
That's right.
He doesn't quite have the body motion down for it.
Yeah.
His timing is a little bit off, and I can tell that he's very unsure with the weapon.
I'm a little worried about his consistency when it comes to tomorrow's challenge.
Just to kind of recap, Daryl is the obvious strong thrower on this time.
He's by far the best.
He's a ringer.
But don't let that go to your head.
Make sure you hunker Dagger: After seeing the Blue Team practice, collectively I think they have a leg up here.
It's theirs to lose.
But you're all doing really well.

: Leaving practice today, we only had like 10 minutes apiece, if that, you know? And that's a short amount of time to try to learn a weapon like this.
Perfect.
I found a 2 1/2-pound weight.
All right.
So, this is gonna be my front edge right here.
Nice, dude.
Nice.
I would throw for the one full rotation, and I could watch the impact of the weight To know if it hit at a 45-degree angle that it was a dead-center hit.
The Red Team's strong right now, and I think, you know, we're all confident that we want the rest of our team to remain in this competition, so there's a few guys on the Blue Team that we would like to send home.
George: I think we've come a long way from the practice session, But by no means am I confident that we're better than the blue team on skill with a hatchet.
Head on over, guys.
Daryl: We were walking up to the challenge, and we see a giant grid of wooden targets, and we all already start gaming what the challenge is gonna be.
We know it's gonna be a kind of a tic-tac-toe.
Welcome, gentlemen, to the team challenge.
Hopefully, all of you had a good practice with the tomahawk, because now you'll be put to the test.
You'll be throwing tomahawks from a platform at a grid of 36 squares The object to this challenge is to hit four squares in a line with the tomahawk.
You can do it horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
Teams will alternate turns.
As soon as the tomahawk sticks in a square, it will immediately be replaced With either a red or a blue marker.
You need to come up with a strategy, because obviously, the opposing team can block you.
But most importantly, you got to show some skill.
First team to link four targets in a row wins.
The losing team headed to the nomination range.
Okay, both teams, take a few minutes, strategize, determine your throwing order, then we'll go.
So, what's the game plan? Stick to rows 2 As best as we can.
The Red Team's strategy is first and foremost, we're trying to avoid the top row and the bottom row, 'cause those are gonna be the hardest blocks for us to stick.
Well, coach Either way, I mean, we've got As it happens we'll call shots.
We can call shots, because, you know, we don't know what they're gonna do.
Start at that target.
Going up.
1, 2, 3.
I wouldn't start on that.
I'd start on the lower ones first, just in case if they block us.
I was telling them, "hey, we need to start off "with the easy target first, you know, "something that we know we can get, And then we'll work our way up from there.
" And that was something that we kind of argued about a little bit.
Pretty much I was the only one on the Blue Team that said, "no, no, that's too aggressive.
Don't go for the hard target.
Let's start easy.
" Everyone else was like, "no, no, let's go ahead "and go right off the bat and go, you know, with one of the harder targets.
" All right.
Time's up.
Red Team, bring it on in.
Coming up on "Top Shot" It's really all on my shoulders.
We got one dot to win it or one dot to lose it.
Got to have a hit here.
This is as nervous as I've ever been.
All right! This team challenge is all about throwing a tomahawk.
The first team to hit four targets in a line wins.
We will alternate turns until we have a winner.
Blue Team, you guys won the coin toss, so you'll be throwing first.

Daryl first on the course for the Blue Team.
[ applause .]
Choosing his tomahawk.
Oh! Daryl hits but does not stick.
Daryl: The first thing I thought when I missed my shot was "crap.
I opened the door for the red team to take the initiative.
" Donaldson: Red Team sending Chris Reed to the platform.
Chris getting all the way to the front edge of the platform.
Very close, of course, and he sticks it for the Red Team.
Yeah! Red Team first on the board.
Yep.
Blue Team, who's up? Ashley.
Stepping up to the platform.
Ashley: I shoot guns and rifles, pistols.
I don't throw tomahawks.
Based on the fact that I've only thrown a tomahawk a total of probably 15 times in practice, it's very nerve-racking for me.
Donaldson: Oh! Excellent.
Very methodical with his form, and sticks it for the Blue Team.
Red Team, you're up.
Who's it gonna be? Joe.
Donaldson: Blue Team busy strategizing over here.
Joe doesn't get it to stick.
Blue Team has an opportunity to take a lead here.
Kyle's up next.
Kyle: You know, at this point in the challenge, it's really all on my shoulders.
I also know in the back of my head that, you know, there's been a lot of challenges that I haven't performed very well at.
Donaldson: There it is! Blue Team.
I throw, and I land my target.
Felt great.
Donaldson: Two in a row, two in a line.
Where am I going? Yes.
Yeah.
One easy throw, man.
Donaldson: Oh! There it is.
You shall not pass! George with the block for the Red Team.
Now we got ourselves a competition.
Because the Red Team had a diagonal connection going on, we wanted to go ahead and block that connection.
Donaldson: Yes.
Jay.
Next for the Blue Team.
Shuts the Red Team's opportunity for four in a row down.
Ashley: They're probably gonna go for the easy shot, which is in between our two blue.
Donaldson: So far both teams only have one miss each.
Chris R.
: Take your time, Jamie.
Donaldson: Jamie sticks it for the Red Team.
Gets a block on the Blue Team.
Chris T.
: Right before I walked up, they changed the strategy on what I was going to do.
They wanted me to do a defensive shot on a bottom target.
Easy money, Chris.
Easy money.
Easy money.
Donaldson: Whoa.
Chris Tilley sticks one in the bottom row.
Don't know if it's exactly what he was aiming at, but it's certainly gonna count.
Blue Team back on the board.
Dagger: Chris is a little sloppy on his windup.
He doesn't seem to have a concept of what his body's doing from here down, just from here up.
And so he actually misses one of his targets and drops the hawk down low.
Yeah! Oh! Oh! Red Team playing a little offense.
We have to.
At this point, the Blue Team is on the defense, because the Red Team has two different ways they can go.
The decision was made to block them high, their vertical stack.
Donaldson: Daryl back on the court.
After having missed my first shot, I really needed to connect with my second one.
Yeah! Daryl gets the block for the Blue Team.
Red had three in a row, but that just got shut down.
Chris Reed.
[ applause .]
Chris Reed sticks one for the Red Team.
Chris throws, hits his target.
They have three in a row.
And we all saw the danger at the same time.
They could go for four on either end of their row.
We either have to block left or we have to block right.
They can go either way at this point.
However, if I block left, it also sets the Blue Team up diagonally to where if the red misses, all we have to do is hit one right there and we end up winning diagonally.
Donaldson: Gonna have to block the Red Team.
The question is, which side are they gonna do it on? Yeah! Ashley with the block for the Blue Team.
Ashley performed contrary to my expectations.
He stepped up, didn't drop it there.
He was perfect in every way.
Send it in.
Brian: So, it actually gets to the point where the Blue Team has one space for a win.
We've got one space for a win.
We can either block the blue team, or we can go for the win.
We talked and "go big or go home.
Joe, you're the guy.
" Joe's got to go do it.
Donaldson: On the grid for the Red Team with an opportunity to win this whole thing.
Joe, missing on his first throw.
Got to have a hit here.
Joe: If you were gonna tell me that the most nervous shot of my life would be with a tomahawk at this distance, I would have laughed.
But walking into this, this is as nervous as I've ever been.
All the archery tournaments and all the shooting competitions I've ever been in, It just doesn't compare to this.
Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Donaldson: Sticks it for the Red Team.
Red Team is victorious.
Whoo! By far, the most intense challenge that we've had so far.
Chris t: I think the biggest turning point in that challenge was just that first throw from our team.
Donaldson: Oh! Being first in this challenge, you should have never had to go on the defensive.
When Joe went up there and missed Red Team's second throw, that really put us back where we should have been.
Donaldson: There it is.
Oh! Jay: And then it just kind of went back and forth, Blue Team, Red Team.
Yeah! [ applause .]
Donaldson: Whoa.
Chris Tilley missed the square that he was supposed to hit, which was a blocking square.
It's a huge turning point.
Yeah! Yeah! Yeah.
Yeah! George: Ashley's up there, stone-cold sticks it.
So now it's that scenario.
We've got one dot to win it or one dot to lose it.
They can connect one more on diagonal.
So it's our world-series moment.
There's a full count, bottom of the ninth.
We needed this tomahawk throw to win the game.
Our best hitter could have been anybody, but it was Joe.
Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! It was like oh, indescribable feeling.
Donaldson: Red Team is victorious.
George: Out of everything we've shot here, you told me the tomahawk'd be the most intense thing you did, I'd be like, "yeah, dude, whatever, bro," but it was.
Red Team, congratulations to you guys.
You are safe for now.
You can head back to the house.
Daryl: I was angry after the challenge because I knew that we only needed one more throw to win.
Whether it was my throw or whether it was Chris Tilley's throw, if we had either one of those throws back, we would haze won that competition.
And so, of course I don't want to be the reason my team loses.
Blue Team, I really don't have much to say.
You guys performed well, came up short.
That's all there is to it.
You now know what you have to decide.
So I'll see you in a few hours at the nomination range.

: We especially wanted to win this challenge, 'cause this would put us for the first time in the lead As far as the teams go.
And, you know, the longer and longer you get to know these guys, the harder and harder it is To send someone home, so you don't want to be put in that position.
Donaldson: Coming up on "Top Shot" Joe: I can't see Daryl escaping this one.
He can't.
Chris didn't hit the blocking target.
Jay: I agree.
I think the strategy was too aggressive.
It seems like some of the guys are going under the radar.
We had a great opportunity, and we blew it right there.
Daryl: I'll start.
I think we did well today, but there's only two reasons why we lost.
One is cause I missed my first shot, and, in my opinion, Chris didn't hit the blocking target.
Jay: I agree.
I'm definitely taking responsibility on it, but I think the strategy was too aggressive.
For our strategy to work how it was, we had to go one for one every throw.
Chris T.
: I think everyone on our team but me thinks that the strategy was perfect.
I thought the strategy was sound.
We discussed it.
Chris T.
: Daryl missed the hardest target that was actually hit today.
When you miss that first shot, you pretty much had to be on the defensive end Every throw from then on.
It should have never been like that.
We should have chose one of the easier targets and worked around that.
We had the advantage just by going first, And we threw that right out the window when we went for a hard target and missed it.
If either one of us had hit, we would have won.
Ashley: Game over, yeah.
'cause we only needed one more throw.
Oh, yeah.
Sure.
I don't think there's anything wrong with the Blue Team's strategy.
I think we've been right on.
But it's just like a football playbook.
You can have the best plays in the world, but if you can't execute them, then they're not gonna be successful anyway.
Joe: I can't see Daryl escaping this one.
He can't.
He can't escape this.
He's got to go.
I'm gonna go up to him like, "so, is it still performance-based or what?" [ laughs .]
Brian: Blue Team's status is very somber.
I don't think they're quite the well-oiled machine that they were a couple competitors ago.
Or they could say that Chris Tilley missed his actual shot today.
I mean, that was just a two-foot miss that just happened to stick.
That'd be mind-blowing if it's Daryl and Chris in the [bleep.]
elimination.
I don't see that going down at all.
I predict Kyle and Daryl.
Brian: I know they're going off performance-base off of each individual competition, But you got to get rid of Kyle.
I don't know how else they can do it.
I would think Daryl and Tilley.
Yeah.
Brian: Personally, I'd be putting Kyle and Jay up against each other, but it's not my Blue Team.
I hate going to nomination range.
It makes me nervous.
It makes me sick to my stomach.
I don't like the thought of myself by chance going to the elimination challenge, so nomination range is not a fun place to go.
Blue Team, welcome to the nomination range.
Each one of you will take turns shooting the target of the person you want to nominate For the elimination challenge.

Ashley, you'll vote first.
Ashley: The reason that I shot Daryl's target is he missed his initial throw, so it was very difficult for us to ever get back in an offensive position.
Kyle, you're up.
[ exhales sharply .]
Two votes for Daryl.
Chris Tilley, your turn to vote.
Chris T.
: We had a great opportunity of being able to go first to take it to the Red Team, and we blew it right there.
Daryl, that's three votes for you.
You will be in tomorrow's elimination challenge.
Jay, come on up.
Three votes Daryl, one vote Chris.
Daryl, now you can come up and vote.
Daryl: The only glitches we had were those two throws, one by myself, and one by Chris Tilley.
Simple.
Chris Tilley and I need to go to elimination.
Daryl and Chris, you two guys will be facing off in the elimination challenge.

: To throw me under the bus making a mistake with a tomahawk is one thing that just doesn't make any sense to me.
Chris R.
: Blue Team came back in from the nomination range, and they said that it was Daryl and Chris Tilley.
I think that was a bad route for them to go.
George: Cumulative, Chris and Daryl busted more [bleep.]
than anyone on that team besides you.
Ashley: Yeah.
Dude, Blue Team they're sending Daryl and Chris, which is like 70% of their team right now.
He misses one hatchet, and Tilley hits one, but wrong spot.
Now one of you guys got to go, your top performers.
That's a good point.
I just don't get it.
George: Kyle and Jay are the weakest links, in my opinion.
Chris is a strong competitor.
He's shot more targets than Kyle and Jay put together.
Daryl had two back-to-back bad competitions, so that's an understandable choice, but Chris Tilley, throwing him in there again stupid.
Donaldson: Coming up on "Top Shot" Now you're gonna compete with another primitive weapon The blowgun.
Daryl: I like that.
I'm feeling pretty confident with a blowgun.
Now we're talking.
I'm pretty stoked.
I got this.
Daryl and Chris, welcome to practice for the elimination challenge.
Now you're gonna compete with another primitive weapon, one that requires you to have a good, strong set of lungs The blowgun.
Blowgun has been used for centuries by indigenous peoples around the world to hunt small game.
Today, modern blowguns are part of a growing sport using primitive weapons.
The latest versions are made from aluminum and can fire 4- to 6-inch darts.
And the longer the tube, the better the accuracy and velocity.
Primitive-weapons expert Jack Dagger is highly skilled with the blowgun and is back to help you prepare for the elimination challenge.
We've set up multiple targets Chris will go first.
Daryl will practice later.

How you doing, Jack? Hey, Chris.
How are you? Good to see you again.
Yes, sir.
All right, have you ever fired a blowgun? I have not.
You haven't? No, sir.
I don't know anything about it.
You point it, you blow air through it, and you shoot a dart at a target.
[ laughs .]
Let's talk about aiming for a moment.
Okay.
Dagger: The way you aim a blowgun, unlike when you're shooting a firearm, you keep both eyes open and use what's called parallax vision.
Take your left hand and take your index finger and point it towards any one of those bull's-eyes.
Okay.
Look at your fingernail on your finger, and now look at the bull's-eye.
You should see two fingers in your peripheral, near vision, right? That's called parallax vision.
Dagger: So when you're holding the blowgun, keep both eyes open, Look at the bull's-eye, and now you see two blowgun barrels.
You center your target directly between those two, and that eliminates the left-to-right variable.
Now you just have to worry about elevation and windage.
Give it a whirl.
Let's take a shot, and then I'll help you dial in your accuracy.
All right.
Now you're getting up on your vertical alignment.
Let's give it another whirl.
Bingo.
Now you're getting it.
Chris T.
: It is kind of night-and-day difference.
The ghost image that you see with the pistol you learn to ignore it, and with the blowgun, you need to make sure you see that ghost image so you can actually reference your point of aim even better.
Oh [bleep.]
I just saw gobs of spit coming out of that barrel.
Yeah.
Chris practiced first, and he was a little slow to pick up on it.
I was hoping we could dial in his accuracy a lot more quickly.
Didn't work out that way.
[bleep.]
that was pretty weak.
Ah.
Chris T.
: As I was practicing, my biggest struggle was my aim was pretty much just guessing it.
There it is.
Feel that difference? Yeah.
Chris shows moments of greatness.
Now we're talking.
Occasionally it all comes together and he shoots really straight, but he's not very consistent.
Looks like you're starting to feel a little bit more comfortable with this.
I spoke too soon.
Money shot.
Money, baby.
I was real happy with how I ended up with the blowgun.
Perfect.
Once I got the sighting down, I was able to actually aim for a spot, and more times than not, I was able to hit it.
Perfect.
Dude, nicely done.
I had good instruction, and I think I can go out and win a good elimination challenge here.
Hey, Daryl, how are you? Good.
Quick question have you ever shot a blowgun before? Probably about 10 years ago.
All right.
Go ahead and pick up the blowgun.
Get a really good seal.
Take a nice, deep breath.
Stopper that breath with your tongue on the roof of your mouth, and when you're ready, blow and keep good.
That was a very, very high-velocity dart.
Good.
Anything in the black is good.
Daryl: I think that I'm a kind of instinctive shooter.
When you're shooting with primitive weapons, you have to go off of instinct and feel, And I think that may be where I have an edge.
Perfect.
That one looks like it might be in the red.
Looks like you won't be going hungry.
[ chuckles .]
It took me probably but eventually it started to become a lot more natural for me, and I could load faster and blow faster.
Nice.
Nice! Good.
Drilled that puppy.
I like that.
Daryl this guy is a blowgun phenomenon.
Robin Hood that cone.
You pretty much did it.
Whoo! Within a very short period of time, the guy was nail driving.
Good.
Nice.

Chris is a specialist in his field, whereas I think I'm more of a Jack of all trades.

Any of the primitive weapons that's gonna be his specialty.
We know that.
But one of my skills is to be able to perform under that clutch pressure.
Daryl: Chris Tilley is a world-class pistol shooter.
He competes in competitions all the time at the world level, the international level.
If Chris Tilley's gonna be put out of this competition, a primitive weapon system is the place to do it.
I think that my experience of doing the competition and dealing with the stress I think that'll help me pull through.
Daryl: I'm 44 years old.
It's in my blood to be a shooter.
I was born shooting, raised shooting, trained to shoot professionally.
I believe Chris Tilley's gonna go home, and I think I'll have an extra $2,000 in my pocket.

I was like, you know, "these big balloons, no big deal.
"you know, I can hit all these things.
I can be faster than Daryl.

Here's how it's gonna work.
we've placed matching sets of 32 clear balloons.
Inside each one of those balloons is another smaller balloon.
The shooter that hits the most clear balloons without breaking any of the inside balloons wins.
This is a head-to-head challenge, and you will have two minutes.
Chris, you're shooting at the clear balloons with the orange ones inside.
Daryl, you're obviously going for the ones with the yellow ones inside, okay? All right.

Next up, a primitive weapon unique to the natives of North America The tomahawk.
The native-American tomahawk was a multipurpose tool used for hunting, chopping wood, or as a weapon that could be wielded by hand or thrown at an enemy.
Legend has it that when two warring tribes decided to make peace, they would literally bury a tomahawk, giving rise to the expression "bury the hatchet.
" Any of you fellas been slinging tomahawks in your backyard lately? Really? Daryl, Chris.
George is kind of iffy.
You guys throw tomahawks? A little bit.
Well, we'll see how it works out.

The bigger the guy, they feel like they got to muscle the tomahawk into the target.
George is huge.
He looks like the Hulk.
But he very quickly made the adjustments and then became their strongest thrower.

George: I think we've come a long way from the practice session, But by no means am I confident that we're better than the blue team on skill with a hatchet.

Daryl: We were walking up to the challenge, and we see a giant grid of wooden targets, and we all already start gaming what the challenge is gonna be.
We know it's gonna be a kind of a tic-tac-toe.
Welcome, gentlemen, to the team challenge.
Hopefully, all of you had a good practice with the tomahawk, because now you'll be put to the test.
You'll be throwing tomahawks from a platform at a grid of 36 squares The object to this challenge is to hit four squares in a line with the tomahawk.
You can do it horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
Teams will alternate turns.
As soon as the tomahawk sticks in a square, it will immediately be replaced With either a red or a blue marker.
You need to come up with a strategy, because obviously, the opposing team can block you.
But most importantly, you got to show some skill.
First team to link four targets in a row wins.
The losing team headed to the nomination range.
Okay, both teams, take a few minutes, strategize, determine your throwing order, then we'll go.
So, what's the game plan? Stick to rows 2 As best as we can.
The Red Team's strategy is first and foremost, we're trying to avoid the top row and the bottom row, 'cause those are gonna be the hardest blocks for us to stick.
Well, coach Either way, I mean, we've got As it happens we'll call shots.
We can call shots, because, you know, we don't know what they're gonna do.
Start at that target.
Going up.
1, 2, 3.
I wouldn't start on that.
I'd start on the lower ones first, just in case if they block us.
I was telling them, "hey, we need to start off "with the easy target first, you know, "something that we know we can get, And then we'll work our way up from there.
" And that was something that we kind of argued about a little bit.
Pretty much I was the only one on the Blue Team that said, "no, no, that's too aggressive.
Don't go for the hard target.
Let's start easy.
" Everyone else was like, "no, no, let's go ahead "and go right off the bat and go, you know, with one of the harder targets.
" All right.

Based on the fact that I've only thrown a tomahawk a total of probably 15 times in practice, it's very nerve-racking for me.

Very methodical with his form, and sticks it for the Blue Team.
Red Team, you're up.
Who's it gonna be? Joe.
Donaldson: Blue Team busy strategizing over here.
Joe doesn't get it to stick.
Blue Team has an opportunity to take a lead here.

Kyle: You know, at this point in the challenge, it's really all on my shoulders.
I also know in the back of my head that, you know, there's been a lot of challenges that I haven't performed very well at.
Donaldson: There it is! Blue Team.
I throw, and I land my target.
Felt great.
Donaldson: Two in a row, two in a line.
Where am I going? Yes.
Yeah.

Donaldson: Oh! There it is.

Ashley: They're probably gonna go for the easy shot, which is in between our two blue.
Donaldson: So far both teams only have one miss each.

Donaldson: Jamie sticks it for the Red Team.
Gets a block on the Blue Team.

: Right before I walked up, they changed the strategy on what I was going to do.
They wanted me to do a defensive shot on a bottom target.

Chris Tilley sticks one in the bottom row.
Don't know if it's exactly what he was aiming at, but it's certainly gonna count.

Dagger: Chris is a little sloppy on his windup.
He doesn't seem to have a concept of what his body's doing from here down, just from here up.
And so he actually misses one of his targets and drops the hawk down low.
Yeah! Oh! Oh! Red Team playing a little offense.
We have to.
At this point, the Blue Team is on the defense, because the Red Team has two different ways they can go.
The decision was made to block them high, their vertical stack.
Donaldson: Daryl back on the court.
After having missed my first shot, I really needed to connect with my second one.
Yeah! Daryl gets the block for the Blue Team.
Red had three in a row, but that just got shut down.
Chris Reed.
[ applause .]
Chris Reed sticks one for the Red Team.
Chris throws, hits his target.
They have three in a row.
And we all saw the danger at the same time.
They could go for four on either end of their row.
We either have to block left or we have to block right.
They can go either way at this point.
However, if I block left, it also sets the Blue Team up diagonally to where if the red misses, all we have to do is hit one right there and we end up winning diagonally.
Donaldson: Gonna have to block the Red Team.
The question is, which side are they gonna do it on? Yeah! Ashley with the block for the Blue Team.
Ashley performed contrary to my expectations.
He stepped up, didn't drop it there.
He was perfect in every way.

Brian: So, it actually gets to the point where the Blue Team has one space for a win.
We've got one space for a win.
We can either block the blue team, or we can go for the win.

Joe, you're the guy.

Donaldson: On the grid for the Red Team with an opportunity to win this whole thing.
Joe, missing on his first throw.

Joe: If you were gonna tell me that the most nervous shot of my life would be with a tomahawk at this distance, I would have laughed.
But walking into this, this is as nervous as I've ever been.
All the archery tournaments and all the shooting competitions I've ever been in, It just doesn't compare to this.
Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Donaldson: Sticks it for the Red Team.
Red Team is victorious.
Whoo! By far, the most intense challenge that we've had so far.
Chris t: I think the biggest turning point in that challenge was just that first throw from our team.
Donaldson: Oh! Being first in this challenge, you should have never had to go on the defensive.
When Joe went up there and missed Red Team's second throw, that really put us back where we should have been.
Donaldson: There it is.
Oh! Jay: And then it just kind of went back and forth, Blue Team, Red Team.
Yeah! [ applause .]
Donaldson: Whoa.
Chris Tilley missed the square that he was supposed to hit, which was a blocking square.
It's a huge turning point.
Yeah! Yeah! Yeah.
Yeah! George: Ashley's up there, stone-cold sticks it.
So now it's that scenario.
We've got one dot to win it or one dot to lose it.
They can connect one more on diagonal.
So it's our world-series moment.

Our best hitter could have been anybody, but it was Joe.

George: Out of everything we've shot here, you told me the tomahawk'd be the most intense thing you did, I'd be like, "yeah, dude, whatever, bro," but it was.

Daryl: I was angry after the challenge because I knew that we only needed one more throw to win.
Whether it was my throw or whether it was Chris Tilley's throw, if we had either one of those throws back, we would haze won that competition.

You guys performed well, came up short.

And, you know, the longer and longer you get to know these guys, the harder and harder it is To send someone home, so you don't want to be put in that position.

He can't.

I think the strategy was too aggressive.
It seems like some of the guys are going under the radar.
We had a great opportunity, and we blew it right there.

I think we did well today, but there's only two reasons why we lost.
One is cause I missed my first shot, and, in my opinion, Chris didn't hit the blocking target.
Jay: I agree.
I'm definitely taking responsibility on it, but I think the strategy was too aggressive.
For our strategy to work how it was, we had to go one for one every throw.

: I think everyone on our team but me thinks that the strategy was perfect.

We had the advantage just by going first, And we threw that right out the window when we went for a hard target and missed it.

Ashley: The reason that I shot Daryl's target is he missed his initial throw, so it was very difficult for us to ever get back in an offensive position.

Chris is a strong competitor.

Daryl had two back-to-back bad competitions, so that's an understandable choice, but Chris Tilley, throwing him in there again stupid.
Donaldson: Coming up on "Top Shot" Now you're gonna compete with another primitive weapon The blowgun.
Daryl: I like that.
I'm feeling pretty confident with a blowgun.

Daryl and Chris, welcome to practice for the elimination challenge.
Now you're gonna compete with another primitive weapon, one that requires you to have a good, strong set of lungs The blowgun.
Blowgun has been used for centuries by indigenous peoples around the world to hunt small game.
Today, modern blowguns are part of a growing sport using primitive weapons.
The latest versions are made from aluminum and can fire 4- to 6-inch darts.
And the longer the tube, the better the accuracy and velocity.
Primitive-weapons expert Jack Dagger is highly skilled with the blowgun and is back to help you prepare for the elimination challenge.
We've set up multiple targets Chris will go first.
Daryl will practice later.

How are you? Good to see you again.
Yes, sir.
All right, have you ever fired a blowgun? I have not.
You haven't? No, sir.
I don't know anything about it.
You point it, you blow air through it, and you shoot a dart at a target.
[ laughs .]
Let's talk about aiming for a moment.
Okay.
Dagger: The way you aim a blowgun, unlike when you're shooting a firearm, you keep both eyes open and use what's called parallax vision.
Take your left hand and take your index finger and point it towards any one of those bull's-eyes.
Okay.
Look at your fingernail on your finger, and now look at the bull's-eye.
You should see two fingers in your peripheral, near vision, right? That's called parallax vision.
Dagger: So when you're holding the blowgun, keep both eyes open, Look at the bull's-eye, and now you see two blowgun barrels.
You center your target directly between those two, and that eliminates the left-to-right variable.
Now you just have to worry about elevation and windage.
Give it a whirl.
Let's take a shot, and then I'll help you dial in your accuracy.

: It is kind of night-and-day difference.
The ghost image that you see with the pistol you learn to ignore it, and with the blowgun, you need to make sure you see that ghost image so you can actually reference your point of aim even better.

I just saw gobs of spit coming out of that barrel.
Yeah.
Chris practiced first, and he was a little slow to pick up on it.
I was hoping we could dial in his accuracy a lot more quickly.
Didn't work out that way.

: As I was practicing, my biggest struggle was my aim was pretty much just guessing it.
There it is.
Feel that difference? Yeah.
Chris shows moments of greatness.
Now we're talking.
Occasionally it all comes together and he shoots really straight, but he's not very consistent.
Looks like you're starting to feel a little bit more comfortable with this.
I spoke too soon.

I was real happy with how I ended up with the blowgun.
Perfect.
Once I got the sighting down, I was able to actually aim for a spot, and more times than not, I was able to hit it.

I had good instruction, and I think I can go out and win a good elimination challenge here.

Quick question have you ever shot a blowgun before? Probably about 10 years ago.
All right.
Go ahead and pick up the blowgun.
Get a really good seal.
Take a nice, deep breath.
Stopper that breath with your tongue on the roof of your mouth, and when you're ready, blow and keep good.
That was a very, very high-velocity dart.
Good.
Anything in the black is good.
Daryl: I think that I'm a kind of instinctive shooter.
When you're shooting with primitive weapons, you have to go off of instinct and feel, And I think that may be where I have an edge.
Perfect.
That one looks like it might be in the red.
Looks like you won't be going hungry.

It took me probably but eventually it started to become a lot more natural for me, and I could load faster and blow faster.

Whoo! Within a very short period of time, the guy was nail driving.

Daryl: I'm feeling pretty confident with the blowgun.
I think it's gonna be a very exciting challenge, but in the end, I think I'm gonna send Chris home.

: Growing up in the country, you know, we come up with all kinds of games to play.
We get out in the yard and throw hatchets at trees or throw knives at the fence.
This is the way I used to do it.
You know, we just improvise.
Not a lot to do, so we fashion our own little games up and compete with each other.

Chris is a specialist in his field, whereas I think I'm more of a Jack of all trades.

: I'm gonna be a little bit behind the curve as far as my competitor, Daryl.
Any of the primitive weapons that's gonna be his specialty.
We know that.
But one of my skills is to be able to perform under that clutch pressure.
Daryl: Chris Tilley is a world-class pistol shooter.
He competes in competitions all the time at the world level, the international level.
If Chris Tilley's gonna be put out of this competition, a primitive weapon system is the place to do it.
I think that my experience of doing the competition and dealing with the stress I think that'll help me pull through.
Daryl: I'm 44 years old.
It's in my blood to be a shooter.
I was born shooting, raised shooting, trained to shoot professionally.
I believe Chris Tilley's gonna go home, and I think I'll have an extra $2,000 in my pocket.

: Going into elimination, you have to be confident.
If you're nervous or if you're scared about something, it's not gonna help your performance at all.

: I'm pretty stoked.
I was like, you know, "these big balloons, no big deal.
"you know, I can hit all these things.
I can be faster than Daryl.
I got this.
" Donaldson: All right, welcome to the elimination challenge.
Here's how it's gonna work.
we've placed matching sets of 32 clear balloons.
Inside each one of those balloons is another smaller balloon.
The shooter that hits the most clear balloons without breaking any of the inside balloons wins.
This is a head-to-head challenge, and you will have two minutes.
Chris, you're shooting at the clear balloons with the orange ones inside.
Daryl, you're obviously going for the ones with the yellow ones inside, okay? All right.
Let's get to it.

: The object is not just to hit the big balloons, but not to hit the little balloon inside.
Now I'm starting to think, you know, "oh, my God.
" You know, it's not gonna be a speed challenge.
It's gonna be precision.
And it was a little bit more nerve-racking at that point.

Back and forth, these boys are blowing it up! Daryl: I put forth a good effort, but I didn't know if it was good enough.

Daryl: Colby calls time, and I felt that I had put forth a good effort, but I didn't know if it was good enough.

: I didn't estimate the wind having as big a role as it did.
I was too conservative in my adjustment, and I started just missing.
I think I shot three darts, didn't hit anything, and that flustered me a little bit.

Daryl: I take an early lead, and I hear Colby counting them off in the background.
Donaldson: Daryl has another point.

I seemed to be ahead Donaldson: Chris Tilley throwing them downrange.
Until Chris started catching up.
Donaldson: Chris scores again.

Daryl: Chris might have pulled ahead at the end.
I wasn't sure.
But he had a lot showing.

Bad decisions really cost Blue Team a lot.
Day one, we made some bad decisions, and some guys who should have been up for elimination have kind of fallen through the cracks.
It's kind of just messed up what should have happened from the get-go, just bad decisions.
I think the team's gonna be in a little bit of a hurting.
I think they'd better make some good decisions.
They'd better perform and start getting into the game.
