Cheer (2020) s02e09 Episode Script

Daytona Pt. 2: If the Judges Disagree

1 Show of hands, and it's it's completely okay if your answer to this question is you.
And you should raise your hand, you should be proud about it.
How many people that performed today had the best performance that they've had of this routine this year? Raise your hand if you had the best performance of this year.
Nice.
Nothing wrong with that.
1 out of 20.
Okay.
Now let's look at the scores.
All right.
Stunts, difficulty, four four.
Technique, four eight.
Score, nine point two.
Pyramids, difficulty, four point eight.
Technique, four point seven.
Score, nine point five.
Running, tumbling.
Difficulty, five.
Technique, four point nine.
Score, nine point nine.
Oh.
Choreography, nine point eight.
Overall effect, nine point eight seven.
- Raw score over 97.
77.
- Okay.
Pyramid, difficulty, four point eight.
Technique, four point seven.
Four point seven? We had a massive implosion Right? and we're only three tenths away from perfect? We don't get a difficulty score for that because it came down.
So that whole mount and dismount doesn't count.
So of the 17 inversion up and downs that we do, we only showed 'em 15.
So difficulty comes up if we hit the pyramid, and clearly execution comes up if we hit a pyramid.
Right? - Dang, son! - 'Cause wouldn't that be cool? This routine has the potential to score a nine nine, and not if you're perfect.
If you're 80%, that could be a nine nine.
I'm not just making that shit up.
I I was worried because of the the score deficit and then I read the score sheet.
These these scores tell me they want it to be you.
There's there's no way, with the way we executed, our raw score should should be where it is.
They want it to be you, but you gotta give 'em a reason.
It wasn't as bad as it may have felt when you got off.
Obviously, we had some mistakes that don't normally happen.
That won't happen again tomorrow.
What that means is staying focused on Trinity Valley, staying focused on the things that you're supposed to do.
Nothing else matters until we're done competing tomorrow.
We still got a mission.
And we're gonna we're gonna be focused on our mission, because when we go, we know that we did everything that we could.
You ready to go? You ready to get You ready to fix the mistakes? 'Cause you don't wanna feel like that tomorrow.
Mm-hmm.
Then we won't have a problem.
How many of you tumblers are ready for another shot at that floor? Yeah! I want my rounds with that floor! Dee said, "Me!" - Ready to go.
- Dee's ready.
Apply some pressure tomorrow.
Let's go! Hey, who was that guy that that touched down on his knees? - His Did you see his face? - Dee.
That's their best tumbler.
Did you did you see his face? Oh my God.
I I need to find how we actually look up scores.
- I guess this is just our division, huh? - Right here.
Yeah.
What were the scores? Overall score, we have a a 98.
3333 for us, which is also our score because we don't have any deductions.
- Yeah.
- And their raw score is a 97.
77.
And then they had 1.
75 in deductions, so they have a 96.
02.
So the scores are good.
You know, I feel like the judges usually score a little bit conservatively day one.
And then if you do well, if you hit your routine hard on day two, your scores generally go up.
So, I feel good where we're at.
Uh, you know, I That's a little confusing, but it's neither here nor there.
It's a subjective sport.
That's what you get.
It's cheerleading.
Yo.
- Okay.
Are we all here? - Yes.
Okay.
Y'all, be quiet.
So, I mean, there's things that we can nitpick, that we can fix.
The spacing on the ending structure of the pyramid we know needs to be better.
But I am so proud of y'all.
Like, y'all were phenomenal today.
And I always get really nervous.
Um So, per usual, I was nervous.
But as soon as y'all came out on that bandshell, I had this really calm feeling.
And I just knew, like I just knew from that moment as soon as y'all stepped out that it was gonna be great.
And it was great.
We have one more day, so we can't get complacent at all.
But we also don't want to overthink.
- One more practice! Whoo! - One more practice.
Okay.
- Um - One more practice.
One of the things I saw y'all talk about a lot today right before y'all went on was fear, um, letting go of your fears.
And one thing that we do, um, tonight is write down all your fears, and we are definitely letting those go.
We shouldn't even talk about letting We're doing that tonight.
We're letting go of all of those tonight.
This is the last time we're ever going full-out with this routine.
And this is the last time you're ever gonna do cheerleading with this exact group of people.
With that, we're choosing to keep going and we're throwing away all of our doubts.
Peace out.
And once these fears are gone, do not bring them into tomorrow.
Do not bring them into your future life.
Don't bring them anywhere.
Remember, they're gone.
And five, six, seven, eight.
RIP these fears! Hey! Bye-bye! I wrote down that my stunt would fall.
Like, I would be scared my stunt would fall.
And then I was scared I wouldn't perform enough.
I was scared that I wasn't good enough.
I was scared that if I were to do something that Monica and Kailee wouldn't trust me anymore.
And yeah.
That's it.
But now, all gone.
No more fear of that because I threw it in the ocean.
You feel better after letting those fears go? I mean, honestly, yes.
I know it's crazy to say, but yes.
Just kind of like they were right.
Like, they said, "Whenever this bottle gets let go, you feel like a new, clean person with no fears holding you back.
" "Nothing is holding you back from being great today.
" Yesterday was kind of like everyone had the nerves.
And then today is about, "Let's put on a show.
" Like, "Let's give the folks a show.
" Yay! Everyone get in there.
- Thank you! - Have a good day.
You too.
All right.
Let's go.
- La'Darius is coming today.
- Shut up.
- He called me last night.
- You're lying.
- Did you see his tweets yesterday? - Yeah.
- What did Landers say? - It's a long conversation.
He said the team hates him.
I said, "Look, I need to have a conversation and forgive him for my own self.
" Because I have this gaping wound that's just open.
- Yeah.
- And every day it affects me.
And until I can close it and move forward - You'll feel some type of way.
- It's just it eats me away.
It's go time.
Ugh.
Nervous is an understatement, fellas.
I can't do shit but watch.
All righty.
I'mma do this.
Let me see the braids My dad said, "Punch him in the mouth!" - Not bad.
- As we should.
We will! Hold! Hey! Y'all, listen.
Mistakes are fine back here.
Okay? You hear me? Mistakes are fine back here.
This is where you get all that out.
Ayanna, come here! This is where you get all the jitters out.
There's nothing wrong with y'all's stunt.
You guys have been hitting this.
We've hit our first four full-outs, zero deductions.
Y'all are just fine.
Don't stress.
Don't have it on your face.
Be pretty like you are.
Okay? There's nothing to worry about.
Nothing.
Y'all got it.
One, two, three, four, five! Seven, eight, one, three Push! Shit! One, three, four, five.

You now have that chance to do it.
Apply some pressure.
- We're gonna put some pressure on them.
- Yeah! Let's just put some pressure down.
All right.
- Hey.
I love you guys.
- Love you! There's not much else that we can tell say to each other that will change the outcome of what we're about to do.
We're gonna be great no matter what.
So, I've said it a million times, I'll say it again.
If you're not gonna do it for yourself, do it for the person next to you.
If you're not gonna do it for them, do it for the people that came before you.
- Here's to you! - Here's to you! - Here's to me! - Here's to me! - National champs! - National champs! - We're soon to be! - We're soon to be! - And if the world! - And if the world! - Disagrees! - Disagrees! - Forget them! - Forget them! - Here's to we! - Here's to we! Go.
Go.
CCFC! Doesn't matter what you did yesterday, it doesn't matter what you did three days ago, because we've hit this routine more times than we've messed up this routine.
So there's no reason that we can't go out there and do the best goddamn routine that we've ever done in our entire lives.
Have fun.
Embrace it.
We love this routine.
We love doing it together.
So let's go out there and have fun and embrace it! Because this is our last time! Don't worry about the awards! Don't worry about anything after that! Because all that matters is this is our last moment together to embrace everything that we've worked so hard for.
So take it in.
I love all of you with everything I have.
We're gonna fucking do the damn thing.
Got three things.
- We can! We will! We must! - We can! We will! We must! - We can! We will! We must! - We can! We will! We must! Let's get it! - Trust yourself and each other! - Hey.

Let's go.
It was good.
Good job! - I'm sorry! - It was fine! Hey.
- Good job, y'all.
- It's okay.
- It was good besides the thing.
- It's all right.
It's not the end of the world.
Remember, we were in a really, really good spot after day one.
The rest of the routine, by my guess, would be was good.
Okay.
Relax.
- It's okay.
- You're fine.
Breathe.
Good job.
Good job.
You're fine.
We're a team.
That's what, point two five? - It's only point two five.
- It didn't touch the floor.
It's point two five.
We're good.
Breathe.
Breathe.
It didn't it didn't touch the floor.
Let it go.
What are you doing? Came to see you guys perform.
Aww.
It's okay.
Hey.
Look at me.
Monica, it's okay.
Breathe.
It's okay.
It's gonna be okay.
You didn't have to be here.
It's okay.
I'mma always watch you perform and do your best.
Always.
I love you.
I love you too.
Okay? Come on.
Okay.
Hey.
It's okay.
All right? Okay.
Let it go.
Can we go this way? Your performance was good.
Good energy.
Y'all did great.
- I love you.
- Let it go, y'all.
Y'all did great.
Are you mad at me? - Gill, I would never be mad.
- Okay.
I don't care about what happened, y'all.
- We didn't eat the mat, did we? - No.
Besides that one thing, everything was smacking! The rest of the routine was amazing.
I felt it.
That being said, when we walked over there in front of the whole crowd, you act like you just hit the best damn routine of your life.
Thank you.
Because all the work we've put into this whole year, and some of us for two years, and we got nothing out of the first year, it's not worth having a bad attitude after we just did amazing both days.
- It wasn't.
- It wasn't that bad.
I love you, baby.
Uh-uh.
No, ma'am.
Oh my goodness.
Hey.
Hey.
Pick it up.
- You were fantastic.
- It's all right.
At the end of the day, it's fine, Gillian.
Andy said because it was a dismount, it might be counted as an omission.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
- Can I get a picture with you? - Yeah! She's a big fan, Monica.
Thank you! Hey.
Bring it in! Bring it in! By God, I hope I hope they call our name last.
I hope that's what's called, but I'mma be proud no matter what.
Y'all know I wanna win.
But no matter what, the performance that you guys just gave was all I ever wanted.
I didn't care about winning.
I want the win for you guys, not for me.
I don't need it.
This was your moment.
And you got to go and put on a show to everybody fucking out there watching that thought they thought they were better than us.
They thought that we couldn't do it.
They thought that we were not talented.
They think that we're the underdogs.
We've never been underdogs.
They can never compare to us and we've known that.
We just didn't do our job when we had to do it, but we did it today.
I'm pretty confident that's the best routine Trinity Valley has ever done in at least ten years.
- You guys - Nice going, y'all! Two people that have ever actually been on the bandshell, eighteen that have not, four rookie flyers.
What more could you want? I don't know where that score's gonna fall.
I don't care.
Best routine I've ever seen.
If I need to leave cheerleading forever right now, I'm okay with it.
Closed chapter.
Perfect.
Good job.
Oh my God.
I'm gonna fucking cry here.
Y'all are something special.
Oh my God! I'm so proud of you! Dee, I love you! Come on, baby Deb.
Hello, everybody.
Welcome to the 2021 NCA-NDA College Nationals Virtual Awards Ceremony.
My name is Justin Carrier and for those of you Before that, I wanted to remind everybody how the final score is calculated.
The preliminary score is worth 25% of the final score.
And today's performance is worth 75% of the final score.
- Yeah.
- We got a 0.
75 deduction.
It's not wrong.
If they get a 98.
5 today in raw and don't have any deduction, they'd still only score a 97.
88.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I know.
Yeah.
So they would technically have to get a nine almost a 99.
Yeah.
98.
7 something.
Do you think that they would really go up two points? They won't get that.
I dunno.
Judges can do anything they want.
Their raw could be that.
I think we're in a good spot.
They were damn near perfect today, man.
They were damn near perfect.
They were damn near perfect today, man.
NCA College National Championship.
Our next division is advanced large co-ed junior college.
Great job with these top two teams, amazing performances and routines two days in a row.
Here we go.
In second place with a final score of 98.
0708, Navarro College.
Oh.
And your 2021 NCA National Champion with a 98.
2292 is Trinity Valley Community College.
Let's go! Let's go! Let's go! Let's go! Whoo! Hey, y'all did amazing.
We are so proud of y'all.
We're proud of y'all! - We're proud of y'all.
- We love y'all so much.
- We're proud of y'all.
- We're proud of y'all.
All y'all did great.
Y'all did great.
Y'all did great.
Keep keep Ugh.
Keep the tears in, y'all.
Y'all got this.
It's okay.
Hey.
Yesterday, we scored a 98 96 96 96.
01.
Today, we scored a 98.
97! Zero! Y'all, put your chins up.
Y'all had a great performance two days in a row and y'all worked so hard.
You can't regret anything.
We put the work in.
Y'all, when you walk out of here, you cannot be disappointed in the work that we put in.
I'm telling you, we worked our tails off.
Mm-hmm.
We did everything that we could, but we all know it's cheerleading and things happen.
Be proud of the work we put in and the routine that we did.
Hold your head high.
That's ex how I expect you to act.
- Yes? - Yes, ma'am.
I just wanted to say I love you all and I'm sorry.
- It's good, girl.
- It's not your fault at all.
Look where you were last year.
You weren't even cheering.
And here you are.
You're cheering and you're here.
You did perfect.
And I know you're crushed, baby, but you come back with that adrenaline next year.
Okay? It wouldn't be possible, man.
You helped build the foundation, man.
You helped build the foundation.
- We got our ring, baby.
- Brought that shit home.
Pleasure, man.
Appreciate it.
- I told you I could get you one.
- Yes, sir.
I told you guys this was a 99 routine.
We were three one-hundredths away from a 99.
Be proud of yourselves.
- Because we're built different! - Let's go! Let's go get wet! Let's go! - Here's to you! - Here's to you! - Here's to me! - Here's to me! - National champs! - National champs! - We'll always be! - We'll always be! - And since the judges! - And since the judges! - Did agree! - Did agree! - We love them! - We love them! - Here's to we! - Here's to we! CCFC! Whoo! - May I take this off? - Of course.
Okay.
So good to see you.
Who's in here? Just me.
Are you okay with them filming us? I mean, we don't have to talk in front of the cameras.
- I'm okay with it.
- I just need this for myself.
Yeah.
So how's it been going? Honestly, I don't wanna cry Let me get some tissue.
I mean, honestly, I wake up sad every single day.
And I just have this big hole in my heart and it it won't go away and that's why I wanted to talk to you.
Like, I I feel like you're, like, a child to me.
And, like, that's It just really hurt.
I mean, do you really think that, like, I was abusive to you? Like, that just tore my heart apart.
When I think of our relationship I see you how you see me.
I see you as my mom.
Because I thought we were closer than that.
And throughout this past year, I felt like we lost sight of that.
Do I believe that you're abusive? No.
The reason I give people chances now in this world and in this life, from being as cold as I used to be, is because of you.
You're the only person that I feel like looked at me from when I was nothing, and you took me, and you made me something.
And you may not have taught me, but you showed me the way.
So when we were When I when I felt like you were not hearing me, I was like, "Monica, you gotta listen.
Like, you have to listen to me, 'cause I promise you I would never lie to you.
" Oh, Marshall.
Come here, listen.
And I really do hope you're doing well.
I meant that.
I'm getting there.
I'm making it.
And I don't want war with you or anyone.
I chose to forgive even though what I did was way harsher.
- I hope that you can choose to forgive me.
- I do.
'Cause I don't want bad blood between me and you.
'Cause this, when it boils down to it, had nothing to do between me and you.
I'm so sorry.
What's the cut-off date for early signing? - They gotta say yes by Doesn't matter? - No.
- Okay.
So even after May 1st - Yeah.
Even after we've taken a whole team and given away all our scholarships? - We're gonna sign these kids even though - May 1st.
May 1st, Franklin.
Okay.
Until ten days ago, I was only a a part-time employee at the college.
Now we're both head coaches, so I'm in the same, you know, back to what I was before I left.
It's nice to be full-time faculty again.
Um, I don't have to worry about having so many jobs.
I can kind of scale back and and focus on some other things.
Ouch! I can't swing that hard, man.
No.
Turn! - Boy - It's my go? You gotta aim! What you doin'? What I do, bro! You gave you bet me a dime! We're gonna toast up.
We're gonna toast up to Vontae for having an outstanding year.
Two big wins, and 2021, and my birthday, man.
Let's hear it.
Whoo! - Happy birthday, Frank.
- Happy birthday.
Congrats, bro.
I'm thankful for the path that I chose.
Maybe my life would be different if I went the other path.
Maybe I'd be a football star somewhere, maybe I wouldn't be.
I played sports all my life.
I was on teams where I had the best bonds with some of my cool coolest friends, but it was nothing like being here.
I didn't learn as much on those sports teams as I did being in this small little town.
I'm glad with the way things turned out.
And I was able to have this opportunity to be able to be where I am now.
And it's put me in places I didn't think I was gonna be.
So, yeah.
And so, when we get to chapter six, we're looking at a very famous story, it's about Joshua and the Battle of Jericho.
And as we look at it, you can't help but think all about victory.
And what do you think of whenever you think of victory? Maybe some of you think of when you ran the game-winning touchdown, or when you were in high school and you hit a walk-off home run to to win the game.
And victory should make us excited because we live in a world right now where it's easy just to to wake up and feel defeated.
And sometimes you can be so distracted by what's in front of your face that you forget about the greater story that's going on all around you.
Distracted by our relational problems, by the problems we're having at work, by our own emotions, by substances, by whatever it may be, and we get so distracted by those things that we fail to see that God has already won a victory for us.
You know, it's a it's a struggle and you're going through it right now, and that's part of living on this side of eternity.
But if you walk with faith, you can continue to trust that even though I'm dealing with something very difficult right now, there's a greater reality above me.
And I'm gonna live When you go through trials and tribulations, they're there for a reason, and they are there to help you grow to be better.
I've been praying a lot for just some clarity.
Just what lessons I'm supposed to be learning through all the turmoil from this year, and how I'm supposed to be growing as a coach, as a person, as a friend, as a wife, as a mother, as a teacher, all those things, you know, that that I'm, you know, constantly praying to be better at.
And so I pray, Lord, that You would remind all of us this morning, in our hearts and in our minds, that You would remind us there is a greater reality that supersedes everything that we experience.
We can claim victory even through the difficulties.
We pray it all in Jesus's name.
Amen.
Amen.
Y'all stand with me, if you would.
We're gonna sing a worship song.
Use this as an opportunity to deal with what the Lord is putting on your heart and in your mind.
You can do all things but fail 'Cause You've never lost a battle No, You've never lost a battle And I know, I know You never will Sing it out to God! You can do all things Yay.
Okay.
How long can you keep doing this? Um, I have no idea.
Every year, I'm like, "I can't do it anymore.
" "This is too exhausting mentally.
It's too draining.
" And then that new team comes in and that fire gets lit again, and I'm back in it.
So who knows? It'll suck you in, that dang cheerleading.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
I've always been, like, a closed-off person emotionally.
Like, I never really, like, opened up.
This sport changed me in the best way possible.
A few months ago, like, I was having trouble thinking how I won't have this again, or won't see some of these people for a really long time.
But I think it's time to move on, and time for a change, and to see what I could do somewhere else.
I'mma say the grace even though y'all eating.
God bless this food.
Bless the hands that prepared it.
Bless it to be good for our bodies, and our bodies for Your service.
Amen.
- Amen.
- There you go.
Sorry, God.
I been started feasting.
Devonte, once he got to TVCC, he really learned to love cheer, like, in a different kind of way.
You know, like, hanging out, practice, hanging out, practice.
That was his life.
He loved it.
Are you coming back next year? Yeah.
Just love cheer.
Now twist.
Okay.
I was always the loudest person in school 'cause I wanted people to see me.
That's why I always wanted to do cheerleading, 'cause that was how I was gonna get everyone's attention.
Because that's one sport that they couldn't do that I could, and that I could excel in and make a name for myself.
I miss those times.
I miss my team.
I miss my family that I called family there.
But I feel like we're definitely going our separate ways.
- All right.
Don't attack.
- That's not how that works.
- Don't attack! Oh, she's - She's looking at you! Can he, like No.
- Is he gonna bite my finger? It doesn't hurt that bad.
Aww.
In cheerleading, it is so competitive.
You're so hard on yourselves.
I mean, she was the only stunt that fell.
She kind of had a meltdown, but So, I immediately went over there.
I found her, and I was like, "You hold your head up.
You hold it high.
" Guess what? You're a very beautiful crier.
- You're very beautiful.
- Thanks.
I love living here.
I really do.
I like just Who doesn't wanna live with their best friend? You know what I mean? See? Stuck with this one.
I know.
I told her I told her she's not allowed to go back to Texas.
I don't know how I'm about to go back by myself.
Cheerleading, it's not everyone's future.
And so, I decided that I wanted to start my future now, where she still wants a shot at that ring.
I'll be returning to Navarro by myself without Cassadee.
You're welcome.
- Didn't we sit here once before? - The last time we were here.
- I think I might have sat you.
- All right.
Are you We can't order from you.
Can we? No.
I'm just a host.
- I just bring you here.
They do the rest.
- You did a fine job.
Thank you so much.
- What's your name? - Maddy.
- Thank you, Maddy.
- You're welcome.
From the second we finished Daytona, I was already texting Monica saying, "I already have ideas for next year.
" "Like, we're doing this.
This is gonna be great.
" It stinks, but when you get knocked down, you have to stand back up.
So, a few of us are coming back this year because we just want to have that win as a Navarro cheerleader.
I want to win Daytona as a Navarro cheerleader.
That is my goal leaving this college, and I'm not leaving until I do.
Well, when you're down on your luck And you ain't got a buck In London you're a goner Even London Bridge is falling down And moved to Arizona Now I know why Cheerleaders are together year-round, and so you develop this bond.
It's the greatest tribe.
And with everything going on as you get older, you work, taxes, people dying, you think back to a time when you're wearing that uniform that was carefree, that was fun, that just is joyful.
Best years of my life.
I wanna go home with the armadillo So hard to explain.
You're just all these individuals, this team coming to give you open arms and love, unconditional love.
This sport, it's emotional.
We're all brothers and sisters.
We care more about each other than ourselves.
I always felt like something was missing.
Cheerleading, you know, introduced me to that huge, like, family bond.
The relationships and bonds that are made because of how cheerleading works, it is very difficult for people to leave behind.
Creating a family, it's your family.
It's kind of made up for what has happened in the past.
I'm very thankful to have them.
The cheer floor will always be where I feel the most comfortable.
It's, like, all I do.
So, yeah.
It's made me, like, the person I am today, cheering.
I'm blessed to be able to do what I do.
I really just grasp it and don't ever take it for granted.
Sometimes I have dreams of it, like, "I have to do that.
Like, that's what I wanna do.
" To be home in a Texas bar I know when I go out on the stage, I can do the absolute most, and to be extra, and no one can tell me I can't.
I'd feel bad for people in their life who don't have a care and a love for something like I do for cheerleading.
I think my life would've been different if I didn't go to the gym to see what it was like to be a cheerleader.
I love my team.
I love the ones I coached.
I'll never want to replace them.
You just get this overwhelming feeling that they're all your family.
I mean, I hate to lose, but the feeling of losing, that's a motivation too, because you can remember that feeling of disappointment that you don't wanna experience again.
So it's just all about the feelings, that adrenaline, that dopamine hit that you get when you actually succeed in something.
Those feelings, that rush, that's what we all work so hard for.
That's cheerleading.
