[MOTOR WHIRS]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[BREATHES HEAVILY]
[SILENCE]
[SOLDIERS YELL]
- Contact front! Move!
- Move in!
Go, go, go!
[SOLDIER] Reloading!
- Garcia! 10 o'clock! Go!
- Move in!
[GRENADE THUDS]
- [WHISTLE BLOWS]
- [MAN] Game over, Garcia.
- Come on, it's a flesh wound.
- It's an F1 grenade.
Your insides are now on the outside.
- You're done!
- [SOLDIER] Way to go, Garcia!
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
[SOLDIER] Say hi to your mother, Garcia!
Gimme a break! I'm already
- [SOLDIERS YELL]
- [HIGH-PITCHED RINGING]
- Stop the
- Hold!
- What in God's name
- Stop!
[MAN] Medevac now!
Hang in there. You're gonna be okay.

Medic! Medic!
[DISTURBING MUSIC]
Corpsman! I need a corpsman!
[THEME MUSIC]
[INTENSE MUSIC]
Nothing says the Top End like
the warm embrace of the tropics.
Warm? JD, the air is sweating.
Well, Darwin's 12 degrees
south of the equator.
Three seasons, wet, dry,
and get me the hell outta here.
[EVIE] Think I'll go back to Sydney now.
Hell, no! This is where it's at.
- Fancy that. DeShawn is pumped.
- Why not?
An all-expenses-paid trip
to Australia's tropical north,
unspoiled beaches, cute critters.
You know, we should get jet skis.
We should get air con.
Is this your first time on the Top End?
You are gonna love it, kiddo.
What's top of your list?
Funny you should ask that.
Gunnery Sergeant Jensen, ma'am.
Welcome to Darwin.
Special Agent Mackey, NCIS.
Jim Dempsey, AFP. Good to meet you.
[JENSEN] Wish it was under
better circumstances, sir.
Base is at capacity
on account of the ceremony.
Hope you don't mind,
we've had to house your team
in field tents.
I lived out of
a shipping container at Bagram
for three months.
A tent will be just fine.
Doc, Blue.
- Get a temp HQ set up.
- All right.
Gunny, let's take a look
at the crime scene.
Oorah.
What's this ceremony?
It sounds very exciting.
Uh, Feb 19.
Commemoration of the Japanese
bombing of Darwin in WWII.
It's a very big deal up here.
Adding that to the list.
I'll get in the back. Yeah.
[BIRDS CHIRP AND SCREECH]
[WATER SPLASHES]
What's up? Can't handle the heat?
I was deployed in Afghanistan
in the height of summer.
I'm talking 120 Fahrenheit,
sandstorms, snakes.
Darwin ain't got nothing on me.
I can adapt to any environment.
[GROUND SQUELCHES]
Ooh!
- Evie!
- [EVIE LAUGHS]
Evie! [GRUNTS]
[EVIE] Ooh!
Uh
JD?
JD!
[JENSEN] There's your crime scene.
Some of the biggest tides
on the planet up here.
Up to 10 meters.
RIP, forensics.
Unless you brought your goggles.
Wouldn't recommend it, ma'am.
Box jellyfish will kill you in minutes.
Box jellyfish?
Yeah, then there's the Irukandji.
They're worse.
And don't even get me started
on the salties.
- The what?
- Crocs.
Being attacked by one
is like being hit by a car going
60mph, except the car has teeth.
Yay. So a tropical paradise
where you can't swim.
- Yeah.
- The hell is this place?
Survival of the fittest.
It is Darwin, after all.
Talk me through the exercise, gunny.
My Marines were launching
an amphibious assault.
The Australians were dug in
on the beach.
Why the live fire?
It wasn't, ma'am.
Rounds were blanks.
Ordnance was inert.
Except for the grenade
that killed Garcia.
Yeah, how did a live grenade
make it onto the battlefield?
Clearly, somewhere along the line,
it must have got mixed up
with the training one.
That's one hell of a mix-up.
Combat training exercises
are designed to replicate
the real thing.
Accidents are a tragic reality.
But this
You were in the field
during the exercise?
As a white cell, ma'am.
An observer.
I didn't see the explosion,
only heard it.
Where's DeShawn and Evie?
- [BASKETBALL BOUNCES NEARBY]
- [PLAYERS CALL OUT]
At least we can tick 'mud bath'
off the hit list.
It got into orifices
I didn't even know I had.
- [WOMAN] Oi, I'm open!
- [MAN] Yo!
[MARINES CALL OUT]
[MAN] Ooh! In your face, Aussies!
- Watch it!
- You wanna go?
You want some?
- [MARINES YELL]
- [WOMAN] Hey, knock it off!
As you were, Marines!
[MARINES] Yes, sir.
Sort of thing happen a lot up here?
Marine Rotational Force
means 2,500 Americans
on an Australian army base.
Throw in a little mango madness,
whole place is a tinderbox.
Come again?
Mango madness.
It's where the heat
gets under your skin.
You know, people become snappy,
tempers flare,
but the secret is stay hydrated,
breathable fabrics
and, you know, keeping cool.
Yeah.
Good to know.
[JENSEN] Either way,
Garcia's death hasn't helped.
Everyone's on edge.
Based on the fragments,
it looks like Mr. Garcia was killed
using a US M69 training grenade.
How? Trainers blow smoke.
No way they could do
that sort of damage.
Maybe someone screwed up,
filled it with real explosives.
Someone's getting fired.
Well, if that was the case,
we'd expect to find
residue from military-grade explosives
like TNT, RDX.
Instead, Mr. Garcia's covered
in potassium perchlorate,
aluminium and dextrin.
Homemade explosives.
Which means whoever packed the grenade
and took it onto that beach,
they weren't there to train.
They were there to kill.
[WOMAN] It's impossible.
There's no way I'd let a live grenade
onto a training course, ma'am.
- Everyone makes mistakes.
- Not me, ma'am.
Not when it comes to the lives
of these Marines.
[KEYPAD BEEPS]
- [LOCK WHIRS]
- [KEYPAD BEEPS]
[WOMAN] These are the training grenades
used in last night's exercise.
- All signed out by you?
- Yes, sir.
- And obviously you're one short.
- That's correct.
[MACKEY] And we're assuming
that's the grenade
that killed Garcia, right?
[WOMAN] No, ma'am,
I personally verified
that only M69 training grenades
were in this box.
Whatever killed Corporal Garcia
didn't come from my stock.
[JD] Well, I guess we'll see.
We're currently reassembling
the grenade fragments.
Gonna be awkward if it links
back here, won't it?
If it does, you can have
my stripes, sir.
[INTENSE MUSIC]
[TABLET BEEPS]
The exercise was filmed via drone.
The forces wore GPS trackers.
Pinpoints where everyone was
at the time of the explosion.
Fuse length of an American M69 grenade
is between four and five seconds,
giving us this throw radius.
Anyone inside it
could have thrown that grenade
that killed Garcia.
- How many suspects?
- Five in total.
Three Americans, two Aussies.
Well, hang about,
you said it was a US grenade.
What, are you somehow suggesting
now that an Aussie soldier
got hold of an American grenade?
Well, after-action reports
claims no one saw
who threw that grenade.
Just keeping an open mind, Sarge.
Yeah.
Roll it again.
[TABLET BEEPS]
[UNSETTLING MUSIC]
No one inside the blast radius
is running.
What does that tell us?
None of those men threw the grenade?
They didn't know it was coming.
Find out who was just outside
the blast radius.
Ah, see, that's why you
are in the big box, boss.
On it.
Hey, Evie, can we get the, uh,
background on the dead Marine?
[EVIE] Yeah, sure thing.
Corporal David 'Moneybags' Garcia.
Fancy restaurants, expensive toys.
A little outside the pay grade
of an E-4 corporal.
Who's the woman?
[EVIE] Maria Soares.
Darwin local.
Works for a regional aid organization,
Humanicore.
Huh.
[EVIE] Maria's also an active member
of the East Timorese expat community,
and almost certainly doing
the Top End tango with Garcia.
- Ah.
- Okay. Go make friends.
Humanicore mean something to you?
Just knew a guy who worked for
them a few years back, is all.
[DOOR CLOSES]
[DOC ROY] Come and have a
Captain Cook at this, will you?
Now, one side of Garcia's head
is peppered with shrapnel,
as you'd expect.
But over here,
there's a large contusion,
brown-yellow in coloration.
That's indicating the blunt trauma
he suffered a few days earlier.
A punch, maybe.
So Garcia was attacked
before the training exercise?
And by the looks of things,
he got a few in himself.
I'd be asking any of your suspects
if they've got bruises of their own.
[INTRIGUING MUSIC]
- [INDISTINCT CHATTER]
- [SEAGULLS CHIRP]
[MAN SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY OVER P.A.]
- Thanks!
- [VENDOR] Cheers, man.
Are you hungry? Shout you a croc burger.
Wait, first time you've
ever offered to buy me food
and it's that?
I just want you to have
the full Darwin experience.
[DESHAWN SCOFFS] I'm good.
Maria Soares, uh,
Special Agent Jackson, NCIS.
Got a minute?
[MARIA] David and I met at the markets.
[DESHAWN] How long ago was that?
Eight months, give or take.
Seem like y'all were tight.
We were planning a trip to
the States to meet his parents.
And you're East Timorese, right?
Yeah. We moved here when I was six.
That pre- or post-independence?
[SCOFFS] That depends who you speak to.
A lot of my people think
real independence
is still a long way off.
It's why I volunteer at the stall.
Maria, we took a look
at Corporal Garcia's socials.
Seems y'all like to party, huh?
Not much else to do up here.
Still, he really
splashed the cash, didn't he?
More rock star than Marine corporal.
- Do you know where he got it?
- [SCOFFS]
If he was involved in anything
illegal, it's important we know.
It'd really help our investigation.
Investigation?
He died in a training accident.
We're just looking at all angles.
Did Garcia have any enemies?
No.
Everyone loved David.
Except whoever got into a fight
with him a few days ago.
I don't know anything about a fight.
Look, I really can't help you.
That's fair enough. [SIGHS]
If you think of anything,
though, give us a call, yeah?
[UNEASY MUSIC]
[DESHAWN] You know she was lying, right?
[EVIE SIGHS] You know,
don't listen to the others.
You are gonna make a great cop one day.
[DESHAWN] Who's she talking to?
Angus Tipoloura,
a corporal in the Australian Army.
And one of the Aussies
on the battlefield with Garcia,
just outside the blast radius.
[MOTOR PUTTERS]
[DESHAWN] Well, I think Angus
just became our prime suspect.
[EVIE] Mm.
Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo, skimmer boats.
- Yech! Hard pass.
- Oh, right.
Yeah, you and swimming.
You know, honestly, up here,
you got nothing to worry about.
You fall in,
croc will eat you way before you drown.
Well, actually, they death roll you,
break every bone in your body,
then you drown.
But thanks for the pep talk.
Death roll?
[TENSE MUSIC]
[EVIE GRUNTS]
[INSECT BUZZES]
[GASPS] Bloody midgies!
Are you getting eaten?
Girl, midgies know better than that.
- Yeah, okay.
- No.
What are midgies?
[WATER SPLASHES]
[BIRDS CHIRP]
Helps them settle down.
What do you reckon, sis, you hungry?
Chili mud crab. Make you cry. Good way.
Only if you're interested.
A specialty of yours?
One of many.
- Mind if I take a look around?
- Go for it, bruz.
Just be careful of snakes, but.
[ANGUS LAUGHS]
How do you know Maria Soares?
Grew up together.
- You two romantic?
- No, nothing.
We're just friends.
So, which way, sis?
Chili mud crab and rice,
blachung on the side?
I'm not your sis, bruz.
I'm a cop investigating a murder.
Oh, okay, Officer.
Just being friendly.
I don't need friendly.
Someone was murdered on a beach
not three miles from here.
Hang on, I don't know anything
about no murder.
- Thought there was an accident.
- [OBJECTS CLATTER]
So did we.
At first.
Garcia seemed pretty flush with cash.
You know how he was making it?
No idea. Hardly knew the bloke.
Enough to fight him, though.
That's how you got the bruises, right?
If you haven't noticed,
little bit of heat up here.
Sometimes makes a bloke lash out.
Not a good look.
Seeing as you were close enough
to throw the grenade.
There was a lot of soldiers
there. You talking to them?
- They didn't have a grudge.
- No grudge here.
[OBJECTS CLATTER]
[EVIE] More mud crabs?
Not exactly.
Potassium perchlorate,
aluminum and dextrin.
The exact same ingredients as in
the grenade that killed Garcia.
[TENSE MUSIC]
[JD] So, Maria learns that
Garcia's been murdered,
and you're her first call.
Why is that?
She was freaked out. I was
consoling her. She's family.
Right. You'd do anything
to protect your family, right?
[MACKEY] Who did Maria
need protecting from?
Was it Garcia?
Or something he was involved in?
Well, maybe Maria put you up to it.
- I didn't kill him, all right?
- [JD] Really? Okay.
'Cause this is what
your explosives did, mate.
[SCOFFS] I'm being set up.
- By whom?
- How do I know?
Isn't that your job?
Look, I'm an Aussie grunt.
You pin a Marine's murder on me,
I go back to that base,
I'm a dead man.
So help us not charge you
with murder, then, mate.
[DOC ROY] Is it hot enough for
you, Bluebird? Oh, put it away!
I'm just running a brute-force
attack on Rankin's thumb drive
to try and crack the encryption.
[DOC ROY] He's in a coma
and you're on holidays.
It can wait, Bluebird.
[BLUE SIGHS]
- Ooh!
- I like that tattoo.
Oh, thanks.
It's, um, it's just something
that my my brother drew.
[DOC ROY] Oh.
Didn't know you had a brother.
What's his story?
I don't know, to be honest. We, um
- We haven't spoken for a while.
- Oh, fair enough.
Hm.
[POIGNANT MUSIC]
- Rosie, can I ask a favor?
- [DOC ROY] Mmm?
When we get back to Sydney,
there's something
..I need you to have a look at for me
..in a professional capacity.
Of course. Whatever you need.
All right, so
..what do we do now? [CHUCKLES]
Gonna try and find out where
that million-dollar barra is.
- Million-dollar whatta?
- Barramundi.
Every year, they tag
a healthy young barra
and then they release it out there,
somewhere off the waters of Darwin,
and whoever catches it wins
- Wins a million dollars?!
- No, no, it's more than that.
It's a moment in time that can
..define a person's legacy.
A place
A place in the history books.
- And a million dollars?
- And a million dollars, yes.
Wow!
You know, Bluebird
- No.
- It's only one cast away.
I can't. I will mess it up.
Come on. That's the beauty of fishing.
You can't mess it up.
Okay.
[BLUE] Okay.
[WATER SPLASHES]
Or maybe you can.
[CLICKS TONGUE]
[INTENSE MUSIC]
Take him inside till things settle down.
He's public enemy number one right now.
[DESHAWN] You got it, boss.
[JD] I don't know about this, Macka.
[MACKEY] Come on. It holds.
Overprotective former boyfriend
doesn't like the flashy new guy
and all of his American dollars.
Toss in some mango madness,
you got yourself death by love triangle.
Crimes of passion
are spur of the moment.
This took planning.
You know, my gut says
Angus is telling the truth.
Or he's using a US grenade
as the perfect misdirect.
Get us looking at the Marines,
keep the Aussies out of the frame.
Okay, how does an Aussie grunt
get hold of a US grenade?
That's what we're here
to find out, isn't it?
[THUNDER RUMBLES]
I'm gonna head back. [CLEARS THROAT]
See if I can find a shirt that
isn't wet-through before dinner.
You coming?
You go.
I'm having dinner off-base.
All right, no worries.
- Catch you later, then.
- Yeah.
[THUNDER RUMBLES]
[THUNDER CRACKS]
[MAN] Just through here, ma'am.
- [EVIE] Thanks. Won't be long.
- [ANGUS] Sorry about before.
I wasn't trying to style up
with you, nothing like that.
Yeah, you were.
Maybe a little bit. Can you blame me?
[DISTANT THUNDER RUMBLES]
Help me out with something?
'AT'.
'Angus Tipoloura', yeah?
And 'MS' is 'Maria Soares'?
So not just friends, then.
[ANGUS] Oh, Maria?
- [EVIE DRAGS CHAIR]
- Hey, it was a teenage crush.
She's mates with my little sister.
She's like my sister.
Either way, that's what the fight
with Garcia was about, right?
- Not the way you're saying it.
- Then what was it?
Garcia got Maria involved in something
and, what, you were just
looking out for her?
Look, I didn't kill him,
I'm telling you.
Yeah, but if you did, you would
tell me, wouldn't you?
Well, probably not, I suppose.
But I reckon you could get it
out of me one way or another.
Look, I tell you what,
when you find whoever killed Garcia
and I get off the hook,
you, me, chili mud crab.
What do you reckon?
Yeah, go on, then.
Extra blachung, eh?
[DOOR OPENS]
- [MAN] Payback time.
- [WOMAN] Payback's a bitch.
[THUNDER RUMBLES]
Can I help you fellas?
Wanted to have a chat with
your Aussie friend in there.
Yeah, he's not really
taking visitors right now.
[MARINE] Not surprised.
Word on the street is
he killed one of ours.
Come on, bro, we won't stay long.
You will if you ask again.
Then you can join him inside.
Nice and cozy.
- What do you say?
- [MARINE] Hmm.
[MAN] Yo, let's kick it.
We'll be watching.
Look at you,
going all Wyatt Earp on me.
Suits you.
[MACKEY] The bar was closing.
[FRENCH ACCENT] Oh, Michelle,
I I should have called.
You think?
I haven't seen you for six years
and you stand me up
at the Darwin Trailer Boat Club?
Look, Port Moresby, it's flooding.
We are only halfway loaded
and racing the tide.
I'm I'm so sorry.
Can you forgive me?
How long before the tide turns?
So I guess they figured
I couldn't do too much damage
all the way down in Sydney.
I hope you proved them wrong, huh?
On my best behavior.
It's actually been kinda great.
Sorta home away from home, you know?
If you say so.
- What's that supposed to mean?
- Nothing, it's just, uh
[EXCLAIMS IN FRENCH]
When I first met you,
you were flying helicopter
and sleeping in a tent in the desert.
Now you are what, a policeman?
Well, you can talk.
You are the CEO of a big company
and yet here you are
hauling bags of rice at midnight.
- You're really kicking ass too.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah, touché.
Ah.
It's a sign.
What does the sign say, exactly?
[ANTHEMIC MUSIC]
[VEHICLE ROARS OUTSIDE]
- [TIRES SKID]
- [HORN HONKS]
- [ENGINE STOPS]
- [BIRDSONG]
You up early or in late?
Why, you keeping tabs?
Nah. I wouldn't dream of it.
Correct answer.
[AWKWARD MUSIC]
[EXHALES]
Well, you want to go, uh,
take a look at the crime scene again?
Sure beats whatever this is.
[MACKEY CHUCKLES]
So, the boats landed there,
and then Garcia made his way
up the beach
and was here when the grenade exploded.
And Angus was positioned there
in the scrub.
So, what's that, about a 20-meter throw?
Well, distance isn't the problem.
How's he gonna throw through all this?
He's a Top End soldier.
Breed 'em tough up here, mate.
Ooh.
Okay.
Okay, Tom Brady, find the end zone.
[GRUNTS]
- You missed.
- [JD] Yeah.
- Whoa, whoa, whoa.
- [MACKEY] It's fine.
Just 'cause he couldn't have
thrown the kill shot
doesn't clear him from having
the bomb ingredients.
Macka
Maybe Angus had a co-conspirator.
Macka. Macka!
- What?
- [CROCODILE SNARLS]
[JD] Behind you!
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[MACKEY] Oh! Oh!
You could have warned me.
Oh, no, you're right, that's my bad.
[CROCODILE GROWLS]
[MACKEY] Could a croc get up here?
[JD] I vote we don't find out.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[EXHALES SOFTLY]
Congratulations, Bluebird.
Your first holiday jigsaw.
Now, next tip for you
is how to drink beer in this climate
before it goes hot.
- [DOOR OPENS]
- You drink it fast.
Hm! How about a lemonade?
[MACKEY] How about a batch code?
[BLUE] Yeah, coming right up.
[DOC ROY] You recovered from
your croc adventure?
I thought Steve Irwin would know better.
Blow it our your arse, Doc.
[CHUCKLES]
Wow.
Sounds like he's been touched
by the mango.
I haven't been touched by
Mate, you do sound a bit snippy.
I'm not, okay?
I'm just a little bit hot.
And bothered.
And bothersome,
if I'm being completely honest.
Oh, sorry.
Bingo.
I got the batch code
and we can trace the grenade.
I don't understand.
- So it is one of yours?
- Was.
It's US Marine issue,
but it wasn't part of the batch
that was used in the training exercise.
It's logged as already
having been decommissioned.
How's that possible?
They get earmarked
to be shipped back to the States
to be de-milled.
Who signed off on it from this end?
[WOMAN] One sec.
[JD] Who was it?
Uh, Corporal David Garcia.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[DESHAWN] This is Garcia from last week.
Looks like we just found where
Garcia picked up his extra cash.
Yeah, sweet side hustle too,
stealing ordnance
he was in charge of destroying.
Hm, including the grenade
that destroyed him.
Which tells me he's most likely
not acting alone.
What are you thinking, then?
Business partnership goes bad,
someone gets scared,
tries to cover their tracks?
Someone as in Angus?
No honor among thieves.
[DESHAWN] I'm pulling records
of everything
he was tasked with destroying.
If he's taken other stuff,
there's a chance we can track it down.
[MACKEY] Who assigns
decommissioning duties?
[DESHAWN] According to Jensen,
it was done randomly
among the Marines, you know,
names in a hat type of thing.
- [SOFTWARE BEEPS]
- Might have something.
I've been going over
Garcia's phone records
from the night of the theft.
Garcia made a call
30 minutes after he left
with whatever was in those boxes.
Who to?
[SCOFFS] Say hello to the pointy end
of our love triangle.
She's a logistics officer at Humanicore.
[MACKEY] A weapons thief
and a woman with international
shipping access.
Match made in heaven.
[VEHICLE RUMBLES]
[ENGINE STOPS]
[ETIENNE] Michelle!
Etienne.
Good to see you again.
- Ça va?
- Ça va.
- Mm. Mm.
- [ETIENNE] Mwah.
- I'm good with a handshake.
- Ah, you must be JD.
Etienne Cabrel. Enchanté.
Michelle, she's told me
all about you, huh?
Oh. Bonjour. Has she?
Etienne and I are old friends.
First crossed paths in Syria, 2013.
Yeah, I was based in Damascus
with Médecins Sans Frontières.
Etienne's team were captured
by insurgents
and I was part of the rescue op.
Yeah, she came under fire
while trying to save us.
- I'm only here because of her.
- Oh, he's exaggerating.
Ah, ouais? Show him your scar.
I stitched her up while we
waited for the exfil team.
With mint-flavored dental floss.
The scar's still a little green tinged.
[LAUGHS HUMORLESSLY] Super fascinating.
Let's park the health check, shall we?
I'm sure Michelle here
has mentioned that we're here
under a murder investigation.
[CHUCKLES] Yes, of course.
Please, this way.
Great.
I think I recognize his cologne.
Eau de too much.
[HQ DOOR OPENS]
- [DOOR CLOSES]
- [DOC ROY SIGHS]
Everything okay?
[SIGHS]
Oh, Blue, I You
[BLUE LAUGHS]
That barra's got your name
written all over it.
Ooh! [CHUCKLES]
- Thank you.
- [BLUE] Hmm!
[SOFTWARE BEEPS]
- [BLUE] Ooh.
- Ah.
It's a graphite composite.
Didn't muck around, did you?
Cheese and rice!
Huh? What is it?
[BLUE] I think I've just cracked
Rankin's thumb drive.
Huh. If only I spoke legalese.
You guys go all the way
into the Malacca Straits?
[ETIENNE] Yeah, we go
wherever we are needed.
There's more pirates up there
than anywhere else on the planet.
How do you avoid them?
We don't. We usually
come to an arrangement.
You pay them off?
How else are we meant to get
aid shipments into their ports?
I can tell you don't approve.
Well, yeah, I'm a cop,
so we're generally not big
on paying bribes to criminals.
- Jim
- Nah, it's fine, Michelle.
I understand your partner's
point of view.
And in a perfect world, I agree with it.
But this is not a perfect world.
Look, we're tracking two boxes
of stolen military munitions.
We believe they were transported here,
most likely bound for Timor-Leste.
- [ETIENNE] Hmm.
- You don't look too surprised.
Why would I be?
We spend all of our budget
on aid and logistics.
There is no line item for security.
Okay, if the weapons
were transported here,
any idea where they might be now?
[CLANKING]
[DOOR CREAKS]
[MACKEY] Wouldn't have
a lock pick, would you?
Nice.
[CROWBAR CLANKS]
[MACKEY GRUNTS]
Okay, there's one box.
- Where's the second?
- How about we ask Maria?
[JD] You let an arms smuggler
into an international port.
I let my boyfriend in
so we could watch the sunset.
Oh, and then smuggled arms?
What are you talking about?
Those M16s we just found.
They were earmarked for East Timor.
You have connections there, right?
I have family.
Hm. Including your cousin
with ties to a militant group.
We made some calls.
Where's the second box, Maria?
I don't know anything about any boxes.
Come on, there are stolen US-issued M16s
in a shipping container
under your control.
- What are we supposed to think?
- I don't know.
Well, it's either you or David,
or you and David.
So which one is it?
David, he
He was interested in
the struggles of my people,
the freedom fighters.
He just wanted to speak
to someone on the ground.
Someone like your cousin?
Did you suggest Garcia
get in touch with him
or did he ask you?
He asked me.
What?
You think that he
was planning this all along?
That he used me?
- [PHONE BUZZES]
- He loved me. I loved him.
He wouldn't.
- He wouldn't.
- D.
[DESHAWN] I've gone through everything
Garcia signed off on
to be sent Stateside.
There are no more boxes missing.
Okay, that's good news.
But I am looking at
a third box here that doesn't
contain what it's supposed to.
[JD] Meaning?
Meaning someone must have
swapped out the contents.
- [MACKEY] What's in it?
- M16s.
What's supposed to be in it?
A Stinger.
As in a Stinger missile?
As in the type that takes down
passenger jets.
[INTENSE MUSIC]
So Garcia steals two boxes
of old weapons to ship to East Timor.
Both are marked 'M16s',
but the contents of one box
has been swapped out
for a Stinger missile.
- Why?
- The Stinger's worth more?
Maybe, but why swap the boxes?
They're gonna be destroyed
anyway. No one's gonna know.
Maybe Garcia didn't make the
swap. Maybe it was someone else.
Why?
To make Garcia an unwitting mule
to get the missile off-base?
Yeah, then Garcia pops the box,
finds a Stinger, panics.
Because he's smuggling M16s,
not a surface-to-air missile.
He wants nothing to do with that,
doesn't want it getting
in the wrong hands.
So he hides it.
When this other guy comes to collect,
no missile.
And Garcia pays the price.
[JD] Okay.
So who's the other guy?
The only other person
Garcia called that night
other than Maria was Angus.
Find out what he knows.
Come on, JD.
You wanted a business partner.
Angus fits the bill.
How?
Whoever swapped the Stinger
had to have access to the decom room
and be able to guarantee that
Garcia was on duty that night.
That's not Angus.
Well, who, then?
Jensen said assignments were random.
- [MACKEY SIGHS]
- [SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
Are these the vests
from the training exercise?
Yes, ma'am,
from the men who caught frag.
Our records show that only
three Marines were hit.
Why are there four vests?
Names.
- [JD] Who is it?
- Jensen.
He said he was nowhere near Garcia.
If his vest took frag,
that means he had to be
inside the blast radius.
But he didn't show up
on the drone footage.
Because he was a white cell.
Which means he wasn't
wearing a GPS tracker.
And he could have thrown the grenade.
Son of a bitch.
[INTENSE MUSIC]
Gunnery Sergeant Jensen,
Special Agent Mackey, NCIS.
Open the door now!
[DOOR BANGS OPEN]
Get onto Jensen's CO.
See if he knows where he's at.
[LINE RINGS]
[RATTLING]
[PHONE BUZZES]
- [PHONE CLICKS]
- Hey.
[VEHICLE DOOR SHUTS]
Okay. So I made a few calls,
as you asked.
Now, this is strictly between us, huh?
These are very dangerous people.
It cannot come back to me.
It's in the cone, I promise.
Okay, so
..I put in a call to a fixer
I work with in Sumatra.
Now, the word is
that US military hardware
has been found in the hands
of a local Mujahideen group.
It's assault rifles, body armor.
How did they acquire them?
A regional arms dealer.
He's known as the Bald Eagle.
- Thank you, Etienne.
- Yeah. Please forget it.
I mean it, huh?
[PHONE CLICKS]
- [UNIT RATTLES]
- [JD EXHALES]
- [JD EXHALES]
- [UNIT STOPS RATTLING]
Fire in the hole.
The missing training grenade.
Jensen swapped it out, killed Garcia,
then planted the bomb
ingredients at Angus's place.
Framing him.
The corporal's been signed out, ma'am.
What do you mean, he's been signed out?
A senior Marine staff NCO came by
and said he's using Corporal
Tipoloura on a working party.
Give me a name, Sergeant.
I'm not authorized to disclose
It was Gunnery Sergeant Jensen,
am I right?
[TENSE MUSIC]
[EVIE SIGHS]
Sentry at the gate reported
Jensen left 30 minutes ago,
heading south.
So Angus must have hidden the Stinger,
for Garcia.
Yeah, somewhere Angus knew.
Where?
- The marina.
- [MACKEY] Left or right?
[EVIE] Left.
[MACKEY] How we doing, Blue?
I've isolated a 15-mile radius
around Darwin,
tracking all boats,
so it's only a matter of time.
[MACKEY] Which we don't have. Find him.
Talk to me, Blue!
[BLUE] Got it.
Okay, boat on the move, approaching
..Angus's house.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC CONTINUES]
[DESHAWN GRUNTS]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC CONTINUES]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC CONTINUES]
Oh, my God.
Angus?
[EVIE] Oh, my God.
Couldn't resist, eh?
[EVIE] Shh.
Still some chili mud crab there
if you
Don't talk, don't talk.
You're gonna be okay.
- [SOMBER MUSIC]
- [BOTH BREATHE HEAVILY]
[SIGHS] I just need you
to apply pressure.
- [ANGUS BREATHES HEAVILY]
- You're right.
I'm just gonna go to the boat.
Get the first aid kit.
- I'll be back.
- No, no, no, no, just
Just stay.
Just stay.
Okay.
Okay.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
Hey.
Must have hidden it in the river.
[JD] Jensen.
Where's the Stinger?
[JD] Evie? Hey!
[RUNNING FOOTSTEPS]
He kept saying he had nothing
to do with it.
He was in our custody.
They shot him in the back.
This is on us.
[JD] Hey. Listen to me.
We are just doing our job.
You understand?
Yeah?
You want to blame someone,
you blame the coward
who put a round in his back
when he was running away, yeah?
- [EVIE SNIFFLES]
- [JD] You good?
[SNIFFLES] Yeah, I'm good.
[JD] Good.
'Cause our shooter's now got
a surface-to-air missile
with a five-mile firing range.
[MACKEY] Bad news for any VIPs
arriving by plane
for the Feb 19 commemoration.
Which is all of them.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
