Hudson and Rex (2019) s02e09 Episode Script

Bullet in the Water

1 Way hay And up she rises Early in the morning - Way hay - And up she rises Way hay and up she rises Way hay And up she rises Early in the morning Whoah! That sounds like gunfire! Everybody! Into the water! Now!! Take shelter behind the boat! Everybody okay? - Boone? - Yeah! - Cash? - I'm okay! - Damon? - Me too! - Niko? - Niko! Where's Niko! Niko! Oh my God, Niko! They shot Niko! They shot Niko! - Niko! - Guys, hustle hustle! Get his head above water! Let's go, partner.
- What do we know? - We've got two shots fired from the north side.
Target was the Men's Coxed Four rowing team.
Their cockswain is dead.
We've got a suspected sniper on the loose.
He can't be far.
Based on eyewitness testimony, two shots came from the north bank according to three witnesses on the south bank.
Yeah, the sniper shot at 5:30 AM.
The grounds keeper called it in.
Night patrols were already present on the road in either direction.
We have patrol units set up here, here, and here, with checkpoints surrounding the area.
So he's boxed in.
Yeah, so we hope.
Here, take this.
Don't worry.
It's just a precaution.
We've got the SWAT team moving in.
They're going to sweep the area starting at the water and moving up the hill.
What I want you and Rex to do is follow in behind them and see if Rex can pick up a trace of gunpowder.
Maybe he can also find the trail from there.
I'll drop you a pin of the approximate sniper position.
Should be a hundred metres up the path.
But you cannot move in until SWAT deems the area secure.
Sure.
What is wrong with this thing? That one's not yours.
Ah.
Quite the wakeup call.
Yeah, you're telling me.
Meet Niko Fermi.
Olympic hopeful in rowing.
He was only 21 years old.
Looks like a direct hit.
Yeah, right to the temple.
Severe cranial damage.
At least it was instant.
Do we have the bullet? Unfortunately, it's a straight through-and-through.
It likely went into the lake.
It's hard to give you much more without a full autopsy.
Only thing I can say is it's a hell of a shot.
Someone knew what they were doing.
And really wanted this kid dead.
- Everything just happened so fast.
- Yeah.
I know this is difficult, but You guys, did you see anyone? Or hear anyone? Think hard, guys.
It's important for the detective to know all the details.
Uh, he gunshots came from the south.
- You're sure? - Yeah.
We were going east.
And it came from our left.
Well, we have three witnesses that said that the shots came from the north side.
But you know, adrenaline can mess with your head.
We're just lucky that Adler's leadership instincts kicked in.
And stopped the shooter from taking out any more.
Or it already hit his target.
Why was he in the cox? Excuse me? Well, the victim looked like he was at least two hundred pounds.
Aren't coxes normally lighter? Our cox is out of town for the week, sir.
His grandmother died.
Sometimes during practice runs we put a heavier man in the cox.
It helps build muscle.
Well, who decides who the heavy man is? Hudson.
- We finished the sweep.
- Yeah? Get Rex over there while the scene is still fresh.
Hillside's been secured.
Rex and I are going to go find where the shots were taken.
But do me a favour.
If your boys think of anything else, - give me a call? - Of course.
- Rex.
- You mean shot.
Not shots.
There was only one.
I'm sure of it.
Okay, thanks.
Rex.
Okay, buddy.
Get the scent.
Track it.
What is it, pal? No, he couldn't have shot from here.
The sniper would have been seen, buddy.
Come on.
Yeah.
I should have known better than to second-guess you, buddy.
What if that second shot was an echo? - How do you mean? - All the witnesses that weren't on the boat said that they heard two shots.
But from where I'm standing the echo sounds louder than the initial sound.
That's not possible.
For acoustic energy to propagate - it must excite a certain amount.
- Not now, Jesse.
I know it's an auditory illusion.
But it sounds real.
If the witnesses heard that but focused on the echo that was coming back at them from the north shore We're looking in the wrong place.
Exactly.
The south side looks pretty wild.
See if anyone lives there.
Maybe they saw something.
Hudson.
We've got another witness.
Come on, pal.
Let's go.
Sabrina Cullen? - Detective Hudson.
- My sister just heard.
Her and Niko were quite close.
I'm sorry you lost your friend.
You were there this morning? Yeah, I came to the boat house for my morning run.
What time was this? Maybe a quarter past five.
Did you notice anything odd? No, not at all.
Everyone was here.
Who is everyone? All the rowers.
Niko, Boone, Cash, my brother.
Coach Reid, too.
I understand you heard the gunfire? Hey.
I thought it was a car backfiring.
But I had my headphones in.
So I just kept running.
Running where? Same place I run every morning.
On the south bank.
Along the waterline, then up the trail heading east.
Niko waved as he passed like usual.
Then 30 seconds later I heard the shot.
And I didn't even bother looking back.
You didn't know, Sabrina.
I know this is difficult.
But I need to know exactly where you were when the gun was fired.
I was part way through my run.
By the big stump, where it starts to get steep.
And this is important.
I need you to think very carefully.
Was there one shot or two? One.
Do you remember where you heard it come from? From which direction? Yeah, from the south.
The south? - Okay.
- The sister's statement also contradicts the other witnesses.
She heard the shots coming from the south side as well? Yes, but just one shot.
I suspect she was outside the echo chamber.
That would make her correct.
Speaking of which, there are people living on the south side.
Well, one person.
One dude.
Jerry Auchincloss.
You think you can you pin me the location? - Yeah.
Done.
- Thanks.
I'm going to check it out with Rex.
Easy, buddy.
I'm sure it'll be nothing.
Rex! Rex! Ah! This is Detective Hudson! SWAT's going to be here in a few minutes! Put your gun down immediately! Do you understand? I am done with you boys trespassing on my land! Well I'm not one of the boys! I'm an officer of the law! If you have an issue, we can talk about it in a secure environment! Shoot that dog and I will shoot you! Rex! Ughh! Rex! Ughh!! Stay down! Come here.
Hey.
Hey.
Be more careful next time, huh? Wait, hold still.
The bullet only grazed you.
You got very lucky.
Hey, do me a favour? Next time you decide to follow your gut, let me know.
You could've gotten yourself killed.
He's right.
If it wasn't for Rex Yeah, thanks, pal.
Well, our man's in custody.
Hi name is Jerry Auchincloss.
He's a Gulf War vet.
His gun? A .
357 Magnum lever action rifle.
It's perfect for long-range hits.
We suspected the shooter was high on the hills in the north.
So we assumed from that trajectory that the bullet ended up in the water.
But if he was shooting from the south side and he was lower on the waterline The bullet should've ended up on the north shore.
Rex was trying to tell me something earlier.
Now I think I know what.
Come on, pal.
Show us where the bullet is.
Alright, partner.
One more time.
Track it.
He's supposed to smell under the water? He'll find it.
The shooting was only this morning.
If the bullet is here, Rex should still be able to pick up traces of gunpowder.
What's he got there? The sniper's spent bullet.
Good job, partner.
This coffee tastes like swamp piss.
You got any sugar? You're not in a position to bargain, Mr.
Auchincloss.
And I don't take kindly to being shot at.
It needs sugar.
Three.
Please, I got a sweet tooth.
Why the rowers? Been here twenty years.
And never had a problem until them rowers.
Bad enough they disturb my fishing traps.
But then they took my hat.
Okay.
Look, I need you to identify for me the man you shot.
That's him on the end.
Right there.
Wearing all black.
Probably for all the sneaking around he does.
That damned thief! - You're sure? - Affirmative.
Come by this morning for my hat.
05:45 to the dot.
Can we forget the hat for a minute? Did you shoot Niko Fermi in the head today at 5:30 in the morning? Yes sir.
I was standing there, in the mud, smell of rotten fruit everywhere.
I put that sucker in my sites.
I pulled the trigger.
Bang! He dropped like a ragdoll.
I didn't see any mud.
- You're sure that that's what happened? - Sugar first.
Three.
Please.
Three.
No way this is our guy.
He could have put a bullet in you, Charlie.
After firing at least five times.
I don't even think he knew what he was doing.
Well, what does ballistics have to say? They haven't tied the bullet to the gun yet.
But they were able to extract some tissue from the bullet itself.
It was a match to Niko.
See? There you have it.
The guy's got early onset Parkinson's.
You saw his hands.
He could barely hold a cup of coffee.
It was a 300 metre shot at a moving target.
It is a bit fishy.
It's more than fishy.
He did this in a single shot.
Then he starts talking about mud and rotten fruit.
It was bone dry today.
I think I know why.
I pulled Mr.
Auchincloss's medical records from the military.
And, turns out he was discharged from the Gulf War.
Anyone want to guess why? I'll take PTSD for five hundred.
Bingo.
Yeah, he was traumatized by a kill shot he took on January 21st, 1991.
Let me guess.
It was during a nerve gas attack? Two for two! Yeah, how'd you know that? Discharge from nerve gas mimics the smell of rotten fruit.
So Jerry's been reliving his most vivid and horrible day.
He's still military.
- So? - So military is trained for details.
He thinks the coach stole his hat.
A lead is still a lead, Charlie.
So there was no hat-stealing incident.
No, there was.
Ten years ago.
I was a rower then myself.
It was part of our hazing ritual.
They made me steal his hat because Jerry drove us nuts back then.
He was always threatening to sue us for disrupting his fishing traps.
To think he held that grudge all these years.
Well, assuming he pulled the trigger.
You don't think it was him? Was there any friction between Niko and any of the other rowers? If there was they wouldn't tell me.
You are the coach.
Who was also once a rower.
What happens in the boat stays in the boat.
Why was Niko in the cox? Like I told you, for the weight.
You have to understand.
My boys are athletes.
All they care about is being their best.
Niko was an outstanding rower.
Why else would he have scored that scholarship? What scholarship? You know, I don't have all of those details.
But if I were you, I'd talk to Heather Whitlock, the Dean.
It's called the Ned Hanlon AFA.
Or Athletic Financial Award.
People like Niko wouldn't be here otherwise.
What do you mean people like Niko? Rowing is a rich kid's sport.
Niko grew up in poverty.
Scholarships help level the playing field.
Did that ever cause any friction? No.
Students at Heritage care only about excellence.
Niko was an exceptional rower.
Some groups like to cut down their tall poppies.
Not at Heritage.
But what if I told you the war vet might not be behind his murder? What is it? It's probably crazy.
Try me.
Niko had a difficult upbringing.
You should speak with his mother, Greta Fermi.
He was only a boy when it happened.
We were still living in Toronto.
I was working as a hairdresser.
Lorenzo was unemployed.
- Your husband? - Niko's father.
He said he was taking shifts as a labourer.
At night, he was gambling.
He put up all of our money and lost.
Found himself on the run from the mafia.
One day, Niko comes home from school and finds his father in the shed, shot in the head.
Both of them.
The same way.
This can't be a coincidence.
Mrs.
Fermi, I'm sorry that I have to keep pressing.
But did your son ever have an issue with gambling? Yes.
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
But the minute he picked up that oar, everything changed.
Everything changed.
He swore he was done with the gambling.
To think I believed him.
Do you think that any of this has to do with why your son got shot? He said he had a line on some money.
What else could it have been than gambling? No mother should have to bury her son.
Training already? I needed the distraction.
So this is the space where you guys once engaged in uh initiation rituals.
Yeah.
That was before my time.
Huh.
How can I help you, Detective? Did Niko ever mention gambling? No.
Why do you ask? Well, his father was killed over gambling debt.
It's odd he'd never mention that.
No, I mean Niko only ever cared about rowing.
What have you got, buddy? Is that blood? It's rower hands.
The calluses can get ugly.
Huh.
You're sure you never played cards here? - I mean, this would make a great gambling den.
- I mean, boathouse closes at nine.
Only Coach Reid has the keys.
Huh.
Any friction between Niko and the other rowers? No, why would there be? Well, you're upper class.
He wasn't.
A rower is a rower.
And Niko was the best of us.
Then how did he end up cockswain? That was a last minute decision.
Who made the decision? We flipped.
Niko and Damon's times were similar.
That's interesting.
Because I'm looking here.
And it says that Niko was consistently the fastest.
While Damon was the slowest.
Hey Damon? Want to wait up? Rex, go! He's not a big fan of impromptu jogs.
And neither am I.
Yeah, I'm going to need to see your fanny pack.
Yeah, you and I are going to need to have a little talk.
We matched the blood to Niko Fermi.
But then I suppose you already knew that, huh? It's not what it looks like.
So you weren't planning to row out into the middle of the lake so you could sink the evidence? Okay.
It is what it looks like.
But it's not what you think.
Then help me to understand how your best rower ended up in the cox and you ended up with a shirt covered in blood.
There's five of us fighting for four spots on that boat.
It was between Niko and I to take our turn as weight.
And neither of us wanted to do it.
- Why not? - Acting as cockswain means we don't get as much training time.
We need every edge we can get with speed trials coming up.
So to decide it, we played Put Up or Throw Up.
Uhh First guy to 500 metres on the rowing machine makes the other guy do a shot.
You keep going until I got the rest.
I regret the entire experience.
Niko was so drunk.
He couldn't even stand.
He face-planted.
And then, he busted his nose.
It was gushing everywhere.
He was laughing the entire time.
And that's how the blood got on his shirt.
Yeah.
And all made it for your morning row.
Yeah.
With Niko as cox.
That was the deal.
One thing I don't understand is why hide the evidence? Well, we didn't.
But then Niko got shot.
I thought it would look bad with the bloody shirt.
So I took it and I hid it in my dorm.
But Niko was killed on the boat.
There's no need to hide anything.
Why bother? It just felt like a bad omen.
Something doesn't feel right.
Niko and his mates partake in a hazing ritual.
And a few hours later, - a sniper takes him out? - Yeah.
It's hard not to think it's connected.
I'll tell you what I see.
A group of privileged kids taking out the runt of the litter.
The one who doesn't belong.
Stay with me for a second.
Everyone on that boat comes from old money, except for Niko.
For example, I looked into Damon's family.
Turns out, he's a Fairchild.
They've given over two million dollars to Heritage U.
You don't think it's mob-related? No, I doubt the mob would follow Niko all the way to St.
John's.
What's more likely is they did it themselves.
That's why they put him in cockswain.
It's the spot furthest away from everyone else.
So they hired a sniper to take him out? Feels reckless.
And we have no evidence.
Oh, maybe we do.
Check it out.
I got into the university's athletics data site so I could access the rowers' training logs.
Turns out they altered the route that morning only.
Their consistent routine is to train on the western route.
But that was changed on the day of the shooting.
So they could row past Jerry Auchincloss's house.
Take out the poor kid.
And frame a guy who has been a thorn in their side for years? Two birds, one stone? Whose call was it to change the route? Probably the coach.
Well I think it's time we rattle his cage.
Mmm.
There was a headwind.
That's funny because we checked your training logs.
And you've never changed routes - when there'd been headwinds before.
- Okay.
I'm not sure what you're implying.
- Besides, that was the cockswain's call.
- Yeah, you're the only one who knew about the history with Jerry Auchincloss.
- So? - So, you knew that the authorities would assume that he was behind the sniper hit.
Okay.
Are you suggesting that we staged Niko's hit and framed Mr.
Auchincloss? Yeah, Jerry still thinks he's in the military.
He claims that you were there at 5:45.
Maybe it wasn't to steal a hat.
But maybe it was to plant a gun that killed Niko at his house.
Okay, well, this is a university.
And not a gangster movie.
It is an understandable pressure.
A lot of money came from Damon's family.
Oh, this is about money now? Well, Niko was the better rower.
How else do you explain how Damon took his spot? I told you.
The boat decides that.
While I wouldn't even know how to handle a gun let alone make that kind of shot.
And I was at the docks.
And there are witnesses.
- And you know that.
- Then help me to understand.
No, I'm done helping.
Any further communication with me will be done through my lawyer.
Alright.
38 minutes.
- You beat me.
- You made the entire trek? Yeah, all the way from the sniper position to the boathouse.
What do we know about the coach's whereabouts this morning? Well, Adler's sister Sabrina placed him at the boat house exactly 15 minutes before the shooting.
Which is too short a window.
So it couldn't have been the coach.
Yeah.
Nor anybody in the boat.
If we're right about a conspiracy between coach and rowers There needs to be another player.
Okay, we're missing something.
Okay, well let's try this again.
So it's 5:15.
The rowers are on the water.
And they head east.
Due east.
Now, passing a groundskeeper.
Mm-hmm.
Woman with stroller Well, she doesn't really have a stroller, and a male jogger.
Okay.
And Adler's sister, Sabrina, who says that she was just starting the steep part of the path.
By the big stump where it starts to get steep.
Where did you get these figurines? Well, I mean And now, as the boat approaches Jerry Auchincloss's house.
They hear Whoah! The gunshot from the sniper position.
Right here.
Now, due to the echo chamber all four witnesses mis-identify the origin of the sniper hit.
- Three.
- Three? The sister, Sabrina, Sabrina says that it came from the south.
And swears she heard a single shot.
Which is odd, because, I mean, it looked like she was inside the echo chamber.
Mmm.
Can you read me her statement again? Yeah.
Okay.
You ask where she ran.
And she responded by saying: Same place I run every morning.
Along the water.
Up the trail heading east.
Niko waved to me as they passed like usual.
I heard the gunshot.
But didn't look back.
Niko waved as they passed like usual.
Yet they only altered the route that morning.
Which makes the sister a liar.
I didn't kill him.
Why am I here? I don't understand.
Why did you lie about where you were when the rowers passed? Look, if I got a detail or two wrong, I'm sorry.
I was worried for my brother.
You're an Olympic hopeful.
Yeah, many of us are.
You specialize in biathlon.
That's the one that combines skiing with sharp-shooting.
Is that correct? Yeah, well it was enough for a warrant.
They're searching your room now.
Did you know that gunpowder signatures can be traced back to the residue in a gun's barrel? And you're probably aware from your training with high-accuracy rifles that gunpowder doesn't come out when it's laundered.
So Rex will still be able to smell it.
I didn't kill him.
So you've said.
I didn't kill him.
I didn't kill him! I didn't kill him! - I - Yeah, I think you need some new material.
Like, I want to talk to my lawyer.
Looks like we have our shooter.
Rex was right about the gunpowder he sniffed out.
Yeah, it was on Sabrina's shirt.
And it's definitive.
She hadn't even bothered to launder it.
So Sabrina was the sixth member of the conspiracy.
The boys corroborated Sabrina's alibi.
And Sabrina corroborated the coach's.
I guess this is over.
I know that look.
What's going on? I hate to be the bearer of bad news.
But this isn't the slam dunk you're looking for.
Here, I got the autopsy results.
Sabrina wasn't lying when she said she didn't kill Niko.
Because Niko was already dead.
So Niko was already dead.
Freaks me out to think about it.
They took their morning row with a dead man.
And all of them knew it.
Well, at least we know why he was put in the cox.
So they went past all those witnesses on purpose.
All so they would verify that Niko was alive.
It explains the singing.
To draw attention to themselves.
And no one noticed that the fifth man didn't have a voice.
The whole capsizing of the boat was just a trick.
- An act.
- A cover-up.
Which means there's a whole other crime scene.
And I think I have an idea where it is.
I just can't believe Niko was already dead.
That's a gruesome revelation.
I'm going to need a list of all people who have keys to the boathouse.
It's a short list.
Just Coach Reid and myself.
When is it shut? - Nine o'clock sharp.
- Well, guards are easily bribed.
And as we've established, rowing is a rich man's sport.
I can't see Reid allowing boys in here to do a hazing.
He's as much against it as I am.
Does this look like it's been moved to you? I don't know.
Look at that.
A bullet hole.
They didn't haze Niko.
They shot him.
It wasn't a hazing ritual that you were covering up.
The blood didn't come from Niko's nose.
It came from a bullet wound in his head.
And we have proof.
Damon, right now, at the very best, you're guilty of Obstruction of a Police Investigation, Obstruction of Justice and Indignity to a Human Body.
And judging by your silence, I'm guessing that you're the one that pulled the trigger.
- No! - He was better than you.
And you wanted him out.
- No! - Then tell me who pulled the trigger! He pulled the trigger himself! Everything I told you was true.
We did play Put Up or Throw Up.
Just neither of us wanted to give up.
When did the gun come in? Somewhere around midnight.
We were both pretty drunk.
Who brought it? Niko.
He had an idea for a new game.
Something to settle the draw quicker.
Russian Roulette? I thought everyone was joking.
Everyone seemed so calm about it.
I just assumed it was a fake.
And then everybody started talking about the rules like it was actually going to happen.
And what were the rules? Spin the chamber once.
Point the gun at your head.
And pull the trigger.
Once and only once.
To show your ultimate loyalty.
And you didn't think of quitting? I beat out thousands of applicants for twenty spots in this school all for a shot at the Olympics.
It's all I've ever wanted.
Enough to let a friend die? I thought he would have given up.
And then he took the gun, and he pointed it to his temple.
And I tried to stop him.
I tried to pull the gun away from his head, but everything I touch, I make it worse.
Listen Damon.
What you're talking about right now is an accident.
Your charges would be relatively minor.
But here's the thing.
You would need to tell me exactly how all your teammates fit into this.
They're my brothers.
And brothers don't turn on one another.
I know about the Russian Roulette.
Damon told me everything.
You'd be smart to do the same.
Yeah, I don't think so.
You know, they say silence is akin to guilt.
You want that to go in my report? You do what you've got to do.
I'll take my chances in the court.
It's better to come from you than from Damon.
Damon isn't ratting out anybody.
You really want this to go to trial? No matter how this thing rolls, I'm going to turn up just fine.
Well, your sister is a different story.
We have her on multiple charges.
Her Olympic dream is over.
And that's on you.
I mean, talk and we can help her.
You wanted Niko out of that boat.
Didn't you? Hmm? We did conspire to get somebody off the boat.
But it wasn't Niko.
It was Damon.
One tenth of second, you know? That's enough to make a difference between being nobody or Olympic glory.
So we had to put our best foot forward.
And Damon wasn't your best foot.
He's good.
But the rest of us are great.
Especially Niko.
So when Coach Reid told us that Damon was a lock It meant that one of was going to be pushed out of the boat.
Right? Right before speed trials.
We needed to do something.
So you thought that you'd scare him into stepping down.
It had to be Damon's idea.
So Niko came up with a plan.
Niko? Wait.
This was Niko's idea? He had the trick gun.
When you spun the cylinder it always skipped the fourth chamber which was slightly discoloured.
Plus supposedly the bullet was fake anyway.
Then why did it fire? I don't know.
It doesn't make any sense.
Well, maybe you can help me make sense of it.
Where did you put that gun? None of this was my idea.
When my boss tell me Damon is a lock on the rowing team, I have to listen.
Well, that lock could have cost them their Olympic dreams.
You think I don't know that? I have been with those boys every single step of the way.
I watched them row until their hands bled and their bodies collapsed.
I wanted them to hit the Olympics even more than they did.
So you came up with a plan.
No.
No, I closed an eye.
And gave them the keys to the boathouse? They told me that they were going to scare Damon into stepping down.
I thought this was just some dumb hazing thing.
But then I get this panicked phone call.
And I show up at the scene.
I love those boys.
I loved Niko.
What happened then? I couldn't let this accident destroy the rest of their lives.
So I kicked into protection mode.
I knew a troubled war vet who would make a perfect fall guy.
But you needed one more.
No, I never would have involved Sabrina.
But Adler had already called her.
She'd do anything for her brother.
So she came.
She helped us clean up the mess.
And we came up with a plan.
Way hay and up she rises The boys would make their turn at exactly 5:30 AM at which point Sabrina would pull the trigger, missing wildly.
The theatrics on the water would be enough to distract while I ran back to Jerry's to return the rifle.
By planting the bullet with Niko's DNA on the other side we assumed our story would be airtight.
Yeah.
Last question.
Who made the call to put Damon on the boat? You have to understand.
Rowing is not like hockey or basketball.
It doesn't generate a lot of income.
It's one of our biggest sports.
In the Olympics.
That's every four years.
And brilliant rowers don't grow on trees.
It costs hundreds of thousands of dollars, which is where families like Damon's come in.
To help fund the sport.
Which pays for people like Niko.
It's awful to think I may have indirectly set this tragedy in motion.
Speaking of Niko, one thing I can't figure out.
Modifying a revolver so that it would only stop on the fourth chamber, that's an expensive undertaking.
How would someone like Niko get his hands on a gun like that? Maybe through his mob connections.
No, he didn't have any mob connections.
- Then I have no idea.
- I think you do.
See, I did a little bit of digging.
And it turns out, that Damon's family didn't just donate two million dollars to the university.
They also paid for his spot in the program.
An extra half-million dollars.
But it's not just him.
There's dozens of people at this school who've been given spots that they don't deserve.
That's a heck of a cash cow you've got there.
You have no idea what it costs to fund a place like Heritage.
Yeah, but Heritage never sees any of the money.
How do you explain that? I don't have time for this.
I think you'll make time.
Because we traced the serial numbers of that rigged gun back to a Montreal gun specialist.
And the payment came from a numbered account that belongs to you.
Even more interesting is Niko was told that when he spun the cylinder it would never stop on that fourth chamber, and that the bullet was fake.
But the bullet was real.
And the gun was rigged to always stop on the fourth chamber.
Niko told his mom he had a line on some money.
I think that was you.
Because he found out you were taking bribes.
He was squeezing you for money.
That's why he had to die.
Are you through, Detective? Because I think we're done here.
Not quite.
Just one last thing to say.
You're under arrest.
Thank you.
Hell of a week.
It's hard to think such a promising rower like Niko is gone because of greed.
Well, the world does tilt to the rich and privileged like Damon.
Well, Damon's as much a victim as everyone else.
He was devastated when he found out that his parents had bought his spot on the team when more deserving kids were denied.
Sounds like a bunch of talk to me.
It's more than talk.
He's putting up his own money to help fund the next generation of rowers in honour of Niko.
He invited us to the unveiling, actually, and Niko's mom.
I think he even reached out to Jerry.
It's hard to make a regatta from jail.
Actually, Jerry's in a rehab centre for veterans.
He's back on his meds.
He's doing quite well.
It's nice to hear a happy ending for once.
We're so lucky no one else got hurt.
Yeah, my bullet wound is healing nicely.
- Thanks for asking.
- Okay.
- I got shot.
- It was a graze.
- What? - A small graze.
Okay okay.
So This unveiling.
When is it? I know it's of little consolation, Mrs.
Fermi.
But at least you know your son never lied to you.
He never did fall back on gambling.
Actually, it means a lot.
Welcome, everyone.
Thank you all for coming to the kickoff and the unveiling of a new skull for a very special program in honour of a very, very special rower.
Next time on Hudson & Rex He was a big shot on the food and wine circuit.
He was killed in St.
Pierre and Miquelon the French islands off our coast, this morning.
Detective Valerie Bertrand reporting for duty.
- His name is - Paolo Rose.
You knew him? I'm a fan.
So I comped his meal and then he invited me back to his hotel.
The booze on that table is worth more than your house.
Some of these bottles, they're not real.
And you can tell the difference? That dog can.
Don't make this harder for yourself! Rex!
