Mission: Impossible (1988) s02e11 Episode Script

Deadly Harvest

[ machine whirring, beeping .]
I knew I'd find you here.
Laurel, I'm sorry.
I got carried away and forgot the time.
- It's Sunday, Jared.
- [ phone ringing .]
I mean, if I can't stop you working on the weekends, then I'll join you.
Hello.
I am anxious to learn of your progress.
I have completed the final experiment, and it is deadly, Jouseff.
More deadly than you or I ever imagined or hoped.
My faith in you over the years has been rewarded, Jared.
I had a little expert help.
JOUSEFF [ through phone .]
: Very good.
Now, listen carefully.
I want to use the virus before the wheat season ends.
You must return immediately.
Jared? Yes, I cannot talk right now.
[ gasps .]
You lied to me.
All these months! All our research! You had no intention of handing it over - to the university.
- Laurel Why, Jared?! We made a good team, you and I.
[ gasps .]
You fool! [ screams .]
No.
No.
No.
[ machine humming, beeping .]
[ screaming .]
[ screaming continues .]
[ theme music playing .]
You know, the early explorers in Africa thought the giraffe was a cross between two other animals.
Well, the ancient Greeks called it the cameleopard.
Neck like a camel, spots like a leopard.
Right.
There's more information on the sign board.
is Jouseff K.
, Minister for Science and Development in the country of Orambaq.
K.
Is a terrorist who has formulated a blackmail scheme directed against the United States, which he believes will ingratiate him with his rulers and make Orambaq feared throughout the Western world.
Jared, a protege of K.
, had worked for several years in Orambaq developing a virulent, genetic virus capable of destroying a nation's total wheat harvest.
He came to the United States seeking advanced technology, and found it with the unsuspecting help of geneticist Laurel Taylor.
She is now dead.
K.
's plans to release the virus into the American wheat belt were temporarily thwarted by a laboratory fire which left Jared horribly disfigured.
He is now recovering in a Washington D.
C.
Hospital, after having undergone extensive plastic surgery.
Your mission, Jim, should you choose to accept it, is to destroy this insidious project at its base in Orambaq.
As always, should you or any of your IM Force be caught or killed, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions.
This disk will self-destruct in five seconds.
Good luck, Jim.
[ rapid beeping .]
PHELPS: With Laurel Taylor's unsuspecting help, Jared was able to turn wheat seeds like these into deadly carriers of his virus.
These were found clutched in his hand after the fire.
How deadly is the virus? Just one carrier seed planted in a healthy wheat field will infect and destroy the entire crop.
When the black seeds germinate, they release the virus, and it affects the cellular structure of all the other wheat plants, making them vulnerable to ultraviolet light.
And the sun does the rest.
Right.
NICHOLAS: Now, if K.
's plan were to succeed, there wouldn't be a grain of wheat harvested in the United States for the next 30 years.
So we have to destroy these virus-carrying seeds.
Exactly.
But first we have to make sure that all Jared's research has been eradicated.
To do that, we have to get into his laboratory in Orambaq.
What's the security like? A nightmare.
It's in the middle of a military compound.
With K.
's help, it may not be as difficult as we think.
He's on his way to the United States right now.
He's come to get Jared out of the hospital and take him back to Orambaq.
We're gonna have to move fast.
The wheat sowing season is very close.
SHANNON: Well, we've managed to keep Laurel Taylor's death a secret, so I can replace her.
Jared and I are the perfect couple.
That's exactly what we want Mr.
K.
To think.
All right.
I've anaesthetized Jared.
- He's ready to be moved.
- Good.
We've got 30 minutes before the real surgeon makes his rounds.
Nicholas.
Yes? I've built a micro-camera into these frames.
Along with a miniature transmitter.
While you're wearing them, everything you look at will be sent back to us.
They have a transmission life of about four hours.
A little heavy, but they're okay.
Oh, well, not much.
I don't have the time.
PHELPS: Jouseff K.
He's here.
He's early.
WOMAN [ over P.
A.
.]
: Dr.
Carlyle to the heart ward.
Dr.
Carlyle to the heart ward.
- Dr.
Walt Stein, pediatrics.
- Excuse me.
Dr.
Walt Stein, pediatrics.
He's on the floor and coming your way.
Right, Max.
Mr.
Jared's room.
Just down the hall.
I wish to see Mr.
Jared.
I am sorry, sir.
But visiting hours aren't until 3:00.
I have come halfway around the world.
Are you a family member? Yes, I am family.
Have his wounds healed? I am Mr.
Jared's plastic surgeon.
I think before you see him, we should talk.
WOMAN [ over P.
A.
.]
: Nurse Donaldson to hydrotherapy.
Nurse Donaldson to hydrotherapy.
The extent of his injuries was horrific.
Oh.
My God, I had no idea.
Advances in laser surgery, as well as new techniques in grafting and the development of regenerative drugs, has taken plastic surgery into the 21st century.
You have not answered my question.
You don't seem to understand.
I had to rebuild this man's entire face.
He had extensive muscle as well as nerve damage.
His speech could very well be affected.
His bandages can come off tomorrow, but he won't be discharged for a week.
That is too long.
Ah, Jouseff.
- Jouseff.
- Jared.
[ both laugh .]
As you can see, the worse for wear.
I think I'll leave you alone for a few moments.
Jouseff, this is Laurel Taylor.
How do you do? We must talk Jared, alone.
Jouseff, it was Laurel that saved my life.
Aha.
You are all right? Ah, I'll feel better when the bandages come off.
Jared, I am under much political pressure.
I must use your discovery.
I must use it now.
Jouseff, you know the research was destroyed in the fire.
But as soon as you can get me back to my laboratory in Orambaq, I will duplicate it.
The bandages will be off in 24 hours, and I will be able to travel.
We must leave tonight.
I have a charter flight.
The two of us will The three of us.
Not the girl.
Jouseff, I will not go anywhere without her.
Her knowledge in genetics and cellular structure is essential.
I won't agree to him being discharged until the bandages are off.
We are not seeking your permission.
We have important business to attend to, and we will leave tonight.
He could get an infection.
Laurel, if I need medical help, I will seek it.
Can't it wait a few days? No.
No, it can't wait.
We'll travel tonight.
The bandages.
Well, the bandages will come off in Orambaq tomorrow.
And you will be there to help me, Laurel.
Isn't that correct, Jouseff? Yes.
She will be there to help.
[ car horn honks .]
We are not going to my house? Everything you need has been moved into the compound.
You will stay with me.
Your work is here.
It is vital that we make up for lost time and bring this project to quick completion.
[ .]
Anything from Nicholas yet? Not a thing.
He won't be able to use his eyeglasses until they remove the bandages.
[ sighs .]
[ grunts .]
What is this? [ sighs .]
Who are you? Who are you? You are not Jared! He is not Jared! He is not Jared! Who are you?! Who are you?! Speak! What do you mean, "Who are you?" You know who I am! I'm Jared! Jared, your face.
Jim.
Good work, Nicholas.
I'll tell him.
It's not so bad.
I could get used to it.
It is not Jared's face.
Jouseff, I had no face at all.
The doctors had to completely rebuild it.
I know that's not Jared's face, but those are his eyes.
Do you think I wouldn't know? The compound is heavily guarded.
My security is impregnable.
Without my approval, no one, no one can get in or out.
You will rest today and commence work tomorrow.
Shall we go for a walk? Why not? Max, Jim.
He's transmitting now.
Ask him to turn slowly We can freeze-frame this later and study it.
All right, Nicholas, once around the block.
[ yawns .]
I'm sorry.
I'm-I'm so tired, I just can't keep my eyes open.
Oh, well, I'll come with you.
Jouseff, I apologize.
But I thank you, and I bid you good night.
Don't touch it.
Well, that coffee cup should provide K.
With a perfect set of fingerprints Jared's.
Now, what do you make of that? That could be the laboratory.
Controlled environment by the looks of that heating equipment there.
And water pipes.
Maybe it's a sprinkler system.
Right there.
And doesn't that look like a fuel storage tank? - Yeah.
- I think you'll want to have a closer look at that in the morning, Max.
I know how we're getting in there.
Were you looking for me? [ dart fires .]
[ grunts .]
[ whistles .]
I don't think I'm going to enjoy this.
Yeah, I know, I know.
It goes completely against your grain.
[ speaks native language .]
Hold that truck! There is a problem? Let him through.
[ grunts .]
That was close.
Yeah, tell me about it.
I'll see what I can do about that laboratory and get back to you.
[ truck backfiring .]
Hey, get this out.
Out! This truck is as sick as my uncle who owns it.
[ groans .]
Death is but days away, I'm afraid.
I will need some help, my friend, to push it clear.
You, here! You push, I'll drive.
You push, I'll drive.
All together! Heave! [ men grunting .]
[ engine starts .]
GRANT: Many thanks, my friends.
You've been more help than you know.
Trouble.
Hmm.
ID's, security background on everyone in K.
's compound.
PHELPS: Good work.
Do you have nothing to say to each other? Oh, of course.
It's been a long time, Mukhta! Who is this man? This is Jared, returned to us.
He has had plastic surgery.
Ah, you should try it sometime.
Ah, Ismahan.
Ah.
You're looking so well.
It's good to have you back, Jared.
Laurel Taylor, geneticist and my right hand.
- How do you do? - [ sensor beeping .]
[ beeping continues .]
Is there something wrong, Jared? You've seen this a hundred times.
Last time I saw it, I was much closer to it.
Not a pleasant memory.
Jared is even more handsome.
Do you not agree? Yes, I think so.
What are you to him? Are you his lover? That's my business.
it was my business.
Possibly it will be again.
I'd like to see the rest of the growing wheat now.
Of course.
Mukhta.
Laurel? Oh, I'II I think I'll stay and see how the seeds are responding.
[ grunts .]
[ door opens .]
[ door closes .]
Jim, I'm alone in the laboratory.
NICHOLAS: Well, you've developed a fine product, Mukhta.
As is his duty.
Jim, there's a culture dish filled with black seeds in the radiation room.
Shannon, they have to be destroyed.
Can you get in and make the substitution? Can do.
I've got the phony seeds.
GRANT: Shannon, listen.
There's only 130 seconds between bursts of radiation.
I know, Grant.
I can do it.
Be careful.
NICHOLAS: The virus is fully developed.
Think of it, Jouseff.
Millions of seeds, each one of them a messenger of death.
Death and famine.
This is truly a weapon.
A weapon to surpass any bomb.
Shannon! Ismahan, she's coming back.
[ beeping .]
[ banging on door .]
Jim? Jim, do you read me? NICHOLAS: When this crop is harvested, the kernels which have been impregnated with the virus will be ready for irradiation.
What is it? You are sick? Oh, no, it It's a migraine.
Ever since the plastic surgery.
Excuse me.
Can I get you something? Anything that will kill the pain.
[ .]
Ah, thank you.
Thank you.
Mukhta! Fire extinguisher! Jared! Where is Jared?! Jouseff! - Jared! - Jouseff! I'm all right.
I'm all right.
Are you all right? I'm fine.
[ sighs .]
Thank heaven for that.
She's exchanged our black seeds for the infected ones.
All right, so far, so good.
Now she and Nicholas have to destroy Jared's research.
While Max sets up the final blow.
Grant.
I've got an idea.
The notes, and all of Jared's work no longer exist.
So much for his research.
You must understand, there have been unavoidable delays.
HAKIM: You have enjoyed certain privileges and honors since you promised us this weapon, a weapon you said was more powerful than any nuclear device.
Now you bring me plants, seeds.
Excellency, I do not make promises I cannot keep.
It has been over four years.
Perhaps the comforts you have enjoyed over this time have dulled your sense of purpose.
I assure you not, General.
And I doubly assure you, our patience is limited, and we have no sympathy for failure.
Believe me, General, in a matter of weeks, America will be on its knees, begging for mercy.
Be sure it is America, Jouseff.
Not you.
You said you had refined the virus.
Accelerated it.
You said it was almost ready.
NICHOLAS: Almost.
I said almost.
We lost so much in America.
Surely you understand that.
Cultures, seedlings, viral organisms.
Your interference is not helping.
I am not the only one growing impatient.
The General is also waiting for the weapon - you promised us.
- A week.
No.
Not a week.
Tomorrow.
You will be ready tomorrow.
Jouseff, do not threaten me.
Without me, you have nothing.
True! I do need you, Jared.
But I do not need her.
Do you understand me? Tomorrow! By midday! [ door opens and shuts .]
[ valve squeaks .]
[ liquid splashing .]
[ beeps .]
What are you telling me? I'm telling you that your friend Jared and his American paramour have wiped the tapes.
The whole of the research has been obliterated.
You have no copy? That, too is gone.
I knew something was wrong from the moment I laid eyes on that woman.
The seeds At least we still have those.
A mere handful.
But enough to carry out our plan.
Get them for me.
But Jouseff, they may not be ready.
Get them.
Keeping the records was your duty, Ismahan.
You failed! Jouseff! [ pounding on door .]
[ gasping and sobbing .]
Come with me! Have you forgotten how to knock, Jouseff? [ laughs .]
I have forgotten many things, Jared.
But I haven't forgotten how to deal with my enemies.
I thought we were friends.
We were, Jared until you betrayed me.
I have checked your computer.
What are you talking about? He's done everything you asked.
He has used my money, my support, my facilities to develop his virus.
For your benefit, Jouseff, and for our country.
And then he has sold his discovery to the highest bidder.
To our enemies.
Guards! You are under arrest.
You will be given a fair trial and then you will be executed for treason.
[ nearby conversation .]
[ grunts, groans .]
[ grunts, groans .]
[ screaming .]
[ panting .]
Grant? I've got a problem.
Max, are you all right? MAX: Yeah.
But the timing device has seen better days.
Look I've connected the sprinkler system to the gasoline tanks, but without the timing device - I can't set it off.
- Can you find a bucket? A bucket?! Well, not around here.
Maybe there's one in the laboratory.
[ door opens .]
[ door closes .]
My friend? My eyeglasses, please.
I can hardly see without them.
A last request.
[ sighs .]
Thank you.
Jim.
Nicholas has been arrested.
Everything's going according to plan.
And no sign of Shannon.
While I will face the wrath of the General, it is you who will face the executioner unless you agree to testify as state witness against Jared.
I can't do it.
Then you will both be found guilty! I told you, I didn't know what he was up to.
I have no idea why he did it.
Because he is a traitor, and you assisted him.
[ whispers .]
: No.
No? You will speak against him, or die.
The choice is yours.
[ sighs .]
[ .]
Grant, I'm all set.
Good.
Now just make sure there's no more than a trickle of gasoline.
We don't want that bucket to fill too early.
MAX: Gotcha.
[ guards speak native language .]
HAKIM: The People's Court is now in session.
We will hear charges.
I bring a charge against this man, Jared, of treason against the people and the state.
This is the man you assured us would provide Orambaq with a new and deadly weapon.
It is, your Excellency, and he has betrayed the trust I placed in him.
I am not interested in trust, Jouseff K.
Beware how you proceed or you'll find yourself before this same Tribunal.
PHELPS: Please let me through.
[ men shouting gruffly .]
Please, let me through, please, gentlemen.
I must enter the court.
What is happening there? Who is this man? I beg your pardon, Excellency.
I apologize for entering your court in this manner.
My name is Wilson, and I'm an attorney for Amnesty International.
I'm here to act as counsel for, uh, Miss Laurel Taylor? Laurel Taylor is only a witness here.
She does not stand accused.
This is the man on trial.
Sir, do you require representation? Yes, sir.
Your Excellency Let them talk.
Thank you.
[ groans .]
I call the man known as Jouseff K.
[ surprised murmurs .]
I am prosecuting this man.
And I am calling you as a witness.
You will take the stand.
Now you accuse my client of destroying the weapon for financial gain.
He has obviously sold out to the Americans.
Everyone has his price.
Oh, yes, yes.
Everyone has his price.
Even you? No! I am not on trial here.
You know what Jared is charged with? Yes.
Did you assist him in any way? I assisted him in his research, but I didn't help him destroy it.
Then you acknowledge his guilt? I'm sorry.
I don't want to die.
All right! All right, I confess.
I did destroy my research.
But I am proud of what I did! Jared, be careful.
He confesses his guilt! Yes, I'm guilty! The seeds I produced would have made my country strong, but I was tempted to sell out by that man, Jouseff K! It was himself, Jouseff K.
, that convinced me no, ordered me to destroy my research so that our people could never have it.
What are you saying? Isn't it true you masterminded the whole scheme? He is lying! The whole plan was mine, but not to destroy the seeds, to destroy our enemies.
And I was almost ready! The seeds have been ready for weeks, but he sold out to the Americans.
PHELPS: And, isn't it true the final step in your plan was to destroy the research facility? These are lies! Lies! All lies! I am loyal to Orambaq! I dealt with nobody! I am loyal to Orambaq! This is a conspiracy! And you are the conspirator! No! No! The compound! The laboratory! Hold him! No! Hold them all! Take them to their cells! [ gallery clamoring .]
He gave no mercy, and he'll get none from the executioner's sword.
[ theme music playing .]
