The Dead Zone s02e07 Episode Script

Misbegotten

I had the perfect life until I was in a coma for six years.
And then I woke up and found my fiancée married to another man.
My son doesn't know who I am.
Everything has changed including me.
One touch and I can see things things that happened, things that will happen.
You should see what I see.
I'm so glad we are finally able to do this.
I can't tell you how long I've been wanting to cook for you.
- Frying pan? Big one.
- Down there.
Your house is amazing.
I've been picturing it in my mind but it's even nicer than I thought.
Comfy, you know.
Okay, I don't know if you are a seafood guy but you're gonna have to trust me on this.
You'll love it, I promise.
It's sort of my specialty.
- Olive oil? - It's over there.
- All right.
Confession - Hmm? I have been practicing this recipe all week.
Probably made it like six times.
My cats never see another shrimp, they will be very happy.
You have cats? - Yeah.
- A whole bunch I bet, right? - I do.
How'd you know? - Well I All right, the deal is: Three minutes on a side.
Anymore, they go rubbery.
Jeez, look at you.
A little jumpy or what? - No, no.
- Man: Mr.
Smith? In here! Johnny, I thought it was gonna be us tonight.
It's all right, she's pretty harmless, I think, but come on in, Officer.
Johnny, what's going on? Come on, Sweetie, time to go.
She said she rode a boat across the lake to get here.
You scaled that rock wall out back? I knew he'd like me if he got to know me.
Remember: Three minutes on the side, anymore and they're rubber.
Bruce: You have a public profile now, man.
People out there watching you, aware of you, thinking about you.
And I know you don't want to think about it, but you've got to now.
I mean, somebody might try to shoot you to impress Jody Foster.
People do these things.
Why don't we dig a little moat while we're at it, and fill it with sharks? Hey, don't knock it.
It worked for Rob Roy.
- Rob Roy? - Scottish dude, kilts and castle.
Every new lock on the door doesn't just lock the crazies out, it locks me in.
I feel isolated enough as it is.
I used to have a life once.
Safe room: Reinforced walls, steel doors, separate communication system.
Impenetrable! No.
All the best homes have 'em nowadays nothing to be embarrassed about.
I'm not embarrassed, I'm speechless.
Thanks anyway, okay? Can we talk about the buffer zone around the perimeter? You sure 200 feet's enough? I gotta get out of here.
I've got a lunch date with Dana.
- How is that going, by the way? - I don't know.
I haven't talked to her for a while.
Then I called her once and cancelled.
- So you're screwing up again.
- You could say that.
She thinks it's because of me and Sarah.
There is no "you and Sarah.
" You gotta get beyond that.
That was a one night mistake.
- That changed everything.
- That's how we learn.
But with your abilities, you should be learning from your mistakes before you make 'em.
(alarm blares) (alarm stops) Instead of a moat with a shark, how about koi? - No.
- Man-eating koi, yeah.
- Are you hurt? - No, I don't think so.
I don't know what happened.
I just looked down for a second - I'll call for help.
- No, no, I think I'll be all right.
(groaning) (theme music playing) * Oooh * * Fall in love, fall in love, fall in love * * Fall in love * * Feel no shame for what you are * * Feel no shame for what you are * * Feel no shame for what you are * * Fall in love, fall in love * * Fall in love.
* He left to meet you over an hour ago.
Did you try his cell? About 20 times.
Do you have any idea where he can be? - Sorry, I really don't.
- Sarah didn't call him, did she? Dana, if Johnny was supposed to meet you, he wouldn't just blow you off Okay, listen, if he checks in, just have him give me a call, will you? That is, if it isn't too much trouble.
Walt's not here.
I know, I'm looking for Johnny.
- Is he here? - No.
Do you mind if I look for him myself? Wow, you really have a hell of a lot of nerve, don't you? The secret to my success.
Yeah, well, I'm very busy, okay? Excuse me.
You know, I just need to - Get your foot out of the door.
- (cell phone ringing) - Okay, time.
- Time? What is this, a playground? It might be him.
Dana Bright.
Hey Dana, have you seen Johnny? No, but that seems to be the question of the day.
I was just asking your wife the same thing.
Sarah's with you right now? Yes, we were just about to sit down to tea.
Has she heard from him? He wants to know if you heard from him.
- Walt, what is going on? - I'm up on Cypress Hill Road.
One of my guys found Johnny's car on the shoulder.
Has he been in an accident? No, the car's fine, the engine runs, it's got gas in it, but there's no sign of Johnny.
Hey, Walt, over here.
Listen, I gotta go.
If I find anything, I'll call you.
I'll call both of you.
Wait a minute, I Well, I'm not gonna sit here and wait for a call.
Check out these tracks.
Heel marks.
They start right here, then they move over to here.
Then boom, they stop.
(motor humming) (drums playing) (laughter) (imitating cheers) Oliver Stone is a pussy! How's it going? If everything rocks this hard, we are in business.
The movie business, baby! Don't.
- Don't what? - Tease.
- Who says I'm teasing? - It's always a tease with you.
Well, so sorry I bothered you.
Anita, look, I didn't mean It's okay.
We have a lot of work to do.
There are spider webs everywhere.
You sure I can't tidy up? Don't you dare! I wonder what would happen if Johnny Smith touched a spider.
Maybe he sees himself ingesting a fly.
Oh, please! I can recreate that vision it'd be a great shot.
Hey there, "Sleeping Beauty.
" We thought you'd never wake up.
His eyes are still glassy.
You used too much chloroform.
I can't remember exactly what it said on the website.
He's gonna be okay, isn't he? Mr.
Smith, nod if you can understand me.
I don't think that he can nod.
Okay, blink if you can understand me.
Good.
Johnny, I didn't want it to be this way, but if we'd just had a chance to talk the other night.
She did that entirely on her own.
If we'd had known I thought if we had a chance to get to know each other, you might agree to do this for us, knowing the kind of man that you are, always reaching out to people with a helping hand.
That's why I respect you so much, Johnny.
Thank you for not pressing charges.
That was very sweet of you.
Rest assured, we're not professional kidnappers.
Had your representatives adequately responded to Maddy's proposal for this project, none of this would've been necessary.
But all she got back was a form letter.
From the Faith Heritage Alliance.
"Thank you for your interest in Johnny Smith.
Good luck to you in the future and God bless.
" So here we are.
Now, as you can see we're making a sort of documentary.
Maddy is our filmaker.
My name is Anita.
And I don't really think that we need any last names.
And I'm a what would you call me? Technical consultant, historian.
I've had an interest in this house and others like it for some time now.
Maddy and I are from L.
A.
And I am the local "Smithophile" and caterer.
We met in a chatroom.
We're across the stateline in New Hampshire in an abandonned farm house.
some terrible murders occured here.
They say it's haunted.
We thought if we could get you all together the psychic, the abandonned farmhouse, the camera sparks would fly bang instant chemistry.
- Like the "Blair Witch Project.
" - "Blair Witch" is crap.
Commercialism masquerading as verité.
What we're doing is real.
Oh, you're sweating.
It must be hot inside that duct tape.
Good thing I stopped by the local picnic headquarters, and picked up some supplies.
Wipies! Darling, I know, but I'm gonna take good care of you.
And this will give us a chance to really get to know each other.
(muffled scream) We don't know if this is an abduction case yet, but we're gonna treat it as one to be on the safe side.
Roscoe, I want you ready in case the kidnappers call.
I want you to get Rudy and Alice set up on the phones over at Purdy's place, at Johnny's and here just to cover our bases.
What about the girl who broke into Johnny's house last week? The first call I made was the Sheriff in Braxton they're trying to locate her now.
And Dana, I want a 48-hour embargo on this story.
I don't want every looney tune coming out of the woodwork.
He's been missing less than a day.
No paper is going to run with it yet.
All right, well, that's good.
Bruce and I are gonna retrace Johnny's footsteps over the last 24 hours.
The rest of you got your assignments, so go ahead.
- Go get to it.
- Let's go! What's my assignment? - Sarah - Don't tell me to go home.
Look, this is police business, all right? Bruce is going on police business.
Yeah, because Bruce has been with Johnny over the last 24 hours, - and that makes him a - (silence) material witness.
- Ah.
Uh-huh.
- And he is not the Sheriff's wife.
- That too.
- Hey, she can go with me.
- No, she can't.
(phone ringing) - All right, where are you going? - Faith Heritage mail room.
The fan mail might give us some clues.
All right, it's a good idea.
You can go with her.
If that works for you, honey.
"Cross your heart and hope to die?" We're miles away from civilization, he can scream all he wants.
Okay, go ahead, the camera's rolling.
- How do you feel, Johnny? - We have to get out of here.
- Great opening line! - I'm serious.
It isn't safe here.
If it were safe here, we wouldn't have a movie.
I saw a sickle.
There was blood everywhere.
Anita: A sickle.
Like this one? The sickle I saw wasn't in the past.
This was the kind of sickle used in the murders, Mr.
Smith.
They never recovered the actual murder weapon.
The sickle I saw someone was attacking us with it.
And there was blood everywhere and people were dying.
Penny: Hot Toll House cookies everyone! Eat now! I used real chocolate chips.
Penny, you know me better than they do, - Please tell them to believe me.
- About what? Anita: He had a vision that we're all gonna be killed by ghosts.
- I didn't say ghosts.
- What if he did see something? Come on, we expected this.
He's just trying to scare us into letting him go.
- Nice try, Johnny.
- Will you listen to me? - Penny: Eat now.
- Will you listen to me?! and church storage on the left.
It's our job our part of the bargain to screen his mail to identify individuals who might pose a threat.
I must confess, it's been an even greater challenge than I anticipated.
- You've got to be kidding.
- This is all for Johnny? They're not all kooks.
Most of them are requests for autographs, thank yous from people he has inspired.
And these? We've got some people hoping for a reading.
They send these things in, wanting Johnny Smith to touch them.
Baseballs, necklace Hmm, yours? I don't need to mail him mine.
So, how many weeks does this all represent? This is today's delivery.
We get six of these every week.
Johnny: Whether you believe me or not this is still a bad idea.
You don't want to go to prison, do you? No one's going to prison.
The last time I checked, kidnapping was still a felony.
Can we stop wasting time? This house has a story to tell and you are here to tell it.
The sooner you do that, the sooner you get out.
I need to touch things.
I can't do it taped to this chair.
Use your feet.
Push him.
- Nothing.
- Penny, stop looking at the camera.
Sorry, it's not like I've ever done this before.
Well? I'm not getting anything.
I thought I'd buy a roast.
I can pick one up on the way back from town.
And if you want, I'll bake a pie.
There were nice peaches yesterday.
(country music playing on radio) Man and wife.
The radio is playing an old country song.
He's balding with sideburns? - Yes.
- You want to invite the Petersons? He drinks too much and he gets mean when he's drunk.
She has blond hair, probably tied in a bun.
Yes, blonde hair in a bun.
Daniel and Cheryl Connor.
- Someone's singing it's a girl.
- (girl singing) In a nearby room.
* Big house, little house, back house, barn * * Big house, little house * This was a playroom for the children.
* Little house, back house, barn * - * Big house, little house * - She's jumping rope.
* Back house, barn * (singing together) * Big house, little house * * Back house, barn * * Big house, little house, back house, barn * - Long red hair.
- Halfway down her back.
Not after she was killed.
* Big house, little house, back house, barn.
* Tina Connor.
They never found her hair.
There's a boy here, too.
- Reading.
- Nicholas.
He hid in the basement crawl space during the killings.
They didn't find him for three days.
Couldn't speak for a year afterwards.
He spend most of his life in and out of mental institutions.
No one's heard from him in two years.
I've tried everything I can to find him.
Great stuff! I've got to recharge the battery.
Johnny, if you'll give me the details, I'm gonna dramatize the visions with actors later on.
Wonderful work, everyone.
Let's break for dinner.
Penny, I've done everything you've asked from me Except tell us who did it.
That's why we're here - to identify the Reaper.
- The Reaper? That's what they call the drifter who killed them all.
Okay, light pasta salad for dinner.
Look, I wasn't kidding before.
- We can't stay here.
- You are persistent, aren't you? So are you, to do something as insane as this.
I am trying to solve a mystery.
There is a cold-blooded killer who walked away from here scott-free and he could still be alive for all we know.
It is important to me to find him.
Why? Did you know you can buy famous murder action figures on the net, Mr.
Smith? Manson, Bundy, Casey in his clown outfit.
Now they're all in jail or dead, which is why they don't frighten us anymore, why they can be toys.
I hope to add the Reaper to my collection someday soon.
Very soon, with your help.
Man: * Big house, little house, back house, barn * * Big house, little house, back house, barn * * Big house, little house, back house, barn.
* Whoops! I think I got another one.
Penny Barton? It's the same handwriting, same return address.
"Dear Johnny, if you touch this letter, you'll be touching me.
" Russell Crowe doesn't get letters like these! Sure he does.
Well, that makes 13 in three months from this Barton woman.
I have still got you by two, with my pile from Mrs.
Hazel Glim of Butte, Montana, who thinks that Johnny is a sign from the Lord that the world is coming to an end.
God, all these people, you know complete strangers who think that they know Johnny intimately.
Maybe they should talk to us.
We can give 'em the skinny on him.
How he likes to wear the same clothes for two days in a row sometimes.
Oh, I hate when he does that.
Or when he sings off-key to the radio in the car.
(chuckles) - And when he eats, he talks - Both: With his mouth full! - I know.
- Uh-huh, uh-huh.
And how he snores, oh my God! He is good at finding lost keys, though.
And that is very true.
And he doesn't watch a lot of sports on TV because he always knows who's gonna win, the poor guy! Do you think he's okay? What we need is a psychic to help find our psychic.
Oh, I've got another one for you.
Penny Barton, she's one behind Hazel.
Let me see that.
Look, this one was dated just a couple of days ago.
I wonder what she was doing at a motel in Bangor.
Somehow, they tracked down our IP adddress, breached the firewall and shot their videostream down our T3 line.
- How much are they asking for? - Actually, they want to pay us.
Promise me you'll watch the whole thing before you say no.
Sorry I can't join you in person today, Reverend, but I am on location on production of my new movie coming soon to a multiplex near you.
Here's a sneak preview.
My God, it's Johnny! - Have you called the sheriff? - The deputies are downstairs.
Johnny's fine.
There's nothing to worry about.
He will be released shortly if you follow these instructions.
Attached to this file is a seven-minute trailer for our film that we'd like you to run on the Faith Heritage Network tonight at 10.
We have already advised potential distributors of this broadcast schedule.
In return, we're prepared to give Faith Heritage charities should distribution be secured as a result of your telecast.
It's only reasonable.
And we are reasonable people, Reverend.
For Johnny's sake, I hope you are too.
See you on the tube.
They may think they're going to soothe their consciences and evade prison with this blood money, but I can assure you what is this? They sent over the gross receipts for a movie called "The Blair Witch Project.
" All I care about is getting Johnny back unharmed.
Blair Witch? another 100 video, DVD, cable and pay-per-view.
in the neighborhood of 17 million.
I know how disappointed you've been with the fund raising efforts for the new theology building.
(grunting) Ouch! Nicholas, be careful.
(knocks at the door) (knocking continues) Ready for dinner? I'm not really hungry.
You have to eat.
Really, those toll-house cookies really filled me up.
No, no.
- You're angry with me.
- I'm not angry.
- Promise? - Penny I'd really like to get to know you better.
Well, I'm a leap year baby, I like to knit sweaters for my family.
I'm the knitter.
Everyone else in the family is in the canning industry.
- Our house smells like fresh tuna.
- No, I mean I'd like to spend more time with you, away from here, you know.
- Patty Hearst.
- What? The website told me about it.
How the victim begins to identify with his abductor.
It's really not that, though.
I really I feel close to you.
Really? I wish I could believe that, Johnny.
Penny? I need your help to get me out of here.
I'm sorry, Johnny, I can't.
- I thought you cared about me.
- That's not fair.
- You know I do.
- Then help me.
I'll never see you again.
They'll lock me up this time.
I won't let them, Penny.
We'll be together.
You and me.
Relax your lips.
I can't get my tongue in.
I'm sorry but as I told you over the phone, no Barton has been registered here recently.
Maybe you've seen her.
Yes, she sang in our karaoke bar a few nights ago.
"Summer Wind," I think it was.
Singing karaoke.
It might be a little premature to call Walt in on this.
I think she was visiting some friends two young women from Los Angeles.
They're still checked in but I haven't seen them around for the last few days.
Do you believe in destiny, Johnny? Because I do.
I believe it's what brought us together.
Brought us together on this night.
I'm ovulating.
My temperature's up.
I took the test while the pasta was cooking.
You've got to be kidding, right? Johnny, I want to have your baby.
(meows) Penny, we can't do this.
Oh yes we can! Oh my God! The Connor farm! A family was killed there, It's right over the state line.
Walt? Penny: If it's a boy, we'll name him Johnny.
If it's a girl we'll still name her Johnny.
Penny, not here.
Not like this.
Yes, exactly like this.
What are you doing? Maddy: Keep going, I'm not even here.
Get out! It's a special moment between Johnny and me.
Stop looking at the camera! Let go, stop! (screaming) What happened? Penny: A question mark? Anita: It's not a question mark, it's a sickle.
Penny: Who put it there? Maddy? Maddy: Why would I? To make your movie more exciting? Maddy: I swear it wasn't me.
Penny: Don't look at me, I was with Johnny.
Anita: Somebody is either lying Penny: Or somebody else is in the house.
Penny: Scary.
Maddy: Cool.
- Penny: You are not filming this.
- Anita: Wait, what was that? What are you doing out here? (screaming) Johnny, are you all right? I can't believe I didn't get this on film.
- Nicholas! Nicholas did it.
- Anita: What?! It was Nicholas.
There was no drifter.
Nicholas killed them all.
His own family? That's ridiculous.
Nicholas was just a young boy.
I know what I saw.
I want out of this chair.
(sirens blaring) I saw a sickle in his hands.
He's lying.
He just wants to get out of here.
He's not the only one.
Nicholas is here.
He's in this house.
Don't you see what he's doing? - He's trying to scare us.
- Is there another exit? There's a back door, but it's boarded up.
Will you stop filming already? What about the windows? Anita: I have read the psychiatric reports cover to cover.
The subject suffered a complete infantile regression, which is consistent with severe emotional trauma.
Maybe there's somebody in this house, but not Nicholas.
These boards are an inch thick and the nails haven't been touched in years.
Listen to me, Nicholas isn't a killer, he is a victim.
Whatever he saw or heard, it completely terrified him.
It almost paralysed him.
Anita! Let her go, let her go.
(sobbing) He's lying.
Liar! He's lying.
(sobbing) He's lying.
It was a stranger.
It was a drifter.
(speaking in a man's voice) You didn't kill them.
You couldn't have, it wasn't you.
What did you do? What did you do? What did you do? Johnny, they're a couple.
Maddy would know if You would know, right, Maddy? Oh my God, I'm so stupid.
We hardly ever messed around, and when we did, she never wanted to.
All right, listen, you two get in the den.
Right now! Get in there and lock the door.
Don't come out until I come back.
Anita! TV Announcer: Come with us on a journey to Bethlehem.
Good evening ladies and gentlemen.
I am Reverend Eugene Purdy, with the Faith Heritage Alliance.
Tonight, "Journey to Bethlehem" will be delayed, so that we might bring you a special presentation of sorts and I might caution you, this is not for children, nor for the faint of heart.
Oh my God, they're playing it! Anita? Anita? You said this house had a story to tell.
Do you want to hear it? It's about a boy a troubled boy who couldn't deal with the things that he was feeling.
So he lashed out violently, against his own family.
(metal screeching) He couldn't live with what he did, so he buried it within himself and eventually became a completely different person.
But some part of him must have wanted the truth to come out.
That's why you brought us back here, isn't it? To tell yourself the truth, and get the help you must know you need? (screams) (sobbing) It's over, Nicholas.
(sobbing continues) (yelling from outside) Here! Here, here! That camera and all videotapes are my property.
My entertainment attorney is in L.
A.
His card is in my back pocket.
I don't think an entertainment attorney is exactly what you need right now.
You would have really liked me, you know, when you got to know me.
Take care of yourself, Penny.
Write me! What in the world do you think she sees in him? - You got me.
- Come on, I'll give you a ride home.
Since when did those two start I think when they saw the autographed bra and panties you've been getting.
Man! That reminds me, I've got to talk to Purdy about those form letters.
Hold on a second.
(theme music playing) - No no! - Yes yes! You're grounded!
