Summer School: Chapter Eight
[pensive music playing]
[sighs]
- Ms. Woods.
- Mr. Tyler. Um
Happy Fourth.
- [wind howling]
- [exclaims]
Not that it feels like it, hmm?
What are you doing here?
I wanted to apologize again
for accusing you of cheating.
[chuckles]
You came all the way out here
to do that?
Well, no.
I put together some college brochures
and financial aid information.
College?
College was a place
I could start over again,
to be who I wanted to be
instead of who people said I was.
Who the hell are you?
Hello, I'm Miss Woods.
One of Rick's teachers.
Well, you're trespassing, lady.
So, why don't you
get your ass off my property.
- Hey!
- It's all right, Rick.
I'm happy to go over this anytime.
Happy Fourth.
Who gives a hell?
[car engine starting]
- Why do you have to be such a jerk?
- Give me that.
You'll end up in jail
before you end up in college.
[sighs]
[wind blowing]
["Wash Me Clean" playing]
Cold bitter hands
Cold bitter nights
I can feel the daylight rising
A shake in the ground
A split in the skies
I can feel a new tide rising
Will it wash me clean?
Will it wash me clean?
[sobbing] I am sick of this.
Do you hear me?
[breathing heavily]
[screaming] I am so tired
of giving everything
and getting nothing back!
[sobbing]
I'm tired.
I am so tired.
- [exhales sharply]
- [creaking]
- [sighs]
- [bird flapping]
[low growling]
[footsteps approaching]
[low growl]
[Barbara] Hey, where you going?
I want to go talk to Yolanda.
I couldn't sleep all night.
She's my best friend, Mom,
and I dragged her into this.
I have to at least apologize
for what's happened.
You know, Court,
it's not your fault.
Yeah, honey, you only tried to help her.
How can I help her now?
By giving her time.
- What?
- Yeah.
No, no, that's terrible advice.
You help her by kicking Eclipso's ass.
There's no way
it wasn't him that did it.
And who's to say
what he's going to do next?
[doorbell rings]
Eclipso wouldn't ring the doorbell,
would he?
[ominous music playing]
[Beth typing]
[laptop beeping]
[warning beep]
[warning beep]
[static]
- [Dr. McNider] Hello.
- [gasps]
Dr. McNider? Hello?
[Dr. McNider] Who is this?
Dr. McNider, this is Beth, Beth Chapel.
We spoke before, remember?
You warned me about Eclipso?
- Hello?
- What are you doing with my goggles?
I found them?
[beeping]
Everyone says
you're supposed to be dead.
Are you
a ghost?
Clinically speaking, I am alive.
But how?
You have my original goggles.
The two pair must be connected
most likely because the barrier
has been breached.
Whoa! [chuckles]
That's bonkers.
How old are you?
I just turned 16 in May,
but I am very trustworthy.
I think they've seen me.
I need to keep moving.
What? Where are you?
I'm in the shadow
[static]
Hello?
Dr. McNider?
- [static]
- [eerie music playing]
[Grundy munching]
[grunting and munching]
I get why you like it out here.
It's quiet, huh?
We had a dog once.
[belches]
Pit bull called Jags.
When my uncle got him from the pound,
he was all beat up and vicious.
My uncle got him
because he wanted a fight dog.
Treated him terribly,
made him worse.
So, one day
I told Matt that Jags ran away,
but really, I took him over
to Oakville and I found him a new home.
When I went back
to visit him a year later
he was a different dog.
Because people cared about him.
They loved him.
Maybe you just need someone
to be a little kind.
[juice squirting]
[Grundy growls]
[chuckles]
[Grundy growling]
What am I doing?
You don't understand
a damn thing I'm talking about.
[growling gently]
[chuckles]
[Grundy belches]
[ominous music playing]
Hi.
I wish I knew how to help you, too.
Not only because I think you have
the power to stop Eclipso
but because you're my friend.
I'm sorry I haven't said that before.
[Cosmic Staff buzzing]
Beth?
Mom, Dad.
You're never here this time of day.
Your father and I thought
we should finally talk about
the divorce.
You made lunch?
[both chuckles]
Well, before I mastered surgery,
I mastered Reubens.
Best in the world.
Wow, it looks delicious.
Should we talk?
When your mother and I
first got together, Beth,
- we fell in love at first
- First sight.
[sighs] But when you were born,
we made the decision to focus on you.
What does this have to do
with your divorce?
Raising you, trying to work, we just
We We just lost sight of each other.
I mean juggling it all, it's difficult.
And eventually we just
We grew apart. Yeah.
- Because
- Because
Because of you, Beth.
[eerie music playing]
What?
- [squeaking]
- [gasps]
[Dr. Chapel] Beth?
[Beth screams]
Beth, I know you're upset,
but that's no reason
Did you see that?
See what?
I have to go.
[James] Beth, you come back here.
- [Dr. Chapel] Beth. Where are you going?
- [James] Beth.
[radio playing]
[man on radio]
Happy Fourth of July, Blue Valley.
Now, be careful
with your celebrations tonight
because we've had reports
of another bear sighting earlier today,
this time a little closer to town.
You ask me, I agree with our callers.
We can't take any chances, folks.
You know, it's one thing to break into
the Taco Whiz or Waffle World,
but, hey, I've got kids
that play in those woods.
So, a big thanks to
the Blue Valley Hunters Association,
who have volunteered
to get out there and kill the bear.
They've requested everyone
who is willing
to be able to join in on the hunt.
I don't know about you folks,
but I'm gonna grab my shotgun
and get me a bear.
[men shouting in distance]
[ominous music playing]
Gonna get you all fixed up, buddy boy.
Both a little banged up, aren't we?
Pat.
What are you doing here?
We need to do something about Cosmo.
Who's Cosmo?
The staff.
You named the staff?
You named the robot.
No, you did.
Whatever. [huffs]
We can't just sit around
and hope the staff gets better.
Hope that Eclipso
doesn't do anything else.
Hope that things just fix themselves.
Well, we're not doing that, okay?
I'm working really hard
to get STRIPE online
and remember, the staff,
it was designed to fix itself.
Well, it's taking too long.
Listen, the JSA were all about
being ready at the right time,
not rushing in totally disorganized.
You gotta be patient.
Yolanda quit,
Eclipso is free,
things are out of control,
and no one's safe,
and I I feel completely useless.
I I know how you feel.
[sighs] What is Eclipso waiting for now?
Where is he?
I don't know,
but let's regroup with Rick and Beth,
and, uh, you know, maybe we can figure
something out
- [cellphone vibrating]
- Hold on.
Speak of the devil.
- Hey, Rick.
- Pat,
Grundy needs our help.
[pensive music playing]
[line ringing]
[voice message]
It's Rick, call you back.
[Cosmic Staff buzzing]
I don't think Cosmo
has more than one or two shots in him.
- If we run into Grundy
- Then you need to make 'em count.
Why is he out here
in the first place?
Grundy's a monster.
Can't predict what he'll do.
But Rick's been feeding him
for weeks?
Why?
Said he'd explain it later.
I just can't believe
he'd keep a secret like this.
Gotta have a reason.
[door opens]
[Beth] Hello?
Courtney?
Mrs. Whitmore?
Hello?
Mike?
Mr. Dugan?
Buddy?
Anybody?
Hi.
[eerie music playing]
- [low growling]
- [creaking]
Don't you speak?
Who are you?
I'm Bruce.
Bruce
What are you doing here, Bruce?
Where else should I be?
This isn't your house.
Well, it's not yours either,
but here you are.
Are you gonna steal something?
You're Beth Chapel,
and you're a liar and a thief.
You don't know me.
I know your kind.
I know you stole these.
You lied about
being a friend of Courtney,
then you stole these.
Those goggles are mine.
Liar! You lied again.
Stop it!
Stealing, that's what you people do.
Shut up.
Come and get them
if you want. [giggling]
[eerie music playing]
[voice whispering]
[Bruce giggling]
I know you're in the closet.
Come out of there!
You aren't very smart, are you?
You can't be trusted with these.
You're Eclipso.
The staff chose Courtney.
Courtney chose Yolanda.
Rick's dad chose him.
But no one chose you.
That's because you're no fighter.
I thought you people are athletic.
I guess some of the stereotypes
are wrong.
Racist!
- [growling]
- [screams]
[pensive music playing]
Whoa! You need to get out of here, kid.
What happened?
Something hit him,
and it wasn't no bear.
Now, worse, a girl's gone missing.
- What?
- Ten-year-old.
Disappeared from
her family's horse farm,
just the other side of the stream.
- We need to kill whatever is out here.
- No!
I'll find her,
I'll make sure she's safe.
He wouldn't hurt her.
Who? What is that thing?
Son, you need to go home!
It's not safe out there, son!
It's not safe for anyone!
[banging on door]
[yelps]
- [groaning]
- [eerie music playing]
- What are you doing here?
- [gasps]
- What?
- How did you get in here, kid? Huh?
Are you lost?
I think she is, boys.
You don't belong here.
One of these things
is not like the other.
You're all wrong.
Wrong age.
Wrong gender.
Wrong color.
[laughing]
[Beth] Get back here!
Stop!
[dramatic music playing]
How come we haven't seen anyone?
No hunters or Rick.
I was wondering the same thing.
- [man shouting in distance]
- [gunshots in distance]
[growling in distance]
Grundy!
[Courtney sighs]
[Rick] Grundy!
Grundy!
[music continues playing]
Grundy!
Grundy!
[Grundy growling]
Grundy?
[growling]
Grundy
Are you okay?
[low growling]
No
Did you kill her?
[Grundy growling]
[screaming] Did you kill her?
[growling]
You damn monster!
- [Courtney] Rick!
- I'm going to kill you.
[Courtney] Rick, wait!
[Rick] Grundy!
Rick!
[breath trembling]
[eerie music playing]
[girl laughing]
Eclipso.
[dramatic music playing]
[Grundy growling]
Why did you do it?
Why did you kill that little girl?
- [screaming]
- [growling]
[firecrackers exploding]
- [Bruce laughing]
- [gasps]
[voice whispering]
[Bruce laughing]
[Bruce] You can pretend to be brave,
but you're not.
You don't know anything.
[Bruce] I know everything
about you, Beth.
That's what scares you the most.
[Bruce giggling]
[eerie music playing]
[Bruce] You've been hiding behind
that stupid smile your entire life.
I'm a friend of Courtney's.
Does this mean that I get a costume?
No worries.
Ignore us like you usually do.
[Bruce laughing]
Behind those glasses,
you're just a scared little girl.
If I'm so scared,
why are you hiding?
What are you afraid of?
[low growling]
Nothing!
[gasps]
[grunting]
- [Pat] Rick!
- [Courtney] Rick!
- Rick!
- Rick!
Stop! Rick!
Stay out of it!
You're the weakest among them,
and you know it.
Born from nothing.
Destined to be
nothing.
[sighs]
No!
[gasps]
Funny girl.
[Courtney] Rick, please stop.
[Pat] You don't know what you're doing.
That's not Grundy!
[Courtney] Rick, stop!
[grunting]
[Rick groans]
[breathing heavily]
[somber music playing]
[breathing heavily]
[pensive music playing]
[gasps]
[Eclipso grunts]
Admit your fear,
your envy,
your anger!
You forced yourself into
the group as you've done all your life.
I belong here.
I'm not scared.
I'm not hiding.
They don't want you.
No one does.
[Beth grunts]
No one chose you!
That's what you need me to do?
Give in to my worst fear?
That I'm an outsider?
I won't.
I'm strong.
Proud.
And I chose myself to be Dr. Mid-Nite.
I choose me!
[exclaims in pain]
Oh, yeah, and I love being Black.
[growls]
[Beth screams]
[radio chatter]
[ominous music playing]
[engine starts]
[siren wailing]
[siren wailing]
[firecrackers exploding]
[growling]
Friend.
- [static]
- [Beth breathing heavily]
What happened?
How did I get back here?
[Dr. McNider]
You never left your home, Beth.
I was watching you had
vision, seeing
Dr. McNider?
Do not take off the goggles.
What?
They'll let you see
through Eclipso's visions.
So, the goggles saved my life.
No, you did.
Whoever you are.
I'm
the new Dr. Mid-Nite.
Hello.
Hello?
[Dr. Chapel] Beth, is that you,
honey?
Beth?
Mom?
[chuckles] Oh, there you are.
[sighs and chuckles]
I'm so sorry about earlier.
Earlier?
What are you talking about?
We haven't been here all day.
[beeping]
You and Dad were in the living room.
We've We've been at work, Beth.
[Dr. Chapel] Honey, are you all right?
I don't know.
Sometimes
I think I'm trying to be something
I don't know that I can be.
[Dr. Chapel] Why?
Because of what someone said?
Well
Yeah.
[sighs]
You know,
Beth, when we first moved
to Blue Valley,
there had never been
another Black doctor working here.
I came in to replace Dr. Brady,
and I dealt with some things.
He had been working in this town
for over 50 years?
And, uh
people loved him, with good reason.
But they didn't know what to make of me.
- That had to be hard.
- Yeah.
They didn't trust
that I could do the job.
How did you handle that?
[chuckles]
Oh, I did my job the best I knew how.
I helped heal some people,
saved a few lives,
delivered a lot of kids.
She worked harder than anyone.
And eventually,
I won Blue Valley over.
Beth, you can be anything
you want to be,
because you're our daughter.
Mm-hmm.
You'll work hard, because
that's what this family does.
And don't let anyone,
no matter what they look like,
tell you any different.
No one, Beth.
Thanks.
[chuckles] Come here, sweetie.
Mmm.
What are you wearing?
Oh, these?
These are for swimming.
I'm gonna join the swim team.
[chuckles]
Rick thought he saw hunters.
And Solomon Grundy killing a child.
[grunts]
And now, Rick's uncle
is in critical condition.
Pat and Courtney went
to the police station
to see if there's something they can do
for Rick, but
What can we do?
Be here for them when they get back.
I'm here for you, too, Mom.
Thanks, Mike.
[ice crackling]

- [gunshots in distance]
[growling in distance]
Grundy!
[Courtney sighs]
[Rick] Grundy!
Grundy!
[music continues playing]
Grundy!
Grundy!
[Grundy growling]
Grundy?
[growling]
Grundy
Are you okay?
[low growling]
No
Did you kill her?
[Grundy growling]
[screaming] Did you kill her?
[growling]
You damn monster!
- [Courtney] Rick!
- I'm going to kill you.
[Courtney] Rick, wait!
[Rick] Grundy!
Rick!
[breath trembling]
[eerie music playing]
[girl laughing]
Eclipso.
[dramatic music playing]
[Grundy growling]
Why did you do it?
Why did you kill that little girl?
- [screaming]
- [growling]
[firecrackers exploding]
- [Bruce laughing]
- [gasps]
[voice whispering]
[Bruce laughing]
[Bruce] You can pretend to be brave,
but you're not.
You don't know anything.
[Bruce] I know everything
about you, Beth.
That's what scares you the most.
[Bruce giggling]
[eerie music playing]
[Bruce] You've been hiding behind
that stupid smile your entire life.
I'm a friend of Courtney's.
Does this mean that I get a costume?
No worries.
Ignore us like you usually do.
[Bruce laughing]
Behind those glasses,
you're just a scared little girl.
If I'm so scared,
why are you hiding?
What are you afraid of?
[low growling]
Nothing!
[gasps]
[grunting]
- [Pat] Rick!
- [Courtney] Rick!
- Rick!
- Rick!
Stop! Rick!
Stay out of it!
You're the weakest among them,
and you know it.
Born from nothing.
Destined to be
nothing.
[sighs]
No!
[gasps]
Funny girl.
[Courtney] Rick, please stop.
[Pat] You don't know what you're doing.
That's not Grundy!
[Courtney] Rick, stop!
[grunting]
[Rick groans]
[breathing heavily]
[somber music playing]
[breathing heavily]
[pensive music playing]
[gasps]
[Eclipso grunts]
Admit your fear,
your envy,
your anger!
You forced yourself into
the group as you've done all your life.
I belong here.
I'm not scared.
I'm not hiding.
They don't want you.
No one does.
[Beth grunts]
No one chose you!
That's what you need me to do?
Give in to my worst fear?
That I'm an outsider?
I won't.
I'm strong.
Proud.
And I chose myself to be Dr. Mid-Nite.
I choose me!
[exclaims in pain]
Oh, yeah, and I love being Black.
[growls]
[Beth screams]
[radio chatter]
[ominous music playing]
[engine starts]
[siren wailing]
[siren wailing]
[firecrackers exploding]
[growling]
Friend.
- [static]
- [Beth breathing heavily]
What happened?
How did I get back here?
[Dr. McNider]
You never left your home, Beth.
I was watching you had
vision, seeing
Dr. McNider?
Do not take off the goggles.
What?
They'll let you see
through Eclipso's visions.
So, the goggles saved my life.
No, you did.
Whoever you are.
I'm
the new Dr. Mid-Nite.
Hello.
Hello?
[Dr. Chapel] Beth, is that you,
honey?
Beth?
Mom?
[chuckles] Oh, there you are.
[sighs and chuckles]
I'm so sorry about earlier.
Earlier?
What are you talking about?
We haven't been here all day.
[beeping]
You and Dad were in the living room.
We've We've been at work, Beth.
[Dr. Chapel] Honey, are you all right?
I don't know.
Sometimes
I think I'm trying to be something
I don't know that I can be.
[Dr. Chapel] Why?
Because of what someone said?
Well
Yeah.
[sighs]
You know,
Beth, when we first moved
to Blue Valley,
there had never been
another Black doctor working here.
I came in to replace Dr. Brady,
and I dealt with some things.
He had been working in this town
for over 50 years?
And, uh
people loved him, with good reason.
But they didn't know what to make of me.
- That had to be hard.
- Yeah.
They didn't trust
that I could do the job.
How did you handle that?
[chuckles]
Oh, I did my job the best I knew how.
I helped heal some people,
saved a few lives,
delivered a lot of kids.
She worked harder than anyone.
And eventually,
I won Blue Valley over.
Beth, you can be anything
you want to be,
because you're our daughter.
Mm-hmm.
You'll work hard, because
that's what this family does.
And don't let anyone,
no matter what they look like,
tell you any different.
No one, Beth.
Thanks.
[chuckles] Come here, sweetie.
Mmm.
What are you wearing?
Oh, these?
These are for swimming.
I'm gonna join the swim team.
[chuckles]
Rick thought he saw hunters.
And Solomon Grundy killing a child.
[grunts]
And now, Rick's uncle
is in critical condition.
Pat and Courtney went
to the police station
to see if there's something they can do
for Rick, but
What can we do?
Be here for them when they get back.
I'm here for you, too, Mom.
Thanks, Mike.
[ice crackling]
